“Carlos Barbosa-Lima’s Delicado continues Zoho Music‘s pursuit of the finest South American music in contemporary jazz. This is a fantastic guitar recording, to put it succinctly, and credit should be given to Del Casale, the producer. (I know I tend to give Zoho credit as a whole, but this is clearly a time when I need to single out the man with the plan.”

Alexis Cole Trio featuring David Finck & Kenny Hassler

FRI & SAT • Mar 13 & 14
7 & 9:30 PM

With her sophisticated style and deep contralto that Jazz Times called “smooth and dark as the richest espresso,” Alexis Cole is equally comfortable singing in hard bop settings as tackling Disney or Paul Simon’s material. For two decades, through 11 albums, she’s inhabited standards, especially blues and ballads, in the manner of Sarah Vaughan and Anita O’Day. An old friend of the Jazz Forum, Alexis remains an international attraction. Come see why.

Willie Martinez Latin Jazz Quartet

SUN • MAR 15
4 & 6 PM

New York’s music scene has it all so it’s natural that Brooklyn-born drummer-composer-arranger-vocalist Willie Martinez has played the city’s varied major stages for three decades, from CBGB’s to Carnegie Hall. One of the most sought-after drummers in Latin Jazz, he’s performed with legends like bandleader Chico O’Farrill and pianist George Cables besides fronting La Famillia Sextet. His own quartet gigs are always some of the hottest dates in town.

Willie Martinez will be performing with pianist NIcki Denner, bassist Bernie Minoso and reedman/flutist Anton Denner!

Next Weekend: Mar 20 – 22

Roni Ben-Hur Quintet w/ Steve Wilson, Donald Vega, Harvie S & Sylvia Cuenca

FRI & SAT • Mar 20 & 21
7 & 9:30 PM

Among his generation’s top jazz guitarists, Roni Ben-Hur’s gorgeous tone and fluidity graces both straight ahead jazz and Brazilian styles with subtle brilliance. Grammy Winning guitarist Russell Malone says that, “Everything Roni does is beautiful. He has the magic touch,” and Roni comes to Tarrytown with a suitably superior ensemble, including saxophonist Steven Wilson, bassman Harvie S., pianist Donald Vega and drummer Sylvia Cuenca. Be witness to their magic.

Eduardo Belo Group

SUN • MAR 22
4 & 6 PM

Originally from Brasilia, bassist/guitarist Eduardo Belo’s mastery of Brazilian music, Gypsy jazz and modern jazz reached full flower in New York where he’s become a first-call accompanist for top musicians like Brad Mehldau, Bebel Gilberto, Claudio Roditi and Hendrik Meurkens in performance and recording studio. In recent years, he’s begun leading his own group and the acclaimed magical flutist Hadar Noiberg, a frequent collaborator, will be joining him for this gig.

Following Weekend: Mar 27 – 29

Tim Armacost, Gary Smulyan, John Patitucci & Al Foster

FRI & SAT • Mar 27 & 28
7 & 9:30 PM

This gig marks a return engagement at The Jazz Forum for this fireball of a band, a super-group of master musicians. Individually, Tim, Gary, John and Al are all recipients of high honors, have all played with legendary names and performed at the most prestigious venues. When together, they produce fresh, exciting and challenging sounds worthy of their collective talents. This engagement comes on the eve of the quartet gearing up for its first recording.

Livio Almeida Group

SUN • MAR 29
4 & 6 PM

Livio Almeida can play it all, from bebop to Afro-Cuban jazz, but his big tenor sax tones fit perfectly when he wraps them around the sounds of his native Brazil. An energetic live performer, he has been a standout when performing and recording with his own quartet, his Brazilian big band or with the legendary O’Farrill Brothers groups for his ability to infuse groove and funk into tropical compositions.

Soprano saxophonist/composer and NASA artist Jane Ira Bloom brings her trio for the first time to ShapeShifter Lab performing with long-time bandmates bassist Mark Helias and drummer Matt Wilson. A pioneer in the use of live electronics and movement in jazz, Bloom’s been leading bands into new creative territory for over 40 years. She is a multi-time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll and Jazz Journalists Award for Soprano Saxophone and recipient of the Guggenheim fellowship. The trio has always held a special fascination for musicians because “playing in threes” holds out the possibility that something can always be slightly off balance and that’s just what fires the imagination of players like these. Helias and Wilson, mature composer/ bandleaders in their own right, add depth and innovation to every spontaneous choice they make. Don’t miss these “fearless jazz explorers who share a commitment to beauty & adventure.

Anat Cohen first attracted our attention as a swing-style tenor saxophonist and clarinetist when she was the star soloist with one of the greatest big bands of our time (particularly in the swing mode, which not all of them are), Sherrie Maricle and the Diva Orchestra. In the years since she’s become a major bandleader on her own, she’s expanded heavily into world jazz but without losing any of her hard-swing street cred. She’s made some music that draws on her Tel-Aviv roots upbringing, but, more extensively, she’s been inspired by the sounds of Brazil, from Choro to the Bossa Nova to other forms. Her most recent album with her Tentet, Happy Song (2017), includes not only worldly originals by her fellow Isreali, Oded Lev-Ari, but two homages to Benny Goodman, the greatest of all jazz clarinet icons (and who, perhaps not coincidentally, was Jewish). But that’s just the beginning – amongst the six or so albums she’s released in the last half-decade are Live In Healdsburg, a stunning set of reed-and-piano duets with the formidable Fred Hersch. (This one is especially lovely; both Mr. Hersch and Ms. Cohen record so frequently that it’s hard to name a favorite, yet this is an especially exceptional collaboration.) There’s also Outra Coisa, honoring the legendary Moacir Santos, the composer whom Wynton Marsalis has described as “the Duke Ellington of Brazil.” Taken cumulatively, Miss Cohen is probably the greatest Jewish master of Brazilian music since Stan Getz.

Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers, students and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the modernist flame alive and pure, with a low flame burning in every note… [He’s] a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Ben-Hur – born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, now based in Harlem, New York – has released 11 albums as leader or co-leader, with Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” The Star-Ledger of New Jersey summed him up this way: “A deep musician, a storyteller, Ben-Hur works with a warm, glowing sound and has an alluring way of combining engaging notes with supple rhythm.”

Willie Martinez has deep-seeded roots in Latin Jazz. The music was handed down to him through his family.  When he speaks about it and shares his feelings and knowledge through his music, he demonstrates not only enthusiasm but genuine love for what he learned from his grandfather and father, and thereby his heritage.

Come to the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall at SUNY Orange for an evening of great New York Style Latin Jazz that will be thoughtful, yet lots of fun that will have the audience dancing in the aisles!

Willie Martinez and La Familia Sextet.

For over thirty years, Martinez has been a familiar face as a musician as well as a gifted composer in New York City’s eclectic music scene. He and his ensemble play together so well that they know each other’s moves and nuances and share each other’s excitement for the music. “La Familia has given me the honor of breathing life into all the music I have written for them, over and over again. It’s just a very humbling and gratifying experience,” says Martinez.

The instrumentation of the group is engaging and varied. Martinez leads as drummer/vocalist. His rhythm section is comprised of Renato Thoms – percussion, Bernie Miñoso – bass, Enrique Heneine – piano. In addition, Maximilian Schweiger plays baritone and curved soprano saxophones while J. Walter Hawkes rounds out the sound on his trombone.  La Familia Sextet’s music is the marriage of Afro-Caribbean rhythm and the harmonic structure and improvisational nature of American jazz.

In addition to the concert, Willie Martinez and the rhythm section will give a music master class ~ Rhythm is the center of Latin Jazz on Friday, March 6  at 11am in Orange Hall room 23 that is free and open to the public. The four musicians will demonstrate the pounding, pulsing and grooving of Latin jazz and answer questions in this up-close-and-personal session.

In the vague outline of his career, Meredith Willson reminds one of Mel Brooks: they each launched their Broadway careers with a blockbuster and Tony-winning success, Willson with The Music Man and Brooks with The Producers. Both shows not only had long original runs, successful national tours, and film versions, but, revivals and regional productions galore. (Yes, next Fall’s Music Man with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster is going to be impossible to get into.) But the problem with starting one’s Broadway career with a masterpiece is the inevitable issue of what to do for a follow-up. Mel came back with Young Frankenstein, which was a perfectly entertaining show that was unfairly compared to Producers (the score was actually better), and Willson’s return to Broadway was The Unsinkable Molly Brown. It had a respectable run and even a Hollywood incarnation, but was in no way the classic that Music Man was and is. In fact, it’s never been revived until now.

The new Molly Brown is more than a revival, but it’s a complete overhaul. The main assets of the original show, if the 1960 cast album and the 1964 movie are any indication, was a fantastic part for a larger-than-life actress-singer-diva,  a score that was well above average, and a swell bunch of dance numbers, but a plot that never seemed too inspiring. In Kathleen Marshall’s production, the book has been completely rewritten to conform more to the actual story of Margaret Tobin Brown (1867-1932). The only characters that survive from the 1960 libretto are the two leads, Molly and her husband James (name-above-the-title Beth Malone and the equally excellent David Aron Damane). As before, the title character is a plucky, outspoken Missouri girl from the wrong side of the tracks who, through the sheer determination of herself and her husband, gets rich and reinvents herself as a plucky outspoken reformer, philanthropist and, ultimately, Titanic survivor. Dick Scanlan’s new book obviously makes the story more politically correct, in terms of Molly’s attitude towards civil rights and gender equality, but commendably, he retains some aspects of her personality that don’t necessarily conform to a Leftist agenda. As before, Molly is still a bit of a religious zealot, who’s always pushing (or “flouting”) her Christian God in everyone’s face – as in her number, “Are You Sure?” (which is one of several variations on Music Man’s “Trouble”).

Richard Rodgers was perhaps best known for his waltzes, and there’s no one who could write a polka like  Jerry Herman. Meredith Willson’s musical signature was his marches: with The Music Man’s “76 Trombones” he created what might be the marchin’est earworm of all time, and Molly’s leitmotif is “I Ain’t Down Yet.” Where most “I want” songs (Cinderella’s “My Own Little Corner,” The Fantasticks’s “Much More”) are somewhat tender and intimate, “I Ain’t Down Yet” is almost transgressively outgoing, with more rap-like parlando moments reminiscent of “Trouble.” Molly has few inner moments, almost all the time she’s telling everybody else how she feels and what to do. We finally get a waltz in Act II when Molly travels to Europe with the Italianate “Dolce Far Niente.”

As with Herman’s titular diva-driven shows (Dolly, Mame), the whole enterprise depends on a leading lady with charisma up the wazoo, and this it has in Ms. Malone, who is very much a contender on the level of Tammy Grimes (on Broadway) and Debbie Reynolds (in Hollywood). Likewise, her leading man, Mr. Damane, is an appealing bass-baritone with a voice even deeper than those gold mines that he’s always going on about.

Mr. Scanlan and Ms. Marshall have retained many of the original songs, even if the context has been changed; “Belly Up to the Bar Boys” is still a rip-roaring, toe-tapping, saloon-y tune of a full company dance number, and the recurring love song of Mr. and Mrs. Brown is still “I’ll Never Say No.” Among the “new songs created” for the current production (with new lyrics by Mr. Scanlan set to an extant melody by Willson), the one that most grabs me is “I’d Like to Change Everything About You.” Regrettably, the team deleted one of the most memorable numbers in the original score, “If I Knew,” a superior ballad that was memorably recorded by Nat King Cole. Other than that, I can’t think of much I’d like to change about this production. May it’s run be long and may the new cast album be coming soon.

Gary Lucas Plays “The Golem”   BimHuis Amsterdam   photo by Arjen Veldt

On Wed. March 4th at 7:30pm, GARY LUCAS (“One of the best and most original guitarists in America”—Rolling Stone) brings his celebrated live solo guitar score accompanying the 1920 German Expressionist horror masterpiece “THE GOLEM” (1920, d. Paul Wegener and Carl Boese) at the Cornell Cinema at Cornell University in Ithaca New York.

New interview about the project from withradio.org / ticket info:

Lucas marked his 30th anniversary live-scoring “The Golem” last year.

Originally created with co-composer/ keyboardist Walter Horn, the score received raves at the premiere in 1989 at the Museum of the Moving Image,  and Lucas went on to perform it all over the world at festivals and major venues in 20 plus countries,
including Royal Festival Hall in London,  the SP Terror Festival in Sao Paulo Brazil, the New York Jewish Film Festival at Lincoln Center, the Jecheon International Music and Film Festival in South Korea, at Dom Kino in Moscow  and 35mm Theatre in Saint Petersburg, the Silent Movie Theatre in Hollywood, at the Sydney and Melbourne Jewish Film Festivals, at the Next Festival in Tel Aviv, at Petofi Hall in Budapest— an at the Roxy Theatre in Prague, home of The Golem.

GARY LUCAS HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019

His new album with Italian singer The Niro, “The Complete Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas” (Esordisco), was just voted Best Album of 2019 in Classic Rock Magazine Italia.

Review from the Downtown Music Gallery Newsletter NYC 1/17/19:

THE NIRO Featuring GARY LUCAS / DAVIDE COMBUSTI / FRANCESCO ARPINO / et al – The Complete Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas Songbook (Esordisco 1902; Italy) The Niro features Gary Lucas on lead guitars, Davide Combusti on vocals, Francesco Arpino on keyboards, Phil Spalding on bass and Puccio Panettieri on drums. When Jeff Buckley came to NYC in early 1990’s, he was a relative unknown. He soon played at a historic memorial/tribute concert to his long-estranged father, Tim Buckley and wowed the audience due to amazing singing. Former Capt. Beefheart guitar great, Gary Lucas, began collaborating with Jeff Buckley, writing a dozen songs over a ten month period. Each song turned out to be something special. Young Mr. Buckley soon became the lead singer & rhythm guitarist in Mr. Lucas’s band Gods and Monsters, who got signed to Columbia Records. I caught that version of Gods and Monsters playing at St. Ann’s in March of 1992 and they were extraordinary! Sadly, Mr. Buckley soon left the band to pursue a solo career, taking two of the songs for his first solo effort with “Grace” becoming the title song. In 1997, Mr. Buckley began work on his second solo effort, relocating to Memphis to record. In May of that year, Mr. Buckley decided to go swimming in the Mississippi River and soon drowned, ending his life at just 30. In 2002, an album called ’Songs to No One’ was released and included the songs that Buckley and Lucas had recorded as demos. And now, nearly three decades after they were written, Gary Lucas teams up with an Italian rock band known as The Niro to perform all 12 songs that he and Mr. Buckley had written together. This includes five songs which have never appeared on a legit release before now.
Although I recognize the names of 100’s of Italian musicians from jazz and progressive bands, old & new, I hadn’t heard of most of the musicians here. It turns out that their bassist, Phil Spalding, did play with GTR (w/ Steve Howe & Steve Hackett). This disc begins with the five unreleased songs, all of which are superb. The opening song is “No One Must Find You Here” and it begins with Mr. Lucas distinctive swirling guitars. The lead singer here, Davide Combusti, has a strong voice which is similar to Mr. Buckley’s yet it is still his own. And similar to Mr. Buckley’s voice, he sounds like he was influenced by Robert Plant when he sang for Led Zep. It is also you will either really love or not, I am indeed impressed. Both the songs and performances are inspired throughout. The first song ends with an impressive solo guitar section, which is a perfect conclusion to a great opening song. What makes this disc so special is the endlessly inventive guitar playing of Mr. Lucas, inserting nifty flourishes of electric & acoustic guitars with the sly sonic seasoning of the assorted effects that Lucas has long mastered. The feeling that I get when listening to this disc is that is sounds like the long lost album that Mr. Buckley and Mr. Lucas started in 1992 and never really finished. Jeff Buckley was a major player in his own right with many fans around the world. His career was cut short by his early death with just a handful of releases under his belt. Hopefully this great disc will be heard by some of his passionate fans since it is well worth hearing. Quite a marvelous effort from Gary Lucas and The Niro! – Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

Billy Strayhorn (1915-67) is one of the great composers of the 20th century. An indispensable member of the Duke Ellington orchestra, collaborating with Ellington and contributing his own compositions and arrangements. Many of his compositions have become jazz standards.

Pianist John Di Martino and his all-star quartet with tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist Boris Kozlov, and drummer Lewis Nash swing their way through 14 of Strayhorn’s most significant compositions. Di Martino and the fiery Alexander play inventive solos while Kozlov and Nash (who also have their solo spots) keep the momentum flowing with their stimulating support. Starting with “Johnny Come Lately,” the program includes “Lush Life” (with a captivating guest vocal by Raul Midon that makes one wonder how Strayhorn could have written this piece with its insightful lyrics at the age of 15), a joyfully cooking “Raincheck,” a beautiful bossa nova reading of “Star Crossed Lovers,” and a spirited performance of “Isfahan,” one of Strayhorn’s finest compositions. Passion Flower also includes fresh versions of the ballads “Chelsea Bridge” (a feature for Alexander), and “Passion Flower,” a haunting duo performance of “Blood Count” (Strayhorn’s last composition), plus renditions of “Daydream” in 3/4 time and the up-tempo “UMMG,” “Take The ‘A’ Train,” and the lesser-known “Absinthe” and thoughtful solo piano versions of “A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing” and “Lotus Blossom.” Di Martino and his musicians caress Strayhorn’s rich melodies while adding to the legacy of his compositions.

John di Martino is an important jazz pianist with a 45-year career. Born in Philadelphia, he studied with Lennie Tristano and Don Sebesky and made his recording debut in 1990. Since then he has uplifted the music of many major jazz artists including Ray Barretto (he was a long-time member of Barretto’s New World Spirit), David “Fathead” Newman, Pat Martino, Houston Person, Bobby Sanabria, Jon Hendricks, Issac Delgado, Janis Siegel, Gloria Lynne, Freddy Cole, Grady Tate, Giacomo Gates, Nicki Parrott, Jay Clayton, Alexis Cole, and Chris McNulty. In addition, the always tasteful and swinging pianist has led over 15 recordings of his own. John is a composer, arranger and record producer based in New York City. Passion Flower is John Di Martino’s latest accomplishment, a memorable tribute to the brilliant composer Billy Strayhorn.

“John”s soul and being come straight through to his music, the jazz world needs him!”

CÉLINE RUDOLPH
“I love the adrenaline, the here and now, the surprise and the power which the stage grants me.” –

Vocalist and composer Céline Rudolph glides between Berlin, São Paulo, Paris and New York, between tongues and genres, always landing in the very heart of music. Céline is beyond happy to return to New York and play two concerts with different inspiring line-ups: one night with her quartet feat. longtime piano partner Helio Alves and a second night with Brazilian jazz guitarist Vinícius Gomes and Massimo Biolacati on bass.

“One of the jazz vocals records of the year without a shadow of a doubt and the main reason for this beyond her fine voice is the quality of the compositional arc and great sweep of style at play throughout.“

Céline Rudolph particularly enjoys the line-up with these incredibly inspiring musicians because she feels that it truly allows her to connect the ease and natural flow of Brazilian rhythm with the great jazz tradition, and her own songs and compositions recently released on her album PEARLS (2019). Above all, these bands pulsate with the rather effortless vocal and improvisational artistry of Céline Rudolph, which includes exciting rhythmic inspirations, highly sophisticated melodic improvisations and fascinating sound poetry.

„Music is like breathing, it was there ever since I could remember“ Céline Rudolph says and recollects how her father always played a break when jamming on the guitar, so that there was a space for his children to create improvised lines or percussive fills. Born in Berlin and raised with her parents’ rich record collection, the daughter of a Frenchwoman from Bordeaux and a cosmopolitan musical enthusiast from Berlin, picked up the piano and started composing as an autodidact, then started writing French songs on the guitar, which became her main tool of expression. Later, she studied vocal jazz and composition at Hochschule der Künste Berlin with mentors David Friedman, Jerry Granelli, Kirk Nurock, Jay Clayton and Catherine Gayer. Soon, she plunged into African music and studied with the percussionist Famoudou Konaté in West Africa. Her love of Brazilian music led her to São Paulo where she met Rodolfo Stroeter who produced three of her albums and four tours across Europe and Brazil so far: The albums are BRAZAVENTURE, METAMORFLORES (enja records) and SALVADOR (Verve, Universal) which features New York based Brazilian pianist Helio Alves (2011).

Since 2015 she is collaborating with New York based Beninese guitarist Lionel Loueke, having recorded the duo album OBSESSION and then playing together at 12th Jarasum Int. Jazz Festival in South Korea. “This is a very unique project because there are no boundaries. I knew from the start that we are kind of from the same tribe,” says Lionel Loueke. Since then, the duo toured Europe, Asia and Africa. The album OBSESSION reached the annual list of the German Critics Award „Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik“, and won Céline Rudolph the prestigious German Jazz Award ECHO JAZZ 2018 for best jazz vocalist.

Now, praised as “a jewel of European jazz vocals” by the French radio station, TSF, having recorded numerous albums with many wonderful musicians including Gary Peacock, Bob Moses, Naná Vasconcelos, Diego Figueiredo and Marcos Suzano, and esteemed by colleagues like Bobby McFerrin, Lee Konitz or Jay Clayton, the adventurous pearl fisher sailed from Berlin to Brooklyn for her new album PEARLS (released 2019) including Jamire Williams (dr), Leo Genovese (p), Burniss Travis (b) and Céline’s soulmate Lionel Loueke (git).

Funk Shui NYC is a sassy, lively, quirky New York based large ensemble which irreverently mixes jazz with funk, classic rock and film music influences, in five band member originals and five spectacular arrangements of songs by George Harrison, Cream, George Gershwin and Allen Toussaint.

New York City can be loud, dense, and funky. It can make you smile and want to dance. It also has a unique beauty and energy. Funk Shui NYC plays music that represents this great metropolis. Listeners hear in the first note that the band enjoys playing together. After several years of playing in groups as sidemen, we – Dave Morgan and Rob Susman – saw an opportunity to make our own music that was current, relevant, intricate, and a blast.

We were able to attract players who are technically skilled and creatively minded. Oh yeah, we also didn’t want to be so serious all the time. Funk Shui NYC is an ‘all-star band’ in the sense that its members have impressive performing credits, but the roster wasn’t selected for status. The musicians are our friends, collaborators, and each other’s fans. After a few years of playing in New York City night clubs, we decided to record some of the material. On Funk Shui NYC’s ZOHO debut recording, Shark NATO on a Plane, you will hear new compositions, arrangements and solos that represent the pride, joy and humor of Funk Shui NYC’s members.

Shark NATO on a Plane: Composer Rob Susman started with a pun laden title before any music was written. Inspired by Hollywood film comedy horror, its content is exaggerated until it reaches a farcical climax. The 1950’s style radio jingle theme rhythmically turns on itself. The groove blends Latin, Rock and odd street beat rhythms. It’s like Bo Diddley playing a Greek Wedding. This is a danceable tune if you don’t think too much. Dave Morgan on baritone sax and Rob Susman on trombone are the soloists.

July Groove/September Funk: Noel Cohen and Dave Morgan co-authored this tribute to the slick funkiness of the seventies. Building from an easy rhythm section groove featuring Noel’s sly guitar to a trombone/tenor tune, July/September reflects on the lazy days of summer meeting the first coolness of autumn. Bryan Davis’ fiery trumpet and Charles Lee’s soulful alto solos light up the track.

What Barney? (The Barney Miller Theme): The melodic line from the long running television series Barney Miller is one of the most iconic themes for electric bass players, although it bears a striking resemblance to a riff at the end of James Taylor’s “Rock and Roll is Music Now”. Set to a hip-hop beat, the material has been inspired by “Barney” and also by brief quotes from Miles Davis’ trumpet solo from ‘So What’. The soloists, Dave Morgan on baritone sax, Noel Cohen on guitar, Stan Killian on tenor sax, and Seneca Black on trumpet gradually take the feel from Hip Hop to Rock to Jazz to…something else?

Summertime: This George Gershwin tune is one of the most iconic standards in the Great American Songbook. Trumpeter Chris Anderson arranged this piece starting with a Santana style Latin Rock beat that morphs into a traditional Conjunto. John Isley plays the tenor solo followed by Chris Anderson on trumpet. The rhythm section shows off some Latin music street cred as well.

Into the Fourth Dimension: the title is a double entendre, conflating the musical interval of a perfect Fourth and the notion of traveling to another element of time and space. Are those two things really that different anyway? Rhythmic rigidity and free Jazz went on a blind date. Composer Rob Susman originally wrote this is as an homage to mid-century sci fi movies and television shows but is also a vehicle for trumpet soloist Seneca Black and the dynamic rhythm section.

Professional Development: Opening with a Dan Asher bass solo, Professional Development is Dave Morgan’s second-line commentary on ongoing education. It’s a conversation between varied combinations of the horns, punctuated by Peter Grant’s sizzling snare and Noel’s infectious groove. Stan Killian’s muscular tenor sax and Jordan Hirsch’s plunger trumpet solos are featured. Professional Development features angular lines and concludes with saxes melting down.

Rock Bottom: Guitarist Noel Cohen invited Rob Susman to do some writing. Noel had more ideas than Rob could keep up with. The Edgar Winter ‘Frankenstein’ inspired opening, hard driving main riff and Allman Brothers influenced Afro-Cuban rock section exist in a marriage of Noel’s gift for melody and Rob’s skills as an arranger and orchestrator. Chris Hemingway on alto sax and Noel Cohen on guitar are the soloists.

Blue Jay Way: We all need to go on a magical mystery tour once in a while. George Harrison’s 1967 psychedelic masterpiece blurs the lines between major and minor chords and somehow puts the fog of being semi awake into musical terms. This arrangement by Rob Susman features a trumpet solo by Chris Anderson, a funky lounge groove, Hindustani tablas, and of course a bit of psychedelia. Rob Susman is the trombone soloist.

I Feel Free: a “live” crowd pleaser, arranged by Dave Morgan. A tribute to the late, great Ginger Baker – a state of mind articulated by lyricist Peter Brown – a perfect setting for Seneca Black’s lyrical lead trumpet playing – a chance for a little saxophonic doo-wop – a bonfire of dueling alto saxes Chris Hemingway and Charles Lee; I Feel Free is all of these! Opening with Dave’s bari sax groove and closing with a little Funk Shui NYC vocal, “I Feel Free” is designed to let us do just that.

Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky: Allen Toussaint gives us life coaching by example with this song. In this retro lounge inspired arrangement by Rob Sussman, Rob plays the catchy title chant on trombone and is soon joined by section mate Scott Burrows. After a conversation between the two trombonists, Rex Benincasa and Peter Grant show off their funkiness on percussion and drums respectively.

In his 16-year career with the Yankees, Williams was a four-time World Series Champion and a five-time All Star. Throughout his Yankees years, his passion for music never waned. In 2003, he released his first album, The Journey Within, which featured fusions of jazz, rock and the tropical rhythms of his heritage. It was met with strong critical praise and instant chart success. Williams raised his game further with his second album, Moving Forward, featuring guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Jon Secada, Dave Koz, and an all-star cast of studio musicians. The album was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Album.

Michelle DellaFave and Company will present a musical tale. In this song-filled tarradiddle, you will find  Michelle playing a lovely young songbird who, because of too much pressure from those around her and a desire to be set free, decides to set her sights on distant lands far from home, hoping to escape the real world. Watching an Italian film noire, with a haunting sound track, that she just can’ seem to get out of her mind, she decides to make her way out of the city, solo no less, to find love and some interesting adventures south of the boarder.

The cast of course includes Michelle DellaFave, from the Dean Martin Show, who sang and danced with Dean Martin and while working with him, enjoyed his many antics for years. “He was so very funny,” claims Michelle. After all, how can anyone be serious singing with “The Golddiggers,” then onward and upward to become a lead singer of a four-gal troupe known as “The Dingaling Sisters,” performing weekly on his show.  Eventually she was featured on Dean’s show as a solo singer.

Michelle has traveled across the country doing nightclubs to Equity plays. Now, settled in New York City, she just can’t stop singing. She is a soloist at St. Mark’s Church, and often sings patriotic songs for veteran events. Loving all genres, and with a father who was a drummer, that Latin beat has caught her feet. Michelle produced several albums and singles including “Cool Burn,” “Transformed,” and “Freedom Angel.” Her passion for supporting veterans began while performing with Bob Hope and his USO World Tours.

Happy to be returning to the stage at The Triad this time with the music and script penned by Carolyn Steinberg, also an outstanding musician on flute.
Playing the very debonair and very desirable male interest  in “South To Brazil” is Dorian Lake.  Vocalist, percussionist, composer and arranger, Dorian has broad experience in many styles, forms and genres of music.
On percussion is the talented Chacho Ramirez. Michelle brings bassist Michael O’Brien to the stage.  On piano, and electric organ and jungle sounds… is Jason Yeager

So it’s Thursday, March 57pm why not go out after a long day, chill and have a few laughs and some great music  with Michelle  and Company as she goes South To Brazil. Sit back and enjoy your cocktail, with an eclectic mix of lively Latin beats and sweet love songs.

The 48th season of the popular Highlights In Jazz continues on March 19, 2020, when producer Jack Kleinsinger presents “Ellington Everlasting.” The concert turns the spotlight on the maestro’s timeless compositions and enduring legacy, through the dynamic vision of featured performers like trombonist Art Baron & The Duke’s Men, drummer Bernard Purdie, bassist Bill Crow, saxophonists Bill Easley and Mark Hynes, pianist James Weidman and vocalist Ira Hawkins. In keeping with the beloved HIJ tradition, a surprise special guest will be on hand for the concert, to be held at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center.

Each season, a Highlights In Jazz event focuses on the music of one of the departed geniuses of the genre. It’s hard to think of anyone worthier of the honor than this year’s pick, the legendary pianist and composer Duke Ellington, one of the most influential figures in jazz. As Ellington famously said, “There are simply two kinds of music: Good music, and the other kind.” There’s no doubt which category his contributions fall into, and listeners continue to enjoy his music more than 45 years after his death.

Ellington sparked international interest in “American Music,” his preferred term for his art, playing more than 20,000 gigs outside the U.S. during his half-century-long career. He wrote or co-wrote more than 3,000 compositions including beloved standards such as “Mood Indigo,” “Caravan,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Solitude,” “Sophisticated Lady,” and “C Jam Blues.” Ellington’s tunes have been used in hundreds movies, TV shows and stage presentations, with the elegant bandleader sometimes making onscreen appearances himself. He  garnered countless awards and honors, including a Pulitzer Prize, 13 Grammys, the President’s Gold Medal, the Medal of Freedom, and the French Legion of Honor. Duke even appeared on a postage stamp.

Trombonist Art Baron joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1973, and was the last trombonist Ellington ever hired. Since then Art has performed and appeared on hundreds of recordings with Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Bruce Springsteen, George Gruntz, Mel Tormé, Frank Wess, David Sanborn, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, Sam Rivers, Lou Reed, James Taylor, John Legend, and others. The trombonist regularly fronts his own ensembles, including The Duke’s Men, which often comprises alumni from Ellington’s orchestra.

When producer Jack Kleinsinger says that drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie “played with just about everybody,” it’s no exaggeration. Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson Five, Isaac Hayes, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Donny Hathaway, Herbie Mann, Albert Ayler, Herbie Hancock, and Eddie Palmieri are on the list, as are Gene Ammons, Dizzy Gillespie, Leon Thomas, David “Fathead” Newman, Shirley Scott and Hank Crawford. That’s just the tip of the iceberg: The energetic octogenarian, whom Rolling Stone has ranked among its top 20 drummers of all time, is said to be the most recorded drummer in history, appearing on more than 4,000 albums. He’s even penned a memoir, Let the Drums Speak!, about his experiences. This concert will be the legendary stick man’s third Highlights In Jazz appearance.

Bassist Bill Crow has encyclopedic knowledge of jazz history, much of it based on personal experience. An avid photographer, he even has pix dating to the 1950s to illustrate his treasure trove of tales. Bill has held down bass clef duties with Stan Getz, Claude Thornhill (including playing arrangements Gil Evans wrote for the band), Marian McPartland, Gerry Mulligan, Benny Goodman, Mose Allison, Roger Kellaway, Al Jarreau, Carol Sloane, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Clark Terry, Anita O’Day and others. He ranks a 1958 concert he played with Duke Ellington’s orchestra as one of the greatest thrills of his life. Bill has published two books about his musical experiences, as well as countless columns, articles and tributes.

As a jazz musician, Jay Brandford has traveled the world and/or recorded with Ron Carter, Gerald Wilson, Mercer Ellington, Jon Hendricks, Ben Riley, David Liebman, the David Berger Jazz Orchestra, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, and many others. Jay’s arrangements have been played and recorded by many artists including the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Jerry Dodgion’s Joy Of Sax, and the Westchester Jazz Orchestra. Around town, Jay co-leads the Scott Reeves – Jay Brandford Tentet. Twice he was a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition (1991 and 1997), and he placed 3rd in the 2017 BMI/Charlie Parker Composition Competition.  .

As a woodwind doubler, Jay has performed and/or recorded with a variety of entertainers including Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Cleo Laine, Tony Bennett, Barry Manilow, and Jay-Z. Jay was in the original Broadway productions The Color Purple, Billy Elliot: The Musical, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Honeymoon in Vegas, Shuffle Along, and Hello Dolly.

A resident of Chicago and Detroit before moving to the Big Apple, saxophonist Mark Hynes has played with David Berger, Rodney Whitaker, James Carter, Marcus Belgrave, Steven Bernstein, Britt Woodman, Jerome Richardson, Quincy Jones, Christian McBride, Craig Taborn, John Hendricks, Chaka Khan, The Duke’s Men and more. He’s also a respected educator, and leader of his own trios and quartets.

Pianist James Weidman’s credits include sharing the bandstand with players as diverse as Max Roach, Woody Herman, Archie Shepp, Joe Lovano, Jay Hoggard, Cassandra Wilson, Marty Ehrlich, Abbey Lincoln and Kevin Mahogany. James also has enjoyed a long-running musical partnership with saxophonist T.K. Blue, with whom he co-leads the band Taja. In addition to fronting a variety of ensembles—he’s released several albums as a leader—the pianist also appears regularly with The Duke’s Men and other bands.

Vocalist Ira Hawkins “is a wonderful singer, and this year we’re proud that he’s making his first appearance at Highlights In Jazz,” notes producer Jack Kleinsinger, who praises Ira’s deft touch and deep experience with the Ellington repertoire. The singer has often appeared with Mike Longo’s Big Band, and has developed a reputation as a versatile crowd pleaser who is equally at home with the blues, standards and ballads, able to add a personal twist to even the most familiar tune.

Kleinsinger always surprises audiences with unannounced special guests. In fact, the producer claims that at least a quarter of the special guests are a surprise even to him. “Players show up in the audience and we put them on,” Jack explains. “If I see them in the audience, they’re there at their own peril—I’ll get them onstage.” One case in point is “Everlasting Ellington” headliner Bernard Purdie: “He was in the audience one night when Roy Haynes was on stage. I went out and got Bernard and got him to sit in,” Jack recalls.

Dizzy Gillespie, Eubie Blake, Stan Getz, Carmen McRae and Maxine Sullivan are among the audience members recruited to sit in during the series’ early years. Throughout the 48 seasons of Highlights In Jazz, “We’ve been very lucky with guests. When someone was in town, they’d call me and make last-minute arrangements to show up. Musicians love the series and the jam is part of the tradition, which you don’t get at most other performances. It’s very exciting for the audience when a big name comes on stage unexpectedly.”

In addition to the annual tribute concert honoring a past master, each season the venerable Highlights In Jazz series includes a concert saluting to a living legend of jazz, as well as an all-star jam session bringing together respected jazz journeymen and the best of the up-and-coming young players. The 2020 season is no exception.

This year’s tribute takes place May 7, 2020, when Highlights In Jazz presents “A Salute to Roger Kellaway,” honoring the versatile pianist, composer and arranger. “Every year we honor a living jazz great—I want to salute them and show them how much we love their music while they’re still with us,” producer Jack Kleinsinger declares. Roger, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Nov. 1, 2019, is a remarkably versatile musician, having landed a Grammy, earned an Academy Award nomination, and penned the closing theme of the ground-breaking TV show All in the Family. NEA Jazz Master trumpeter Jimmy Owens, along with bassist Jay Leonhart, clarinetist/saxophonist Eddie Daniels and guitarist Roni Ben-Hur will gather at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center to pay tribute to the lauded pianist Roger Kellaway.

“The Return of the Jam Session” wraps up the 48th season on June 4, 2020. “This is a throwback to the old-school, all-star lineup on the bandstand, and combinations of people who have never played together before. It’s not what you’d get elsewhere,” Jack Kleinsinger says. Pianist Ted Rosenthal, saxophonists Peter and Will Anderson, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, drummer Victor Lewis, guitarist Frank Vignola and trumpeter Brian Lynch form the core ensemble, and a special guest will also be on hand to join in the fun.

Kleinsinger is proud that his Highlights In Jazz concerts have always attracted an audience of avid listeners. Each season he aims to present multiple facets of jazz: “We’ve done mainstream, Dixieland, swing, bebop; not avant-garde, not far-out, nothing that will scare anybody,” the producer explains. And with the series’ half-century mark just a couple of years away he continues to produce well-received events spotlighting the finest players from across multiple generations. “There are amazingly wonderful players out there and we want to feature them!”

You won’t want to miss a single show!

“The best of Brazilian Popular music /Bossa Nova/Samba”     If you’re looking for the best of popular music, Bossa Nova style, look no more. Come to Birdland, famed Jazz club, to see the cream of the crop, MARCOS VALLE, and his ‘very’ Special guests, LEILA PINHEIRO and DOM SALVADOR, a feast’!

Produced by Pat Philips-Stratta

Valle is without a doubt one of the major songwriters of Brazilian popular music of his generation, having written over 300 songs recorded by greats Sarah Vaughan, Chicago, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Toots Thielemans, and so many more, known as one of Brazil’s most important talents. Valle tours at major festivals and concert halls around the world.  Top singers such as stars Caetano Veloso & Maria Bethania have recorded his songs. He has received many awards for his enormous talent.

With a ‘Latin Grammy ‘ nomination  in 2011 and solid career spanning 40 years, Leila Pinheiro is a singer, and instrumentalist, with a broad interpretative  range which marks her personal style on every Brazilian musical style on which she performs .  The greatest Brazilian musicians of all time have worked with her such as Maestro Tom Jobim, Brazilian guitarist Toninho , and American guitarist Pat Metheny.

Regarding the invitation to be a Special Guest of Marcos Valle at Birdland, Pinheiro says ‘he’s a very dear friend and a great composer with special reverence in my career…joining him on stage in always a great honor.”

Dom Salvador has been one of the most influential figures in the history of Brazilian music. Early in his career, the 70’s in Brazil, he had become a major player in samba-soul, a Brazilian twist on American funk.  He moved to Rio and formed the Rio 65 Trio..which melded his improvisational talent with Brazilian rhythms.  In this period , he probably played on more than 1000 recordings and performed on the most renowned stages.  But he gave it up and moved to New York to be a Jazz musician.   He has performed for the likes of George Benson, Tony Bennett , Frank Sinatra and Herbie Hancock  Salvador,a quiet man, Brazilian music legend, who has been hiding in plain sight playing at The River Café in Brooklyn for over 40 years.   Birdland has the honor to  present Dom Salvador as part of BossaBrasil,  a rare appearance on a  New York stage,   something you don’t want to miss.

All this plus: the very talented Patricia Alves/Vocalist, Renato Massa/Drums , Jesse Sadoc/Trumpet, Roni Ben-Hur/Guitar, and Leo Traversa on Bass.

Stephen Graham, marlbank.net (UK) 2019

Now, praised as “a jewel of European jazz vocals” by the French radio station, TSF, having recorded numerous albums with many wonderful musicians including Gary Peacock, Bob Moses, Naná Vasconcelos, Diego Figueiredo and Marcos Suzano, and esteemed by colleagues like Bobby McFerrin, Lee Konitz or Jay Clayton, the adventurous pearl fisher sailed from Berlin to Brooklyn for her new album PEARLS (released 2019) including Jamire Williams (dr), Leo Genovese (p), Burniss Travis (b) and Céline’s soulmate Lionel Loueke (git).

.

Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 7:30pm is the day/date and time for the performance of
Willie Martinez and La Familia Sextet.

All tickets are $10 except all students are admitted free at the door.
The box office opens at 6:30pm the evening of the performance.
Online purchase with a $2.50 service charge per ticket is available at
www.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ticketing.html

Orange Hall is located at the corner of Wawayanda & Grandview Avenues
(GPS: 24 Grandview Avenue), Middletown, NY. Questions may be directed to Cultural Affairs at (845)341-4891 and cultural@sunyorange.edu. Also, visit the Cultural Affairs website at www.sunyorange.edu/culturalaffairs

No Strings, which was one of the hits of the 1961-’62 theatrical season, is a show that everyone interested in the history of musical theater should see – a work that is cited as hugely important on many levels (some social) yet which is almost never staged. (This is only the second production I know of since I have been coming to the theater, and I too am a product of the 1961-’62 theatrical season.)
As everyone knows, this is the first show that Richard Rodgers wrote after the death of his second long time collaborator, Oscar Hammerstein, and the only full-length Broadway show for which he penned the lyrics as well as the music. It was also notable that he succeeded on his own where he had failed with Hammerstein in writing a contemporary urban story set in the present day – all of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein works (except State Fair) took place either long ago or far away or involve a heavily element of cross cultural exotica (Westerners in Asia, in South Pacific and The King and I, Asians in America, in Flower Drum Song). Every time they wrote a modern-day show in current day America (Allegro, Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream), the result was an epic flop. Unlike No Strings, the seven major R&H hits were all based on existing plays, novels, or stories; none of Hammerstein’s completely original scenarios ever got off the ground.

No Strings was something of a false spring for Rodgers, and its triumphs – both that he successfully wrote his own lyrics and that the show was an indisputed hit and money-maker (in both New York and London) – were never fully repeated. As a lyricist, Rodgers himself had none of the familiar poetic optimism of Hammerstein nor the signature bittersweet cynicism of Hart, but he got the job done. While all the music is at Rodgers’s usual high level, with his familiar counterpoint and a bewitching use of modulations (and even a dramatic minor-to-major switch on the opener, “The Sweetest Sounds”), some of the lyrics would have benefited from the give-and-take that was the hallmark of the composer’s collaborative process. “Loads of Love,” in particular, seems half-finished: “I just want money, a nice position,” is the kind of awkward, non-specific line that neither Hart nor Hammerstein would have been satisfied with.
Contrastingly, the two best known songs, “The Sweetest Sounds” (famously later sung by Judy Garland) and “Look No Further” show that Rodgers, when he wanted, could take the time to get something perfect all by himself. (Indeed, the score won Rodgers a Tony award.) “Look No Further” is one of the greatest-ever lyrics to a Rodgers melody, making an especially use of catchy rhyming and repeated words at the ending and beginning of lines, ie,

“Look no further, be still,
Don’t move an inch away, stay!
Stay with one who loves you,
Look no further, dear.”

(Incidentally if you have never heard the 1962 recording by Nat King Cole, arranged and conducted by Ralph Carmichael, you’re depriving yourself of the great pleasures of life. It’s included in the Broadway to Main Street podcast that is linked below.)

What also distinguishes No Strings from the Hammerstein shows in particular is how the characters exist in a wholly different moral universe from anything Hammerstein could have imagined. Rodgers and book writer Samuel Taylor a leading man and a woman who, as the author of those early shows would have probably judged, were compromised morally: a successful African American model who nonetheless lets a rich, older white man support her and a prize-winning novelist who refuses to write anything new as he instead couch-surfs his way across Europe.

In 1943, Rodgers and Hammerstein introduced a raft of new ideas to musical theater that they proceeded to play with like kids with a new box of toys: songs that advance the story, songs that delineated character, the integration of dance into the action. In 1962, Rodgers is playing with a new set of toys, more social than dramatic, he seems delighted to give us a story (admittedly more true of Europe in 1962 than America) in which black people and white people can interact as equals (and this was a dramatist who consistently advocated for what was then called “tolerance” in his work) and is no less delighted with the prospect of a world where women have total agency in both their professional and personal lives. Both racial and gender equality are like shiny new toys for Rodgers and book writer Samuel Taylor to play with.

Alas, although No Strings was a huge hit in 1962, yet no one ever chose to revive it (except City Center! Encores in 2003, and it was hardly one of their better productions).  Further, because of the multi-racial nature of the romantic relationship at the center (Keyonna Knight and Cameron Bond are the highlights of the current J2 production), Rodgers was well aware that there would never be a movie or TV adaptation. Ultimately, all those familiar R & H stories of far away and / or long ago were easier to bring back to later generations, since they were deliberately out-of-step with the current moment. It’s a remarkable show, one that should be seen – and more importantly heard – that is somehow both a footnote and a milestone all at the same time.

Staci Griesbach: My Patsy Cline Songbook

Join us at the Birdland Theater for Vocalist Staci Griesbach performing Full – Length jazz tribute to Patsy Cline!

STACI GRIESBACH PRESENTS: MY PATSY CLINE SONGBOOK (A JAZZ TRIBUTE)

Vocalist Staci Griesbach presents My Patsy Cline Songbook featuring contemporary jazz arrangements of country music icon Patsy Cline’s biggest hits including “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces” and her first national hit “Walkin’ After Midnight,” in which ROLLING STONE called Griesbach’s single “a gorgeous jazz interpretation.” Sprinkled with nods to the Great American Songbook by arrangers like the incredible Tamir Hendelman (Barbra Streisand), Griesbach’s performance draws audiences in with charm and charisma presenting these recognizable classics that defy genre.

Griesbach presents Patsy Cline like you haven’t heard her before. Jazz heavyweight magazine Downbeat says “Griesbach achieves her aim of paying tribute not through imitation, but by exploring new possibilities through new artistry.” In fact, Cline’s daughter Julie Fudge welcomed these different interpretations of her Mom’s classic hits, adding, “These arrangements are new and fresh and so engaging… I truly think Mom would have listened to this collection.”

“An album worthy of being added to the Great American Songbook,” (No Depression), Griesbach’s MY PATSY CLINE SONGBOOK takes fans on a journey through songs Patsy Cline made famous by some of Nashville’s most renown songwriters including Hank Cochran, Harlan Howard, Bill Monroe, Willie Nelson and more. These prolific American songwriters contributed greatly to the Nashville Sound – arguably in the same way Irving Berlin and Cole Porter contributed to the foundation of jazz standards that exist today. Similarly, Patsy Cline has arguably shaped and influenced nearly every female country singer today, much as Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday had in the jazz landscape. Staci presents an opportunity to consider exploring more than one Great American Songbook, cross-pollinating jazz styling with country music lyrics and melody. “My Patsy Cline Songbook” marks the first full-length Patsy Cline tribute album presented in a jazz and contemporary style.

This ongoing anthology series uses the crucial idea of other “variety show” presentations (like Susie Mosher’s “The Line-up”) in that, unlike “Cast Party,” which is a true “open mic” event, “Vocal Mania” is completely curated, the artists and the songs they’re singing are worked out beforehand, so it lacks the randomness that represents both the worst and the best of “Cast Party.” It’s hosted by two veteran vocalists who are highly accustomed to working with other singers, Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer and Lauren Kinhan of the New York Voices. Produced monthly by Charles Carlini, the series has run for over a year now both at the Zinc Bar down as well as the sumptuous space at the Birdland Theater. “Vocal Mania” worth attending right off the bat for the two co-hostesses alone, but the line-up of guests, both surprise and otherwise, makes it even more so. (And the rhythm section, bassist Boris Kazloff, drummer Vince Cherico, and the brilliant pianist John DiMartino can handle anything that any of these singers can throw at it.) Chances are that every time you attend, you’ll hear something extraordinary – something that you never heard before.

Lately, producer Charles Carlini has been alternating the Vocal Mania series between Birdland and the Zinc bar, down the street from The Blue Note. Though there’s nothing wrong with the Zinc, I nevertheless get the feeling that the two hosts / producers / stars save their very best guests for Birdland. Case in point, this month’s featured attraction is Lemvig, Denmark’s gift to the jazz world, the lithe and lively singer Sinne Eeg. Her latest album, with the Danish Jazz Orchestra, We’ve Just Begun, actually begins 2020 with some bang-up listening. (My favorite number is “Hvorfor er lykken så lunefuldm,” though I confess I have no idea what it means.) Alas, she won’t have the full orchestra with her in the Birdland Theater, but that one-man-orchestra known as John DiMartino will be well up to the challenge. Does anybody know how to say, “One more time!” (or even “Opa! Opa!”) in Danish?

Both programs will showcase a wide variety of styles and celebrate the works of such composers as Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Sammy Nestico.  The concert will begin with a performance by the Mamaroneck High School “A” Jazz band under the direction of Mr. Timothy Hooker.

Tickets will be sold at the door and will cost $20 for adults and $5 for students.

For any questions and inquiries please do not hesitate to contact us via e-mail at jmullen@mamkschools.org

Hope to see you at the concert on March 13th.

“Carlos Barbosa-Lima’s Delicado continues Zoho Music‘s pursuit of the finest South American music in contemporary jazz. This is a fantastic guitar recording, to put it succinctly, and credit should be given to Del Casale, the producer.

The “variety show” is the latest format that’s coming to all the major clubs like Birdland, Feinstein’s / 54 Below, and the Green Room; as the title suggests, it aggregates a variety of performers, mostly singers (and mostly Broadway-oriented), but also more than a few jazz artists and / or comedians. What distinguishes the variety show idea from the more familiar “open mic” format (of which Jim Caruso’s “Cast Party” at Birdland remains the gold standard) is that all the acts are curated by the host / producer in advance, which still means some pleasant surprises for the audience but, hopefully. no disappointments for anybody. Hosted by comedian and singer Susie Mosher (rhymes with “kosher”), who might be described as the emminently-likable Lesbian love child of Carol Burnett and Jackie Hoffman, “The Line-Up,” holds forth on Tuesdays in the late-ish slot (9:30 PM) at Birdland. It represents the younger and more LGBT-centric side of Birdland; the patrons at The Line-Up often seem like the nieces and nephews of those of us veteran Birdlanders digging vintage bebop upstairs. So far I’ve only been a few times, but I remain highly impressed by the general high quality of the performances, and especially by Ms. Mosher herself, she seems to have launched a vogue for multiple threat artists who, with the considerable help of musical director Brad Simmons, can sing and simultaneously improvise spontaneous comedy routines in verse. Highly recommended.

Tonight’s line-up at the Line-Up promises to be an especially rich and rewarding one, thanks to not one but two brilliant power-duos: the remarkable, highly-harmonious Ladybugs (Martina DaSilva & Vanessa Perea), and the scintillating team of Marta Sanders and Leanne Borghesi, whose duo show remains one of the most entertaining hours I have ever spent at the Birdland.

A fourth-generation musician, Bill Easley plays saxophone, flute and clarinet. Over the years he made his mark on the road and on recordings with the likes George Benson, Isaac Hayes, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Bobby Short, Grady Tate, Ron Carter, Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath, and in big bands fronted by John Lewis, David Baker, Wynton Marsalis and Jon Faddis. The versatile musician has also played about a dozen Broadway shows and released a generous handful of albums as a leader.
