A difficult group to classify, the J.C. Hopkins Biggish Band (a small big band or a large jazz combo) is a forward-looking swing ensemble that has been a regular feature at the historic Minton’s Playhouse every Saturday night for several years. The title of New York Moment, J.C. Hopkins’ latest project, is described by the composer in this way: “People say that a New York minute is really just a second, a split second, whereas a New York Moment transcends time. It’s when time stops. It’s when the trumpet player plays an otherworldly melody, or when the saxophonist wails like a wild duck creating a sense of tumult in an already tumultuous world, or when the singer sings just the right notes as the band lays down a lush chord. And it’s so beautiful that it resonates in your soul.”

His new recording, New York Moment, has J.C. Hopkins’ originals and the arrangements of tenor-saxophonist Drew Vandewinkle for the spirited group. Featured in key spots are five singers. Nico Sarbanes, who is also an excellent trumpeter, is in the spotlight on the uptempo “We Can Change The World” and “Lulu” (taking a particularly memorable trumpet solo on the latter), and sharing the vocals with Joy Hanson in winning style on the love song “Beguiled” and “What Would You Say.” Ms. Hanson is also heard on the quietly sensuous “The Wonderful Things To Come” and the ballad “Close Your Eyes.” Vanisha Gould adds to the New Orleans party atmosphere of “One Of Those Days” with her jubilant singing and puts plenty of honest emotion into “Sublime Beauty.” Shawn Whitehorn uplifts the medium-tempo love song “Oh, Kitty” while Alicyn Yaffee excels on the lowdown blues “The Children Will Lead Us.”

The Biggish Band also has its opportunities to be featured throughout the diverse material with an instrumental version of Charles Mingus’ “Better Git It In Your Soul” having some joyfully wild ensembles and passionate playing by altoist Julian Pressley. J.C. Hopkins moved from his hometown of San Francisco in 2000 to Brooklyn where he soon formed the JC Hopkins Biggish Band. His singer in the early days was the then-unknown Norah Jones. After her phenomenal success, she was succeeded by a long list of other great jazz vocalists including Madeleine Peyroux, Queen Esther, Jazzmeia Horn, Alicia Olatuja, and Brianna Thomas. Hopkins, whose song “Dreams Come True” was recorded as a duet by Willie Nelson and Norah Jones, recorded his first album with his band, Underneath A Brooklyn Moon, in 2005. 2017’s Meet Me At Minton’s (which has guest spots for Jon Hendricks, Andy Bey and Jazzmeia Horn) celebrates the Biggish Band’s long-time Saturday night residency at Minton’s Playhouse, the historic club where early 1940s jam sessions featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and others helped form bebop. Hopkins is also Minton’s long-time music programmer.

New York Moment is the J.C. Hopkins Biggish Band’s finest recording to date and shows just how much the music is swinging at Minton’s Playhouse in the 21st century.

Funk Shui NYC is a sassy, lively, quirky New York based large ensemble which irreverently mixes jazz with funk, classic rock and film music influences, in five band member originals and five spectacular arrangements of songs by George Harrison, Cream, George Gershwin and Allen Toussaint.

New York City can be loud, dense, and funky. It can make you smile and want to dance. It also has a unique beauty and energy. Funk Shui NYC plays music that represents this great metropolis. Listeners hear in the first note that the band enjoys playing together. After several years of playing in groups as sidemen, we – Dave Morgan and Rob Susman – saw an opportunity to make our own music that was current, relevant, intricate, and a blast.

We were able to attract players who are technically skilled and creatively minded. Oh yeah, we also didn’t want to be so serious all the time. Funk Shui NYC is an ‘all-star band’ in the sense that its members have impressive performing credits, but the roster wasn’t selected for status. The musicians are our friends, collaborators, and each other’s fans. After a few years of playing in New York City night clubs, we decided to record some of the material. On Funk Shui NYC’s ZOHO debut recording, Shark NATO on a Plane, you will hear new compositions, arrangements and solos that represent the pride, joy and humor of Funk Shui NYC’s members.

Shark NATO on a Plane: Composer Rob Susman started with a pun laden title before any music was written. Inspired by Hollywood film comedy horror, its content is exaggerated until it reaches a farcical climax. The 1950’s style radio jingle theme rhythmically turns on itself. The groove blends Latin, Rock and odd street beat rhythms. It’s like Bo Diddley playing a Greek Wedding. This is a danceable tune if you don’t think too much. Dave Morgan on baritone sax and Rob Susman on trombone are the soloists.

July Groove/September Funk: Noel Cohen and Dave Morgan co-authored this tribute to the slick funkiness of the seventies. Building from an easy rhythm section groove featuring Noel’s sly guitar to a trombone/tenor tune, July/September reflects on the lazy days of summer meeting the first coolness of autumn. Bryan Davis’ fiery trumpet and Charles Lee’s soulful alto solos light up the track.

What Barney? (The Barney Miller Theme): The melodic line from the long running television series Barney Miller is one of the most iconic themes for electric bass players, although it bears a striking resemblance to a riff at the end of James Taylor’s “Rock and Roll is Music Now”. Set to a hip-hop beat, the material has been inspired by “Barney” and also by brief quotes from Miles Davis’ trumpet solo from ‘So What’. The soloists, Dave Morgan on baritone sax, Noel Cohen on guitar, Stan Killian on tenor sax, and Seneca Black on trumpet gradually take the feel from Hip Hop to Rock to Jazz to…something else?

Summertime: This George Gershwin tune is one of the most iconic standards in the Great American Songbook. Trumpeter Chris Anderson arranged this piece starting with a Santana style Latin Rock beat that morphs into a traditional Conjunto. John Isley plays the tenor solo followed by Chris Anderson on trumpet. The rhythm section shows off some Latin music street cred as well.

Into the Fourth Dimension: the title is a double entendre, conflating the musical interval of a perfect Fourth and the notion of traveling to another element of time and space. Are those two things really that different anyway? Rhythmic rigidity and free Jazz went on a blind date. Composer Rob Susman originally wrote this is as an homage to mid-century sci fi movies and television shows but is also a vehicle for trumpet soloist Seneca Black and the dynamic rhythm section.

Professional Development: Opening with a Dan Asher bass solo, Professional Development is Dave Morgan’s second-line commentary on ongoing education. It’s a conversation between varied combinations of the horns, punctuated by Peter Grant’s sizzling snare and Noel’s infectious groove. Stan Killian’s muscular tenor sax and Jordan Hirsch’s plunger trumpet solos are featured. Professional Development features angular lines and concludes with saxes melting down.

Rock Bottom: Guitarist Noel Cohen invited Rob Susman to do some writing. Noel had more ideas than Rob could keep up with. The Edgar Winter ‘Frankenstein’ inspired opening, hard driving main riff and Allman Brothers influenced Afro-Cuban rock section exist in a marriage of Noel’s gift for melody and Rob’s skills as an arranger and orchestrator. Chris Hemingway on alto sax and Noel Cohen on guitar are the soloists.

Blue Jay Way: We all need to go on a magical mystery tour once in a while. George Harrison’s 1967 psychedelic masterpiece blurs the lines between major and minor chords and somehow puts the fog of being semi awake into musical terms. This arrangement by Rob Susman features a trumpet solo by Chris Anderson, a funky lounge groove, Hindustani tablas, and of course a bit of psychedelia. Rob Susman is the trombone soloist.

I Feel Free: a “live” crowd pleaser, arranged by Dave Morgan. A tribute to the late, great Ginger Baker – a state of mind articulated by lyricist Peter Brown – a perfect setting for Seneca Black’s lyrical lead trumpet playing – a chance for a little saxophonic doo-wop – a bonfire of dueling alto saxes Chris Hemingway and Charles Lee; I Feel Free is all of these! Opening with Dave’s bari sax groove and closing with a little Funk Shui NYC vocal, “I Feel Free” is designed to let us do just that.

Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky: Allen Toussaint gives us life coaching by example with this song. In this retro lounge inspired arrangement by Rob Sussman, Rob plays the catchy title chant on trombone and is soon joined by section mate Scott Burrows. After a conversation between the two trombonists, Rex Benincasa and Peter Grant show off their funkiness on percussion and drums respectively.

Kerry PolitzerDiagonal: A Tribute To Durval Ferreira

The pianist recruits several of her talented Pacific Northwest colleagues for this album of pieces by a Brazilian composer whose works were central to the rise of the music that became known as bossa nova. Ferreira’s “O Gato,” “E Nada Mais” and other compositions not only entered the mainstream in his country but were also embraced by American performers, among them Cannonball Adderley, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Mann and Stan Getz. Politzer’s colleagues here are Portland and Seattle mainstays. John Nastos shines in solos on clarinet, flute and alto saxophone. Ben Graves is prominent on acoustic and electric guitars. George Colligan, a star pianist in the region, on this occasion plays drums and manages to be both subtle and vigorous. He is assisted on three tracks by percussionist Simon Lucas. Politzer contributes three compositions in tribute to Ferreira, including “Chorino No. 2,” which has her fleet piano solo and rippling clarinet by Nastos. She proves her multi-lingual mettle singing Ferreira’s “Moca Flor” in Portuguese and “The Day It Rained” in English. Diagonal–now soft and reflective, now compellingly swinging–could launch a welcome new breakout of bossa nova.

CÉLINE RUDOLPH
“I love the adrenaline, the here and now, the surprise and the power which the stage grants me.” –

Vocalist and composer Céline Rudolph glides between Berlin, São Paulo, Paris and New York, between tongues and genres, always landing in the very heart of music. Céline is beyond happy to return to New York and play two concerts with different inspiring line-ups: one night with her quartet feat. longtime piano partner Helio Alves and a second night with Brazilian jazz guitarist Vinícius Gomes and Massimo Biolacati on bass.

“One of the jazz vocals records of the year without a shadow of a doubt and the main reason for this beyond her fine voice is the quality of the compositional arc and great sweep of style at play throughout.“
Stephen Graham, marlbank.net (UK) 2019

Céline Rudolph particularly enjoys the line-up with these incredibly inspiring musicians because she feels that it truly allows her to connect the ease and natural flow of Brazilian rhythm with the great jazz tradition, and her own songs and compositions recently released on her album PEARLS (2019). Above all, these bands pulsate with the rather effortless vocal and improvisational artistry of Céline Rudolph, which includes exciting rhythmic inspirations, highly sophisticated melodic improvisations and fascinating sound poetry.

„Music is like breathing, it was there ever since I could remember“ Céline Rudolph says and recollects how her father always played a break when jamming on the guitar, so that there was a space for his children to create improvised lines or percussive fills. Born in Berlin and raised with her parents’ rich record collection, the daughter of a Frenchwoman from Bordeaux and a cosmopolitan musical enthusiast from Berlin, picked up the piano and started composing as an autodidact, then started writing French songs on the guitar, which became her main tool of expression. Later, she studied vocal jazz and composition at Hochschule der Künste Berlin with mentors David Friedman, Jerry Granelli, Kirk Nurock, Jay Clayton and Catherine Gayer. Soon, she plunged into African music and studied with the percussionist Famoudou Konaté in West Africa. Her love of Brazilian music led her to São Paulo where she met Rodolfo Stroeter who produced three of her albums and four tours across Europe and Brazil so far: The albums are BRAZAVENTURE, METAMORFLORES (enja records) and SALVADOR (Verve, Universal) which features New York based Brazilian pianist Helio Alves (2011).

Since 2015 she is collaborating with New York based Beninese guitarist Lionel Loueke, having recorded the duo album OBSESSION and then playing together at 12th Jarasum Int. Jazz Festival in South Korea. “This is a very unique project because there are no boundaries. I knew from the start that we are kind of from the same tribe,” says Lionel Loueke. Since then, the duo toured Europe, Asia and Africa. The album OBSESSION reached the annual list of the German Critics Award „Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik“, and won Céline Rudolph the prestigious German Jazz Award ECHO JAZZ 2018 for best jazz vocalist.

Now, praised as “a jewel of European jazz vocals” by the French radio station, TSF, having recorded numerous albums with many wonderful musicians including Gary Peacock, Bob Moses, Naná Vasconcelos, Diego Figueiredo and Marcos Suzano, and esteemed by colleagues like Bobby McFerrin, Lee Konitz or Jay Clayton, the adventurous pearl fisher sailed from Berlin to Brooklyn for her new album PEARLS (released 2019) including Jamire Williams (dr), Leo Genovese (p), Burniss Travis (b) and Céline’s soulmate Lionel Loueke (git).

Yes! The Nat King Cole centennial is still upon us! To celebrate the legacy of the remarkable artist who was simultaneously the most popular singer of his era and one of the all-time great jazz pianists, the GR42 has assembled two singing (and swinging) instrumentalists, pianist Dave Damaini and saxophonist Grace Kelly (who must of us know from the Stephen Colbert show band), and America’s Got Talent winner Landau Eugene Murphy. It promises to be quite a Trio, in honor of the man who led the most celebrated Trio in all of Jazz. And yes, your humble servant will be on hand to speak on the importance of the centennial man and introduce the proceedings, though it remains to be seen if that’s an asset or a liability.

“Carlos Barbosa-Lima’s Delicado continues Zoho Music‘s pursuit of the finest South American music in contemporary jazz. This is a fantastic guitar recording, to put it succinctly, and credit should be given to Del Casale, the producer. (I know I tend to give Zoho credit as a whole, but this is clearly a time when I need to single out the man with the plan.”

About Suzanna Ross

Suzanna Ross sings in New York City at jazz and cabaret venues. She has performed in NYC at many venues, including the Metropolitan Room, Don’t Tell Mama, Triad Theater, Pangea, TOMI Jazz, and for the Jazz Series at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning. She has also sung at New Jersey’s famed jazz club, Trumpets. Suzanna sings a wide range of music from jazz, French chansons, pop, to movie songs and Bossa Nova. Growing up in my mother’s living room, I heard all types of music on the radio, record player, television, and whenever my mother played the piano. They were the songs of her generation and her mother’s generation before her. They filled our living room with life, romance, a little mystery, and a lot of fun. Bewitched – not bothered, not bewildered, is a collection of some of my favorites. I’ve been singing these songs in my shows in New York City, and now I’d like to share them with you. They include jazz, French chansons, movie songs, retro 60s and beyond. Please join me in my mother’s living room – a place where there was always music and where everyone was welcome!

Bewitched – Not Bothered, Not Bewildered is the debut recording by singer Suzanna Ross, and it is difficult not to be impressed by both her inviting voice and her versatility. A New York-based vocalist who has performed at many jazz and cabaret venues, Ms. Ross gives one the impression that she could sing nearly anything and sound quite comfortable. Joined on this recording by pianist-arranger Gregory Toroian, bassist Skip Ward and drummer David Silliman, Suzanna Ross sings jazz standards, several songs in French, bossa novas, some offbeat pop songs, and tunes taken from films. While her repertoire ranges from Nat King Cole (“Come To Baby, Do”) to Herman’s Hermits (“There’s A Kind Of Hush”), she and her sympathetic sidemen (who offer solid and subtle support along with occasional solos) turn all of the music into jazz while not losing the essence of the original conceptions.

The program begins with a medium-tempo waltz version of Kenny Rankin’s “Haven’t We Met,” the theme from the television show “Bewitched” (which swings joyfully and has solo spots for each of the instrumentalists) and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Dreamer” which is given a tender interpretation. The playful “Ces petits riens,” a dramatic “Parlez-moi de lui,” “For me formidable” and even part of “Over The Rainbow” have Suzanna Ross singing quite effectively in French. She revives “Mr. Wonderful” (a nice song that should be sung more often), takes “Summer Me, Winter Me” at a faster pace than usual, and excels during an arrangement of “My Favorite Things” that alternates between ¾ and 4/4 time.

There are no throwaways on this set which includes a slow and somewhat touching version of “Laura,” the happy “Come to Baby, Do,” “Over The Rainbow,” the Australian rock song “Boomerang Baby” (which is given a groove reminiscent of “Fever”), “There’s A Kind Of Hush,” and the philosophical art song “Live For Life.”

Suzanna Ross is heard in winning form through her enjoyable set, an easily recommended CD that gives listeners the perfect opportunity to discover the warm singer.

Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers, students and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the modernist flame alive and pure, with a low flame burning in every note… [He’s] a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Ben-Hur – born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, now based in Harlem, New York – has released 11 albums as leader or co-leader, with Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” The Star-Ledger of New Jersey summed him up this way: “A deep musician, a storyteller, Ben-Hur works with a warm, glowing sound and has an alluring way of combining engaging notes with supple rhythm.”

NEW ALBUM RELEASE

shem.gif
Drummer Duduka Da Fonseca and pianist Helio Alves come from two different parts of Brazil but have done much over their careers to keep the tradition of Bossa Nova and Brazilian jazz alive. Here, they perform a program highlighting the beauty of his music alongside Maucha Adnet, who was a member of Jobim’s ensemble during the last ten years of his life. Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim also includes a stellar cast of musical greats and special appearances by trumpeters Wynton Marsalis and Claudio Roditi.
JAZZIZ

In fact, we continue do discover more about these innovators and their influence through albums like Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim, Da Fonseca and Alves contributes their own originals: Alves dynamic “Untitled” and frenetic “Helium,” and Da Fonseca’s intriguing outré “Alana.” These three modern tunes serve as a reminder that not all Brazilian jazz today is predicated on bossa and sambas, and that what Gilberto and Jobim started still unfolding all these years later.”
Suzanne Lorge . Downbeat Magazine

“Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim (Sunnyside) is headlined by three Brazilian jazz stars of recent years —drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, vocalist Maucha Adnet, and pianist Helio Alves. The presence of guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Hans Glawischnig and saxophonist Billy Drewes adds extra heft to the rhythm section and the ensemble’s versatility while the involvement of two notable guests—trumpeters Claudio Roditi and Wynton Marsalis—signals that something truly special is in the works.”
Mark Holston . All About Jazz

Duduka Da Fonseca plays drums with a stirring, sensuality. It’s like listening to crushed ice melt at the beach. Duduka’s latest album is Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim (Sunnyside), with pianist Helio Alves and vocalist Maucha Adnet.   The music is like listening to old friends deep in conversation. There’s also plenty of Brazilian soul and stardust, and a rainbow of moods. A lovely album.
JAZZWAX BY MARC MYERS

Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim finds the two at the top of their game, both honoring and pushing Brazilian jazz in bold directions. Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim is a labor of love from Alves and Da Fonseca. Their longtime relationship, developed through countless gigs and extended collaborations, fostered an undeniably deep and loving relationship with their musical forefathers.  Andy Jurik . Pop Matters

Since 2007, drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, pianist Helio Alves and vocalist Maucha Adnet have been presenting the titular program at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, and at other venues throughout the world. A concept set steeped in personalized history of varied sorts—Da Fonseca’s, absorbing this hybridized style at the foot of the masters in Brazil; Adnet’s and Da Fonseca’s, working with the late Antonio Carlos Jobim; Alves’ and Da Fonseca’s, playing together in bands in New York City for more than a quarter century—it’s a show that never fails to impress and inspire.  There’s still no substitute for seeing this band live—as this writer can attest, having had the pleasure on more than one occasion—but this is pretty damn close.

Staci Griesbach: My Patsy Cline Songbook

Join us at the Birdland Theater for Vocalist Staci Griesbach performing Full – Length jazz tribute to Patsy Cline!

STACI GRIESBACH PRESENTS: MY PATSY CLINE SONGBOOK (A JAZZ TRIBUTE)

Vocalist Staci Griesbach presents My Patsy Cline Songbook featuring contemporary jazz arrangements of country music icon Patsy Cline’s biggest hits including “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces” and her first national hit “Walkin’ After Midnight,” in which ROLLING STONE called Griesbach’s single “a gorgeous jazz interpretation.” Sprinkled with nods to the Great American Songbook by arrangers like the incredible Tamir Hendelman (Barbra Streisand), Griesbach’s performance draws audiences in with charm and charisma presenting these recognizable classics that defy genre.

Griesbach presents Patsy Cline like you haven’t heard her before. Jazz heavyweight magazine Downbeat says “Griesbach achieves her aim of paying tribute not through imitation, but by exploring new possibilities through new artistry.” In fact, Cline’s daughter Julie Fudge welcomed these different interpretations of her Mom’s classic hits, adding, “These arrangements are new and fresh and so engaging… I truly think Mom would have listened to this collection.”

“An album worthy of being added to the Great American Songbook,” (No Depression), Griesbach’s MY PATSY CLINE SONGBOOK takes fans on a journey through songs Patsy Cline made famous by some of Nashville’s most renown songwriters including Hank Cochran, Harlan Howard, Bill Monroe, Willie Nelson and more. These prolific American songwriters contributed greatly to the Nashville Sound – arguably in the same way Irving Berlin and Cole Porter contributed to the foundation of jazz standards that exist today. Similarly, Patsy Cline has arguably shaped and influenced nearly every female country singer today, much as Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday had in the jazz landscape. Staci presents an opportunity to consider exploring more than one Great American Songbook, cross-pollinating jazz styling with country music lyrics and melody. “My Patsy Cline Songbook” marks the first full-length Patsy Cline tribute album presented in a jazz and contemporary style.

Valle is without a doubt one of the major songwriters of Brazilian popular music of his generation, having written over 300 songs recorded by greats Sarah Vaughan, Chicago, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Toots Thielemans, and so many more, known as one of Brazil’s most important talents. Valle tours at major festivals and concert halls around the world.  Top singers such as stars Caetano Veloso & Maria Bethania have recorded his songs. He has received many awards for his enormous talent.

With a ‘Latin Grammy ‘ nomination  in 2011 and solid career spanning 40 years, Leila Pinheiro is a singer, and instrumentalist, with a broad interpretative  range which marks her personal style on every Brazilian musical style on which she performs .  The greatest Brazilian musicians of all time have worked with her such as Maestro Tom Jobim, Brazilian guitarist Toninho , and American guitarist Pat Metheny.

Regarding the invitation to be a Special Guest of Marcos Valle at Birdland, Pinheiro says ‘he’s a very dear friend and a great composer with special reverence in my career…joining him on stage in always a great honor.”

Dom Salvador has been one of the most influential figures in the history of Brazilian music. Early in his career, the 70’s in Brazil, he had become a major player in samba-soul, a Brazilian twist on American funk.  He moved to Rio and formed the Rio 65 Trio..which melded his improvisational talent with Brazilian rhythms.  In this period , he probably played on more than 1000 recordings and performed on the most renowned stages.  But he gave it up and moved to New York to be a Jazz musician.   He has performed for the likes of George Benson, Tony Bennett , Frank Sinatra and Herbie Hancock  Salvador,a quiet man, Brazilian music legend, who has been hiding in plain sight playing at The River Café in Brooklyn for over 40 years.   Birdland has the honor to  present Dom Salvador as part of BossaBrasil,  a rare appearance on a  New York stage,   something you don’t want to miss.

All this plus: the very talented Patricia Alves/Vocalist, Renato Massa/Drums , Jesse Sadoc/Trumpet, Roni Ben-Hur/Guitar, and Leo Traversa on Bass.

The 48th season of the popular Highlights In Jazz continues on March 19, 2020, when producer Jack Kleinsinger presents “Ellington Everlasting.” The concert turns the spotlight on the maestro’s timeless compositions and enduring legacy, through the dynamic vision of featured performers like trombonist Art Baron & The Duke’s Men, drummer Bernard Purdie, bassist Bill Crow, saxophonists Bill Easley and Mark Hynes, pianist James Weidman and vocalist Ira Hawkins. In keeping with the beloved HIJ tradition, a surprise special guest will be on hand for the concert, to be held at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center.

Each season, a Highlights In Jazz event focuses on the music of one of the departed geniuses of the genre. It’s hard to think of anyone worthier of the honor than this year’s pick, the legendary pianist and composer Duke Ellington, one of the most influential figures in jazz. As Ellington famously said, “There are simply two kinds of music: Good music, and the other kind.” There’s no doubt which category his contributions fall into, and listeners continue to enjoy his music more than 45 years after his death.

Ellington sparked international interest in “American Music,” his preferred term for his art, playing more than 20,000 gigs outside the U.S. during his half-century-long career. He wrote or co-wrote more than 3,000 compositions including beloved standards such as “Mood Indigo,” “Caravan,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Solitude,” “Sophisticated Lady,” and “C Jam Blues.” Ellington’s tunes have been used in hundreds of movies, TV shows and stage presentations, with the elegant bandleader sometimes making onscreen appearances himself. He  garnered countless awards and honors, including a Pulitzer Prize, 13 Grammys, the President’s Gold Medal, the Medal of Freedom, and the French Legion of Honor. Duke even appeared on a postage stamp.

Trombonist Art Baron joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1973, and was the last trombonist Ellington ever hired. Since then Art has performed and appeared on hundreds of recordings with Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Bruce Springsteen, George Gruntz, Mel Tormé, Frank Wess, David Sanborn, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, Sam Rivers, Lou Reed, James Taylor, John Legend, and others. The trombonist regularly fronts his own ensembles, including The Duke’s Men, which often comprises alumni from Ellington’s orchestra.

When producer Jack Kleinsinger says that drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie “played with just about everybody,” it’s no exaggeration. Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson Five, Isaac Hayes, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Donny Hathaway, Herbie Mann, Albert Ayler, Herbie Hancock, and Eddie Palmieri are on the list, as are Gene Ammons, Dizzy Gillespie, Leon Thomas, David “Fathead” Newman, Shirley Scott and Hank Crawford. That’s just the tip of the iceberg: The energetic octogenarian, whom Rolling Stone has ranked among its top 20 drummers of all time, is said to be the most recorded drummer in history, appearing on more than 4,000 albums. He’s even penned a memoir, Let the Drums Speak!, about his experiences. This concert will be the legendary stick man’s third Highlights In Jazz appearance.

Bassist Bill Crow has encyclopedic knowledge of jazz history, much of it based on personal experience. An avid photographer, he even has pix dating to the 1950s to illustrate his treasure trove of tales. Bill has held down bass duties with Stan Getz, Claude Thornhill (including playing arrangements Gil Evans wrote for the band), Marian McPartland, Gerry Mulligan, Benny Goodman, Mose Allison, Roger Kellaway, Al Jarreau, Carol Sloane, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Clark Terry, Anita O’Day and others. He ranks a 1958 concert he played with Duke Ellington’s orchestra as one of the greatest thrills of his life. Bill has published two books about his musical experiences, as well as countless columns, articles and tributes.

A fourth-generation musician, Bill Easley plays saxophone, flute and clarinet. Over the years he made his mark on the road and on recordings with the likes George Benson, Isaac Hayes, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Bobby Short, Grady Tate, Ron Carter, Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath, and in big bands fronted by John Lewis, David Baker, Wynton Marsalis and Jon Faddis. The versatile musician has also played about a dozen Broadway shows and released a generous handful of albums as a leader.

A resident of Chicago and Detroit before moving to the Big Apple, saxophonist Mark Hynes has played with David Berger, Rodney Whitaker, James Carter, Marcus Belgrave, Steven Bernstein, Britt Woodman, Jerome Richardson, Quincy Jones, Christian McBride, Craig Taborn, John Hendricks, Chaka Khan, The Duke’s Men and more. He’s also a respected educator, and leader of his own trios and quartets.

Pianist James Weidman’s credits include sharing the bandstand with players as diverse as Max Roach, Woody Herman, Archie Shepp, Joe Lovano, Jay Hoggard, Cassandra Wilson, Marty Ehrlich, Abbey Lincoln and Kevin Mahogany. James also has enjoyed a long-running musical partnership with saxophonist T.K. Blue, with whom he co-leads the band Taja. In addition to fronting a variety of ensembles—he’s released several albums as a leader—the pianist also appears regularly with The Duke’s Men and other bands.

Vocalist Ira Hawkins “is a wonderful singer, and this year we’re proud that he’s making his first appearance at Highlights In Jazz,” notes producer Jack Kleinsinger, who praises Ira’s deft touch and deep experience with the Ellington repertoire. The singer has often appeared with Mike Longo’s Big Band, and has developed a reputation as a versatile crowd pleaser who is equally at home with the blues, standards and ballads, able to add a personal twist to even the most familiar tune.

Kleinsinger always surprises audiences with unannounced special guests. In fact, the producer claims that at least a quarter of the special guests are a surprise even to him. “Players show up in the audience and we put them on,” Jack explains. “If I see them in the audience, they’re there at their own peril—I’ll get them onstage.” One case in point is “Everlasting Ellington” headliner Bernard Purdie: “He was in the audience one night when Roy Haynes was on stage. I went out and got Bernard and got him to sit in,” Jack recalls.

Dizzy Gillespie, Eubie Blake, Stan Getz, Carmen McRae and Maxine Sullivan are among the audience members recruited to sit in during the series’ early years. Throughout the 48 seasons of Highlights In Jazz, “We’ve been very lucky with guests. When someone was in town, they’d call me and make last-minute arrangements to show up. Musicians love the series and the jam is part of the tradition, which you don’t get at most other performances. It’s very exciting for the audience when a big name comes on stage unexpectedly.”

In addition to the annual tribute concert honoring a past master, each season the venerable Highlights In Jazz series includes a concert saluting to a living legend of jazz, as well as an all-star jam session bringing together respected jazz journeymen and the best of the up-and-coming young players. The 2020 season is no exception.

This year’s tribute takes place May 7, 2020, when Highlights In Jazz presents “A Salute to Roger Kellaway,” honoring the versatile pianist, composer and arranger. “Every year we honor a living jazz great—I want to salute them and show them how much we love their music while they’re still with us,” producer Jack Kleinsinger declares. Roger, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Nov. 1, 2019, is a remarkably versatile musician, having landed a Grammy, earned an Academy Award nomination, and penned the closing theme of the ground-breaking TV show All in the Family. previous honoree, guitarist Russell Malone, along with bassist Jay Leonhart, clarinetist/saxophonist Eddie Daniels and guitarist Roni Ben-Hur will gather at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center to pay tribute to the lauded pianist Roger Kellaway.

“The Return of the Jam Session” wraps up the 48th season on June 4, 2020. “This is a throwback to the old-school, all-star lineup on the bandstand, and combinations of people who have never played together before. It’s not what you’d get elsewhere,” Jack Kleinsinger says. Pianist Ted Rosenthal, saxophonists Peter and Will Anderson, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, drummer Victor Lewis, guitarist Frank Vignola and trumpeter Brian Lynch form the core ensemble, and a special guest will also be on hand to join in the fun.

Kleinsinger is proud that his Highlights In Jazz concerts have always attracted an audience of avid listeners. Each season he aims to present multiple facets of jazz: “We’ve done mainstream, Dixieland, swing, bebop; not avant-garde, not far-out, nothing that will scare anybody,” the producer explains. And with the series’ half-century mark just a couple of years away he continues to produce well-received events spotlighting the finest players from across multiple generations. “There are amazingly wonderful players out there and we want to feature them!”

GARY LUCAS UPCOMING SHOWS / HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019

shem.gif
Gary Lucas Live at the Monk Club Rome Italy with The Niro 12/27/19
photo copyright Mario Rimati

2019 was a very busy year for GARY LUCAS.

His new album with Italian singer The Niro, “The Complete Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas” (Esordisco), was just voted Best Album of 2019 in Classic Rock Magazine Italia.

Review from the Downtown Music Gallery Newsletter NYC 1/17/19:

THE NIRO Featuring GARY LUCAS / DAVIDE COMBUSTI / FRANCESCO ARPINO / et al – The Complete Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas Songbook (Esordisco 1902; Italy) The Niro features Gary Lucas on lead guitars, Davide Combusti on vocals, Francesco Arpino on keyboards, Phil Spalding on bass and Puccio Panettieri on drums. When Jeff Buckley came to NYC in early 1990’s, he was a relative unknown. He soon played at a historic memorial/tribute concert to his long-estranged father, Tim Buckley and wowed the audience due to amazing singing. Former Capt. Beefheart guitar great, Gary Lucas, began collaborating with Jeff Buckley, writing a dozen songs over a ten month period. Each song turned out to be something special. Young Mr. Buckley soon became the lead singer & rhythm guitarist in Mr. Lucas’s band Gods and Monsters, who got signed to Columbia Records. I caught that version of Gods and Monsters playing at St. Ann’s in March of 1992 and they were extraordinary! Sadly, Mr. Buckley soon left the band to pursue a solo career, taking two of the songs for his first solo effort with “Grace” becoming the title song. In 1997, Mr. Buckley began work on his second solo effort, relocating to Memphis to record. In May of that year, Mr. Buckley decided to go swimming in the Mississippi River and soon drowned, ending his life at just 30. In 2002, an album called ’Songs to No One’ was released and included the songs that Buckley and Lucas had recorded as demos. And now, nearly three decades after they were written, Gary Lucas teams up with an Italian rock band known as The Niro to perform all 12 songs that he and Mr. Buckley had written together. This includes five songs which have never appeared on a legit release before now.
Although I recognize the names of 100’s of Italian musicians from jazz and progressive bands, old & new, I hadn’t heard of most of the musicians here. It turns out that their bassist, Phil Spalding, did play with GTR (w/ Steve Howe & Steve Hackett). This disc begins with the five unreleased songs, all of which are superb. The opening song is “No One Must Find You Here” and it begins with Mr. Lucas distinctive swirling guitars. The lead singer here, Davide Combusti, has a strong voice which is similar to Mr. Buckley’s yet it is still his own. And similar to Mr. Buckley’s voice, he sounds like he was influenced by Robert Plant when he sang for Led Zep. It is also you will either really love or not, I am indeed impressed. Both the songs and performances are inspired throughout. The first song ends with an impressive solo guitar section, which is a perfect conclusion to a great opening song. What makes this disc so special is the endlessly inventive guitar playing of Mr. Lucas, inserting nifty flourishes of electric & acoustic guitars with the sly sonic seasoning of the assorted effects that Lucas has long mastered. The feeling that I get when listening to this disc is that is sounds like the long lost album that Mr. Buckley and Mr. Lucas started in 1992 and never really finished. Jeff Buckley was a major player in his own right with many fans around the world. His career was cut short by his early death with just a handful of releases under his belt. Hopefully this great disc will be heard by some of his passionate fans since it is well worth hearing. Quite a marvelous effort from Gary Lucas and The Niro! – Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
CD $15

Gary closed 2019 with 5 weeks on the road touring in Italy with The Niro and Francesco Arpino, and concerts and Masterclasses in France, Belgium, and Holland.

“An expressive instrumentalist, Cherry has a hip, melodic approach that is a refreshing contrast to guitarists who frequently resort to playing ‘finger music’, the execution of rapid streams of notes that serve no musical purpose other than to fill space.”

or various reasons, some obvious and some less so, Valentine’s week has become the best time of the year to hear all the major singers – for instance, this year, both Freddy Cole and Dianne Reeves at Jazz at Lincoln Center. This weekend there are four vocalists worth hearing at Birdland – and with a little bit of timing, you can arrange to see two in one evening.

The headliner at Birdland this week is Catherine Russell, heiress to jazz royalty, and tops any list of the the best blues-and-jazz singers working today. In an age of big voiced blasters and screeching pseudo soul divas, Ms. Russell is the real thing, a blues chanteuse of extraordinary taste and subtlety. No doubt in honor of the holiday, and her latest album, the Grammy-nominated Alone Together, she focuses her attention on the romantic side of the blues. (Tuesday through Saturday)
At 34, pianist / vocalist Champian Fulton knows at least a thousand songs, and seems to have recorded them all, in a very prolific series of 11 albums in that many years. She’s a prodigious swinger and a gifted entertainer, and knows from zillions of hours of experience in playing before live audiences (even at her still-tender years) how to delight a crowd. Back in the day, she had a regular gig in New York, but now she’s on the road a lot, which means we New Yorkers don’t get to see her as often as we’d like. (Wednesday & Thursday)

Carole J. Bufford is a fearless singer who takes everything from 1920s blues to 1960s power pop and, along the way, a heaping helping of Broadway eleven o’clock numbers, in her stride. With a big voice and an even bigger personality, whatever she chooses to lay on us is bound to inspire both thrills and chills and make February feel like July. (Friday & Saturday)

There’s no one better that Karen Oberlin at putting together a cabaret show – honoring an performer (starting with her bright and shiny Doris Day tribute), a songwriter (everyone from Frank Loesser to Elvis Costello), or even an idea (I have a particularly warm memory of her show about nature and the great outdoors). She’s such a strong fixture in the New York cabaret scene that she can take an unexpected songwriter, like Mr. Costello and now Randy Newman, and show us all how their music undisputedly belongs in the cabaret canon. Fans of the beloved songwriter, whose music covers all the bases from dystopia to Disney, will be delighted to discover that they have a friend in her. (Sunday)

THE MUSIC OF HERBIE NICHOLS:
a night dedicated to the beautiful and exotic tunes of the great 50’s pianist and composer.

.

BERNARD PURDIE the world’s most recorded drummer, was born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the eleventh of fifteen children. Purdiemoved to New York in 1960 and soon after recorded his first hit, with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970, which marked the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has worked with a vast array of artists, such as Paul Butterfield, Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums.

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.” Cadence Magazine

with

DAVID HANEY
Haney studied composition for six years with Czech composer, Tomas Svoboda and presented works with the Society of Oregon Composers, Haney has worked with such featured artists as Andrew Cyrille, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Bud Shank, Bernard Purdie, Buell Neidlinger, Julian Priester, Han Bennink, Obo Addy, Wilbert de Joode, Gerry Hemingway, Wolter Weirbos, Perry Robinson, and Johannes Bauer. Haney has recorded 14 albums for C.I.M.P. Records and Cadence Jazz Records . David has also collaborated on 14 albums on other labels worldwide. He has received grants and commissions for his creative work from the U.S. State Department; Alberta Film Works; and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Haney was awarded a travel grant from the U.S. State Department to present the music of composer Herbie Nichols in concerts throughout Argentina and Chile. Haney’s piano/trombone work Ota Benga of the Batwa was included in the critics pick for best Jazz Album of 2007 (Coda Magazine). “Conspiracy a go go” and “Clandestine” were both selected Top Ten Jazz Albums of 2009 (Cadence Magazine). David’s current release “Solo” received top ten honors in 2014 (Cadence Magazine). The Penguin Guide to Jazz has a half page entry on several David Haney albums.

Jazz at Kitano’s presents trombone great Steve Swell with the drumming great Bernard Purdie, pianist David Haney, and bassist Adam Lane. Check out this fantastic quartet playing the music of 50’s hard bop master Herbie Nichols.

Herbert Horatio Nichols (3 January 1919 – 12 April 1963) was an American jazz pianist and composer who wrote the jazz standard “Lady Sings the Blues“.

Obscure during his lifetime, he is now highly regarded by many musicians and critics

In 1955 Herbie recorded a large selection of pieces with Max Roach others for Blue Note Records. In later years passed on 27 of his unpublished manuscripts to friend and trombonist Roswell Rudd. Herbie died at age 44 of leukemia, in the early 1960s. Roswell went on record the pieces and publish them..

Tonight’s show features several of the pieces from Roswell’s collection. Pianist David Haney learned these tunes from Rudd while on tour together in Canada in 1998. Haney has since performed Nichols music worldwide, receiving a travel grant from the US government to present the music of Herbie Nichols in Argentina and Chile in 2002.
Steve Swell, Born in Newark, NJ, Steve Swell has been an active member of the NYC music community since 1975.  His breadth of versatility has allowed him to tour and record with such mainstream artists as Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich in the past, as well as more contemporary artists like Anthony Braxton, Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor and William Parker.  He has over 50 CDs as a leader or co-leader and is a featured artists on more than 125 other releases.  He runs workshops around the world and is a teaching artist in the NYC public school system focusing on special needs children.

Steve was nominated for Trombonist of the Year 2008 & 2011 by the Jazz Journalists Association, was selected Trombonist of the Year 2008-2010 , 2012 and 2014-2019 by the magazine El Intruso of Argentina and received the 2008 Jubilation Foundation Fellowship Award  of the Tides Foundation.  Steve has also  been selected by the Downbeat Critics Poll in the Trombone category  each year from 2010-2018.

ADAM LANE

By combining a disparate set of influences into a unique improvisational voice, Adam Lane has become recognized as one of the most original creative voices in contemporary jazz. His 2006 recording New Magical Kingdom, was recently featured in the Penguin Jazz Guide 1001 Best Records Ever Made, and his most recent recording, Ashcan Ranting received a myriad of critical praise including four stars in Downbeat.

“Lane’s music is genuine, accessible, fun. The music is deeply in touch with the essential pleasures of earwig-worthy tunes, fat bluesy grooves, and sheer tonal beauty.” (Downbeat Jan 2011)

Jerry Herman, who passed away just after Christmas at the aged of 88, had a career that was less unusual that it might seem from a distance: his first three full-on Broadway musicals were all hits, Milk and Honey (1961), Hello Dolly! (1964), and Mame (1966) were all hits, the latter two blockbusters. Then, his career suddenly modulated into a distinctly minor key, when he next wrote three shows in a row that all closed quickly and but are all regarded as favorites of musical theater cognescenti, Dear World (1969), Mack  & Mabel (1974) and The Grand Tour (1979), before he returned in style with one final epic triumph, La Cage aux Folles (1985).

Mack & Mabel in particular is beloved of musical theater geeks, even though it was not a success when it premiered on Broadway in 1974.  (It’s said that producer David Merrick dropped the ball when promoting the show, but also, it just could be that audiences were not in the mood for a very old fashioned show with traditionally-show-tune-y songs about silent movie stars in 1974, the age when everything from Sondheim to Andrew Lloyd Webber to the increasing number of rock-pop-oriented shows seemed very trendy.) Yet Mack & Mabel is easily one of Herman’s masterpieces, with some of his most moving songs, including two masterpiece ballads, “I Won’t Send Roses” (the rare love song written from the point of a self-confessed, insensitive male) and “Time Heals Everything” are two of his greatest ballads.  The Encores production is, for me at least (and I’ll never walk alone), one of the most anticipated events of the season, just to see the remarkable Douglas Sills, who looks and sings and acts as if he just stepped out of a vintage 1930 issue of Vanity Fair,  in the leading male role as cinema pioneer Mack Sennett.

Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights in Jazz presents
“47th Anniversary Gala”

If you do the math, you’ll realize that the 48th season actually opens with the 47th anniversary gala. Over the last five decades, producer Jack Kleinsinger’s venerable series has proliferated and prospered through at least half a dozen venues, starting with the old Theater de Lys and then New York University. (That’s where I first caught it – thank you Uncle Jack for giving me my only opportunity to see Woody Herman and Zoot Sims, along with dozens of other jazz legends and luminaries.) This particular gala promises a highly copasetic mix of “mainstream” and swing players (the brilliant violinist Aaron Weinstein), Afro Latin (percussionists Bobby Sanabria and Memo Acevedo), modernists (alto saxophonist Steve Wilson and pianist Tomoko Ohno) along with Mr. Kleinsingers – and everybody else’s – favorite bassist / vocalist / songwriter, Jay Leonhart. Expect that these extraordinarily players in all of these various styles of contemporary jazz will mix it up like crazy.

Victor Jones Quartet
Feat. Valtinho Anastacio, World Percussionist & Vocalist

SUN • FEB 16
4 & 6 PM

What do jazz legends Stan Getz, Woody Shaw, James Moody, Wynton Marsalis and Michael Petrucciani have in common? Victor Jones has been their drummer, as he has for countless top musicians. Featured on over 200 recordings and film soundtracks, the innovative Victor is not afraid to bring together different styles and sounds. In recent years, he’s led his own group and, as Time Out wrote, “Nothing Jones does is ever boring.”

Next Weekend: Feb 21 – Feb 23

T.S. Monk Sextet

FRI & SAT • FEB 21 & 22
7 & 9:30 PM

You can’t name a jazz drummer with better roots: T.S. Monk’s father was the legendary Thelonious, Art Blakey gave T.S. his first drum set, Max Roach gave him lessons and he began his career as his father’s drummer. His 1997 record “Monk on Monk,” interpreting Thelonious’s unmatched compositions won major awards and his live dates playing them and his own works are always dazzling events.

Kerry Politzer Brazilian Jazz Quartet Tribute to Durval Ferreira

SUN • FEB 23
4 & 6 PM

Bossa Nova would be unthinkable without the contributions of composer/guitarist Durval Ferreira whose beloved melodies were made famous by Sarah Vaughan, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Cannonball Adderley and others. Pianist-composer Kerry Politzer’s Quartet pays tribute to Ferreira in this show as she does on her new album Diagonal that All About Jazz says “perfectly captures the seductive spirit of classic Bossa Nova and the bebop-grounded vibe of honest Samba Jazz.”

Following Weekend: Feb 28 – Mar 1

Tony Glausi Quintet – 2017 ITG International Trumpet Competition Winner!

FRI & SAT • FEB 28 & MAR 1
7 & 9:30 PM

The winner of numerous international awards for his trumpet playing (including 2017 ITG International Trumpet Competition Winner), 25 year old Tony Glausi has already recorded six impressive albums and he brings his quintet to Tarrytown for an evening of new original music from his upcoming album. This recording is different as, for the first time, Tony sings a songbook, a collection of stories told melody by melody. He’ll be accompanied by Julian Lee on the tenor saxophone, Ryan Slatko on piano, Dan Chmielinski on bass, and Bryan Carter on drums.

Carlos Barbosa-Lima & Larry Del Casale Celebrating Delicado CD

SUN • MAR 1
4 & 6 PM

Carlos Barbosa-Lima has long been a masterful interpreter of a wide range of melodic music. A brilliant acoustic guitarist, Barbosa-Lima gives taste and feeling to works that range from Gershwin to Bach, Jobim to Debussy. A native of Brazil, Barbosa-Lima began studying the guitar when he was seven. Among his teachers were the influential Brazilian guitarist Isaias Savio and Andrés Segovia. While still a child, he was performing in public and he made his recording debut when he was just 12. He first toured the United States in 1967, and during 1971-1972 Barbosa-Lima performed in London and New York, gaining a worldwide reputation. Barbosa-Lima’s tasteful yet virtuosic control of the guitar has resulted in consistently delightful solo recitals for Concord Concerto that appeal to a wide audience. See Carlos Barbosa-Lima with Larry Del Casale and Nanny Assis at the Jazz Forum!

The 48th season of the popular Highlights In Jazz series gets off to a roaring start on Feb. 13, 2020, when producer Jack Kleinsinger presents the Highlights In Jazz 47th Anniversary Gala. Featured performers include bassist Jay Leonhart, pianist Tomoko Ohno, drummer Bobby Sanabria, saxophonist Steve Wilson, percussionist/drummer Memo Acevedo, violinist/mandolinist Aaron Weinstein, and drummer Vito Lesczak. And, in keeping with the beloved HIJ tradition, a surprise special guest will be on hand for the concert, held at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center.

Heading up the gala’s lineup is bassist Jay Leonhart, who has been dubbed “the Fred Astaire of jazz” by the L.A. Times’ Don Heckman. The noted critic described Jay as “a craftsman so seamlessly smooth that casual observers often fail to grasp the immensity of his talent.” A Highlights In Jazz mainstay, Jay has kept good musical company throughout his career, having performed with Duke Ellington, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jim Hall, Buddy Rich and Roy Eldridge, among other jazz greats. The bassist is also lauded for his singing, composing, and witty lyrics. Though one of Jay’s best-known tunes is called “It’s Impossible to Sing and Play the Bass,” he does both with great skill, much to the delight of his audiences.

According to Jack Kleinsinger, Jay Leonhart has probably performed at more Highlights In Jazz concerts than any other musician. “Jay is so flexible: He plays bass, he’s a singer, a song writer, he’s even written as tune about me,” the producer points out with a laugh. Jay is doing two Highlights In Jazz events this year. In addition to the gala, he will appear May 7, in a concert saluting pianist Roger Kellaway.

Pianist Tomoko Ohno is a Highlights In Jazz first-timer. She’s a long-time collaborator with bassist Jay Leonhart, and the twosome have released a duo album. Tomoko began her piano studies at about the age when most kids are just starting to learn the alphabet. She earned a degree in law and politics in her native Japan, before moving to the U.S. to continue her music studies with jazz icons such as Harold Mabern and Rufus Reid. Since then, the pianist has gone on to play with Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis, the Diva Jazz Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, and her own ensembles, appearing at some of the world’s most renowned music venues. Tomoko has also released several well-received recordings as a leader.

Calling Bobby Sanabria a drummer is only telling part of the story of this musical powerhouse. The Bronx-born winner of countless awards and an eight-time Grammy nominee, Bobby is also a percussionist, composer, arranger, band leader, conductor, documentary film producer, educator, activist, philanthropist, radio host and more. He’s played and recorded with a litany of jazz, Latin jazz and salsa luminaries such as Max Roach, Mario Bauzá, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Dizzy Gillespie, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Cándido, Larry Harlow, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, Henry Threadgill, Charles McPherson, Randy Brecker, Joe Chambers, Jon Lucien and the Mills Brothers, to name just a few.

Alto and soprano saxophonist Steve Wilson is among the most in-demand players on the jazz scene today, with a breath-taking variety of credits. In addition to fronting his own band, just a glance at Steve’s recent calendar reveals gigs with Maria Schneider, Buster Williams, Christian McBride, Rufus Reid and Jay Leonhart, plus studio time with Geoff Keezer. Steve has released eight albums as a leader and appeared on more than 100 more recordings, with the likes of Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson, Joe Henderson, Charlie Byrd, Billy Childs, Karrin Allyson, Don Byron, James Williams and Mulgrew Miller.

Percussionist/drummer Memo Acevedo excels at both jazz and Latin music. He honed his craft around the globe, immersing himself in the music at its source while living in Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Canada, California and New York. Memo has performed and recorded with musical masters including Tito Puente, Moacir Santos, Ivan Lins, Mark Murphy, Jackie & Roy, Dave Valentín, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Angelique Kidjo, Hilton Ruiz, Louie Bellson and the Cuban band Irakere, as well as with his own ensembles. Renowned as an educator as well as a performer, Memo has written books on Brazilian and Afro-Caribbean drumming, and won numerous awards.

It’s easy to discover Aaron Weinstein’s great sense of humor—just check out the recent Jazz Times feature on the self-described “bow-tie rights activist.” But according to jazz luminary Bucky Pizzarelli, the violinist/mandolinist is “a perfect musician.” The legendary guitarist is not the only one who has found a lot to like about Aaron Weinstein. This young string maven has garnered positive notices from Tony Bennett and Regina Carter, and performed with the likes of Les Paul, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Dave Frishberg, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. Aaron Weinstein has released several albums as a leader, and recorded with musicians as diverse as Skitch Henderson, Jessica Molaskey, Jim Caruso, Christine Ebersole, Jay Geils and others.

Drummer Vito Lesczak moved to the Big Apple in 1992, and since then has become an indispensable part of the jazz scene. He has appeared on dozens of albums, working with recognized giants of the genre such as Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Mark Murphy, Jay Clayton, Don Braden, Bucky Pizzarelli, Gene Bertoncini, Bob Cranshaw, Eric Alexander, Larry Goldings, Andy Bey and Bill Charlap. Vito also fronts his own ensembles and has performed in New York and around the globe at major festivals and renowned venues.

Kleinsinger always surprises audiences with unannounced special guests. In fact, the producer claims that at least a quarter of the special guests are a surprise even to him. “Players show up in the audience and we put them on,” Jack explains. “If I see them in the audience, they’re there at their own peril—I’ll get them onstage. People sitting in is part of our tradition. It’s exciting for the audience when a big name comes on unexpectedly.”

In addition to the annual opening gala, each season the Highlights In Jazz series includes a concert focusing on the music of one of the departed geniuses of the genre, a salute to a living legend and an all-star jam session bringing together respected jazz journeymen and the best of the up-and-coming young players. The 2020 season is no exception.

Art Baron & The Duke’s Men will be onstage on March 19, 2020, as Highlights In Jazz celebrates the music of the great Duke Ellington. The theme, “Ellington Everlasting,” turns the spotlight on the maestro’s timeless compositions and enduring legacy. Trombonist Art Baron, drummer Bernard Purdie, bassist Bill Crow, saxophonists Bill Easley and Mark Hynes, pianist James Weidman and vocalist Ira Hawkins will be on hand, along with a special guest.

May 7, 2020, will bring “A Salute to Roger Kellaway.” Last year’s honoree, guitarist Russell Malone, along with bassist Jay Leonhart, clarinetist/saxophonist Eddie Daniels and guitarist Roni Ben-Hur will gather at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center to pay tribute to pianist Roger Kellaway. Roger, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Nov. 1, 2019, is a remarkably versatile musician, having won a Grammy, received an Academy Award nomination, and penned the closing theme of the ground-breaking TV show All in the Family. “Every year we honor a living jazz great—I want to salute them and show them how much we love their music while they’re still with us,” producer Jack Kleinsinger declares.

Soprano saxophonist/composer and NASA artist Jane Ira Bloom brings her trio for the first time to ShapeShifter Lab performing with long-time bandmates bassist Mark Helias and drummer Matt Wilson. A pioneer in the use of live electronics and movement in jazz, Bloom’s been leading bands into new creative territory for over 40 years. She is a multi-time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll and Jazz Journalists Award for Soprano Saxophone and recipient of the Guggenheim fellowship. The trio has always held a special fascination for musicians because “playing in threes” holds out the possibility that something can always be slightly off balance and that’s just what fires the imagination of players like these. Helias and Wilson, mature composer/ bandleaders in their own right, add depth and innovation to every spontaneous choice they make. Don’t miss these “fearless jazz explorers who share a commitment to beauty & adventure.

Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 30 CD’s as a leader to date),  or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”

Hot House magazine awarded him Best Guitarist Fans Decision for 2017.  He was recently voted once again as one of the top Jazz Guitarists in the 2019 Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls for the 10th time.

Warren Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore,MD. From the young age of three years old, Warren has been trained on the Vibraphone/Marimba, Drums, and Piano. Under the guidance of his father Warren Wolf Sr., Warren has a deep background in all genres of music.

Vibraphonist Warren Wolf is one of the hardest swinging virtuosos in all of modern music.
