Composer, arranger, and conductor, David Berger, is recognized internationally as a leading authority on the music of Duke Ellington and the Swing Era. Conductor and arranger for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra from its inception in 1988 through 1994, Berger has transcribed more than 750 full scores of classic recordings, including more than 500 works by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Several of these transcriptions in addition to a number of original arrangements are featured in last season’s Broadway hit, After Midnight.

Mr. Berger’s work with dance companies spans the last 40 years. He has arranged and conducted for Alvin Ailey, New York City Ballet and Dance Theater of Harlem. In 1996 Berger collaborated with choreographer Donald Byrd to create and tour the Harlem Nutcracker, a full-length two-hour dance piece that expands the Tchaikovsky/ Ellington/Strayhorn score into an American classic. The 15-piece band assembled to play this show has stayed together as the David Berger Jazz Orchestra. The DBJO has released 7 CDs and actively performs Berger’s music both in New York and on tours throughout the United States and Europe.

Berger has written music for symphony orchestras, television, Broadway shows (Sophisticated Ladies) and films (Cotton Club, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and The Great Debaters) and has composed and arranged for hundreds of jazz groups including Duke Ellington, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Quincy Jones and the WDR Big Band. He has also arranged for dozens of singers including Jon Hendricks, Betty Carter, Freda Payne, Natalie Cole, Rosemary Clooney, Madeleine Peyroux, Milt Grayson, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Susan Graham, Kathleen Battle, Jessye Norman and Mary Martin.

Berger resides in New York City where he is currently composing three musical comedy shows and was the arranger and musical director for the recent Broadway hit, Apollo Club Harlem (starring Maurice Hines, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Kevin Mahogany and Margot Bingham), as well as the perennial classic Ellington at Christmas (featuring Savion Glover, Norm Lewis, Keith David, Priscilla Baskerville and Lizz Wright).

For the past 3 years Berger has conceived, written, directed, arranged and conducted shows for the Detroit Jazz Festival. This past summer’s show was a tribute to the jazz artists that appeared at the Apollo Theater (like Sammy Davis, Jr., Billy Holiday and Ray Charles) and featured Ted Levy, Kevin Mahogany and Margot Bingham. Performed before a crowd of 10,000, A Night at the Apollo garnered rave reviews.

“My Heart Belongs to Satchmo” is Donnay’s ninth CD (now signed to Blujazz), a tribute to Louis Armstrong with her group, the Prohibition Mob Band. Her interest in roots music was inspired from the radio, performing with Dick Oxtot’s Golden Age Jazz Band, recording with legendary jazz producer Orrin Keepnews, researching lost and obscure material from the Jazz Age, and touring 10 ½ years as singer/percussionist with Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks.

“With her singularly enticing sound, few contemporary vocalists are as well suited to dustily vintage material as jazz-blues stylist Roberta Donnay. — Jazz Times

“Donnay’s voice could make any classic material sound wondrous and timeless, but the fact that she digs so deep into American musical history — makes “A Little Sugar” not only sweet, but a recording that will stand the test of time”. – All Music Guide

Performances—January 10, 17, and 24 (sets at 7:30 & 9:30) at Club 75 in January—AND the exhibition of His “Nocturne: The Noir City” photographs on the ground floor at the Bogardus Mansion.

Described as a “phoenix” creating “captivating music” in an upcoming review by enthusiastic listener and journalist Schaen Fox, Peter Leitch created his “New Life Orchestra” when he could no longer play the guitar after a long and storied career as a jazz guitarist. Cancer treatments had destroyed the nerve plexus in his left arm—but NOT his need to create music.  The debut sets of this 14-piece orchestra performing the guitarist-turned-composer/arranger/director’s new works were more successful than he could have imagined. Sold out nights resulted in an invitation to do it all again!
Peter is gratified that the 14 members of the orchestra are committed to bringing his music to life. “I really appreciate the participation of these wonderful musicians,” he said. “Although I miss the ‘in the moment’ improvisational aspects of playing an instrument myself, not being able to do that now has allowed me to conceptualize music in a larger, more orchestral sense. At the same time, I realize the importance of integrating enough space into the music for these great soloists.”

They are:
Bill Mobley, Duane Eubanks: trumpets
Tim Harrison: flute
Steve Wilson: alto/soprano saxophone
Jed Levy: tenor saxophone/flute/alto flute
Carl Maraghi:  baritone saxophone/bass clarinet
Matt Haviland: trombone
Max Seigel: bass trombone
Phil Robson: guitar
Peter Zak: piano
Yoshi Waki: bass
Joe Strasser: drums/Jason Tieman: drums (alternate)
Chad Coe: acoustic guitar
Dennis James: arco bass

Upstairs from Club 75 Peter will mount “Nocturne: the Noir City,” a group of more than 30 black-and-white photographs of New York at night Peter took and printed over several years. His recent illness also ended his photographic activities but he has a significant body of work which has exhibited all over North America, including the work at Boguardus Mansion. “Nocturne” was last displayed in a one-man show at the Living Room Gallery at St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan in 2013. It will be on display starting January 10. Reception January 11, 6-8 pm.

Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 28 CD’s as a leader to date), co-leading The Stryker/Slagle Band, Blue To The Bone or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”

Dave Stryker was voted once again into the 2018 Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls. Besides his own 28 recordings Stryker has appeared as a sideman or producer on over 100 others. As a composer he has recorded and published over 130 original compositions. He is involved in passing it on, and was recently hired as the new Jazz Guitar instructor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

THE EBONY HILLBILLIES –
THE PREMIER AFRICAN-AMERICAN STRING BAND IN AMERICA!

From the street corners of Manhattan to the hallowed stages of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to TV appearances on the BBC and ABC’s “Good Morning America,” The Ebony Hillbillies are a true phenomenon, reviving the lost art form and American legacy of string band music for a whole new generation.

Continuing to bring a fresh urgency to the genre for a 21st Century world in need of some deep musical education, the dynamic ensemble – led by Henrique Prince (fiddle, vocals) with Norris Bennett (banjo, mountain dulcimer, guitar, vocals), Gloria Thomas Gassaway (on vocals and bones), acoustic bassist William “Salty Bill” Salter (3x-Grammy winning co-writer of legendary pop hits like “Where is the Love” and “Just The Two of Us”), Allanah Salter (shaker, vocals), Newman Taylor Baker/Ricky “Dirty Red” Gordon (washboard percussion) and A.R. on “cowboy” percussion kit – are releasing their latest full length album, 5 MILES FROM TOWN [EH MUSIC].

Infused with the Hillbillies’ trademark mix of pop, country, bluegrass, folk and jazz, the full length collection reflects a soulful, gritty and alternately funky, romantic and socially conscious place where toes are always tapping, percussion is slapping, fiddles are jamming, front porch chairs are rocking, banjos are plucking and voices are raised in determination and triumph.

Mixing lively instrumentals and vocals over the course of 11 tracks and 3 alternately playful and hard-hitting snippets/skits, the group performs everything from a down home fiddle jam (“Hog”), the gentle romantic cautionary tale “Fork in the Road” and an intimate cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” to the incisive social commentaries “Another Man Done Gone (Hands Up Don’t Shoot)” (about black men and police shootings) and “I’m on My Way To Brooklyn,” which rolls as a lighthearted NYC inspired spiritual until the end…and three gunshots.

The Ebony Hillbillies started out on the streets of Manhattan, but their vibe and influence has extended over the years to acclaimed live performances at legendary venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; appearances on the BBC, Good Morning America, NBC, CBS, etc., international music workshops and festivals, visual artist collaborations at museums (including The Whitney with phenom Kara Walker and The Smithsonian Museum), Guest school programs, Foot stomping and Hand-clapping Dance parties and more. In the digital era, they have sold thousands of hard copies of their four CDs – Sabrina’s Holiday, I Thought You Knew, Barefoot and Flying and 2015’s Slappin’ A Rabbit – Live! – at their shows and via their globally popular website, https://www.theebonyhillbillies.com/home

NEA Jazz Master Toshiko Akiyoshi & Lew Tabackin

Quartet

Toshiko Akiyoshi and reed virtuoso Lew Tabackin have been leading and performing in top jazz groups since the 1960’s. There are not enough superlatives to describe Toshiko Akiyoshi, a Japanese jazz pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader. She’s received fourteen Grammy Awards and has been awarded a lifetime honor as an NEA Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. Performing for over six decades, Akiyoshi is known for her challenging and full-textured arrangements that sometimes evoke her  homeland. Since her beginnings on the piano at age six, Akiyoshi has become the leader of her world-renowned big band often featuring Lew Tabackin,

Lew Tabackin is a tenor saxophonist and flutist with astonishing vision.  His electrifying flute playing is virtuosic, primordial, cross-cultural, and passionate. His distinctive tenor sax style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt changes of mood and tempo, and purposeful fervor, all in the service of showing the full range of possibilities of his instrument – melodically, rhythmically, and dynamically.

Akiyoshi was the first woman to win Best Arranger and Composer awards in Down Beat magazine’s annual Readers’ Poll.  Tabackin has been voted first place in Swing Journal Readers’ Poll four years in a row for his flute playing brilliance.

Pianist Helio Alves blends traditional Brazilian with Jazz sounds fluidly and with grace, collaborating with some of the foremost artists in the New York Metropolitan area. He is a top musician on the scene at many New York Jazz clubs, and has received uninterrupted praise throughout his career for his many musical collaborations. Singer Mafalda Minnozzi and guitarist Paul Ricci have broken musical ground in Brazil and Italy in a long running collaboration resulting in her notable solo career. Over time the freedom of their musical empathy overshadowed the usual larger band format resulting in a duo with its own unique language derived from both their Jazz and European upbringings and their extensive touring. Collectively they have recorded or performed with Milton Nascimento, Leny Andrade, Astrud Gilberto, Harold Vick, Sonny Fortune, Manolo Badrena, Guinga, Bebel Gilberto, Toquinho, Hugo Fattoruso, Bobby Sanabria, Dom Um Romao, André Mehmari, Roy Haynes, Harry Belafonte, Mike Clark and so many others.

Since forming the “eMPathia Jazz Duo” they have recorded 3 studio CDs, a vast library of online videos and have performed at major Jazz festivals in Europe and Latin America to critical acclaim and standing ovations from enthusiastic crowds. From the American Cole Porter, the Brazilian Jobim, from the french Piaf and Django to the Italian Morricone they integrate a command of so many styles that they not only have studied, but have also lived. Ricci’s experience mixing both Bossa and blues with jazz in a unique fingerpicking style led Gene Bertoncini to say ” from a guitarists’ point of view I`m amazed at the stuff he does harmonically and linearly all by himself” and NY Times Jazz critic John S. Wilson to write ” …guitarist Paul Ricci established a fresh basis for Lover Man with a fascinating unaccompanied guitar solo…”
Mafalda’s style is defined by her charismatic stage presence, vocal range and versatile timbral palette that blurs the line between singer and improviser earning her a prestigious “Targa Tenco” nomination by the Italian press.

The result is a truly unique experience that leaves audiences both surprised and emotionally moved. They have performed overseas with noted special guests and in that spirit, their NY appearances have included friends such as pianists Helio Alves (Jazz Forum) and Art Hirahara (Birdland, Mezzrow’s and 2017 and 2018 Italian tours) and percussionist Rogerio Boccato (NYU and Jazz Forum) among others.

The duo makes its return to NY in January and February 2019 where you can catch them at Birdland (Feb.7), Zinc Bar (Feb.8,15), Jazz Forum (Jan.27), NYU Casa Zerillo-Marimo (Feb.28) and WKCR radio’s Jobim Birthday broadcast (Jan.25).

Their return to NY will be kicked off by performances at APAP as part of the Pat Harris showcases at the NY Hilton (Sat. Jan.5th at 4:30 PM and Sun. Jan 6th at 7:30 PM).

“… the eMPathia Jazz Duo delivered the hottest show of the night… the Italian singer Mafalda Minnozzi and American guitarist Paul Ricci literally raised the audience with jazzy versions of ” A Felicidade, “Desafinado” as well as other classics such as “Every Time We Say Goodbye” and “Estate”.
– Carlos Calado: Brazilian Jazz author and critic at “FOLHA de S.PAULO”.

“… the jazz component surpasses every other idiom or inspirational source, because Ricci is a jazz guitarist from head to toe and at Mafalda’s side [he] tends to “undress”, to “essentialize” how much she adds with extraordinary interpretive verve… which is vocal but also physical, theatrical… without anything preconceived.”
– Alberto Bazzurro:  Italian Jazz Critic and author at “MUSICA JAZZ”.

“… there were some revelations, for example the eMPathia duo composed of Paul Ricci and Mafalda Minnozzi… Fantastic!… with a repertoire of Brazilian and Italian music revisited in Jazz.”
– Humphrey Inzillo: Argentine Jazz critic and author at “LA NACION”.

“…overflowing with interpretative choices, communicative appeal and strong artistic personality, the singer expertly handles the dynamics and projection with grace and deep emotional impact, supported by the refined woven comping from the guitarist suggesting a sort of imaginary bridge connecting Italy, the United States and Brazil…”
– Stefano Dentice: Italian Jazz Critic at “ITALIAINJAZZ”

“each song is thoughtful, considered, two strands of the same silk intertwined. This is jazz to fall in love by, the soaring of a songbird in the big blue note-filled sky”
– Debbie Burke: American jazz author and critic

Veteran vocalist Roberta Donnay, whose new album “My Heart Belongs to Satchmo—a collection of tunes from the Louis Armstrong songbook of the 1920’s-1930’s—is drawing rave reviews.
A versatile performer with a wide range of platforms, Donnay has written, produced and performed songs that have appeared on television (“One Life to Live,” “All My Children,” “The Young & The Restless” and “Nash Bridges,” among others), documentaries (“Pie Lady of Pie Town,” and “Reservoirs of Strength”), and served as music supervisor (“Journey Of The Universe”).

As a songwriter and performer, Donnay has won awards including ASCAP Composer Awards, Top Solo Indie Artist in Performing Songwriter Magazine, one of the Best Albums in DownBeat Magazine, and an International Film Music Award.

As a singer and performer, Donnay has opened for, or performed with, Joey Alexander, George Benson, Bob Dorough, David Grisman, Bela Fleck, John Hammond, Dan Hicks, Dr. John, Christian McBride, Maria Muldaur, Lewis Nash, Joe Sample, David Sanborn, Leon Russell, Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, Lee Ritenour, Booker T. Jones, Tuck & Patti and many more.

“A modern take of the hot swingin’ jazz and sultry blues of the 1920s and 30s that will make you want to dance all night!” – Verdi Club

“She is an endangered species.” — Dr. Herb Wong, legendary jazz expert

“Award-winning vocalist and songwriter Roberta Donnay is that rare species of musician who almost lives in another time, as she and her Prohibition Mob Band exist to revive the Jazz Age of America.” — Motema Music

“Roberta Donnay is a Jazz Age preservationist, guardian of Depression-era sounds, and extender of traditions, but her music isn’t covered with cobwebs or dated in any way.” — All About Jazz

Frank Catalano Quartet Appearing @ The Birdland Theater Tomorrow and Friday

Tickets & Info

Signed to Chicago’s Delmark Records as a teenaged-native-son-protégé of Von Freeman, the now 41-year-old Frank Catalano has become a distinctive improviser, prolific composer, patented inventor, brand ambassador, and unparalleled collector of vintage saxophones. With his distinctive voices, both in speech and on saxophone, Frank exudes infectious enthusiasm. He has been described as a traveling locus of creative energy — seemingly interested in, and good at everything.

Frank’s early professional career was marked by an accident in which the middle finger of his right hand was severed then reattached. He had to re-learn the saxophone, sparking a stylistic expansion from his Chicago-school roots to being featured in bands across the jazz and pop spectrum on recordings by Jennifer Lopez, Destiny’s Child, John Legend, and Seal.

After stints recording for Savoy Records and producing records for Columbia, Frank landed at Rope-a-dope where his four Billboard Jazz Chart topping recordings featured jazz-playing rock stars including drummer Jimmy Chamberlain from the Smashing Pumpkins and saxophonist David Sanborn.

Frank endorses Yamaha saxophones, Rico reeds, JodyJazz mouthpieces, and Reunion Blues gig bags. As a featured brand Ambassador for Drambuie, Frank has cocktails such as, “The Catalano Sidecar,” named for him at bars and restaurants all over the USA. Frank’s Chicago residency at the famous Green Mill as well as tour dates throughout the world are detailed on his website: www.catalanomusic.com

Each year, savvy jazz fans look forward to the annual Highlights In Jazz series. For almost a half century, the Jack Kleinsinger-produced events have brought together a multitude of beloved jazz musicians spanning an eclectic mix of generations and styles. The 2019 season is no exception, with four stellar concerts featuring some of the brightest luminaries in jazz today.

The new season gets off to a roaring start with the Highlights In Jazz 46th Anniversary Gala, featuring pianist/vocalist Daryl Sherman, saxophonist Houston Person, trumpeter Warren Vaché, clarinetist/saxophonist Ken Peplowski, pianist Norman Simmons, bassist Boots Maleson, and guitarist James Chirillo. And as always at Highlights In Jazz events, a special surprise guest will be on hand.

Listeners will be treated to unforgettable performances as these seasoned jazz veterans mix it up together and make the magic happen. “Producing all-star jams is my stock in trade,” Kleinsinger notes. “What you’ll hear at these concerts is different from what you’d hear in a club. These great musicians get together here to play with people they don’t play with every night of the week.”

A mainstay of the New York jazz scene, Daryl Sherman has built a devoted following with her talent and creativity as a pianist and singer, and her distinctive take on the Great American Songbook. A frequent guest on Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz,” Daryl presided over Cole Porter’s Steinway at the Waldorf-Astoria for 14 years, and was legendary bandleader Artie Shaw’s vocalist of choice. She’s appeared with Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Bob Dorough, Wycliffe Gordon, Dick Hyman, Dave McKenna, Jay Leonhart, Howard Alden, Joe Temperley, and Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, to name just a few.

Saxophonist Houston Person is among the most in-demand tenor players in New York today. He’s known for his affinity with singers, honed during his 20-plus years with vocalist Etta Jones. Besides releasing dozens of albums as a leader in the company of greats such as Ron Carter, Steve Nelson, Cedar Walton, Bill Charlap, Joey DeFrancesco, Bernard Purdie, Les McCann, Benny Green, Grady Tate, Curtis Fuller, and other notables, Person has appeared on scores more as a sideman.

Is there anything trumpeter, cornetist, and flugelhornist Warren Vaché can’t do? The New Jersey-born brass star has made his mark from Broadway pit orchestras to big bands to free-wheeling jazz ensembles. He’s appeared in the company of Howard Alden, George Shearing, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bill Charlap and dozens of others. Vaché lists Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Bobby Hackett, Fats Navarro, Tom Harrell and Ruby Braff among his favorite trumpet players.

Saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski was still in elementary school when he landed his first pro gig, playing in a Polish polka band in his native Cleveland. From that moment, he knew the musical life was his destiny. Ken studied with Sonny Stitt, and played with classic bands like the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and with Benny Goodman. He’s also collaborated with Mel Torme, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, and Bill Charlap. Ken has released several albums as a leader and appeared on more than 400 recordings as a sideman.

Norman Simmons wears many hats, all of them gracefully: composer, arranger, pianist, educator, and more. In his native Chicago, he led the house band at one of the most renowned clubs of the era The Beehive, backing greats such as Wardell Gray, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker. Besides providing the arrangement for Ramsey Lewis’ hit “Wade in the Water,” Simmons is widely known for his work with legendary vocalists including Carmen McRae, Anita O’Day, Betty Carter, and Joe Williams, and for his special feel for the compositions of the great Duke Ellington.

In-demand bassist Boots Maleson is a veteran of ensembles large and small, including the big bands of Harry James, Jimmy Dorsey, and Bob Alexander, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He has also accompanied Milt Jackson, Elvin Jones, Jaki Byard, Archie Shepp, Kenny Barron, Dexter Gordon, Stanley Cowell, Benny Carter, and Marlene Verplanck, and many others.

Versatile guitarist James Chirillo has been heard with a spectrum of talent that spans Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Wycliffe Gordon, Michael Feinstein, Tony Bennett, Joe Lovano, Marcus Roberts, Dick Hyman, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, Eddie Durham, Eddie Barefield, Frank Wess, and Joe Wilder. The winner of a composition grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, James has also appeared on Broadway and movie soundtracks.

With the Highlights In Jazz series nudging the half-century mark, Kleinsinger is justly proud of his ongoing legacy as a producer. Since the very first Highlights in Jazz event, “Every concert in the series has been integrated, has included a variety of younger artists and veterans, and has featured a renowned surprise guest. And every year we honor a living jazz great—let’s honor them while they can smell the roses,” he declares. This year’s honoree, Randy Brecker, will be feted at the May 16th concert.

The HIJ series is a favorite destination for New York jazz fans and in-the-know out-of-towners. Besides the lineup of jazz icons onstage, there are often stars to be found in the audience as well—sports greats Venus Williams and Willie Randolph, actors Bette Midler and Alan Alda, and author Kurt Vonnegut, to name just a few.

The secret to the longevity of the beloved Highlights In Jazz series? “We’re doing the concerts other producers don’t do,” Kleinsinger says, “and in the process we’ve outlasted everyone who’s ever done jazz concerts in the history of New York.”

You won’t want to miss a single event in this new season of Highlights In Jazz!

Jazz trumpeter Chris Pasin releases Ornettiquette, a musical joyride of an album inspired by free jazz pioneers Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry

For his 4th CD as leader, jazz trumpeter Chris Pasin leads his vibrant band Ornettiquette in saluting NEA Jazz Master and Pulitzer Prize winner Ornette Coleman and his long-time collaborator Don Cherry

“Imagine standing on a beach with the tide tugging the sand away under your feet while still feeling grounded in sea
and sand and ski—absolutely thrilling.”

–Michael Hochanadel, Jukebox, The Daily Gazette

With his accessible and entertaining new album, Ornettiquette, trumpeter Chris Pasin and Ornettiquette, his adventurous band of inspired musicians, take a joyous look at the music of saxophonist/composer/innovator Ornette Coleman and his long-time sonic partner trumpeter Don Cherry.

This is the fourth release as a leader for New York-native Pasin, a longtime practitioner of jazz from straight-ahead to avant-garde. “I became acquainted with the music of Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Albert Ayler as a teenager, and played along with their records,” Pasin recalls. “A little later I transcribed ‘Ghosts,’ and started playing it with people, but it was not until recently that the idea of a band playing the music inspired by these heroes occurred to me, thus engendering Ornettiquette.”

Highlights among Ornettiquette’s eight compositions include:

“Ghosts” salutes its composer, Albert Ayler, with steady confidence, from the ethereal vocal/vibes/drums opening, through compelling trumpet/sax interplay, to a tender ending.

A chill-inducing rendition of “Lonely Woman,” among Coleman’s most renowned compositions, featuring an ominous bowed bass undercurrent, introspective vocal, and gripping trumpet solo.

Ornettiquette’s upbeat and jaunty take on the lilting melody of “Tomorrow Is the Question.” Check out the fine saxophone solo and propulsive drumming.

Chris Pasin, a long-time resident of New York’s upper Hudson Valley, earned a dual degree in classical and jazz trumpet performance at New England Conservatory. He has proved his bona fides in both forums, playing with the likes of Gunther Schuller, Toshiko Akiyoshi, George Russell, Jimmy Giuffre, Jaki Byard, Buddy Rich and a host of others. Chris has an affinity for collaborating with singers, working with legends including Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan and Tony Bennett.

This album marks the second collaboration between Pasin and producer Patricia Dalton Fennell on Planet Arts records. The first—2017’s successful holiday album Baby It’s Cold Outside—earned critical acclaim as well as a meteoric rise to the top 50 on the charts.

When Pasin sought musicians to accompany him on his adventures into Ornette Coleman/Don Cherry territory, he didn’t have to look far. Fellow Hudson Valley dwellers Karl Berger (piano/vibes) and Ingrid Sertso (vocals) had both played with Coleman and Cherry. With encouragement from the two icons, Berger and Sertso cofounded the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock in the early 1970s. The pair have played and collaborated with innovators including Don Ellis, Carla Bley, Sam Rivers, Pharoah Sanders, Dave Holland, Eric Dolphy, Steve Lacy, Ed Blackwell, Bob Moses, Pauline Oliveros, Nana Vasconcelos, Olatunji, and others.
Also joining Pasin on Ornettiquetteare:

Alto saxophonist Adam Siegel, who has fronted his own bands over the past decade as well as become an in-demand sideman. Recognized for his intense and original approach, the graduate of Philadelphia’s University of the Arts has played with everyone from Dick Oatts to Pete Seeger.

Bassist Michael Bisio has appeared on dozens of albums as leader, coleader or sideman with the likes of Matthew Shipp, Charles Gayle, Connie Crothers, Whit Dickey, Ivo Perelman, Barbara Donald, Newman Taylor Baker, Sonny Simmons and Sabir Mateen. The winner of multiple awards and grants, Bisio is also a widely respected composer and educator.

Drummer Harvey Sorgen has conducted workshops internationally and performed with Ahmad Jamal, Dave Douglas, Zakir Hussain, Wadada Leo Smith, Roswell Rudd, Levon Helm, Bill Frisell, Carlos Santana, Greg Allman, Jack DeJohnette, and more.

With its invigorating and heartfelt sound, Ornettiquette is certain to delight jazz fans in the know, as well as be a great introduction to the music for the so-far uninitiated.

“At this gig at ronnie scotts , jason miles adapted his studio craftsmanship to free-flowing small-group jazz loosely inspired by the first electric bands that miles davis took on the road in the early 1970s. Tightly argued themes delivered sparse riffs, declamatory shouts and broody sustained brass harmonies. The experienced reggie washington on bass and gene lake on drums acted as one while miles established mood and pulse with a single touch.but with trumpeter theo croker delivering spiky solos in a bold and brassy tone and multi-instrumentalist jay rodriguez playing with an edge that bordered on the avant-garde, “kind of new” avoided
Imitation and lived up to its title.”

 TREASURY OF JEWISH CHRISTMAS SONGS
A Cool Jazz Tribute to the Jewish Songwriters

“Jake Ehrenreich sings these songs with easy pop-jazz panache, a slightly husky tone and casual swing that more than once evoke a younger Tony Bennett.”
George Kanzler Hot House Magazine December 2018

“Swings like a young Tony Bennett. Add Roger Kellaway and some solid jazzbos to the mix and you get this record that you‘d think is a one note joke but runs so much deeper into so much more.”  Chris Spector  Midwest Record

“You will wish Christmas came more than once a year.  It’s just wonderful!”
Alan & Marilyn Bergman  Legendary Grammy/Oscar winning songwriters

“Jake Ehrenreich is a pleasant ringer for Tony Bennett and is ably supported by the trio of pianist Roger Kellaway…”  Andrey Henkin  The NYC Jazz Record

“A top class trio, with a singer whose voice has shades of Nat King Cole…”                     Ann Alex  Bebop Spoken Here  (England – Winner 2018 Parliamentary Jazz Awards)

“Ehrenreich’s swinging delivery is reminiscent of a modern-day Tony Bennett –  a little rough around the edges – but full of sincerity and informed through study of the material. This well-conceived album acts as both warm holiday fare and as a tribute to the fine songwriters.”   Thomas Cunniffe  jazzhistoryonline.com

“I can’t think of a better Christmas present! Jake & Roger’s rendition truly brings the song to life.”  Johnny Mandel    Legendary Grammy / Oscar Winning Songwriter

“This is a fine collection, well sung, and would be a welcome addition to any library of Christmas CDs”.  Joe Lang  Jersey Jazz Magazine

“The album is a cool jazz delight. Ehrenreich has a vocal style not dissimilar to Tony Bennett, while Kellaway has an incredibly delicate and deft touch on piano. If anyone wants to hear some laid back swing, cool jazz versions of Christmas classics then this is what you need.”  Kev Rowland housofprog.com

A Jewish child of Holocaust Survivors who incongruously grew up loving Christmas music, Jake first explored this theme in his hit Broadway show A Jew Grows in Brooklyn, where the New York Times raved “…a beautiful medley of Christmas Songs written by Jewish composers. Mr. Ehrenreich has a strong pleasant voice…” Now Jake teams up with Legendary Jazz pianist Roger Kellaway and his trio for a concert full of great music, behind the scenes stories and great fun. A unique way to spend the holiday.

This and that
• Jim and Pam Walker Eigo just opened a new business in Warwick – Original Vinyl Records, at 314 State Route 94 South.
They are both thrilled that Jim’s Jazz Promo Services clients include two 2019 Grammy nominations:
– Best Latin Jazz Album: Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band’s “West Side Story Reimagined” (Jazzheads)
– Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album: Jim McNeely and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band’s “Barefoot Dances and Other Visions” (Planet Arts)
The Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Also through Jazz Promo Services, Jake Ehrenreich of Monroe – actor, singer and playwright – just released a new holiday CD, “A Treasury of Jewish Christmas Songs,” with the Roger Kellaway Trio. They will appear at Birdland in NYC Dec. 24-25 with shows at 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Ehrenreich also has launched his new “Jake Ehrenreich Show” on the JBS Jewish Broadcasting Service. The talented performer made a grand entrance as the star of the autobiographical comedy musical, “A Jew Grows in Brooklyn.” The show will be taped before live audiences at the Triad Theater in NYC. His first guests were Marilyn Michaels and Alan Dershowitz. Ehrenreich gave a special tribute to Jerry Lewis as an entrant in the Catskills Hall of Fame.
