The concert features the music of pianist McCoy Tyner, and is a tribute to his artistry. The performance will highlight several important compositions including “Passion Dance” and “Peresina”.

Pianist McCoy Tyner’s importance in jazz history as a pianist is undeniable; having created a unique and distinct style of playing that has influenced innumerable jazz musicians on virtually all instruments. Tyner began his professional career playing in the Art Farmer – Benny Golson Jazztet and later in John Coltrane’s “classic quartet”. Throughout his vast career, Tyner has also led his own groups, composing unique compositions, many of which have become jazz standards. His works as a composer range from bebop to modal to Latin styles, and he has recorded extensively with a variety of small and large ensembles, and as a solo artist. Tyner has recorded a multitude of acclaimed albums, exhibiting his vibrant improvisational approach. This program will highlight McCoy Tyner’s career by providing a sample of his original compositions, as well as some of the songs he is best known for having recorded with John Coltrane and others.

Barry Roseman is a jazz artist who received his degree in music from University of California at Berkeley. He was trained at a young age in classical violin, and discovered jazz as a teenager, studying with guitarist Ted Greene. He performed around San Francisco, then moved to Boston and later New York City to play jazz with the masters. He currently resides in Maryville TN, and performs throughout the Knoxville region.
