Award winning jazz soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom returns to St. Paul’s German Lutheran Church to present the second of a series of special all-acoustic concerts in the resonant space renown for its extraordinary acoustics. Bloom will be joined by long-time bandmates pianist Dominic Fallacaro and bassist Mark Helias. They will perform original compositions and American songbook ballads specially selected for performance in the unique acoustic environment of the church.

Jane Ira Bloom has been steadfastly developing her singular voice on the soprano sax for 40 years creating a body of music that marks her as an American original. Winner of the Guggenheim Fellowship, the 2019 Downbeat International Critics & Jazz Journalists Association Award for soprano saxophone, and the Charlie Parker Fellowship for jazz innovation. A former NASA artist, she has an asteroid named in her honor by the International Astronomical Union (asteroid: 6083janeirabloom). Her trio Cd “Early Americans” featuring Mark Helias and drummer Bobby Previte won a 2018 Grammy for Best Surround Sound Album and all her all-ballads release “Sixteen Sunsets” featuring pianist Dominic Fallacaro was cited as one of the top ten releases by NPR. Don’t miss these extraordinary musicians for this special one-time event.

Award winning soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom brings her Early Americans Trio with long-time bandmates Bobby Previte and Mark Helias to the Avalon Lounge for the first time. With over 50 years of shared musical history together this trio has something special to say. “Playing in threes” has always held a special fascination for jazz improvisers. It holds out the possibility that something can always be slightly off balance and that’s just what fires the imagination of players like these. The trio’s Early Americans release won the 2018 Grammy award for best surround sound album. Bloom’s been leading bands into new creative territory for over 40 years bringing her lyrical and provocative music to venues as diverse as the Kennedy Center and the National Air & Space Museum’s Einstein Planetarium.  Helias and Previte, mature composer/ bandleaders in their own right with years of recording and live performance experience add depth and resonance to every spontaneous choice they make. Don’t miss these fearless American originals for an evening of high wire improvisation over the groove.

“This is what a jazz Christmas should be.”
Mark Gilbert, Jazz Journal

“From subtle to sexy to swinging, Chris Pasin and friends shine a brilliant light on the best yuletide favorites.”
Jazz Global Beat

“The trumpeter and several collaborators, including pianist Armen Donelian, toggle between calm introspection and swinging heat as required for their treatments of the usual carols and secular songs.”

Frank John Hadley, Downbeat

“Baby It’s Cold Outside… is a shiny silver Christmas ornament, and a fine jazz album too. Dalton and Pasin make the title track into a dialogue rather than a song, like a snowbound Nichols and May.”
Michael Eck, Chronogram

“It’s been a while since I gave trumpeter/flugelhorn player Chris my “PICK” in issue # 158, and now he’s put together a seasonal album that stands out nicely as one of the most cheerful I’ve heard in many years (for those who have been reading us for a while, you’ll know already that I seldom review holiday albums). …. the title track, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside“,…that’s more than enough to let you know how HIP this coming holiday season is going to be… some great dialogue between Chris and vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell that will put you in the mood for the festivities!”
Rotcod Zzaj

“Here’s a holiday outing that should satisfy traditionalists and adventurous spirits alike, a true rarity… the scintillating Baby It’s Cold Outside.”
David McGee, Deep Roots

“Baby It’s Cold Outside (Planet Arts – 301714) is a delightful Christmas album from trumpeter CHRIS PASIN. Pasin has enlisted a terrific group of musicians including pianist Armen Donelian, bassist Ira Coleman, drummer Jeff Siegel, bassist Rich Syracuse, guitarist Peter Einhorn and vocalist / producer Patricia Dalton Fennell, mixed them into a variety of combinations, and they have produced an eclectic 11-song program that holds your interest no matter the combination of players.”
Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz

“The highlight for me is the title cut, which has been turned into a two-way conversation between Patricia and Chris — I have heard many different versions of this song over the years, but this has to be the only one that oozes sex. Patricia often proves her vocal skills on other numbers, but here her spoken voice is like warm velvet and combined with the muted trumpet in the background and the laid-back feel of the arrangement makes this something quite extraordinary. Overall this is a beautifully conceived and performed album that is easy to listen to and totally enjoyable from start to end.”
Gonzo Weekly

“Nothing gets music lovers in a celebrating mood like listening to their favorite carols, and this CD, Baby, It’s Cold Outside, delivers a whopping dose of holiday cheer. On 11 of the most-beloved sounds of the season, trumpeter Chris Pasin and friends show they have a real gift for making such familiar material their own, while maintaining the spirit and warmth that’s such a major part of the yuletide celebrations.”
Republic of Jazz

“Perhaps the most notable is the title track, a vocal duet between Pasin and Fennell where the traditional roles are reversed. They turn the lyrics into an overlapping conversation, and Fennell plays the seductress with elan.”
Thomas Cunniffe, JazzHistoryOnline

Matthew Snow’s Debut Recording Iridescence Introduces An Important Young Jazz Bassist And Composer

shem.gif

MATTHEW SNOW “IRIDESCENCE”

Release Date: NOVEMBER 29, 2019

UPC Code: 888295937962

Track listing

1. AMBER GLOW

2. BLITZ

3. THE EXIT STRATEGY

4. BROOD

5. JEALOUSY

6. BOUYANTLY BLISS

7. THE CHANGE AGENT

8. VENUS

Musicians: Matthew Snow – Bass/Composer,

David Gibson – Trombone, Clay Lyons – Alto Saxophone, Joe Doubleday – Vibraphone, Daisuke Abe – Guitar, Wayne Smith – Drums

A talented young bassist and composer who is based in New York, Matthew Snow debuts both his inventive jazz sextet and eight of his original songs on Iridescence. On a set of new material that ranges from cooking hard bop to moody ballads, Snow features a combo filled with up-and-coming talents. The bassist is joined by the relaxed yet fluent trombonist David Gibson, altoist Clay Lyons (who has a joyous style a bit reminiscent at times of Cannonball Adderley), vibraphonist Joe Doubleday, guitarist Daisuke Abe, and the quietly tasteful drummer Wayne Smith. The unusual instrumentation (a hard bop group without trumpet, tenor or piano) and the original melodies and chord changes give listeners a fresh spin on the straight ahead jazz tradition.

While Snow is an impressive bassist, he resides himself to a supportive role on Iridescence, just taking a brief solo on “Bouyantly Bliss” and instead putting the emphasis on his warm melodies and the creative playing of his sidemen.

The attractive group sound and its beautiful harmonies (with a memorable blend by alto and trombone) is very much in evidence on the opening “Amber Glow.” “Blitz” and “The Change Agent” give the musicians opportunities to make statements on uptempo pieces while “Jealousy” (which concludes with a surprising high-note trombone cadenza) is a bit funky. Trombonist Gibson is particularly well featured on the moody ballad “Brood” and the introspective closer “Venus.” Other Snow pieces include a swinging “The Exit Strategy” and the nostalgic “Bouyantly Bliss.” It would not be surprising if several of these pieces became standards in the future.

Matthew Snow, who has been an increasingly significant part of the New York jazz scene for the past seven years, seems destined to become as well-known as a composer as he is a bassist. Iridescence is an important step forward in his career and will delight fans of modern straight ahead jazz.

One of the few female jazz instrumentalists to front her own band, Winds of Change, the saxophonist, composer, vocalist and educator’s comeback album in 2016, “Here We Go Again” has garnered complimentary reviews. The single “Vertical Alignment” released the beginning of 2019, made the Smooth Jazz Network Charts multiple weeks. This new CD Vertical Alignment, which features original materials and multiple talented musicians, is making great impressions, getting much praise with musicians, and creating a buzz in the music business. It hits the depth of your soul. There is no holding back or compromise of interpretation or expression. Fostina’s unique improvisational style shows her experience in playing all genres of music. Her producers Al Turner and Ray Chew add even more flare to these original compositions. After a storied early career that included playing alongside such Jazz greats as Abbey Lincoln, Melba Liston, Frank Foster, James “Blood” Ulmer, Tom Browne, Roy Ayers, and playing in the Gerald Wilson Big Band, touring with Marvin Gaye, and many other experiences too vast to mention, Fostina has made significant contributions to the arts and education scenes. Fostina received a Christi Award for her contributions to promoting the arts in the community, an Outstanding Arts Educator award from the Delaware Board of Education, and an Outstanding Contributor award from the Council of Jazz Advocates for her work as an arts educator, and is the Founder and longtime Executive Director of the Wilmington Youth Jazz Band.

It’s my honor to represent Fostina on this CD. She should take her place among jazz superstars. Love the sax interplay on the two vocals, “Best Is Yet To Come,” and “I’ll Always Remember.” Reminds me of the great jazz legend Grover Washington Jr.

ORIGINAL VINYL RECORDS CELEBRATES ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY

The notable Hudson Valley record store has made giant strides during its first year.

A year ago Jim Eigo, a super publicist who runs Jazz Promo Services, started Original Vinyl Records along with his wife Pam Eigo. “I’m an old record store lover who goes all the way back to the late 1960s/early ‘70s, working in retail. I love being around records, talking about records, and meeting people who love records.”

Eigo’s years of experience have resulted in his store having a warm and friendly atmosphere, a very wide selection of recordings, and a stock that features used and new Lps, CDs, 45s, 78s, DVDs, cassettes and even 8-tracks plus posters and memorabilia.

Original Vinyl Records (whose motto is “Where Old Records Go To Live”) is located at 314 State Route 94 South #7, Warwick Crossing, Warwick, NY 10990-3380. It is open fulltime on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday while, on other days, it is open by appointment only. “If a dealer or a collector calls me for the other days and wants to spend time looking through the collection, we can work it out,” says Eigo.

The birth of the store occurred when Jim Eigo’s son graduated from college and Jim’s wife Pam said that he could stay in an office that was overflowing with Jim’s records, posters and memorabilia. “I needed somewhere to put them, which led me to thinking of starting my own record store in the Hudson Valley. Right up the road was a little strip mall that had a store for rent. My wife thought that I was crazy but she had told me to put the records somewhere!”

Jim Eigo has had many years of experience with record stores including a long association with Happy Tunes Records where he ran the jazz department, had important positions at the Soho Music Gallery and J&R Music World, and co-founded the successful mail order business Daybreak Express. An enthusiastic supporter of all styles of jazz and music in general, Eigo was one of the early innovators in utilizing E-mails for marketing and has worked with a countless number of musicians, clubs and labels during his 20 years of running Jazz Promo Services.

He is quite enthusiastic about Original Vinyl Records. “We are building up our reputation and people are finding out about the store, which also sells recordings through mail order. Last spring we hosted a special series, Talking Vinyl, that featured such notables as Scott Wentzel from Mosaic Records, Tito Puente’s biographer (Joe Conte) and Arnold Jay Smith giving informative talks about their experiences. It was all filmed and can be seen on our You Tube channel. We hope to have more special events in the future. The record store is a lot of work but it’s also a lot of fun and customers enjoy the wide variety of music we sell, the prices, and the atmosphere.”

GARY LUCAS NEWS AND UPCOMING SHOWS IN FRANCE, BELGIUM, NETHERLANDS AND ITALY

shem.gif

GARY LUCAS just returned from well-received shows in Canada and Mexico, beginning in Vancouver British Columbia at the Chutzpah! Festival, where he performed his solo live soundtrack accompanying James Whale’s 1931 horror classic “Frankenstein” the night before Halloween.

Interview with Gary Lucas in Vancouver’s Georgia Straight:

While in Vancouver he hung out with his old friend comedian / actor Sandra Bernhard, who performed Gary’s song “Follow” with Gary sitting in with her band several years ago at a large rally in support of Gay Marriage Rights at NYC’s Crobar.

Lucas then traveled to Mexico for successful shows in Mexico City and Cuernavaca Mexico performing his live solo score accompanying the 1931 Spanish-language “Dracula”. His Dracula shows were a Pick in Mexico’s national newspaper La Jornada:

And he was interviewed in Mexican cultural magazine La Juguete-Rabioso:

Gary’s show in Cuernavaca at the Teopanzolco Cultural Center also earned a rave review in El Sol de Cuernavaca newspaper:

While in Mexico, Gary agave a free concert for disadvantaged Mexican children by invitation of the US Embassy at the Biblioteca Benjamin Franklin—his 7th time performing there.

Next up,  Lucas embarks on a European tour which takes him to France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy from Thanksgiving till New Year’s Eve.

His latest album,  a collaboration with Italian singer The Niro entitled “THE COMPLETE JEFF BUCKLY AND GARY LUCAS SONGBOOK”,

marking the 25th anniversary of Jeff Buckley’s iconic “Grace” album, is receiving rave reviews in Europe and was just released in the US by Italian label Esordisco.

Minton’s presents
Andy Bey, JC Hopkins Biggish Band, Jason Marshall Big Band

shem.gif
Grammy honored JC Hopkins and his Biggish Band will be playing musical host at the legendary Minton’s Playhouse for ringing in the New Year and no better place to do it than at the birthplace of bebop. The Biggish Band has backed a number of musical legends in its time including Norah Jones, Elvis Costello, Tony Bennett, Jazzmeia Horn and Jon Hendricks to name a few. The band’s newest crop of stellar talent include Joy Hanson who has a voice that reminds one of a young Ella Fitzgerald, Vanisha-Arleen Gould whose soulful sound has drawn comparisons to Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse and Shawn Whitehorn who has a gorgeous baritone voice and immaculate stage presence. The very special guest sharing the stage with the band that night is none other than Dap-King Binky Griptite. Binky has been a mainstay for the legendary band the Dap-Kings and has backed such greats as Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones. Binky has a soulful sound on both voice and guitar and can get any room of folks moving and groovin’. An altogether fantastic night for creating memories to last the whole year.

Every Saturday Night at the Legendary Minton’s Playhouse –  JC Hopkins Biggish Band: Jazz and Comedy, Fridays Jazz-Star Series and Big Band Sundays

Grammy nominated band leader JC Hopkins has resumed the programming for the most legendary supper club in the history of jazz: Minton’s Playhouse- Harlem birthplace of bebop. Hopkins’ Biggish Band is at the nucleus of the programming with a weekly Saturday residency that features a ten piece band and an array of stunning up and coming vocalists including Vanisha-Arleen Gould, Joy Hanson, Shawn Whitehorn and Nico Sarbanes. The Biggish Band, whose sound merges Mingus with Billy May, has been fertile ground for great talent such as the likes of Norah Jones, Jazzmeia Horn, Madeleine Peyroux and Brianna Thomas who all have been featured with regularity in the group.

Jason Marshall Big Band

Jason Marshall is a highly sought after and established fixture on the global music landscape. His work for large ensemble can be heard most regularly performed by his critically acclaimed orchestra, the Jason Marshall Big Band.   A rare specimen even among the highly competitive New York City music scene, the Washington D.C. born saxophonist can be seen playing soul music with Aretha Franklin, Latin jazz with Arturo O’Farrill, pop with Desi Di Lauro, avant garde jazz with the Charlie Mingus Big Band, and rock music with the Young Presidents. Also a highly sought after composer and arranger, Mr. Marshall wrote and arranged the modern day classic “Miss Garvey, Miss Garvey!!” which was nominated for a Grammy in 2009.  He has also written and arranged music for the Taipei Jazz Orchestra and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

J. C. Hopkins Biggish Band (Friday and Saturday) Led by the bandleader, songwriter and producer for which it’s named, the J.C. Hopkins Biggish Band has always been a friend to vocalists, and in this engagement, the group pays a centenary tribute to Billie Holiday. Among the many singers assembled are Brianna Thomas, Charenee Wade, Charles Turner and Jazzmeia Horn. From 6 to 11 p.m., Minton’s, 206 West 118th Street, Harlem,212-243-2222, mintonsharlem.com. ESQUIRE MAGAZINE

At Minton’s, you’re part of the choir. There’s this part in “Moanin'” where—not in the original version but in this one, arranged by JC Hopkins and which his band, JC Hopkins’ Biggish Band, plays—the horn section shouts out, call-and-response style. This night, we get in on it, too. Bum be de BOMP. HEY! Be dop bop be da BOMP. HEY! Bum be de BOMP. HEY! And it’s not anger any longer, but joy.

One of the most engaging vocalists around….always in evidence a strong jazz influence in his vocalizing and choice of material.
Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz

Connects emotionally with a song’s sentiments and actions. One jazz singer for whom words aren’t just syllables on which to hang notes….they’re the very center of the song.
Mark Dundas Wood, Bistro Awards.Com

Cassara…gives a song a unique distinctive flavor all its own… incredibly intimate.

International Women in Jazz
Go Fund Me Campaign

shem.gif
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN JAZZ, INC. (IWJ) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to supporting women jazz artists and related professionals by increasing awareness of the diverse contributions women make to jazz worldwide. Through our programs, IWJ provides opportunities for emerging and experienced talent to be recognized by their peers, the public and larger jazz community. Our member network creates a forum to share and learn from one another, promote one’s work and receive timely information and assistance. We are a unique organization with a profound history of event-driven recognition activities positively impacting the jazz community’s young and old. We stand dedicated to actively ensuring a place for women as a vital part of jazz’s past, present and future. To learn more about IWJ’s history, please visit our website: www.internationalwomeninjazz.org and click on the tab About IWJ.

Why are we asking for your help? This year our preeminent Annual IWJ Festival was sidelined for the first time due to escalating costs and a decline in funding from limited grant offerings and corporate sponsorships. Facing shrinking financial resources, it was not possible for us to deliver this signature annual event. In 2018, our total revenue for this wonderful event dropped by 60% from the previous year, primarily due to external funding resources. Therefore, we are setting a 2020 Annual Festival fundraising goal of $10,000.

Why is the IWJ Festival annual event so important? Every year our intergenerational audience continues to increase as we recognize, honor and celebrate one or more women who have made a significant contribution to the jazz community. Our headliners, member musician and youth performances illustrate the powerful connection between our wonderful jazz legacy and those who continue to innovate and carry it forward. Our event includes jam sessions, table talks, networking, educational components and seminars, and vendor representation. Our Annual Festival is more than an event…it is an inspiring experience for our wonderfully talented, aspiring female artists and Youth in Action participants, for those on stage and in the audience!

Here are just some examples of our past youth award recipients:
• Leonieke Scheuble, dedicated her CD titled “Debut” to IWJ by acknowledging her achievement as the 2013 International Women in Jazz Youth in Action Award Winner. Today, Leonieke is leading her own band.
• Wé McDonald, our 2016 Youth in Action award winner went on to win second runner up on the 11th season of The Voice.
• Camille Thurman, our 2009 Youth in Jazz award winner, is known today as a composer, instrumentalist, vocalist and interpreter of the jazz tradition; and,
• Charenee Wade – singer, composer, arranger and educator – and winner of the 1st IWJ Youth-in-Jazz Award returned twenty years later to headline our 2018 Festival.

Please see our Galleries page at www.internationalwomeninjazz.org

Our annual festival has been one of our core membership offerings. It allows us to bring jazz music to the community – young and old – on the largest scale possible. Imagine the sadness and disbelief our members and supporters experienced when hearing our major performance platform had been sidelined.

Will this impact the future of IWJ? We want you to know that although we are facing some current financial headwinds our spirit is alive and well. To keep us current and in the mix, we have been utilizing our funds for smaller scale events at local community venues that feature open mic sessions creating opportunities for our members, supporters and the general public. We continue to disseminate information and promote our member’s events and achievements through direct email and our social media sites. We rely on the generous help of volunteers to enhance our website, social media and other services as we better identify the needs and interests of our members. And we continue to explore additional financial resources as they become available to fund our existing offerings and create new possibilities.

Why your contribution is so important? We need to continue to support, educate and nurture our young artists and offer jazz appreciation for all ages as part of our mission and tradition. The IWJ Festival epitomizes the heart and soul of our existence. Our love for jazz and commitment to its future is profound – that is why we are appealing to you for your contributions. We cannot just rely on the revenue we receive from membership dues, local events and limited grant monies alone.

Our appeal is to our membership and supporters, domestic and international musicians, youth jazz students, composers, and jazz enthusiasts…music schools, educators, foundations, music venues, record labels, recording industry artists, broadcast professionals, business owners, music management professionals, other like organizations and individuals just like you.

Please help us bring back our Annual International Women in Jazz Festival for Jazz Appreciation Month, April 2020. IWJ is planning now to secure venues, musicians, etc. to continue our efforts to showcase Jazz as an American art form, and to honor, recognize and support women artists who keep it legendary and current. On behalf of our dedicated members, board of directors and as president of IWJ, thank you in advance for your tax-deductible contribution in any amount. Let’s continue the music together!

The Billie Holiday Project evokes the electric and intimate feeling of experiencing Lady Day live in a 1930s Jazz Club. Drawing from some of Billie’s most recorded tunes, such as Blue Moon, Billie’s Blues, God Bless the Child, and Strange Fruit, to name but a few, the band also revives some of the earlier and lesser-known tunes that Billie interpreted.

In performance, interspersed with the music are stories of Billie’s life and musical artistry. Shrouded in mystery, as she was draped in furs, Billie was quintessentially multi-faceted, possessing the sensitivity and ability to make the songs she sang as personal as if she was singing them softly in your own very ear.

In town from San Francisco for one weekend only, the band features: Stella Heath on vocals, Neil Fontano on piano, Michael Fortunato on tenor sax and clarinet, Trevor Kinsel on upright bass and cornet, and guest drummers Rob Garcia and Raphael Pannier.

The late fall months may bring early dark nights, but all the more reason to lighten up a Friday evening with great swingin’ jazz. Five Play, the quintet of DIVA Jazz, surely fits that description with its roots in the jazz tradition and inspired by the members’ collective, creative vision to swing through the twenty-first century. Women in jazz are usually associated with vocal music. However, the five women of Five Play are instrumentalists ~ creative, unique, and masterful.

The date is November 22, 2019. The 7:30pm start-time of the concert has Five Play performing in the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall complete with the newly crafted stage laid by hand by the highly skilled technical director of the college, Peter Galipeau.

The quintet’s repertoire is comprised of innovative arrangements of classic and contemporary standards. In addition, band members compose, arrange, and play their own original music.  This full library of powerful ensemble pieces highlights the distinctive, unique styles of each individual musician.
Crescendo and Jazz Music journal describes the ensemble, “Five Play is a unit of brilliance; neatness personified – it swings, it entertains, it sounds happy and is surely a pleasure of perfect unisons, dynamic tuttis, stirring up a sense of excitement which never pales for one instant.”

Leader and drummer Sherrie Maricle is the music director. And the diverse sounds of the group are provided by Tomoko Ohno, piano; Amy Shook, bass; Jami Dauber, trumpet; and Leigh Pilzer, baritone and soprano sax/clarinet.

Admission is $10 for everyone except all students are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased the evening of the concert at the box office which opens at 6:15pm, or online anytime with  a $2.50 service charge per ticket at www.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ticketing.shtml

Also, earlier in the day, starting at 11am in Orange Hall room 23, the ensemble will present a master class entitled  Creating a Life and Living in Music.  The session is free and open to the public.  The musicians will explaintheir choices of instruments and demonstrate them as well as their own style of time management in which they fit practicing, touring, composing, arranging, teaching, and, of course, performing into well-tuned  (pun intended) schedules. Q & A is a welcome segment of this informative class intertwined with personal advice, shared experiences, laughter and fun.

Orange Hall is located at the corner of Wawayanda and Grandview Avenues (GPS: 24 Grandview Avenue), Middletown, NY.

Fred Hersch Trio featuring Drew Gress & Billy Hart

FRI & SAT • NOV 22 & 23
7 & 9:30 PM

“Across more than 40 albums,” The Irish Examiner recently raved about Fred Hersch, “the New York-based piano player has created a body of work that connects with the likes of Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and Ornette Coleman, but without ever sounding tired or nostalgic.” Truly one of the greats in contemporary jazz, Hersch brings his lyrical, gentle, and always gorgeous approach to Tarrytown with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Billy Hart.

–>

Noah Haidu Trio featuring Buster Williams & Billy Hart

SUN • NOV 24
4 & 6 PM

Hailed as one of the most confident and impressive of the new pianists — All About Jazz said “the cat can play his butt off” – Brooklyn based Noah Haidu was named a ‘Rising Star’ by both Downbeat Magazine and JazzTimes while Downbeat called his album Infinite Distances one of 2017’s best records. Two top-notch players join Noah on his innovative compositions and improvisations, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Hart.

Next Weekend: Nov 29 – Dec 1

Vic Juris & Kate Baker Quintet

FRI & SAT • NOV 29 & 30
7 & 9:30 PM

Guitarist Vic Juris has played just about everywhere, in every conceivable format with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Phil Woods, Jimmy Smith and Richie Cole and accompanied Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Eddie Jefferson and Nancy Wilson. He arrives in Tarrytown with another great singer – his wife Kate Baker, who the LA Times called “one of the most impressive performers to come along in years.”  Vic Juris & Katie Baker Quintet featuring Todd Coolman, bass, Adam Nussbaum, drums plus special guest Rachel Z, piano.

<!–

–>

Willie Martinez Latin Jazz Quartet

SUN • DEC 1
4 & 6 PM

A veteran of over three decades on the New York scene, the music of Brooklyn-born drummer and vocalist Willie Martinez is an exciting example of how the marriage of Afro-Caribbean sound – its rhythm and harmonic structure — with improvisational nature of jazz keeps things fresh, exhilarating and timeless. Joining Martinez will be Nicki Denner on piano/vocals, Bernie Minoso on bass and Anton Denner on reeds and flute.

Following Weekend: Dec 6 – 8

Paquito D’Rivera Quintet

FRI & SAT • DEC 6 & 7
7 & 9:30 PM

Saxophonist/Clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera is an international treasure: A star since childhood, a featured soloist at 17 with Cuba’s National Symphony, founding member of the legendary Afro-Cuban jazz fusion group Irakere and Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, over 30 albums, 14 Grammys, an NEA Jazz Master, a Kennedy Center Legend…the list is endless. With trumpeter/flugelhornist Diego Urcola, pianist Alex Brown, bassist Hamish Smith and drummer Eric Doob, Paquito he’ll make more history in Tarrytown.

<!–

–>

Shunzo Ohno Group featuring Lotus Chamber Collective

SUN • DEC 8
4 & 6 PM

“Extraordinary” best describes Shunzo Ohno. Considered Japan’s greatest trumpeter while still a teenager, recruited to Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1974, his rise to jazz’s pinnacle — Grammy-winning recordings and international awards – came while overcoming cancer and a serious car accident. Incorporating traditional jazz, hip hop, and Japanese melodies in his music, he creates a tapestry that is distinctly Shunzo Ohno to inspire and unite audiences globally.

Akiko Tsuruga   Organist   Check out a few minutes of Akiko  She’s “Sweet and Funky,” she’s “Cute and Bad”, Composer,  A Performer extraordinaire. The legendary Dr. Lonnie Smith describes her this way: “Akiko’s playing is like watching a flower blooming, a bird spreading her wings in the music world. Akiko is here to stay.” Raised in Osaka, Japan, this talented musician began studying the organ at the age of three, at the famed Yamaha Music School. After discovering her passion for jazz very early on in her musical journey, Akiko launched her career immediately after graduating from the Osaka College of Music. While living and playing in Osaka, she had many opportunities to perform with world- renowned jazz musicians from the United States. Meeting Grady Tate, in particular, was a life-changing event for Akiko.

After landing in the mecca for jazz, New York City, it didn’t take long for Akiko to make her mark – It was during these early years that she had the great pleasure of sitting in, playing gigs, and eventually recording with jazz greats such as Frank Wess, Jimmy Cobb, Grady Tate and other top NY musicians. Her reputation ultimately drew attention of Lou Donaldson as he chose her in 2006 as his quartet’s organist.

But it was the meeting of organ legend Dr. Lonnie Smith that proved to have the greatest impact on Akiko’s musical development and career. He became an important mentor to Akiko, and she considers him her greatest influence. She flourished and continued to be a constant draw on the NY jazz scene.

Akiko has ten albums as a leader to her credit. Her debut album in the U.S., “Sweet and Funky” ,was selected as a “Best album of 2007” in DOWNBEAT Magazine. Akiko has been a regular in the DOWNBEAT polls since 2008 – culminating this year with the 65th Annual Critics Poll, coming in at #2 in the “Rising Star – Organ” category. Hot House Magazine has just named her ‘Best Organ” in the 2017 Readers Poll. Her albums have constantly placed in the top ten on the National Radio Jazz Chart.

Just a few of her performances include: Monterey Jazz Festival, Stanford Jazz Festival, Newport Beach Jazz Party, (CA) Atlanta Jazz Festival (Georgia) JVC Jazz Festival, Rochester Jazz Festival, Pine Grill Jazz Reunion Jazz Festival (New York) Portland Jazz Festival (Oregon) Vail Jazz Festival (Colorado), Tri-C Jazz Festival (Ohio).

Alvester Garnett – Drummer – Check Out Some Of Alvester’s Licks Alvester Garnett is an American jazz drummer who, among many other productions, has appeared on Great Performances on PBS in a tribute to Kurt Weill. Garnett has played with Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter, Regina Carter, Clark Terry, Pharoah Sanders, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Teddy Edwards, James Carter, Cyrus Chestnut, Charenee Wade, Lou Donaldson, Benny Golson, Al Grey, Rodney Jones, and Sherman Irby, among others.

Greg Lewis – Organ
Kahlil Kwame Bell – Drums
Beverly Crosby – Vocal

Time: 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Here’s What The Press Is Saying About Ray Blue’s New CD “Work”

“Ray Blue is a tenor saxophonist with a big tone with a pleasant-sounding and satisfying approach to the music he plays…”

Peter Giroux – Audioaudition

“The tenor-saxophonist Ray Blue breathes energy and optimism on the cover song of

his new album, entitled Work. The most curious thing is that his music leaves the same

impression.”

Leonid Auskern – Jazzquad Russia

There’s nothing quite like the comforting warmth of tenor saxophone front and

center…Ray Blue’s fluid, lyrical style is technically solid… The exquisite, evocative melodies

are delivered with convincing feeling and emotion

Joe Ross – Roots Music Report

“RAY BLUE: Leading with a deep, full tone, this sax man keeps it light and bouncy… Killer stuff that’s just so much fun…he puts his sure fingered stamp on it.”

Chris Spector – Midwest Record

“Hip to the max tenor sax Ray Blue – WORK: Ray’s playing is the ultimate in hip to the max tenor sax…”

Rotcod Zzaj – Contemporary Fusion Review

“…guided by the warm sound of the leader’s tenor sax…a follower of tradition that

exudes swing from every note, able to invent melodies as well as colleagues from the

past, to create stories that are always different, full of fantasy.

Vittorio Lo Conte – Music Zoom, Italy

“The songs on “Work” demonstrate an enthusiasm for old-school jazz and a swinging style. Blue’s approach finds him making his tenor sax sound like a baritone, and creating soundscapes that erase the present day, and transport listeners back in time through sound. Blue’s saxophone takes on the lyrical line, but the effect is smooth not just bleating notes per word…there is an art to the interpretation…Together, the musicians bring to life the approaches to jazz that have not been heard in decades and are a must-hear for new and veteran jazz fans.”

Dodie Miller-Gould – Napcloud Review

Tenor saxophonist Ray Blue owns a deep tone and melodic style that makes this recording a smooth and inviting experience with his quietly creative music. This is a selection of songs performed with sensitivity and creativity – a very fine jazz collection.

Grady Harp – Amazon Review

“A soulful performance with varied repertoire, Ray Blue’s “Work” offers novel arrangements and creative musical expression.”

Joe Ross – Roots Music Report

The New York based tenor saxophonist Ray Blue, who has a deep tone and a melodic style, is featured on WORK, a set of accessible yet quietly creative music. The program mixes together three of his originals with surprising versions of standards and lesser known but superior jazz songs. He and Randy Klein, head of Jazzheads Music Group, worked diligently to achieve the appealing Old School feel and sound that Blue’s listeners want to hear.

Blue teams up with three pianists (Sharp Radway, Kirk Lightsey and Benito Gonzalez), guitarist Jeff Barone, bassist Essiet Okon Essiet, drummer Steve Johns and, on three songs apiece, the rambunctious trombonist Ron Wilkins and percussionist Neil Clark. Starting with the exuberant “Work,” the program includes such surprises as an uptempo transformation of “Lift Every Voice And Sing,” two versions of “That’s All” (including a duet with pianist Lightsey), a playful rendition of “Don’t Know Why,” and a cooking “Everything Happens To Me” which is normally taken as a slow ballad. Blue, displaying a large tone that almost sounds like a baritone in spots, is heard at his best on his original ballad “My Friend And I Took A Walk” and “Our Day Will Come” which benefits from a shuffle rhythm. Trombonist Wilkins is quite boisterous on Nat Adderley’s soulful “Sweet Emma,” the Jimmy Smith minor blues “Mellow Mood,” and George Coleman’s “Amsterdam After Dark.” Another highpoint is Blue’s “Attitude” which, after an energized and surprising melody, becomes a hot swinger that features the composer.

Ray Blue has been an important saxophonist for the past 20 years, leading his own CDs on a regular basis since 2001. Among those who he has worked with through the years have been  John Gilmore, Art Davis, Ted Curson, Benny Powell, Eddie Henderson, Steve Turre, Wycliff Gordon, Bernard Purdie, Harold Mabern, Kirk Lightsey and the Sun Ra Arkestra. The saxophonist, who has appeared at many international jazz festivals, has also been an influential educator and is the founder of Cross-Cultural Connection, Inc. a non-profit organization that promotes jazz culture, performance and education.

WORK is one of Ray Blue’s most enjoyable outings to date, a melodic set that will appeal to a large audience, especially those who enjoy the Old School swinging jazz style and sound.

THE NEW YORKER

NIGHT LIFE

Daryl Sherman

Nov. 21.
Birdland Theater
315 W. 44th St.
Midtown

212-581-3080

Daryl Sherman, with her low-key charm and chirping voice, might not be the first singer you would think of to honor Louis Armstrong, the gregarious gravel-toned father of modern American vocalizing. But Sherman’s wit, taste, and dedication to choice repertoire—not to mention her just-right piano accompaniment—give her an unimpeachable edge.

— Steve Futterman

Manhattan mainstay Daryl Sherman returns to Birdland Theater this time focusing on jazz trumpet icon Louis Armstrong as a singer and his importance to the American Songbook. He crossed over and outside the box with songs from Broadway, film, pop, plus jazz songs. Known the world over as “Satchmo,” his unique gravelly sound and phrasing influenced singers from Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald to Frank Sinatra. Inspired by renditions which covered blues, swing, to “Kiss To Build A Dream On”, “Chim Chim Cheree” and “Hello Dolly” Daryl Sherman, like Satchmo, will bring out the best in them, along with highly regarded multi reed stylist Scott Robinson and string meister bassist Boots Maleson.

………………..

“On the first of two consecutive evenings at The Pheasantry in Chelsea, Daryl Sherman explored the vocal output of Louis Armstrong. Armstrong is a good choice because he did cover a wide spectrum in a long career. Ms. Sherman, who enjoys a solid UK fan-base, is, of course, a double-threat, possessing not only great pipes but an equally fine piano style. Perhaps the most unusual and refreshing number was the Calypso from the 1956 movie High Society. Suffice it to say it was a great evening thoroughly enjoyed by all those present.” – Jazz Journal (UK)

“Sherman’s nature was kind and patient as she walked her audience through this carefully chosen repertoire. She was mindful to pay tribute to Louis Armstrong’s prestigious career, but also made sure to sing the songs in her own way. Her phrasing was unique and surprising, giving the audience something new to hear when singing such familiar songs. The array of styles included something for everyone.” – London Jazz News

“Daryl Sherman digs deeper into the archives than most of her peers. Her blend of anecdotes and astute musicianship yielded the intimacy of a tete a tete, the audience hanging on every word.”

Clive Davis, The Times (London)

“No veteran singer inhabits the full range of American Popular Song repertoire quite like the irreplaceable Sherman. A gently swinging pianist as well, precious few possess her abundant versatility, style and charm.” – Steve Futterman, The New Yorker

“Singer -pianist Daryl Sherman has been a long-time fixture in the international and New York City jazz world. Her endurance as a favorite is well-founded in her talent and charm. She’s full of life, happy -go-lucky- a perennial breath of spring no matter what the season.” – Marilyn Lester, Nitelife Exchange
