Vocalist Nicolas Bearde
releases his 6th Jazz Album
In Celebration of Nat King Coles Centenary

shem.gif
San Francisco-based vocalist, Nicolas Bearde recently released “I Remember You: the Music of Nat King Cole”,  embellished by a group of outstanding musicians  to rave reviews from critics and jazz audiences worldwide.

“Silky, smooth jazz vocals…a superb tribute to “the King”
– Dick Metcalf of Contemporary Fusion

“These tracks cement Bearde’s place as an inheritor of Cole’s cool…he soothes and seduces…Bearde is a soulful sensation”
– Dan Bilawsky of All About Jazz

“Bearde’s warm and caramel-infused vocals offer fresh perspectives without losing any of the inherent romance and heartbreak of the Cole versions”
–  Bill Buckley of SoulandJazz, UK

“Creamy and debonair, Bearde’s renditions move the music of Nat Cole into the 21st century in time with Cole’s 100th Birthday celebration” – Blogger
 …Jazz2Love

Building on Bearde’s 2016 high charting album “ Invitation”, this new release, produced and arranged largely by Josh Nelson ( long time pianist for the late Natalie Cole )  celebrates Nat King Cole’s 100th birthday. Besides pianists Nelson and Peter Horvath,  Bearde teams with  bassists Alex Boneham and Dan Feiszli, drummers Dan Schnelle, Lorca Hart and Jason Lewis and special guest artist,  legendary tenor saxophonist, Eric Alexander, featured on 3 tracks, “That Sunday, That Summer”, “Funny (Not Much)” and “Thou Swell”.

Bearde is a master storyteller who breathes new life into Nat’s trove of enduring classics.  Though the ten songs on this project are associated with Cole, Nelson’s fresh arrangements and Bearde’s rich, warm voice and supple phrasing offer new takes on these timeless songs. There is a certain elegance to his singing that makes the songs on “I Remember You: the Music of Nat King Cole”, with their updated and hip arrangements, as fresh and evocative as when there were originally performed.

TRACKS: I Remember You, That Sunday, That Summer, Funny ( Not Much), Sweet Lorraine, L-O-V-E, Thou Swell, The Rules of the Road, Straighten up and Fly Right, Tenderly, I Wish You Love

The Mountain Chamber Jazz Ensemble is a hybrid ensemble consisting of a string section (violin, viola, cello, contrabass), a percussion section (drums set, percussionist, vibraphone and piano), a brass section (trombone and trumpet) and a woodwind section (clarinet, flute, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, alto saxophone). This ensemble utilizes elements from jazz, classical, rock, Latin and other music. The music is primarily acoustic and, while the group normally consists of 8 – 15 instrumentalists, the vocal aspect of the music is equally or even more important to the overall aesthetic of the ensemble. There is equal weight given to the two main facets of this music: the composed material and the improvisational sections. The textures vary greatly between compositions. When the strings predominate one immediately notes the classical music influence. When the horns solo (individually or in a group), there is a distinct jazz influence in the music. When the percussion section is featured the music can range from a Latin feel to a rock or funky feel.

The main soloists on the recording include Christian Howes (violin), Frank Southecorvo (saxes) and Michael Jefry Stevens (piano).

The Innocence of Spring

(Live at Hinton Hall)

STREET DATE:

August 1, 2019

LABEL:

ARC (Artists Recording Collective)

Recorded live at Middle Tennessee State University’s Hinton Hall, the release of The Innocence of Spring brings together two veterans of the US jazz scene in saxophonist Don Aliquo and pianist Michael Jefry Stevens.

In a live performance of raw improvisational clarity and sensitivity, inspiration from the jazz greats of years gone past is evident.

Not just in the modern, bebop, post-bop sound, but in the choice of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington tracks which enclose 7 original compositions.

On saxophone, Aliquo’s playing – “smooth as silk…with an unfailing feel for breath and phrasing” (All About Jazz) – combines delightfully with that of Michael Jefry Stevens, described by Cadence Jazz Magazine as “a sensitive pianist who ekes out droplets of sparkling gems or volumes of rushing waves…”

In an era where albums are often carefully constructed in a studio, this is a rare opportunity to hear two master improvisors at work live, complete with clapping, laughing & cheering from the audience at Hinton Hall.

PRESS QUOTES

afe21ec6-63e9-4005-943d-aaee431085ab.jpg

The music of Michael Jefry Stevens has been extensively recorded and reviewed.

Here are some quotes from various media and press:

“Stevens’ melodic sensibility shines through even the most free moments …

John Sharpe, NYC Jazz Record

“Stevens probably does his most profound work as a composer … compositions flirt with intertwining Jazz, Blues, so-called classical and band music without fully plunging into the Third Stream.”

Budd Kopman, All About Jazz

“The continuous changes of mood and texture, from rhapsodic to Dadaist to wistful, are stunning, and only broken when the listener has to change CDs …”

Nathan Turk, Signal to Noise

“Stevens’ compositions apply the brass in a few different ways … strategies that feel closer to classical experiments … puts the horns in a slow, reverent mood — think of the closing credits to a film, with some piano in a jazz “color” to brighten the scene … What’s surprising is the quietude that lingers …”

Wedge Radio, KZSU-FM, Stanford University

“Anyone remotely interested “creative improvised music” (aka jazz) that intersects with the Classical aesthetic should take the time to listen closely to pianist Michael Jefry Stevens’ latest release Brass Tactics. Stevens is a thinking man’s player mostly known for his work in The Fonda/Stevens Group (see Folk Five) and Conference Call, as well as leading his own groups …”

Budd Kopman, All About Jazz

CRITICAL ACCLAIM
for Denny Zeitlin’s 2019 Solo Piano CD recorded at Piedmont Piano Company: “Remembering Miles”

“On Remembering Miles Denny Zeitlin takes all the measures of what makes pianism great and relocates them to another rarefied realm… There is nothing contrived or attention-seeking about his approach… His traversal of this music is instantly spellbinding for all the right reasons… Everywhere Mr. Zeitlin strikes a compelling balance between volatility and elegance, while maintaining the intuitive sensibility of a jazz artist.” Raul da Gama, JazzdaGama

“…Remembering Miles represents the culmination of six decades of recorded jazz by Denny Zeitlin and you have to listen to it to truly understand how special it is in terms of the gift of the experience and genius that Denny brings to his music. Few pianists could have rendered the music of Miles Davis in a solo piano setting with such discrimination and heartfelt sincerity.”  Steven Cerra, Jazzprofiles.blogspot

“… An extraordinary recording career that began in 1963…with [this 2019 CD] Zeitlin taking these selected tunes on–and interpreting liberally–with just his piano and his own idiosyncratic reimaginings, you get an essence of two souls… Zeitlin is always startlingly virtuosic, and he is blessed with freewheeling improvisational elasticity… One of the most compelling and beautiful albums of Denny Zeitlin’s career.” Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz

“… Denny’s solo piano approach here is more to use the songs almost like loose backdrops for sonic poetry–these incredibly complex lines on the piano that are at once free and melodic, modern and meaningful… The album is as revolutionary as anything the pianist recorde decades back…” DustyGroove

“… By the end of Zeitlin’s recital, it is fair to marvel at the range of Davis’s music, of course, but also at the versatility of this pianist, a master of so many styles and approaches… Denny Zeitlin is a musician who never got stuck in one way of approaching the art…” Will Layman, PopMatters

“… Doing more with a solo piano than anyone else can, Zeitlin serves as an explosive and revelatory meeting of the minds that finds the octogenarian playing with the verve and smarts of a 20-year-old with an old soul. Another in a series of penultimate dates from the master.” Chris Spector, MidwestRecord

“… By reaping the best of both worlds and respecting Miles’ original portrayals of his songs and moving them forward with imaginative, dynamically fresh takes, Denny Zeitlin pays ultimate homage to Miles Davis. The Prince of Darkness was a master at recognizing other people’s good ideas and making them great; Zeitlin does the same while he’s Remembering Miles.”  S. Victor Aaron, SomethingElseReviews

“… Denny Zeitlin is a master. His love for this music comes shining through the notes he plays and how he rearranges the song so you hear them  anew… Splendid recording, sweet sound, and great music…”  Richard B. Kamins, StepTempest.blogspot

“Arriving on the jazz scene in the mid-60s while simultaneously practicing and teaching psychiatry, pianist Denny Zeitlin has consistently conducted his musical career on multiple tracks. He has played postbop as well as free improv, veered between electric and acoustic settings, drawn from classical composition and fusion, and played solo when he wasn’t leading duos, trios, or larger ensembles…all those influences resonate through the music heard on Remembering Miles…it all adds up to an intriguing collection of Miles’ musical stories, familiar but given refreshing new spins.”
Philip Booth, JazzTimes

“one of our most lyrical pianists, Denny Zeitlin delivers a tour de force solo performance, interpreting songs from the wide ranging Miles Davis songbook… Like his previous interpretation of Wayne Shorter material, this one’s a real treat and a moving tribute to an artist that bridged     wide gaps…”
 George W. Harris, JazzWeekly

“… Zeitlin’s a master at reconstructing melody, mood, and movement, making a meal out of nuance in the great artists of the times– himself included… Denny Zeitlin puts a lot of his own adventurous, thought-provoking spirit into each and every weird and wonderful note for quite a show, and quite an album.” Carol Banks Weber, FestivalPeak

Henry’s Rendition Creates Cause for Celebration and Launches a Four-Song Campaign ‘Inspiring Action Through Song’
“An artist who knows how to make a song her own.” – Billboard Magazine
“She can sell a power ballad as well as Whitney, Patti and Diana.” – Jazz Times
“A pop-soul superwoman…confidence and mastery”- The New York Times

OCTOBER 29, 2019– On Friday, November 8, 2019, jazz/soul vocalist Nicole Henry will release her first ever holiday single, Angels We Have Heard on High on Banister Records.  Appropriately reverent, and always uplifting, this track brings out the joy and amazement one would associate with witnessing the Christmas miracle. Recorded in Miami with the quartet with which Ms. Henry has performed and toured for over six years, this single will be the first in a series of four that are a part of her ‘Inspiring Action Through Song’ campaign of which the sole intent is to encourage listeners to consider performing acts of kindness and community.

In line with the meaning of ‘Angels We Have Heard on High,’ Ms. Henry’s request for “Action” is, “I would ask when anyone hears this song that they would proclaim, like angels did, about the ‘glorious’ things we see.  Too often we let everyday miracles go unrecognized or we let kind words left unspoken.  I think if we would give a little more light to the good things, we will go further as a human race.  Sharing gratitude or acknowledging beautiful happenings do not cost a thing…”

Matching this good intent and Nicole Henry’s sweet yet powerful vocals are instrumentalists and vocalists: Pete Wallace (piano); Eric England (bass); David Chiverton (drums); Aaron Lebos (guitar); Richard Bravo (percussion) and Leesa Richards (background vocals). This timeless traditional hymn has been transformed into a rousing anthem by the repetitive percussion, and the drone of the acoustic bass punctuates the somewhat tribal offering.  The background gospel vocals call heightened recognition to the heavenly presence of the angels.

The single will be available for download and streaming on all digital platforms. The second release of the four-song campaign is due February 2020.

Starting in 2001 as a full-time entertainer, Henry’s performances in Miami Beach earned her “Best Solo Musician 2002” by the Miami New Times. Her passionate, expressive voice has since established her as one of the most acclaimed jazz vocalists.  Since 2004, her six international CD releases have placed her on three TOP-10 jazz charts (US Billboard and HMV Japan); on four U.S. TOP-20 Jazz Week, CMJ and Smooth Jazz Radio charts; and garnered a 2013 Soul Train Award for “Best Traditional Jazz Performance.”  Now splitting her time between Miami Beach and New York City, Henry has headlined stages in 20 countries; recorded with musical greats such as Kirk Whalum, Julian Lage, Gerald Clayton and Gil Goldstein; performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, and Michael Feinstein; and been reviewed by The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, El Pais, Essence, The Japan Times, Jazz Times and more.

Retro-jazz Vocalist Laura Ainsworth Wraps Award-Winning Year with Japan Distro Deal

shem.gif

Retro-jazz vocalist Laura Ainsworth has made it her mission to revitalize and reshape 20th century cocktail/lounge jazz for the 21st century, and this was the year when her efforts began bearing fruit worldwide.

Her third album, “New Vintage,” scored multiple indie music awards and nominations, “Year’s Best” honors from top radio shows and podcasts such as “Cocktail Nation,” a profile in Downbeat, and a performance on TBN’s “Huckabee” series. On November 9th, she’ll host the pre-show for the Artists Music Guild Heritage Awards at historic Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte, NC, and is again nominated in two categories.  This follows her unprecedented sweep of last year’s AMG Awards, hosted by Thelma Houston. Ainsworth admits even she was stunned to win for Album, Video and Female Vocalist of the Year:

“Cocktail jazz is a niche of a niche, and I was up against much more commercial genres, such as country and gospel. But the AMGs are chosen by industry pros based solely on the quality of music submitted, not fame or major label backing. I never expected to win, so I didn’t prepare an acceptance speech, much less three! By the third win, I was just babbling that I was thrilled people like old school jazz this much, and I thanked Julie London.”

Ainsworth also spread her fresh take on retro jazz to new markets in 2019, landing a distribution deal in Japan for her dream project, a best-of vinyl LP, “Top Shelf,” after scoring rave reviews and press in several major Japanese jazz magazines.  She said, “In Japan, there are many fans of this kind of music, and great musicians keeping it alive and growing.  I can’t wait to perform there with them.”

This kind of music is literally in her DNA.  Her late father, Billy Ainsworth (from whom she inherited her perfect pitch), was a sax and clarinet prodigy hired at age 17 by Tommy Dorsey in the waning big band days. Years later, she grew up watching him lead commercial jingle singing sessions by day and back showroom legends such as Tony Bennett and Mel Torme by night.

With three albums so far on her own Eclectus Records label (“Keep It To Yourself,”  and “New Vintage”, she has amassed worldwide airplay and glowing reviews for her pre-bop vocal style and smooth, three-octave voice that’s drawn comparisons to early Rosemary Clooney and Dinah Shore (the Dallas Voice described it as “a satiny ribbon that seems to flow as an uninterrupted river of downbeats.”) All her albums are created with her longtime musical partner, jazz pianist/arranger/producer Brian Piper, and feature some of the top jazz players in North Texas.

Ainsworth’s stock in trade is shaking up a cocktail of old and new styles to blow the dust off of standards and give new life to long-forgotten gems, like the early Frank Loesser song, “That’s How I Got My Start,” that kicks off “New Vintage” (and won the AMG Award for its film noir-inspired video.) She also gave the Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer standard “Out of This World” an exotica makeover, and turned an outdated ‘70s blues/rock tune by Shel Silverstein into “I Once Knew a Fella,” a hilarious and sexy female empowerment romp with a wild sax-led arrangement inspired by her dad’s former bandmate, Sam Butera of Louis Prima/Vegas lounge fame.

Rather than replicating old styles verbatim (“It was done perfectly the first time, so what’s the point?”), Ainsworth is inspired by the classic 1950s albums in which Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald did their own unique, then-contemporary reinventions of old tunes from the ‘20s and ‘30s. She’s also started recording her own compositions, like the award-nominated “The Man I Love Is Gone.” She said, “The highest praise is when someone mistakes it for one of the lost 1940s-‘50s songs I usually record.”

One of her AMG nominations this year is for Video of the Year for “Where Did the Magic Go,” from “New Vintage,” a song originally recorded by Tony Bennett as a nostalgic look back at the entertainment era he’d lived through, of Ellington and Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Fred Astaire. Ainsworth transformed it into a younger singer’s longing for a return to that era of grace, wit and sophistication.

She said, “I believe that right now, people of all ages desperately need a shot of ‘new vintage’ to bring back elegance and romance. I consider that song my mission statement!”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Jazz Album from Trumpeter/Composer Jeff Lofton
Includes notables Dr. James Polk, Carolyn Wonderland and Murali Coryell

AUSTIN, TX – Austin, Texas-based trumpeter/composer Jeff Lofton recently released his new album, Jericho, to rave reviews. “Lofton’s dedication to finding the right textures is a joy to listen to,” said Jim Olin, critic for All About Jazz, “His trumpet playing on Jericho is sensational.” Stacey Zering of INK 19 added that “Jericho is among the year’s finest jazz releases. I could listen to his trumpet all day.”

A Grammy member and two-time SXSW Austin Music Awards winner, Lofton offers a diverse style, impressing audiences and critics with his ability to easily swing from styles as eclectic as neo-soul, jazz, urban, and R&B.

On this LP, Lofton gives the audience a sample of his creativity and dynamic trumpet style throughout the nine studio recordings. He reveals the more mellow side of his playing, and showcases a really high degree of articulation with his performances.

Because of these stunning dynamics, Lofton’s trumpet playing is as expressive as a human voice, with a unique story to tell from the candle-lit vibes of “What a Little Moonlight Can Do” to the sensuality of tracks like “Rose.”

The album features Jeff Lofton, trumpeter and producer, and includes Dr. James Polk (pianos, organ), Carolyn Wonderland (vocals, guitar), Murali Coryell (vocals, guitar), Glenn Schuetz (bass), Ryan Bowen (bass), Steven Mankenberg (drums), Terrence McDaniel (drums) and Ernie Durawa (drums).

Lofton was featured in Japanese Airlines magazine, and as an American Icon in a national ad campaign for Macy’s. He opened TEDxAustin in 2012 accompanied by pianist and composer Graham Reynolds, and was voted Best Horn Player 2013 – 2014 and Best Jazz Band 2010 – 2011 at the Austin Music Awards during SXSW. January 15, 2009, was named “Jeff Lofton Day” by the City of Austin; and he was inducted into the Texas Music Museum.

Dr. Polk is the former musical director for Ray Charles, and is associated with the Dr. James Polk Academy of Arts and Technology and the Austin Jazz Workshop. He is also the organist for the award winning jazz blues ensemble, Church on Monday.

Wonderland is touring with John Mayall, while continuing to write songs that have gained the attention of such notables as Bob Dylan. She appeared on Austin City Limits, played with Bonnie Raitt, and toured with Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter.

Son of jazz-rock fusion guitar legend Larry Coryell and author/actress Julie Coryell, contemporary soul blues artist Coryell grew up surrounded by great music – by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and Carlos Santana. In addition to performing with his own group, Coryell has toured as a featured artist with award-winning blues artist Joe Louis Walker, saxophonist Bill Evans and his father.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN
from Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas!
It’s that spooky time of year…. so get ready to enjoy the runaway Halloween hit  The House is Haunted”  which was featured on BBC Radio  and was inspired by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, featuring Chicago Sax Maestro Eric Schneider    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quc8s9SLZTY

It’s been an exciting Autumn for the band so far, and they are finishing their new recording “Blue Train”  for release in early 2020, with special guests including harmonica maestro Howard Levy  and Austin TX fiddle player Javier Chaparro

Three recently released singles featuring Scott Yanow, Javier and Howard have been featured on BBC Radio,  Dublin FM  this summer and  the band has had airplay on over 1,000 radio stations internationally  including far away places like New Zealand, Scotland, Nova Scotia, Alaska and even a station in Iceland!  The band was also just nominated this year for “Best Western Swing Band” and “Best Western Swing Singer” by the Academy of Western Artists   You can listen to and download all of the recent singles on itunes, Amazon, CD Baby, or at their
Bandcamp page https://susiebluelonesomefellas.bandcamp.com/

And the most  fun thing that has happened this season is that Susie Blue’s – aka Solitaire Miles –  portrait of Stephen Colbert was featured last Friday on the Late Show as part of their Fan Art Friday!!!  Miles, who also works as a professional illustrator,  submitted her watercolor and colored pencil sketch of Stephen to the show and was so honored  that they liked it and put it up for the Friday night feature.  You can see the original hand painted portrait below.

Stay tuned for more information about the release of their new album in early 2020!

Susie Blue & The Lonesome Fellas Presents Cowboy Jazz At It’s Finest On Their New Single “Spadella”

Hey Western Swing Lovers, Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas has a frolicking NEW SINGLE, and it’s Cowboy Jazz at it’s finest! There is no swooning girl vocal on this one – it’s the bands first instrumental featuring an original tune written by the infamous Western Swing bandleader Spade Cooley.

The word “Spadella” could either be taken from his name, or it is a conjugation of the Italian word “Spadellare” which means “to cook”.   It could also refer to a genus of planktonic marine animals (phylum Chaetognatha) that includes arrow worms. It is  doubtful that Spade would have written this song with worms in mind, but you never know with Spade…  At any rate, it is romping instrumental, and since it’s an uptempo piece one would think that he meant  the band was COOKIN’!!!

It features Javier Chaparro who is sizzlin’ on the fiddle,  Don Stille who is smokin’ on accordion and  guitarist and Fellas musical director Neal Alger who led the band in this rhapsodic ditty.  Bassist Chris Bernhardt and drummer Phil Gratteau keep the tempo frisky and you will be breathless by the end of this 3 minute musical tempest!

You can listen and download the single HERE

The new single has just been put into rotation by BBC Radio.

A former NASA artist, she has an asteroid named in her honor by the International Astronomical Union (asteroid: 6083janeirabloom). Her trio Cd “Early Americans” featuring Mark Helias and drummer Bobby Previte won a 2018 Grammy for Best Surround Sound Album and all her all-ballads release “Sixteen Sunsets” featuring pianist Dominic Fallacaro was cited as one of the top ten releases by NPR. Don’t miss these extraordinary musicians for this special one-time event.

Grego Applegate Edwards

– Gene Seymour

www.theavalonlounge.com

Award winning soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom brings her Early Americans Trio with long-time bandmates Bobby Previte and Mark Helias to the Avalon Lounge for the first time. With over 50 years of shared musical history together this trio has something special to say. “Playing in threes” has always held a special fascination for jazz improvisers. It holds out the possibility that something can always be slightly off balance and that’s just what fires the imagination of players like these. The trio’s Early Americans release won the 2018 Grammy award for best surround sound album. Bloom’s been leading bands into new creative territory for over 40 years bringing her lyrical and provocative music to venues as diverse as the Kennedy Center and the National Air & Space Museum’s Einstein Planetarium.  Helias and Previte, mature composer/ bandleaders in their own right with years of recording and live performance experience add depth and resonance to every spontaneous choice they make. Don’t miss these fearless American originals for an evening of high wire improvisation over the groove.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM
for Denny Zeitlin’s 2019 Solo Piano CD recorded at Piedmont Piano Company:
“Remembering Miles”

“… Denny’s solo piano approach here is more to use the songs almost like loose backdrops for sonic poetry–these incredibly complex lines on the piano that are at once free and melodic, modern and meaningful… The album is as revolutionary as anything the pianist recorded                decades back…” DustyGroove

“… By the end of Zeitlin’s recital, it is fair to marvel at the range of Davis’s music, of course, but also at the versatility of this pianist, a master of so many styles and approaches… Denny Zeitlin is a musician who never got stuck in one way of approaching the art…”
Will Layman, PopMatters

He has played postbop as well as free improv, veered between electric and acoustic settings, drawn from classical composition and fusion, and played solo when he wasn’t leading duos, trios, or larger ensembles…all those influences resonate through the music heard on Remembering Miles…it all adds up to an intriguing collection of Miles’ musical stories, familiar but given refreshing new spins.”  Philip Booth, JazzTimes

“one of our most lyrical pianists, Denny Zeitlin delivers a tour de force solo performance, interpreting songs from the wide ranging Miles Davis songbook… Like his previous interpretation of Wayne Shorter material, this one’s a real treat and a moving tribute to an artist that bridged     wide gaps…”  George W.

The result is a complex, but gripping, continuous ensemble performance of what the liner notes call “28 staged scenes,” tracked in five sections… Sudden unisons, processional marches, fiercely swinging passages and improvisatory features for the band loom from Hwang’s carefully-scored explorations of texture. Both the instrumentation and the material unite west and east, reflecting Hwang’s Asian American heritage. – John Sharpe, All About Jazz

…the impassioned interactions among unorthodox instrumental combinations demonstrate how a collective ideology can transcend apparent differences… By varying arrangements, Hwang implies an array of cinematic scenarios that equate with different states of mind. While many artists would compose a finale of harmonic resolution, Hwang remains steadfast, driving the point home by sonically suggesting that the lingering effects of violence never abate, nor serve any greater purpose. If there is any hope to be found here, it is in the perseverance of the human spirit. – Troy Collins, Point of Departure

Violinist, composer Jason Kao Hwang and many of his band-mates are among the leading exponents of the new jazz, where disparate genres coalesce, often in seamless fashion to nurture our imaginative inclinations in such a way that standard idioms and classifications go by the wayside… And Daley aims for the stars during his fierce, super-speed solo on “Declarations,” underscored by Hwang’s twirling lines and the ensemble’s impassioned statements and simmering narratives. Overall, it’s a striking presentation that may take two or three listens to fully digest. – Glen Astarita, All About Jazz

Around the turn of the millenium, the humanitarian crisis through which we are passing tipped a threshold: climate refugees began to outpace war refugees. Some 25 million were displaced in 1999 due to famine, drought, and torrential storms. So enters Afro Yaqui Music Collective’s debut album, Mirror Butterfly: the Migrant Liberation Movement Suite,  which dramatizes and musicalizes years of interviews and movement building with environmental and ecosocialist activists in Mexico, Syria, Kurdistan, and Tanzania. A 25-piece postcolonial big band delivers three portrait arias, woven in what poetic playwright Ruth Margraff calls “vocal art,” all accompanied by martial arts Afro-Asian choreography (Peggy Myo-Young Choy). The result been hailed as a “praise-song to the wretched of the Earth.” (Marcus Rediker, author, The Slave Ship) The staged work has travelled both activist and performing arts spaces: it has been presented at the Kennedy Center in DC, at the Mesopotamian Water Forum in Iraq, at the New Hazlett Theater in Pittsburgh (where it was incubated) and now, is available in this album  form–a global siren call for a new world where many worlds fit.
Dozens of artists contributed to this production whose influences span four continents. Jin Yang (of Silk Road) is featured on pipa in an East-West string quartet; Hugo Cruz (formerly of Síntesis) is featured on congas, bata drums and timbales in a pan-African rhythm section; a saxophone quartet, featuring Ben Opie and Patrick Breiner (Battle Trance) and a six piece choir (led by soprano and co-bandleader Gizelxanath Rodriguez) trade rounds. The music, written by baritone saxophonist Ben Barson, defies expectation, reimagining the past four decades of jazz innovation from Julius Hemphill to Fred Ho. Barson, in fact, is the heir of Fred’s beloved instrument. Barson’s polyphonic, polyrhythmic approach is meant to communicate the vibrant diversity of the migrant experience. Chromatic and seductively jagged choral harmonies, Afro-Asian orchestration, lush voicings by the saxes, all thwart destructive primitivist cliches. Infectious grooves with 4½, 5, and 15 beats per measure formidably defy the oppressive geometry of western modernity.
“With wide-eyed zeal, Afro Yaqui Music Collective delivers a dynamic new opera with Mirror Butterfly — a work that merges indigenous musics and movement styles with the more Western traditions of jazz, funk, and hip-hop. The results are thrilling, head-bob-worthy, and deep. The band grooves and plays like a unit. On its own, the music requires some processing and unpacking. It begs for repeat listens, and would be a worthy addition to anyone’s record shelf.” –David Bernado, Recital
“[W]illing to go where no one had before… Barson brings a sense of adventurousness to his own music and to the band he co-leads with his wife, Gizelxanath Rodriguez: the Afro Yaqui Music Collective.” — Harry Funk, the Mt. Lebanon Almanac.

The Afro Yaqui Music Collective is nothing short of pure, uncut sonic radical love.  These extraordinary artists have returned this thing called ‘jazz’ back to its real roots—to the earth, to the sky, to the women who produced and protected a people’s culture. Ben Barson, Gizelxanath Rodriguez, and the crew have committed to making liberation music—which is to say, music without borders or boundaries; future music from the well of the past that’s always on time; joyful music that swings and sings and sometimes stings but always keeps us dancing toward freedom. Follow them. Don’t miss them. An encounter with the Afro Yaqui Music Collective may be the most inspiring musical experience of your life.”

– Robin D. G. Kelley, author of
Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original

FAST HEART  is up for 3 categories:

Best Gospel Song/ Performance

 Best New Artist

If you are a voting member, thank you for considering Deb Bowman’s Fast Heart! Remember you can download or stream online everywhere. Check Deb’s EPK here:

Downbeat by Jon Ross

“Her connections to these personal tunes is visceral and immediate… she takes on a chameleon-like delivery, changing her vocal approach and grain as the songs ebb and flow. She belts it out on slow, introspective ballads; her vocals skips along on uptempo tunes. Gospel is in Bowman’s musical DNA, too, and “Shelter Me From The Storm” is a stunning closer. Replete with a choir and wailing Hammond B-3, Bowman is nearly perfect at this speed”

JazzWeekly by George Harris

“Some organic soul has her in an earnest “Where Can We Go” and she digs deep on a hip reading of Herbie Hancock’s “Butterfly.” Best of all are the intimate piano duets, with Bowman stretching over the chanson “La Vie En Rose” and a whimsical “Crazy He Calls Me.” Heart and voice on sleeve.”

Midwest Record by Chris Spector

“A jazz thrush with a rich, warm voice..Tasty stuff from a pro that’s mastered many entertainment disciplines, you really can’t go wrong with her long overdue second set.”

Contemporary Fusion Reviews by Dick Metcalf

“Refreshing multi-talented jazz vocalist Deb Bowman will (easily) capture your heart in only the first few bars of her new release… Her soulful rendition of “Georgia On My Mind” will make you a believer in all those talents…superb.”

Calabria Foti FOR YOUR GRAMMY CONSIDERATION

Calabria Foti FOR YOUR GRAMMY CONSIDERATION<!–

In her 4th album release, vocalist/violinist Calabria Foti  wanted  to make a record like her musical heroes Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, and Nat “King” Cole did back in the day; that is, with a big orchestra and legendary arrangers on the podium in an iconic Hollywood recording studio.

Calabria Foti displays her talents as violin soloist, scat singer, songwriter, and one of the finest storytellers of our time. Prelude To A Kiss is replete with grand, sweeping orchestrations from celebrated arrangers, and small band swingers featuring a stellar ensemble of musical greats.

Ralph Alessi Imaginary Friends

Best Jazz Instrumental Album

ECM 2629

shem.gif

GRAMMY Awards® Voters, find and vote for Ralph Alessi  in the BEST INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ ALBUM for his deeply poetic recording Imaginary Friends (which features an elite quintet of Ravi Coltrane, Andy Milne, Drew Gress and Mark Ferber). This album has been called “One of the most savory records of the year” by New York City Jazz Record and  “Alessi’s best album yet for ECM” by The Guardian.  In particular, this recording captures  the deep musical history of Mr. Alessi and Mr. Coltrane…. “The musical bond between Alessi and Coltrane is arguably developing into a rapport on par with the highest echelon of trumpet/tenor combinations.” Jazz Times

Born in San Francisco, CA March 5, 1963, Ralph Alessi is from a long lineage of musicians. His grandfather Joseph (1876-?) was co-principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and his father Joseph II (1915-2004) played trumpet in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and New York Symphony, and cornet in Edwin Franko Goldman’s band. Ralph’s mother sang with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, and his younger brother Joseph III is principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic.
Ralph Alessi began playing the trumpet at age six under the guidance of his father. He attended the California Institute for the Arts where he studied
with Charlie Haden and James Newton. Alessi received a bachelor of music degree in jazz trumpet, and a master’s degree in jazz bass.
Alessi moved to New York City in 1991. During the past 20 years he has performed or recorded with Fred Hersch, Jason Moran,Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Bill Frisell, Uri Caine, Tim Berne, Drew Gress, Don Byron, Dafnis Prieto, Brad Shepik, Scott Colley, Michael Cain, James Carney,   the Sam Rivers big band, among others. Jazz Times magazine says Alessi has “drop-dead trumpet chops” and calls his music “as clean and airy and sophisticated and disciplined as post-modern progressive jazz gets.”

As leader, Alessi has released several acclaimed albums including Hissy Fit (his debut album in 1999 on the Love Slave label), Open Season (RKM), Look (Between the Lines), This Against That (RKM) Vice and Virtue (RKM) , Cognitive Dissonance (CAMjazz), Wiry Strong (CleanFeed), Only Many (CAMjazz), Baida (ECM),  Quiver (ECM) and Imaginary Friends (ECM). He has taught full-time at the Eastman School of Music and University of Nevada-Reno Music and is a visiting professor at the Accademia Nazionale del Jazz in Siena, Italy. He is founder and director of Brooklyn’s School for Improvisational Music (SIM).

(Recorded live at the Queens Hall, Edinburgh. Released 26th January 2019)

A sparkling, new, jazz version of Prokofieff’s ‘Peter and the Wolf’ by the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) is among the entries in 62nd Grammys. This innovative work features original arrangements, lively orchestrations, and musically descriptive passages. Listen out particularly for the great ‘Triumphal Parade’, which vividly celebrates the capture of the wolf.

Smith’s version of Prokofieff’s Peter and the Wolf is designed to introduce young people to a jazz orchestra, yet it remains true to the original premise of the piece. Particular instruments are allocated to each character in the story, while Prokofieff’s wonderful imagery is both preserved and thematically developed. The narrative energy of ‘Peter and the Wolf’ is uniquely presented on this album in vibrant Scots language with evocative music from an award-winning jazz ensemble.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) is considered by many to be one of Europe’s foremost contemporary big bands.

Founder/Director Tommy Smith established the SNJO in 1995 as a not-for-profit organization with a crystal clear artistic vision and core values of versatility, discipline, and expression. The SNJO is dedicated to promoting jazz as a pre-eminent art form through performances, original compositions, recordings, and educational outreach programs. This commitment extends to the task of developing promising young jazz musicians through the ranks of The Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra.

It should, therefore, come as no surprise that many of the leading lights in world jazz have enthusiastically shared the stage with the SNJO. Artists like Cleo Laine, John ScofieldGary BurtonBobby Watson, Mike Stern, David Liebman, Dave LiebmanJoe LovanoBill Evans, Kenny Wheeler, Gary Novak, Arild AndersenPeter ErskineKurt EllingMakoto Ozone, Maria Schnieder, Benny Golson, Joe Locke, Bob Mintzer, and Randy Brecker have all joined the orchestra to explore virtually every room in the house of the jazz.

The SNJO repertoire has included re-imaginings of works by the great, the good and the gigantic, including Weather Report, Parker, Brubeck, Herman, Rich, Strayhorn, Goodman, Kenton, Basie, Gillespie, Mingus, Corea, Monk, Waller, Jobim, Metheny, Shorter, Mozart, St. Saens, Miles and Coltrane. They have also recorded vivid interpretations of Gershwin and Ellington to rave reviews, alongside a remarkable re-reading of Miles Ahead, an ECM-tinted set on Celebration and Tommy Smith’s suites, Torah, World of the Gods, Planet Wave, Beauty & the Beast, and Spirit of Light. The SNJO has also built a growing library of original compositions underpinned by a deep understanding and appreciation of improvisation.

Brazilian singer/songwriter Carla Hassett at long-last embraces Bossa Nova on her latest single, Sempra Odara

Sempre Odara
(Carla Hassett official music video)

When Burl Audio invited singer-songwriter Carla Hassett to record the 1961 bossa nova tune, “Adriana” (by Roberto Menescal) at the iconic EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, she hesitated to reconnect with the 60-year old genre. From years of playing Brazilian music in clubs, she felt tired of the demands to play the same few Jobim classics that Americans know and love. Carla says she “felt the genre had been diminished to a cliché,” and longed to introduce a deeper level of Brazilian music to her audiences. But Burl Audio (who manufactures high end recording gear) were eager to capture the authentic swing of bossa nova. “I asked the folks at Burl to dig deep into the barrel, and when they came up with ‘Adriana,’ I knew we were going to make a very cool record.” Burl Audio owner and chief designer, Rich Williams, carefully curated the track for Carla and her band for its exquisite groove in 5/4 meter, and intimate vocal style. With Carla on guitar and vocals, bass and drums borrowed from Sergio Mendes’s band, piano, percussion, horns and flute, the song came alive in the very room where Sinatra once recorded. After tracking “Adriana,” Carla and the band were given extra studio time. Eager to keep the vibe going, Carla reached for two of her own songs that echoed the spirit of Antonio Carlos Jobim. From her studio, Carla then completed the tracking and mixed the two additional tracks, while “Adriana” stayed in Burl Audio’s hands, then headed straight to vinyl. “Sempre Odara” is the first of the two additional songs recorded that night. With Burl Audio’s technology, highly skilled musicians, and an iconic studio, the recording session celebrated the perfect pairing of musical and technological excellence, resulting in a pure expression of Brazilian bliss.

The word “odara” stems from the Yoruba term for “beauty,” in the sense that it is both a physical state, and a state of well-being. In the Brazilian candomblé tradition, “odara” takes on a deeper meaning of peace, tranquility, and infinite positivity. The song “Sempre Odara” (always odara), shines a light on the beautiful state of mind that infinite love can evoke, even when it goes unanswered, and the desire to stay in that elusive state for always.

There’s no mystery to the source of Carla’s musical identity. The São Paulo-born singer-songwriter grew up in a Brazilian community in Chicago, studying piano and guitar from an early age, and writing and recording her own tunes on her yellow Panasonic tape recorder before she hit her teens. Besides absorbing the Brazilian music her parents and extended family enjoyed listening to at home, Hassett soaked up rock, blues, funk and all of the other sounds popular in the Windy City. It wasn’t long before she turned pro, playing and singing with the top Chicago bands of the day, and lending her voice to jingles for national advertising campaigns.

Carla moved to Los Angeles and built a career singing backup on tour and in the recording studio with the likes of Billy Idol, Sergio Mendes, Gino Vannelli, actor/musician Gary Sinise, Grammy award-winning soul legend Solomon Burke, Flora Purim and Airto Moreira, Mike Patton, and a bevy of Latin music superstars. Carla backed up Lila Downs, Natalie Cole, and Caetano Veloso when he was honored at the Latin Grammys. Hassett also lent her voice to the movie soundtracks of RioRio 2, Netflix’s Like Father, and Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle.

Carla studied at Chicago’s Sherwood Conservatory and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music. She is now on the commercial music faculty at California State University, Los Angeles. Among her influences, Carla cites Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, Jorge Ben Jor, her “patron saint” Carmen Miranda, as well as Aretha Franklin, Freddy Mercury, and Amy Winehouse.

On her previous album, +Blue, Carla explored the meaning of “home” and the complexities of growing up between two countries and cultures, stylistically expressed through tropicalia and samba. But as the great Freddy Mercury once said, “give the people what they want,” and on “Sempre Odara,” Carla does just that by embracing the understated power and beauty of her home’s most celebrated music–bossa nova.

Pianist Eyran Katsenelenbogen Releases Highly Anticipated New Solo Album, Outstandards

shem.gif
For immediate Release:

Eyran Katsenelenbogen 2019 Outstandards CD Release

Attention:
Jazz Broadcast and Printed Media
Street Date: December 5, 2019

Boston, MA – September 19, 2019 – Eyran Records announces the release of master jazz pianist Eyran Katsenelenbogen’s highly anticipated new solo album, Outstandards

“I would like to thank the wonderful students at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School for inspiring many of the pieces on Outstandards and their arrangements.” — Eyran Katsenelenbogen

In Outstandards, pianist Eyran Katsenelenbogen presents jazzy renditions of classical cornerstones such as “Für Elise” (Beethoven) and Mozart’s “Piano Sonata in C major” alongside jazz classics such as “Tea for Two” (Youmans / Caesar) and “Cheek to Cheek” (Berlin). Katsenelenbogen also revisits Chick Corea’s “Armando’s Rhumba,” which was released on his CD Solotude in 2005 and delivers an intimate performance of “Insensatez” (How Insensitive) (Jobim / De Moraes). Prior to their recording for the CD, all the pieces on Outstandards were performed extensively during Eyran’s concert tours in China in 2014 and 2016. The piece “Insensetaz” (How Insensitive) carries a special meaning for Katsenelenbogen and is dedicated it to his parents, in gratitude for their eternal love.

Praise for Eyran Katsenelenbogen

“Perhaps Katsenelenbogen is most in league with Art Tatum for this fact: he sets the bar towards which other pianists must strive.” — Jay Deshpande, All About Jazz

“He is a passionate man who feels deeply, and he has the talent to express those feelings through his playing. You can not help but be moved by his performance.” — Frank Rubolino, Cadence

“And the fact that, as on Outstandards, Eyran can arrange the most well known classical themes as stride or bebop without losing their essence further defines the term ‘virtuoso.'” — Andrea Canter, Jazz Police

SAMMY FIGUEROA &
HIS LATIN JAZZ EXPLOSION
TO TOUR THE MIDWEST
WITH SUPPORT FROM A
JAZZ ROAD TOURING GRANT

shem.gif
Grammy Nominees Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion will be heating up the American Midwest the second week of October.   This Miami-based band, which displays the virtuosity and excitement of players from Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Cuba, returns to the Midwest for the first time in eight years.  The tour will hit venues in Chicago, Cleveland and Ann Arbor.

Sammy will be joined by Venezuelan virtuosos Silvano Monasterios (on piano) and Gabriel Vivas (on bass), the primary composer/arrangers and musical directors for the band.  Drummer Ludwig Afonso(Richard Bona, Gonzalo Rubalcaba), trumpet player Cisco Dimas and saxophonist John Michalak complete the ensemble, all representing the very highest level of excellence in musicianship as accompaniment to Sammy’s always exciting percussion and ebullient personality. The band will mainly play original music with the addition of some music by Hermeto Pascual and Mongo Santamaria.

Sammy, along with his partner Rachel Faro, will also be presenting two community-based workshops entitled “One World, Many Rhythms”, one in Chicago at the Old Town School of Folk Music and one in Ann Arbor, sponsored by A Brighter Way, which provides support to formerly incarcerated individuals as they transition back to society and to those in recovery from addiction.  These workshops are interactive and engaging, inspiring joy and togetherness.

This tour has been made possible with the support of Jazz Road, a national initiative of South Arts which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  Sammy and the band are deeply grateful for this support and look forward to greeting audiences in the Midwest.

Over 50 years ago, through a freak accident, Slide Hampton lost all of his original hand-written scores for his octet music. This recording features nine tracks of Slide’s octet music transcribed by Frank Basile

“I first had the privilege of working with and getting to know Slide Hampton in 2006 as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. At that time, Slide was the band’s conductor and front-man. I had always known Slide’s place as a member of jazz royalty had been cemented long ago, but being there with him first-hand brought into sharp focus what a true genius he is. His conducting, his trombone playing, and his arranging set the standard for countless musicians to strive for, however futile a task that may be.(Thank you, Slide!)”
