Birdland is proud to welcome back the Block Brothers Quintet!

Dan Block has played in small groups with Richard Wyands, Clark Terry, Tom Harrell, John Pizzarelli and Harry Allen.
 

He has done big band work with Toshiko Akyoshi, Maria Schneider, Vince Giordano, Ken Peplowski and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He has played and recorded with Michael Feinstein, Rosemary Clooney, Bobby Short, Tony Bennett, Catherine Russell and Paul Simon. Dan is on the jazz faculty at the Juilliard School. He has also done extensive film score work, and was heard on countless radio and TV commercials.

 

Rob Block hails from St. Louis Missouri. He has a masters degree in jazz performance from the University of New Orleans. Rob returned to New York City after living in St. Louis, New Orleans, and Chicago. He can be seen in many of New York City’s jazz venues. He has worked with many jazz luminaries including Arturo O’Farrill,Hugh”Peanuts”Whalum, Willie Akins, Russell Gunn, Keyon Harold, Richard “Groove”Holmes, Charles Earland, Delfeyo Marsalis, and Evan Christ.

 

Aaron Kimmel is a native of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. He holds a bachelor of music degree from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Kenny Washington and Billy Drummond, and he is now a freelance drummer living in New York City. He frequently appears at Smalls and Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, performing as a sideman with Ken Peplowski, the Benny Green trio, among others. He has also played with such jazz luminaries as Harry Allen, Eric Alexander, Joe Magnarelli, Grant Stewart, Terell Stafford, Ryan Kisor, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Brian Lynch, Ann Hampton Callaway, Mary Stallings and Jon Faddis.

 

Neal “Sugar” Caine is one of the premier jazz bassist on the scene today. His dynamic style is punctuated by a huge sound, a great feel, and masterful technique that have made him the chosen bassist to an array of stars, from Harry Connick, Jr. and Diana Krall, to the venerable jazz legends Betty Carter and Elvin Jones. A dual resident of New York City and New Orleans, this St. Louis native has delighted audiences worldwide since he began touring internationally at age 19 with the Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet.
