This talented jazz singer from Japan is making her Birdland debut with an appropriately all-star quartet of pianist Joe Davidian, guitarist Paul Meyers, bassist Noriko Ueda and drummer Dwayne 'Cook' Broadnax. The show serves to announce the release of her new album, Why Did I Choose You, recorded in New York with another all star band (including Satoshi Inoue on guitar and the outstanding piano-bass team of Michael Kanan and Neil Miner, plus Mr. Broadnax) and already on Apple Music and Spotify. So far, my favorite track is the harmonic mash-up of Irving Berlin’s standard “Blue Skies” with “In Walked Bud,” Thelonious Monk’s classic harmonic variation thereof; this is also an excuse to duet with the formidable vocalist and teacher Marion Cowings, who, no pun intended, is truly one of the unsung heroes of the New York jazz scene.
