Now this is a great idea! In the aftermath of the long-running, Tony-winning Jersey Boys, all of a sudden, there’s an abundance of talented, trained Broadway-centric singers out there who are suddenly well-versed in the elusive intricacies of that much-abused musical form known as doo-wop. First, you start with quintet of former Jersey Boys cast members – from the myriad of productions, the original Broadway cast and replacements, the road companies and regional productions, what have you. Then, you build what amounts to a “jukebox musical” but without the musical theater part. (And thus, thankfully, without dialog like “It used to be about the music, man!”) In other words, you just have the actual music being performed by an inspired group of young tenors, baritones and bassos, who take the best hits of the 1950s and the doo-wop era (which really reaches a climax and all-time apogee with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons) and sing the heck out of it. (The heck, I say!) The Doo Wop project, backed by the Motortown Band, does for the best pop music of the era – especially the Imperials, the Penguins, the Flamingos (and other ornithological ensembles) roughly what the Fab Faux does for The Beatles, meaning that they don’t treat it like a nostalgia act, or a wedding / cover band, they sing it as if it was music – and quintessential American pop music at that.

Michael Moss’ Accidental Orchestra performs the second of three installments of Qabbala::Entanglement on the autumnal equinox, September 20, 2019. Qabbala::Entanglement is a twelve movement suite inspired by Michael Moss’s long study of Eastern mythology, physics, and Jungian analytic psychology. Using improvisation over an extended compositional structure Moss uses each of the 12 movements to express a sephira or “limb” of the Tree of Life.

The Accidental Orchestra is a cross between a big band and an orchestra. It is jazz from the 21st century standing on and extending the tradition.  “Moss’ astute penchant for melding the outside parameters of jazz with imaginative compositions and a wide-ranging improvisational platform delivers the knockout punch (Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz, June 7, 2018).”

The Accidental Orchestra is comprised of a pool of the most exciting improvising artists on the New York scene: Jason Kao Hwang, Rosi Hertlein, Melanie Dyer, Leonor Falcon, Carol Buck, Lenny Mims, Brian Groder, Waldron Mahdi Ricks, Libby Schwartz, Peter Zummo, Steve Swell, JD Parran, Elliot Levin, Michael Lytle, Ras Moshe Burnett, Dave Sewelson, Steve Cohn, Dom Minasi, Chien Chien Lu, Ken Filiano, Bob Meyer, Warren Smith, Michael Wimberly.

Michael Moss released the Accidental Orchestra’s first cd, HELIX, in 2018 on 4th Stream Records with two compositions–The Old One and C# or Bb. HELIX had the honor of being voted one of the best albums of 2018 by Avant Music News, received enthusiastic world-wide reviews which may be found at https://m2-theory.com/helix-reviews and can be downloaded at Hearnow.

QABALLAH::ENTANGLEMENT is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). LMCC empowers artists by providing them with networks, resources, and support, to create vibrant, sustainable communities in Manhattan and beyond.

Award-Winning Australian Jazz And Blues Singer
Jessie Gordon To Make New York Debut

Jessie Gordon will perform at The Cutting Room on Monday 30th September 2019 at 7pm

Jessie Gordon is a 15 time Fringe World Music and Cabaret award winning singer, musician and dancer with a passion for jazz, blues and roots music. Set to make her New York and US stage debut at The Cutting Room, Jessie has been singing since she was 15 years old, has fronted everything from jazz duos to big bands, and has even appeared solo with nothing but a loop pedal. She has toured extensively through Europe, Asia and Australia, and has been received with mass critical acclaim.

This talented and versatile performer knows how to build rapport with a crowd, an ability that has earned her a solid reputation and loyal following internationally. No stranger to the darker side of jazz, Jessie combines her love of blues, swing and early jazz music in a show not to be missed. There are songs for the swooning moonshiners, those inclined to wine, those frisky for whisky and some odes to our favourite friends, those tenders of the bar. In the dark, dingy corners and smoky recesses of the Golden Era of Swing, there are songs for every appetite, beautiful harmonies for your soul and heart aching melodies to ease your troubles.

Jessie Gordon has released five albums, including her 2018 album of original songs, entitled “A Work of Friction”. This year’s release, “Best Friends” is a compilation of jazz and original acoustic music recorded with long-time collaborator Mark Turner.

“Gordon’s vocals are exquisite, ranging from breathy and soft to hearty and raspy, changing with each style of song. Her musical expertise, rhythm and timing are mesmerising.”
– Laura Keenan, Fringe Feed

“Gordon has once again shown how immensely talented she really is, her understanding of Jazz in all its forms, her creativity and multi faceted ability to make music with a variety of instruments, or no instruments, a powerful and exquisite voice with a range that is unmatched, and an ability to command the crowd’s attention and participation.”
– Amanda Lancaster, Fourth Wall Media

If I recommend this show, you can rest assured that it’s worth catching, since my cynicism re higher education is well known (thank you Malcolm Gladwell) and I don’t have anything like a horse in this race. (In fact, I don’t know whom to root for; in this respect, the contest of Harvard vs. Yale strikes me overall as oddly reminiscent of the Iran-Iraq war.) However, I have seen at least two of the previous four evenings of this competition, and in spite of my general apathy regarding the overall concept, I’ve found it to be an enjoyable and stimulating evening of song, artfully presented by those two highly-sagacious hosts Tom Toce and Victoria Ordin. Considering that Leonard Bernstein and Alan Jay Lerner both went to Harvard and Cole Porter famously attended Yale, maybe there’s something to this Ivy League jazz after all.

The New York based tenor saxophonist Ray Blue, who has a deep tone and a melodic style, is featured on WORK, a set of accessible yet quietly creative music. The program mixes together three of his originals with surprising versions of standards and lesser known but superior jazz songs. He and Randy Klein, head of Jazzheads Music Group, worked diligently to achieve the appealing Old School feel and sound that Blue’s listeners want to hear.

Blue teams up with three pianists (Sharp Radway, Kirk Lightsey and Benito Gonzalez), guitarist Jeff Barone, bassist Essiet Okon Essiet, drummer Steve Johns and, on three songs apiece, the rambunctious trombonist Ron Wilkins and percussionist Neil Clark. Starting with the exuberant “Work,” the program includes such surprises as an uptempo transformation of “Lift Every Voice And Sing,” two versions of “That’s All” (including a duet with pianist Lightsey), a playful rendition of “Don’t Know Why,” and a cooking “Everything Happens To Me” which is normally taken as a slow ballad. Blue, displaying a large tone that almost sounds like a baritone in spots, is heard at his best on his original ballad “My Friend And I Took A Walk” and “Our Day Will Come” which benefits from a shuffle rhythm. Trombonist Wilkins is quite boisterous on Nat Adderley’s soulful “Sweet Emma,” the Jimmy Smith minor blues “Mellow Mood,” and George Coleman’s “Amsterdam After Dark.” Another highpoint is Blue’s “Attitude” which, after an energized and surprising melody, becomes a hot swinger that features the composer.

Ray Blue has been an important saxophonist for the past 20 years, leading his own CDs on a regular basis since 2001. Among those who he has worked with through the years have been John Gilmore, Art Davis, Benny Powell, Eddie Henderson, the Charlie Persip Super Band, Wycliffe Gordon, Steve Turre, Ted Curson, and The Sun Ra Arkestra. The saxophonist, who has appeared at many international jazz festivals, has also been an influential educator and is the founder of Cross-Cultural Connection, Inc. a non-profit organization that promotes jazz culture, performance and education.

WORK is one of Ray Blue’s most enjoyable outings to date, a melodic set that will appeal to a large audience, especially those who enjoy the Old School swinging jazz style and sound.

Brazilian Music Foundation Presents Marcello Linhos & Armorial – Viola Caipira

 Brazilian Music Foundation<!–

Just a reminder!

VIOLA CAIPIRA
Brazilian Folk
Music
Sept 15th, 2019 – 7:30 pm @ Drom – NYC
85 Avenue A, East Village, NYC 10009

Brazilian Music Foundation and Asuos Productions have the pleasure of presenting for the first time in New York City Marcello Linhos & Armorial “Viola Caipira” as part of our annual cultural and educational program. “Viola Caipira” it is predominantly played in the Brazilian countryside and small towns, also known as “Viola Sertaneja”, “Cabocla” or “Brazilian chordophone.” It is a recognized example of traditional Brazilian folk music, folkloric, also called sertaneja music.

Coming up soon! Message from Armorial Group to NYC!

Marcello Linhos & Armorial

The group, winner of FAC Conexão Cultura/Brasilia, DF,  will present a rich and sensitive repertoire that has enchanted Brazilians from all walks of life. They simply propose a new form of Brazilian regional music whose essence binds us with the deep rooted, singular feeling of love of our land. This music connects us to each other and to our origins. It resonates and rekindles the past bringing forth often hidden and unknown memories in our hearts.
Recapturing the musical style for today rekindles the connection to the caipira feeling within each of our hearts, an essential emotion, so simple and yet at the same time as elaborate as love. With great care, respect and attention, old peasant waltzes and one hundred year old sertanejo modinhas like “Tristezas do Jeca” (Jeca’s Sorrows) by Angelino de Oliveira, and “Rosa” ( Rose) by Conde Affonso Celso Junior  receive a new look and join new arrangements of regional music classics like the acclaimed “Trem do  Pantanal” (Wetland Train) by Almir Sater and “Romaria” (Pilgrimage) by  Renato Teixeira. The new Brazilian regional music is centenary and at the same time modern. Marcello Linhos and his Armorial raise the flag and thrill their audience at the first touch of the viola bringing out the country feeling latent in each of our hearts.

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
 Antonio Carlos Jobim

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”
Billy Hart

KT Sullivan & Jeff Harnar Sing Sheldon Harnick & Charles Strouse
Laurie Beechman Theater at the West End Cafe
407 W. 42nd Street
Tuesday, September 10

shem.gif

This particular show is all about duos and trios: when you look on stage, your eyes see only singers KT Sullivan and Jeff Harnar, but the presence of director and Svengali-in-miniature Sondra Lee is so keenly felt throughout that she might as well be up there performing with them. The trio of Sullivan, Harnar, and Lee has already delivered an impressive and highly-original two-part take on the music of Stephen Sondheim, and thus it’s highly fitting that they should thus take on the works of Sheldon Harnick and Charles Strouse, who rank alongside Mr. Sondheim (and the perennially underappreciated Jerry Herman) as the greatest creators of musical theater who are still active and with us. Since Mr. Harnick wrote most of his best lyrics to music by the late Jerry Bock, and Mr. Strouse with Lee Adams and the late Martin Charnin, I’m not sure if that makes the creative team behind this show a septet or an octet or what, especially considering the musical direction of the formidable Jon Weber, who’s so talented (and so tall) that he’s practically a duo all by himself.

“Truly a masterwork of modern-day Brazilian guitar!”
– Jonathan Widran, Contemporary Fusion Reviews – May 7, 2019 read full review

“I love your new CD! Beautiful repertoire, arrangements and performances! It’s a new, exotic journey and concept that works brilliantly. Thanks for sending, and bravo to all for the terrific project! “
– Sharon Isbin, Grammy Award® winning, International Guitarist

“A Great Album…”
– Classical Guitar Magazine

“Del Casale and Barbosa-Lima—who have been collaborators for more than 15 years—offer a gorgeous duo reading of “Manhã De Carnaval” that tugs at the heartstrings.”
– Downbeat Magazine

Rio’s musical traditions are the very grist for this production. Delicado is a tribute to the music of this renowned and beloved city. “We wanted to honor the exuberant nature and welcoming spirit of the cariocas,” said Carlos Barbosa-Lima, the guitar maestro and leader of this production. So, he with his fellow musical partners selected several compositions that were written by cariocas or by those familiar with Rio. And what a band Carlos has gathered: Larry Del Casale (guitar/producer), Duduka da Fonseca (percussion), Nilson Matta (bass), and Helio Alves (piano).
Kabir Sehgal Executive Producer

“Carlos is a giant amongst guitarists. His arrangements on Delicado are subtle, sophisticated and virtuosic, taking his harmonic language to a new level. To expand on these arrangements, we enlisted some of the greatest Brazilian jazz musicians performing and recording today. Working with them was a dream and an honor. Therefore, a big abraco to the musicians, engineers, Kabir, ZOHO Music, and my dearest friend who inspires me to play my very best, Carlos Barbosa-Lima!”

Bennett Paster’s June, 2019 release Indivisible has been garnering critical reviews in the press and has been in regular rotation on over 20 college and public radio stations, charting in the jazz top 10 in several markets.  The band’s next performance is Tuesday, Sept 3rd at 8pm at Halyards in Brooklyn.  Join them for one long set of original funky jazz at this cool Brooklyn bar, rapidly becoming a destination to hear creative improvisation in the borough.

“A very fine keyboardist and pianist, Bennett Paster grows by leaps and bounds with every project.  On his new CD Indivisible, he doesn’t synthesize his influences, but rather turns every composition into his own private vision of blues, mainstream jazz, funk, New Orleans and beyond… He displays bebop sensibilities while reserving the best of his immense talents for a sense of teamwork.”    (MGN, Hot House Magazine, June 2019)

Paster’s piano trio, featuring the great Ed Howard on bass and always-swinging Joe Strasser on drums will make their Mezzrow debut the following Monday, September 9th, with sets at 7:30 and 9pm.  Expect to hear a broad-based selection of standards, jazz standards, originals and even some Stevie Wonder and Beatles songs performed in a swinging while conversational, classic trio context. Mezzrow is NYC’s premier intimate piano listening room, so be sure to make reservations in advance.

One of the top jazz pianists of the past half-century and an eclectic improviser who has long had his own sound and open-minded style, Kellaway has been featured on hundreds of recordings and written a countless amount of music since the 1960s. As is obvious from his most recent recording, New Jazz Standards, Kellaway has lost none of his creativity, virtuosity, enthusiasm or willingness to stretch himself.

When asked what material his trio might be performing at Birdland, Kellaway said “It will be a journey through the melodies of my life…Alfie’s Theme (which he recorded with Sonny Rollins in 1965), a few songs from his Oscar Peterson tribute album Heroes (which won the French Classic Jazz award), two tunes from Carl Saunders New Jazz Standards Vol 3, and a few brand new original compositions.

At the same time that the Roger Kellaway Trio will be performing at the Birdland Theater downstairs, the Birdland Jazz Club upstairs will be hosting the Django Festival (November 12-17) celebrating their 20th anniversary with the Django Festival Allstars, produced by Pat Philips Stratta. “They always have a guest each night, so for the two nights that I’m at Birdland, I will also be their special guest. And some of their Allstars, such as violinist Pierre Blanchard and accordionist Ludovic Beier, will join me downstairs as my special guests!”

Kellaway has performed on hundreds of jazz recordings. A few of his personal favorites are Wes Montgomery’s Bumpin, Oliver Nelson’s More Blues And The Abstract Truth, and The Power Of Positive Swinging with Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer”. Beyond jazz, he has worked as a musical director for Bobby Darin & Tony Bennett. As composer, he has 29 film scores to his name and wrote the well-known closing theme song for All In The Family (“Remembering You”). He’s worked with everyone from Ellington to Elvis, Carmen McRae to Barbra Streisand, Joni Mitchel and Quincy Jones to Yo-Yo Ma.

“I’ve always liked playing Birdland, I performed at the original one on 52nd and Broadway with Kai Winding’s band when I was in my early twenties. I’ve known Gianni Valenti, the present owner for about 20 years, and I am delighted to be celebrating my 80thwith my trio in the new Birdland Theater!”

The remarkable pianist/composer will be in typically inspired and inventive form during his two special nights at the Birdland Theater November 15 & 16. For more information about the historic engagement  www.birdlandjazz.com and www.rogerkellaway.com

PEARRING SOUND  “Nothing But Time”
(Self Produced) Street Date: October 4,2019

Time to wonder, time to wander, time to listen, time to sing… but no time for jive.  In the clean air of Manitou Springs, Colorado, with the Garden of the Gods his backyard, alto saxophonist Jeff Pearring grew up in harmony with nature, and has remained, amidst the hustle of the music scene and bustle of 21stcentury Brooklyn, in tune with himself.

As the West was a place for settlers to become who they wanted to be and discover who they were, so music affords a realm to bare and share our spirit, to find beauty in our surroundings and share our joy.  Sagacious guides are always helpful to explorers, and at an early age, after realizing he was not cut out for the trumpet, Jeff found the propitiously-named Bud Reed, who steered him to the saxophone.  Jeff landed in New York in 2002, after playing in college with ska/reggae and blues bands, wanting more of a shaping effect on the music he played. In 2005 he met the inimitable Connie Crothers, whose prime pedagogical tenet was to help musicians unearth their own inner voice.  The results of their collaboration can be heard on the 2015 live recording, True Story.  Jeff Pearring has found his sound.

In fact, Pearring Sound is the rubric under which Jeff assembles various combinations of New York improvisers, pairing players of different generations, one such being a Double Trio, inspired by Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz double quartet, which includes, in addition to two thirtysomething altoists, two septuagenarian drummers.  The singular trio heard here is filled out by stalwart bassist Adam Lane, who has performed internationally with everyone from Bernard Purdie to John Tchicai and whose widely acclaimed Full Throttle Orchestra recordings on Clean Feed mark him as a leading bandleader/composer in his own right, and relative newcomer drummer Tim Ford, who meets the music’s twists and turns with do-or-die Bed Stuy élan and aplomb. The group has performed regularly for the past year, and it shows; each of the three can fly fancy free, knowing the others have his back and will bring him home.

This studio recording offers Jeff the opportunity not only to showcase the group’s telepathic improvisation and sense of spontaneous composition, but also utilize modern technology to extend its sonic dimensions.  All the tracks, all group originals save Duke Ellington’s composition Blue Pepper, were created in the moment—no overdubbing—in two sessions, recorded 15 days apart.  At the first, with Lane playing electric bass, the empathetic collaboration of engineer Jon Rosenberg selectively enhanced harmonies and rhythms implicit in the playing.  The second gave free rein to the trio to stretch their acoustic sounds au naturel.Together, they take the listener on a hitherto uncharted journey through space and time.

In a time when the music world is brimming with budding virtuosos who know and play everything, it’s a breath of fresh air to encounter someone who knows and plays himself.  If you haven’t already, it’s time to listen to Jeff Pearring.

Howard Johnson is universally known as the finest proponent of jazz tuba in the world, as well as being quite proficient on the baritone saxophone.  He also plays flugelhorn, bass clarinet, cornet, and penny whistle among other instruments.  Howard was born in Montgomery, Alabama on August 7, 1941.  He taught himself the baritone sax in 1954 and the tuba a year later.  He moved to new York in 1963-at a time when the tuba was not a fashionable jazz instrument (outside of the New Orleans-style bass-line chores, the only visible player was Ray Draper) but Charles Mingus welcomed Howard into his workshop in 1964.  In 1965 he played with the Archie Shepp band for some months and appeared with him at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1966 and 1968.  Gil Evans used his multi-instrumental capacity at various points between 1966 and 1988.

Lou Volpe’s show is full of good rhythm feel with guitar virtuosity and a unique sound is the backdrop for spirited and soulful versions of songs from the Sinatra era to Clapton & Santana, to Sting & Michael Jackson, with a salute to jazz greats and pop stars (many of whom Lou has played with) along the way.

Some exciting originals are also part of Lou’s personable & inspiring show, including a sampling of his new music from his soon to be released CD, BEFORE AND AFTER (Jazz Guitar Records), BEFORE AND AFTER will release October/November 2019.

“Lou Volpe is a guitarist who has the groove down pat, with the harmonic and melodic sensibilities to put a personal stamp on all his flights.” — Nick Jones, All About Jazz

A native New Yorker, Lou Volpe is a standard not only on the New York music scene, but also recognized internationally as a master of the guitar. His artistry is combined with elegance, fire and soul coupled with a seductive, lyrical sound.

Volpe’s empathetic virtuosity has allowed him to work in a wide variety of musical contexts while developing a unique approach to the guitar – a warm and lyric romanticism that illuminates the worlds of Jazz, R&B and Adult Contemporary.

Having a past resume of performance and recording credits with diverse artists such as Peggy Lee, Chaka Khan, Bo Diddley, David “Fathead” Newman, Chet Baker, Liza Minnelli, Lionel Hampton, Roberta Flack, Phoebe Snow, The Manhattan Transfer and numerous others; touring extensively with Bette Midler, Judy Collins and the legendary Herbie Mann (for whom he composed, arranged and co-produced) has recognized his talent as a sought-after performer either solo or with his group. Fall marks not only back to school but back to Jazz at the Spring, and there is no better way to start our season than with the Jazz Colleagues. The Jazz Colleagues is a collective of jazz artists founded by Patricia Dalton Fennell, Bard College jazz professor John Esposito, and internationally recognized bass player Ira Coleman. Together they lead a multidisciplinary group of artists who come together to perform, record and teach. They make music spanning the history of jazz. They engage audiences with their virtuosity as they easily navigate the jazz repertoire delighting in the depth and breadth of the music, with selections ranging from Tin Pan Alley to Songbook – traditional and modern jazz styles, including standards, bebop, and bossa nova. This concert will feature early 20th century music, jazz standards, song book, and classical/ jazz adaptions.

Patricia Dalton Fennell grew up in a musical family, she began classical piano with Lester Taylor at 6, and continued her piano studies at Skidmore college, before attending the college of St. Rose as a classical voice performance major. From her musical beginnings as a classical vocalist, she discovered jazz in a partnership with master pianist and composer John Esposito, and has been an active jazz vocalist and producer in the Capital District and Hudson Valley for many years. Patricia has performed with and/or recorded with a host of award winning, world-class musicians, including those joining her at Jazz at the Spring. Most recently Patricia has produced two critically acclaimed recordings: Chris Pasin’s, Ornettiquette, dedicated to the work of Ornette Coleman (#23 on the Jazzweek chart 2018), and Chris Pasin’s, Baby it’s Cold Outside (top 50 on the Jazzweek chart 2017), of Dalton’s performance David McGee of Deep Roots, notes, “… in that one of the album’s great gifts to listeners is its sheer humanity: love of the songs radiates from the performances. The black and white cover shot may suggest the bleak midwinter, but on the inside, abundant soul abounds.”

John Esposito is an American pianist/composer/drummer/producer who works on a wide array of creative music projects. His technical skills and the range of his artistic palette extend across the stylistic boundaries of the stride piano, swing, bebop, modal and free music movements. He has performed and recorded with artists including Nick Brignola, Dave Douglas, Dave Holland, Carter Jefferson, Franklin Kiermyer, Joe Lovano, J.R. Monterose, David “Fathead” Newman, Eric Person, Arthur Rhames, Sam Rivers, Roswell Rudd, Pharaoh Sanders and John Stubblefield. John is the owner/executive producer of Sunjump records. He has created music for theater, dance, film, tv commercials, and multimedia performance art. He is a music faculty member and artist-in-residence at Bard College.

Ira Coleman’s impressively lyrical bass playing has helped shape the groove for many notable musicians throughout the years, but if you’ve only heard of him recently, chances are that you know him from his work with Sting, who Ira has toured with since 2009. Ira has played on Sting’s three latest albums, as well as nearly a hundred albums with other artists. “The bass fits my character,” says Ira, who graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1985. “In most musical genres the bass is the pivotal center piece, the instrument which provides a discrete and clear foundation, and I enjoy the many challenges its function poses.” Ira’s first love though, is jazz, and his resumé tells the story. Over the years, Ira has worked with such well-known figures as Cab Calloway, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter. He was musical director for vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and toured with her internationally from 2002 until 2009.

Chris Pasin, trumpet, composer, and band leader, studied at The New England Conservatory. His brilliant trumpet sound has filled Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater, Royal Albert Hall, the Village Vanguard, Ronnie Scott’s, and the Blue Note; he has traveled with Buddy Rich and performed with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Ray Charles, Toshiko Akiyoshi–Lew Tabackin Big Band, Brother Jack McDuff, and many others. He plays with musical artists of all genres, in groups large and small; is a leader himself, and has produced and recorded several outstanding CD’s featuring his own creative compositions including “Random Acts of Kindness,” and his latest “Ornettiquette,” featuring the music of and inspired by Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. He’s been a member of Lee Shaw’s quintet, the popular Reelin’ in the Years show, and curated a popular weekly jazz series.

Reeds player, Charles Frommer began playing professionally in his hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, before studying with Ran Blake at the New England Conservatory. He has had active career, as a freelancer in Boston and New York City, working in radio, television, and film, as well as touring internationally. In addition to playing with Hudson Valley jazz groups Inner Door and the Eastern Standard Jazz Trio, he has worked with such diverse artists as Roswell Rudd, John Esposito, Cameron Brown, Natalie Merchant, and Dr. John. He can currently be heard with the Swing Vipers jazz trio, the Tom DePetris Quartet, and frequently sits-in with the Metropolitan Hot Club.

Jazz at the Spring is held the last Thursday of each month at the Spring Street Gallery, Saratoga Springs, and is sponsored by Capital District Jazz, Ltd. (CDJ) a 501©3 not-for-profit organization formed by practitioners and fans who love jazz music. American in origin, jazz reaches and draws from millions of performers and listeners around the globe who are inspired by its rich history, excited by its technical complexity, and moved by its emotional depth. The members of CDJ want to share their love of jazz with current and potential performers and enthusiasts throughout the “Capital District”. CDJ’s mission is to build and serve a wider audience for jazz through education; to create performance opportunities for jazz musicians; and to develop venues for these pursuits. CDJ supports All Ears: Jazz and Improvised Music Workshop, which is a fun hands-on way for students of all ages to learn about jazz. CDJ is offering a number of free tickets for youth age 17 and under. If you are interested in obtaining a free ticket please inquire via email info@cdjazz.org.

Dear Jazz Friends and Beyond:

Almost one year ago, on October 25, 2018, the jazz world was shocked and saddened to learn the news of Sonny Fortune’s sudden passing as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage.  After months of planning, the Fortune family, along with friends, colleagues and band members of Sonny Fortune are proud to present a memorial service for the legendary saxophonist/composer. The memorial will be held on Monday September 30, 2019, from 6:30PM to 9:00PM at St. Peters Church, 619 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10022.

Cornelius “Sonny” Fortune was born on May 19, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA. Growing up in Philly, Sonny was steeped in the city’s vibrant jazz scene with musicians such as Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane, Jimmy Heath and many others.  Following his move to New York City in 1967, Fortune began working with the great drummer Elvin Jones, who hired the saxophonist on the basis of the recommendation of Coltrane.  Later, Sonny played a major role in some of the most significant jazz bands in the history of the genre including Mongo Santamaria, McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Nat Adderley, Buddy Rich and many others.

Fortune released his debut recording as a leader, Long Before Our Mothers Cried, on the legendary Strata East label, in 1967.  The date featuring trumpeter Charles Sullivan and pianist Stanley Cowell established Fortune as one of the most important bandleaders of the day. In the ensuing years he recorded more than twenty more critically acclaimed albums featuring many of jazz’s most creative instrumentalists, including pianists Kenny Barron, John Hicks and Larry Willis. Fortune remained active up until his final days playing with his own quartet with pianist Michael Cochrane, bassist Calvin Hill and drummer Steve Johns, as well as with the allstar cooperative group Four Generations of Miles, with fellow Davis alumni Mike Stern, Buster Williams and Jimmy Cobb.

Please join us in a very well deserved tribute to one of the true giants of the saxophone hosted by Rob Crocker from WBGO 88.3 FM and a stellar line up of world class jazz artists, including Kenny Barron, Ronnie Burrage, George Cables, Ron Carter, Billy Hart, Azar Lawrence, Jimmy Owens, Odean Pope, Wallace Roney, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Buster Williams, Larry Willis, David Williams and many others.

Sincerely,

The Family and Friends of Sonny Fortune

Somewhere it is written that all singing trumpeters with loud, exuberant (and especially, raspy) and extrovertedly emotional voices will be compared to Louis Armstrong, whereas those with a soft, understated and more introverted approach will invariably be likened to Chet Baker. There are dozens of other role models for trumpeter-vocalists, from Red Allen, Jabbo Smith, Louis Prima, and Hot Lips Page to Jack Sheldon, but Pops and Chet would seem to be the two major options. Augie Haas certainly sounds more like the latter than the former, but there’s no imitation involved, and what’s more, he doesn’t invite the comparison by doing songs associated with either of his brass-vocal forebears. Rather, his latest of five albums, Dream a Little Dream of Me, which features a full string orchestra and gorgeous arrangements, uses a thoughtful and original line-up of tunes. Surprisingly, the rock-pop songbook of the 1950s is the most obvious point of departure, including a reading of “I Only Have Eyes for You” based more directly on the Flamingos (rather than Busby Berkeley and Dick Powell), as well as a jazzy 4/4 swing version of “Love Me Tender” and “Earth Angel,” the 1954 breakthrough doo-wop hit by the Penguins. Elsewhere, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” the Beatles’s “Blackbird,” and “Stand by Me” (a song that needs a string orchestra for the final fadeout, since it essentially has no ending) take us a decade forward into the pop 1960s. (Then there’s “Ooh Child,” the 1970 hit by the Five Stairsteps, though, like me, he probably first heard it via Nina Simone.) Dream a Little Dream of Me is a beautiful album, and Mr. Haas should be able to make it translate into the intimate space of the Birdland Theater even without all the orchestral trappings.

While We Are Still Here Presents the
Fourth Annual Sugar Hill Music Festival!
Performances by the Sugar Hill Quartet, Firey String Sistas!, and Soul Understated featuring Mavis Swan Poole

Kick-off of “Reading Across Harlem,” with author LaShawn Harris

shem.gif
New York City’s longest-running house band, Harlem’s own Sugar Hill Quartet (with a very Special Guest), co-headline While We Are Still Here’s 4th Annual Sugar Hill Music Festival, Saturday, September 7, 2019, 3pm, at the Sugar Hill Luminaries Lawn, on Edgecombe Avenue and 155th Street, in Harlem. Sharing the stage will be the Firey String Sistas! and Soul Understated featuring Mavis Swan Poole. This year’s Reading Across Harlemfeatures Lashawn Harris, author of Sex Workers, Psychics, and Numbers Runners: Black Women in New York City’s Underground Economy, is an expert on Madam Stephanie St. Clair, legendary numbers banker and activist. Ms. St. Clair is prominently featured in the publication. Novella Ford, of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, will interview Ms. Harris. Her book will be available for sale. WBGO’s Sheila Anderson will serve as the emcee for the day’s festivities.

While We Are Still Here (WWSH) is a heritage-preservation organization, founded to celebrate the history of Harlem, with a mission to ensure“that the ‘post-gentrification’ community of Harlem and beyond will honor and find a meaningful connection to the legacy of African-American achievement, and its paramount importance to world culture.” Annually, the Sugar Hill Music Festival pays homage to the musicians and composers, who contributed to Harlem’s spectacular influence upon the world of music—from spirituals to jazz, from funk to R&B, the blues, and European classical music.

Initially, WWSH’s heritage-preservation activities were, primarily, focused on 409 and 555 Edgecombe Avenue, because these two addresses were top heavy with African-American movers and shakers from every sphere, for nearly one hundred years. Residents included W.E.B Du Bois, Paul Robe-son, Thurgood Marshall, Elizabeth Catlett, Count Basie, Billy Strayhorn, and Cassandra Wilson. However, the organization has broadened its scope to include Harlem, in general. (Please visit www.wwsh.nyc)

While We Are Still Here receives the support of the West Harlem Development Corporation and the Puffin Foundation.

Performer and Participant Biographies

The Sugar Hill Quartet, led by Patience Higgins, is the longest-running house band in New York City, performing for over two decades at St. Nick’s Pub, Minton’s, Lenox Lounge, and Smoke. Quartet members (Marcus PersianiDavid F. Gibson, and the bass chair rotates) keep the Harlem jam-session tradition alive and have laid down the musical foundation for the likes of Stevie Wonder, Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and Bono.
Firey String Sistas! has had several different configurations, including string quartet with harp and percussion. Firey String Sistas! is a highly intuitive and energetic ensemble that provides a refreshing alternative to the standard jazz band. Since 2011, the ensemble has been committed to pushing the limits of string, ensemble playing, and improvisation to the next level. Founder and cellist Nioka Workman is joined by stellar artists that include bassist Melissa Slocum and vocalist/pianist Mala Waldron. Firey String Sistas! presents compelling performances that incorporate aspects of women’s culture, original compositions, American songbook standards, world music, and jazz. They develop their unique approach to music collaboratively, as a group. In their third year, they produced a CD, “That’s What She Said.”

Soul Understated is led by vocalist Mavis ’SWAN’ Poole (Lauryn Hill, Prince) whose distinctive vocal sound recalls Erykah Badu and Esther Phillips; and Jeremy ‘BEAN’ Clemons(who has performed with Gregory Porter, Burning Spear, Jennifer Holliday, and more). Soul Understated delivers a beautifully performed organic sound with stellar musicianship.

Their sound includes elements of Earth, Wind, and Fire; Ella Fitzgerald; Donny Hathaway; Curtis Mayfield; Sarah Vaughn; and Count Basie. Soul Understated’s Hip-hop infused music spans all genres.

They’ve appeared at major venues, such as the Blue Note Jazz Fest, the Brooklyn Hip Hop Fest, the Toronto Jazz Festival, and the Capital Jazz Super Cruise. Swan appeared in the HBO series, Vinyl

LaShawn Harris is a native New Yorker. She is an associate professor of History at Michigan State University and Assistant Editor for The Journal of African American History. Her area of expertise includes twentieth century United States and African American histories. Dr. Harris’s scholarly articles have appeared in The Journal of African American History, Journal of Social History, Journal of Urban History, and theJournal for the Study of Radicalism. Her first monograph Sex Workers, Psychics, and Numbers Runners: Black Women in New York City’s Underground Economy, whichexplores how a diverse group of African American women carved out unique niches for themselves within New York City’s expansive underground economy. In 2017, Sex Workers, Psychics, and Numbers Runnerswon the Organization of American Historians’ Darlene Clark Hine Book Award for the best book in African American women’s history, and the Philip Taft Labor Prize in Labor and Working-Class History for the best book in labor history.

Her recent publication, which appears in SOULS: A Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture and Society, examines the less familiar life of 1984 police shooting victim and Bronx resident Eleanor Bumpurs.

Novella Ford is the manager of public programs at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. She is committed to advancing knowledge of the global black experience through programs and exhibitions. She also possesses more than ten years of experience managing and leading diverse fundraising campaigns ranging from $500K to $10M for noteworthy institutions and events with a focus on giving through corporations, foundations, and individuals. Program areas include the performing arts, law, communications, education, entrepreneurship, employment, college readiness, STEM education, and foster care. NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band Pays Tribute to Nat King Cole and Art Blakey with a Free Concert in Jersey City

Featuring conductor Dick Lowenthal and special guests Wynton Marsalis,

Allan Harris, and Antoinette Montague

shem.gif

Jersey City, NJ (August 23, 2019) — The New Jersey City University Center for the Arts presents the 7th Annual NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band Concert on Friday, September 6 at 6 p.m. on the J. Owen Grundy Pier, Exchange Place, in Jersey City. Conducted by Professor Emeritus Richard Lowenthal, this free concert features trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and vocalists Allan Harris and Antoinette Montague.

The concert pays tribute to the 100th birthdays of Nat King Cole and Art Blakey. Cole, who died at the age of 45, began his music career as a jazz pianist but went on to become one of the most popular jazz and pop singers of all time. Drummer Art Blakey enjoyed more than 60 years as a jazz musician, leading the iconic Jazz Messengers and being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame, and the DownBeat Hall of Fame.

The Alumni Big Band concert began in 2013 at the request of NJCU President Sue Henderson, a jazz enthusiast who was being inaugurated as the first woman president of the University, which was founded in 1927 as a teacher-training college. President Henderson asked Professor Richard Lowenthal of the NJCU Music Department to produce a jazz concert as part of the inauguration festivities and Lowenthal put out a call to alumni of the program who were active in the music business.

The first concert included many of the top big band players in the country with Lowenthal’s good friend and jazz trumpet player, conductor and composer Jon Faddis making a special guest appearance. The program was so well-received and attended that Henderson decided to make it an annual event with Lowenthal co-producing the concert with Don Jay Smith.

This year’s special guests include one of the most famous names in jazz, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, who joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in 1980. An internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader and educator, Wynton has won nine Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Arts, the National Humanities Medal, plus numerous other awards and accolades. He expressed a delight to be able to pay homage to Art Blakey.

The salute to Nat King Cole features the Harlem-based vocalist Allan Harris, whom the Wall Street Journal called “the most exciting young male singer on the scene.” Since launching his career some two decades ago, Alan has won numerous awards, including the DownBeat Critics Award, two Hot House Jazz Magazine Awards, the Backstage Bistro Award and several others. Critics have compared him to Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and, of course, Nat King Cole. Allan will be joined for duets featuring a New Jersey favorite, Antoinette Montague, who will reprise the Grammy Award-winning performance of Natalie Cole singing “Unforgettable.”

“Every year, we invite special guest artists to join our all-star alumni big band,” said Lowenthal, who retired from NJCU in 2017, “and we have been fortunate to have some greats including Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Cyrille Aimee, Paquito D’Rivera and Lou Marini.”

As is the case every year, the all-star big band includes accomplished musicians who studied at the school as far back as the 1960s when Lowenthal started the jazz program.  The band members are drummer Rich DeRosa; sax players Mark Friedman, Bob Magnusson, Dave Noland, Dustyn Richardson and John DiSanto; trumpeters Alex Norris, Nate Eklund and Vinnie Cutro; trombonists Rob Edwards, Mike Modero and Conrad Zulauf; and faculty member Garry Dial on piano. The big band will also feature three students: bassist John Benitez, trombonist Juanga Lakunza and trumpeter Alejandro Pizarro-Leon.

The sponsors of this free concert include the NJCU Foundation, Arch Insurance, Claremont Companies, Hampshire Companies, Inserra Supermarkets, NJTV, RBC Capital Markets, the Gia Maione Prima Foundation, NJM Insurance Group, Del-Sano Contracting, the Hudson County Office of Culture and Tourism, Dresdner Robin, the City of Jersey City, Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs, Mack-Cali, Jersey City Medical Center, The PRC Group, Hyatt Regency Jersey City, Hyatt House,  New Jersey Broadcasters Association, Hot House Jazz Guide, New Jersey Jazz Society, Exchange Place Alliance and WBGO.

The NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band Concert is free and takes place on the J. Owen Grundy Pier at Exchange Place in Jersey City on Friday, September 6 at 6 p.m. Food trucks will be on site and seating is on a first-come, first served basis. If it rains, the concert will be held in the Harborside Atrium, Harborside 2 and 3 at 34 Exchange Place. The J. Owen Grundy Pier is located near public transportation and there are numerous parking lots in the area.
