DAVID LOPATO – “Many Moons” (GLOBAL COOLANT 01) Street DATE: March 01, 2011

“Many Moons” is a highly eclectic collection of twelve original compositions spanning three decades of writing, distilled through the medium of solo piano. The styles range from Harlem stride to blues, ballads, bebop, bluegrass, avant-garde improvisation and prepared piano, yet there is a common thread throughout: a love of textural and harmonic richness and a very personal approach to the entire tradition of creative improvised music.
Pianist/composer David Lopato has performed his own compositions extensively throughout the world. As a composer he has received multiple grants from the N.E.A., New York Foundation for the Arts, Meet the Composer, The Beards Fund and a Fulbright Fellowship to study Javanese Gamelan in Surakarta, Indonesia, where he lived for a year.

As a performer he has toured his own music in configurations ranging from solo piano to 10-piece ensembles. He has performed with Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Mark Helias, Ray Anderson, Wadada Leo Smith, Dewey Redman, Gerry Hemingway, and Jane Ira Bloom among others. He is also the producer of the concert series at InHouse in downtown Manhattan, and teaches on the faculties of the The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and Montclair State University.

“an inventive and resourceful pianist…his compositions never faltering for a second.” New York Times

“Lopato’s stylistic range and technique are prodigious”  Downbeat Magazine
