Otonowa, which means “sound circle”, was formed originally to showcase traditional Japanese songs and pop through jazz arrangements. In 2011, the Fukushima earthquake and tsunami in Japan became a crucible for Otonowa, launching these Japanese-American jazz luminaries into touring and recording to raise both funds and spirits for the survivors. Commemorating the seventh anniversary of the disaster, the group meshes their Jazz mastery with their rich cultural roots.

Formed in 2008, Quarteto Moderno features Richard Boukas’s compositions in Brazilian genres including samba, choro, baião, frevo, maracatu, marcha, frêvo, valsa and guarânia. Boukas synergizes these traditional forms with a rich melodic and harmonic vocabulary drawn from jazz and chamber music. The group’s performances showcase a fiery, spontaneous interaction driven by daring improvisations and perpetual rhythmic explorations.
