Internationally renowned for its contributions to modern music, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) has been an inspirational leader within the cultural community for more than fifty years. The AACM will be honored with the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award at CMA’s 2019 National Conference, Building Equitable Communities on Sunday January 20, 2019.

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, saxophonist, flutist, and longtime AACM member Henry Threadgill will appear in conversation with Larry Blumenfeld, jazz and culture reporter for The Wall Street Journal. AACM members Amina Claudine Myers (solo piano) and The AACM Trio (Adegoke Steve Colson, piano; Reggie Nicholson, drums; and Ernest Dawkins, alto saxophone) will perform. The Award will be presented to Ernest Dawkins from the Chicago Chapter and Richarda Abrams from the New York City Chapter.

The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a non-profit tax-exempt arts organization, is one of the oldest musicians associations in the United States. Since its founding in Chicago, Illinois in 1965 by Dr. Muhal Richard Abrams, Jodie Christian, Kelan Phil Cohran, and Steve McCall, the organization’s members have developed a body of work that encompasses the spectrum of traditional and contemporary music.

The AACM New York City Chapter, Inc. a non-profit tax-exempt entity was established in 1983. The AACM New York City Chapter, Inc. functions as an ensemble of composers and performers whose mission is to present concerts that feature world premieres, which are composed by AACM members.
