You can’t name a jazz drummer with better roots: T.S. Monk’s father was the legendary Thelonious, Art Blakey gave T.S. his first drum set, Max Roach gave him lessons and he began his career as his father’s drummer. Bossa Nova would be unthinkable without the contributions of composer/guitarist Durval Ferreira whose beloved melodies were made famous by Sarah Vaughan, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Cannonball Adderley and others. Pianist-composer Kerry Politzer’s Quartet pays tribute to Ferreira in this show as she does on her new album Diagonal that All About Jazz says “perfectly captures the seductive spirit of classic Bossa Nova and the bebop-grounded vibe of honest Samba Jazz.”

The winner of numerous international awards for his trumpet playing (including 2017 ITG International Trumpet Competition Winner), 25 year old Tony Glausi has already recorded six impressive albums and he brings his quintet to Tarrytown for an evening of new original music from his upcoming album. This recording is different as, for the first time, Tony sings a songbook, a collection of stories told melody by melody. He’ll be accompanied by Julian Lee on the tenor saxophone, Ryan Slatko on piano, Dan Chmielinski on bass, and Bryan Carter on drums.

Carlos Barbosa-Lima has long been a masterful interpreter of a wide range of melodic music. A brilliant acoustic guitarist, Barbosa-Lima gives taste and feeling to works that range from Gershwin to Bach, Jobim to Debussy. A native of Brazil, Barbosa-Lima began studying the guitar when he was seven. Among his teachers were the influential Brazilian guitarist Isaias Savio and Andrés Segovia. While still a child, he was performing in public and he made his recording debut when he was just 12. He first toured the United States in 1967, and during 1971-1972 Barbosa-Lima performed in London and New York, gaining a worldwide reputation. Barbosa-Lima’s tasteful yet virtuosic control of the guitar has resulted in consistently delightful solo recitals for Concord Concerto that appeal to a wide audience. A heralded bass player from Brazil who collaborated with masters like João Gilberto and Luis Bonfá, Nilson Matta moved to New York in 1985, continuing working with the best — Joe Henderson, Paquito D’Rivera, Astrud Gilberto, Claudio Roditi, Don Pullen and more. Chosen by Yo-Yo Ma for his Brazilian Project, Nilson played on the Project’s three Grammy-winning records and toured the world. Don’t miss Nilson’s own group in Tarrytown.

A highly-favored guitarist in Brazil, throughout Latin America and in Europe, Sao Paulo native Vinicius Gomes has constantly collaborated with world-class musicians like Seamus Blake, Dave Liebman and two-time Grammy-winner Edu Ribeiro. After playing on Toninho Ferragutti’s 2017 Brazilian Music Award-winning album A Gata Café, Vinicius released his debut record Resiliência. His second album is due shortly.
