Happy Valentine’s Day – Enjoy some “Love and Kisses” from Chicago’s Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas

“Queen of the holiday single, Susie Blue does not disappoint this V-Day. SWINGING you with a delightful romantic rockabilly romp. The tune “Love and Kisses” was originally written and performed by the 1950’s teenage rockabilly phenom Janis Martin who released this sassy ditty in late 1956. Susie is joined in a Blondie-inspired, all-girl vocal harmony by jazz vocalist Jen Zias.

They lull you with an angelic Deborah Harry-esqe harmony that will take you back to Blondie’s early days when she created smooth sounds for retro tunes like “In the Flesh“. Susie and Jen sing in duet, accompanied by Lonesome Fella saxophonist Eric Schneider who is a weekend regular at Chicago’s Green Mill, and guitarist Neal Alger, the band’s musical director. Chris Bernhardt rocks the bass with just the right bit of JazzBilly and Swing drummer Phil Gratteau keeps the tempo going, as if you were being chivied through a field of daisies by Cupid himself.

It’s a fun frolic, leaving you grinning and a little breathless, just like a tantalizing kiss from Cupid, and is a perfect compliment to your Valentine’s Day carousal.”
– Jean M. Reid – Chicago Music Guide

*”Vocalist Solitaire Miles holds fast to a sound reminiscent of roadside bars where just three people are left near closing at the pinball machine.”
– Wall Street Journal*

You can find it on Spotify, itunes, Amazon and Bandcamp

“Music can be a lot of different things. It can be about the celebration of the intellect. It can be about the celebration of the body and movement. It can be about a quest. It can give you inner strength, create a fertile place for peace to exist. I think that what I´ve come to want from music is to have all those things in it.” – Geri Allen

I was stunned to learn yesterday that Tenormore won Best New Release in the 2019 Jazz Times Readers’ Poll. First place! Wow.

I want to thank the great musicians who played their hearts out on this album — Helen Sung, Martin Wind, Dennis Mackrel, and special guest Sharon Robinson — and also Rachel Domber of Arbors records, who was so supportive of this project. And all you beautiful folks who are out there listening!

You can see the poll results here

And the album is available here:

Also, if you are in NYC next weekend, please stop by Jazz At Kitano on Fri. or Sat. to hear me in a duo setting with the great Frank Kimbrough; Info & Tickets HERE

With gratitude, Scott

Tenormore has also appeared in the following “Best Of” lists:
— DownBeat’s “Best of 2019”
— W. Royal Stokes, “10 Best New Releases of 2019”
— Michael Steinman’s 14 notable 2019 releases, Jazz Lives
— Ralph Miriello’s top ten “Best of Jazz 2019,” Notes On Jazz
— Tom Cunniffe, 12 “Best instrumental CDs”
— Dan Bilawsky’s Top Ten list, JazzTimes

What The Press Has To Say About Tenormore:

The range of expression that Robinson is capable of eliciting from a single horn… is astounding. Scott Robinson may take instrumental variegation to a level unsurpassed in this music, but that shouldn’t diminish his position as a tenor saxophonist of note. In that most crowded of fields, he still stands out. (4 ½ stars) -Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

Introducing Scott in a festival a few years ago, I mentioned that his tenor playing had reached a level where he was overshadowing better-known players who were winning polls. Since then, his name comes up more and more frequently in the tenor sax division… -Doug Ramsey of Rifftides (liner notes)

Impassioned playing from Robinson, always in control and yet stretching his sound and tone towards the edge of what’s possible. -Mark McKergow, LondonJazz News

Robinson kicks it all off in daring fashion… he swings effortlessly and delivers a singing quality… while also incorporating some unconventional twists… A winning set (4 stars) -Bill Milkowski, DownBeat

A horn that old has a patina. So does Robinson’s sound… Robinson may tailor each note in a line, varying its thickness, tone, vibrato or volume. He knows the tenor’s emotional range too, wounded cry to soothing consolation, even in a single phrase. A student of its overtones, he may slide into a split-tone passage reminiscent of Tibetan throat singing. Or he’ll leap into the altissimo register… to play a single grace note, or whole high-wire passages (4 ½ stars) -Kevin Whitehead, The Audio Beat

DIG IT! The Peter Gunn theme has lyrics, which you don’t hear very often, and it is performed magnificently by Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas. Get ready for an infusion of coolness.

Chicago vocalist Solitaire Miles aka Susie Blue is great at finding songs.  She writes them occasionally but mostly she finds long forgotten classics and re-arranges them with guitarist Neal Alger, and then the duo unleash them on the Lonesome Fellas who are a gang of seasoned Chicago jazz, blues and roots musicians.  What results are rare gems like this version of “The Peter Gunn Theme”.    Lyrics were added to this notorious Henry Mancini instrumental by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans and first recorded in 1965 by Sarah Vaughan on her album Sarah Vaughan Sings the Mancini Songbook.  Mancini had the lyrics written specifically for Sassy and so far nobody else has recorded the tune with the lyrics until Miles put her chops to it.

“I wanted to try something different and fun.  We  went into the studio one day and Neal and I asked the guys to play it.  Everyone knows this song like the back of their hand and the band was like  REALLY?  I asked trombonist Jack Gallagher to join us for a bigger brass sound with saxophonist Eric Schneider and we were rocking out.”

They aren’t playing their usual Western Swing or Roots music here, this is a pure Chicago Blues and Jazz sound, peppered with spicy horns and a slammin’ rhythm section which features bassist Chris Bernhardt and drummer Phil Grattau.  It’s unlike any version you have probably ever heard and it’s a total infusion of coolness! – JM Reid

JAZZ PROMO SERVICES

BEGINS ITS 20TH YEAR OF SERVING THE JAZZ COMMUNITY

Jim Eigo’s Jazz Promo Services continues its innovations in publicizing a countless number of important jazz artists, venues,
concerts, labels and events

Ever since it was formed in 2001, Jazz Promo Services has been an important force in publicizing the music, events and news of the jazz world. Among the pioneers and innovators in utilizing E-mails for publicity (he can contact virtually anyone in the jazz and music industry), Jim Eigo works with hundreds of clients each year as a publicist, producer and enthusiastic spokesman, creating short, medium and long-range career development strategies. He is unparalleled in informing the jazz world about recording releases, concerts, clubs and all types of relevant information.

Jim Eigo’s many clients through the years (a full listing would take pages) have included such notables as Dr. Billy Taylor, Michel Petrucciani, Ray Barretto, Dave Stryker, James Moody, Boots Randolph, Roy Haynes, Archie Shepp, Eddie Daniels, , Jason Kao Hwang, Roger Kellaway, Denny Zeitlin, Jane Ira Bloom, Hristo Vitchev, Lew Tabackin, Duduka, Oliver Lake, Ernie Watts, Highlights In Jazz and the Vision Festival to name a few.

In addition to these and other veteran greats, Jazz Promo Services also works with many young artists at the beginning of their careers and with any performer (in any style) who has something to say in their music.

Even before 2001, Jim Eigo already had a lifetime of experience. Always enthusiastic about hearing and seeing music, Jim Eigo got his start in the music business as a teenager, working for a jukebox distributor in Brooklyn where he was paid in used records. He worked at Cox Records in Brooklyn and Strand Book Store before landing an important job with Happy Tunes Records in the early 1970s. “It had an eclectic crew of people with every conceivable department having an expert working for them. My mentor was Fred Norsworthy who was responsible for the jazz section. He taught me everything that I needed to know and then, when he left, I was considered the jazz expert and ran the jazz department. Rahsaan Roland Kirk was one of our regular customers at Happy Tunes. Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor would drop by and hang out, along with whoever was appearing at the Village Vanguard. It was the heyday of the Jazz Loft era. I was in my twenties and going out every night, seeing everyone from Alberta Hunter and Mary Lou Williams at the Cookery to whichever great was performing at Sam Rivers’ loft Studio Rivbea. When Alan Douglas and Michael Cuscuna recorded the Wildflowers sessions, I was there. Years later, in the late 1990s, I had the opportunity to work with Michael Dorf and help him with the reissues of those albums.”

Jim set up a mail order company for Happy Tunes and, when the record store was nearing its end, they gave him the mailing list. “That is how Daybreak Express was started. I worked with that company on and off for quite a few years, importing Miles Davis records from Japan and handling many small labels. Simultaneously I became friends with the people from the New Music Distribution Service, went to all of the JCOA workshops, and worked with Michael Mantler and Carla Bley, becoming the sales manager for JCOA.” Other gigs included being hired to set up the Soho Music Gallery, managing the jazz department at J&R Music World, and working for Horace Silver’s Silveto label while still overseeing Daybreak Express.

In the 1990s Jim became the label manager of the Dreyfus label, overseeing their releases. “Jazz Promo came out of that. When Dreyfus had a new release coming out and there was a budget, I would use a publicist. But when they did not have a budget behind a release, it was up to me to do all of the publicity. I gained very valuable experience doing press and radio while building up a database of contacts. When I left Dreyfus, in January 2001 I formed Jazz Promo Services.”

With his experience in retail, record production, marketing, distribution and publicity, Jim Eigo was ready. He became an early adopter of E-mails and was soon known as “The King Of Jazz E-Mail.” “E-mail marketing is what put us on the map. I first sent out notices for artists who were doing one-off gigs, primarily in NY. Then I started really building up my lists so I could distribute other’s press releases to everyone who would be interested.” His New York Hot List has 3,500 contacts by itself, has separate lists for each area of the United States, and internationally has over 10,000 contacts. Jim Eigo can hit target markets for specific live events while casting a very wide net for record releases.

In addition to Jazz Promo Services, Jim worked as the publicist for the Iridium, Les Paul and their other featured artists for a decade, he did the marketing for many years for the Cornelia Street Café, and is the long-time publicist for Jack Kleisinger’s Highlights In Jazz. A year ago he opened Original Vinyl Records, a record store in the Hudson Valley. While one wonders how he finds the time and energy, Jim Eigo simply says, “I love being around records, talking about records, and meeting people who love records.” The store’s friendly atmosphere and wide variety of recordings reflects its owner’s personality and flawless musical taste. (more information can be found at www.originalvinylrecords.com)

After 20 years, Jazz Promo Services remains the leader in its field. How have things changed during the past two decades? “The technology has of course changed, particularly the way that one communicates with editors, writers, jazz fans and musicians. We always have to stay up to date. What has not changed is that one still has to do basic PR 101, particularly writing a really good press release, advancing your dates so you are way out in front, doing regular reminders, and building relationships with all of the important people in the business.”

In summing up his life, Jim Eigo says, “I am very fortunate, am still pretty healthy, and have managed to put together a living out of the jazz business, finding my niche and purpose. The music keeps me young. I’m particularly inspired by Bob Koester who is in his eighties, ran the Delmark label for so many years, and still owns the Jazz Record Mart. Like him, I’m doing what I love.”

Carla Hassett Wraps Up Trio of Singles with a Bossa Nova Sung in English

“Carla Hassett brings out fresh tunes that continue the path started by the likes of Jobim and Gil.”
~ Jazz Weekly

shem.gif

With the third and final release of singer-songwriter Carla Hassett’s trio of bossa nova tracks, comes the poetic and elegant “Three Kings.” The unapologetic bossa groove, freshly interpreted in 7/8 meter, is the only track of the three that’s sung in English. Though a secular song, the poetry tips a hat to the mysticism of love and its devout complexities. Hassett says that “while daydreaming one day, this line from Romeo and Juliet popped into my head: ‘Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love and I’ll no longer be a Capulet.’ When I thought about my Romeo, well, two actually came to mind from my past, along with the current Romeo at that time. Turns out, my Romeo was actually three kings!” Intending to create a highly poetic lyric, Hassett gave each “king” his own verse, whose rhyme scheme coincides with their names. The chorus is borrowed from Shakespere, and verse four explains the song in the soliloquy style of the Bard, then wraps up the story with an unexpectedly charming end.

BURL Audio’s invitation for Carla to record the 1961 bossa nova tune, “Adriana” (by Roberto Menescal) at the iconic EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, resulted in two additional recordings, Hassett’s own “Sempre Odara,” and “Three Kings.” Carla brought in bassist Andre de Santanna, and drummer Léo Costa from Sergio Mendes’s band, and Dan Reckard, from Bossa Zuzu, on piano to record in the room Frank Sinatra once sang in. Carla handled the vocals and guitar, and completed the production and mixing of “Sempre Odara” and “Three Kings” in her LA studio. The Burlacticus Recording Company (Burl Audio’s label) released “Adriana” on vinyl in 2019, and is expected to release a live concert film in early 2020 that features Carla’s performance at the Rio Theatre for the Performing Arts in Santa Cruz, California.

Bio
There’s no mystery to the source of Hassett’s musical identity. The São Paulo-born singer-songwriter grew up in a Brazilian community in Chicago, studying piano and guitar from an early age, and writing and recording her own tunes on her father’s reel-to-reel before she hit her teens. Besides absorbing the Brazilian music her parents and extended family enjoyed listening to at home, Hassett soaked up rock, blues, funk and all of the other sounds popular in the Windy City. It wasn’t long before she turned pro, playing and singing with Chicago bands and lending her voice to jingles for national advertising campaigns.

Hassett moved to Los Angeles and built a career singing backup on tour and in the recording studio with the likes of Billy Idol, Sergio Mendes, Gino Vannelli, actor/musician Gary Sinise, Grammy award-winning soul legend Solomon Burke, Flora Purim and Airto Moreira, Mike Patton, Natalie Cole, and a bevy of Latin music superstars, like Caetano Veloso. Hassett also lent her voice to the movie soundtracks of RioRio 2, Netflix’s Like Father, and Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle.

On her previous album, +Blue, Carla explored the meaning of “home” and the complexities of growing up between two countries and cultures, stylistically expressed through tropicalia and samba. With the trio of singles, “Adriana,” “Sempre Odara,” and “Three Kings,” Carla embraces the understated power and beauty of her home’s most celebrated music–bossa nova.

Carla graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music, and is on the commercial music faculty at California State University, Los Angeles. She writes, records, and produces music from her studio in Los Angeles, and cites among her influences, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, Jorge Ben Jor, and her “patron saint” Carmen Miranda, as well as Aretha Franklin, Freddy Mercury, and Amy Winehouse.

New York vocalist Kendra Shank pays tribute to her friend and mentor Abbey Lincoln (1930 – 2010) in a program of songs composed by the legendary singer, songwriter, actress, poet, civil rights activist, and NEA Jazz Master whose powerful messages of love, struggle, hope, and freedom are timeless and timely. Shank’s CD A Spirit Free: Abbey Lincoln Songbook (2007, the first Lincoln songbook ever recorded) received a New York Times Critics’ Choice, 4 stars in DownBeat, and numerous “Best of the Year” awards, among other accolades. “Her tribute is both reverent and creative, illuminating new possibilities for these songs and shedding new light on their composer” (Larry Blumenfeld, Entertainment Weekly). Shank played guitar on Lincoln’s Over the Years CD and live with her at the Blue Note. “Abbey’s songs celebrate the human spirit and address social issues that are relevant to our times,” says Kendra, “I’m honored to celebrate her legacy and 90th birthyear at Winter Jazzfest.”

“A wide open, mind-bending celebration of the human spirit.” -Tom Henry, The Blade

Kendra Shank’s seven CDs have won numerous “Best of the Year” citations, DownBeat poll recognition, and acclaim for her “delectable voice” (TIME magazine) and “breathtakingly original concept” (Boston Globe). Her career began as a folk singer-guitarist busking in Paris. When her passion turned to jazz, she studied with vocalist Jay Clayton in Seattle and was also mentored by Shirley Horn who co-produced her debut album and showcased her at the Village Vanguard in 1992. Since then Shank has headlined at New York’s Blue Note, Birdland, Jazz Standard, Iridium, and holds an 18-year residency at the 55 Bar. She’s appeared on NPR’s JazzSet and Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz and has toured in Europe, Japan, South Africa, Australia, Canada and the U.S. including jazz festivals in Portland, Saratoga, Seattle, Calgary, Edmonton, Vienne, Marciac, Wangaratta, and more. In addition to her 21-year collaboration with Frank Kimbrough and Dean Johnson, Shank has performed and/or recorded with Fred Hersch, Larry Willis, Geoffrey Keezer, Bob Dorough, Jay Clayton, Joe Locke, Gary Bartz, Steve Wilson, Peter Leitch, John Stowell, Ben Monder, Victor Lewis, Matt Wilson, and many others. (Time quote by Terry Teachout; Boston Globe by Andrew Gilbert)

“Very refreshing… a singer who’s approaching the music with her voice as an instrument.”
– Dee Dee Bridgewater, DownBeat (blindfold test)

“Ms. Shank, an emotionally forthright singer, brings care and confidence to her performance. She sounds equally at home with the worldly ache of “Down Here Below”
and the percussive clangor of “Throw It Away.”
– Nate Chinen, New York Times (Critics’ Choice)

“Skin-peeling, heart-stopping renditions. So much beauty and power here.”
– Joseph Blake, Victoria Times Colonist

“Shank smoothly navigates difficult passages, handles tempo shifts and chord changes without hesitation or vocal misstep, and can swing, sing the blues or shift into a samba sequence while maintaining control and also putting her own imprint on every number.”
– Ron Wynn, Nashville City Paper

Joan Merrill
LET’S GIVE DORIS DAY HER DUE

LET’S GIVE DORIS DAY HER DUE

Renowned film critic Molly Haskell said, “I think Doris Day is the most underrated, underappreciated actress that has ever come out of Hollywood.”  And Will Friedwald, popular singing guru, says “At her very best, she’s worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald, yet she’s never gotten a fraction of their respect.”

Let’s give Doris Day her due.

In focusing on her cinematic “image” of a woman protecting her virtue (in the 1959 movie “Pillow Talk” with Rock Hudson and “A Touch of Mink”with Cary Grant) instead of her career as a whole does her legacy a great disservice.

Doris Day was a popular big band singer with Les Brown  when she recorded the iconic “Sentimental Journey in 1945; a top recording artist for Columbia Records with multiple gold records from 1947 to 1967; a movie actress who was a top ten box office draw in the 1960s (with four years in first place); and one of the first actresses to play a career woman on television (1968 to 1972).
In the first half of her film career (1948-1954), Day was under contract to Warner Brothers and was cast in sixteen musicals, in which she demonstrated not only her singing chops, but a dancing ability that impressed even the films’ choreographers.

In the twenty-two movies of the second half of her career (1955-1968), Day appeared in only two musicals, “Pajama Game” and “Jumbo,” both of which were outstanding.

She became the queen of the romantic comedy, and did some heavy drama as Ruth Etting in “Love Me or Leave Me” and her husband’s murder target in “Midnight Lace.”

She most often played a career woman (one of the first actresses to do so), or a widowed or married mother, as in such excellent films as “Teacher’s Pet,” “It Happened to Jane,” “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies,” and “The Thrill of It All.”

Some of her other movies were inferior, but whenever Doris objected to scripts, her husband and agent Marty Melcher told her she had to do them for the sake of their financial stability. (Little did Doris know then that he was squandering her earnings in bad investments.)

However, she did turn down “The Graduate”, but not because of her “image,” which she could care less about, but because she didn’t want to play a married woman seducing a man young enough to be her son (and as her own son, Terry).

In the words of author Tom Santopietro in his excellent book, “Considering Doris Day:”
“When Doris Day was given the right movie script to act and the right song to sing, she was nothing short of terrific. She was an astonishingly talented woman who could do it all and could do it brilliantly.”

It’s time this great artist is given the recognition she deserves.

– Joan Merrill, producer of the tribute show, “Que Sera! Celebrating Doris Day With Kristi King.”

The Best Songs of 2019

From Ipanema Beach to Corcovado mountain, the natural beauty of Rio de Janeiro is self-evident. It’s almost as if the postcard itself was invented to honor this coastal city, with its lagoons, forests, and tropical climate. But the same could also be said for the album, as this city has birthed musical styles such as bossa nova, samba and choro. Indeed, elements of these musical styles can be traced to Africa, but there is no mistaking that Rio’s artistic identity is partly defined by these rich genres.

Rio’s musical traditions are the very grist for this production. Delicado is a tribute to the music of this renowned and beloved city. “We wanted to honor the exuberant nature and welcoming spirit of the cariocas,” said Carlos Barbosa-Lima, the guitar maestro and leader of this production. So, he with his fellow musical partners selected several compositions that were written by cariocas or by those familiar with Rio. And what a band Carlos has gathered: Larry Del Casale (guitar), Duduka da Fonseca (percussion), Nilson Matta (bass), and Helio Alves (piano). All four of them have been frequent prior contributors to ZOHO CD releases, most notably recently Duduka Da Fonseca and Nilson Matta on their 2016 Grammy nominated Trio Da Paz “30” ZOHO (ZM 201602).

Tico Tico by Zèquinha de Abreu (1880-1935) is the name of a migrating bird that came from Portugal to Brazil and settled in the early 1900s. This bird inspired de Abreu to write this exciting tune that became an international hit in the early 1940s. This arrangement is for two guitars and incorporates the choros style with up-tempo chorinho. There is a colorful interlude with terrific and well-placed percussion effects by Duduka Da Fonseca.

The title track Delicado, composed by Waldyr Azevedo (1923-1980), the Brazilian composer and master of the choro music form. He was also virtuoso of the cavaquinho, the small four string guitar, similar to a ukulele. He wrote this song in the 1950s, and it became a sensation around the world. Its rhythm is known as the xaxado, which is a style related to the baiao. This arrangement features both guitars playing the melody, with Barbosa-Lima also playing the bassline throughout. The up-tempo feel is accented with da Fonseca, percussion, and Alves’s elegant piano touches.

Samba de Orfeu is by Luiz Bonfá (1922-2001), a Brazilian composer and guitarist. This piece is played during the climax of the Orfeu tragedy in the iconic 1959 film “Black Orpheus,” which was based on a play by Vinicius de Moraes who adapted the story from Greek legend. Orfeu is pushed from the top of a hill and tumbles to his death. The up-tempo samba rhythm was an all-aboard experience for Barbosa-Lima, as the whole band enriches this number in a magnificent manner.

A Felicidade by iconic Brazilian composer, arranger, and pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) is another seminal composition that is played through the 1959 movie “Black Orpheus”. This piece is a moderately paced samba, and Barbosa-Lima’s rendition deftly incorporates new sonorities and a solid rhythmic bass. The coda adds a colorful ending that evokes the mystical spirit of Carnaval.

Manhã de Carnaval is again by Luiz Bonfá, the Brazilian composer and guitarist. This piece is played at a dramatic point in the film “Black Orpheus”. We hear this song when Orfeu, a character in the movie, loses everything but wants to retain his guitar at an auction. “It’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written in Brazil,” says Barbosa-Lima. And indeed, his arrangement is both soulful and searing.

Odeon was written by Ernesto Nazareth (1863-1934), an influential Brazilian composer. The piece incorporates elements of maxixe and merges polka into a style he termed “tango brasileiro.” It was meant as a tribute to the first movie theater in Rio during the twentieth century. Barbosa-Lima arranged the piece for solo guitar in the same key as the original first piano version.

Manha de Carnaval is again by Luiz Bonfá (1922-2001), the Brazilian composer and guitarist.

Interrogando is by João Pernambuco (1883-1947), a Brazilian composer and self-taught guitarist. He went to Rio during the late 1800s and had a close friendship with Villa-Lobos, the pre-eminent Classical Brazilian composer of the first half of the 20th century. Barbosa-Lima’s arrangement of this piece respects the original format over a jongo rhythm, and alternates playing as if there are questions and answers.

Feitiço da Vila is by Noel Rosa (1910-1937), a Brazilian composer-songwriter. He was a doctor who died young at the age of twenty-six, before the invention of penicillin. The title means “bewitching villa,” and it’s about Vila Isabel, a northern area of Rio.

Barbosa-Lima’s arrangement incorporates polyphony supported with a clear bass.
Samba do Avião by Antonio Carlos Jobim was written when he arrived in Rio, as he was excited by his beloved city. Barbosa-Lima’s arrangement adds rhythmic intricacies that helps the overall swing, undoubtedly enriched by the other members of the band.
Sambolero by Luiz Bonfá – was a dear friend of Barbosa-Lima since he was nine years old. “Luiz introduced me to his teacher Isaias Savio. Luiz was so creative and was able to merge his classical playing with more polyphony to create colorful effects,” said Barbosa-Lima. This piece is a tribute to the merging of the bolero style from all Latin America with the samba-cancao tradition that evolved in the 1950s.

Chovendo na Roseira was also composed Antonio Carlos Jobim. It’s an undulating jazz waltz, and it’s about the rain’s effect on the people of Rio. “This is one of Jobim’s masterpieces,” said Barbosa-Lima. Both he and Del Casale deftly take turns playing the melody to create a stirring rendition of this classic number.

On Prelude to Canto de Ossanha, famed Brazilian drummer Duduka Da Fonseca introduces the berimbau, a one-stringed percussion instrument which almost looks like a hunting bow. Duduka’s astringent, rhythmically inventive solo creates the perfect counterpoint to the melodically rich composition that follows it.

Canto de Ossanha was composed by Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell (1937 – 2000) and poet/lyricist Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980). They both were intrigued by Afro-Brazilian roots and this piece evokes these elements. “I knew Baden Powell well and performed with him. He was a warm person and incredibly creative,” said Barbosa-Lima. The music begins with Barbosa-Lima bending guitar strings to draw a percussive effect.
Eu Não Existo Sem Você by Antonio Carlos Jobim is a haunting piece in the samba-cancao style. Barbosa-Lima arranged the piece for two guitars, and both exchange the leads, and musical flow is never interrupted. With textural percussion, a bittersweet sentiment is present throughout. The Debussy-like coda is both historical and contemporary, with a becoming harmony that fades into resolution.

Tristeza by Haroldo Lobo (1910-1965) and Niltinho (1928-2014) was a big hit in the 1966 carnaval, and it has remained popular. Barbosa-Lima is adding contrapuntal harmonies and classical techniques to this composition. The introduction is a taste of modern Rio, at times noisy (and marred by social unrest), but it gives way to a more harmonious middle section, a reminder of the exuberant nature of this beautiful city.
It has been a privilege of a lifetime to help produce this album. Performed by virtuosos Carlos Barbosa-Lima and his collaborators, this album has a timeless feel to it.
-Kabir Sehgal
Multi-GRAMMY & Latin GRAMMY Award winner
New York Times bestselling author

The first time I performed with Carlos Barbosa-Lima was in 2003 at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. We performed his wonderful guitar duo arrangement of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Luiza”.  Since that evening, we have performed together as a duo all over the western hemisphere. We also recorded together for ZOHO on Carlos’ albums “Beatlerianas” (ZOHO ZM 201304) and “Carlos Barbosa-Lima plays Mason Williams” (ZOHO ZM 201610).

Carlos is a giant amongst guitarists. His arrangements on Delicado are subtle, sophisticated and virtuosic, taking his harmonic language to a new level. To expand on these arrangements, we enlisted some of the greatest Brazilian jazz musicians performing and recording today. Working with them was a dream and an honor. Therefore, a big abraco to the musicians, engineers, Kabir, ZOHO Music, and my dearest friend who inspires me to play my very best, Carlos Barbosa-Lima!

New York Times Best of 2019
picks a track from Eight Track Christmas

The guitarist Dave Stryker trades melody duties with the vibraphonist Stefon Harris on this cover of Donny Hathaway’s modern-day Christmas classic. Rounded out by the organist Jared Gold and the drummer McClenty Hunter (doubling on jingle bells), Stryker’s Eight Track Band plays the tune at the same sauntering, medium tempo that Hathaway used; even without Hathaway’s munificent voice or the boisterous horn section of the original, the tune’s infectious, syncopated melody and the low-key virtuosity of this quartet’s members are enough.

“Roberta Donnay and the Prohibition Mob Band bring to new life the blues and jazz of the 1920s and ’30s, diving deep into the music of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Sippie Wallace, Ethel Waters, and Ida Cox. Roberta’s “interpretive license is valid for both jazz and blues,” and that she “knows exactly how far she can go, drawing inspiration from time-honored singers…without sacrificing a sense of self.”- DownBeat Mag

“Once in awhile, a talent comes along that’s an undeniable force of nature. Roberta Donnay fits that description.” – Music and More Arizona

“With her singularly enticing sound, few contemporary vocalists are as well suited to dustily vintage material as jazz-blues stylist Roberta Donnay..”
– Jazz Times

“Donnay’s voice could make any classic material sound wondrous and timeless, but the fact that she digs so deep into American musical history — makes “A Little Sugar” not only sweet, but a recording that will stand the test of time.” – All Music Guide

“Roberta Donnay is a Jazz Age preservationist, guardian of Depression-era sounds, and extender of traditions, but her music isn’t covered with cobwebs or dated in any way. On Bathtub Gin, this singer- composer puts a new coat of paint on the songs of the ’20s and ’30s, contributes originals sympathetic to the sounds of those times, and conjures thoughts of life during prohibition.”
– All About Jazz

“[Roberta Donnay’s] engagement with the lyrics, her supple sense of time and her soulful, little-girl timbre remind you of Billie Holiday.”
-Mike Zwerin, International Herald Tribune

“She is an endangered species.” – Dr. Herb Wong

Award-winning vocalist and songwriter Roberta Donnay is that rare species of musician who almost lives in another time, as she and her Prohibition Mob Band exist to revive the Jazz Age of America. ~ Motema Music

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Billboard charting, six-time Global Music Award Medalist and internationally acclaimed jazz and Americana singer/songwriter/pianist Katherine ‘KOOL KAT’ Farnham will perform with her longtime band at the Steinway Gallery in Nashville on Friday, January 24, 2020. The concert will feature originals from her new project as well as beloved favorites.

The four-octave vocalist and classically trained pianist has recorded with many renowned musicians, including legendary saxophonist and Grammy winner Kirk Whalum, Latin Grammy winner Nestor Torres and Grammy nominees Mindi Abair and Denny Jiosa. Her award-winning, internationally acclaimed ‘Vintage’ LP garnered interviews and airplay in US, Canada, Europe, South America and Africa along with standing ovation and sold out live performances. In recognition of this album’s significant contributions, it was placed in the jazz archives at the Mediatheque Musicale in Paris, France.

She has earned the love of fans and jazz aficionados alike with her unique and retitled single ‘My Funky Valentine’. Jazz Weekly says, “Farnham adds some backbeat to a clever read of a standard in ‘My Funky Valentine’ and her voice is rich and strongly confident.” Two-Time Emmy Nominee and Celebrity Radio Host Philip Silverstone captured her essence raving, “absolutely brilliant. Kool Kat is doing for jazz what Clapton did for the blues – bringing it to the mainstream.”

Katherine has appeared on Good Morning America, sung live on NBC 6 and Telemundo and toured throughout the US and abroad. She has performed at festivals including the Hub City Jazz Festival outside New York City, and on stages with Latin jazz greats Tito Puente Jr and Celia Cruz. She has even inspired audiences with her formidable courage at major sporting events such as the Ericsson Open where she was the only female artist, The Miami Marathon and national tour dates for NASCAR.

A third generation musician, Farnham possesses a world-class musical legacy. She began performing as leading lady in a school play at the tender age of five, and gave her first jazz vocal solo performance a few months later. She studied with her mother, a concert pianist, educator and vocal coach for The Sante Fe Opera. Her mother studied with European concert artist Madame Dayas, who studied with her parents, who studied with legendary pianist/ composer Franz Liszt.

The singer/songwriter/pianist’s intense passion and skill have resulted in many accolades, including a Billboard-charting hit for “Necessary Groove”. In addition to her six Global Music Award wins, she is a Los Angeles Music Award winner and was named the top Female Singer/ Songwriter in the entire quarter century run of the awards show. She also has been honored with the prestigious Hollywood F.A.M.E. Award, a Rotary Outstanding Award and in 2019 was one of the youngest recipients of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.

Farnham has also performed for many charitable organizations throughout the nation. She supports veterans causes, ASPCA, Doctors Without Borders and others.

The Steinway Gallery is located at 4285 Sidco Drive in Nashville, TN. Tickets are $25.00. There will be a product giveaway during the show. Parking is free. For directions, call (615) 373-5901.

“It was fascinating to hear Anne Phillips apply her freer, more sophisticated, jazzier style to standards, and her own songs. And her freer, sophisticated, jazzier style is in full display on this outstanding recording.”
–Ron Weinstock, Jazz & Blues Report

“Phillips adds thoughtful anecdotes that help the audience – and now listeners – understand her history in a beautiful, personal way.

Her original gems feel comfortable alongside classics by Mel Torme and The Gershwins. They are even more emotionally gripping.”

–Jonathan Widran, The JW Vibe

CRITICAL ACCLAIM
for Denny Zeitlin’s 2019 Solo Piano CD recorded at Piedmont Piano Company: “Remembering Miles”

“On Remembering Miles Denny Zeitlin takes all the measures of what makes pianism great and relocates them to another rarefied realm… There is nothing contrived or attention-seeking about his approach… His traversal of this music is instantly spellbinding for all the right reasons… Everywhere Mr. Zeitlin strikes a compelling balance between volatility and elegance, while maintaining the intuitive sensibility of a jazz artist.” Raul da Gama, JazzdaGama

“…Remembering Miles represents the culmination of six decades of recorded jazz by Denny Zeitlin and you have to listen to it to truly understand how special it is in terms of the gift of the experience and genius that Denny brings to his music. Few pianists could have rendered the music of Miles Davis in a solo piano setting with such discrimination and heartfelt sincerity.”  Steven Cerra, Jazzprofiles.blogspot

“… An extraordinary recording career that began in 1963…with [this 2019 CD] Zeitlin taking these selected tunes on–and interpreting liberally–with just his piano and his own idiosyncratic reimaginings, you get an essence of two souls… Zeitlin is always startlingly virtuosic, and he is blessed with freewheeling improvisational elasticity… One of the most compelling and beautiful albums of Denny Zeitlin’s career.” Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz

“… Denny’s solo piano approach here is more to use the songs almost like loose backdrops for sonic poetry–these incredibly complex lines on the piano that are at once free and melodic, modern and meaningful… The album is as revolutionary as anything the pianist recorde decades back…” DustyGroove

“… By the end of Zeitlin’s recital, it is fair to marvel at the range of Davis’s music, of course, but also at the versatility of this pianist, a master of so many styles and approaches… Denny Zeitlin is a musician who never got stuck in one way of approaching the art…” Will Layman, PopMatters

“… Doing more with a solo piano than anyone else can, Zeitlin serves as an explosive and revelatory meeting of the minds that finds the octogenarian playing with the verve and smarts of a 20-year-old with an old soul. Another in a series of penultimate dates from the master.” Chris Spector, MidwestRecord

“… By reaping the best of both worlds and respecting Miles’ original portrayals of his songs and moving them forward with imaginative, dynamically fresh takes, Denny Zeitlin pays ultimate homage to Miles Davis. The Prince of Darkness was a master at recognizing other people’s good ideas and making them great; Zeitlin does the same while he’s Remembering Miles.”  S. Victor Aaron, SomethingElseReviews

“… Denny Zeitlin is a master. His love for this music comes shining through the notes he plays and how he rearranges the song so you hear them  anew… Splendid recording, sweet sound, and great music…”  Richard B. Kamins, StepTempest.blogspot

“Arriving on the jazz scene in the mid-60s while simultaneously practicing and teaching psychiatry, pianist Denny Zeitlin has consistently conducted his musical career on multiple tracks. He has played postbop as well as free improv, veered between electric and acoustic settings, drawn from classical composition and fusion, and played solo when he wasn’t leading duos, trios, or larger ensembles…all those influences resonate through the music heard on Remembering Miles…it all adds up to an intriguing collection of Miles’ musical stories, familiar but given refreshing new spins.”
Philip Booth, JazzTimes

“one of our most lyrical pianists, Denny Zeitlin delivers a tour de force solo performance, interpreting songs from the wide ranging Miles Davis songbook… Like his previous interpretation of Wayne Shorter material, this one’s a real treat and a moving tribute to an artist that bridged     wide gaps…”
 George W. Harris, JazzWeekly

“… Zeitlin’s a master at reconstructing melody, mood, and movement, making a meal out of nuance in the great artists of the times– himself included… Denny Zeitlin puts a lot of his own adventurous, thought-provoking spirit into each and every weird and wonderful note for quite a show, and quite an album.” Carol Banks Weber, FestivalPeak

Throughout its extensive history, the Highlights In Jazz series has made a practice of presenting a spectrum of the most beloved and admired jazz players on the scene. The upcoming 2020 season is no exception, with the exciting four-concert series bringing together stellar musicians including Jimmy Cobb, Jay Leonhart, Bernard Purdie, Art Baron, Russell Malone and others. Count on hearing unforgettable performances from Wycliffe Gordon, Peter and Will Anderson, Victor Lewis, Eddie Daniels, joined by an array of greats.

The season starts with the annual anniversary gala, and wraps up with an all-star jam. In between, an exciting roster of in-demand musicians will pay tribute to a pantheon of jazz legends, including this year’s featured honoree, pianist Roger Kellaway, and a show devoted to the music of Duke Ellington.

With the Highlights In Jazz series nudging the half-century mark, producer Jack Kleinsinger notes that over the years, every concert has featured a renowned surprise guest, and has included a variety of younger artists and veterans. “And every year we honor a living jazz great—I want to salute them and show them how much we love their music while they’re still with us,” he declares. “Lionel Hampton was the first. This year we’re saluting Roger Kellaway as our living jazz great, and honoring the departed genius Duke Ellington.”

From the get-go, Kleinsinger has aimed to present multiple facets of jazz to an attentive audience. “We’ve done mainstream, Dixieland, swing, bebop; not avant-garde, not far-out, nothing that will scare anybody,” the producer explains. “I aim for an old-school, all-star lineup on the bandstand, and combinations of people who have never played together before. It’s not what you’d get elsewhere, and we always attract a listening audience.”

The new season kicks off Feb. 13, 2020, with the Highlights In Jazz 47th Anniversary Gala, featuring bassist Jay Leonhart, drummer Jimmy Cobb, pianist Tomoko Ohno, percussionist/drummer Memo Acevedo, violinist/mandolinist Aaron Weinstein, and drummer Vito Lesczak.

Bassist Jay Leonhart was dubbed “the Fred Astaire of jazz” by the L.A. Times’ Don Heckman, who described him as “a craftsman so seamlessly smooth that casual observers often fail to grasp the immensity of his talent.” A Highlights In Jazz mainstay, Jay has kept good musical company throughout his career, having performed with Duke Ellington, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jim Hall, Buddy Rich and Roy Eldridge, among other jazz greats. The bassist is also lauded for his singing, composing, and witty lyrics. Though one of Jay’s best-known tunes is called, “It’s Impossible to Sing and Play the Bass,” he does both with great skill, much to the delight of audiences everywhere.

Drummer Jimmy Cobb celebrates his 91st birthday on January 20, 2020, just a few weeks before appearing at the Highlights In Jazz Gala. The fact that he played on the timeless Miles Davis album Kind of Blue and Coltrane’s iconic Giant Steps would have been enough to guarantee Jimmy Cobb a space in the jazz pantheon. And then there was his unforgettable work with Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter, Dinah Washington, Wes Montgomery, and his own bands, such as Cobb’s Mob. It’s no exaggeration to call Jimmy Cobb one of jazz’s reigning elder statesmen, and the nonagenarian is showing no signs of slowing down. He continues to teach master classes across the country and around the world. The veteran drummer gigs regularly, and he keeps sounding better and better, according to more than one critic.

Pianist Tomoko Ohno began to learn her way around the keyboard at an age when most kids are struggling to master the alphabet. Though she earned a degree in law and politics in her native Japan, she moved to the U.S. to continue her music studies with jazz icons such as Harold Mabern and Rufus Reid. Since then, Tomoko Ohno has gone on to play with Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis, the Diva Jazz Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, and her own ensembles, taking to the stage of some of the world’s most renowned music venues. Tomoko Ohno frequently collaborates with bassist Jay Leonhart, and has released a duo album with him, as well as several recordings as a leader.

Percussionist/drummer Memo Acevedo excels at both jazz and Latin music. He honed his craft around the globe, while living in Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Canada, California and New York. Memo has performed and recorded with musical masters including Tito Puente, Moacir Santos, Ivan Lins, Mark Murphy, Jackie & Roy, Dave Valentín, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Angelique Kidjo, Hilton Ruiz, Louie Bellson and the Cuban band Irakere, as well as with his own ensembles. Renowned as an educator as well as a performer, Memo has written books on Brazilian and Afro-Caribbean drumming, and won numerous awards.

Violinist/mandolinist Aaron Weinstein is “a perfect musician” according to jazz luminary Bucky Pizzarelli. The legendary guitarist is not the only one who has found a lot to like about Aaron Weinstein. This young string maven has also garnered attention from Tony Bennett, and performed with the likes of Les Paul, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Dave Frishberg, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. Aaron Weinstein has released several albums as a leader, and recorded with musicians as diverse as Skitch Henderson, Jessica Molaskey, Jim Caruso, Christine Ebersole, Jay Geiles and more.

Drummer Vito Lesczak moved to the Big Apple in 1992, and since then has become an indispensable part of the jazz scene. He’s appeared on dozens of albums, working with recognized giants of the genre such as Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Mark Murphy, Jay Clayton, Don Braden, Bucky Pizzarelli, Gene Bertoncini, Bob Cranshaw, Eric Alexander, Larry Goldings, Andy Bey and Bill Charlap. Vito also fronts his own ensembles and has performed in New York and around the globe at major festivals and renowned venues.

Jack Kleinsinger notes that Jay Leonhart has probably played more Highlights In Jazz concerts than anyone else. “Jay is doing two concerts this year,” the producer points out. “It just worked out that way. I like to include old faces, new faces, to try to keep it different. But Jay is so flexible: He plays bass, he’s a singer, a song writer, he’s even written as tune about me,” the producer points out with a laugh.

Kleinsinger always surprises audiences with unannounced special guests, and there’s a good chance there will be some last-minute, unscheduled players—the producer claims that at least a quarter of the surprise guests are a surprise even to him. “It’s the return of the jam—players show up in the audience and we put them on,” Jack explains. “If I see them in the audience, they’re there at their own peril—I’ll get them onstage. People sitting in is part of our tradition. It’s exciting for the audience when a big name comes on unexpectedly.”

The secret to the longevity of the beloved Highlights In Jazz series? “We’re doing the concerts other producers don’t do,” Kleinsinger says, “and in the process we’ve outlasted everyone who’s ever done jazz concerts in the history of New York.”

Keep your fingers crossed for surprises–who knows what could happen to kick off this smashing new season of Highlights In Jazz!

Boston, MA – November 20, 2019 – Eyran Records announces the release of master jazz pianist Eyran Katsenelenbogen’s highly anticipated new solo album, Outstandards

“I would like to thank the wonderful students at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School for inspiring many of the pieces on Outstandards and their arrangements.” — Eyran Katsenelenbogen

In Outstandards, pianist Eyran Katsenelenbogen presents jazzy renditions of classical cornerstones such as “Für Elise” (Beethoven) and Mozart’s “Piano Sonata in C major” alongside jazz classics such as “Tea for Two” (Youmans / Caesar) and “Cheek to Cheek” (Berlin). Katsenelenbogen also revisits Chick Corea’s “Armando’s Rhumba,” which was released on his CD Solotude in 2005 and delivers an intimate performance of “Insensatez” (How Insensitive) (Jobim / De Moraes). Prior to their recording for the CD, all the pieces on Outstandards were performed extensively during Eyran’s concert tours in China in 2014 and 2016. The piece “Insensetaz” (How Insensitive) carries a special meaning for Katsenelenbogen and is dedicated it to his parents, in gratitude for their eternal love.

Praise for Eyran Katsenelenbogen

“Perhaps Katsenelenbogen is most in league with Art Tatum for this fact: he sets the bar towards which other pianists must strive.” — Jay Deshpande, All About Jazz

“He is a passionate man who feels deeply, and he has the talent to express those feelings through his playing. You can not help but be moved by his performance.” — Frank Rubolino, Cadence

“And the fact that, as on Outstandards, Eyran can arrange the most well known classical themes as stride or bebop without losing their essence further defines the term ‘virtuoso.'” — Andrea Canter, Jazz Police

“He can do pretty much anything with a piano and there is an irrepressible joy to the playing that we could use right now”  — Brian Morton, Jazz Journal

Award-winning composer John Finbury and singer-lyricist Thalma de Freitas team up for the first time on Sorte!

Their new album of Brazilian-flaired Latin Jazz songs was produced by Latin Grammy winner Emilio D. Miler, who assembled an all-star band, featuring Vitor Gonçalves on piano, Rhodes and accordion, John Patitucci on bass, Chico Pinheiro on guitar, Duduka Da Fonseca on drums, and Rogerio Boccato and the legendary Airto Moreira on percussion.  This joint artistic venture finds Ms. de Freitas’ natural talent seasoned by experience, evident in her wise and personal lyrics and exquisite vocal delivery.

The program opens with “Sorte!”, a joyful song about serendipity, and how “excellent mistakes can also mean luck”. Under the lush harmonies of Gonçalves’ Rhodes and Thalma’s sultry vocals, one can hear hints of another voice: it’s Airto Moreira’s “vocal percussion”, which playfully complements the rest of his instruments. The final conversation between Rhodes, guitar and vocals, serves as a new landmark for musical chemistry and interplay.

Filha” is the singer’s message to her daughter; brimming with the tender devotion of a parent watching their kid grow up, the lyrics elegantly float away from an admonitory tone, and present the different sides of kindness and self-worth some adults still ask of each other.  Mr. Patitucci takes the lead on two occasions, matching the emotional vocal delivery, by making his acoustic bass sing with a lyrical fluency that attests to his immense musical gifts and virtuosity.

A hard-hitting tune which dissolves into timelessness, only to build itself up again, “Ondas” offers a playful take, somewhere between scientific and esoteric, on the ways one’s mind, body and soul might be influenced by outside energies or “waves”.  The electric guitar solo by Chico Pinheiro is a perfect fit for the theme, driving the song’s energy to new heights.

Maio” was inspired by another stroke of serendipity: Thalma de Freitas and John Finbury share the same birthday in May. The lyrics wistfully expand on that sense of cycle, balance and rebirth.

A deep, joint sigh by accordion and voice, colored by Airto Moreira’s signature sounds of the Rainforest give way to “Oração”, undoubtedly the most meditative song on the album. John Patitucci’s is featured on the acoustic bass once again, before switching to electric for “Surrealismo Tropical”, which closes the program with an irresistible groove, and lyrics inspired by author Robin Kelley’s (“Freedom Dreams”) belief that “to make a better world, we must first imagine it”.

John Finbury shocked the Latin music scene in 2016, upon securing a Latin Grammy nomination in “Song Of The Year” for “A Chama Verde” from his album “Imáginario”, which featured Marcella Camargo on vocals and a band comprised of Boston’s best.   Though relatively new to Latin American audiences then, Finbury, a graduate of the Longy School of Music and Boston University, has been writing songs for over 40 years. The same ensemble recorded his follow-up album, “Pitanga”, in 2017.

Thalma de Freitas is a household name in her native Brazil, initially as an award-winning actress, who’s appeared in mainstream movies, television and theatre.  A multidisciplinary artist, Thalma became a solo singer in 1996 and has since released three albums under her name, as well as fourth one with the big band Orquestra Imperial. As a songwriter, she has collaborated with such artists as Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, João Donato, Céu and Kamasi Washington, among others.  Based in Los Angeles since 2012, she has become an important part of the local scene, while retaining her close ties with Brazil.

Sorte! provides a rich musical journey with deep, meaningful lyrics and wonderful playing that will appeal equally to Jazz and Brazilian music lovers, and essentially, to anyone willing to surrender their emotions to a good song.

Fresh off the success of Eight Track III (6 Weeks at #1 on the JazzWeek Radio Chart), Dave Stryker and his Eight Track Band decided to make a Christmas album for all the listeners who have enjoyed and supported the music. Dave says: “It’s crazy to be arranging and recording Christmas music in the middle of summer, but I think I was able to put my stamp on this batch of holiday favorites and make a pretty hip record along with the always-groovin’ Stefon Harris, Jared Gold, and McClenty Hunter.

We put our ‘Eight Track’ vibe on these tunes!” Stryker and the band do indeed put their stamp on Christmas songs old and new including more recent tunes such as Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas,” John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War is Over),” Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here,” and a bluesy take on “Blue Christmas.” They also put a new jazz spin on Christmas classics “What Child is This,” “God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen,” “Sleigh Ride,” “We Three Kings,” and “O Tannenbaum” (featuring Eight Track II’s Steve Nelson). Perhaps the most fun is “Soulful Frosty,” Stryker’s mash-up of Young-Holt Unlimited’s classic “Soulful Strut” and “Frosty the Snowman”! So enjoy Dave Stryker’s Eight Track Christmas, a hip and swingin’ update on these holiday classics.

Tis the season to celebrate with one of Jazz’s great emerging singers, Rebecca Angel, with a fresh re-imagining of the classic “SANTA BABY”

New York based singer, songwriter and performer Rebecca Angel spins a sultry jazz twist on “Santa Baby,” a playful yet sophisticated Christmas perennial first recorded by Eartha Kitt in 1953.

Produced by Jason Miles, who adds retro and bluesy touches via electric piano and Hammond B-3, the track features musicians who have been on many of Rebecca’s previous recordings, including electric guitarist Jonah Prendergast, acoustic bassist Reggie Washington and drummer Brian Dunne. The tune begins with her sensual scatting paired with Washington’s warm, intimate bass line and later features a lush flugelhorn solo by Rebecca’s father, popular jazz recording artist Dennis Angel.

Rebecca’s holiday-themed track provides a fresh, lighthearted balance following a year which began with her making great impact on contemporary jazz radio stations with “Thoughts and Prayers,” her socially conscious recording. She followed that with her self-reflective, breezy and bossa nova flavored single “Summer Song.” The videos for those tracks collectively received thousands of views on YouTube.

A vocal jazz graduate from Ithaca College, Rebecca has been performing regularly since her mid-teens at venues like the Watercolor Cafe in Larchmont, NY, My Father’s Place in Roslyn, NY and NYC hotspots Pangea, The Iridium, The Metropolitan Room and The Cutting Room. Rebecca released her critically acclaimed debut EP What We Had in 2018.

JOHN BASILE SILENT NIGHT
(StringTime Jazz Productions) Street Date: November 1, 2019

John Basile-Guitar

“Silent Night” Is An Inspired Collection Of Holiday Favorites Featuring
Guitarist John Basile Interpreting Timeless Melodies.

Utilizing His Electric And Nylon Guitars Combined With Digital MIDI Technology
Basile Has Created A Set That Will Be Sure To Become A Yuletide Favorite.

Throughout his career, John Basile has been greatly in-demand as a tasteful and melodic guitarist who has performed with many top singers and in intimate settings with major jazz artists. “Silent Night” is a bit different. Basile uses MIDI guitar technology to create colorful textures against “live” jazz guitar improvisations to create an engagingly fresh set of treatments of these holiday classics.

“It’s the best of both worlds as you combine the craft element of arranging and recording a predetermined digital accompaniment with true jazz guitar improvisation”.

But more important than how the music was performed is that the results provide an eclectic mix of melodic guitar improvisations destined to please. The guitarist picked out a dozen classic holiday themes and gave them treatments that explore a variety of moods, tempos and rhythms while paying respect to these classic themes.

Among the highlights are a fast waltz version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” the lush backing and thoughtful playing on a moody “Lulladay” (Basile’s original) that is a little reminiscent of Bill Evans’ “Peace Piece,” a joyful “Silver Bells,” the dreamlike and quietly emotional “Silent Night,” and the boppish guitar solo on “Toyland.”

“Baby Its Cold Outside” has two guitars interacting with each other as if they were taking a vocal duet, “What Child Is This” gets a fairly adventurous improvisation, and “Christmas Time Is Here” reflects the happiness and optimism of the holiday season. The subtle Latin rhythms on many of the selections casts a fresh light on these beloved songs.

“Silent Night” is just the latest accomplishment in John Basile’s productive career. Born in Boston, Basile began playing guitar when he was 12. He gained experience with R&B show bands and organ groups and then a three-month stint with vibraphonist Red Norvo led him into a career in straight ahead jazz. After studying at Berklee and the New England Conservatory of Music, he toured with an octet led by Count Basie and worked with such singers as Peggy Lee, Kay Starr, Nancy Harrow, Anita Gravine, Rosemary Clooney, Mark Murphy, and Tony Bennett, also performing with instrumentalists John Abercrombie, George Mraz, Tom Harrell, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker and Red Mitchell. All of those artists appreciated that John Basile had his own sound, he always swung, and he uplifted their music.

John Basile, who has had parallel careers as a radiology administrator, a professional boxing judge, and a music educator and clinician, keeps busy. He also runs the String Time Jazz label and the Stringtime Production Studio creating cues for television and films.
