A highly accomplished veteran of the New York club scene, you might say that Natalie Douglas is, if not exactly uncategorizable, a rare artist who ingeniously touches on lots of different categories at once, combining the soul of a gospel singer and the musicianship of a jazz singer with the warm, chatty intimacy of a great cabareteuse. She can sing sweetly and softly and she can belt with the kind of power that you makes you respect her authority. Yet Ms. Douglas's greatest gift is for narrative and storytelling, and creating a direct personal connection with every audience lucky enough to be in front of her. Lo, these many years, she’s made a specialty of songbook “tribute” shows (almost always the fourth Monday of every month at Birdland) to iconic artists who have meant a lot to her – ranging from Sammy Davis to Dolly Parton to Judy Garland – most famously a two-part salute to Nina Simone that resulted in an excellent album, To Nina … Live at Birdland. Tonight’s tribute to the late Nancy Wilson should be an especially appropriate and poignant one.
