Jazz Woman to the rescue, at Bickford Theatre

Periodically, musician and activist Antoinette Montague will throw on a cape and assume the persona of costumed super-hero: Jazz Woman.

“I was doing a concert with an all-woman band,” recalled Montague.  “I grabbed a cape and started calling myself that.”  She has used the sobriquet in the title of her 2015 album, “Jazz Woman to the Rescue.”

Newark-born Montague is a woman on a mission – several, actually.  She does not shy away from political and social causes, and she embraces the role of activist.  “I don’t see myself as having to take a stand,” she said.  “It just comes out.”

At the same time, she embraces the diverse spectrum of music that includes swing, jazz, and R&B.  “When I perform, I’m always fraught,” Montague said.  “What am I going to give the audience that is great and that is authentic?”

All those facets will be on display when the Antoinette Montague Experience, as she calls her ensemble, performs at the Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum on Thursday, July 26.

The concert is part of the theater’s Summer JazzFest.  As is the case with all shows in the series, food trucks will be selling wares two hours before the performance.

Montague said that her Bickford concert will draw from the sounds of traditional New Orleans.  “We’ll do some second-line and party music, with some blues,” she said.   Besides singing, she will also play kazoo on numbers from the 1920s and 1930s."
