Karen Borca Quartet —
Saturday, October 5, 8 PM
"Ms. Borca is one of jazz's very few bassoonists, and her solo style owes a lot to the modern tenor-saxophone tradition. But the tone of the bassoon makes Ms. Borca's cascading arpeggios and clear high notes sound more plaintive and quizzical than they would on a saxophone."
— Jon Pareles, New York Times
We are honored to present the innovative, criminally under-recognized bassoonist Karen Borca. With decades of experience in the ensembles of such major artists as Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, William Parker among many others, Ms. Borca leads a thrilling quartet of veteran creative musicians, including Warren Smith on vibes, Hilliard Greene on bass and Jackson Krall on drums.

James Emery Trio — Saturday, November 2, 8 PM
“Three decades of picking obliques with Leroy Jenkins, Anthony Braxton and bending Monk-bebop-blues notes with the String Trio of New York have evolved guitarist James Emery into a formidable improviser/composer/arranger with a particularly unique chordal-melodic-harmonic six-string flow. James Emery is special.” — Tom Terrell, Jazz Times
The noted modern jazz guitarist Emery closes out J@A's 2019 season with an accomplished chamber jazz trio featuring Rob DeBellis on alto saxophone, clarinet and flute and Kim Cass on bass. |
