19th ANNUAL CENTRAL BROOKLYN JAZZ FESTIVAL

April 13 through May 13, 2018

shem.gif

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brooklyn, New York, March 22, 2018– Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium presents New York City’s longest continuously running grassroots festival dedicated to Jazz. More than 500 artists are performing in over 50 events at, mostly, intimate venues throughout Brooklyn, during this month-long celebration of the music. The performances and programs are financially accessible and open to all.

The nineteenth annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival features varied events, suitable for fans of all ages. At the Youth Jazz Jamboree, student musicians perform the music of Brooklyn’s hall of fame members, for their peers, family, and residents. Jazz! The Women’s Viewpoint, a forum, for female artists to relate their experiences in a male- dominated industry, is relevant to all genders. The Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame induction ceremony, for Sidney “Duke” Jordan, occurs at The Billie Holiday Theatre, in the presence of the nine living members of this select group.

Festival 2018 includes performances by international-renowned artists, nationally recognized names, and up-coming talent. NEA Jazz Master, Jimmy Owens, shares festival spotlight honors with, Ahmed Abdullah, Ronnie Burrage, Akua Dixon, Louis Hayes, Pucci Amanda Jhones, Martha Redbone, and Lonnie Youngblood. Names to take note of, Lesedi Ntsane, Lisanne Tremblay, and Giveton Gelin, also display their artsy. Over 50 percent of the events are free, or less than ten dollars.

Brooklyn’s jazz legacy dates back over a half-century, during the borough’s noted hard- bop styling era. Freddie Hubbard’s fiery session with Lee Morgan at Club La Marchal; Horace Silver’s gigs at the Club Continental, and the boss bass man, Reggie Workman at the East, attracted mostly intrepid audiences into central Brooklyn’s clubs. “The renaissance of the jazz scene here, is due, partly, to the efforts of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium. We reclaimed our “jazz destination” status, based on the proliferation of venues with jazz music policies throughout central Brooklyn,” states, CBJC’s communication director, Bob Myers.

Something magical happens when outstanding jazz players ranging in age from their 20s to their 80s take to the stage and create common ground. That’s what you’ll experience at Highlights In Jazz’s upcoming “The Millennials Meet The Masters” concert, featuring saxophonists/clarinetists Peter and Will Anderson, trumpeter Dominick Farinacci, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Buster Williams, trombonist Steve Turre, and pianist Tardo Hammer.

For Highlights In Jazz founder Jack Kleinsinger, variety is the spice of concert production. He delights in bringing together musicians from different generations, genres and backgrounds. Kleinsinger aims for unusual pairings, treating the audience to something they’re not likely to hear in a club. “None of my lineups involve a working group. All-star jams are my stock-in-trade, and have been for 40-some-odd years,” he notes. While Kleinsinger has a roster of regulars he’s brought in since the early days of the Highlights In Jazz series, “We’ve made an effort to expand and bring in as many young artists as we can. There are so many wonderful players out there, it’s amazing.”

Scheduled to appear at the upcoming “The Millennials Meet The Masters” concert are:

Saxophonists/clarinetists Peter and Will Anderson: Hailed by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other august publications for their remarkable virtuosity, the identical Anderson twins began steeping themselves in classic jazz while still in elementary school. They  absorbed the styles and sounds of Benny Goodman, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie, and cite Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker as early influences. Since moving to the Big Apple, they’ve played with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, the Village Vanguard Orchestra, and Wycliffe Gordon. In addition to releasing two albums as leaders, the Juilliard-trained twosome have appeared off-Broadway celebrating the music of Artie Shaw and the Dorsey Brothers.

Pianist Tardo Hammer: This native son of Queens, NY, has been part of the Big Apple jazz scene for almost four decades. He’s been the pianist of choice for Art Farmer, Annie Ross, Lionel Hampton, Clifford Jordan, Abbey Lincoln, Jon Hendricks and a host of other giants of the genre. Besides being an in-demand sideman and respected educator, Tardo Hammer has released a half dozen well-received albums as a leader.

Drummer Jimmy Cobb: The fact the he played on the timeless Miles Davis album Kind of Blue and Coltrane’s iconic Giant Steps would have been enough to guarantee Jimmy Cobb a space in the jazz pantheon. And then there was his work with Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter, Dinah Washington, Wes Montgomery, and his own bands, such as Cobb’s Mob. It’s no exaggeration to call Jimmy Cobb one of jazz’s reigning elder statesmen, and at age 89 he’s showing no signs of slowing down. He continues to teach master classes across the country and around the world. The veteran drummer gigs regularly, and he keeps sounding better and better, according to more than one critic.

Trumpeter Dominick Farinacci: A 21st century renaissance man, trumpeter Farinacci cites Louis Armstrong, Charlie Shavers and Clifford Brown among his earliest influences. Dominick has been a global ambassador for Jazz at Lincoln Center, explored the connection of music and wellness, delivered a TED talk, raised funds to help communities devastated by natural disasters, and garnered numerous awards and top honors at various trumpet competitions. This versatile musician is equally at home playing a Horace Silver jazz standard, a Tom Waits tune, or delving into material by the Gipsy Kings. Besides playing with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Heath and Benny Golson, Dominick has released about a dozen recordings as a leader

Trombonist Steve Turre: You may recognize Bay Area-born Steve Turre from his long tenure in the Saturday Night Live band, but that’s only part of his story. Steve spent a year on the road with Ray Charles; was mentored by Woody Shaw, who brought him into Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and went on to play with Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, J.J. Johnson, Van Morrison, Max Roach, Tito Puente and many others across the musical spectrum. A stint with Rahsaan Roland Kirk along the way introduced Steve to the musical possibilities of playing seashells, creating melodies that equal the natural instruments in beauty. Steve has recorded as a leader with strings, shells, and in numerous other configurations, including his recent well-received album Colors for the Masters.

Bassist Buster Williams: An in-demand bassist since his teens, it might take less time to list the jazz giants Buster hasn’t played with. His first gigs were with Jimmy Heath, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, followed by stints with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Chet Baker, Geri Allen, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, Stan Getz and Mary Lou Williams, and a breath-taking array of others. Beloved by singers, Buster worked with Nancy Wilson for close to a decade, plus other greats including Betty Carter, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, Nnenna Freelon, Etta James, and Roseanna Vitro, to name a few. Buster has also fronted his own band throughout his career, recording more than a dozen albums as a leader.

Listeners will want to keep an ear out for a special surprise guest, another Highlights In Jazz trademark. Spontaneity is a hallmark of jazz, and this concert series is no exception. The surprise guests at the very first Highlights In Jazz concert were guitarist Gene Bertoncini and clarinetist Phil Bodner. Sometimes special guests are added at the last minute: “Paquito D’Rivera showed up in the audience, and I gave him cab fare to go home to get his horn at intermission so he could sit in with the band,” Kleinsinger recalls with a laugh.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, this is the stuff that jazz fans’ dreams are made of.

All lineups are subject to change without notice.

You won’t want to miss a single concert of the 2018 season of Highlights In Jazz!

CURRENT SHOW THROUGH MAR. 31

DIANE BRAWARSKY, JERZY KUBINA & KIT DEMIRDELEN

Come see the beautiful art and arrange to meet the artists!

As a special feature of the Jazz Forum space, the club presents a rotating exhibit of area artists. The works are for sale and a portion of the proceeds are a donation to support the club and the free summer concerts, both programs of Jazz Forum Arts.

Diane Brawarsky
Through the interplay of colors, textures and forms of painted images and physical objects, I tell stories that echo my past experiences. My work reveals that memories are real and imagined, personal and impersonal, and opens a space for the viewer to register an emotional response.

Jerzy Kubina
Ceaseless observation of the constantly changing reality which surrounds me provokes a struggle for a new quality of expression.  Genuine creative process is fundamental in my exploration.  My artistic work is an attempt to express my reflections on spiritual and existential values.

Kit Demirdelen
When my children were born, I started working in fabric because I needed a medium that was portable and didn’t require an elaborate studio.  At first, using felt was a substitute for painting, but as I worked with it, I began to love its organic quality, and the act of sewing spoke to my new role as mother.  The bold patterns and colors connect me to my own mother, who loves Marimekkko dresses and who taught me to sew.  These sewn pieces are very intimate and are a link between the generations of my family.

The 3-time GRAMMY® nominated drummer Duduka Da Fonseca will be releasing what he considers to be one of the most expressive works of his career playing the compositions of the legendary pianist Dom Salvador with his Brazilian based Trio, featuring pianist David Feldman and bassist Guto Wirtti.

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Rio de Janeiro, Spring 94

“Da Fonseca divulges a keen awarness of where Brazilian jazz has been and where it’s headed.”
Todd Jenkins, Down Beat

“Da Fonseca embodies the pulse of a Brazilian Samba School with a full-set reverie, a percussive wall of sound that seems to come at you from all angles”
Ken Micallef, Modern Drummer Magazine

“Drummer Da Fonseca perhaps the best Brazilian trap drummer of his generation, plays  with uncommon mix of finesse and drive.”
Mark Holston, Jazziz

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira.  He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.”
THE NEW YORKER

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”

Billy Hart
The merging of Brazilian music and American jazz changed the trajectory of modern music. The inceptions of bossa nova, samba jazz, and other fusions enable Brazil to make its mark on jazz and beyond, via some incredible musicians and composers, including the legendary Dom Salvador. The remarkable pianist and his classic trios, which blended samba and jazz, made an impression on many during the mid-1960s, including a young Duduka Da Fonseca.

Fonseca’s initial exposure to Salvador’s music came as a teenager in Rio de Janeiro. The budding drummer could hear Salvador’s original trio rehearsing, featuring bassist Sergio Barrozo and drummer Edison Machado, while walking to school. When the group released their seminal recording, Rio 65 Trio, Fonseca was completely spellbound by the music and practiced along to the record religiously, forever engraining Salvador’s music into his psyche.

Though he had met Salvador briefly in Rio, Fonseca didn’t have a chance to play regularly with his idol until 1980. Having been in New York City for five years, Fonseca had played with a who’s who of modern jazz legends, so when Salvador’s drummer wasn’t available, the pianist called Fonseca to fill in. Fonseca surprised Salvador by knowing Salvador’s repertoire backwards and forwards, thus cementing a bond that led to years of playing and touring together.

Salvador and Fonseca played regularly during the 1980s in a quartet that also featured saxophonist Dick Oatts and bassist Dennis Irwin. Their collaborations have continued to this day. In 2015, Fonseca’s relationship with Salvador came full circle when he was asked to play Machado’s parts on the 50th anniversary celebration of the Rio 65 Trio recording at Carnegie Hall.

Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador was born from the leader’s love of Salvador and his music and Fonseca’s effort to make a proper tribute to his friend and mentor. The featured trio was born of a 2000 meeting with pianist David Feldman, who was studying then at the New School in New York, and with whom Fonseca recorded with later in 2009 in Brazil, where he also met the trio’s bassist, Guto Wirtti.

In the efforts to make the best recording and present Salvador’s music in the best light, Fonseca reached out to Salvador for lead sheets for his compositions. Feldman also took time to consult Salvador and learn the repertoire from its source, removing any doubts about structural and interpretive nuances. Many of Salvador’s songs seem simple but have difficult elements, most notably in the rhythmic combinations.

Fonseca traveled to Brazil three times: the first to rehearse the music, the second to record over two days, and the third to mix and master. The trio aimed to make the recording as natural as possible, eventually using many first or second takes.

The recording begins with a tune from that inspiring Rio 65 Trio album, “Farjuto,” a breezy composition whose title comes from dated Rio musician slang. ironically meaning “not so good.” The modal of groove of “Transition” is augmented by a variety of rhythms emanating from the Northeastern provinces of Brazil. The haunting “María” is a minimalistic ballad named for Salvador’s wife of 50 years, which the trio molded in the spirit of Keith Jarrett’s memorable take of “It’s Easy To Remember.” The ensemble performs “Antes Da Chuva” in a looser fashion than the Salvador original, while the straight samba of “Samba Do Malandrinho” is bouncy and smart, apropos to its rascally namesake. The sly “Temátrio” is a grooving composition that emerged from Salvador’s second trio around 1966.

The title of “Gafieira” refers to an old Rio tradition of a ballroom dance incorporating some acrobatic elements, the difficult composition prancing along in a brilliant display of melodic and rhythmic complexity. Salvador’s beautiful ballad “Para Elis” is a dedication to the pianist’s former employer, the iconic singer Elis Regina, and finds the trio augmented by the great cellist Jaques Morelenbaum. Performed and recorded as a samba, “Valsa De Esquina” was originally composed as a Brazilian waltz by Salvador, so the trio transformed it into a Bill Evans-esque jazz waltz. The upbeat “Clauditi” is a tribute to a great friend and collaborator, trumpeter Claudio Roditi, and features rhythmic elements of samba and the pre-samba maxixe. Perhaps Salvador’s most famous composition, “Meu Fraco é Café Forte” (or “My Weakness Is Strong Coffee”) utilizes an intriguing arrangement by Wirtti that introduces the melody in half time before speeding it up.

Duduka Da Fonseca and his wonderful trio of David Feldman and Guto Wirtti pay tribute to Brazilian jazz legend Dom Salvador on the enchanting Duduka Da Fonseca Trio Plays Dom Salvador by highlighting the composer’s brilliant music but also giving it new life with new contemporary arrangements.

In 2008, musican/neuroscientist Dave Soldier approached composer/computer-musician Brad Garton with an idea.  Dave had become aware of fairly inexpensive EEG (electroencephalograph) sensors that could measure the electrical output of the brain (“brainwaves”).  Working with these sensors over the past ten years, Brad and Dave developed a set of software tools that could generate music using this brainwave data.

As they worked out the system, they have played concerts at rock festivals (Red Bull Festival), radio stations (WFMU), the New York City Opera, colleges (City College, Cornell University), museums (the Guggenheim and Rubin Museums) and even an hour long PBS TV special produced by WHYY. In addition to concerts at City College and Cornell University, they are probably the only avant garde music act to be invited to perform at the National Institutes of Health, where they were invited by the graduate students.

In shows, typically Dave gives a lecture with slides on the brain’s cortical activity and how it senses and produces rhythm, and Brad explains how the waves recorded from the cortex are translated to music. Then they use their own brainwaves or those of guest musicians to “compose” in real time, generally with the musicians improvising on their instruments. An interesting question is if the music is “composed” if it is not done intentionally: the brain always controls music making, but in this case it can create music even when asleep or unconcious.

The latest version of these tools were used to produce this CD and the software used will soon be freely avaialable. This uses a process of “data sonification”, or the translation of a stream of numbers into musical production
and control.  The raw data is used to trigger and modify synthetic digital musical instruments.

The EEG signal is made by the neural activity detected by the sensors, but does not reveal any high-level concepts or ideas that are being *thought* (although the brain activity responds to sensory inputs like the touch of the drumhead and sound and activates movements, and is modulated by mental states).  Dave and Brad decided to exploit this feature by creating a feedback loop of sorts, with musicians being invited to play along ‘with themselves’,
generating music with brainwaves resulting from the process of generating that music.

For this first complete recording of “The Brainwave Music Project”, four soloists were invited to take part in the sessions. Each plays a solo instrument, and the instruments themselves each come laden with a rich musical tradition.  The hardanger fiddle (Dan Trueman), the solo flute (Margaret Lancaster), the mandolin (Terry Pender) and the trap drums (William Hooker) all represent long social and cultural histories.  This awareness, as well as the awareness of what and how the musicians are playing, is certainly a part of the brainwave data used to build the synthetic accompaniment for each piece.

Gary Smulyan

Originally from Bethpage, New York, Gary Smulyan is a critically acclaimed baritone saxophonist and Jazz educator.  While still in high school, he had the chance to sit in with major jazz artists such as legendary trumpeter Chet Baker, saxophonist Lee Konitz, trombonist Jimmy Knepper and violinist Ray Nance. After graduating high school he attended SUNY-Potsdam and Hofstra University.  It wasn’t long before Gary’s professional career began to take shape in 1978 when he joined Woody Herman’s Young Thundering Herd at the age of 22.  In 1980 he became part of the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra then under the direction of renowned valve-trombonist and jazz guru, Bob Brookmeyer.  Gradually establishing himself the talented Smulyan was asked to share the stage and recording studio with a stunning array of luminaries including: trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dizzy Gillespie, saxophonist Stan Getz, pianist Chick Corea, timbales king Tito Puente, and R&B/Blues and soul icons Ray Charles, B.B. King and Diana Ross.

Smulyan has become a fixed member of the acclaimed Vanguard Jazz Orchestra for over twenty years. He has performed and recorded with the Dave Holland Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band, Carla Bley’s Big Band, the Mingus Big Band, and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.  Among his many accomplishments, Gary is a four-time winner of the prestigious “Down Beat Magazine” Critic’s and Reader’s Poll’s for Baritone Saxophonist of the Year. He is a six-time Grammy award winner for his work with B.B. King, Joe Lovano, Dave Holland and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.  Gary continues his impressive work in music education as a Jazz faculty member at a variety of colleges including the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, SUNY Purchase, and the Manhattan School of Music.

Today Gary has become recognized across-the-board as the major voice on the baritone saxophone. His playing is marked by an aggressive rhythmic sense, an intelligent and creative harmonic approach — and perhaps most importantly – a strong and incisive wit.
These days Smulyan lives in Amherst, Mass., with his wife, pianist and conductor Joan Cornachio. He is a faculty member of Amherst College and serves as the artistic director at the Berkshire Hills Music Academy in South Hadley, Massachusetts, a two year post secondary music school for adults with developmental disabilities.

Matt Hilgenberg
Trumpet player Matt Hilgenberg has been a top call musician in New York City for 20 years.  He has toured with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Bebo Valdes, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Antibalas, and many jazz, rock, Latin, and singer songwriter acts.  He has performed in pits for many Broadway musicals, including Jersey Boys, Fela!, and Movin Out. For 15 years he performed at Birdland every Sunday night with the Chico O’Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra, and appears on three Grammy nominated CDs with the group.  Final Night at Birdland, the band’s last release, won the 2014 Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album.  Hilgenberg also is on staff for the Jazz at Lincoln Center music preparation team, arranging and transcribing musical parts for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra directed by Wynton Marsalis.
In 2000, Matt recorded his first jazz album as a bandleader.  Rasa, on Double Time Records features Frank Kimbrough on piano, Mike Richmond on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums, and highlights many of Matt’s original compositions.  Since then, Matt has also appeared as a sideman in many recordings, ranging from rock groups to Latin Jazz groups and big bands, and many national commercial TV ads.
Matt is currently in his seventh year of teaching band in the Mamaroneck public schools, to roughly 200 students per year.

Bob Arthurs New CD
Trumpeter Bob Arthurs infuses Eastern European melodies with the spirit of jazz on his innovative new CD, Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads

Jazz roots meet Ukrainian folk traditions on an exciting new
release from trumpet master Bob Arthurs

shem.gif
On Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads (Blue Griffin), jazz trumpeter Bob Arthurs and guitarist Steve LaMattina deliver an engaging and excitingly original offering that successfully—and charmingly—melds two genres: jazz and music from Ukraine’s folkloric tradition.

The album is the brainchild of producer Irena Portenko, a long-time fan of trumpeter Bob Arthurs’ playing, composing, and uniquely personal approach to jazz. Irena, an accomplished and acclaimed classical pianist and educator, suggested that Arthurs should record some popular Ukrainian tunes in a jazz style. To get the project rolling, Portenko provided the trumpeter with a list of tunes from the country’s folk tradition along with other works by Ukrainian composers. Bob put his head together with a frequent collaborator, guitarist Steve LaMattina, and the twosome developed the 11 brilliant arrangements displayed here. Not only do their visionary arrangements respect the tunes’ ethnic origins, they also reflect the players’ straight-ahead jazz sensibilities.

Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads gets its name from Irena Portenko’s desire to dedicate the album to three of her favorite dads: her father, her uncle, and her daughter Anastasia’s father, as well as to Ukraine, where Portenko was born.
Album highlights include:

“Blackthorn in Blossom”: The duo displays a delicate touch on this tender traditional tune with a slightly melancholy air.
“Kyiv Waltz”: The lilting trumpet melody soars over a cool, sauntering guitar line.

“Walking Around the Garden”: The arrangement and Bob’s Ukrainian vocal have a longing quality that evokes jazz classics such as “I’m a Fool to Want You.”

“Blues for Ukraine”: A Bob Arthurs original with a great bluesy feel, and heartfelt lyrics offering support and sympathy for the country’s historic travails.

Trumpeter Bob Arthurs has been a regular on the New York and international jazz scene for a half century. He’s gigged at major jazz clubs in the Big Apple with greats including Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Warren Vache, Etta Jones, Carmen Leggio (with whom he co-led a big band) and a host of others. Bob has a particular affinity with guitarists, as evidenced by his collaborations with six-string masters such as Tal Farlow, Larry Coryell, Bucky Pizzarelli, Chuck Wayne, and Steve LaMattina, who appears on Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads, as well as previous Bob Arthurs recordings. Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads is Bob’s fourth release as a leader.

Bob recalls being entranced by the trumpet as a child, and began lessons at age 8; the young trumpeter played his first gig by the time he entered his teens. Bob later studied with Sal Mosca, whom he credits with teaching him the basics of improvising and for inspiring him to pursue his musical goals. The legendary pianist must have been pleased by his student’s progress, as the two went on to make music together for decades. Besides building a reputation as a jazz trumpet player, vocalist, band leader and recording artist, Bob Arthurs is well-regarded as an educator. For more than 30 years, he was on the faculty of the Westchester Conservatory of Music (now known as the Music Conservatory of Westchester), in White Plains, New York. He also was head of the school’s jazz department, as well as dean of students and faculty.

Bob and guitarist Steve LaMattina have been playing together for well over a decade. Steve was also on faculty at the Music Conservatory of Westchester and now has a large private teaching practice. He’s an in-demand sideman in the New York metropolitan area, and has recorded with Ted Brown, Dennis Irwin, Carmen Leggio and others.

Fans of jazz and creative music will be engaged by the innovative and intriguing music on Jazz It Up! Ukrainian Songs for Three Dads, and will no doubt look forward to hearing what Bob Arthurs lends his trumpet and voice to next time around.

By Dan Ouellette, Senior Editor ZEALnyc, March 9, 2018

To illustrate how topsy-turvy the modern music world is today, consider 31-year-old rising-star vocalist Camille Bertault, who will perform for two nights at Jazz Standard, March 20-21. Instead of being discovered by a savvy record company A&R rep or a made-for-YouTube video, in 2015 she serendipitously made her mark by posting on the internet a low-tech video of singing prowess. And it wasn’t just any song or any singsong selfie. It was her vocalese version in French of John Coltrane’s hallmark 1960 tune “Giant Steps”—complete with the speedy scat of the saxophonist’s dazzling solo that has bedeviled many a horn player attempting to emulate the harmonics flash of changes. She used Trane’s original in the clip as the background guidepost.

“I just wrote French lyrics to the melody,” says Bertault in a phone conversation from her home in Paris. “But the important point is that I was just being myself, not expecting anything else. I wasn’t doing this as a promotional strategy but just to share with a friend. I’m not a net geek or addicted to it, and I don’t know much about the technology. Close to zero.”

But, once again in this brave new world of getting your music heard, a star was born in the most extraordinary way, in her case by social media. Bertault sent her impromptu performance to one friend via Facebook, who sent it to another. And before you knew it, the video showed up on Jam of the Week and went viral. In seven days, it had 700,000 views. The hits just kept on coming as word spread of her uncanny, homemade achievement. “It was crazy,” she says. “After three days, I was getting messages from all parts of the world.”

Bertault’s takeaway? “Lots of people who are in the music world are afraid of everything,” she says. “But you don’t have to be. You don’t have to follow, you don’t have to be the same. You can work your own projects.”

Born in Paris, Bertault started early as a pianist at the age of 4, taking classes at the conservatory when she was 8 before her family moved to Nice, in the South of France when she was 14. She continued her classical studies there and returned to Paris to get her degree which was thwarted when she failed the conservatory final exam. She also studied music theory, composition and improvisation in the jazz department. “Yes, that exam was important but it’s just a small detail,” she says with a laugh. “As such, that was just a phase in my life.”

The new stage was to plunge into vocals, putting buoyant new vocalese spins on classics by Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Rowles and Duke Ellington as well as introducing her own witty, whimsical, mesmerizing and lyrical compositions sung in French. She recorded her first album, En Vie, before the internet frenzy, which gave her Sunnyside Records debut a strong push. The New York City-based indie label run by François Zalacain presented her to the American jazz audience in 2016, which has led to international success and being signed by Sony Music France. The head of that label caught her performing at a Paris club and afterwards talked with her. “He asked me what my plans were,” says Bertault. “In fact, at that point, I didn’t know but I wanted to change directions. Yet I hesitated because I wanted to continue with Sunnyside, but then I thought that it was more practical to make the record in France. But I’m still friends with François. He’s a big friend. It’s like my family in New York.”

Pas de Géant album cover; photo: Paul Rousteau.

The result is her sumptuous and effervescent sophomore Sony Music/OKeh recording, Pas de Géant, which translated means “Giant Steps.” “I had been thinking about all the things that have happened in the last year and I wanted to make a tribute to the beginning,” Bertault says, who notes that her live performances have been all over YouTube. “Doing that internet thing was so funny with so much coincidence. It was a crazy story, but everything has been like dominoes. So, I decided to continue to be crazy.”

She celebrates this on “Là Où Tu Vas” (her lyrics with orchestrated “Giant Steps” music by Coltrane) where in the English translation of her humorous French vocal improvisation, she sings, “Giant steps you’ve done when what you give comes from the heart and not from elsewhere…”

On the remarkable new recording, Bertault joyfully scats, sings wordless vocals and artistically explores her own lyrics (all in French, with only one, “Winter in Aspremont,” in poetic English). Highlights include a train-of-thought run through a medley of Ravel compositions (“Arbre Ravéologique,” or as she calls it: “Ravel is my favorite so I see him in my family tree”), more vocalese beauties from Bach (a sparkling short take on his Goldberg Variations) to Bill Evans (“Very Early”), and swinging through French songs such as Jacques Demy/Michel Legrand’s “La Femme Coupée en Morceaux”). Also of note is her tempo-shifting, two-part piece of music “Comptes de Fées” that she says is about phonies who want to “walk with me, but have bad intentions. The tune has two characters: the singer and the producer who lies and tries to catch the singer, but the singer understands.”

Bertault pays homage to Shorter again (her “Casa de Jade” Portuguese-sung take on “House of Jade”). “I’m fond of Wayne’s music,” she says. “His music is like Coltrane’s. There’s something very spiritual in their music. It’s like I’m not here to show off, but it’s really about the music, which is not so common. Melodically they are so perfect, and they have the genius of Thelonious Monk’s very simple melodies.”

As for the dominance of the lyrics in French, Bertault laughs. “English lyrics, sure anything is possible,” she says. “I love writing my lyrics, but I’m not good enough to write in English. I’m working with someone to help me write lyrics correctly in English. But I’ll sing in English as long as it’s artistically logical. But, really, my only rule is to not have rules.”

Stephanie Chou; photo: Emra Islek.

SCENE OF THE UNHEARD: STEPHANIE CHOU

Even though she excelled as a math major at Columbia University, Stephanie Chou had already looked ahead to a saxophone career, having played the alto and soprano since she was 10. The native New Yorker was first playing the western classical saxophone canon and then deepened her pursuit into the city’s competitive improvisational circles. But then she hit upon a novel expression for her sax—and her vocals—by embracing her Chinese heritage and using its musical folk and pop legacy to create a unique blend of traditional Chinese, classical and jazz. She showcased this superbly at Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium on Thursday, March 8 to a full house.

With her exquisite arrangements, she led her quartet, including the standout of the evening string and erhu player Andy Lin (his erhu solo of the classic “Birds Singing in the Empty Mountain” was a sonic treat), on a rousing and lyrical set focused on her impressive album Asymptote. Chou’s English and Mandarin vocals (the latter more strongly delivered) often exquisitely eased into her alto lines delivered emotionally with only a few gusto moments—after all, this was not an instrumental showoff concert. What was so remarkable about Chou’s performance was its tasty diversity of styles, including her cooking gambol through the trad tune “General’s Command,” the calming “Quiet Night Thought” (based on an ancient Tang Dynasty poem by Li Po) and her playful, speeding tongue-twister “Eating Grapes.” At the end of the set, Chou introduced a new piece, “Manchurian Girl,” based on a 1938 Japanese pop tune that was also released in Chinese. The heart-wrenching yet happily playful song is a part of a larger work based on the Chinese comfort women in World War II. Sounds promising.

THREE DOT LOUNGE . . .

If jazz may sometimes be a hard sell, what about poetry mixed with jazz that runs the risk of listeners rushing to the audible exit?…Even so, last year two jazz/poetry connections aroused audiences to refined verse with drummer Matt Wilson honoring Carl Sandberg on Honey and Salt and saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom paying homage to Emily Dickinson on Wild Lines…But in these desperate times, voices in the wilderness beckon us to come to our ethical senses, which usher us into this year’s impressive poetry/jazz trifecta teeming with tune and reflection…Blues for Memo(Motéma Records) where tenor saxophonist/bass clarinetist David Murray, a fierce improvisational blower with a tender soul, creates poignant dreams and incisive critiques with socio-political trenchant poet Saul Williams…The innovative saxophonist Benjamin Boone delivers a special collaboration with one-time U.S. poet laureate and Pulitzer Prize recipient Philip Levin on The Poetry of Jazz (Origin Records) released after the poet’s passing…Experimental jazz wife-and-husband team poet Patricia Nicholson and bassist/ngoni player William Parker improvise a shape-shifting narrative of vision stories on their meditative epic, Hope Cries for Justice (Centering Records).

“a powerfully elegant statement of joy over shared musical discovery…I often imagined Omar Sosa lifted up to the Yoruban spirits in the form of a swarm of butterflies. Such is the beauty of his musical spirit.” – NPR

The celebrated 7-time Grammy-nominated Cuban pianist/composer/bandleader Omar Sosa and Senegalese kora (harp-lute) master/singer Seckou Keita are acclaimed musical adventurers with a rich heritage that spans jazz, Latin and African influences.  They are joined by Sosa’s longtime collaborator, Venezuelan percussion wizard Gustavo Ovalles, who encompasses the polyrhythmic sound of the African diaspora.  They will perform music from their acclaimed album on OTA Records, Transparent Water. Evocative of translucence and flowing light, it is a deeply spiritual recording full of serenity and a gentle elation with music that comes across as an antidote to the world in turmoil. The program at Roulette is part of their first national tour of Transparent Water.

Omar Sosa is one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today.  His musical trajectory traces the diaspora from Cuba to Africa and Brazil, from Central America to Ecuador’s African-descent communities. Born in 1965 in Camagüey, Cuba’s largest inland city, he studied percussion and marimba at the music conservatory in Camagüey, piano at the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Música in Havana, and completed his formal education at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. Among his influences, Omar cites traditional Afro-Cuban music, European classical composers (including Chopin, Bartok, and Satie), Monk, Coltrane, Parker, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Chucho Valdés, and the pioneering Cuban jazz group Irakere. His extensive credits include Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, London’s Barbican and Queen Elizabeth Hall, Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and such festivals as Monterey Jazz, JVC Jazz, Montreal Jazz, Montreux Jazz, WOMAD and Cape Town International Jazz. Nominated seven times for a Grammy and twice for the BBC World Music Awards, Sosa entwines the expressive traditions of Africa and the Americas in a distinctive cosmopolitan voice, articulating a brilliant, joyous, and thoroughly contemporary global jazz idiom and creating a fresh and original urban sound – all with a Latin jazz heart. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, DC in 2003 for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States.

Seckou Keita is one of the most influential kora players of his generation, seated in tradition whilst constantly pushing the boundaries of his art. Growing up in the Casamance area of southern Senegal, he was a child prodigy born of a line of griots (praise singers and oral historians) and kings. He has graced the international stage since 1996, earning worldwide acclaim for his kora playing and appearing with such luminaries as Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour, and Miriam Makeba. His current solo album, 22 Strings, explored what it means to be a modern global citizen, and yet to live with seven centuries of tradition and heritage expressed through music. The album won Best Album in the Africa and Middle East category in SonglinesMusic Awards 2016, and was recently selected as one of Simon Broughton’s Top Ten Kora Albums.

Gustavo Ovalles has worked with leading artists from the worlds of salsa and jazz and shared the folkloric music of his native Venezuela with world musicians.  After studying at the Caracas Conservatory, he turned to percussion and traditional Venezuelan dance, visited Venezuelan villages to find the roots of traditional music, and went to Havana to work with drum masters. He has participated in many jazz festivals, and appeared on prestigious stages from New York to Tokyo. Prior to Transparent Water, he worked on three projects with Omar Sosa: Sentir, Ayaguna, and Eggūn.

Made possible in part with public funding provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State legislature.

Deb Burke’s Interview
With
Gabriele Tranchina

On A Jazzy Blog
The Moon Rises with Gabriele Tranchina

shem.gif
What The Press Is Saying:

“Tranchina is a vocalist with a unique sound. There is the fragility of Stacey Kent and Astrud Gilberto but with the tonal quality of Nadia Basurto.”
– Ian Lomax, Jazz Journal

“Gabriele Tranchina, whose fourth release (and first since 2010), Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes, demonstrates the singer’s firm grasp across styles, genres, and, yes, languages.
The singer’s voice is singular and well balanced, capable of low purrs and assertive exuberance. Refined and fine is Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes.“
▪ Michael Bailey – All about jazz

“Not your typical bossa/Latin set that you can set and forget while you sit back and enjoy it, Tranchina has a way with the special sauce, ladling it out in just the right measure at just the right time. A sassy modern take on a classic vibe, this nicely ear opening set is a tonic of feel good music throughout. Check it out.”
▪ CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest record

“Gabriele Tranchina moves like a fish in the water through different rhythms, with an educated and wonderful voice. She is able to walk through different moods, languages and musical genres. The one based in New York is an explorer by nature and this is printed in each of her songs.”
▪ Luis Felipe VALERO ARISTIZABAL

“Gabriele surprises with her ability to hold steady notes that other singers might artificially push down to make smoky, or force up to sound light. All of Tranchina’s notes sound right and expertly turned. None of the notes sound as though the singer has strained to reach them. In short, she doesn’t make a grating sound.
Tranchina’s work flows easily from one cultural to the next. Each piece of the instrumentation meshes with the other, and none of it overwhelms the singer. That is important; the album remains one of vocal jazz and listeners get a chance to hear who the singer is, as shown through the work.”
▪ Doudie Miller-Gould, Lemonwire

A world artist, a jazz vocalist, a creative interpreter, a heavenly sound, a woman with a unique view of music, the world, and of singing.  This is just a small description of songbird Gabriele Tranchina.  She brings to her music a worldview — using music as a force for wholeness, a source of unity and energy for all.

Setting sail into oceans of music, drawing from the world’s beauty and versatility.

A sailing ship is sure to encounter various adventures in its travels — sunshine, storms, calm waters, and high waves. Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist of broad tastes and distinctive experiences, the amazing Gabriele Tranchina.

Each cut found on Of Sailing Ships and The Stars in Your Eyes (Rainchant Eclectic Records, RER1001, Oct 2017) is a side trip to a new destination. Bossa, Latin, swing, ballads, a 7/4, improv…. sadness, hope, joy, relationships, the future… all are there. We are again reminded of how much music is a true and accurate reflection of life itself. Gabriele sets foot on many shores, singing in 5 languages and a vocalese on the 7/4  “A Song for India”. This CD is a progression of her desire to explore music and rhythms from different cultures.

Gabriele Tranchina, vocalist, is joined on this album by her husband pianist, composer and arranger, Joe Vincent Tranchina, who fills the tunes with unusual textures and shapes, guiding the high-level musicians in the band. His tastes, too, are complex and unexpected and the arrangements add an enormous richness to the overall impact of the individual tunes and the entire album.

The other musicians in the band Carlo De Rosa (bass), Grammy award winning Vince Cherico (drums) and Renato Thoms (percussion) each give a distinctive flavor with their individual specialties, contributing unique aspects to each melody and rhythm. Whenever a group of musicians of this highest level gathers, the music they spontaneously create is impossible to categorize or even capture in words. Only listening will truly reveal what has been sculpted as it arose in each moment.

It’s a cold, rainy Saturday night in Spanish Harlem, but inside Camaradas El Barrio the scene is a fuego! The wine is flowing, the mofongo is tasting good and Fernando García’s sextet is percolating on the bandstand with a fiery abandon that is palpable to the crowd. As they launch into a wild, whirlwind descarga take on the Duke Ellington-Juan Tizol classic “Caravan,” García fuels the clave with his left foot on the cowbell while traversing the kit with polyrhythmic aplomb as pianist Gabriel Chakarji lays down an entrancing montuno. A consummate conductor from the behind kit, García nimbly shifts insinuating rhythms from song to song — chachalokafún to bembé to cuembé to sicá to timba — while never letting the groove slip. Slovenian-born saxophonist Jan Kus adds husky-toned tenor over the top as guitarist Gabriel Vincéns dazzles with single note flurries while conguero/barrilero Victor Pablo stokes the flames. It doesn’t get much hotter than this.
Like a master rhythmatist, García juggles all the intricate polyrhythms, odd meters and quick tempo shifts with assuredness and authority. The Puerto Rico native and New York City resident is fast emerging as a talent deserving of wider recognition for both his remarkable adeptness on the kit and his considerable skills as a composer-arranger. On Guasábara Puerto Rico, García organically blends folkloric bomba rhythms and jazz in a myriad of satisfying ways. Backed by his core group of Kus, Vincéns, Chakarji, Pablo and bassist Dan Martínez, the drummer and his simpatico crew of youngbloods push the envelope on García’s third album as a leader and debut for ZOHO Music.
Special guest Miguel Zenón, the acclaimed saxophonist-composer-bandleader and native of San Juan, elevates the proceedings on the dramatic and turbulent title track. “Miguel is one of my big heroes,” says García. “I’ve been following his music since 2006. His album Esta Plena is a perfect example of mixing the folkloric Puerto Rican music with modern jazz harmony and polyrhythms. So I’ve gotten a lot of influences from him.”
García is following in the footsteps of innovators like Zenón and other Puerto Rican-born musician-composers like David Sánchez, William Cepeda and Edsel Gómez. Growing up in Guaynabo, he absorbed the music of Hector Lavoe, Cortijo, Ismael Rivera, Willie Colón and the Fania All-Stars and was also hugely influenced by El Sonido Nuevo, the classic 1966 collaboration between Cal Tjader and Eddie Palmieri. Meeting master percussionist and folklorist Rafael Maya in Guaynabo exposed him to bomba, the folkloric music of Puerto Rico, in a profound way. “Rafael’s studied a lot of the cultural history of Puerto Rico in the early 1900s,” García explains. “I met him in 2011 when I lived with my parents in Guaynabo and had a recording studio in their garage. Rafael contacted me about recording a bomba CD with his group, Desde Cero, and before I knew it he started bringing all these really famous bomba musicians into my parents’ garage. So I was hanging with these great people who have played those rhythms for their entire life. And it was then that I got hooked on bomba.”
Maya not only taught García the folkloric track “Guaynabo Me Tambor,” a calindá rhythm arranged for the ensemble by García on Guasábara Puerto Rico, he also contributed the beautiful “Se Va” to the album. “Rafael sang those tunes on his iPhone to my voicemail,” García recalls. “That’s how I learned them. ‘Se Va’ actually has lyrics but I did an arrangement as an instrumental where it goes from a yubá rhythm, which has a 12/8 type of feel, and then changes into an accelerated seis corrido rhythm, which gets really intense.”
The time-shifting opener “Audubon,” written in 2014 when García was living on Audubon Avenue in the Washington Heights section of northern Manhattan, makes use of a device by the composer that creates a kind of rhythmic illusion. As he explains, “I was trying to superimpose the four feel on top of a big 3 feel. It flows perfectly with this pattern based in three, played by Victor mimicking batá chachalokafún rhythm on three conga drums. Then there’s this section on the guitar solo where it goes into this Afro-Cuban bembé feel in 3, which actually comes from the 12/8 abakuá rhythm. Finally, it goes into the percussion tradings near the end of the tune. So it’s playing games with the time feel without actually shifting the beat.”
On “Ideas Convergentes,” García skillfully creates a confluence of odd meters — cuembé in 5/4 with an overlying 7/4 with the snare, then a fast seis corrido in 7/4 for the solos and back to cuembé in 5/4 for the barril solo. “It’s like a delta, where the different streams of a river meet before going out to the ocean,” he explains. “It gives a sense to the listener of being in a boat ride and you’re constantly shifting on the tides and the waves. There’s definitely a beat going on but you’re not sure when it all meets. And I think it’s cool that I didn’t solo on that tune because I’m just holding it down in five on the drum kit while Victor on the barril has the liberty on his solo to accelerate or decelerate and not feel that we’re going to lose the groove.”
The title track opens with a dramatic chant feel in the drums. Tenor saxophonist Kus enters, channeling his inner Trane on the meditative vibe before taking off in close conversation with Zenón on the melody. Rhythmically the tune shifts from a yubá in 5/4 to a sicá in 5/4 and finally a holandé in 5/4. Vincéns offers up a cleanly-articulated, fleet-fingered solo along the way that sounds like it’s coming out of the Pat Martino school, and he’s followed in kind by potent solos from pianist Chakarji and alto sax great Zenón. Garcia turns in a crackling solo on this turbulent 9-1/2 minute suite. “The term ‘guasábara’ is from the Taíno language and it means conflict or even in some cases like a battle,’ he explains. “So that’s the drama of this tune.”
The tranquil 7/4 cuembé vehicle “Healing Prayer,” which finds Kus on soprano sax, is the calm after the storm of “Guasábara Puerto Rico.” And while García composed both tunes before the terrible events of September 20, when Maria struck Puerto Rico as a strong Category 4 hurricane, they stand now as a kind of soundtrack to the devastation and recovery of the composer’s homeland. “The first four songs of the album sound like a timeline of what happened in Puerto Rico and what’s happening in the weeks after,” he says. “It’s an amazing coincidence.”
“The Element,” one of García’s newer compositions, is a churning sicá in 3/4 that morphs into a yubá along the way. He says it was inspired by taking composition workshops with Argentinian pianist-composer Guillermo Klein, leader of the group Los Guachos. “Working with Guillermo opened up a new way of thinking, a new way of writing and exploring rhythmic illusions.”
The album closes on an exhilarating note with the Afro-Cuban flavored timba-jazz number “Tiempo,” which has Martínez switching to electric bass and features an incendiary drum solo by García against Pablo’s churning percussive groove at the tag.
Throughout Guasábara Puerto Rico, García has one foot firmly entrenched in the folkloric tradition of bomba while striding confidently into more modernist territory with the other. — Bill Milkowski

Multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Moss, a veteran of New York’s free jazz scene, has assembled a brand-new 22-piece band, the Accidental Orchestra, for Helix, the premiere recording of a pair of his latest extended compositions. Helix kicks o with “The Old One,” which gets its title from Einstein’s name for God. Moss describes this ve-piece suite as “an initiation into sacred ground.” He views it as part of a musical tradition stretching from the earliest ritual over the dead to Bach’s Mass in
B Minor, through Native American rites of passage into the spirit world, the Jewish mourner’s Kaddish, and Buddhist funeral rituals.

Moss wrote See Sharp or Be Flat/C# or Bb while recovering from a fracture su ered in tripping over a curb. The composer brings
a quirky sense of humor to the situation, right down to deciding to name his ensemble the Accidental Orchestra in memory of the incident. Moss aimed to let the band swing on this contrapuntal theme and variations mixing jazz, rhythm and blues, and the joy of dance. “Throughout I refer to Norwegian Wood (The Beatles), I Feel Good (James Brown), and Bags Groove (the Modern Jazz Quar- tet), but do not resort to familiar big band tropes,” Moss explains. “This is a type of string orchestra, but with lots of jazz musicians pushing the boundaries.” The Chicago-born, Madison, Wisconsin-educated Michael Moss has been an active member of the New York jazz scene for 50 years, earning recognition for his skill and imagination as a multi-reed player, and for the freshness and intensity of his writing. The self-described “farthest-out cat” was a mainstay of Manhattan’s famed loft jazz scene, playing with Sam Rivers, Dave Liebman, Paul Bley, Annette Peacock, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Richie Beirach and scores of others. He’s equally at home from a duo setting to an orchestra of 50-plus players. His musical studies have taken him across the globe and through the centu- ries, absorbing the music of Thailand, the Middle East, Ireland, Europe, East Africa, and elsewhere, with Renaissance orchestras, folk melodies, chants, blues, Latin and other styles catching his ear. With Helix, “I am extending an American musical heritage, stretching from Charles Ives, Scott Joplin, Fats Waller, and Louis Armstrong into the future,” Moss says. Listeners can’t help but be captivated by what they hear, as they accompany Moss and the Accidental Orchestra on this life-long journey.

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Diane Moser releases her 7 th CD, Birdsongs, inspired by nature’s most lyrical master improvisers—songbirds. Birdsongs combines virtuoso playing, heartfelt originality, and a unique and personal vibe, resulting in music that is exotic yet accessible, like the aural creations of Moser’s fine feathered friends. This new album is likely to vault the multi-talented pianist from her longtime local-favorite status into the top tier of national voices to be reckoned with in jazz. On Birdsongs , Anton Denner on flute and piccolo, and Ken Filiano on bass join the pianist in a trio setting to present nine songbird-inspired tunes, including seven originals. Over the past decade, Moser has performed Birdsongs at venues across the country with different instrumentation from solo piano to big band, acoustic to electronic, and everything in between. “The reason I decided on this group with Anton and Ken, to record all of my birdsongs, was to give the music a little more space and lightness,” Moser explains. “I also knew that both Anton and Ken would play sonically in those in-between places that is so much like the songs and calls that birds make, not always an exact pitch, but somewhere in between.

What The Press Is Saying About Diane Moser’s Birdsong Trio

Dee Dee McNeil/Jazz Journalist Musicalmemoirs’s Blog March 4, 2018
“..a stunningly original package of music that celebrates birds in a very jazzy way..not only beautiful in sound and structure, but this is extremely relaxing music.”

“Here are three very talented human beings who desire to commemorate birdsongs on their instruments. I find them to be incredibly successful. This is a very beautiful production of original music by Diane Moser, capably interpreted by her stellar piano skills and the two talented musicians who accompany her on bass, flute and piccolo…not only beautiful in sound and structure, but this is extremely relaxing music.”

Dick Metcalf Contemporary Fusion Reviews February 26 2018
Diane’s wonderful piano compositions are supported impeccably by flute/piccolo from Anton Denner and bass by Ken Filiano… & don’t let the “avian” moniker throw you for a loop… this is some of the most beautiful jazz you’ll ever hear… I give Diane and her bandmates a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this splendid album.

Midwest Record February 20, 2018
“Very much in the realm of a Sunday afternoon egghead session, this recital is [a] well conceived round of sitting down jazz that’s a lot fun if you just let it be. Very much a welcome diversion.”

Leonid Auskern, Jazz Quad, February 2, 2018
Diane and her colleagues play chamber music, very refined, beautiful and inspired by the breath of wildlife. This, of course, is jazz, and high-end jazz. But if you are closer to academic music, then I think you will not be disappointed by Birdsongs. The musical impressionism of Diane Moser carries an almost religious feeling of admiration for the beauty and unity of music and nature.

Dodie Miller-Gould, Lemon Wire February 15, 2018
To many listeners, it will call to mind the way some bird species bob from branch to branch. All the while, the birds’ actual songs are replicated with the woodwind, and somehow, the sound of flapping wings appears to have been re-created, too. The song is fun, with listeners trying to match instrument sounds to bird behavior and songs. But the arrangement of sounds never allows audiences to forget that they are, in fact, listening to jazz. Moser [and her band] remind audiences to marvel at nature and enjoy the ways in which jazz can be used to express a variety of aspects of the human experience.
