“This is what a jazz Christmas should be.” Mark Gilbert, Jazz Journal
“From subtle to sexy to swinging, Chris Pasin and friends shine a brilliant light on the best yuletide favorites.”
Jazz Global Beat
“The trumpeter and several collaborators, including pianist Armen Donelian, toggle between calm introspection and swinging heat as required for their treatments of the usual carols and secular songs.”
Frank John Hadley, Downbeat
“Baby It’s Cold Outside… is a shiny silver Christmas ornament, and a fine jazz album too. Dalton and Pasin make the title track into a dialogue rather than a song, like a snowbound Nichols and May.”
Michael Eck, Chronogram
“It’s been a while since I gave trumpeter/flugelhorn player Chris my “PICK” in issue # 158, and now he’s put together a seasonal album that stands out nicely as one of the most cheerful I’ve heard in many years (for those who have been reading us for a while, you’ll know already that I seldom review holiday albums). …. the title track, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside“,…that’s more than enough to let you know how HIP this coming holiday season is going to be… some great dialogue between Chris and vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell that will put you in the mood for the festivities!”
Rotcod Zzaj
“Here’s a holiday outing that should satisfy traditionalists and adventurous spirits alike, a true rarity… the scintillating Baby It’s Cold Outside.” David McGee, Deep Roots
“Baby It’s Cold Outside (Planet Arts – 301714) is a delightful Christmas album from trumpeter CHRIS PASIN. Pasin has enlisted a terrific group of musicians including pianist Armen Donelian, bassist Ira Coleman, drummer Jeff Siegel, bassist Rich Syracuse, guitarist Peter Einhorn and vocalist / producer Patricia Dalton Fennell, mixed them into a variety of combinations, and they have produced an eclectic 11-song program that holds your interest no matter the combination of players.”
Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz
“The highlight for me is the title cut, which has been turned into a two-way conversation between Patricia and Chris — I have heard many different versions of this song over the years, but this has to be the only one that oozes sex. Patricia often proves her vocal skills on other numbers, but here her spoken voice is like warm velvet and combined with the muted trumpet in the background and the laid-back feel of the arrangement makes this something quite extraordinary. Overall this is a beautifully conceived and performed album that is easy to listen to and totally enjoyable from start to end.” Gonzo Weekly
“Nothing gets music lovers in a celebrating mood like listening to their favorite carols, and this CD, Baby, It’s Cold Outside, delivers a whopping dose of holiday cheer. On 11 of the most-beloved sounds of the season, trumpeter Chris Pasin and friends show they have a real gift for making such familiar material their own, while maintaining the spirit and warmth that’s such a major part of the yuletide celebrations.”
Republic of Jazz
“Perhaps the most notable is the title track, a vocal duet between Pasin and Fennell where the traditional roles are reversed. They turn the lyrics into an overlapping conversation, and Fennell plays the seductress with elan.” Thomas Cunniffe, JazzHistoryOnline

TREASURY OF JEWISH CHRISTMAS SONGS
A Cool Jazz Tribute to the Jewish Songwriters
“Jake Ehrenreich sings these songs with easy pop-jazz panache, a slightly husky tone and casual swing that more than once evoke a younger Tony Bennett.”
George Kanzler Hot House Magazine December 2018
“Swings like a young Tony Bennett. Add Roger Kellaway and some solid jazzbos to the mix and you get this record that you‘d think is a one note joke but runs so much deeper into so much more.” Chris Spector Midwest Record
“You will wish Christmas came more than once a year. It’s just wonderful!” Alan & Marilyn Bergman Legendary Grammy/Oscar winning songwriters
“Jake Ehrenreich is a pleasant ringer for Tony Bennett and is ably supported by the trio of pianist Roger Kellaway…” Audrey Henkin The NYC Jazz Record
“A top class trio, with a singer whose voice has shades of Nat King Cole…” Ann Alex Bebop Spoken Here (England – Winner 2018 Parliamentary Jazz Awards)
“Ehrenreich’s swinging delivery is reminiscent of a modern-day Tony Bennett – a little rough around the edges – but full of sincerity and informed through study of the material. This well-conceived album acts as both warm holiday fare and as a tribute to the fine songwriters.” Thomas Cunniffe jazzhistoryonline.com
“I can’t think of a better Christmas present! Jake & Roger’s rendition truly brings the song to life.” Johnny Mandel Legendary Grammy / Oscar Winning Songwriter
“This is a fine collection, well sung, and would be a welcome addition to any library of Christmas CDs”. Joe Lang Jersey Jazz Magazine
“The album is a cool jazz delight. Ehrenreich has a vocal style not dissimilar to Tony Bennett, while Kellaway has an incredibly delicate and deft touch on piano. If anyone wants to hear some laid back swing, cool jazz versions of Christmas classics then this is what you need.” Kev Rowland housofprog.com
A Jewish child of Holocaust Survivors who incongruously grew up loving Christmas music, Jake first explored this theme in his hit Broadway show A Jew Grows in Brooklyn, where the New York Times raved “…a beautiful medley of Christmas Songs written by Jewish composers. Mr. Ehrenreich has a strong pleasant voice…” Now Jake teams up with Legendary Jazz pianist Roger Kellaway and his trio for a concert full of great music, behind the scenes stories and great fun. A unique way to spend the holiday.

Steve Turre Quintet One of the world’s preeminent Jazz innovators, trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre, has consistently won both the Readers’ and Critics’ polls in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazziz for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells). While attending Sacramento State University, he joined the Escovedo Brothers salsa band, which began his career-long involvement with that genre. In 1972, Steve Turre’s career picked up momentum when Ray Charles hired him to go on tour. A year later, Turre’s mentor Woody Shaw brought him into Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. After his tenure with Blakey, Turre went on to work with a diverse list of musicians from the Jazz, Latin, and pop worlds, including Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, J.J. Johnson, Herbie Hancock, Lester Bowie, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders, Horace Silver, Max Roach, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The latter introduced him to the seashell as an instrument. Soon after that, while touring in Mexico City with Woody Shaw, Turre’s relatives informed him that his ancestors similarly played the shells. Since then, Turre has incorporated seashells into his diverse musical style. In addition to performing as a member of the Saturday Night Live Band since 1984, Turre leads several different ensembles. Turre’s quartet and quintet provide a setting based in tradition and stretching the limits conceptually and stylistically. He has just released his latest CD, “The Very Thought Of You” and will feature some of this music with his Quintet at the Jazz Forum.

What we had

|
 |
Rebecca Angel’s voice makes the difference. With her refined charm, she gives the songs on What We Had the overwhelming splendor.
– Hans-Bernd Hülsmann www.smooth-jazz.de
Jason Miles’ work playing, producing, arranging, and guiding some terrific musicians in support of this must-hear chanteuse brings a real sense of warmth to the work. WHAT WE HAD is a real treat, and Rebecca Angel’s voice and writing are superb evidence of an artist with a very bright future ahead of them. –Chris Gibson Broadway World
Talented young singer Rebecca Angel has released her first EP the memorable “What We Had”, an innovative set of fresh and heartfelt music.
The 22 year-old vocalist has an appealing and captivating voice. Using jazz as her base to explore different grooves, she collaborated with Grammy-winning Jason Miles, who produced recordings of celebrity artists including Miles Davis, Grover Washington Jr., Luther Vandross, etc. Jason is producer and arranger of “What We Had”, her debut EP, Miles and other top-notch musicians accompany her with a variety of backgrounds that showcase her soothing and distinctive voice at its very best.
In addition to Miles’ keyboards, the six selections (plus two remixed performances) utilize such fine musicians as soprano-saxophonist Hailey Niswanger, guitarists Ricardo Silveira, Jonah Miles Prendergast and Christian Ver Halen, bassists James Genus, Reggie Washington and Adam Dorn, drummer Brian Dunne, percussionists Mino Cinelu and Cyro Baptista, cellist Sebastian Stoger, flugelhornist Dennis Angel and flutist Gottfred Stoger. Rebecca excels at singing heartfelt lyrics and showcases her innovative scatting.
Rebecca’s version of the rarely performed Hoagy Carmichael gem “Winter Moon” features interplay between the singer and Niswanger on saxophone, catchy Latin rhythms and a haunting melody.
Rebecca co-wrote the minor-toned and nostalgic “What We Had” with her father Dennis Angel and guitarist Prendergast, a celebratory look at the past.
The Brazilian vocalese “Agora Sim” puts the focus on her instrumental ability in unison with Jonah’s guitar.
“Feel Alive”, which was also co-written by Rebecca, is a superior pop tune that is both funky and infectious.
Leiber and Stoller’s “Stand By Me”, heard in both radio and electro mixes, has a tight bass-drum rhythm, dynamic keyboards, a bluesy vocal by Rebecca and some natural and creative scat-singing.
The program closes with the first-ever vocal recording of Marcos Valle’s 2005 instrumental hit “Jet Samba” which is given both a radio and an electronic Ipanema mix.
Rebecca Angel has loved music all of her life. She remembers her father introducing her to the recordings of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Elvis and the Beatles, Astrud Gilberto and Sade, all of whom became inspirations in her eclectic style. She graduated with a degree in Vocal Jazz Studies from Ithaca College and has performed at the Iridium, The Metropolitan Room and CaféNoctambulo in New York.
Rebecca Angel creates consistently memorable musical statements throughout “What We Had”, with her substantial talents, a very impressive debut.

Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.” Antonio Carlos Jobim
“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the most important Brazilian drummers ever. Combining brain, soul, deep knowledge of Brazilian styles, and American jazz, Duduka is unique and has created a musical genre that is called Samba-Jazz for the present and the future!” Claudio Roditi
“Duduka Da Fonseca has done for Brazilian jazz drumming, what Kenny Clarke had done for jazz drumming in America.” Dom Salvador
“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist
“Da Fonseca divulges a keen awareness of where Brazilian jazz has been and where it’s headed.” Todd Jenkins, DownBeat
“Drummer Da Fonseca perhaps the best Brazilian trap drummer of his generation, plays with uncommon mix of finesse and drive.” Mark Holston, Jazziz
“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira. He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.” THE NEW YORKER
“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”
Billy Hart
“Da Fonseca wasn’t the first to fuse the rhythmic patterns of Brazil’s samba and bossa nova with jazz language and mannerisms, but he’s done more with that combination than anybody before him” Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz
“In the blazing finale, Duduka proves touch also facilitates power, pushing the tune to a tidal surge, then unleashing a ripping solo that ramps the trio to a fireworks finale.
Spirited and intimate.” Jeff Potter, Modern Drummer
“The universal appeal of Brazilian jazz is how measured, melodic emotion is energized from within by subtle, invincible rhythm. Da Fonseca may be the best in the world at motivating and sustaining that special vital pulse.” Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes |
