Here’s a rare chance to see two stalwart ensembles, celebrating the birth of jazz in New Orleans, in a concert setting. Tuba-ist (is that a word?) David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band, which has been enjoying a residence at Birdland that’s been running nearly as long as the Phantom of the Opera up the block, this evening features an especially celestial line-up of the diminutive dynamo trumpeter Alphonso Horne, the aggressive Aussie reed doubler (and highly academic) Professor Adrian Cunningham, trombonist Dion Tucker, Vancouver’s own banjo and guitar maven Arnt Arntzen, and drummer David F. Gibson. Sharing the bill is the living legacy of the Crescent City’s other great first generation jazz virtuoso Sidney Bechet – who probably did more than anyone to accelerate the spread of Jazz in France and Europe. Soprano sax master Jean Baptiste Franc, playing the great Sidney’s own fish horn, has lately been doing a brilliant duet with his equally talented wonderchild, Daniel Franc. Keeping the whole works a family affair, Sidney’s own son, Daniel Bechet, completes the ensemble on percussion.
