Musicians: Laura Noejovich -Vocals, Takeshi Asai-Piano

Laura Noejovich, who has a very attractive and often-haunting voice, makes her recording debut on Laura Has New Standards. Accompanied by pianist Takeshi Asai, the young singer performs 14 of her favorite songs and displays a great deal of potential. Laura, who studied neuroscience at Skidmore College (graduating in 2018) and currently works as a laboratory associate, was classically trained and had the voice to become an opera singer if that had been her choice. While the technical skills that she acquired from singing opera has resulted in her having a very strong and flexible instrument and knowing how to generate power to maximum effect, throughout Laura Has New Standards she displays skills in several different areas of music.

Throughout this project, Laura is accompanied by pianist Takeshi Asai, who is very tasteful, quietly inventive, and complementary to the singer. He graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 1997 after studying jazz improvisation. Asai has led his own CD since 1995, has had a career that includes writing music for films, and performs with the Japanese jazz ensemble WaFoo. Laura begins the program with a saucy version of “Why Don’t You Do Right” that is topped off with an impressive long note at its conclusion. She displays a sweet personality on “Misty” (the wide intervals are no problem) and, on the playful and vintage-sounding “Funny Honey,” demonstrates that she can play a character very well; one could easily imagine her appearing in musical theater.

During “The Fool On The Hill,” Laura sounds like a veteran folk singer. Through her subtle creativity, she makes “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” sound fresh and heartfelt. She gives “Someone To Watch Over Me” (complete with verse) a semi-operatic treatment, and then sings the blues on “Dreamer’s Ball.” The other selections include the quietly dramatic “Once Upon A Dream,” the determined “On My Own,” a powerful rendition of “Summertime,” and tender ballad interpretations of “Somewhere Out There,” “I’m Not That Girl,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again,” and the always beloved “When You Wish Upon A Star.”

Laura Noejovich shows throughout Laura Has New Standards that she has the potential to become a significant musical force. She is certainly off to a strong start..
