No cause of death has been announced, but it is known that he has had a number of medical problems in recent years.

Jamerson was, obviously, influenced throughout his life by music and hung around regularly at the Motown studios while in his teens. In 1969, he became part of the Gordy Road Shows, mostly touring as the bassist for the Temptations. He also became an in demand session bassist with his first credit being a 1972 Valerie Simpson album and continuing throughout the decade with the likes of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., Tavares, Herb Alpert, the 5th Dimension and many others.

A long time musical cohort, David Williams, joined Jamerson in the mid-70’s to form the group Chanson. Their one, self-titled, album included the Earth, Wind & Fire horns and Boz Scagg’s rhythm section and produced one hit, Don’t Hold Back, which went to number 8 on the R&B singles and 21 on the Hot 100 in 1979.

During the 80’s, he continued his session work with the likes of B.B. King and Bob Dylan and struck up a professional relationship with Tina Marie that saw them working together much of her career. By the turn of the century, he had moved behind the board and was doing mostly production work.

A selection of albums on which Jamerson played:
* Valerie Simpson Exposed – Valerie Simpson
* Check It Out – Tavares
* Rocket Man (A Tribute to Elton John) – Hugo Montenegro
* Two of Us – Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr.
* Chanson – Chanson
* Street Life – Crusaders
* Rise – Herb Alpert
* Royal Jam – The Crusaders with B.B. King

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Y3uophDFhA/VqjWcgMELsI/AAAAAAABDS8/UTfRkAJ8KeY/s1600/Tindall.jpgPhiladelphia and the soul music world have lost one of the great guitarists of the 70’s, T.J. Tindall.

Tindall, who was born and raised in Trenton, NJ, took up music early, starting with drums at the age of 4 and later moving to guitar. At the age of 20, he began regular pilgrimages to the offices and studio of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff in Philadelphia where he finally got his break sitting in with the Edison Electric Band.

T.J. eventually became the guitarist for the Philadelphia International house band MFSB, first heard on the O’Jay’s massive hit Love Train. They went on to back some of the label’s biggest stars and, in 1974, broke out on their own with the number 1 singles TSOP which went on to become the theme from the show Soul Train.

MFSB continued to have occassional hits throughout the disco era including Love is the Message (1974 / #42 R&B / #85 Pop), Sexy (1975 / #2 R&B / #42 Pop / #1 Disco), Summertime and I’m Feelin’ Mellow (1976 / #65 R&B / #1 Disco) and Picnic in the Park (1976 / #1 Disco).

A number of members of MFSB, including Tindall, had a disagreement with Gamble and Huff over money and moved to Salsoul Records where they became the Salsoul Orchestra. Another of the great disco instrumental groups, their popularity peaked with the single Tangerine (1976 / #18 Pop).

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3gkI7YyRurk/VqjWcunrGiI/AAAAAAABDTA/ZPNUhf85xm8/s1600/Tindall%2B2.jpgIn the early 80’s, Tindall became disillusioned by the changes in the sound of music and left the business to take over the family’s lighting business. It wasn’t until 2011 that he returned, forming T.J. Tindall’s East Coast who have played regularly around the New Jersey and Pennsylvania area.

Other credits for Tindall include work with Bonnie Raitt, Joe Simon, Bobby Whitlock, Don Covay, the Whispers, the Tramps, Robert Palmer, Loleatta Holloway and others.

Our thanks to Soul Tracks (http://www.soultracks.com/story-tj-tindall-dies) for first reporting on Tindall’s passing.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Y3uophDFhA/VqjWcgMELsI/AAAAAAABDS8/UTfRkAJ8KeY/s1600/Tindall.jpgPhiladelphia and the soul music world have lost one of the great guitarists of the 70’s, T.J.

He was 76.

There were two distinct personalities and entertainers embodied in one soul. Clarence Reid produced for artists like Betty Wright, Sam & Dave, Gwen McRae, Jimmy “Bo” Horne and KC and the Sunshine Band. As a writer, Reid penned such hits as Wright’s Clean Up Woman and Girls Can’t Do What the Guys Do and McCrae’s Rockin’ Chair.

Then there was Blowfly whose sexually explicit rewrites of popular hits were relegated to the “party albums” section of the record store. According to his website, he received his nickname after his grandmother heard him singing one of his explicit lyrics, saying “You is nastier than a blowfly.”

Originally, he only performed these parodies for friends at parties but, in 1971, he went into the studio and recorded The Weird World of Blowfly. On all of his Blowfly albums, he wore strange costumes to protect his career as an in demand producer and songwriter from being associated with the X-rated recordings.

While the Blowfly albums rarely sold enough to chart, he did make it to number 26 on the R&B albums and 82 on the Billboard 200 with his 1980 album Rapp Dirty.

Outside of the Blowfly character, Reid kept busy producing and writing along with recording three albums under his regular name. In 1969, he reached number 7 as Clarence Reid on the R&B chart with Nobody But You Babe. He also charted with Good Old Days (1972 / #38 R&B) and Funky Party (1974 / #17 R&B / #99 Pop).

In 2005, Reid found new success with his Blowfly character when he signed with Jello Biafra’s Alternative Testicles label and released Farenheit 69 (2005) and Blowfly’s Punk Rock Party (2006). A documentary on his life, The Weird World of Blowfly, was released in 2010.

On January 12, Blowfly drummer Tom Bowker announced that Reid had terminal liver cancer and was living in a hospice. A final album, 77 Trombones, is expected in February.
