20th ANNUAL
CENTRAL BROOKLYN JAZZ FESTIVAL
shem.gif
Brooklyn, New York, April 8, 2019–April 11 through May 12, Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium presents New York City’s longest continuously running grassroots festival dedicated to jazz. More than 500 artists are performing in over 50 events at intimate venues throughout Brooklyn during this month-long celebration of the music. All performances and programs are financially accessible and open to all.

Visit www.cbjcjazz.org or call 718.773.2252 ext. 103 for information.

The backbone of festival 2019 is the faith-based institutions, cultural and music venues hostig performances by Ahmed Abdullah, Stanley Banks, Marion Cowings, Winard Harper, Craig Harris, Frank Lacy, Dr. Mambo, Carol Sudhalter, and other notables throughout Brooklyn.

Brooklyn’s jazz legacy dates back over a half-century—Freddie Hubbard’s fiery session with Lee Morgan at Club La Marchal, Horace Silver’s gigs at the Club Continental, and boss bass man, Reggie Workman, at the East attracted intrepid audiences into clubs located in central Brooklyn. “The renaissance of the jazz scene in Brooklyn is due, partly, to the efforts of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium. We reclaimed our “jazz destination” status, based on the proliferation of venues with music policies throughout central Brooklyn,” states, CBJC’s chairperson, Clarence Mosley, Jr.

The annual Highlights In Jazz series, a fan fave for almost a half century, can be counted on to deliver concerts that surprise and delight savvy jazz fans. The third event of the 2019 lineup showcases one of the series’ most beloved traditions: paying homage to a living jazz great. The Highlights In Jazz presentation Salute to Randy Brecker celebrates the music and contributions of this beloved trumpeter and contemporary jazz icon. “Let’s honor them while they can smell the roses,” declares producer Jack Kleinsinger.

A multi-generational lineup mixing established jazz masters with the best of today’s musical up-and-comers will fete Brecker at the May 16th concert. Pianist George Cables, bassist Buster Williams, drummer/vibraphonist Chuck Redd, vocalist Veronica Swift, and saxophonists Peter Anderson and Will Anderson are scheduled to appear, along with guest of honor Randy Brecker. And, as has been the tradition since the very first Highlights in Jazz event, listeners will be treated to a surprise appearance by a renowned special guest.

Randy Brecker has been an important presence on the music scene going back to the 1960s. “Versatile” doesn’t begin to describe this Philadelphia-born master of trumpet and flugelhorn. Just consider the fact that in 1967 he worked with both Blood, Sweat and Tears and Horace Silver. And that was just the beginning for this groundbreaker and shape shifter. Brecker has been an important force in straight-ahead jazz, a fusion pioneer as co-founder of Dreams and the multi-Grammy nominated Brecker Brothers Band (with his brother, tenor maven Michael Brecker), and an in-demand contributor appearing on albums by artists as beloved – and as varied – as James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Parliament/Funkadelic, Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, Jaco Pastorius and Frank Zappa. Just to drop a few more names, Randy played with Art Blakey, George Benson, Freddie Hubbard, Oliver Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, James Brown, Eddie Palmieri, plus big bands led by Clark Terry, Duke Pearson, and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis.

Randy has earned numerous Grammys and a perennial slot on countless “best of” lists. The veteran musician sounds better than ever, as evidenced by Rocks, his recent release with the NDR Big Band–The Hamburg Radio Jazz Orchestra.

Something magical happens whenever outstanding jazz players of ages spanning a half century take to the stage and create common ground. That’s what you’ll experience at Highlights In Jazz’s upcoming Salute to Randy Brecker, when these masters of the genre strut their musical stuff.

Art Pepper dubbed pianist George Cables “Mr. Beautiful,” and after hearing him play just a few notes you’ll agree that he deserves the title. In addition to Pepper, Cables has shared stage, studio and bandstand with legends such as Woody Shaw, Dexter Gordon, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Rollins, Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard, Chico Freeman and Billy Harper, to name just a few. Besides being an in-demand sideman, George has released dozens of well-reviewed recordings as a leader—his stellar recent output includes the lauded My Muse, Icons and Influences, and The George Cables Songbook. Cables is a favorite of author Michael Connelly, who has mentioned the pianist frequently in his Harry Bosch series of detective novels. In fact, Cables appears on the soundtrack of the TV series, and has accompanied Connelly during the author’s public readings from his books.

Grammy-winning bassist Buster Williams has worked and recorded with a breath-taking spectrum of greats such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Mary Lou Williams, Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Chick Corea, Ron Carter, Carmen McRae, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis, and legions of others. In addition to a stellar jazz output that includes hundreds of recordings as a sideman and well over a dozen as a leader, Buster has appeared on numerous film scores, commercials and TV shows, from Sesame Street to The Tonight Show and Grammy broadcasts. He’s received numerous awards and grants, from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and others.

Drummer/vibraphonist Chuck Redd is a veteran musical road warrior, with more than two dozen European tours under his belt with the likes of Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, Terry Gibbs,Conte Candoli, and others. Chuck has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme, the Lionel Hampton Big Band, Tommy Flanagan, Ray Brown, and the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. The drummer/vibraphonist has released several albums under his own name, and appeared on scores of others with Nicki Parrott, Harry Allen, Houston Person, John di Martino, Ray Drummond, and others.

Is there anything vocalist Veronica Swift can’t do? Barely into her mid-20s, she’s already a seasoned song stylist with more than a decade of experience—at age 11 she made her Jazz at Lincoln Center debut, singing at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Not only does Swift know her way around swing, bop, and vocalese, she’s devoted to the Great American Songbook and tunes from the 1920s and ’30s. Chris Botti, Benny Green, Shelly Berg, Sheila Jordan, Emmet Cohen, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, and the Diva Orchestra are among the notables she’s appeared with recently.

Saxophonists/clarinetists Peter and Will Anderson: Hailed by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other august publications for their remarkable virtuosity, the identical Anderson twins began steeping themselves in classic jazz while still in elementary school. They absorbed the styles and sounds of Benny Goodman, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie, and cite Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker as early influences. Since moving to the Big Apple, they’ve played with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, the Village Vanguard Orchestra, and Wycliffe Gordon. In addition to releasing several albums as leaders, the Juilliard-trained twosome have appeared off-Broadway celebrating the music of Artie Shaw and the Dorsey Brothers.

As always, no Highlights In Jazz concert would be complete without the appearance of a surprise special guest! “It’s always a well-kept secret, and it’s always a lot of fun,” producer Jack Kleinsinger notes. Kleinsinger is a hands-on producer, which makes the Highlights In Jazz series unique. You’ll see Jack on stage, introducing the musicians and sharing his vast knowledge of jazz history. He also structures the shows, laying out a format, specifying types of tunes—perhaps a ballad, followed by something up-tempo—but leaving the specific song choices to the players. “That way, there’s not eight guys standing around on stage wondering, ‘What are we going to do now?’ Sometimes I’m surprised by what they choose, but I trust the musicians, they’re all veterans,” Jack notes. His active role inspires him to continue producing the series. “I wouldn’t want to just book acts for 40-some years. Producing like this is fun for me.”

You won’t want to miss a single event in this new season of Highlights In Jazz!

On Friday evening, April 5, Marilyn Maye plays the 7:00PM show at Feinstein’s and Anais Reno follows her at 9:30PM. One wonders if the club has made a point of deliberately booking the youngest outstanding singer of standards working today on the same night as, well, it seems politically incorrect to say the “oldest” (even though the artist herself doesn’t shrink from that term), but most experienced and venerated singer currently working the clubs. If you haven’t seen Marilyn Maye, you must have been hiding under a rock; her late-life rediscovery has been one of the major success stories of the music world and she is well worth all the praise. Simply put, there is no more exciting daredevil artist singing today, combining the chutzpah and high style of cabaret with the energy and musicality of jazz at its most thrilling. She has long since made the transition from “living legend” to “force of nature.”

You’re forgiven, however, for not knowing Anais Reno yet – after all, she is still only 15. Even so, she has already played most of the major rooms, and won competitions of both the Feinstein and Mabel Mercer Foundation. The term “old soul” is much bandied about and misused, it does not apply to, say, a young person who happens to like music or movies made before they were born – ie, not every kid with good taste, rare as that may be, is an “old soul.” I use the expression to describe a person with wisdom and skills beyond their years, and if it applies to anyone, it does to Ms. Reno. She has a beautiful deep sultry voice, as if she were 15-going-on-46, and interpretative skills even more so. While she may look like she stepped out of the ensemble from Annie, she sounds like someone you’d cast in Follies.

When Veronica Swift won the Thelonious Monk competition at age 21, she was already a finished product – not a work-in-progress. (Except to the extent that, hopefully, we are all works-in-progress.) Ms. Swift not only has one of the most beautiful voices of anyone singing today, but a remarkable musicianship that seems innate to her, as natural as breathing, and partly an inheritance from her parents, the late and perennially underappreciated bebop piano master Hod O’Brien and the outstanding singer-educator Stephanie Nakasian. Currently 24, she is already one of the major talents of our age and she has nowhere to go but up. Though her usual stomping grounds in New York are Birdland and Jazz at Lincoln Center, this Jazz Standard outing has been announced as a CD release event. Count me in.

Talkin’ Vinyl @ Original Vinyl Records Schedule

Tuesday, April 30th 4pm to 5pm
This Event Is In Conjunction with International Jazz Day 2019
Ellington at Newport 1956

Special Guest Arnold J. Smith will speak about this legendary performance that took place on July 7, 1956 at the Newport Jazz Festival and was released on record by Columbia Records.

Some writer said that 1956 was the year they stopped taking Duke Ellington for granted. The Ellington ’56 LP was on its way to becoming legendary. The Paul Gonzales 27 choruses solo was taking on a life of its own. As for the actual show NJF producer George Wein had told me that under no circumstances was Duke to play “the medley” and leave. Ellington told me that he was working on the Newport Suite, new to his repertoire, right up to showtime. Little did we know that it would be a 1930’s warhorse, Diminuendo and Crescendo In Blue would become the star of the Festival. In 1957 A teen-aged autograph hound –moi– went down to his fave haunt, Birdland, the original on Broadway near 52nd St. to have the band sign the album of the ’56 Fest.

Oscar Goodstein, Birdand’s manager, was a family friend, got me pass the door and up to a celebratory bandstand. The guys passed the album around. Did I mention that it was an invitation only welcome home night for Duke? The result of that fateful night is what you see.

Arnold Jay Smith, a former editor of DownBeat Magazine, publicist, blogster, professor at the New School for 26 years, now teaches at New Jersey City University since 2000.

Sunday, May 5th 4 to 5pm
Joe Conzo: Tito Puente, Machito, Ray Barretto

Warwick, NY author, historian and record producer Joe Conzo Sr. is an encyclopedia of Latin Jazz knowledge.

Joe Conzo, Sr. will play never before heard recordings from his private collection from Tito Puente, Machito and Ray Barretto.

Historian Joe Conzo, Sr., who is currently writing a book on the “Big Three” bandleaders Machito, Tito Puente, and Tito Rodríguez, owns an unrivaled collection of Machito live recordings. He is the producer of many recordings by Latin artists on prestigious labels such as Sony Music and Pablo. Conzo lectures for Jazz @ Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian and other organizations, and, since 2013, has taught a continuing education course on Latin music and Latin Jazz at Hostos with a focus on Puente, Rodríguez and Machito. A long-time Puente publicist and confidant, he penned the acclaimed book “Mambo Diablo: My Journey with Tito Puente” and produced more than 20 benefit concerts for the Tito Puente Scholarship Fund.  He also currently serves as the Director of the Tito Puente Legacy Project – an archive of Puente memorabilia based at the school.

Sunday, May 19th 4 to 5pm
Scott Wenzel from Mosaic Records The Bill Savory Collection

Scott Wenzel from Mosaic Records will  talk about one of the most amazing jazz archeological discoveries of the 21st century The Bill Savory Collection.

Never before heard recordings by The Count Basie Orchestra with Lester Young, Chick Webb, Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Albert Ammons, Benny Carter, Bobby Hackett, … the list goes on and on.

A trained musician and audio engineer, Savory served in the U.S. Navy where he developed radar technology and flew as a test pilot. But first and foremost, Savory was a music lover who single handedly captured hundreds of hours of top-shelf music off the air in the six years preceding America’s entry into World War II. By day, he recorded commercials off the air for a transcription service. But by night, Savory compiled a musical treasure chest, recording the jazz artists he loved off the radio.   The live nightclub and ballroom performances he captured were longer and more creatively daring as the artists were freed from the constraints of the conventional studio.

Packed away for decades and only rumored to exist, the Savory Collection was acquired by the National Jazz Museum in Harlem in 2010, the culmination of a 36-year quest by jazz historian Loren Schoenberg. The discovery made headlines around the world, including the front page of The New York Times

Wenzel was approached by Loren Schoenberg of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to help catalog and ship the recordings found in the Bill Savory Collection. The Museum and Mosaic Records were able to release a portion of these recordings after many years of negotiations with various estates of the musicians who were on these recordings. Once these recordings were decided upon for release, both Schoenberg and Wenzel arranged how the music would be released on CD.

Scott Wenzel (B. 1960) began collecting 78s while still in grammar school and continued his love of music throughout high school. He majored in Communications and Music while at Towson State University (Maryland) where he hosted a number of jazz programs over WCVT-FM. After graduation he was a DJ for WYRS-FM in Stamford, Ct. In 1987, Wenzel joined Mosaic Records and began producing boxed sets in 1999. In this role he is a three time Grammy Award nominee in the Best Historical Issue category and has won Jazz Journalist Association and Down Beat awards. He has also produced and written liner notes in addition to supplying 78s for Sony Legacy, Blue Note, Verve and Capitol. Wenzel lives in Rye, NY and also leads a 16 piece swing band and a jazz trio.

DELTA AIR LINES PRESENTS
BOSSABRASIL Starring
SINGER/COMPOSER/ GUITARIST
JOAO BOSCO “LEGEND OF BRAZIL”
@ BIRDLAND APRIL 16 – 20

Produced by Pat Philips-Stratta

shem.gif
JOAO BOSCO and his very talented band of Guto Wirtti on Bass, Kiko Freitas on Drums, and Ricardo Silveira  on Guitar, arrive from Rio and bring  the exciting rhythms of Samba and Bossa Nova to the  Birdland  stage with influences of Rock and Roll, Jazz, and other ethnic cultures such as, Arabic and African.  The basic ingredient of  his music is Samba, Brazil’s cultural own.  While singing in Portuguese, Bosco makes you feel that the sound of his words are as important as their meaning.

The New York Times said of BOSCO …”On acoustic guitar, he was masterly picking out the subtle syncopation of ‘Samba’ rhythms..a musician complete within himself..a ferocious performer with a kind of trans-state of precision and energy!”

He grew up in a musical family, his mother a concert Pianist and his brother a Composer.  Bosco concentrated on American Jazz, influenced by Miles Davis, Charlie Parker,  Duke Ellington and the great Brasilian musicians Dorival Caymmi and Antonio Carlos Jobim.  He worked with Vinicius de Morais and later Aldir Blanc who wrote his lyrics.  Joao Bosco  made many recordings, especially with the amazing vocalist Elis Regina, one of the greatest Brasilian vocalists of all time.

Bosco is revered for writing the protest song “O Bebaido e a Equilibrista” which became the theme song for Amnesty International.  He has made many recordings and has collaborated with greats  Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, and  Dorival Caymmi  among so many others such as American guitarist Lee Ritinour.     Bosco tours  the world and carries on  the legacy of this important music of his country with his extraordinary  talent.

JOAO BOSCO says, “Music is everything to me.  I am alive because I am singing and playing .” ..

After a two-month hiatus, guitarist-turned-composer/arranger Peter Leitch brings his 14-piece New Life Orchestra back to Club 75 at Bogardus Mansion in New York City’s TriBeCa neighborhood. Peter’s five nights of successful performances November-January were especially gratifying because they were the first time these arrangements and compositions had been performed by this hand-picked group in public.

As Peter Leitch’s fans already know, this orchestra is named “New Life” in homage to the artist’s near-miraculous recovery from stage 4 lung cancer. Emerging from his treatments unable to use his left arm but full of musical ideas, Peter turned to writing and orchestrating, and now feels freed from the tyranny of the guitar-of daily practice-able to realize his musical ideas in a larger context. Of course, the guitar is featured prominently in his writing-one of the unusual features of this very untraditional big band!

The Peter Leitch New Life Orchestra

Bill Mobley & Duane Eubanks, trumpets
Tim Harrison, flute
Dave Pietro, alto/soprano saxophone
Jed Levy, tenor saxophone, flute, alto flute
Carl Maraghi, baritone saxophone, bass clarinet
Matt Haviland, trombone
Brandon Moodie, bass trombone
Phil Robson, guitar
Peter Zak, piano

GARY LUCAS NEWS AND
UPCOMING APPEARANCES

world premiere of Gary Lucas’ new live score for “The Wedding March”  @ La Cinematheque Francaise Paris  3/1/19
photo by Nicolas Le Thierry D’ennequin
shem.gif

On March 1st GARY LUCAS  performed the world premiere of his new live solo guitar score for  Erich Von Stroheim’s 1928 silent classic  “The Wedding March” at France’s prestigious national film centerLa Cinematheque Francaise.

Lucas’ new score packed the Henri Langlois Theatre in the Cinematheque, and marked Gary’s second performance there with a live solo score.

“Commissioning a live score from Gary Lucas to accompany Erich von Stroheim‘s ‘The Wedding March’ was something of a bet, as it marked a move from his beloved fantastic cinema into melodrama territory. But it being Stroheim, the melodrama had to be weird. Gary’s guitar-playing is bold and precise—a perfect match for the director’s temperament, and his inspirations beautifully echo the mood of this sardonic film streaked with irreconcilable sentiments. Viennese but with an attitude!”

—Frédéric Bonnaud, Directeur général de la Cinémathèque Française

Lucas has a long history of accompanying films live with his original solo scores all over the world, which utilize composed themes and improvisation, and has developed over a dozen to date—many of which he is showcasing currently in an ongoing retrospective of his live scores at NYC’s premier arthouse cinema The Metrograph.

Live Music and Film projects: https://bit.ly/2ayknkK

On Sat. March 9th Gary filled Paris’ Sunset Jazz Club in Les Halles with a solo concert, which included a tribute to Lucas’ late friends and collaborators Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet).

The evening featured Gary performing with special guests vocalist Davide Combusti (The Niro) and keyboardist/producer Francesco Arpino,
who flew in specially from Rome to preview three songs from a new album they’ve recorded entitled  “The Complete Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas Songbook”.

Lucas had seen The Niro perform in Italy several years ago and, impressed by his vocal abilities, suggested a collaboration, which resulted in their new album.

Recorded in Rome for the Esordisco label, the album showcases a dozen songs Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas wrote together, and includes their anthems “Grace” and “Mojo Pin”, plus 5 Buckley/Lucas songs never before officially released.

It’s scheduled to come out later this year on Esordisco to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the release of Jeff Buckley’s classic “Grace” album.

Other guests for the evening included Gary’s Parisien friends Jean-Philippe Rykiel on keyboards, bassist Laurent David,  guitarists David Konopnicki and David Fenech, and singer Yass Body.

Read an appreciation of the concert by writer Julie Blore-Bizot:

What The Press Is Saying About “Nu Brasil”

Contemporary Fusion Reviews: by Dick Metcalf
“…as I listen to Sergio’s splendid guitar on the percussion-driven opener, “Down South“, the “thrill is back” – no doubt!…”
”Trem Do Tempo” (Time Train) will sway you gently on your way to Latin jazz oblivion… I can (easily) see this one winning awards this year….”,

The JWVIBEby Jonathan Widran
“…Poring over the guest list – which includes natives of Spain, Cuba, France and Brazil – and figuring out who interacts with who when is almost as frolicsome as listening to Pereira’s brisk, breezy melodic lines

LJN Latin Jazz Net: by Raul da Gama
“…Mr Pereira has also taken a leap into the great unknown, so to speak, with music that has complex orchestrations, thereby mixing the traditions of men like Laurindo Almeida and Baden Powell with those of Heitor Villa-Lobos…”

The Vinyl Anachronist:
“…His guitar is soft yet intricate, full of so many flavors that instantly transport you to the Southern hemisphere…”
”…Pereira’s compositions and arrangements lean toward the impressionistic, resulting in a sound that envelops you with warmth, vivaciousness and a miraculous gift of seduction…”

An exciting double bill — members of Dave Valentin’s Quartet led by his former music director, pianist Bill O’Connell with flute virtuoso Andrea Brachfeld perform favorites from the late “Pied Piper of the Bronx.” After intermission, the group expands to a tentet with some of New York’s top Latin jazz artists, to premiere Bill’s newest compositions just prior to recording.

.…With all due respect, she (Brachfeld) plays her buns off; one of the first ladies to disprove the concept that only men can deal with the real deal…”
– Dave Valentín

O’Connell, who has written arrangements for bands led by Mongo Santmaria and Puerto Rican flutist Dave Valentin, composes with freedom and authority – Downbeat

For this 40th anniversary celebration of the String Trio of New York, guitarist/leader/composer James Emery has created some new pieces. Come listen to them on Friday, March 29, 2019 at 7:30pm at Morrison Hall Mansion where chamber jazz is ‘up close and personal.’ Raves JazzTimes, “No individual or ensemble has done more to demystify chamber jazz, and to realize its potential for warmth, sensuousness, and beauty … than the String Trio of New York.”

James Emery has been acclaimed by Glenn Astarita in All About Jazz as “one of the world’s finest guitarists as [he] possesses an encyclopedic jazz vocabulary as a technician and composer.” In addition, Emery has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the News York Foundation for the Arts, and the Cary Trust. As a composer, he writes pieces for chamber groups, jazz ensembles, solo guitar, chamber orchestra, and symphony orchestra. His commissioned compositions have been funded by Chamber Music America, and the Meet the Composer — Rockefeller/AT&T, Composers Commissions USA, and Lila Wallace Jazz Programs.

Violinist Rob Thomas, who is a Berklee College of Music (Boston) professor, is a highly regarded jazz multi-instrumentalist, fluent on violin, cello, and bass. He has held the violin chair of the String Trio of New York since 2001. JazzTimes calls him “a violinist of exceptional creative resources… riveting as a solo voice with a rich complex tone.”

Michael Formanek is a veteran bassist, composer, improviser, educator, and leader of various bands including quartet and 19-piece ensemble. The New Yorker has described him as “a bold and unclassifiable bassist and composer.” He has received commissions, awards, and grants from the Peabody Conservatory, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Doris Duke Foundation.

Morrison Hall Mansion is the centerpiece of the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. This magnificent marble building is located at 115 South Street.

Admission: $15 adults; $10 senior citizens, faculty, staff, alumni; free for all students. Doors and Box office open at 6:45 pm. Also, online purchase with a $ 2.50 service charge for each ticket is available. Nearby parking is available free in college lots. Manhattan mainstay singer- pianist DARYL SHERMAN returns to Birdland Theater on Tuesday, April 16 with Boots Maleson on bass and special guest, trombonist Art Baron, who played with Duke Ellington in his last orchestra. With a seasonal flight of fancy, this show “Spring Fever” will also include songs from Daryl’s highly praised new CD, “Lost In A Crowded Place”. There’ll be samplings of  Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Nat Cole, Ella and even some Sherman originals. In addition to familiar favorites, Daryl Sherman always has a surprise up her sleeve.

“A pianist, singer, and occasional songwriter and bandleader, Ms. Sherman is the living heir to the two great ladies of this highly rarefied tradition, the sophisticated and swinging Barbara Carroll and the delightfully kooky, musically majestic Blossom Dearie. Ms.Sherman draws on legacies and repertoires of both – and a great many others besides. Whether being silly or sophisticated, doing a song from Fats Waller or Noel Coward, she’s never less than thoroughly convincing.”
Will Friedwald, THE CITIVIEW NEW YORK

“No veteran singer inhabits the full range of American Popular Song repertoire quite like the irreplaceable Sherman. A gently swinging pianist as well, precious few possess her abundant versatility, style and charm.” – Steve Futterman, The New Yorker

THE CRITICS on ” Lost In A Crowded Place” (www.jazzology.com)
“Ms. Sherman is very much in prime form throughout. She performs superior mostly little-played standards, forgotten gems such as Barbara Carroll’s title song and Louis Armstrong’s “If We Never Meet Again”. Her tender yet quietly expressive voice sometimes hints at Mildred Bailey or Lee Wiley but sounds very much like herself while her piano playing is fluent and creative swing. This highly recommended set is *****!”
Scott Yanow, LA JAZZ SCENE
“I would have singers study her phrasing on this disc – that wonderful science of balancing song and conversation. How she does it from song to song, from chorus to chorus – making each song its own complete emotional and intellectual statement like an aural short story – is something quite remarkable. Also, fine incisive notes by Carol Sloane”
Michael Steinman, JAZZ LIVES

“Sherman’s original ‘Land Of Just We Two’ has a gracious melody of Bernsteinian character, furnished with carefully considered lyric poetry. She has the rare gift of being able to create a song that is mature, durable and enjoyable. How pleasing to hear a Daryl Sherman original featured as the opener of this attractive new release.”
John Robert Brown, Jazz Journal (UK)

Sergio Pereira Brazilian Jazz! Celebrating Zoho CD

SUN • MAR 31
4 PM & 6 PM

Sergio Pereira is visiting the Jazz Forum on his upcoming “Nu Brasil” CD release tour!

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sergio Pereira started playing acoustic guitar (violao) at the age of 8 years old, influenced by his older brother who played the guitar and helped him with his first chords. He was also influenced by the music of bossa-nova giants at the time such as Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Carlos Lyra, Joao Donato, Marcos Valle and many more. Growing up in Rio in the 60’s and 70’s has contributed tremendously to the energy, groove and rhythms reflected in his music today.

His latest album ”’Nu Brasil,” released by ZOHO Music of NYC, includes some of the most well known musicians in the world, such as pianist Helio Alves, flutist Oriente Lopez, harmonica player Gabriel Grossi, Spanish saxophonist Perico Sambeat, singer Paula Santoro, guitarist Marcus Texeira and others.

Heralded as one of the most important saxophonists of our time, Chico Freeman marked his return to the United States after more than a decade living and working in Europe with a new album and a new group in 2016. Freeman has a thirst to immerse himself in his music and a curiosity to explore, working with different musicians and living in different cultures. He has perfected an immediately recognizable approach to music and composition, blending what he has experienced from his past and providing fluidity into a future of infinite musical possibilities.

Chico has a new group made up of great musicians. See Zaccai Curtis: piano, Essiet Okon Essiet: bass, Jason Brown: drums for this special engagement!

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”
Billy Hart

“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira.  He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.”
THE NEW YORKER

“[Alves has] subtlety, musicianship and extraordinary improvisational facility…” “…outstanding capabilities as a melodic improviser…”
Robert L. Doerschuk, DownBeat Magazine

“Alves plays with a gravity and a stylistic flair that’s truly impressive.”
Phillip Van Vleck, Billboard Magazine

“Alves executes his feats with unhurried grace, even at very fast tempos. There is an aptitude that, if not exclusive of Brazil, has reached its highest expression there: the communication of a subtle energy embodying a life- affirming message that life is transitory.”
Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times Magazine

“Adnet’s voice is an emotionally powerful instrument capable of firmness or fragility, depending on the situation. When the tempo slows down and the lights are low, she reveals an attractive vocal wave—more a quiver than out-and-out vibrato—that heightens the intensity in her delivery; this level of directness and honesty transcends mere language when it appears.”
Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“Maucha and I have travelled the world with the Banda Nova since 1984. She is a marvelous singer. Her voice is deep, rich, mysterious. It makes me long for the Brazilian forest. Maucha is intelligent and comes from a very musical family. She is a good girl, wonderful woman, a great artist”
Kiss from your fan,
Antonio Carlos Jobim
