Virtuoso guitarist Vinny Raniolo has built a widespread global fan base, thanks to his engaging approach to early jazz, his regular appearances on PBS specials, and his collaborations with six-string giants including Bucky Pizzarelli, Frank Vignola and Tommy Emmanuel.

Vinny’s love of flying is just about on par with his devotion to music, and with the release of his brand-new CD, Air Guitar, the 6-string wizard and pilot has found a way to connect his two passions.

Air Guitar, Raniolo’s much-anticipated debut recording as a leader, features a cache of 15 classic tunes related to flying and the wild blue yonder, by composers ranging from Benny Goodman to John Denver. The selections travel from the birth of aviation (the 1910 rarity “Come Josephine in My Flying Machine”), through gypsy jazz (into the clouds with Django Reinhardt’s “Nuages”) to the easy swing of Jimmy Van Heusen (“Come Fly With Me”). Raniolo also delves into the Great American Songbook with classic tunes by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, and more.

Though Air Guitar is Vinny’s first album as a leader, he’s far from a newcomer to jazz. The Nassau County guitarist got interested in jazz at age 16 after a teacher introduced him to to records by masters of jazz guitar such as Joe Pass, John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Herb Ellis and others. Vinny fell in love with the music immediately and realized, “That’s what I want to do.” He began gigging as a teen, and his career really took off when he paired up with fellow guitarist Frank Vignola at age 22.

Since then, Vinny Raniolo has garnered widespread attention and praise from critics and fans alike for his playing with Four Generations of Guitar, Rhythm Future Quartet and other ensembles. He maintains a busy international touring schedule, and appears on numerous albums, including duos with Vignola, and as a sideman and a sought-out accompanist for singers. Vinny is also recognized as an educator and is the author of several instruction books.

As for his other obsession, Vinny grew up around pilots, flight instructors and planes, but the flying bug didn’t bite till recently. He was hooked from his first lesson, about three years ago; now the brilliant guitarist is also an instrument-rated pilot, currently working toward obtaining a commercial license.

The flying guitarist’s passions are more closely connected than they might seem. “My background in music definitely helps with my overall understanding. It’s learning another language, and there are a lot of crossover skills such as coordination and math,” Vinny points out. “ I think that in life we are always playing jazz: You are alert to the environment around you and quickly improvise based on your knowledge of the situation. Just like music, aviation is a lifelong study and takes a lot of dedication.”

The choice of concert venue is as special and as personal as the music: Audience members will have a chance to view a full exhibition of aviation history during a pre-concert cocktail hour, with hors d’œuvres, plus a cash bar.

Bassist Elias Bailey, an in-demand player who has performed and studied with many of the top names in jazz, joins Vinny on Air Guitar, and onstage at the Reckson Center at the Cradle of Aviation Museum concert, as they celebrate the release of the new CD.

This special event takes place at the Reckson Center at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Long Island, April 27, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Deb Burke’s Interview
With
Gabriele Tranchina

On A Jazzy Blog
The Moon Rises with Gabriele Tranchina

shem.gif
What The Press Is Saying:

“Tranchina is a vocalist with a unique sound. There is the fragility of Stacey Kent and Astrud Gilberto but with the tonal quality of Nadia Basurto.”
– Ian Lomax, Jazz Journal

“Gabriele Tranchina, whose fourth release (and first since 2010), Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes, demonstrates the singer’s firm grasp across styles, genres, and, yes, languages.
The singer’s voice is singular and well balanced, capable of low purrs and assertive exuberance. Refined and fine is Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes.“
▪ Michael Bailey – All about jazz

“Not your typical bossa/Latin set that you can set and forget while you sit back and enjoy it, Tranchina has a way with the special sauce, ladling it out in just the right measure at just the right time. A sassy modern take on a classic vibe, this nicely ear opening set is a tonic of feel good music throughout. Check it out.”
▪ CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest record

“Gabriele Tranchina moves like a fish in the water through different rhythms, with an educated and wonderful voice. She is able to walk through different moods, languages and musical genres. The one based in New York is an explorer by nature and this is printed in each of her songs.”
▪ Luis Felipe VALERO ARISTIZABAL

“Gabriele surprises with her ability to hold steady notes that other singers might artificially push down to make smoky, or force up to sound light. All of Tranchina’s notes sound right and expertly turned. None of the notes sound as though the singer has strained to reach them. In short, she doesn’t make a grating sound.
Tranchina’s work flows easily from one cultural to the next. Each piece of the instrumentation meshes with the other, and none of it overwhelms the singer. That is important; the album remains one of vocal jazz and listeners get a chance to hear who the singer is, as shown through the work.”
▪ Doudie Miller-Gould, Lemonwire

A world artist, a jazz vocalist, a creative interpreter, a heavenly sound, a woman with a unique view of music, the world, and of singing.  This is just a small description of songbird Gabriele Tranchina.  She brings to her music a worldview — using music as a force for wholeness, a source of unity and energy for all.

Setting sail into oceans of music, drawing from the world’s beauty and versatility.

A sailing ship is sure to encounter various adventures in its travels — sunshine, storms, calm waters, and high waves. Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist of broad tastes and distinctive experiences, the amazing Gabriele Tranchina.

Each cut found on Of Sailing Ships and The Stars in Your Eyes (Rainchant Eclectic Records, RER1001, Oct 2017) is a side trip to a new destination. Bossa, Latin, swing, ballads, a 7/4, improv…. sadness, hope, joy, relationships, the future… all are there. We are again reminded of how much music is a true and accurate reflection of life itself. Gabriele sets foot on many shores, singing in 5 languages and a vocalese on the 7/4  “A Song for India”. This CD is a progression of her desire to explore music and rhythms from different cultures.

Gabriele Tranchina, vocalist, is joined on this album by her husband pianist, composer and arranger, Joe Vincent Tranchina, who fills the tunes with unusual textures and shapes, guiding the high-level musicians in the band. His tastes, too, are complex and unexpected and the arrangements add an enormous richness to the overall impact of the individual tunes and the entire album.

The other musicians in the band Carlo De Rosa (bass), Grammy award winning Vince Cherico (drums) and Renato Thoms (percussion) each give a distinctive flavor with their individual specialties, contributing unique aspects to each melody and rhythm. Whenever a group of musicians of this highest level gathers, the music they spontaneously create is impossible to categorize or even capture in words. Only listening will truly reveal what has been sculpted as it arose in each moment.

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Diane Moser releases her 7 th CD, Birdsongs, inspired by nature’s most lyrical master improvisers—songbirds. Birdsongs combines virtuoso playing, heartfelt originality, and a unique and personal vibe, resulting in music that is exotic yet accessible, like the aural creations of Moser’s fine feathered friends. This new album is likely to vault the multi-talented pianist from her longtime local-favorite status into the top tier of national voices to be reckoned with in jazz. On Birdsongs , Anton Denner on flute and piccolo, and Ken Filiano on bass join the pianist in a trio setting to present nine songbird-inspired tunes, including seven originals. Over the past decade, Moser has performed Birdsongs at venues across the country with different instrumentation from solo piano to big band, acoustic to electronic, and everything in between. “The reason I decided on this group with Anton and Ken, to record all of my birdsongs, was to give the music a little more space and lightness,” Moser explains. “I also knew that both Anton and Ken would play sonically in those in-between places that is so much like the songs and calls that birds make, not always an exact pitch, but somewhere in between.

What The Press Is Saying About Diane Moser’s Birdsong Trio

Dee Dee McNeil/Jazz Journalist Musicalmemoirs’s Blog March 4, 2018
“..a stunningly original package of music that celebrates birds in a very jazzy way..not only beautiful in sound and structure, but this is extremely relaxing music.”

“Here are three very talented human beings who desire to commemorate birdsongs on their instruments. I find them to be incredibly successful. This is a very beautiful production of original music by Diane Moser, capably interpreted by her stellar piano skills and the two talented musicians who accompany her on bass, flute and piccolo…not only beautiful in sound and structure, but this is extremely relaxing music.”

Dick Metcalf Contemporary Fusion Reviews February 26 2018
Diane’s wonderful piano compositions are supported impeccably by flute/piccolo from Anton Denner and bass by Ken Filiano… & don’t let the “avian” moniker throw you for a loop… this is some of the most beautiful jazz you’ll ever hear… I give Diane and her bandmates a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this splendid album.

Midwest Record February 20, 2018
“Very much in the realm of a Sunday afternoon egghead session, this recital is [a] well conceived round of sitting down jazz that’s a lot fun if you just let it be. Very much a welcome diversion.”

Leonid Auskern, Jazz Quad, February 2, 2018
Diane and her colleagues play chamber music, very refined, beautiful and inspired by the breath of wildlife. This, of course, is jazz, and high-end jazz. But if you are closer to academic music, then I think you will not be disappointed by Birdsongs. The musical impressionism of Diane Moser carries an almost religious feeling of admiration for the beauty and unity of music and nature.

Dodie Miller-Gould, Lemon Wire February 15, 2018
To many listeners, it will call to mind the way some bird species bob from branch to branch. All the while, the birds’ actual songs are replicated with the woodwind, and somehow, the sound of flapping wings appears to have been re-created, too. The song is fun, with listeners trying to match instrument sounds to bird behavior and songs. But the arrangement of sounds never allows audiences to forget that they are, in fact, listening to jazz. Moser [and her band] remind audiences to marvel at nature and enjoy the ways in which jazz can be used to express a variety of aspects of the human experience.

SOLO:

“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.”
        Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.”
        George Goodman, New York Times

“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.”
        Don Freeman, San Diego Union

“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.”
       Munchner Merkur (Munich)

TRIO (reviews of latest CD with Buster Williams & Matt Wilson):

“There is almost no one musician playing today who can deconstruct a standard and then put it back together again like Denny Zeitlin. On his breathtaking album, Stairway to the Stars he does just that… Mr. Zeitlin literally owns the piano and commands it to do his bidding when he sits down to play… He is almost without parallel in jazz and the equal of any musician in the classical realm as well… The recording is worthy of being judged to be a masterpiece… His pianism is echoed by the brilliance, of course, of bassist Buster Williams and the percussion colouring of drummer Matt Wilson… “
      Raul da Gama, Jazzdagama

“5 Stars [highest rating]… A studio release of this magnitude would be a great album. Stairway To The Stars as a live release is catching lightning in a bottle!”
      Brent Black, Criticaljazz

“… like all of Denny’s albums, it’s an adventure… Denny turns standards inside out without abandoning their spirit. Songs start with a familiar reference point, with Denny then layering the melody with gorgeous chord changes. Then he takes us off on an improvisational voyage deep inside the song, giving you insight into what makes it special and what holds it together… let go and feel the tidal pull of his approach and enjoy his scuba exploration of music, where the notes dart around like tropical fish. This album is worthwhile for Oleo alone. Trust me, no matter how well you know Sonny Rollins’s standard, you don’t know it like this.”
      Marc Myers, Jazzwax

“… These three are formidable together… What sets the Zeitlin-Williams-Wilson trio apart is its openness and ardor: They approach this material as if it’s never been played before, deconstructing the melodies and rebuilding them in their own image. Zeitlin, who had already been playing professionally for three-and-a half decades at this point, favors a sensitive, inquisitive touch on ballads with which Williams and Wilson naturally empathize. They’re clearly in love with each other’s playing.”
      Jeff Tamarkin, JazzTimes

“… The evening’s set is mostly ballads, except for a crisply bopping take of Oleo that takes you for a white knuckler of a ride … This disc is one for the ages.”
      George Harris, Jazzweekly

“… [the trio displays] a spirit of fun, adventure and devil-may-care panache. ..Few pianists working today have his command of harmonic depth, his “just right” and sometimes daring touch with a melody… always supple touch and endless inventiveness… A beautiful set … .”
      Dan McClenaghan, Allaboutjazz

Multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Moss, a veteran of New York’s free jazz scene, has assembled a brand-new 22-piece band, the Accidental Orchestra, for Helix, the premiere recording of a pair of his latest extended compositions. Helix kicks o with “The Old One,” which gets its title from Einstein’s name for God. Moss describes this ve-piece suite as “an initiation into sacred ground.” He views it as part of a musical tradition stretching from the earliest ritual over the dead to Bach’s Mass in
B Minor, through Native American rites of passage into the spirit world, the Jewish mourner’s Kaddish, and Buddhist funeral rituals.

Moss wrote See Sharp or Be Flat/C# or Bb while recovering from a fracture su ered in tripping over a curb. The composer brings
a quirky sense of humor to the situation, right down to deciding to name his ensemble the Accidental Orchestra in memory of the incident. Moss aimed to let the band swing on this contrapuntal theme and variations mixing jazz, rhythm and blues, and the joy of dance. “Throughout I refer to Norwegian Wood (The Beatles), I Feel Good (James Brown), and Bags Groove (the Modern Jazz Quar- tet), but do not resort to familiar big band tropes,” Moss explains. “This is a type of string orchestra, but with lots of jazz musicians pushing the boundaries.” The Chicago-born, Madison, Wisconsin-educated Michael Moss has been an active member of the New York jazz scene for 50 years, earning recognition for his skill and imagination as a multi-reed player, and for the freshness and intensity of his writing. The self-described “farthest-out cat” was a mainstay of Manhattan’s famed loft jazz scene, playing with Sam Rivers, Dave Liebman, Paul Bley, Annette Peacock, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Richie Beirach and scores of others. He’s equally at home from a duo setting to an orchestra of 50-plus players. His musical studies have taken him across the globe and through the centu- ries, absorbing the music of Thailand, the Middle East, Ireland, Europe, East Africa, and elsewhere, with Renaissance orchestras, folk melodies, chants, blues, Latin and other styles catching his ear. With Helix, “I am extending an American musical heritage, stretching from Charles Ives, Scott Joplin, Fats Waller, and Louis Armstrong into the future,” Moss says. Listeners can’t help but be captivated by what they hear, as they accompany Moss and the Accidental Orchestra on this life-long journey.

What people are saying about Jazz Superheroes:

Phil Schaap: “Informed and heartfelt!”  Curator: JALC

Gary Giddins, major award-winning jazz author of Satchmo: the Genius of Louis Armstrong writes…”Eve Zanni has worked out the details of this project with her heart, brains, and a profound knowledge of jazz and its makers. Her book treats jazz in an accessible manner that is at once witty, smart, original, and great fun. Quite unlike anything I’ve seen, her inventive approach to music and history clears away the pedagogical cobwebs and will rouse the curiosity and enthusiasm of young readers and their teachers.”

Scott Yanow, jazz journalist/historian and author of 11 books : “Eve Zanni’s Jazz Superheroes would make a great addition to any music or jazz appreciation class. Through its colorful stories, it serves as an excellent introduction to youngsters about the world of jazz.”-

Henry Ferrini, Filmmaker “Why isn’t jazz appreciation taught in elementary schools?  Because they don’t have this book.  Now there IS a jazz curriculum for kids that allow them access into America’s only original art form.  I wish these wonderful materials were available when I was in school.”

Marion Nesbit, Ph.D., Professor Lesley University “From jazz superhero stories to ‘riff banks’, Ms.Zanni’s vibrant curriculum is expertly developed, thorough and easy to use.  It is sure to capture students’ interest and inspire their appreciation for jazz.”

Dominique Eade, acclaimed jazz vocalist, composer, faculty New England Conservatory “Ms.Zanni’s guide offers teaching that comes from a vast historic knowledge of the music of the African diaspora through academic research and personal experience as a practicing musician…she has developed a curriculum that is multilayered, teaching children about important musical ideas through inspiring personal stories…the theme of individual dedication and conviction runs through the lives of each ‘super hero’…”

Professor Mili-Bermejo Greenspan, Berkely College of Music;  “…what Ms. Zanni has accomplished goes beyond a regular music guide, it enters the realm of contextual teaching, including history, culture, socio-political aspects, and most important: what moves artists to create, the story of their struggles to make a living and express themselves, the story of Survival, and the Power of music. “

Larry Goldings

With his signature Hammond organ style and versatility on many keyboards, Boston native Larry Goldings (b. 1968) has traversed not only the wide spectrum of jazz where he is perhaps best known, but also the worlds of funk, pop, and electronic music.  High in demand as a sideman, Goldings’ sound can be heard on scores of albums by artists in virtually every musical genre.

Over the years, Goldings has been closely associated with Michael Brecker, Jim Hall, Maceo Parker, Madeleine Peyroux, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and since 2002, with folk/pop icon, James Taylor.  In 2007, Goldings, Jack DeJohnette and John Scofield, received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Jazz Instrumental Album Individual or Group for their album, Trio Beyond – Saudades (ECM)

In the mid 1990’s, The New York Times described the organ trio of Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein, and Bill Stewart as “the best organ trio of the last decade.”  The trio, which has now been together for over almost 30 years, has been recognized for charting new ground, with its synergistic playing, yet thoughtful music.  They have recorded over a dozen albums, all of which display their distinctive sound, whether exploring the depths of jazz standards, or playing their own original compositions.

Goldings also is active as a composer, arranger, and producer.  His compositions have been recorded by Michael Brecker, Till Brönner, Jack DeJohnette, Sia, Lea Michele, Bob Dorough, Jim Hall, Jane Monheit, Gaby Moreno, John Scofield, Curtis Stigers, and Toots Thielemans.  Goldings’ music also has been featured in television shows and motion pictures, including, “The Office,” “Proof,” “Funny People,” and “Neighbors.” He scored his first feature film, “Dealin’ With Idiots” in 2013, directed by Jeff Garlin.

Peter Bernstein

Guitarist Peter Bernstein (b. 1967) has been an integral part of the world jazz scene since 1989.  He has been sought out by musicians from all generations — touring with legendary players such as Jimmy Cobb, Lou Donaldson, Bobby Hutcherson, Lee Konitz, Sonny Rollins, and Dr. Lonnie Smith and jazz stars of today such as Eric Alexander, Brad Mehldau, Diana Krall, Nicholas Payton, and Joshua Redman.  His recognizable guitar voice graces over a hundred recordings.

As a leader, Bernstein has recorded six highly regarded albums, displaying not only his masterful interpretations of standards, but also his inventive and lyrical compositions.  His latest project, Monk (Criss Cross), shows Bernstein’s deep understanding of the complexities of Thelonious Monk’s music, while never becoming overshadowed by Monk’s powerful personality. Bernstein also has taught at the Julliard School, Berklee College of Music, North Texas State University, the New School Jazz Program, and the Jazz Conservatory in Amsterdam.

Guitar legend Jim Hall said that Bernstein “is the most impressive young guitarist I’ve heard…He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste, and has paid attention to the past as well as the future.”

This is the 9th year of The Hudson Valley Jazz Festival.

Our goal; to highlight local jazz talent,  celebrate America’s musical art form and continue to support those who hire live music.

The monies raised are used in the following ways:
– Create programming
– to promote the series which is Aug 9 -12
– to supplement musicians pay which primarly comes from the presenting venues.
– a percentage will be donated by us to The Jazz Foundation of America which provides performance opportunities to emergency living expenses to medical care to housing, the Jazz Foundation offers a variety of programs and assistance for jazz and blues musicians in need.

No one from the this festival organization is on salary.

The support from the public, local media, cafe’s, restaurants, other concert series’ , the Village of Warwck and others has meant a great deal to us.

Your help will help us to present new artists, as well as those folks have enjoyed over the years. And a big thank you to Jim Eigo and Jazz Promo Services for their ongoing support.

Diane Brawarsky
Through the interplay of colors, textures and forms of painted images and physical objects, I tell stories that echo my past experiences. My work reveals that memories are real and imagined, personal and impersonal, and opens a space for the viewer to register an emotional response.

Jerzy Kubina
Ceaseless observation of the constantly changing reality which surrounds me provokes a struggle for a new quality of expression.  Genuine creative process is fundamental in my exploration.  My artistic work is an attempt to express my reflections on spiritual and existential values.

Kit Demirdelen
When my children were born, I started working in fabric because I needed a medium that was portable and didn’t require an elaborate studio.  At first, using felt was a substitute for painting, but as I worked with it, I began to love its organic quality, and the act of sewing spoke to my new role as mother.  The bold patterns and colors connect me to my own mother, who loves Marimekkko dresses and who taught me to sew.  These sewn pieces are very intimate and are a link between the generations of my family.

The 3-time GRAMMY® nominated drummer Duduka Da Fonseca will be releasing what he considers to be one of the most expressive works of his career playing the compositions of the legendary pianist Dom Salvador with his Brazilian based Trio, featuring pianist David Feldman and bassist Guto Wirtti.

Coming Out On April 13th

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Rio de Janeiro, Spring 94

“Da Fonseca divulges a keen awarness of where Brazilian jazz has been and where it’s headed.”
Todd Jenkins, Down Beat

“Da Fonseca embodies the pulse of a Brazilian Samba School with a full-set reverie, a percussive wall of sound that seems to come at you from all angles”
Ken Micallef, Modern Drummer Magazine

“Drummer Da Fonseca perhaps the best Brazilian trap drummer of his generation, plays  with uncommon mix of finesse and drive.”
Mark Holston, Jazziz

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira.  He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.”
THE NEW YORKER

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”

Billy Hart
The merging of Brazilian music and American jazz changed the trajectory of modern music. The inceptions of bossa nova, samba jazz, and other fusions enable Brazil to make its mark on jazz and beyond, via some incredible musicians and composers, including the legendary Dom Salvador. The remarkable pianist and his classic trios, which blended samba and jazz, made an impression on many during the mid-1960s, including a young Duduka Da Fonseca.

Fonseca’s initial exposure to Salvador’s music came as a teenager in Rio de Janeiro. The budding drummer could hear Salvador’s original trio rehearsing, featuring bassist Sergio Barrozo and drummer Edison Machado, while walking to school. When the group released their seminal recording, Rio 65 Trio, Fonseca was completely spellbound by the music and practiced along to the record religiously, forever engraining Salvador’s music into his psyche.

Though he had met Salvador briefly in Rio, Fonseca didn’t have a chance to play regularly with his idol until 1980. Having been in New York City for five years, Fonseca had played with a who’s who of modern jazz legends, so when Salvador’s drummer wasn’t available, the pianist called Fonseca to fill in. Fonseca surprised Salvador by knowing Salvador’s repertoire backwards and forwards, thus cementing a bond that led to years of playing and touring together.

Salvador and Fonseca played regularly during the 1980s in a quartet that also featured saxophonist Dick Oatts and bassist Dennis Irwin. Their collaborations have continued to this day. In 2015, Fonseca’s relationship with Salvador came full circle when he was asked to play Machado’s parts on the 50th anniversary celebration of the Rio 65 Trio recording at Carnegie Hall.

Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador was born from the leader’s love of Salvador and his music and Fonseca’s effort to make a proper tribute to his friend and mentor. The featured trio was born of a 2000 meeting with pianist David Feldman, who was studying then at the New School in New York, and with whom Fonseca recorded with later in 2009 in Brazil, where he also met the trio’s bassist, Guto Wirtti.

In the efforts to make the best recording and present Salvador’s music in the best light, Fonseca reached out to Salvador for lead sheets for his compositions. Feldman also took time to consult Salvador and learn the repertoire from its source, removing any doubts about structural and interpretive nuances. Many of Salvador’s songs seem simple but have difficult elements, most notably in the rhythmic combinations.

Fonseca traveled to Brazil three times: the first to rehearse the music, the second to record over two days, and the third to mix and master. The trio aimed to make the recording as natural as possible, eventually using many first or second takes.

The recording begins with a tune from that inspiring Rio 65 Trio album, “Farjuto,” a breezy composition whose title comes from dated Rio musician slang. ironically meaning “not so good.” The modal of groove of “Transition” is augmented by a variety of rhythms emanating from the Northeastern provinces of Brazil. The haunting “María” is a minimalistic ballad named for Salvador’s wife of 50 years, which the trio molded in the spirit of Keith Jarrett’s memorable take of “It’s Easy To Remember.” The ensemble performs “Antes Da Chuva” in a looser fashion than the Salvador original, while the straight samba of “Samba Do Malandrinho” is bouncy and smart, apropos to its rascally namesake. The sly “Temátrio” is a grooving composition that emerged from Salvador’s second trio around 1966.

The title of “Gafieira” refers to an old Rio tradition of a ballroom dance incorporating some acrobatic elements, the difficult composition prancing along in a brilliant display of melodic and rhythmic complexity. Salvador’s beautiful ballad “Para Elis” is a dedication to the pianist’s former employer, the iconic singer Elis Regina, and finds the trio augmented by the great cellist Jaques Morelenbaum. Performed and recorded as a samba, “Valsa De Esquina” was originally composed as a Brazilian waltz by Salvador, so the trio transformed it into a Bill Evans-esque jazz waltz. The upbeat “Clauditi” is a tribute to a great friend and collaborator, trumpeter Claudio Roditi, and features rhythmic elements of samba and the pre-samba maxixe. Perhaps Salvador’s most famous composition, “Meu Fraco é Café Forte” (or “My Weakness Is Strong Coffee”) utilizes an intriguing arrangement by Wirtti that introduces the melody in half time before speeding it up.

Duduka Da Fonseca and his wonderful trio of David Feldman and Guto Wirtti pay tribute to Brazilian jazz legend Dom Salvador on the enchanting Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador by highlighting the composer’s brilliant music but also giving it new life with new contemporary arrangements.

It’s a cold, rainy Saturday night in Spanish Harlem, but inside Camaradas El Barrio the scene is a fuego! The wine is flowing, the mofongo is tasting good and Fernando García’s sextet is percolating on the bandstand with a fiery abandon that is palpable to the crowd. As they launch into a wild, whirlwind descarga take on the Duke Ellington-Juan Tizol classic “Caravan,” García fuels the clave with his left foot on the cowbell while traversing the kit with polyrhythmic aplomb as pianist Gabriel Chakarji lays down an entrancing montuno. A consummate conductor from the behind kit, García nimbly shifts insinuating rhythms from song to song — chachalokafún to bembé to cuembé to sicá to timba — while never letting the groove slip. Slovenian-born saxophonist Jan Kus adds husky-toned tenor over the top as guitarist Gabriel Vincéns dazzles with single note flurries while conguero/barrilero Victor Pablo stokes the flames. It doesn’t get much hotter than this.
Like a master rhythmatist, García juggles all the intricate polyrhythms, odd meters and quick tempo shifts with assuredness and authority. The Puerto Rico native and New York City resident is fast emerging as a talent deserving of wider recognition for both his remarkable adeptness on the kit and his considerable skills as a composer-arranger. On Guasábara Puerto Rico, García organically blends folkloric bomba rhythms and jazz in a myriad of satisfying ways. Backed by his core group of Kus, Vincéns, Chakarji, Pablo and bassist Dan Martínez, the drummer and his simpatico crew of youngbloods push the envelope on García’s third album as a leader and debut for ZOHO Music.
Special guest Miguel Zenón, the acclaimed saxophonist-composer-bandleader and native of San Juan, elevates the proceedings on the dramatic and turbulent title track. “Miguel is one of my big heroes,” says García. “I’ve been following his music since 2006. His album Esta Plena is a perfect example of mixing the folkloric Puerto Rican music with modern jazz harmony and polyrhythms. So I’ve gotten a lot of influences from him.”
García is following in the footsteps of innovators like Zenón and other Puerto Rican-born musician-composers like David Sánchez, William Cepeda and Edsel Gómez. Growing up in Guaynabo, he absorbed the music of Hector Lavoe, Cortijo, Ismael Rivera, Willie Colón and the Fania All-Stars and was also hugely influenced by El Sonido Nuevo, the classic 1966 collaboration between Cal Tjader and Eddie Palmieri. Meeting master percussionist and folklorist Rafael Maya in Guaynabo exposed him to bomba, the folkloric music of Puerto Rico, in a profound way. “Rafael’s studied a lot of the cultural history of Puerto Rico in the early 1900s,” García explains. “I met him in 2011 when I lived with my parents in Guaynabo and had a recording studio in their garage. Rafael contacted me about recording a bomba CD with his group, Desde Cero, and before I knew it he started bringing all these really famous bomba musicians into my parents’ garage. So I was hanging with these great people who have played those rhythms for their entire life. And it was then that I got hooked on bomba.”
Maya not only taught García the folkloric track “Guaynabo Me Tambor,” a calindá rhythm arranged for the ensemble by García on Guasábara Puerto Rico, he also contributed the beautiful “Se Va” to the album. “Rafael sang those tunes on his iPhone to my voicemail,” García recalls. “That’s how I learned them. ‘Se Va’ actually has lyrics but I did an arrangement as an instrumental where it goes from a yubá rhythm, which has a 12/8 type of feel, and then changes into an accelerated seis corrido rhythm, which gets really intense.”
The time-shifting opener “Audubon,” written in 2014 when García was living on Audubon Avenue in the Washington Heights section of northern Manhattan, makes use of a device by the composer that creates a kind of rhythmic illusion. As he explains, “I was trying to superimpose the four feel on top of a big 3 feel. It flows perfectly with this pattern based in three, played by Victor mimicking batá chachalokafún rhythm on three conga drums. Then there’s this section on the guitar solo where it goes into this Afro-Cuban bembé feel in 3, which actually comes from the 12/8 abakuá rhythm. Finally, it goes into the percussion tradings near the end of the tune. So it’s playing games with the time feel without actually shifting the beat.”
On “Ideas Convergentes,” García skillfully creates a confluence of odd meters — cuembé in 5/4 with an overlying 7/4 with the snare, then a fast seis corrido in 7/4 for the solos and back to cuembé in 5/4 for the barril solo. “It’s like a delta, where the different streams of a river meet before going out to the ocean,” he explains. “It gives a sense to the listener of being in a boat ride and you’re constantly shifting on the tides and the waves. There’s definitely a beat going on but you’re not sure when it all meets. And I think it’s cool that I didn’t solo on that tune because I’m just holding it down in five on the drum kit while Victor on the barril has the liberty on his solo to accelerate or decelerate and not feel that we’re going to lose the groove.”
The title track opens with a dramatic chant feel in the drums. Tenor saxophonist Kus enters, channeling his inner Trane on the meditative vibe before taking off in close conversation with Zenón on the melody. Rhythmically the tune shifts from a yubá in 5/4 to a sicá in 5/4 and finally a holandé in 5/4. Vincéns offers up a cleanly-articulated, fleet-fingered solo along the way that sounds like it’s coming out of the Pat Martino school, and he’s followed in kind by potent solos from pianist Chakarji and alto sax great Zenón. Garcia turns in a crackling solo on this turbulent 9-1/2 minute suite. “The term ‘guasábara’ is from the Taíno language and it means conflict or even in some cases like a battle,’ he explains. “So that’s the drama of this tune.”
The tranquil 7/4 cuembé vehicle “Healing Prayer,” which finds Kus on soprano sax, is the calm after the storm of “Guasábara Puerto Rico.” And while García composed both tunes before the terrible events of September 20, when Maria struck Puerto Rico as a strong Category 4 hurricane, they stand now as a kind of soundtrack to the devastation and recovery of the composer’s homeland. “The first four songs of the album sound like a timeline of what happened in Puerto Rico and what’s happening in the weeks after,” he says. “It’s an amazing coincidence.”
“The Element,” one of García’s newer compositions, is a churning sicá in 3/4 that morphs into a yubá along the way. He says it was inspired by taking composition workshops with Argentinian pianist-composer Guillermo Klein, leader of the group Los Guachos. “Working with Guillermo opened up a new way of thinking, a new way of writing and exploring rhythmic illusions.”
The album closes on an exhilarating note with the Afro-Cuban flavored timba-jazz number “Tiempo,” which has Martínez switching to electric bass and features an incendiary drum solo by García against Pablo’s churning percussive groove at the tag.
Throughout Guasábara Puerto Rico, García has one foot firmly entrenched in the folkloric tradition of bomba while striding confidently into more modernist territory with the other. — Bill Milkowski

Jazz fans know they can count on the Highlights In Jazz concert series to showcase the gifted players who shaped jazz history and continue to contribute to its long and rich legacy. This third concert of the 46th season is no exception: The music is sure to dazzle – and swing – when you have such renowned musicians on hand as pianist Dick Hyman, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, bassist Jay Leonhart, saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski, and drummer/vibraphonist Chuck Redd.

Listeners will benefit from this stellar aggregation’s more than 200 years of combined jazz experience when these players hit the stage.

At 91, pianist Dick Hyman, is a mainstay of the series and a 2017 NEA Jazz Master. In the mid-1940s, Dick won a dozen piano lessons with the great Teddy Wilson in an on-air radio competition; by 1950, he was touring Europe with Benny Goodman’s orchestra. Since then, he’s repeatedly demonstrated his versatility, mastering multiple facets of jazz. Dick has also written film scores and orchestral compositions, made countless concert appearances and released well over 100 albums as a leader. He landed seven Most Valuable Player awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for his studio work, plus two Emmys for his TV work. Dick was also among the first musicians to record with a Moog synthesizer.

Among the illustrious friends joining Dick Hyman on the BMCC stage during this special event:

Trombonist Wycliffe Gordon first landed on jazz listeners’ radar in 1989 as part of Wynton Marsalis’ Septet; he was an original member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, starting in 1995 . Wycliffe has performed with David Sanborn, Rene Marie, Dianne Reeves, Anat Cohen, Arturo Sandoval, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Flanagan, Shirley Horn, Joe Henderson, and Eric Reed, to name just a few. The trombonist has released close to three dozen CDs as a leader or co-leader, and is a perennial winner of “best trombonist” honors  from numerous publications and professional organizations.

Bassist Jay Leonhart was dubbed “the Fred Astaire of jazz” by the L.A. Times’ Don Heckman, who described him as “a craftsman so seamlessly smooth that casual observers often fail to grasp the immensity of his talent.” Jay has kept good musical company throughout his career, having performed with Duke Ellington, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jim Hall, Buddy Rich, Roy Eldridge, and other jazz greats. The bassist is also lauded for his singing, composing, and witty lyrics. Though one of Jay’s best-known tunes is called, “It’s Impossible to Sing and Play the Bass,” he does both with great skill, much to the delight of audiences.

Saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski had his first pro gig while still in elementary school, playing in a Polish polka band in his native Cleveland. From that moment, he knew a life in music was his destiny. Ken studied with Sonny Stitt, and played with classic bands like the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and with Benny Goodman. He’s also collaborated with Mel Torme, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing,   Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell,  James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, and Bill Charlap. Ken has released several albums as a leader and appeared on more than 400 recordings as a sideman.

Drummer/vibraphonist Chuck Redd is a veteran musical road warrior, with more than two dozen European tours under his belt with the likes of Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, Terry Gibbs, Conte Candoli, and others. Chuck has appeared with Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme, the Lionel Hampton Big Band, Tommy Flanagan, Ray Brown, and the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. The drummer/vibraphonist has released several albums under his own name, and appeared on scores of others with Nicki Parrott, Harry Allen, Houston Person, John di Martino, Ray Drummond, and others.

The special guest—a trademark of this long-running concert series—is a well-kept secret until curtain time. A spectrum of jazz greats have filled the role, from the venerable Eubie Blake to the 15-year-old John Pizzarelli—the celebrated guitarist’s first Highlights In Jazz appearance. Sometimes there are even extra-special guests: Producer Jack Kleinsinger met Ray Nance for the first time when the trumpeter came backstage to say hi at one of the concerts in the series. Though Ray didn’t have his ax with him, Jack persuaded him to take to the stage to sing and dance with the featured band.

Kleinsinger is a hands-on producer, which makes the Highlights In Jazz series unique. You’ll see Jack on stage, introducing the musicians and sharing his vast knowledge of jazz history. He also structures the shows, laying out a format, specifying types of tunes—perhaps a ballad, followed by something up-tempo–but leaving the specific song choices to the players. “That way, there’s not eight guys standing around on stage wondering, ‘What are we going to do now?’ Sometimes I’m surprised by what they choose, but I trust the musicians, they’re all veterans,” Jack notes. His active role inspires him to continue producing the series. “I wouldn’t want to just book acts for 40-some years. Producing like this is fun for me.”

All lineups are subject to change without notice.

You won’t want to miss a single concert of the 2018 season of Highlights In Jazz!

NEW JAZZ SERIES TO BE LAUNCHED IN NYC’S ICONIC MUSIC VENUE

In Touch Entertainment announced today its three new music programs to start in April

ea71c4a6-4f46-4914-bd27-161c163af79e.jpg

NEW YORK, NY (March 28, 2018) – April is Jazz Appreciation Month and In Touch Entertainment is adding three new programs — Vocal Mania, Boss Tenors, and Dangerous Rhythms — to its already successful series of performances held at a legendary New York jazz venue, Zinc.

Since its inception in 2017, Strings Attached jazz series, featuring four of New York City’s premier six-string jazz masters on a single stage – Jack Wilkins, Vic Juris, Joe Cohn, and Mark Whitfield — has been a regular feature at the Zinc. Piano Jazz and Trumpet Masters programs were also added to the Zinc’s line-up last year.

“Because of the critical acclaim of these concerts, we expanded the original, guitar-centric series to include other instruments like piano, saxophone, and trumpet, as well as vocals,” said In Touch’s CEO, Charles Carlini.

“Jazz Appreciation Month honors all the significant contributions this music genre has made around the world, so we decided to launch the new series to coincide with this celebration,” he said.

Debuting in April, Zinc will present Vocal Mania, Boss Tenors, and Dangerous Rhythms, which focuses on Latin jazz.

Vocal Mania, premiering on April 4, will feature singers Janis Siegel and Lauren Kinhan, accompanied by piano, bass, and drums as well as special guest vocalists.

Starting on April 5, bestselling author and Latin music lover T.J. English (Havana Nocturne, The Westies) will host  “Dangerous Rhythms.” The performances will feature multi-Grammy nominee Bobby Sanabria & Sexteto Ibiano on April 5, guitarist Jorge Chicoy on April 12, and on the 19th, Geraldo Contino Y Los Habaneros, named in 2015 by NPR/WNYC stations as the Best Band in Manhattan.

Saxophonist George Garzone will perform in the Boss Tenors series on April 11.

More April and spring lineups are listed here https://intouchent.com/events.

Also planned is a Percussion Masters series.

“The Strings Attached series has had an enthusiastic reception from our audiences, and we are sure that positive feedback will continue with the new Vocal Mania, Boss Tenors, and Dangerous Rhythms programs and the excellent artists we feature,” Carlini said.

He added that the choice of Zinc Bar, an iconic club located at 82 W 3rd St in Greenwich Village, was not coincidental. “I’ve had a long association with the Zinc jazz club since its inception in the early 90s. I felt it would be a great venue to launch and test many of these ideas that I’ve been incubating for some time. Plus, its present location was once a place called Club Cinderella, where Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk used to perform and attracted such celebrities as Mae West and Frank Sinatra.”

INSTRUCTOR BIOS:

Instructor Vic Juris has been called one of the leading jazz educators throughout the world; he is also the author of several educational jazz books.  Vic studied with Charlie Banacos and Pat Martino and has performed with Barry Miles, Richie Cole, Eddie Jefferson, Jimmy Smith, Mel Torme, Nancy Wilson, and Sarah Vaughan. As a member of the Dave Liebman Group he traveled and performed throughout North America, Europe, Japan and Israel.  He was a member of the Gary Peacock Quartet and is leader and musical director of the Charles Mingus Guitar Quintet.  An instructor at The New School in NYC, the New York Jazz Workshop School of Music, Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts, Lehigh University, The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective, and a Youth Jazz Canada Artist-in-Residence, his workshops have been called “an absolute must for serious jazz guitarists.”

Born in northern Bergen County, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Ed Laub studied guitar with Bobby Dominic and Bucky Pizzarelli.  He has performed in Jazz Festivals, concert halls and clubs throughout the New York/New Jersey area, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Kitano, The Iridium, Birdland, PNC Arts Center, Bickford Theatre, NJ-PAC, Berrie Performing Arts Center, The Annual Elkhart Jazz Festival and Smalls Jazz Club in Greenwich Village.  For many years he has partnered with his close friend and mentor, the renowned Bucky Pizzarelli, playing jazz festivals and venues in the Metropolitan area and in cities across the US.  When not working with Bucky, Ed is in demand as an accompanist; as one of the more accomplished 7-string guitarists, he adds a pianistic style that makes a duo sound more like a trio.  Other outstanding musicians he has performed with include Gene Bertoncini, Howard Alden, Paul Meyers, Martin Pizzarelli, Jack Wilkins, Russell Malone, Frank Vignola and pianist Russ Kassoff.  Ed also made several appearances with the late Kenny Rankin, one of his idols.

Jerry Vezza and Grover Kemble
Celebrate More Then 25 Years Together
Tunes and Tales at the Bickford Theatre on April 5
shem.gif
(Morristown, NJ) – Pianist Jerry Vezza and singer/songwriter Grover Kemble celebrate their more than 25 years of musical partnership with a concert they are calling “Tales and Tunes Together.” This engaging duo has shared many musical experiences which they will showcase, joined by bassist Rick Crane, drummer Tom Sayek, and saxophonist Anton Denner. The concert takes place at the Bickford Theatre on Thursday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m.

There is no one like Grover Kemble, a singer/songwriter whose entertaining style has captivated audiences not only in the New York-New Jersey region, but also at internationally known places such as the Newport Jazz Festival, The Bottom Line, The Other End, Wolf Trap in Virginia, The Roxy in LA, the Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival, and the Spoleto Arts Festival in Charleston. Early in his career, Grover sang with Sha-Na-Na and then fronted the popular Za Zu Zaz. His partnership with John Pizzarelli led to a lifetime friendship and several recordings. And his collaborations with jazz pianist Jerry Vezza have led to sold out shows at Madison’s Shanghai Jazz, one of the highest rated jazz clubs in the country.

New Jersey favorite Jerry Vezza is the consummate jazz pianist and appears regularly at jazz clubs in the area. He is a musician who embodies the classic jazz values of melodic warmth, rhythmic subtlety and true elegance.  Jazz critic Zan Stewart wrote that “Vezza sings with his hands” and “plays resplendent jazz piano.” It is no wonder that the combination of Jerry and Grover adds up to an evening of wonderful music, entertaining stories and lots of humor.

Bassist Rick Crane is a highly sought after player whose work draws on a gorgeous melodic style. He has worked with many of the top jazz artists including Vic Juris, Bucky Pizzarelli, Cyrus Chestnut, Joe Morello, Warren Vache, and Benny Golson. Saxophonist Anton Denner has played alongside some of the greats including Ray Charles, Rosemary Clooney, Mel Lewis, and Clifford Jordan. As an educator, he has taught at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, Seton Hall  University, and the Montclair Music Studio.  Drummer Tom Sayek has worked with Jerry Vezza for many years. A graduate of the Berkeley School of Music in Boston, Tom brings a tasteful, steady rhythm to the mix and can be heard regularly around the state.

Start the weekend early with Tales and Tunes Together featuring Grover Kemble and Jerry Vezza on Thursday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and may be purchased online at morrismuseum.org, by phone at (973) 971-3706, or in person at the Bickford Theatre Box Office. Morris Museum members pay $20 both in advance and at the door. The Morris Museum’s Bickford Theatre is located at 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morristown, NJ, and offers free parking and full accessibility. Box office hours for phone sales are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Walk-up hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“….Overall, the album casts a warm, clear glow, with plenty of cohesive interplay between Stryker, organist Jared Gold, drummer McClenty Hunter, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. While influenced by many guitarists, Stryker remains true to his own vision. Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell may be touchstones, but Stryker forges his own sound throughout.” – Martin Kasdan

Critical Praise For Strykin’ Ahead

“A mainstream record of undeniable beauty”
Vittorio Lo Conte /  Music Zoom Italy

If you have chops like Dave’s; his musical sensibilities; his uncanny ability to put together interesting instrumentations; his skill at selecting just the right band mates to make Jazz with; wouldn’t you want to work all the time, too?

It becomes like anything you’re good at; you want to do it as often as possible but occasionally vary the context to keep it from getting stale.
Steven Cerra Jazz Profiles

A real burner of a set, it feels like an artifact from the past, unreleased from Bluenote/Verve, but it’s modern, contemporary touches are well evident showing how a cat that’s been hitting all the right notes for all these years can’t make a false step now.
CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest Record Editor and Publisher

I give Dave and his talented crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this one… and keep in mind that you heard it here first… this one is BOUND for the awards.
