“New York Stories”

Judy Niemack in New York City!

“You sing like an angel, or at least like an angel who’s heard Basie and Miles…”

Neil Tesser, Downbeat

Judy’s new CD with Jim McNeely and the Danish Radio Big Band was just released August 17, on Sunnyside records!

New York City is the center of many worlds, the jazz world being one of them. Musicians have always felt the pull of the Big Apple. The depth of talent, competition, and energy have made the City the epicenter of growth in the music. Vocalist Judy Niemack’s improvisation teacher Warne Marsh told her that she had to go and, once she did, she never looked back.

Niemack’s experiences, and friendships created, in New York have shaped her career and life. One of the most important friendships turned out to be that of the great pianist, composer and arranger Jim McNeely. Niemack’s new recording with McNeely, New York Stories, shows the depth of their musical and personal affinity as they present pieces they arranged together over the years, and, finally, have recorded together, along with the Danish Radio Big Band.

Tuesday, September 25th

The winner of three prestigious awards – a Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship, the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship from the American Pianists Association, and the 2016 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists – Sullivan’s music embodies the essence of the blues and jazz as he connects music of all eras and genres through his improvisation. Judy and Sullivan met in Berlin and had an instant musical rapport. They will explore this in a evening of standards reinvented with drummer Leon Parker and bassist Doug Weiss.

Judy will debut her new duo with Gil Goldstein at the beautiful Kitano Jazz room.  For nearly four decades, pianist/producer/arranger Gil Goldstein has drawn the musical blueprint for some of the most prominent artists in jazz –(Michael Brecker, Bobby McFerrin, Esperanza Spaulding, Gretchen Parlato)  and in so doing, has become a highly influential figure in his own right. Gifted with an innate sense of compositional structure and harmonic balance, he has forged a diverse career that extends well beyond his own body of recorded work to include alternating turns as an insightful producer, a brilliant arranger and a prolific composer of more than a dozen film scores for the big and small screens. Judy and Gil fell in love with each others music and decided to create a unique duo with voice and accordion.

“Jim McNeely, their pianist and composer-in-residence. A Chicago native best known for his association with Stan Getz, he has quietly become one of the sharpest composers on the scene. “There’s every reason to hope that Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story” will improve upon the 1961 film, but I doubt if we’ll ever hear a more thrilling interpretation of that immortal score  than that of the Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band.”

What The Press Is Saying About
“West Side Story Reimagined”

“It’s the most ambitious reimagining of the music I have ever heard!”
Jamie Bernstein

“You have never heard such an ambitious, complex, and satisfying remake of that classic. Sanabria, an amazing drummer, draws deep from his Puerto Rican heritage to give this Leonard Bernstein masterpiece a roots-authentic update that’s heavy on Latin jazz influences and full of peppy, energetic rhythms.”
Tom Henry – Toledo Blade

“Among other things, it’s a master class in Latin rhythms. Just get it”
Ken McCarthy – Jazz on the Tube

“If you’re a fan of either Latin jazz or West Side Story, this album is a feast of those flavors.”
Marc Phillips – thevinylanarchist.com/blogspot

“The infusion of Latin rhythms that Mr. Sanabria uses is a big part of what makes this album so stunning.”
Dick Metcalf – Contemporary Fusion Reviews

“it’s a love letter to Bernstein as well as a reclamation, tracing his evocation back to the source.”
Nate Chinen – WBGO

“A triumphant, Latin-flavored reimagining of Leonard Bernstein’s masterwork West Side Story.
Bill Milkowski – Downbeat

A captivating and fulfilling recording that more than reimagines this enduring masterpiece.
Pierre Giroux Audiophile Audition

West Side Story Reimagined is Bobby’s retelling of the story in his way, seen through the eyes of love and gratitude and, often, uncertainty.
As Bobby says, this is “a reimagining from the perspective of a Jazz musician, a Latin musician, and a native Nuyorican son who is proud to say he is from the city that defines aché, hipness, and cool. Aché is Energy.
In my review of Bobby’s album, Multiverse, I said that “Bobby is a prophet of life.” That was never truer than with West Side Story Reimagined.

This set includes an accompanying 16 page booklet containing rare photographs of Maestro Leonard Bernstein, along with the timeless music of West Side Story featuring the rhythms of various Latin American countries with exciting breaking-down-the-wall instrumental big band arrangements all done through the lens of the Latin jazz continuum.

It’s the most ambitious reimagining of the music I have ever heard!”
– Jamie Bernstein

Partial proceeds from this special commemorative set will be donated to the Jazz Foundation of America’s Puerto Rico Relief Fund. The island has been completely devastated by hurricanes Irma and Maria and the government’s response has been less than adequate. What better way to help my ancestral homeland Puerto Rico and its people, than through the music of West Side Story Reimagined. – Bobby Sanabria

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT
Lost In A Crowded Place
(new summer 2018 release Audiophile 357)

shem.gif

“I would have singers study her phrasing on this disc- that wonderful science of balancing song and conversation, adherence to the melody and improvisation. How she does it from song to song, from chorus to chorus …making each song its own complete emotional and intellectual statement like an aural short story…is something quite remarkable.” – Michael Steinman, JAZZ LIVES

“Daryl: I listened to your album today and enjoyed it very much, all elements. Particularly the first track, your remarkable song, ‘The Land Of Just We Two.’ Lovely piece. Congrats all around.”- Dick Hyman

“Unique choice of tunes, musicians are super, musical joy…congrats on your 5 star recording!”
Frank Wilner, WNHN FM

“Lost In A Crowded Place’ is a marvelous CD. Daryl is in top form, the band sounds great, and the songs she selected are lovely too, some quite rare..the equivalent of 18K gold. Congratulations!” Carol Sloane

In addition to being a fine singer who knows how to extract the essence of each lyric, and a wonderful jazz pianist, Sherman is also adept at creating appealing melodies and literate lyrics. “The Land Of Just We Two” is a charmer and her hip lyrics for the Turk Mauro tune “Turkquoise” should find homes in the repertoire of other jazz-oriented vocalists.” – Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz Magazine

“Ms. Sherman is very much in prime form throughout. She performs superior mostly little-played standards, forgotten gems such as Barbara Carroll’s title song and Louis Armstrong’s “If We Never Meet Again”. Her tender yet quietly expressive voice sometimes hints at Mildred Bailey or Lee Wiley but sounds very much like herself while her piano playing is fluent and creative swing. This highly recommended set is *****!”
Scott Yanow, LA JAZZ SCENE

Verlon Brown (NAT/ Playwright) discovered his passion for acting during a stint at a Fresh Air Fund camp in Delaware; he was twelve years old. Hooked immediately, Verlon spent much of his summer performing in plays and assisting in other aspects of stage production. He excelled as an actor and loved breathing life into his characters. Verlon’s time in Delaware set the foundation for his professional career.

Verlon graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) and fully devoted himself to acting. He enrolled in formal acting classes at Queens College. To sharpen his skills and familiarize himself with the technical demands of his craft In 2004, Verlon’s humility and hard work were rewarded when a peer referred him to Black Nexxus, Susan Batson’s acting studio in New York. Though Verlon initially thought Susan’s classes were very different from anything he’d experienced, he persevered and eventually felt a freedom he’d never experienced as an actor. Now under Susan’s direction at Susan Batson Studios, Verlon lends his talent to a number of plays and ensembles. He recently portrayed Nat King Cole in Nat King Cole: The Vanguard of Avant Garde. For his role, Verlon dedicated himself to intensive character study and research, and as a result, he developed a profound respect for Nat King Cole’s body of work.

Innovative and creative by nature, Verlon’s peers have described him as generous, supportive, and kind-hearted both on the stage and off. He exudes a warmth and congeniality that actors, directors, and audiences appreciate. His willingness to help his fellow actors reach their pinnacles has become his trademark. Verlon is committed to his calling, and he brings an impeccable level of professionalism to every role.

Rome Neal (Director) Is the Artistic Theatre Director/Chairman of Board of Directors of the Nuyorican Poets Café. Mr. Neal received an Obie Grant with Café founder Miguel Algarin for excellence in theatre. Over the years he has received five Audelco Awards for his direction of Pepe Carril’s “SHANGO de IMA” and Samuel Harp’s “DON”T EXPLAIN” Mr. Neal also received two Audelcos for his acting: one for Lead Actor in Gabrielle N. Lane’s “SIGNS” at      Theatre For The New City  and one for Solo Performance in his critically acclaimed “MONK,” by Laurence Holder.
Neal also received the National Black Theatre Festival’s coveted Lloyd Richards Director’s Award.
His fifth Audelco Award was a technical award for his light design of “SHANGO de IMA.” Mr. Neal received a Triumph Award for his acting in Alex Mc Donald’s “PRISM” and a Monarch Merit Award for his outstanding contributions in New York Theatre. His directorial credits includes his adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “JULIUS CAESAR SET IN AFRICA,” Sekou Sundiata’s “THE CIRCLE UNBROKEN IS A HARD BOP” Amiri Baraka’s “MEETING LILLIE,” “SHANGO de IMA”, Alex McDonald’s “PRISM,” Ishmael Reed’s “THE C ABOVE C ABOVE HIGH C” and Amiri Baraka’s “PRIMITIVE WORLD: AN ANTI- NUCLEAR JAZZ MUSICAL,” all performed at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem North Carolina.
Rome directed Wesley Brown’s “LIFE DURING WARTIME” at the Cafe and The National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta Georgia. His production of Alex McDonald’s “PRISM” was performed at the Ex-Ponto Festival in Slovenia, Eastern Europe.

With alto saxophonist Jim Snidero, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, pianist Peter Zak, bassist Nat Reeves, and drummer Jimmy Cobb.

An all-star band of Jim Snidero, Jeremy Pelt, Peter Zak, and Nat Reeves celebrates saxophone titan Cannonball Adderley (born September 15, 1928) with the help of a very special guest: NEA Jazz Master drummer Jimmy Cobb. Cobb worked extensively with Cannonball in the 1950s, and his powerfully swinging drumming is featured on a series of classic Cannonball albums. Cobb and Cannonball’s most famous pairing, however, is undoubtedly on Miles Davis’ 1959 landmark Kind of Blue.

It is no exaggeration to say that together they made contributions that changed the history of jazz, and it’s an extraordinary opportunity to have Cobb involved in this celebratory performance. On top of this, the entire band is comprised of bandleaders who each sell out shows at Dizzy’s Club with their own groups.

This special concert will feature repertoire from the core group’s recently released album, Jim Snidero and Jeremy Pelt: Jubiliation! Celebrating Cannonball Adderley, which gives Cobb a chance to revisit several tunes that he himself originally performed and recorded with Cannonball.

Paul McCandless & Charged Particles
Known for soaring lyricism and gorgeous compositions, multi-instrumentalist and composer Paul McCandless plays soprano, tenor, and sopranino saxophones, oboes, English horn, bass clarinet, penny whistles, and a collection of folk flutes. During a distinguished career spanning three decades, McCandless has been integral to the sound of two seminal world music bands, the Paul Winter Consort and the quartet, OREGON. As a leader, McCandless has released 30 records. As a collaborator and solo artist, he has performed on more than 200 albums and appeared with such renowned all-star musicians as Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Wynton Marsalis, Lyle Mays, Mark Isham, Steve Reich, Al Jarreau, Bruce Hornsby and many more.

Charged Particles features three of the country’s virtuosos playing jazz while crossing stylistic boundaries and blending diverse traditions to create engaging new sounds. Murray Low is a keyboard wizard with dazzling Latin-jazz technique and imaginative improvisational skills. Aaron Germain is an inventive and sophisticated acoustic and electric bassist.  Along with fiery drummer Jon Krosnick, these players are making some of the most electrifying jazz in the country today.

Rare is the occasion when an artist arrives on the scene who fundamentally reawakens your understanding not just of music but world history, common cultures, and shared values. Dongfeng Liu is this very type of artist. He is a maestro composer, arranger, jazz pianist and educator who draws upon musical influences from his native China, and fuses them with American jazz harmonies with Caribbean rhythms. China Caribe uncovers those buried pages of history in which Chinese immigrants journeyed to the Americas as early as the 1860s. In fact, Havana boasted the largest Chinese population in the Western hemisphere during this period.

Liu’s CD celebrates and dramatizes these cultural cross currents. On this album, we hear what happens when cultures collide – a new sound, a unique aesthetic is born. You haven’t heard anything like China Caribe. I hadn’t. In a word, Liu’s music is peerless. These eight original compositions and arrangements are special and sparkling, meditative and magnificent.

The opening notes of In the Clouds are performed on the morin khuur, a Mongolian instrument that is also called a horsehead fiddle, in soundclips by the Hanggai Band, one of the leading folkloric Rock groups from Mongolia, and friends of Liu’s. This sound alone foreshadows what’s to come: We begin in the East, but by the time John Benitez’s round electric bass enters, we’re not quite back in the West but somewhere in between – a place that China Caribe will inhabit throughout each musical chapter.

Min Xiaofen plays the melody elegantly on the ruan, a traditional Chinese string instrument similar to a lute, with a round body and four strings. This piece is inspired by the Mongolian throat singing tradition called khoomei in which a vocalist sings two notes at once. In this tune, there is the sustained bass and melody. At the same time, the floating chords, taken together, form the second note. Indeed, the piece is masterfully conceived and arranged.
Mirror Image features Liu with well-placed piano lines, Roberto Quintero on percussion, and Francis Benitez on drums. The melody of the beginning A section is adroitly inverted into a 6/8 feel in the B section. Liu suggests that when we gaze at ourselves, look more closely, because there is more going on than meets the eye. Similarly, when you encounter others, don’t just look for differences, but identify the shared values that we hold dear. We’re more alike than apart.

Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon takes the melody from an ancient and folkloric Chinese song. Min Xiaofen takes the lead on the pipa, another ancient lute-style stringed instrument. She is followed by Liu performing the melody on the piano. There is a trenchant Afro-Cuban beat in 6/8 that creates an undulating, propulsive feeling until the timba 4/4 rhythm takes over during the solo section, in which Liu unleashes an incandescent improvisation that builds with block chords and dynamic phrasing.

I Know You starts with the intrepid hand percussion of Roberto Quintero which blends seamlessly into John Benitez’s syncopated bass groove. Indeed, the prelude and A section are in the odd-meter of 5/4, which transitions to 7/4 in the B section. “Latin music makes people want to dance,” says Liu. “But this piece isn’t suitable for dancing,” he observes. He notes that this is one of his favorite songs because the musicians have to interlock over an uneven rhythm, and ultimately have to learn about each other in the process. This piece is unadulterated virtuosity.

Arcadia is pure fusion. From the heavy synthesizer introduction and forceful back beat of the drums to piano painting and finally the melody on pipa. Liu chose the name of the song because it sounded like that of another world, the feeling he tries to evoke in this piece. Ultimately, the music is harmonious and suggests that it’s possible for people to make music (and live together) in a peaceful manner. Here too, Liu’s piano solo is pitch perfect, inhabiting the empty space, yet not clustering the piece with a barrage of sounds. The maestro uses the stillness, the calmness as an instrument itself which serves to dramatize the melody.

Coltrane’s Tune is Liu’s tribute to John Coltrane, whom he has long admired. The harmony is from Coltrane’s classic “Countdown.” Liu admits that the song is also inspired by Miles Davis’ “Tune Up.” Indeed, you can hear shades of both these vintage jazz songs. Of course, Liu renders them with novelty and originality. This tune is pure, uninhibited jazz trio.

Fisherman’s Song At Dusk comes from an ancient Chinese folkloric song. It refers to the performance of the Chinese Jiangnan Water Village during the sunset, as the fishing boats are sailing in the distance. Liu took this melody and recast it with several parts, from the cascading piano to the drums accenting the beats at the same time. Feifei Yang plays the melody on the erhu, a traditional Chinese bowed string instrument.

The album concludes with Moophy which is inspired by an instrument known as the “Moog Sub Phatty,” which Liu thoroughly enjoys playing. The A section has a terrific 7/4 groove that transforms into a 5/4 feel in the B section. The back-and-forth between Liu on the piano and Benitez on bass is the stuff of not just virtuosity but friendship. These two have forged a bond across idioms, styles, and cultures.

Admittedly, to say that this album is Chinese and Cuban can be reductionist. There are fifty-six ethnic groups in China alone who speak different languages and perform their own styles of music. Cuban and Afro-Caribbean music is certainly not without variety either. But this album will launch any listener onto a journey, even safari of discovery. It has been a pleasure producing Liu’s album with John Benitez and Doug Davis. We thoroughly enjoyed the adventure of fusing cultures and civilizations.

“I wanted to contribute a new voice, my voice to the conversation,” said Liu. Indeed, Liu has given us something to hold dear as we face the future. No matter the shifting sands of time and fate, we’re in a better place when we look for commonality. Liu has enriched and advanced that common language of all mankind – music.

Every ticket purchase comes with one (1) digital download of The Gipsy King’s upcoming album, Evidence!

Melding deep-heated flamenco, rumba, salsa and pop to the tune of 20 million albums sold, the Grammy Award-winning hit-makers behind ‘Bamboléo’ celebrate in their very own, blistering tradition – taking audiences back to the south of France with flamenco guitars and booming Spanish vocals.

Uniting the family Reyes and the family Baliardo, the band continues a tradition that has drawn famous fans such as Picasso, Cocteau, Dali and Chaplin. From playing on the streets of Cannes and the hedonistic heights of St. Tropez, breaking world music barriers as one of the rare groups to climb the US and World music charts. Featured in the likes of The Big Lebowski, Toy Story 3 and Glee, the band has embraced western classics by Bob Marley, the Doobie Brothers and The Eagles with globe-hopping grace, whilst also incorporating dramatic cues from Brazilian and Caribbean culture.

Now bringing the party back to the United States this summer, The Gipsy Kings will raise the roof with dance-ready furor, returning to their groundbreaking eponymous album and the nomadic spirit that has led them to their latest work, Grammy Award-winning album Savor Flamenco and a new project Experience – giving audiences the ‘deep shout at the heart of our community’.

with GRAMMY Award-winning Clarinetist/Saxophonist
Paquito D’Rivera

Free Waterfront Performance in Jersey City on September 14

shem.gif

Jersey City, N.J., August 9, 2018 – The NJCU Center for the Arts presents the annual NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band Concert on Friday, September 14 at 6:00 p.m on the J. Owen Grundy Pier, Exchange Place, in Jersey City. Conducted by retired NJCU Professor Richard Lowenthal, this free concert will feature GRAMMY Award-winning guest artist Paquito D’Rivera in a tribute to WBGO Newark, the world’s flagship jazz radio station, and the 80th anniversary of the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s landmark performance at Carnegie Hall.

Born in Cuba, jazz legend Paquito D’Rivera grew up listening to Benny Goodman recordings – in fact, it was these records that inspired his childhood dream of becoming a jazz musician in New York City. The winner of 14 GRAMMY Awards, D’Rivera has had an extraordinary career that spans jazz, Latin jazz and classical music. He is the recipient of the Living Jazz Legend Award from The Kennedy Center, the National Medal of the Arts from the United States, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Carnegie Hall, and an NEA Jazz Master from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Each September since 2013, the NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band has brought together the University’s professional graduates with high-profile guests for a waterfront concert at Exchange Place. “This concert showcases the quality of our degree programs in jazz, and is a way for us to share this talent with the Jersey City community,” explained President Sue Henderson. “Just as Benny Goodman inspired Paquito D’Rivera, we see NJCU as a source of inspiration and learning for current and future generations of jazz musicians and audiences.”

The musical selections on this year’s program celebrate two anniversaries that are significant to the evolution of jazz as a quintessential part of American culture. In 1938, 80 years ago, the Benny Goodman Orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall, making a powerful statement with a racially integrated band on stage, and forever moving jazz from the dance floor to the concert hall. Radio station WBGO first aired in 1948 as the voice of the Newark Board of Education, and became a dedicated jazz outlet in 1979, 40 years ago. Since then, WBGO has become a seminal champion for jazz, creating an international platform for high-quality programming that encompasses a variety of styles and eras.

“There are many artists who would be an appropriate choice to salute WBGO,” said Amy Niles, CEO and President of the radio station, “but there isn’t anyone better than long-time Hudson Country resident Paquito. He exemplifies the spirit of WBGO with his outgoing joyful personality, his constant desire to improve, his quest to expand the boundaries of his music, and his passion for humanity. We are honored that NJCU has chosen to salute WBGO and our jazz family and has invited Paquito to participate.”

The NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band features accomplished musicians who studied at the school as far back as the 1960s, when Professor Lowenthal started the jazz program. Performing this year will be drummer Rich DeRosa (who also arranged some of the band’s charts); sax players Mark Friedman, Noelle Rueschman, Bob Magnusson, Dave Noland, and John DiSanto; trumpeters Freddie Hendrix, Nate Eklund Marcell Bellinger, and Vinnie Cutro; trombonists Rob Edwards, Mike Modero, Danny Hall and Conrad Zulauf; and faculty members Andy Eulau on bass and Alan Farnham on piano. Vocalist and NJCU graduate Vanessa Perea will join the band for several tunes associated with Sarah Vaughn and Benny Goodman.

The sponsors for this free concert include the NJCU Foundation, Hampshire Companies, Claremont Companies, the City of Jersey City, Arch Insurance, Inserra Supermarkets, NJTV, RBC Capital Markets, NJN Insurance Group, Dresdner Robin, the Hudson County Office of Culture and Tourism, Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs, Del-Sano Contracting, Palisades Medical Center, Ponce Bank, Connell Foley, PRC Group, BCB Community Bank, Hyatt House, Hyatt Regency Jersey City, New Jersey Broadcasters Association, New Jersey Jazz Society, Hot  House Jazz Guide, Exchange Place Alliance, and WBGO.

The NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band Concert with Paquito D’Rivera is free and open to the public, and will take place on the J. Owen Grundy Pier at Exchange Place. Food trucks will be on site and seating is on a first-come, first served basis. In event of rain, the concert will be held in the Harborside Atrium, Harborside 2 and 3 at 34 Exchange Place. The J. Owen Grundy Pier is located near public transportation and there are numerous parking lots in the area. For more information, visit www.njcu.edu/arts

ABOUT PAQUITO D’RIVERA

Paquito D’Rivera defies categorization. The winner of fourteen GRAMMY Awards, he is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. Born in Havana, Cuba, he performed at age ten with the National Theater Orchestra and, at 17, became a featured soloist with the Cuban National Symphony. A founding member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, he directed that group for two years, while at the same time playing both the clarinet and saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he was a founding member and co-director of the innovative musical ensemble Irakere, which brought him his first GRAMMY in 1979.

Mr. D’Rivera is the first artist to win Latin GRAMMYs in both Classical and Latin Jazz categories, and his recordings include more than 30 solo albums. D’Rivera’s highly acclaimed ensembles — the Chamber Jazz Ensemble, the Paquito D’Rivera Big Band, and the Paquito D’Rivera Quintet — are in great demand worldwide.

While D’Rivera’s discography reflects an enthusiasm for Jazz, Bebop and Latin music, his contributions to classical music are impressive. They include solo performances with the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. In addition to his extraordinary performing career, Mr. D’Rivera has rapidly gained a reputation as an accomplished composer. His commissions include compositions for Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Library of Congress, the National Symphony Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Turtle Island String Quartet, Ying String Quartet, the International Double Reed Society, Syracuse University, Montreal’s Gerald Danovich Saxophone Quartet, the Grant Park Music Festival, and Opus 21.

D’Rivera is the recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters Award, the National Medal of the Arts, the Living Jazz Legend Award from the Kennedy Center, and has been awarded numerous other honors both nationally and internationally. He has served as artistic director of jazz programming at the New Jersey Chamber Music Society and continues as Artistic Director of the Festival Internacional de Jazz de Punta Del Este in Uruguay and the DC Jazz Festival in Washington, DC.

This is the sixth year the NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band will present a waterfront concert on the J. Owen Grundy Pier. Previous concerts have been 100th Birthday Salute to Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, and Thelonious Monk, with guest artists Jon Faddis and Cyrille Aimée; A Tribute to Lew Soloff of Blood Sweat &Tears with Randy Brecker; A Tribute to Clark Terry with special guest Wynton Marsalis; A Salute to the Other Jersey Boys with John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli and Ed Laub; and A Celebration of the Inauguration of President Sue Henderson with trumpeter Jon Faddis.

These annual concerts are conducted by Professor Richard Lowenthal, who retired in June 2017 after 50 years at the University. Mr. Lowenthal founded the Jazz Program at NJCU, then Jersey City State College, in 1969. Under Professor Lowenthal’s leadership and continuing with Professors Ed Joffe, Walt Weiskopf, and Gabriel Alegria, NJCU boasts a strong jazz program on both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

New Review by Matt Hooke All About Jazz
Turned into Lemonade is a solid offering by the Asheville NC based Shulman. His songwriting and soloing abilities are solid, and his band shows excellent chemistry.

Simon Sargsyan Interview with Richard Shulman: The intellect best serves the soul
Read it HERE

About Turned into Lemonade
This is the fourth album of original music from The Richard Shulman Group and I’m honored to be working with such skilled and intuitive musicians. Turned into Lemonade is melodic, harmonically inventive jazz influenced by Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Paul Winter, Oregon, Bill Evans, and Jay Beckenstein. This collection of compositions/performances is a blend of melody, fire, water, groove, mutual exploration and beauty which I hope will uplift you the listener as much as creating it has uplifted me.” —Richard Shulman

“Richard Shulman is a gifted pianist/composer with a distinctive goal: creating music that’s joyful to the ear and uplifting to the spirit. Bothsophisticated and accessible, his work has the harmonic sense of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans and is designed to inspire and soothe, even when it swings.” —All Music Guide Biography by Dr. Judith Schlesinger.

Hugh Wyatt of the New York Daily News calls Shulman “most enticing.. a new find… in the Keith Jarrett tradition who cleverly and interestingly weaves a number of different cultures into his music.”

“The playing throughout is consistently superb. The music is worth repeated listening and offers different dividends each time. Richard Shulman is a major composer and performer who deserves and will attain wider recognition.”

Frank Salamone, in reviewing Shulman’s recording “A Simple Gift.”

Four top European and American jazz artists
combine forces to create eight colorful and intriguing originals.

The post-bop music covers a variety of moods, puts the emphasis on the ensembles, and is full of subtle surprises.

SHIJIN is a co-op group consisting of saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart, keyboardist Malcolm Braff, bassist Laurent David, and drummer Stéphane Galland. Each of the musicians has vast experience in a variety of idioms with creative jazz being the foundation. For their self-titled recording debut, the international quartet performs eight group originals that, while open to fusion and the funkier side of jazz, are beyond any simple classification and reflect their varied musical journeys.

The opening “Smells Funny” is a menacing strut that has tenorist Schwarz-Bart and bassist David playing the theme with the support of keyboardist Braff and drummer Galland. The music soon gets heated with the soloists improvising over an infectious groove. The funky “Anemoi” is concise with Schwarz-Bart taking the lead on soprano with the electronic ensemble building up the music before fading out.

The colorful “Afro Bear” lets listeners imagine a bear having some adventures in the wilderness. The episodic piece has a catchy theme and mostly focuses on the group’s distinctive ensemble sound. “New Neighborhood” features a folkish melody that is played by Schwarz-Bart at several different tempos over the stimulating rhythms.

While a generally laidback performance, “The Bait” finds the group infusing the number with plenty of passion. “Blitzt’s Z’Zuri?” has a hot tenor solo from Schwarz-Bart and features Braff playing complex lines on his keyboards. “Discomania” is not really disco but 1970s-style fusion with Braff taking the lead. SHIJIN concludes with “The Edgewater Hotel,” a joyful original based on a rhythmic figure played by Galland.

Each of the musicians has had impressive solo careers. Jacques Schwarz-Bart was born in Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. Being the son of a pair of prominent writers, he seemed headed for a career as a statesman. However at 24 Schwarz-Bart began playing the saxophone, he started studying at Berklee three years later, and he has been a busy musician ever since. Along the way he has worked with Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor, Danilo Perez, Ari Hoenig, Meshell Ndegeocello, D’Angelo and Chucho Valdes. As a leader he formed the Gwoka Jazz Project, blended modern jazz with ritual voodoo music in The Jazz Racine Haiti project, and collaborated with pianist Omar Sosa in The Creole Spirits.

Stéphane Galland, who is from Belgium, started playing drums when he was three. After taking lessons in classical percussion, he began playing jazz when he was 11. With his group AKA MOON, he has recorded over 20 CDs and performed worldwide. Galland has explored many different cultures in collaborations with artists from Africa, India, Asia, Turkey, Europe and America and has worked with such top jazz artists as Joe Zawinul, Joe Lovano, Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Mark Turner, and Robin Eubanks. His own project LOBI explores multiple ancient musical traditions in a modern and futuristic way.

Pianist and keyboardist Malcolm Braff was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, grew up in Dakar and Switzerland, and began playing piano in public when he was just six. He has led over 20 records of his own and has performed around the world, often leading his own groups.

Bassist Laurent David from Paris started out studying classical guitar before switching to the electric bass guitar when he got involved in jazz. He has worked and recorded with the jazz trio TRIAS, guitarist Ahmad Mansour, Ibrahim Maalouf, and a variety of adventurous improvising musicians, appeared at many European jazz festivals. He is the creator and artistic director of the non-profit music label Alter Nativ recently shifted his home base to New York.

The combination of Schwarz-Bart, Galland, Braff and David results in musical magic throughout the consistently intriguing, accessible and unpredictable SHIJIN.

Contemporary vibraphonist Dan McCarthy returns to Cornelia Street with some of New York’s finest improvisors to present an evening of original avant-garde jazz. Known for his “show-stopping” and “arresting” style (George Harris, All About Jazz Los Angeles), McCarthy has been a regular performer on the NY jazz scene since 2004. He has performed or recorded with musicians such as Steve Swallow, Ben Monder, Ari Hoenig, and George Garzone.

Dan’s dark and ethereal compositional style, along with his unexpected and angular improvisation, has led Nate Chinen at The New York Times to label Dan as “a vibraphonist with a charismatic and pointedly contemporary style”.

You And The Night And The Music is the debut of Lucia Jackson, a promising young jazz singer who displays a fetching voice on a set of standards along with a few surprises.

With her father, jazz guitar great Ron Jackson, contributing arrangements and leading an impressive rhythm section joined by guests, Lucia Jackson creates fresh variations of timeless material.

Lucia Jackson has had busy careers as both a dancer and a model. However her love of singing, her obvious talents as a vocalist, the encouragement of her father, and very favorable receptions at many venues in the New York area have led her to release her debut recording. Her many fans raised $15,000 through Indiegogo for the project. With the vocal coaching of the world renowned bassist-vocalist Nicki Parrott and an inspired repertoire, Lucia is heard at her very best throughout the program.

For the memorable effort, Lucia Jackson is joined by her father Ron Jackson on guitars, pianist Yago Vazquez, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Corey Rawls, with guest appearances by Daniel Garcia on flamenco guitar, violinist Frederika Krier, Javier Sanchez on bandoneon and percussionist Samuel Torres playing cajon and congas.

The music on You And The Night And The Music features new twists on classics from the Great American Songbook, many of which are arranged in tango, bossa-nova or bolero styles by Ron Jackson, who is also the set’s producer. The song choices, which include not only vintage tunes that have special meanings for the singer such as “Beautiful Love,” “Sophisticated Lady” and “Never Let Me Go,” but Julia Michael’s recent “Issues,” the Beatles’ “And I Love Him,” and Ms. Jackson’s original “Feel The Love,” give the set both variety and consistent high quality. While the supporting cast is strong and Ron Jackson’s solos are colorful and tasteful, the main focus is on the young singer, who comes through in winning fashion.

Some of the highlights on You And The Night And The Music include:

“Just One Of Those Things”:  – The 1930s standard is taken uptempo, includes some superior and straightforward jazz singing, and has a hot guitar-drums tradeoff.

“And I Love Him”; – The Beatles classic is transformed into a vocal-guitar duet and sung with great tenderness.

“I’m A Fool To Want You”: – Lucia Jackson’s interpretation is full of quiet longing, accentuated by Frederika Krier’s passionate violin.

“Feel The Love”: – An original by the singer and Daniel Garcia, this piece gives her an opportunity to sing over a funky rhythm that, with Garcia’s acoustic guitar, also has the feel of flamenco.

“No Regrets” and “When You’re Smiling”: – The pair of joyful swingers are each given exhilarating treatments with Ms. Jackson also scatting quite effectively on the latter.

You And The Night And The Music is a significant recording debut for it introduces Lucia Jackson as a subtle and lightly swinging jazz singer, one with a very attractive and often-fetching voice who displays a quiet intensity and a real feeling for the lyrics that she interprets.

Lucia Jackson, who was born in New York, grew up in Madrid, Spain where she started singing when she was ten. She studied voice and piano at the prestigious Escuela de Musica Creativa when she was 13 and also ballet and flamenco at the Professional Dance Conservatory. Returning to New York when she was 18, she has since danced with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre as a guest student, at the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival and, as a member of FJK Dance, toured China for two months. As a jazz singer, she has performed with many groups including the Bud Maltin Orchestra, Marty Schwartz, and the Art Lillard Big Band.

At age 26, Lucia Jackson is set to make a major splash in the jazz and music worlds with the release of You And The Night And The Music from the Roni Music label.  Her large fan base, which through the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign made the recording possible, will be pleased.

Samuel Martinelli, an up-and-coming drummer from Brazil who is based in New York and has been generating a stir in both the jazz and Brazilian music worlds, makes his recording debut as a leader on Crossing Paths. While his drumming is supportive and he plays stimulating ideas behind his sidemen, Martinelli’s six new compositions make it obvious that he is a talented songwriter too.

For this colorful project, Martinelli features a quartet that includes the great veteran trumpeter and flugelhornist Claudio Roditi (who, in addition to his own projects, has worked with such giants as Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D’Rivera and McCoy Tyner), pianist Tomoko Ohno (her credits include Slide Hampton, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, James Moody and Diva) and bassist Marcus McLaurine who worked with the Count Basie Orchestra and was Clark Terry’s bassist for nearly a quarter-century. Each of these musicians is equally adept at performing jazz and Brazilian music. While there is always a strong Brazilian tinge to the music on Crossing Paths, the performances are modern straight ahead jazz. Born and raised in Brazil, Samuel Martinelli earned a degree in Music Therapy, developing programs that uplift the lives of the elderly with music. He moved to New York City in 2014, studying for his Masters in Jazz Studies at the City University of New York – Queens College. Among his mentors was drummer Dennis Mackrel. Martinelli has since worked with many top artists including Claudio Roditi, Hendrik Meurkens, Nilson Matta, Maurice Peress, and Tres Urbanos, a Brazilian trio with bassist Itaiguara Brandao and guitarist Welsey Amorim. As an educator he has created Brazilian Clef, a Brazilian Music Workshop project which teaches students and the public about Brazilian music.

Crossing Paths is an excellent introduction to the playing and writing talents of drummer/songwriter Samuel Martinelli’s and makes for an enjoyable listening experience.
