From subtle to sexy to swinging, Chris Pasin and friends’
shine a brilliant light on the best yuletide favorites

Nothing gets music lovers in a celebrating mood like listening to their favorite carols, and this brand-new CD, Baby, It’s Cold Outside, delivers a whopping dose of holiday cheer. On 11 of the most-beloved sounds of the season, trumpeter Chris Pasin and friends show they have a real gift for making such familiar material their own, while maintaining the spirit and warmth that’s such a major part of the yuletide celebrations.

Equally comfortable on both trumpet and flugelhorn, leader Chris Pasin has proved himself among the most versatile of musicians. Besides fronting his own bands, he’s been a mainstay of ensembles led by the likes of Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin, George Russell, and Brother Jack McDu . Pasin has also appeared with legendary gures including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Ray Charles, to name a few.

For Baby, It’s Cold Outside, Pasin has assembled a stellar ensemble of some of the most in-demand musicians on the New York jazz scene. Among them: pianist Armen Donelian (Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Paquito D’Rivera); bassists Ira Coleman (Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Herbie Hancock) and Rich Syracuse (Mose Allison, Bernard Purdy, Kurt Elling); drummer Je Siegel (Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Sheila Jordan); singer Patricia Dalton Fennell (Dave Holland, Giacomo Gates, Pete Levin); and guitarist Peter Einhorn (Joe Lovano, Placido Domingo, Jim Hall).

Highlights from Baby, It’s Cold Outside include:
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”: Here’s a subtle, sensitive and understated version of a classic that steers clear of the overly sentimental, right from Donelian’s heart-felt piano opener. “We Three Kings”: Uptempo and bursting with energy, the band brings great drive and brilliant feeling to this beloved carol, which features an excellent solo from leader Pasin. “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”: Check out the sexy and playful collaboration between Pasin and vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell. The twosome demonstrate their wit and camaraderie as they work their seductive skills on the lyrics. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”: A very welcome new take on a traditional tune turns it into a cooker; the great rhythmic drive makes it downright danceable. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”: Pasin and Einhorn shine on solos in this unique treatment of a 1940s-vintage hit.

Pasin and friends’ fresh take on the greatest songs of the season celebrate the beloved classics in an original and vastly appealing style. Listeners will enjoy old favorites in a new way this holiday season, thanks to the great renditions performed by this talented and creative ensemble.

Tickets & Info

The Django Reinhardt NY Festival launched in 2000 at Birdland is in it’s 18th year.  Out of the Festival came the top players, The Django Festival Allstars, who tour 2X a year and always spend a week at their home in the US, BIRDLAND.  On the road, to standing ovations, they play top venues –Hollywood Bowl, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Kennedy Center, Montreal Jazz Festival and much more with original music in the style and Django favorites.  This past summer at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Bowl, critic Scott Yanow wrote “highpoint of the entire festival”!

Dad, DORADO SCHMITT, started performing in NY in 2002  when SAMSON was 21 and  AMATI  5, all grown up now and  together on the Birdland stage for the first time. It’s a family dynasty of enormous  talent that comes from the soul of gypsy life where music is God, joined by virtuoso accordionist LUDOVIC BEIER and Grappelli protégé, PIERRE BLANCHARD, on Violin.  They will put you on the edge of your seats with joy,  smiles, shock you with their hot #’s and break your heart with a ballad, joined by gypsy cousin, Francko Mehrstein, on rhythm guitar and Gino Roman on Bass.

The Special guests include the young great saxist Grace Kelly Nov. 7,8, and 11 and top swinging clarinetist Ken Peploski on Nov. 9 and 10 , For a change of pace,  newcomer Chris Smith will be on drums on Nov. 12th

The music harkens back to the 30’s and 40’s in France to the Hot Club Quintette of Django and Grappelli, romantic days in ‘ol Paris with swing music in the dance halls and streets while campfires lit up the sky on the outskirts of Paris with gypsy life.  Music and family  was and still  is King !  Hot Jazz has more than survived, is vibrant and causing a sensation all over the country.

The musicians  will again be  on tour as well (see schedule below) and at their NY home, Birdland Nov. 7-12 before returning home to  Paris and gypsy community Forbach, France,  near Germany.  It’s real, it’s romantic, it’s exciting…let your heart lead the way.  The Festival was co-founded by Maestro Ettore Stratta.

In a diverse music career spanning several decades, keyboardist-arranger-composer Pete Levin has performed and recorded with numerous jazz and pop artists, including Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, David Sanborn, Jaco Pastorius, Robbie Robertson, Joe Louis Walker, Lenny White, Vanessa Williams, Chuck Mangione and John Scofield, receiving critical accolades for his work during a 15-year association with Gil Evans, and his eight-year stint with jazz icon Jimmy Giuffre.

Pete’s ninth solo release, Möbius, was recorded live in the studio in two days, capturing the “no boundaries” spirit of Pete’s tenure with the dynamic Gil Evans Orchestra of the ‘70s and ‘80s. The music explores textural grooves ranging from straight-ahead bop to funk, world-beat, and the experimental.

The disc features 10 tracks including eight originals, and unique treatments of “I Mean You” by Thelonious Monk & Coleman Hawkins, and “There Comes A Time” by Tony Williams. Anchored by Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel’s original bassist) and Lenny White (Chick Corea’s original drummer) the high-energy band and the compositions have the spontaneity and dynamics of a ‘live’ performance.

Levin currently tours with the seven-piece Möbius Band and The Levin Brothers Quartet.

On November 5th, Composers Concordance presents ‘Concertos & Stuff’ featuring the CompCord String Orchestra, conducted by Arkady Leytush. The acclaimed soloists include: violinist Miranda Cuckson, bass trombonist David Taylor, cellist Borislav Strulev, and pianist Steven Beck.

Transcribed and orchestrated by Dave Soldier, ‘The Unfinished Concerto’ by the iconic jazz violinist Stuff Smith will be premiered, with Miranda Cuckson as soloist. The program also includes Gene Pritsker’s ‘Mercy,’ a concerto for cello and Di.J., performed by cellist Borislav Strulev and the composer as Di.J.; Dan Cooper’s ‘Quixotic’ for string orchestra; Joseph Waters’ ‘String Beings II: Demons;’ Mark Kostabi’s piano concerto, ‘Aloft Again,’ performed by the composer; David Taylor’s ‘Dance;’ Daniel Palkowski’s ‘Brief Respite: Serenade for Erhu and Strings,’ featuring Anya Palkowski; Melissa Grey’s ‘to…return’ for string orchestra and trombone, featuring David Morneau; and Dave Soldier’s piano concerto ‘Jaleo,’ performed by Steven Beck. The CompCord String Orchestra includes: Philip Payton – concertmaster, Mioi Takeda, Sarah Franklin, Gregor Kitzis, Kiku Enomoto, Anna Borovik, Adrianne Munden-Dixon, Brian Thompson, Armand Alpyspaev, Andrew Borkowski, and Ratzo Harris.

Staying in rotation for 33 years in NYC is a rare feat. In the case of a new music presenting organization, it requires not only diligence and cognizance of achievements of the past, but also an ethic of keeping one’s ear to the ground for emerging stylistic and technological developments, as well as talented new composers on the scene. Composers Concordance strives to present contemporary music in innovative ways, with an emphasis on thematic programming. It has also created a record label, Composers Concordance Records, with distribution by Naxos. Directors Gene Pritsker and Dan Cooper co-curate the programs, and lead the CompCord Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Big Band. Associate Directors are Milica Paranosic, Peter Jarvis, Svjetlana Bukvich, and Melissa Grey. Composers Concordance’s overriding vision is to promote contemporary music, composers, and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. Good music, performed and recorded well, pushing the boundaries of sound and composition.

“For the past 30 years, Composers Concordance has been a booster for local composers, through both its concerts across the city and a record label.” –The Wall Street Journal. “Enterprising new music organization” –The New York Times. “The Composers Concordance folks are unpredictable and at times refreshingly irreverent in a reverent sort of way….ingenious fun” –Classical-Modern Music Review. “Edgy…boisterous…demanding our attention” San Diego Story. “These men and women are creating exciting music with elements of jazz, world music and many experimental techniques blended with equal parts classical tradition and playing techniques.” Asbury Park Press. “There is considerable evidence to show that Composers Concordance may be one of the most exciting labels in American contemporary music.” -JazzdaGama.

About Borislav Strulev:

Russian-American cellist Borislav Strulev quickly gained a reputation as a musician of exceptional temperament, charismatic personality and virtuoso technique. The great American pianist Byron Janis said of Borislav Strulev: “He plays as if he were to the cello born. His sound, phrasing, coloring and technique already place him in position to follow the Russian tradition of cello playing. Watch this young man, and more importantly, listen to him.” Since his U.S. debut at the Kennedy Center in 1993, Borislav Strulev’s career began to develop rapidly. Audiences at some of the world’s most prestigious venues have been fascinated with a “soloist … with a rich, singing tone” (The New York Times). Borislav Strulev’s 1844 cello, built by Parisian master Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, has been sounded in Сarnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and David Geffen Hall, Merkin Hall – Lincoln Center (New York), Kennedy Center (Washington), Orchestra Hall (Chicago), Kravis Center and Van Wezel Hall (Florida), Auditorio de Madrid and Auditorio de Leon (Spain), Auditorio de Torino (Italy), Musikverein Wien Golden Hall (Vienna), Suntory Hall (Tokyo), Berliner Philharmonie (Berlin), Salle Gaveau (Paris), Tchaikovsky Concert Hall (Moscow), Big and Small Hall of The Moscow Conservatory, the Moscow International House of Music, Big Hall of St-Petersburg Academic Philharmonic named after D.D.Shostakovich, Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall (St. Petersburg).

About Miranda Cuckson:

Violinist Miranda Cuckson is a favorite of audiences for her performances of a range of repertoire and styles, from classical works to the most current creations. Having grown up immersed in the standard repertoire, she has in recent years become one of the most sought-after performers of contemporary music. Downbeat magazine recently stated that she “reaffirms her standing as one of the most sensitive and electric interpreters of new music.” As a soloist and chamber musician, she appears in major concert halls, as well as at universities, galleries and informal spaces. She performs at such venues as the Berlin Philharmonie, Carnegie Hall, Library of Congress, Teatro Colón, Miller Theatre, 92nd St Y, Guggenheim Museum, Bargemusic, Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, BAM, Strathmore, Monday Evening Concerts in LA, Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music series, and the Marlboro, Bard, Lincoln Center, Roaring Hooves, Bridgehampton, Portland, Music Mountain and Bodensee festivals. She made her Carnegie Hall debut playing Piston’s concerto with the American Symphony Orchestra. Miranda is director of Nunc, member of counter)induction, and was an inaugural curator at the cutting-edge venue National Sawdust. She is on the faculty at Mannes School of Music and studied at Juilliard, where she received her doctorate and the Presser Award.

About David Taylor:

Receiving B.S. and M.S. degrees from Juilliard, David Taylor started his playing career as a member of Leopold Stokowski’s American Symphony Orchestra, and by appearing with the New York Philharmonic under Pierre Boulez. Simultaneously, he was a member of the Thad Jones Mel Lewis jazz band, and recorded with groups ranging from Duke Ellington to The Rolling Stones. He has appeared and recorded with major jazz and popular artists including Barbara Streisand, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, and Aretha Franklin. Mr. Taylor has won the NARAS Most Valuable Player Award for five consecutive years, and has also been awarded the NARAS Most Valuable Player Virtuoso Award, an honor accorded no other bass trombonist. He has been a member of the bands of Gil Evans, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, George Russell, Jaco Pastorius, Charles Mingus, Michelle Camillo, Bob Mintzer, Dave Matthews, the Words Within Music Trio, and B3+. In 1998, Taylor performed on four GRAMMY nominated CDs: The J.J. Johnson Big Band, Dave Grusin’s West Side Story, the Joe Henderson Big Band, and the Randy Brecker Band. The latter two CDs were chosen for GRAMMYs. David Taylor is also on the faculties of the MSM and Mannes. He plays Edwards bass trombones exclusively.

About Steven Beck:

American pianist Steven Beck was born in 1978. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School, where his teachers were Seymour Lipkin, Peter Serkin and Bruce Brubaker. Mr. Beck made his debut with the National Symphony Orchestra, and has toured Japan as soloist with the New York Symphonic Ensemble. Other orchestras with which he has appeared include the New Juilliard Ensemble (under David Robertson), Sequitur, the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players, and the Virginia Symphony. Mr. Beck has performed as soloist and chamber musician at the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Miller Theater, Steinway Hall, Tonic, and Barbes, as well as on the New York Philharmonic Ensembles Series and WNYC; summer appearances have been at the Aspen Music Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, the Greenwich Music Festival, the Woodstock Mozart Festival, and the Wellesley Composers’ Conference. His recordings are on the Albany, Bridge, Monument, Mulatta, and Annemarie Classics labels.

About Arkady Leytush:

One of World’s most gifted conductors, Arkady Leytush has directed orchestras in Europe and the United States to great acclaim. Critics have described him as “a conductor in the Grand Russian Tradition” and his dynamic interpretations have made him an audience favorite. Leytush’s artistry is known throughout the former Soviet Union, but it was not until 1994 that he gained recognition in the United States when he, on a week’s notice, made a stunning debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, replacing Yuri Temirkanov. Heliosonic Halloween Show & Grammy Update

Heliosonic Toneways Denied Large Ensemble Grammy Contention

On Eclipse Day, Aug. 21, 2017, ScienSonic Laboratories released Heliosonic Toneways, Vol. 1, a 50th anniversary celebration of The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra. This historic large ensemble recording reunites original participant Marshall Allen (now 94) with the original recording engineer and the astonishing bass marimba that Sun Ra played on the 1965 LP, along with a cast of some of New York’s most creative improvisors. Since we at ScienSonic  Laboratories have been advertising the fact that this unique album was submitted for Large Jazz Ensemble Grammy consideration, we feel that we need to let all of you know what happened.

When Grammy voting opened a few days ago, we discovered that Heliosonic Toneways had been denied entry into the Large Jazz Ensemble category. Instead, it was shunted into the regular Jazz Ensemble category where it is buried among the more than 380 entries (as opposed to about 50 for Large Ensemble).

This came as a surprise to us, considering that the NARAS website specifies a minimum of nine players to qualify for Large Ensemble… and the Heliosonic Tone-Tette consists of ten (with every member playing on every track).

Why was this done? We don’t know… and they aren’t saying. We were told only that the album was “CAREFULLY SCREENED by our committees and their decision is final.” Since the minimum personnel requirement was met, it’s hard not to conclude that the committee reacted unfavorably to the highly unusual nature of this music, as well as its unorthodox instrumentation (bass marimba, timpani, piccolo, theremin etc.), which perhaps did not sound “big band-y” enough to committee ears.

There are no sour grapes here at ScienSonic Laboratories! We did not expect any award… only the right to compete with the other large ensembles, some of which are in fact smaller than the Tone-Tette. Any NARAS voters who are so inclined can still find Heliosonic Toneways, with some effort, among the 380-plus Jazz Ensemble entries. Better yet, forget about the Grammies and show your support by picking up a copy – and perhaps becoming a Laboratory Member! – at www.sciensonic.net

Pursuing a chance at a Large Ensemble Grammy nomination has been a distraction (and an expense). We will now return our efforts to bringing you our highly imaginative projects, music that doesn’t fit into the neat little boxes: our “Worlds of Tomorrow Through Sound.” Many thanks to our loyal and adventurous listeners. They don’t fit into the little boxes either!

Scott Robinson and the Heliotones to debut at NYC’s Jazz Standard on Tues. Oct. 31, 2017: a Halloween Spectacular!

The Jazz Standard – one of NYC’s most important and prestigious clubs – has asked us to present a special Halloween show featuring a sextet of musicians drawn mainly from the new Heliosonic Toneways album. Besides Robinson on tenor/bass/slide saxophones and theremin – and the actual bass marimba played by Sun Ra – the group will include trumpeter Philip Harper, pianist/organist Gary Versace, trombonist Frank Lacy, bassist Pat O’Leary and drummer Matt Wilson.

The music will combine daring improvisations with fun and swinging Sun Ra tunes, and will be a visual and aural treat. There will be a costume contest, with prizes! Big fun.
Robinson’s last foray as leader at the Standard garnered a multi-photo spread in The New York Times, calling it “an impressive workout… negotiated with staggering agility,” noting that the show “suggested both the spooky theatricality of a Halloween special and the vintage futurism of the Sun Ra Arkestra.” And it wasn’t even Halloween! This year’s actual Halloween appearance will embody those worlds, and many more. We hope to see you there.

Purdie moved to New York in 1960 after finishing high school and played with (among others), Lonnie Youngblood before landing his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970 – the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has been a regular guest in the studios of the stars of Jazz, Soul, and Rock, working together with Paul Butterfield as well as Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums under his own name.

Liner Notes from Purdie “Soul To Jazz.” 3-96. With Brecker Brothers, ACT Music & Vision GMBH.

DAVID HANEY studied composition for six years with Czech composer, Tomas Svoboda. After several years of working with the Society of Oregon Composers, Haney began applying  his skills as a working jazz artist, often paired up with some of the greatest minds in jazz improvisation, such featured artists as Andrew Cyrille, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Bud Shank, Bernard Purdie, Buell Neidlinger, Julian Priester, Han Bennink, Obo Addy, Wilbert de Joode, Gerry Hemingway, Wolter Weirbos, Perry Robinson, and Johannes Bauer. Haney has recorded 14 albums in ten years for C.I.M.P. Records and Cadence Jazz Records. David has also collaborated on 14 albums on other labels worldwide. He has received grants and commissions for his creative work from the U.S. State Department; Alberta Film Works; and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Haney was awarded a travel grant from the U.S. State Department to present the music of composer Herbie Nichols in concerts throughout Argentina and Chile. Haney’s piano/trombone work Ota Benga of the Batwa was included in the critics pick for best Jazz Album of 2007 (Coda Magazine). “Conspiracy a go go” and “Clandestine” were both selected Top Ten Jazz Albums of 2009 (Cadence Magazine). David’s current release “Solo” received top ten honors in 2014 (Cadence Magazine). The Penguin Guide to Jazzhas a half page entry on several David Haney albums.

ADAM LANE

By combining a disparate set of influences into a unique improvisational voice, Adam Lane has become recognized as one of the most original creative voices in contemporary jazz. His 2006 recording New Magical Kingdom, was recently featured in the Penguin Jazz Guide 1001 Best Records Ever Made, and his most recent recording, Ashcan Ranting received a myriad of critical praise including four stars in Downbeat.

“Lane’s music is genuine, accessible, fun. The music is deeply in touch with the essential pleasures of earwig-worthy tunes, fat bluesy grooves, and sheer tonal beauty.” (Downbeat Jan 2011)

“Haney tells these tales with the dramatic flair of a Garrison Keillor..” –  Cadence Magazine

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.” Cadence Magazine

I’m very happy to have worked with Dave Haney. That’s number one. Dave did a thing for me. He actually brought me back to creativity. Just doing things wild – I mean all of the unexpected stuff that you can possibly think of. And it got me thinking: wow, I haven’t done this in 30-35 years!” – Interview with Bernard Purdie, Oregon Music News

“Mr. Haney is a pianist drawn to experimental settings, and he creates a promising one here.”  The New York Times

Multi-Grammy nominated
BOBBY SANABRIA MULTIVERSE BIG BAND
WEST SIDE STORY REVISITED
A 60th Anniversary Tribute

A NEW Latin jazz treatment of this timeless masterwork!!!
Live recording for new CD!

DIZZY’S CLUB COCA-COLA
November 17, 18, 19
Tickets & Info

On November 17,18,19, history will be made as the mutli-Grammy nominated BOBBY SANABRIA MULTIVERSE BIG BAND pays tribute to the Broadway show that redefined the American musical, West Side Story, reimagined with an all new instrumental Latin jazz score.

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but re-set to the turbulent gang culture of 1950s New York City, West Side Story broke every rule in the book.

“They said there’s nothing in it anybody can sing. It’s too depressing, it’s too advanced, it’s too crazy, there are too many tritones, there are too many words in the lyrics—nobody can remember them. It’s too rangy.” –Leonard Bernstein

But after initial setbacks, like the producer pulling out just before the start of rehearsals, the show that almost never came to the stage premiered on September 26, 1957 at New York’s Winter Garden Theater to tumultuous applause and critical acclaim. Its amazing combination of progressive jazz oriented music, lyricism, emotional impact, and amazing choreography, showcasing dance movement that had never been seen before on the Broadway stage, gave birth to the triple threat in musical theatre—performers who could sing, dance and act.

Now virtuoso drummer, percussionist composer, arranger, bandleader, Bobby Sanabria brings his critically acclaimed 21 piece Multiverse Big band to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola November 17, 18. 19 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this masterwork with an all new Latin jazz treatment of Maestro Bernstein’s original score. This exciting reimagining showcases the internal kinetic energy of the music with exciting arrangements featuring various rhythms from Latin America.

Bobby Sanabria states, “Maestro Bernstein’s genius of utilizing the tritone (the opening whistle), the interval of modern jazz harmony, set the stage for something that had never been heard on the Broadway stage. Several Latin music genres were also used in the show. But in this new updated version, the full palette of jazz and Latin American styles will be featured—from Venezuelan joropo, Puerto Rican bomba and plena, Dominican merengue, Brazilian samba and samba cansao, Cuban mambo, cha-cha-cha, bolero, son montuno, West African rooted bembé, and American funk and swing—providing the musicians an explosive platform as jazz soloists.”

In addition the closing evening of November 19 will be live streamed and recorded for Bobby’s upcoming CD release on the Jazzheads label.

ABOUT BOBBY SANABRIA
Seven-time Grammy nominee as a leader, drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, educator, documentary film producer, multicultural warrior, and activist, Bobby Sanabria is a native Nuyorican born and raised in New York’s South Bronx. His unique perspective comes from having performed and/or recorded with every major figure in the development of what today is known as Latin jazz. From the genre’s acknowledged creator, maestro Mario Bauzá, for whom Bobby recorded three Grammy-nominated CDs and worked as the drummer in his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra for ten years, to Mongo Santamaria, with whom he started his career, to Tito Puente, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Larry Harlow, Candido, Dizzy Gillespie, Marco Rizo, and many more. Mr. Sanabria’s versatility and scope of musical influence as both a drummer and percussionist has extended to other forms of music. He has worked with such genre-bending artists as composers David Amram, Henry Threadgill, and poet Sekou Sundiata, as well as being named as the newest member of Max Roach’s legendary percussion ensemble, M’Boom.

A noted educator and clinician, Bobby Sanabria is on the faculty of Manhattan School of Music and of the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program at the New School and directs both schools’ Afro-Cuban jazz orchestras. In 2000 Maestro Sanabria’s groundbreaking Grammy-nominated CD Live & In Clave!!! was hailed by the jazz press worldwide for its futuristic take on the big band Latin jazz tradition. Grammy nominations followed for his Big Band Urban Folktales (2008) and, with the MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Kenya Revisited Live!!! (2009), a tribute and re-working of the Machito Afro-Cubans’ legendary Kenya album, and Tito Puente: Masterworks Live!!! (2011). He has worked as a producer, advisor, and on-air personality on the award-winning documentaries The Palladium Where Mambo Was King (Bravo, 2003), From Mambo to Hip Hop (PBS, 2007), Latin Music U.S.A. (PBS, 2009), and I Like It Like That: The Story of Latin Boogaloo (2015). He is the Co-Artistic Director/Curator of the Bronx Music Heritage Center and the Artistic Director/Artist in Residence of the Roberto Ocasio Memorial Latin Jazz Camp for High School Students in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 2006 Bobby was honored by his hometown, Da’ Bronx, by being inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame and having a streetnamed after him on the Grand Concourse. The readers of DRUM! magazine named him Percussionist of the Year in 2006 and the Jazz Journalists Association honored him as Percussionist of the Year in 2011 and 2013. In 2012, his CD Multiverse, on the Jazzheads label, again featuring his 19-piece big band, received two Grammy nominations. In 2013 Mr. Sanabria was honored by Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and the Dream Big Foundation for his community activism, leadership, and work in the South Bronx with children. His most recent recording, Que Viva Harlem! (2015), featuring the MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, has been critically acclaimed by the jazz cognoscenti, receiving 4 1/2  stars from Downbeat magazine. He recently composed the music for Some Girls, a film by noted indie documentary filmmakers Henry Chalfant and Raquel Cepeda. Along with noted folklorist/cultural anthropologist Elena Martinez, Mr. Sanabria is currently the Co-Artistic Director of the Bronx Music Heritage Center. He is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1979. He proudly endorses TAMA Drums, Latin Percussion Inc., Vic Firth Sticks, Sabian Cymbals, and Remo Drumheads.

The Artists:

JULIAN LAGE & CHRIS ELDRIDGE

On Mount Royal, their 2017 release on Free Dirt Records, Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge craft songs that sound familiar but are never easily classified. Percolating with tinges of bluegrass and folk, insinuations of jazz and pop, hints of classical and avant garde composition, the album rarely settles into any one particular category; rather, it dances around the territory between genres, never announcing its innovations and prizing soulfulness above chops at every turn. From first note to last, the duo push themselves to find new ways to play their vintage flat-top steel-string acoustic Martin guitars together.

The Grammy-nominated Lage has been highly regarded in jazz and new music circles for his own work as well as for his collaborations with such artists as Nels Cline, Fred Hersch, Gary Burton, and Jim Hall, to name a few. Fellow Grammy-nominee Eldridge, an Oberlin Conservatory grad who studied with bluegrass guitar legend Tony Rice, is equally noted in the progressive bluegrass world for his stints with The Seldom Scene and The Infamous Stringdusters, which led to his joining Chris Thile’s adventurous quintet, Punch Brothers.

When they play together, however, they do not represent the genres or styles with which they have long been identified. “It’s not like I’m the jazz representative and he’s the bluegrass representative. We could care less about that,” says Lage. Instead, they make music simply as friends and individuals who happen to have unique ideas and techniques. “Playing with Jules, it feels like anything is possible,” says Eldridge. “You have no constraints. There’s just so much room to move around… which really opens you up to being more creative.” Adds Lage: “Our rapport is based on the idea that we’re researchers studying this idea of what two acoustic guitars can do together, how you can integrate that into instrumental songwriting and how you can reconcile that with vocal music. Our collaboration is like a big research project that’s been going on for years.”

SIMON SHAHEEN TRIO

Simon Shaheen dazzles his listeners as he deftly leaps from traditional Arabic sounds to jazz, Flamenco and Western classical styles. His soaring technique, melodic ingenuity and unparalleled grace have earned him international acclaim as a virtuoso on the ‘oud and violin. A professor of music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Shaheen is one of the most significant Arab musicians, performers and composers of his generation.

A Palestinian, Shaheen began playing the ‘oud at the age of four, and a year later studying violin at the Conservatory for Western Classical Music in Haifa. After graduating from the Academy of Music in Jerusalem in 1978, Shaheen moved to New York City to complete graduate studies in performance at the Manhattan School of Music, and later in music education and musicology at Columbia University. In 1982, Shaheen formed the Near Eastern Music Ensemble in New York. In the 1990s, he released four albums of his own while also contributing cuts to producer Bill Laswell’s fusion collective, Hallucination Engine. Leading his group, Qantara, the album Blue Flame (2001) was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards. Shaheen has collaborated in performances and recordings with Sting, Carlos Santana, Quincy Jones, Al Dimeola, David Brubeck, Mohammad Abdul Wahhab, Bill Laswell, Jeff Beck, Angelique Kidjo, Cheb Khalid, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, and others.

Since 1994, Shaheen has produced the Annual Arab Festival of Arts held in New York at the Brooklyn Museum and Town Hall. He founded the Annual Arabic Music Retreat, held each summer at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, in 1997. In Palestine, Shaheen conducts annual music workshops and residencies at major art institutions. Recipient of countless international awards and honors, including a National Heritage Award at the White House (1994), Shaheen most recently received an Honorary Doctorate from the American University of Beirut.

Simon Shaheen will be accompanied by Tareq Rantisi, a world-renowned percussionist, and Firas Zreik on the Arabic qanun, an 80-string plucked lap zither.

WOODY MANN

Among guitarists and critics, Woody Mann is considered a modern master. While the blues are his touchstone, he seems to draw inspiration from every direction with ease and grace. Mann has pursued a rich and diverse career, performing everywhere from the orchestra pits of Broadway to stages worldwide, recorded extensively and schooled countless guitarists through his many books and DVDs, including “The Art of Acoustic Blues Guitar” DVD series, “The Complete Acoustic Blues Guitar Method”, and his latest DVD, “Take Command of Your Fretboard” for Homespun Tapes. From his first solo recording, “Stairwell Serenade”, Woody has since recorded as a soloist and in collaboration with Son House, John Fahey and John Cephas. His latest CD’s are “Tribute to the Reverend” and “Conversations” with saxophonist Charley Krachy.

A noted authority on Country blues music, Woody has taught at major guitar workshops in the USA and Europe, been a faculty member at the New School in NYC, and founded International Guitar Seminars. Presently, Mann is a visiting artist at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. His latest book, “Just Play” combines history and stories of great artists Woody has known and worked with, including his early mentors Reverend Gary Davis and jazz great Lennie Tristano, jazz guitarist Attila Zoller, Portuguese composer Carlos Paredes, and master guitar builders Jimmy D’Aquisto and John Monteleone. As a producer and filmmaker his most recent project includes the award-winning feature documentary, “Harlem Street Singer”, the story of the legendary guitarist Reverend Gary Davis. Throughout his career, Woody has not forgotten those early lessons in the Rev. Davis’ living room or the jazz traditions that were his wellspring. He has become one of the world’s renowned guitar masters – bringing the past up to the present – with his own contemporary improvisational style.

Record producer, jazz writer and broadcaster Bob Porter discusses his new book Soul Jazz: Jazz in the Black Community, 1945-1975, which complies a history of jazz in the back community in the period from the end of World War II until the end of the Vietnam War.

Soul Jazz is a history of jazz and its reception in the black community in the period from the end of World War II until the end of the Vietnam War. Previous histories reflect the perspective of an integrated America, yet the United States was a segregated country in 1945. The black audience had a very different take on the music and that is the perception explored in Soul Jazz.

“The gorgeous piano trio heard here has been together since they formed in 1996 at the University of Southern California’s music school. Even in a world of younger jazz pianists that includes the great Brad Mehldau, Reitan would clearly now be a standout. And his trio with bassist Jack Daro and drummer Dean Koba is unusually fine, especially when you consider the truly exalted taste with which the whole disc was programmed…Reitan is a pianist who can, when necessary, gobble up the keyboard at racehorse tempo, but he is, at heart, a lyric player writing tender waltzes like “Spring” and playing some of the most heart-rending music in the jazz pianist’s repertoire (“I Loves You Porgy”) as well as some that is among the artfully adaptable uptempo “standards” in any band book (“Stella By Starlight.”) A delicious jazz piano trio.”

– Jeff Simon –The Buffalo News, NY

“Defining Reitan’s piano style isn’t easy because he’s not easily boxed in. That said, he’s most at home with light-touch, fleet-fingered runs on the uptempo numbers (Keith Jarrett’s “The Mourning of a Star,” Chick Corea’s “Windows”) and broad, elegiac statements on the ballads (Horace Silver’s “Lonely Woman,” Reitan’s own “Solitude”)…The Reitan-penned title track, intro’d by the pianist alone, graceful and sure, is transformed midway through into a frolicsome and gregarious chase scene. Greg Reitan, it would certainly appear by now, is firmly committed both to honoring the piano trio tradition and ensuring that it doesn’t get stuck in a rut.”

– Jeff Tamarkin — JazzTimes Magazine

“Los Angeles-based pianist/composer Greg Reitan’s Some Other Time (Sunnyside Records) vied for the honors of “Debut of the Year” in 2009. Using his same trio—with bassist Jack Daro and drummer Dean Koba—Reitan followed up that auspicious start with two more outstanding sets, Antibes (2010) and Daybreak (2011), both for the Sunnyside label.  With this same trio—they have been together since 1996—he has honed an elegant and polished sound…the light touch, subtle dynamics, translucent harmonic beauty. Post No Bills builds on that approach, with a bit more of an edge this time around…”

Richard will be playing a highly original program of works in his unique style, representing his extensive background in both jazz/Brazilian and classical traditions. He’ll premiere his new work, “Dança de Roda”, a tone poem depicting visual scenes of Brazil’s 18th century slave culture. In “Trilogy for the Survivors” (of Hurricane Katrina), he has combined contemporary bossa nova rhythms with the classical prelude and fugue form. He’ll also be presenting the first live performances of his eclectic work, “Calling Jobim”, based on the format of the late composer’s very popular song, “Dindi”, and Brazilian composer Carlos Galvaõ’s “Voô Noturno” (Night Flight). He’ll include his own arrangements of music by several of his favorite Brazilian composers, including close longtime friend, the late Amazônian composer, Thiago de Mello – a familiar voice to Warwick audiences.

Being a long time educator, Richard will offer off the cuff background tales and relatable descriptions of how the music is put together.

Starting time is 8 PM, and admission is a suggested donation of $15.

The Kawai baby grand piano is graciously provided by adamspiano.com of New Paltz, New York.

The String Trio of New York on Friday, October 20th 7:30pm Morrison Hall Mansion Middletown, NY campus of SUNY Orange

The String Trio of New York on Friday, October 20th 7:30pm Morrison Hall Mansion Middletown, NY campus of SUNY Orange

October 19, 2017

To: Listings/Critics/Features
From: Jazz Promo Services
www.jazzpromoservices.com

Three-time NYFA Fellow, James Emery, will play in concert with the ensemble that he co-founded, the String Trio of New York on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 7:30pm. The performance will take place in the Grand Hall of Morrison Hall Mansion on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. This event is another in the series on both campuses recognizing New York Foundation of the Arts thirty years of honoring artists.
The Mid-Hudson is the first region of SUNY colleges and universities to schedule events.

The String Trio of New York is the main vehicle through which Emery plays his compositions for which he was awarded New York Foundation of the Arts grants and fellowships. James Emery plays his handcrafted guitar eloquently and with “staggering technical virtuosity,” as quoted in All About Jazz.  He has been acclaimed as “one of the world’s finest guitarists as [he] possesses an encyclopedic jazz vocabulary as a technician and composer.” In addition, Emery has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Cary Trust. As a composer, he writes pieces for chamber groups, jazz ensembles, solo guitar, chamber orchestra, and symphony orchestra. In addition to working with many private students, Emery is an adjunct who teaches the jazz ensemble at SUNY Orange.

Violinist Rob Thomas, who is a Berklee College of Music (Boston) professor, is a highly regarded jazz multi-instrumentalist, fluent on violin, cello, and bass. He has held the violin chair of the String Trio of New York since 2001. JazzTimes calls him “a violinist of exceptional creative resources… riveting as a solo voice with a rich complex tone.”

Bassist Tony Marino tours internationally with the Dave Liebman Big Band. His versatility and wide range of musicality has afforded him opportunities to accompany and record with numerous artists from folk to pop. He is a gifted player who plays both acoustic and electric bass.

In addition, the three musicians will give a master class — The String’s the Thing
the same day, October 20 at 11am in Orange Hall Room 23. This session is free and open to the public, and gives attendees time to ask questions and listen to each musician explain and demonstrate his instrument. Orange Hall is located at 24 Grandview Avenue, Middletown.

Tickets to the concert will be available at the door only the evening of the performance.  The Box Office table and exterior doors open at 6:45 PM. Admission: $15 adults;
$10 senior citizens, faculty, staff, alumni; free for all students.

Morrison Hall Mansion is located at 115 South St on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. Free parking is available across the street.
