Samuel Martinelli, an up-and-coming drummer from Brazil who is based in New York and has been generating a stir in both the jazz and Brazilian music worlds, makes his recording debut as a leader on Crossing Paths. While his drumming is supportive and he plays stimulating ideas behind his sidemen, Martinelli’s six new compositions make it obvious that he is a talented songwriter too.

For this colorful project, Martinelli features a quartet that includes the great veteran trumpeter and flugelhornist Claudio Roditi (who, in addition to his own projects, has worked with such giants as Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D’Rivera and McCoy Tyner), pianist Tomoko Ohno (her credits include Slide Hampton, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, James Moody and Diva) and bassist Marcus McLaurine who worked with the Count Basie Orchestra and was Clark Terry’s bassist for nearly a quarter-century. Each of these musicians is equally adept at performing jazz and Brazilian music. While there is always a strong Brazilian tinge to the music on Crossing Paths, the performances are modern straight ahead jazz. Born and raised in Brazil, Samuel Martinelli earned a degree in Music Therapy, developing programs that uplift the lives of the elderly with music. He moved to New York City in 2014, studying for his Masters in Jazz Studies at the City University of New York – Queens College. Among his mentors was drummer Dennis Mackrel. Martinelli has since worked with many top artists including Claudio Roditi, Hendrik Meurkens, Nilson Matta, Maurice Peress, and Tres Urbanos, a Brazilian trio with bassist Itaiguara Brandao and guitarist Welsey Amorim. As an educator he has created Brazilian Clef, a Brazilian Music Workshop project which teaches students and the public about Brazilian music.

Crossing Paths is an excellent introduction to the playing and writing talents of drummer/songwriter Samuel Martinelli’s and makes for an enjoyable listening experience.
