"Massey demonstrates a take-no-prisoners attitude and a willingness to
explore different avenues of music with great attention to detail and a
good balance between explosive, raw energy and musical restraint."
– Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

Chris Massey’s NJP will be playing selections from their latest album
Vibrainium available on iTunes,CD Baby and www.chrismasseyjazz.com

"For those who have an emphasis on the drums will love the way this guy
plays, sometimes playing busy like an Elvin Jones but always dedicated in
knowing how intense or delicate to play, like an Art Blakey or Brian Blade."
– John Book, This is Books Music

"Musically, Massey’s influences reside firmly in the advanced hardbop of
the Blue Note Sixties, another common ground with (Wayne) Shorter. The
cerebral connotation in the title and another commonality with Shorter
comes through in Massey’s clever compositions and arrangements."
– Derek Taylor, All About Jazz

"After hearing Chris Massey, it’s apparent that he has been well-educated and is a very enthusiastic drummer. It is apparent that he listened to some of the great drummers like Max Roach, Roy Haynes and truly embodies their spirit while performing."- Delores Ashford, Delores Music Management

“The Nue Jazz Project is like a modern revival of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Right away I could tell that this group has something special. I haven’t heard a group like this since Wynton came on the scene. This group is going places.”- Teddy Pentalas, Jazz Guitarist/Educator

About The New CD:

In Japanese folklore, a Nue is a creature with a monkey’s head, body of a raccoon, legs of a tiger and tail of a snake. This is the Nue Jazz Project; founded and lead by drummer Chris Massey. A mixture of culture, and backgrounds meld to create the wonderful music in their latest album Vibranium.

Listening, it is clear that their sound comes from the roots of Art Blakey, with the opening number "Galactus" written by Chris Massey. You can hear the vocabulary of the “Nue” sound in their improvisation. It is fresh and full of heart. Chris gives a distinct nod here to Jeff "Tain" Watts, who has been a large influence on his playing and compositional style. . The band is hard hitting with intensity that you can feel and is a fantastic amalgamation of modern sounds with straight ahead jazz.

  About Chris Massey:

Chris Massey is following his ambition of making a name for himself as a new breed of young talented player in the world of jazz. Growing up in small town Uniontown,Ohio where he picked up his first pair of drumsticks a the age of 9 he took his first steps into his musical career as a Jazz Performance major at Youngstown State University in 2000.

Among performing with such modern legends such as Donald Harrison Jr., Joe Lovano, Dave Holland and members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra Chris is also an accomplished composer and arranger. Gaining inspiration from notable drummer-composers such as Brian Blade and Jeff "Tain" Watts; Chris has began composing his first works in early 2001. Chris also has been teaching lessons of all age varieties from the skill ranges of beginner to advanced college for over a decade.

Chris above all else is a modern drummer taught in the old tradition of swing; his ethos is to "put his sound" underneath a player and let the fire start to spread. He is currently residing in the New York City area and performing with/leading his modern jazz group "The Nue Jazz Project". He has performed in many venues across the city such as Smoke, Cleopatra’s Needle, Smalls, Fat Cat, 55bar, The Garage, The Iridium and many others. He currently finished recording his debut album entitled "Vibrainium" due to be released in Fall 2010
