On Wed. June 5th at 9:30pm, GARY LUCAS will perform his celebrated live solo guitar score for Wu Yonggang’s 1934 Chinese silent classic film “The Goddess” starring incandescent Chinese film actress Ruan Lingyu, in the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Cluj Romania–a special event of the 18th Transylvania International Film Festival.

The cine-concert is part of the TIFF 2019 FOCUS CHINA, a special section developed in collaboration with the Shanghai International Film Festival, the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance, and the Embassy of the Republic of China in Romania, This is Gary’s second time performing at TIFF, where he previously played his live score for the legendary Spanish “Dracula” outside Banffy Castle in Bontida Romania in 2010.
Lucas has been quite active performing his live film scores all over the globe, this year accompanying Luis Bunuel’s “El Angel Exterminador” in Bilbao Spain, premiering his live score for Erich Von Stroheim’s “The Wedding March” at la Cinematheque Francaise, and performing an ongoing retrospective of his live solo film scores at The Metrograph, NYC’s premier art-house cinema.
Next up at the Metrograph, on Sat. June 15th Gary plays his original live solo score for Paul Wegener and Carl Boese’s
“The Golem” (1920) at 8pm, as part of an ongoing retrospective of his film scores there curated by Jacob Perliin and Robert Melvin Rubin.
Lucas will be playing to a newly restored print of the film courtesy of Kino-Lorber.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Gary's live score for "The Golem", which the guitarist has performed in over 20 countries worldwide since debuting the work at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria in 1989 with his co-composer keyboardist Walter Horn— including Brazil, Russia, Canada, South Korea, Australia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Israel, and all across the UK, Europe and the US.
