Mark Winkler Double CD Release Party!

Hollywood & NYC!

Wednesday Aug., 17th Catalina’s & Thur., Sept. 8th Laurie Beechman Theatre

— SWEET SPOT. Lots of crowd favorites like Somewhere in Brazil and Sweet Spot are on the new disc, as well as Mark’s renditions of such standards as But Not For Me and On Broadway—and if the evening isn’t stellar enough, he will be joined by a very special guest —

Phil Swann (his co writer on Play It Cool) who will be having a CD release party for his new album-Stale Scotch and Cheap Cigars. Phil’s CD is a master class in songwriting and late night saloon singing, featuring the cream of  musicians and 10 Swann songs that sound like extra pages from the Great American Songbook.

And if that is not enough—This night is also a celebration for their jazz film noir musical Play It Cool which  opens in New York City in early September. Both Mark and Phillip have recorded songs from Play It Cool on their new CDs—so a special evening should be had by all. They will be joined by the Eli Brueggemann quartet—and some surprise guests!

Sweet Spot is the follow up to Winkler’s 2009 CD Till I Get It Right which was chosen as one of the 10 Best Vocal CDs of that year by Jazz Times Magazine. Sweet Spot once again showcases Winkler’s skill as a consummate lyricist and singer, but this time features him on 4 standards including On Broadway and But Not For Me, As well as Andre Previn’s Like Young and Bobby Troup’s Their Hearts Were Full of Spring. The title cut is a Winkler original that is a duet between him and Vocalist Supreme Barbara Morrison, with a guitar solo by Grant Geissman. Always known for the company he keeps, this time he ups the ante with such jazz stars as Billy Childs, Grant Geissman, Bob Sheppard, Greg Hutchinson and Anthony Wilson.

PLAY IT COOL transports you back to the days of film noir and smoky hot jazz in a secret 1953 Hollywood club called Mary’s Hideaway. Where men couldn’t dance with men and women were expected to know their place in society. It’s a show about five individuals: their passions, ambitions and their courage to break the rules no matter what the price.

The supremely cool king of indie jazz swing finds his Sweet Spot in his wonderful new CD–Containing originals that qualify brilliantly to be in the rarefied company of tunes by Gershwin,  Previn and his longtime inspiration, Bobby Troup. Winkler sasses it up with blues great Barbara Morrison on the title cut “Sweet Spot”, has uproarious fun imagining greener musical pastures in “Somewhere in Brazil” and does the bossa thing as tropical breezes dare us to “Catch Me If You Can.” Perfectly complementing his sparkling, improvisational twist of “On Broadway” is a glimpse of his up-coming off-Broadway show “Playing It Cool,” with a lovely tune that reminds us that “Jazz Is A Special Taste.” In the heart of Mark Winkler, indeed it will always be.Jonathan Widran
