BERNARD PURDIE the world’s most recorded drummer, was born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the eleventh of fifteen children. Purdie moved to New York in 1960 after finishing high school and played with (among others), Lonnie Youngblood before landing his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970 – the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has been a regular guest in the studios of the stars of Jazz, Soul, and Rock, working together with Paul Butterfield as well as Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums under his own name.

Liner Notes from Purdie “Soul To Jazz.” 3-96. With Brecker Brothers, ACT Music & Vision GMBH.

DAVID HANEY studied composition for six years with Czech composer, Tomas Svoboda. After several years of working with the Society of Oregon Composers, Haney began applying  his skills as a working jazz artist, often paired up with some of the greatest minds in jazz improvisation, such featured artists as Andrew Cyrille, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Bud Shank, Bernard Purdie, Buell Neidlinger, Julian Priester, Han Bennink, Obo Addy, Wilbert de Joode, Gerry Hemingway, Wolter Weirbos, Perry Robinson, and Johannes Bauer. Haney has recorded 14 albums in ten years for C.I.M.P. Records and Cadence Jazz Records. David has also collaborated on 14 albums on other labels worldwide. He has received grants and commissions for his creative work from the U.S. State Department; Alberta Film Works; and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Haney was awarded a travel grant from the U.S. State Department to present the music of composer Herbie Nichols in concerts throughout Argentina and Chile. Haney’s piano/trombone work Ota Benga of the Batwa was included in the critics pick for best Jazz Album of 2007 (Coda Magazine). “Conspiracy a go go” and “Clandestine” were both selected Top Ten Jazz Albums of 2009 (Cadence Magazine). David’s current release “Solo” received top ten honors in 2014 (Cadence Magazine). The Penguin Guide to Jazzhas a half page entry on several David Haney albums.

ADAM LANE

By combining a disparate set of influences into a unique improvisational voice, Adam Lane has become recognized as one of the most original creative voices in contemporary jazz. His 2006 recording New Magical Kingdom, was recently featured in the Penguin Jazz Guide 1001 Best Records Ever Made, and his most recent recording, Ashcan Ranting received a myriad of critical praise including four stars in Downbeat.

“Lane’s music is genuine, accessible, fun. The music is deeply in touch with the essential pleasures of earwig-worthy tunes, fat bluesy grooves, and sheer tonal beauty.” (Downbeat Jan 2011)

“Haney tells these tales with the dramatic flair of a Garrison Keillor..” –  Cadence Magazine

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.” Cadence Magazine

I’m very happy to have worked with Dave Haney. That’s number one. Dave did a thing for me. He actually brought me back to creativity. Just doing things wild – I mean all of the unexpected stuff that you can possibly think of. And it got me thinking: wow, I haven’t done this in 30-35 years!” – Interview with Bernard Purdie, Oregon Music News

“Mr. Haney is a pianist drawn to experimental settings, and he creates a promising one here.”  The New York Times

FOR YOUR GRAMMY® CONSIDERATION
Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album
Song of the Year
“The Man I Love Is Gone”
by Laura Ainsworth and George Gagliardi

Laura Ainsworth’s New Vintage Brings “Traditional Pop Vocals” into the 21st Century!

Thank you, Laura, for making the Great American Songbook exciting and fun again!” – David Gasten, producer, This Is Vintage Now

For Your consideration in “Traditional Pop Vocal Album” and “The Man I Love Is Gone” for “Best Song”

From STUDIO 67 in Hollywood

Laura Ainsworth interviewed on “Buddies Lounge,” the national radio show/podcast dedicated to lounge jazz, bachelor pad and exotica (the host normally doesn’t feature contemporary artists,
but he broke format to include Laura)  Listen Here

Laura Ainsworth Swings by the Penthouse to Tell All About
New Vintage

On the internationally-syndicated radio show/podcast “Cocktail Nation,” interviewed by the king of all things swank, host Koop Kooper: Listen Here

ABOUT THE ALBUM

New Vintage is Dallas-based retro jazz vocalist Laura Ainsworth’s third release on Eclectus Records (fourth if you count her audiophile vinyl best-of LP, “Top Shelf.”)  Her debut, Keep It To Yourself, garnered worldwide radio play and critical raves (“The whole album is among the year’s most consistently engaging jazz releases, performed with class and heartfelt passion.” – AllAboutJazz.com).  Her follow-up, Necessary Evil, upped the ante with a big band horn section and film noir theme (“Laura Ainsworth has not only met the incredible standard set by her debut recording, but surpassed it…” – Eric Harabadian, JazzInside.com).

Now, her third release New Vintage is being hailed as her breakthrough, an album that places her at the forefront of the rising lounge/exotica/bachelor pad genre.  One word that critics have used repeatedly in describing it is “perfect” – from her entrancing, pitch-perfect voice to the creative arrangements, the brilliant musical accompaniment and the sterling audio quality, courtesy of Crystal Clear Sound.  Even the packaging – with its striking images of Laura’s trademark red hair, gorgeous face and figure, elegant gowns and elbow-length gloves – is reminiscent of the classic LP covers of the sultry chanteuses of the 1950s.

With New Vintage, Laura Ainsworth perfects the things her fans have grown to love: brilliant reinventions of well-worn standards such as “Nevertheless” and “Long Ago and Far Away” (here spun into a medley with “You Stepped Out of a Dream”)…Stunning new versions of forgotten gems not recorded in over half a century, such as the long-lost Johnny Mercer ballad, “It’s A Nuisance Having You Around” and “All About You,” once described by Irving Berlin as a “perfect love song”…And creative new mixes of the old and new, such as turning a dated blues/rock song from the swingin’ ’70s into “I Once Knew A Fella,” both a rollicking celebration of female sexual empowerment and a musical salute to the raunchy sax stylings of Vegas legend Sam Butera, a former bandmate of Laura’s dad.  Top it all off with an outstanding original song – “The Man I Love Is Gone” by Laura and George Gagliardi – that sounds like the best midcentury standard that you’ve never heard before.  It’s no wonder both critics and radio hosts are hailing Laura Ainsworth for bringing the Great American Songbook into the 21st century!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Retro jazz vocalist Laura Ainsworth grew up steeped in the Great American Songbook and surrounded by some of the greatest jazz musicians of the 20th century, thanks to her late dad, renowned big band sax/clarinet prodigy, Billy Ainsworth.  Today, she combines those elegant midcentury lounge jazz sounds with her own witty, sexy, modern twists to create an irresistible cocktail that critics have dubbed New Vintage. That’s the name of her terrific third album, which has scored Laura rave reviews, a place on JazzWeek’s Most-Added radio chart, and feature articles in such national publications as Downbeat and Cabaret Scenes.

Based in Dallas, Laura works with longtime pianist/producer Brian Piper, recently honored as “Dallas Jazz Musician of the Year,” and some of the top musicians in North Texas to create both her live shows (she has performed from Manhattan to India to Dubai) and her three critically-acclaimed albums: Keep It To Yourself, Necessary Evil, and now her breakthrough, New Vintage. Her silky, three-octave voice has been compared to such icons as Rosemary Clooney, Julie London and Dinah Shore, and described by reviewers as “rich and distinctive,” “impossibly old-fashioned,” “a mirror reflection into the past,” “the very portrait of West Coast cool,” and “as sweet as a meadowlark crossed with a hummingbird.”

Laura takes inspiration from such idols as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, not by slavishly imitating their styles, but by doing what they did: finding the best songs – whether new, standards, or long-forgotten gems – and putting her own fresh, unique spin on them.  Her music, like her life, is devoted to preservation, whether it’s restoring her midcentury modern childhood home, filling it with rescued and disabled exotic birds, or breathing exciting new life into the music of the ’20s-’50s to reintroduce it to a whole new generation!
THE CRITICS RAVE ABOUT NEW VINTAGE AND LAURA AINSWORTH
“Sublime… A perfect album!” – Alan Mercer, celebrity photographer and entertainment blogger, AMprofile.blogspot.com

“Laura Ainsworth is breathing new life into the previously staid ‘jazz standards’ album format… With New Vintage, Laura creates a rich, intoxicating atmosphere that transports the mind to another place and time. Laura swings and seduces her way into the heart like only the original jazz singers could previously do. “They don’t make ’em like they used to” no longer applies, as Laura has rediscovered a large portion of the formula, and uses it liberally on the New Vintage album.  Thank you, Laura, for making the Great American Songbook exciting and fun again!” – David Gasten, Producer, “This is Vintage Now”

“Laura Ainsworth’s third album sparkles like champagne… Her voice, a satiny ribbon that seems to flow as an uninterrupted river of downbeats, is rich and distinctive, but it’s her sense of humor that catches you note after note… New Vintage is an album of reinvention, both feet planted in the present, but forever looking back.” – Arnold Wayne Jones, Dallas Voice

“With another lounge revival swinging our way, she’s right at the forefront

of the revival, unearthing worthy songs that haven’t been recorded in the last 50 years, which culls her from the rest of the diva pack that think it all begins and ends with Cole Porter…Streaming like a comet out of Texas, this gal is all gal and proud of it to the tips of her opera length gloves.  A must for jazzbo vocal fans.”  – Chris Spector, Editor & Publisher, MidwestRecord.com

“You can keep those pop divas, the only one for me is Laura Ainsworth!…Ainsworth has beauty, brains, sophistication and comic timing that make her a total performance package… A wonderful modern interpreter of the Great American Songbook as well as thoroughly modern styles.”
– Eric Harabadian, Jazz Inside

“…Fun from start to finish, sung with just the right approach by Ainsworth, with support by a hip band led by pianist and arranger Brian Piper.  It is a smile-inducing winner!”  – Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz

“Listening to Ainsworth’s sultry, old-fashioned voice, audiences might not know that the 21st century had arrived…Ainsworth has carved a niche for herself as a singer of retro jazz. Her voice comes courtesy of a tradition forged by Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore and Julie London…The instrumentation is almost perfect. The sound is lush, perfectly timed, and neither overwhelms nor hides behind Ainsworth’s voice. Overall, a great album for jazz fans looking to hear a contemporary artist put an earnest spin on classics.”
– Dodie Miller-Gould, lemonwire.com

Beautiful voice, expressive and sensitive, accompanied by a group with serious professionalism…An excellent album!” – Serge Warin, Radio Grand Brive, Objat, France

“She is able to take you back to those late-night joints with the smoky blue rooms…If you’re a dedicated fan of jazz retro vocal work, you’ll love this one…I give it a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED…”
– Dick Metcalf, Contemporary Fusion Reviews

“…Incites listeners to grab their favorite cocktail and dim the lights while engulfed in the smooth jazz ether of her music… New Vintage embraces the vintage sounds of classic jazz and gives the genre a modern lift.” – Susan Frances, Top Amazon.com reviewer

“Laura Ainsworth weaves past and present with stunning power… Her voice is like (a) mirror reflection into the past, conjuring black-and-white images of well-groomed gentlemen in trench coats and fedoras, smoke-enveloped bars, and glamorous women whose beauty is nearly as bright as their jewelry…It might not be long before Dallas is not just known for its oil, Cowboys, and J.R. Ewing but a funny lady with a jewel of a voice…” – Robert Sutton, JazzCorner.com

In Memoriam: Andy McGhee

In Memoriam: Andy McGhee

Dear members of the Berklee community,
Teaching keeps me up to date and around good players. If you’re going to be a teacher and talk about something all day, you gotta be able to do it.
ndy McGheeThose are the words of former longtime Berklee faculty member Andy McGhee, who passed away on October 12 in Atlanta. With Andy’s passing, Berklee lost one of the seminal figures in its development. He would have been 90 years old on November 3.
Starting in 1966, Andy taught at Berklee for 47 years. After 31 years as a full-time faculty member, he first “retired” in 1997, but like many faculty members, continued to teach as a professor emeritus and part-time faculty member for another 16 years, finally deciding to completely retire in 2013. Andy taught private lessons and ensembles during his long tenure at Berklee. His many students included noted saxophonists such as Woodwind Department Chair Bill Pierce, as well as Javon Jackson, Donald Harrison, Walter Beasley, Antonio Hart, Richie Cole, Greg Osby, Jaleel Shaw, and Ralph Moore.
Bill Pierce remembers Andy as a “man of substance and integrity. In his own way, he tried to impart those virtues to those of us who had the privilege to be his students.”
ndy McGheeIn 1945 at age 17, Andy came to Boston from North Carolina to study at New England Conservatory of Music. This temporarily spared him from serving in the Armed Forces, but a year after his graduation in 1949, he was drafted. He married his wife, Constance, in 1950, and served in the Army in Korea and at Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he played in an Army band and gave lessons to other musicians. Andy returned to Boston in 1952 to play with a variety of groups, including trumpeter Roy Eldridge and local Boston musician Fat Man Robinson. From 1957–1963, Andy worked in Lionel Hampton’s band, touring the United States, Europe, and the Far East. His composition, “McGhee,” can be found on the recording, The Many Sides of Hamp.
Following the stint with Hampton, Andy worked with Woody Herman from 1963 to 1966. In Jim Sullivan’s profile of McGhee for Berklee Today’s spring 2006 issue, Andy recounted that “Woody Herman heard him play eight bars and decided to bring him into his band. He did not consider race an issue, which unfortunately it often was back then. Herman, in fact, told [Andy] (the only African-American in his band at the time) that if he encountered any racial issues when they were on the road, he should bring them to his attention. There were only two times it happened, and Herman dealt promptly with the issues on both occasions.”
In the interview for that same article, Andy produced a telegram from 1966 asking him to call a number in New York about his availability for the Count Basie Orchestra. When the offer for the prestigious road gig with Basie came in, Andy had already started teaching at Berklee and elected to stay put. “Biggest decision of his life? ‘Oh, yeah,’ said [Andy], clad in his trademark sweater on this cold January day. ‘I had a family, two daughters, and a wife. These were terrible times with the busing in Boston. My family lived in West Roxbury, and it was time for me to stay home.'”
ndy McGheeWhen Andy arrived at Berklee in 1966, he was part of a small and prestigious group of horn players-turned-teachers, sometimes teaching 35 hours a week. Jim Sullivan wrote in the Berklee Today article that “[Andy] praised Berklee founder Larry Berk as ‘someone who cared for you as a musician and as a human being.’ He recalls Berk asking him if he rented his house and advising him to buy rather than throw money out the window. ‘Larry was a good businessperson who had a passion for music. He was interested in ways I could make some money.’ Berk also encouraged [Andy] to write educational books.'” So, that’s what he did. While maintaining his teaching schedule, Andy wrote the instruction books, Improvisation for Saxophone: The Scale/Mode Approach, Improvisation for Flute: The Scale/Mode Approach, and Modal Studies for Saxophone. And though music remained the main interest for Andy, he was widely known to thoroughly enjoy playing golf.
The highlight of Andy’s non-teaching career may well be the Golden Men of Jazz tour he did with Hampton, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Clark Terry, Benny Bailey, Al Grey, and Benny Golson in the early 1990s. The Golden Men of Jazz played concerts throughout Europe and on returning to the United States played for President George H. W. Bush in Washington, D.C. Andy recalled in the Berklee Today article, “it was mellow, relaxed, no headaches. We flew first class, and we made some money.”
In May 2006, Andy was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee and in commemoration of Andy’s’s long and dedicated service to the college and the impact he has had on his students through the years, the Andy McGhee Endowed Scholarship was established. Anyone interested in making a memorial gift to the fund can give online, or contact Jo Craig, gift entry and stewardship coordinator, at 617-747-2236 or jcraig1@berklee.edu.
I invite you to share your stories and memories about Andy on our In Memoriam blog.
Sincerely,
Jay Kennedy

“By any measure, Zeitlin’s output over the past 50 years

A FEW REVIEWS OF DENNY ZEITLIN’S SOLO PIANO PERFORMANCES

“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.”
        Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.”
        George Goodman, New York Times

“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.”
        Don Freeman, San Diego Union

“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.”
       Munchner Merkur (Munich)

“With a dozen Chicago vocalists and a raft of compositions — many written with those particular vocalists in mind — Jeannie Tanner’s double-disc constitutes a love letter to the city’s jazz singers. And hearing their performances, the feeling is clearly mutual.”

– NEIL TESSER/The Jazz Network/Grammy Award Winning Journalist

“Chicago does not lack for engaging jazz trumpeters, vocalists, pianists, bandleaders, songwriters and arrangers — but how many can do it all? Jeannie Tanner happens to be one… If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to hear her pick up a horn, or sing a ballad or unveil an original song, you know that she practically exudes music.”
-Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Words & Music is a collection of Great American Songbook-inspired tunes written by trumpet virtuoso Jeannie TannerTanner takes audiences back to a time when blues singers ruled the nightlife of cabarets and jazz clubs far and wide… “Words & Music” offers a bounty of melodic jazz blends, from bossa nova to cabaret and swing. Each track is a singalong tune, making the recording appealing to a wide audience and crossing over many sectors of jazz.”

The game cheers heard on “Viva Belgrano” echo those we encounter when the best musicians touch us with their passion, imagination and soul.
Bob Blumenthal

The music of GOL makes a strong argument also that Feldman is a terrific talent and deserves to be known alongside other great altos like Steve Coleman, Miguel Zenon, he is definitely in that class.
jAZZ vIEWS

Feldman presents Gol, an eclectic blend of music covering the sounds of South America, Beck and The Beatles, all re-invented and revolving around his signature sound on alto and soprano saxophones. and aptly represents the cresting wave of contemporary saxophonists coming out of Latin America.
ALL ABOUT JAZZ.

Especially on Gol… most of all you are seduced – sometimes to ecstasy and at other times virtually to tears – by the note itself, pregnant with intense emotion.

Multi-Grammy nominated
BOBBY SANABRIA MULTIVERSE BIG BAND
WEST SIDE STORY REVISITED
A 60th Anniversary Tribute

A NEW Latin jazz treatment of this timeless masterwork!!!
Live recording for new CD!

DIZZY’S CLUB COCA-COLA
November 17, 18, 19
Tickets & Info

On November 17,18,19, history will be made as the mutli-Grammy nominated BOBBY SANABRIA MULTIVERSE BIG BAND pays tribute to the Broadway show that redefined the American musical, West Side Story, reimagined with an all new instrumental Latin jazz score.

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but re-set to the turbulent gang culture of 1950s New York City, West Side Story broke every rule in the book.

“They said there’s nothing in it anybody can sing. It’s too depressing, it’s too advanced, it’s too crazy, there are too many tritones, there are too many words in the lyrics—nobody can remember them. It’s too rangy.” –Leonard Bernstein

But after initial setbacks, like the producer pulling out just before the start of rehearsals, the show that almost never came to the stage premiered on September 26, 1957 at New York’s Winter Garden Theater to tumultuous applause and critical acclaim. Its amazing combination of progressive jazz oriented music, lyricism, emotional impact, and amazing choreography, showcasing dance movement that had never been seen before on the Broadway stage, gave birth to the triple threat in musical theatre—performers who could sing, dance and act.

Now virtuoso drummer, percussionist composer, arranger, bandleader, Bobby Sanabria brings his critically acclaimed 21 piece Multiverse Big band to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola November 17, 18. 19 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this masterwork with an all new Latin jazz treatment of Maestro Bernstein’s original score. This exciting reimagining showcases the internal kinetic energy of the music with exciting arrangements featuring various rhythms from Latin America.

Bobby Sanabria states, “Maestro Bernstein’s genius of utilizing the tritone (the opening whistle), the interval of modern jazz harmony, set the stage for something that had never been heard on the Broadway stage. Several Latin music genres were also used in the show. But in this new updated version, the full palette of jazz and Latin American styles will be featured—from Venezuelan joropo, Puerto Rican bomba and plena, Dominican merengue, Brazilian samba and samba cansao, Cuban mambo, cha-cha-cha, bolero, son montuno, West African rooted bembé, and American funk and swing—providing the musicians an explosive platform as jazz soloists.”

In addition the closing evening of November 19 will be live streamed and recorded for Bobby’s upcoming CD release on the Jazzheads label.

The program will feature…

ABOUT BOBBY SANABRIA
Seven-time Grammy nominee as a leader, drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, educator, documentary film producer, multicultural warrior, and activist, Bobby Sanabria is a native Nuyorican born and raised in New York’s South Bronx. His unique perspective comes from having performed and/or recorded with every major figure in the development of what today is known as Latin jazz. From the genre’s acknowledged creator, maestro Mario Bauzá, for whom Bobby recorded three Grammy-nominated CDs and worked as the drummer in his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra for ten years, to Mongo Santamaria, with whom he started his career, to Tito Puente, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Larry Harlow, Candido, Dizzy Gillespie, Marco Rizo, and many more. Mr. Sanabria’s versatility and scope of musical influence as both a drummer and percussionist has extended to other forms of music. He has worked with such genre-bending artists as composers David Amram, Henry Threadgill, and poet Sekou Sundiata, as well as being named as the newest member of Max Roach’s legendary percussion ensemble, M’Boom.

A noted educator and clinician, Bobby Sanabria is on the faculty of Manhattan School of Music and of the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program at the New School and directs both schools’ Afro-Cuban jazz orchestras. In 2000 Maestro Sanabria’s groundbreaking Grammy-nominated CD Live & In Clave!!! was hailed by the jazz press worldwide for its futuristic take on the big band Latin jazz tradition. Grammy nominations followed for his Big Band Urban Folktales (2008) and, with the MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Kenya Revisited Live!!! (2009), a tribute and re-working of the Machito Afro-Cubans’ legendary Kenya album, and Tito Puente: Masterworks Live!!! (2011). He has worked as a producer, advisor, and on-air personality on the award-winning documentaries The Palladium Where Mambo Was King (Bravo, 2003), From Mambo to Hip Hop (PBS, 2007), Latin Music U.S.A. (PBS, 2009), and I Like It Like That: The Story of Latin Boogaloo (2015). He is the Co-Artistic Director/Curator of the Bronx Music Heritage Center and the Artistic Director/Artist in Residence of the Roberto Ocasio Memorial Latin Jazz Camp for High School Students in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 2006 Bobby was honored by his hometown, Da’ Bronx, by being inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame and having a streetnamed after him on the Grand Concourse. The readers of DRUM! magazine named him Percussionist of the Year in 2006 and the Jazz Journalists Association honored him as Percussionist of the Year in 2011 and 2013. In 2012, his CD Multiverse, on the Jazzheads label, again featuring his 19-piece big band, received two Grammy nominations. In 2013 Mr. Sanabria was honored by Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and the Dream Big Foundation for his community activism, leadership, and work in the South Bronx with children. His most recent recording, Que Viva Harlem! (2015), featuring the MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, has been critically acclaimed by the jazz cognoscenti, receiving 4 1/2  stars from Downbeat magazine. He recently composed the music for Some Girls, a film by noted indie documentary filmmakers Henry Chalfant and Raquel Cepeda. Along with noted folklorist/cultural anthropologist Elena Martinez, Mr. Sanabria is currently the Co-Artistic Director of the Bronx Music Heritage Center. He is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1979. He proudly endorses TAMA Drums, Latin Percussion Inc., Vic Firth Sticks, Sabian Cymbals, and Remo Drumheads.

      – David Barron, KSDS 88.3 FM

“With a powerful voice and soul in spades, Debora Galan is a true talent.”
       – Paul Hormick, San Diego Troubadour

With her album, All About Love, composer and vocalist Debora Galán shares original jazz and pop compositions inspired by her Spanish and Cuban ancestry and her attenuating love for melody, rhythm and groove. Aided by producer (Emmy winning and Grammy nominated) Allan Phillips, and a stellar team of musicians, she shares a compendium of smooth and tasteful Latin flavored jazz tunes, with lyrics in English and Spanish. Album single, “Arms of Love,” and corresponding music video, are grabbing attention from fans and receiving airplay in the U.S. and abroad.

Born in Brussels, the bilingual Spanish songstress inherited her love of music from her grandfather and mother who both sang flamenco. Galán moved to the States and began singing professionally in her teens. In the 1980’s, she was living in Washington, D.C., performing with leading bands in Latin jazz and salsa clubs and opening for major Latin stars.

Now at home in San Diego, the stunning vocalist performs widely on the West Coast with occasional forays to Vegas. Having mastered R & B, Gospel, Jazz and Latin styles. Galán brings talent and training to many projects. She has recorded with singer songwriter Steven Ybarra and pianist Greg Manning and collaborated with Greek guitarist Vassilis “Blue” Sotiriou. (Stay tuned for news of an upcoming venture with Christian de Mesones). In her first album as a leader, she allows passion and optimism to infuse her appealing brand of world music.

JAZZ VOCALIST CARMEN LUNDY ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL TOUR DATES TO ACCOMPANY HER CRITICALLY-LAUDED ALBUM, “CODE NOIR”

Cities Include New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami And Chicago

For Your Grammy Voting Consideration
Carmen Lundy Code Noir

Lundy’s ruggedly conversational lyrics and welcome social commentary inhabit territory Abbey Lincoln and Marvin Gaye both might recognize. Her voice swoops down and provides a focal point.  It’s sensuality.  It’s wisdom, it’s curiosity – they all roll into a fetching package.” DownBeat

“Musicians as diversely gifted as Carmen Lundy, who has excelled as a vocalist, composer, lyricist, arranger, guitarist and keyboardist for more than three decades, remain far and few between.” – Jazz Times

Los Angeles, California.  On the heels of her celebrated CD “CODE NOIR” released earlier this year, Jazz vocalist Carmen Lundy has announced additional tour dates to take place this Fall and Winter.  With stops in New York City November 11th  (a live PBS special taping, The Historymakers Honor Franklin Thomas), a four night run at The Jazz Showcase in Chicago November 30th-December 3rd, December 9th at Scullers in Boston and South Jazz in Philadelphia on December 16th and 17th, Lundy will close out 2017 on a high note following rave reviews of the album and her accompanying live performances.  Also slated for February is a date at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on Valentine’s Day 2018 and a featured spot at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival in Baltimore on February 18th.

Never one to limit her creative journeys, Lundy explores the realms of Jazz, Blues, Brazilian Samba and Pop on CODE NOIR with a multitude of messages that reflect not only the complexities of her own mindset, but the disparity of the world at large.  Poignant, heartfelt, angry, joyous, shocked, and saddened are just a few of the emotions conveyed by this wonderfully evocative singer on CODE NOIR via this highly personal musical voyage.

“These songs encompass the musical and artistic influences from the African diaspora and its influence on jazz and other musical genres – the bossa nova, the blues, swing, funk, the exploration into the avant-garde,” says Carmen.  “Yet they also encompass the many emotions that are currently prevalent in this country.  We are going through tough times with a country that is sorely divided and many of these tracks reflect the feelings that we as human beings are going through on an individual level.  CODE NOIR actually refers to the first law ever written by a person in power of a sovereign nation/empire – the King of France Louis XIV – the first law to disallow and make illegal the integration of the African race into white European society.

Lundy either wrote or co-wrote all twelve tracks on the record which features Patrice Rushen on piano, Ben Williams on bass, Jeff Parker on electric guitar, Kendrick Scott on drums and percussion and Elisabeth Oei on background vocals.  In addition to vocals, Lundy also plays keyboards and guitar.

The Artists:

JULIAN LAGE & CHRIS ELDRIDGE

On Mount Royal, their 2017 release on Free Dirt Records, Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge craft songs that sound familiar but are never easily classified. Percolating with tinges of bluegrass and folk, insinuations of jazz and pop, hints of classical and avant garde composition, the album rarely settles into any one particular category; rather, it dances around the territory between genres, never announcing its innovations and prizing soulfulness above chops at every turn. From first note to last, the duo push themselves to find new ways to play their vintage flat-top steel-string acoustic Martin guitars together.

The Grammy-nominated Lage has been highly regarded in jazz and new music circles for his own work as well as for his collaborations with such artists as Nels Cline, Fred Hersch, Gary Burton, and Jim Hall, to name a few. Fellow Grammy-nominee Eldridge, an Oberlin Conservatory grad who studied with bluegrass guitar legend Tony Rice, is equally noted in the progressive bluegrass world for his stints with The Seldom Scene and The Infamous Stringdusters, which led to his joining Chris Thile’s adventurous quintet, Punch Brothers.

When they play together, however, they do not represent the genres or styles with which they have long been identified. “It’s not like I’m the jazz representative and he’s the bluegrass representative. We could care less about that,” says Lage. Instead, they make music simply as friends and individuals who happen to have unique ideas and techniques. “Playing with Jules, it feels like anything is possible,” says Eldridge. “You have no constraints. There’s just so much room to move around… which really opens you up to being more creative.” Adds Lage: “Our rapport is based on the idea that we’re researchers studying this idea of what two acoustic guitars can do together, how you can integrate that into instrumental songwriting and how you can reconcile that with vocal music. A noted authority on Country blues music, Woody has taught at major guitar workshops in the USA and Europe, been a faculty member at the New School in NYC, and founded International Guitar Seminars. Presently, Mann is a visiting artist at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. His latest book, “Just Play” combines history and stories of great artists Woody has known and worked with, including his early mentors Reverend Gary Davis and jazz great Lennie Tristano, jazz guitarist Attila Zoller, Portuguese composer Carlos Paredes, and master guitar builders Jimmy D’Aquisto and John Monteleone. As a producer and filmmaker his most recent project includes the award-winning feature documentary, “Harlem Street Singer”, the story of the legendary guitarist Reverend Gary Davis. Throughout his career, Woody has not forgotten those early lessons in the Rev. Davis’ living room or the jazz traditions that were his wellspring. He has become one of the world’s renowned guitar masters – bringing the past up to the present – with his own contemporary improvisational style.

Tickling the Ivories

Alison Rooney  October 22, 2017
Trained as dentist, schooled in jazz
By Alison Rooney
Bert Rechtschaffer became a dentist in part because he had a lot of cavities as a child. (“My mom was big on baking,” he explains.) He also had an uncle who had a dental lab in his home in Brooklyn, and one day Bert’s mother took him there with an infected baby tooth.
“He looked at my mouth, my mother standing behind him, and he gave her a look as if there was a person dying,” Rechtschaffer, who lives in Garrison, recalls. “He shook his head and came at me with a needle which seemed at least 2 feet long. I wouldn’t open my mouth. ‘We can give you gas,’ my uncle said. My association with gas was the two huge, green oxygen tanks hooked up to another uncle who was dying. I ripped the chain bib off and ran down the street.”
What happened?
“Another dentist had more aplomb with a recalcitrant juvenile.”
Despite that early trauma, the magic touch of the second dentist and a cousin who became one, as well, inspired Rechtschaffer to give up his dream of becoming an airline pilot. That, and his poor eyesight.

Rechtschaffer had another interest that began when he was a child in Brooklyn: the piano. The family had an upright and “from the beginning I wanted to play jazz piano, but got told ‘You have to play classical,’ ” he recalls. “I took lessons from a church organist. She would say, ‘You’ve been playing that jazz music — it’s immoral. It leads young people to go to the puppy dogs.’ There were monthly recitals — it was awful.”
He kept playing, however, and these days is best known as the leader of the Bert Rechtschaffer Trio, which has become a jazz fixture in the Highlands. It next plays on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Chill Wine Bar, 173 Main St., in Beacon, with Mike Dipazo on sax and Stephanie Lovina on bass. The music will start about 8:30 p.m.
Asked what dentistry and jazz piano have in common, Rechtschaffer quickly responds: “Dexterity. They both take a certain amount of dexterity.”
Rechtschaffer, 82, had a dental practice in Croton for more than 30 years. After raising two children and retiring, Rechtschaffer and his wife,  Sheilah, headed off around the world, including stays in St. Lucia, Brazil and Vietnam. He volunteered as a dentist, and she taught painting. When they returned, they relocated to Garrison.

Rechtschaffer got serious about jazz piano during his final semester at the University of Buffalo School of Dentistry, when he went to the head of the music department and told him he wanted to learn how to play the genre correctly.
“He said they’d take me on, but we’d be starting with Bach, Brahms and Beethoven,” he says. “He said if I wanted to play jazz, I’d need to learn this stuff. He was right.”
He met Sheilah in New York City in 1961, when they worked on different floors of an advertising agency. Bert had enlisted in the Air Force as a dentist and had taken a temporary job there while waiting for his certification.
“I sat next to the Verifax machine,” he recalls. “She’d come down, come off the elevator….  I invited her to dinner, but she was already preparing hers, and invited me to join her. We went to the Pioneer Supermarket below where she lived and got a few things, including their best dollar wine. She had her childhood piano in the apartment. Dinner was perfect. I didn’t make a pass at her, because it was too hot and she had no A/C.”

They kept up a long-distance relationship after Bert was assigned by the Air Force to a base in Goose Bay in Labrador, Newfoundland.
“It was a ham-radio romance, like a movie,” he says.
Who would play you in the movie?
“George Clooney.”
Sheilah has always been active politically; Bert initially far less so.
“I ticked her off a lot,” he says. “She was all for unilateral disarmament. We had ‘discussions’ about that.”
While they were dating, “she visited me at the Air Force base,” he recalls. “I was in the middle of making my famous martini for her when the phone rings and it’s my commanding officer, who says ‘There’s a retired general here, I want you to come over.’ When we got there, Sheilah started preaching to the guy about disarmament. I was kicking her under the table.”

ABOUT VELOURS:

On her fourth solo album, Velours, Valerie Ghent draws on the full range of her talents forged over 20+ years working with music luminaries Ashford & Simpson, Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Debbie Harry & Billy Preston to deliver a breathtaking, spell-binding performance that draws the listener in and never lets go.

Recorded in the South of France and NYC, the 11 original songs on Velours propel the listener from the transcendent luminosity and opening invocation of Love Divine to the exuberant Get Funkay, from the unstoppable New York City Streets to the heart-stopping ballad, Light in My Life.  The mesmerizing funk groove of title song Velours literally flows into the American-songbook inspired Linger (with accompanying string quartet), while future R+B classic It’s Got To Be You plays smooth counterpoint to the reggae-inspired Phased and the gospel blues of 30 Days. The deep groove of On & On flows like a river, and Love Will Keep Me Strong brings us back to the source.

Backed up by a band of internationally acclaimed musicians and vocalists from NYC, France and Guinea, Velours takes the listener on a journey through smooth soul, feel-good R+B, intimate ballads, sun-drenched reggae and pure funk. Featuring A-list musicians playing live on each song, Valerie has conjured up a hot, authentic sound, recording live with real musicians. “Real music you can touch.”

Pascal Bokar AFRO BLUE GRAZZ “SO LONG”

 American Shores (Savanna Jazz Records)

Throughout his productive musical career, guitarist/vocalist Dr. Pascal Bokar Thiam has always understood the connections between West African music and the sounds of the American South. His landmark book Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta discusses the music of the three empires that dominated the culture of West Africa starting in the 6th century, tracing the music from its role in the culture and daily life of Africa to its eventual emergence in the United States. In his teachings, lectures and music (where he displays his own individual voice), Pascal has consistently paid tribute to his ancestors. “As a musician, I have always tried to synthesize the convergence of African esthetics and appreciate their influence in the music of the African American communities of the American South, from the rural sounds of the Blues and Gospel into this music we call Jazz.”

Pascal Bokar’s American Shores, in the “AfroBlueGrazz” style coined by the album’s producer Greg Landau, is an ambitious fusion of textures and styles that comes from Bokar’s unique cultural perspective. As an accomplished jazz guitarist and scholar of African music and jazz he consistently heard clear examples of African musical concepts and instruments throughout his musical explorations. In this project he brought together accomplished musicians from Appalachia’s bluegrass style with Senegalese master drummers, African-American Rhythm and Blues singers, funky keyboards, and the stomp/clap percussion of a gospel choir. This eclectic cross cultural mix brings together long lost musical relatives as a platform for Pascal’s rich guitar and vocal improvisation.

Pascal Bokar previous recording Guitar Balafonics was selected by Downbeat Magazine as one of the “Best CDs of 2015.” Pascal Bokar is listed in Jazz journalist Scott Yanov’s Book entitled Great Jazz Guitars. Dr. Pascal Bokar Thiam is also the owner of the Award Winning Savanna Jazz Club of San Carlos, CA, and is recipient of the Jim Hall Jazz Master Award from Berklee College of Music.  Notable musicians on this record: fiddler Blaine Sprouse (Bill Monroe), bassist Tony Saunders (Eric Clapton & David Crosby), Gospel Hawkins Family, and keyboardist Steve Carter (George Benson & Bobby Womack).

“No one embodies the art of the tango better.”

Lincoln Journal Star

“He is cool, understated and makes everything look easy and natural… just as a really suave tango dancer seems not to move with feet but on wheels, Ziegler skates the keyboard.”

The Los Angeles Times

“A trip to the heart of this music… [Ziegler] is a sort of musical brujo, a conjurer who can make all within earshot a believer in his message.”
New York City Jazz Record

Pablo Ziegler Trio’s “Jazz Tango” by Dodie Miller-Gould
May 12, 2017

With Pablo Ziegler’s new CD, “Jazz Tango,” the tango lives and breathes–a common theme in Ziegler’s work; to ordinary people, there seems only so much a person can do with a tango. On this release, the music moves as if it possessed its own blood and limbs, and renders the tango a sinewy and electric thing, a move that impresses old and new fans alike.

Fortunately, all the songs are recorded live. There is something gratifying about hearing other people, faceless strangers in this case, applaud a performance that you, the listener, have also enjoyed. It is unclear whether the passion for Ziegler’s work comes from his approach—the task of making the tango new, or if it is the gravitas that comes with being a craftsman of his form. Maybe it is both. The music is enjoyable, and will teach listeners about music, about tango and about Ziegler.

In this release, Ziegler, on piano, is joined by Hector del Curto playing bandoneon, and Claudio Ragazzi on guitar. The “bandoneon” is a type of concertina popular in Argentina, Uruguay and Lithuania. The effect the instrument has on this CD is an emotive quality brought about by willowy swells and long, pensive notes. The way all three parts work together for an evocative impression on songs like “Muchacha de Boedo” where listeners can hear the piano, guitar and bandoneon take turns rising and falling, until (seemingly) exhausted, they fade out at the end. This song, like many of Ziegler’s compositions, sound as though they are the movie scores without the accompanying film.

“Libertango” is a frantic mash-up of piano and guitar, until, less than two minutes in, the piano begins a spirited motif that the other instruments begin to complement. Roughly a quarter of the way through, the song morphs again, into the tango that many listeners are used to.

“Michelangelo 70” is spirited and moody, like an expressive dancer. The word “rollicking” comes to mind at times. The bandoneon is used to punctuate the twists and turns in the song. Listeners can envision the graceful but strong moves of tango dancers.

Since his debut album in 1990, “Cuarteto Para El Nuevo Tango,” Ziegler has crafted a career out of joining the traditional to the new and making an art out of it all.

Lemon Wire

A real cooker right out of the box, it makes you glad that Ziegler is the kind of muso that sends you records where the reviews just write themselves. A mostly original date with a few Piazzollas tossed in to appease the tourists, the piano ace justifies my decision to abandon piano lessons when I was eight because I must have instinctively known I could never play like this. A masterful work by a master that loves tango so much he’d rather use his energy and smarts to move the form forward in fine style rather than keep it embalmed in amber. Must hearing if you’ve got the slightest of tango bugs.

Pablo Ziegler Trio’s “Jazz Tango” by George W. Harris
October 5, 2017

Pianist and composer Pablo Ziegler creates an intriguing trio with Hector Del Curto on bandoneon and Claudio Ragazzi on guitar through a mix of originals and pieces from Nuevo Tango icon Astor Piazzolla. The three Piazzolla pieces, “Michelangelo 70,” “Fuga y Mesterio” and “Libertango” are filled with complex moves, sensuality and drama as the strings are tapped, strummed and spliced. The dynamics rise and fall like a wave on “La Fundicion” and Old World charms are in abundance on “Elegante Canyenguito.” Ziegler is misty-eyed on “Milonga Del Adios” and the team plays a game of Peek-A-Boo on the clever “Blues Porteno.” Lots of thought mixed with heart.

A Sleepin’ Bee uses Wilson’s iconic collaborations with Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing as the starting point for a unique take on the tribute album

“Every single song in this collection hits a sweet spot of a different sort, but the most pleasing aspect of the recording is how it uncovers the stripped-down, soulful side of Kinhan’s voice.” – Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“Echoes of the artist in her own voice, that’s what so lovingly resounds in the voice of Lauren Kinhan on A Sleepin’ Bee, her tribute to Nancy Wilson.” – Michael Bourne, WBGO

“Her approach to the material is anything but conventional; with her big, flexible voice, Kinhan brings the passion of a soul singer to the improvisatory reach of a jazz diva.” – Suzanne Lorge, New York City Jazz Record

“Her luscious, velvet voice is a good place to rest your weary head.” – Ken Blanchard, Jazznote SD “A vocal tour de force” – Jazz Journal, Sally Evans-Darby

“Lauren Kinhan is a tremendously gifted jazz singer.” – Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

Whether on her own highly-acclaimed albums, as a 25-year member of the beloved vocal group New York Voices, or as co-founder of two diverse and inventive supergroups, Moss and JaLaLa, singer/songwriter Lauren Kinhan has always forged her own path as a performer, composer and improviser. With her latest, A Sleepin’ Bee (due out October 6 on her own Dotted i Records), Kinhan once again steers herself in unexpected directions with a new release that is at once the first all-standards collection of her career, a loving tribute to legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson, and unmistakably a Lauren Kinhan album – with all the unique perspective and idiosyncratic personality that has come to imply.

If the sudden appearance of an album’s worth of standards in a catalogue dominated by original songs comes as a surprise, the process of its creation is just as atypical. While Kinhan spent much of 2016 conceiving, rehearsing and workshopping the project, the circumstances of the recording arose suddenly through the auspices of her alma mater, Berklee College of Music. The session suddenly became an educational opportunity as well as a record date, providing a small group of Berklee students the invaluable privilege of observing and engaging in a recording session at the highest level.

First and foremost, though, A Sleepin’ Bee is a celebration of Nancy Wilson on the occasion of the genre- hopping singer’s 80th birthday. While Kinhan shares Wilson’s penchant for blurring stylistic boundaries, her choice of material focuses on Wilson’s early jazz albums, particularly her collaborations with Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing. Those recordings proved to be a jumping-off point for Kinhan, who utterly transforms these classic and obscure numbers with the help of pianist/creative partner Andy Ezrin and veteran producer Elliot Scheiner as well as a stellar band featuring bassist Matt Penman, drummer Jared Schonig and special guest trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

With three brilliant albums of her own songs under her belt, not to mention her game-changing work with three distinctive vocal groups and wide-ranging collaborations with singular artists from Ornette Coleman to Bobby McFerrin, Kinhan decided it was finally time to create an album more in line with the jazz tradition of interpreting

a book of standards. Of course, Kinhan has never been one to follow an obvious route, so the results quickly became something wholly her own. “I approached this project similarly to the way I write songs, except that in this case that creativity was expressed in the arranging and approach to the lyrics,” she explains. “I wanted to make an album that was inspired by Nancy Wilson but still conveys my point of view in the way that I think about, interpret and reimagine music.”

The starting point for the project quickly became Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley, the 1961 album on which the 24-year-old singer was backed by Adderley’s incredible quintet with his brother Nat, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes. Kinhan had fallen in love with the album as a young girl searching through her parents’ record collection, enamored with both Wilson’s soulful voice and her elegant image. “I remember being 7 or 8, staring at the cover of this beautiful woman in a yellow dress and connecting with the songs, the arrangements and the bite of her tone. I know those songs like I know the songs of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. So revisiting them, they feel like a favorite cashmere sweater.”

The 12 tracks on Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley were evenly split between vocal and instrumental pieces, and Kinhan interprets all but one of the vocal tunes on A Sleepin’ Bee. To fill out the repertoire, she began delving into Wilson’s catalogue – only reaching 1964 before she had more than enough to work with. The remaining repertoire is carefully cultivated from Wilson’s early-60s releases, the bulk of it coming from The Swingin’s Mutual!, Wilson’s 1960 collaboration with pianist George Shearing.

“In a way,” Kinhan says, “A Sleepin’ Bee is also a tribute to Cannonball and George Shearing and the fine musicians that played on the original recordings. The pairing of the voice and great players is what it’s all about. It’s never just about singing for me; it’s the whole creative spectrum of arranging notes and form, and connecting with the musicians.”

Those elements are combined and rearranged in disparate and intriguing ways throughout A Sleepin’ Bee, from the laid-back swing of “Let’s Live Again” to the haunted melancholy of “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” whether stretching the melody like taffy on “Never Will I Marry” (parried by Berklee classmate Jensen’s darting trumpet) or finding a playfully bold character at the heart of the title tune. She effectively melds Nat Adderley’s “The Old Country” with Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower,” and fully imbues “Born To Be Blue” with the remorseful mood inherent in its title. Kinhan’s vulnerable, stripped-down version of “Save Your Love For Me” completely reimagines Wilson’s iconic take – which Kinhan previously performed both with and for Wilson herself, first on a recording with the New York Voices and later with the Voices as part of Wilson’s 2004 induction as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master.

Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is Wilson’s debut single, “Guess Who I Saw Today,” whose lyrics haven’t exactly aged well. Kinhan puts a new twist on the tune not only with her sly vocal performance – which acidly comments on a song that frames its tale of infidelity with some decidedly Eisenhower-era social mores – but with an updated arrangement that makes the song her own, apart from Wilson’s quintessential version.

“You better have a perspective on this song, especially as a woman who’s been an outspoken feminist my whole life,” Kinhan says. “It’s not that cheating is old-fashioned; it’s the way that the story is pitched from the beginning, drawing an outmoded picture of marriage where the woman stays home, does the shopping and dotes on her husband, who spends his day at work. To chew on those words was so strange – but it was also fun to hold that mirror up to society and look at its absurdity.”

“(You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am” was a fresh discovery for Kinhan in her research for the project. Despite Wilson’s recording having won a Grammy in 1964, it was not that version but a less ornate live rendition that grabbed Kinhan’s ear, and she takes a similar approach, powerfully singing with gospel-inflected soul accompanied only by Ezrin’s lyrical piano and Penman’s subtle bass. The at times inane lyrics of “Happy Talk” are sent up in a slapstick carnival atmosphere to close the album on a particularly offbeat note.

Recording the album with multiple Grammy-winner Elliot Scheiner at Berklee’s state-of-the-art Shames Family Scoring Stage meant turning the studio into a classroom, a prospect that at first seemed daunting but that Kinhan quickly embraced. “The students brought a performance atmosphere to the session that was beautiful,” she says. “Normally recording sessions can make you incredibly self-conscious, often putting yourself under the microscope, but knowing there was an audience was really liberating. The students witnessed great players laying it down right in front of their eyes, and that made for an inspired environment. The added bonus of sharing Nancy Wilson’s legacy with them was a Sleepin’ Bee we hope to have reawakened for generations to come.”

Soul Jazz is a history of jazz and its reception in the black community in the period from the end of World War II until the end of the Vietnam War. Previous histories reflect the perspective of an integrated America, yet the United States was a segregated country in 1945. The black audience had a very different take on the music and that is the perception explored in Soul Jazz.

WATCH: Trombone Shorty joins a ‘second line’ in New Orleans

Anne Azzi Davenport Oct 19, 2017 4:06 PM EDT

Troy Andrews, better known as “Trombone Shorty,” has a word he uses to describe his music: “Supafunkrock.” On any given day, on any given song, he blends rock, pop, jazz, funk, and hip hop. The 31-year-old plays the trumpet, drums, organ and tuba as well as his signature trombone. On his latest album, “Parking Lot Symphony,” he also sings with his band Orleans Avenue.

We spent a day with him recently in his native New Orleans as he walked us through a “Second Line” — the quintessential New Orleans art form in which a band plays while onlookers join the parade.
Trombone Shorty, who had to retrofit a trumpet mouthpiece on his beloved trombone as a youngster, explained musical “tailgating” and “growling” and also riffed on the classic “When the Saints go Marching in.”

After he prepped his horn and gathered a few members of his core group at his Buckjump Studio, he set out for his childhood neighborhood of Treme, one of the oldest black neighborhoods in America. As shown in the recent HBO series of the same name, “Treme” remains an important center of the city’s African-American and Creole culture, especially the modern brass band traditions.
Trombone Shorty said he always makes a point of dropping by his old neighborhood when he stops home briefly from his tours.

To supplement the “first line,” the musicians had to seek out a tuba player in the neighborhood and then the “second line,” the music fanatics, followed. They played for us in front of the world-famous Candlelight Lounge. As part of the tradition, cars passing beeped horns in support.

Councilman Introduces Bill to Rename the Williamsburg Bridge After Sonny Rollins | Bowery Boogie

Councilman Introduces Bill to Rename the Williamsburg Bridge After Sonny Rollins

For one Lower East Sider, the quest to rename the Williamsburg Bridge after Jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins just took a major step forward. City Council is now reviewing a bill that would make this happen.
In response to this community led effort, Brooklyn Councilman Stephen Levin introduced the bill, which is also supported by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. The legislation, still in its infancy, calls for the rechristening of the bridge to the Sonny Rollins Bridge.
Why, you ask?
Norfolk Street resident Jeff Caltabiano began spearheading the effort last spring, shining a light on the connection between the legendary musician and this East River span. Sonny Rollins once lived at 400 Grand Street, now buried beneath a fifteen-story tower for the Essex Crossing development (i.e. Site 5). While taking a two-year hiatus from recording and performing in 1959, the horn player would seek refuge on the pedestrian path of the East River span, as “I had no place to practice…my neighbor on Grand Street was the drummer Frankie Dunlop, and his wife was pregnant,” he wrote in the New York Times two years ago. “Nobody was there, and it was beautiful. I went to the bridge to practice just about every day for two years. Playing against the sky really does improve your volume, and your wind capacity.”
Caltabiano wants to make this musical footnote known. “For all of his brilliance, resilience, longevity, and humanity, we must honor Sonny Rollins, the Saxophone Colossus,” he said of the grassroots campaign to rename the bridge. “This project dreams that one day Mr. Rollins will once more step onto his bridge, The Sonny Rollins Bridge, and feel the freedom of the open sky.”
“I first listened to Sonny Rollins at the age of 13. His music and his story has stayed with me to this day,” said Councilman Stephen Levin, the bill’s sponsor.  “Looking around New York City you’ll see plenty of monuments to politicians,” he added. “You won’t see many monuments to cultural pioneers that embody the spirit of the city.”
Below is a short documentary piece about Rollins’ two-year sabbatical on the bridge, produced by the Rollins Bridge team.
What do you think of the effort?

Lance Bryant and Christian Fabian met in the Lionel Hampton Big Band, and were brought up like Jason Marsalis in old school jazz roots. And they religiously practice the first commandment of the old school:
“Thou shalt give the audience a great show!” do for you? is proof that jazz roots grow into exciting new tunes, thrive in new times, and produce new jazz masters.

“YAY! Wow, it’s a killer! “do for you” did me! I’m overwhelmed. You guys are just the best. Your talent, it’s just huge.

Thanks for the music guys. You’re just heavy!!! —Tri Nguyen

Latest album | Post No Bills

“The gorgeous piano trio heard here has been together since they formed in 1996 at the University of Southern California’s music school. Even in a world of younger jazz pianists that includes the great Brad Mehldau, Reitan would clearly now be a standout. And his trio with bassist Jack Daro and drummer Dean Koba is unusually fine, especially when you consider the truly exalted taste with which the whole disc was programmed…Reitan is a pianist who can, when necessary, gobble up the keyboard at racehorse tempo, but he is, at heart, a lyric player writing tender waltzes like “Spring” and playing some of the most heart-rending music in the jazz pianist’s repertoire (“I Loves You Porgy”) as well as some that is among the artfully adaptable uptempo “standards” in any band book (“Stella By Starlight.”) A delicious jazz piano trio.”

– Jeff Simon –The Buffalo News, NY

“Defining Reitan’s piano style isn’t easy because he’s not easily boxed in. That said, he’s most at home with light-touch, fleet-fingered runs on the uptempo numbers (Keith Jarrett’s “The Mourning of a Star,” Chick Corea’s “Windows”) and broad, elegiac statements on the ballads (Horace Silver’s “Lonely Woman,” Reitan’s own “Solitude”)…The Reitan-penned title track, intro’d by the pianist alone, graceful and sure, is transformed midway through into a frolicsome and gregarious chase scene. Greg Reitan, it would certainly appear by now, is firmly committed both to honoring the piano trio tradition and ensuring that it doesn’t get stuck in a rut.”

– Jeff Tamarkin — JazzTimes Magazine

“Los Angeles-based pianist/composer Greg Reitan’s Some Other Time (Sunnyside Records) vied for the honors of “Debut of the Year” in 2009. Using his same trio—with bassist Jack Daro and drummer Dean Koba—Reitan followed up that auspicious start with two more outstanding sets, Antibes (2010) and Daybreak (2011), both for the Sunnyside label.  With this same trio—they have been together since 1996—he has honed an elegant and polished sound…the light touch, subtle dynamics, translucent harmonic beauty. Post No Bills builds on that approach, with a bit more of an edge this time around…”

– Dan McClenaghan — All About Jazz

One Water Street – Brooklyn, NY – 11201

Richard will be playing a highly original program of works in his unique style, representing his extensive background in both jazz/Brazilian and classical traditions. He’ll premiere his new work, “Dança de Roda”, a tone poem depicting visual scenes of Brazil’s 18th century slave culture. In “Trilogy for the Survivors” (of Hurricane Katrina), he has combined contemporary bossa nova rhythms with the classical prelude and fugue form. He’ll also be presenting the first live performances of his eclectic work, “Calling Jobim”, based on the format of the late composer’s very popular song, “Dindi”, and Brazilian composer Carlos Galvaõ’s “Voô Noturno” (Night Flight). He’ll include his own arrangements of music by several of his favorite Brazilian composers, including close longtime friend, the late Amazônian composer, Thiago de Mello – a familiar voice to Warwick audiences.

Being a long time educator, Richard will offer off the cuff background tales and relatable descriptions of how the music is put together.

Starting time is 8 PM, and admission is a suggested donation of $15.

The Kawai baby grand piano is graciously provided by adamspiano.com of New Paltz, New York.
