JOE BUSHKIN: "The Rat Race" (1960) – YouTube

Music rehearsal scene from "The Rat Race" movie, screenplay by Garson Kanin, directed by Richard Mulligan. Tony Curtis plays a young sax player who comes to New York and falls in love with Debbie Reynolds. In this scene, pianist Joe Bushkin recreates his role of Frankie Jay from the original Broadway play in 1953. Saxophonist Sam Butera (of Louis Prima fame) appears in the role originated by Georgie Auld on Broadway. Although Tony Curtis took lessons to learn saxophone fingering, the baritone sax parts were played by Gerry Mulligan, while the alto sax parts are believed to have been played by Phil Woods. Songs performed are "That Old Black Magic" and "Lullaby of Birdland" (which is incorrectly referred to as by Curtis' character as "Lullaby In Birdland")

A New Yorker magazine pick for the week:
Joe Bushkin was a Zelig-like figure of classic jazz and pop who flitted amid the glimmer of such giants as Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, and Frank Sinatra, contributing idiomatic piano work and, to Sinatra’s delight, the standard tune “Oh! Look at Me Now.”

Led by Bushkin's trumpeter son-in-law Bob Merrill,
starring

Harry Allen ~ Ted Rosenthal ~ Eric Comstock ~ Steve Johns

My fave line:
"…[after] taking a short-lived job with Benny Goodman. "We didn't see eye to eye," Bushkin said."
