At only 10 years old, Frank was heard by Chicago jazzmaster Von Freeman, who introduced him to Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Betty Carter, Eddie Harris, and Johnny Griffin. Frank’s informal education came from sitting in with these and other jazz legends. While attending DePaul University, then 18-year-old Catalano was signed to Delmark Records and began touring and recording with the likes of Randy Brecker, Charles Earland, Louie Bellson, and Tony Bennett. Frank has enjoyed non-jazz success recording and performing with diverse artists including Seal, Beyoncé, John Legend, and Les Claypool. Catalano is also the patented inventor of a sax/keyboard system for EDM music and the Celebrity Influencer for Drambuie Scotch liqueur. In 2017, Hal Leonard Publishing released Frank’s saxophone method book Modern Saxophone Techniques. When not on the road, Frank splits his time between Chicago and Manhattan where he maintains homes.

At age 23, Veronica Swift is now being recognized around the country as one of the top young jazz singers on the scene.

In the fall of 2015, she won second place at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition.  In 2016 she was asked to perform a concert of her own at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York City and she was a guest artist with Michael Feinstein at Jazz at Lincoln Center with the Tedd Firth Big Band and Marilyn Maye and Freda Payne.   Veronica’s first appearance at Jazz at Lincoln Center was at age 11 when she performed at the “Women in Jazz” series at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

In the summer of 2016 she headlined at the Telluride Jazz Festival, her 10th appearance there – but her first as a headliner.  She first appeared there at age 10 with Dave Adams’ Young Razzcals Jazz Project and the great saxophonist Richie Cole and later she sang a duet with the featured artist, Paquito d’Rivera.

Veronica finished her undergraduate degree (BM in Jazz Voice) at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami in December 2016, where she was a full scholarship student.  It was after that that she moved to New York City, where she was almost immediately started performing every Saturday night at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club, a gig she continues to maintain when she isn’t on the road.

Veronica has been on tour with her parents, renowned jazz pianist Hod O’Brien and celebrated jazz singer and educator/author Stephanie Nakasian.  She has appeared on stage with Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, Esperanza Spalding, Joe Lovano, Bob Dorough, Kim Nazarian, Danilo Perez, and others.  With her family she has appeared at Blues Alley Jazz Club in DC, the Jazz Standard in NYC, the Jazz Cruise, and for the New Jersey and Hilton Head Jazz Societies.

She has appeared at SF Performing Arts Center, Rochester Jazz Festival and tours regularly with Grammy Winner/Trumpeter Chris Botti including special guest appearances on his entire upcoming Blue Note engagement for 5 weeks from mid-December to January.

Veronica recorded two CDs as a child – one at age 9 with Richie Cole and her father’s rhythm section and her mother, and one at age 13 with saxophonist Harry Allen.

Her 2015 Album “Lonely Woman” features some of the hottest young jazz players on the scene including Emmet Cohen, Benny Bennack III, Daryl Johns (with whom she shared the Grammy Choir/Band experience), Matt Wigler, and Scott Lowrie.

In addition to performing the Great American Songbook and Bebop and Vocalese classics, Veronica is also a passionate devotee of 20s and 30s music and has sung with Vince Giordano, Terry Waldo, and Drew Nugent.

Veronica recently returned from opening the Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Club Dizzy’s in Shanghai, China and also recently sang the National Anthem at Madison Square Garden for the NY Rangers.

Her next album is scheduled for a 2018 release and will feature the great pianist Benny Green and his trio.

On September 6, 1987, tango grand-maestro Astor Piazzolla gave a concert at the peak of his career in New York City’s Central Park, resulting in what many critics consider to be the definitive live recording of Piazzolla with his ensemble. That ensemble included Pablo Ziegler, the Argentine pianist and composer who helped shape the modern tango. Now Ziegler and acclaimed violinist Lara St. John offer a special concert program that celebrates Piazzolla’s famous Central Park Concert.

The program recreates most of the original Central Park program, which includes many of the late Argentine composer’s most beloved works, as well as exquisite compositions by Ziegler. The line-up features the same instrumentation as Piazzolla’s iconic New Tango Quintet, including Ziegler, who played in Piazzolla’s quintet for more than a decade.

Ziegler and St. John debuted this program at Central Park’s Naumburg Orchestral Concerts series in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Piazzolla’s Central Park Concert. The 2012 concert drew the largest crowd in the series’ 107 years. Ziegler and St. John have since toured the program to the University of Georgia in Athens, the University of Colorado in Boulder, and the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale.  Writes New York Music Daily about the Naumburg concert: “They dug deeply into the material right from the start, with a brightly glimmering, hard-hitting version of ‘Michaelangelo’, then played up the jazz and ragtime aspects of ‘Muerte Del Angel’, then brought the lights down with the dirge ‘Introduccion Del Angel’, bandoneon and violin sailing over the murk below. […] The audience responded thunderously.”

Hot after recording their new album “A Burgeoning Consciousness” this remarkable genre-defying sextet will perform an intimate and memorable concert at Brooklyn’s ShapeShifter Lab

NOSHIR MODY ENSEMBLE

Featuring: Noshir Mody (guitar), Mike Mullan (alto/tenor saxophone), Ben Hankle (trumpet/flugelhorn), Campbell Charshee (piano), John Lenis (bass), Yutaka Uchida (drums)

Noshir Mody is a stimulating and creative fusion guitarist displaying a beautiful tone, versatility, and inventive ideas on his picturesque originals. Throughout his career, Mody has recorded consistently rewarding and thought-provoking sets of original music. His last album Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately features five of his sophisticated compositions performed by a top notch quintet and has been nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album in the 14th Annual Independent Music Awards. Noshir Mody also received the GASC Outstanding Achievement In Songwriting Award for his composition “India” (album: Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately), in the instrumental category.

Mody’s ensembles deliver ethnic melodies delicately woven on jazz-rock structures. The music is served with a blend of virtuosity, creativity and inspiration and the experience carries listeners through a range of fiery passion and smoldering subtleties.

“Jorge Chicoy is a Cuban legend, as vital on the guitar as Chucho Valdez on the piano or Cachao on the bass. His style is both modern and classic, but most of all, it is dazzling.”

CARL GOLDFARB MEMORIAL CELEBRATION Greenwich House Music School
46 Barrow Street, NYC

Wednesday, November 15, 2017 7:30 pm

A public memorial celebrating the life of Carl Goldfarb will be held at Greenwich House in the West Village on Wednesday, November 15. A beloved member of the jazz community for many decades, Carl died peacefully in his sleep on September 11. Carl was a passionate jazz fan who worked as a volunteer for Greenwich House, Arts for Arts, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and other jazz organizations. He was a friend and supporter of many musicians, some of whom will perform at Greenwich House.

Born in Peabody, Massachusetts, Carl did undergraduate studies at New York University in the late 1960s, where his passion for jazz was stirred by a course in jazz appreciation (while preparing for his final exam he tested his roommates’ patience by loudly playing a recording John Coltrane’s Ascensions six times in a row). Carl subsequently studied bass with Jimmy Garrison and also took sax lessons from Clifford Jordan. Besides jazz, his other passions included sports, literature, foreign films, cannabis, and fine wine (he was an expert oenophile).

In the early 1970s, Carl pursued graduate studies under renowned historian George Dangerfield at UCLA Santa Barbara. Although he graduated with a Master’s Degree in American History, he spent most of his professional life working as an accountant. A resident of the Lower East Side since the mid-1970s, Carl was also a community activist who fought against gentrification and the proliferation of noisy bars and clubs on his Orchard Street block.

Carl Goldfarb was a valued and beloved member of his community, and will be missed by his many friends and the countless musicians he followed and supported over the years.

A Sleepin’ Bee uses Wilson’s iconic collaborations with Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing as the starting point for a unique take on the tribute album

“Every single song in this collection hits a sweet spot of a different sort, but the most pleasing aspect of the recording is how it uncovers the stripped-down, soulful side of Kinhan’s voice.” – Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“Echoes of the artist in her own voice, that’s what so lovingly resounds in the voice of Lauren Kinhan on A Sleepin’ Bee, her tribute to Nancy Wilson.” – Michael Bourne, WBGO

“Her approach to the material is anything but conventional; with her big, flexible voice, Kinhan brings the passion of a soul singer to the improvisatory reach of a jazz diva.” – Suzanne Lorge, New York City Jazz Record

“Her luscious, velvet voice is a good place to rest your weary head.” – Ken Blanchard, Jazznote SD “A vocal tour de force” – Jazz Journal, Sally Evans-Darby

“Lauren Kinhan is a tremendously gifted jazz singer.” – Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

Whether on her own highly-acclaimed albums, as a 25-year member of the beloved vocal group New York Voices, or as co-founder of two diverse and inventive supergroups, Moss and JaLaLa, singer/songwriter Lauren Kinhan has always forged her own path as a performer, composer and improviser. With her latest, A Sleepin’ Bee (due out October 6 on her own Dotted i Records), Kinhan once again steers herself in unexpected directions with a new release that is at once the first all-standards collection of her career, a loving tribute to legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson, and unmistakably a Lauren Kinhan album – with all the unique perspective and idiosyncratic personality that has come to imply.

If the sudden appearance of an album’s worth of standards in a catalogue dominated by original songs comes as a surprise, the process of its creation is just as atypical. While Kinhan spent much of 2016 conceiving, rehearsing and workshopping the project, the circumstances of the recording arose suddenly through the auspices of her alma mater, Berklee College of Music. The session suddenly became an educational opportunity as well as a record date, providing a small group of Berklee students the invaluable privilege of observing and engaging in a recording session at the highest level.

First and foremost, though, A Sleepin’ Bee is a celebration of Nancy Wilson on the occasion of the genre- hopping singer’s 80th birthday. While Kinhan shares Wilson’s penchant for blurring stylistic boundaries, her choice of material focuses on Wilson’s early jazz albums, particularly her collaborations with Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing. Those recordings proved to be a jumping-off point for Kinhan, who utterly transforms these classic and obscure numbers with the help of pianist/creative partner Andy Ezrin and veteran producer Elliot Scheiner as well as a stellar band featuring bassist Matt Penman, drummer Jared Schonig and special guest trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

With three brilliant albums of her own songs under her belt, not to mention her game-changing work with three distinctive vocal groups and wide-ranging collaborations with singular artists from Ornette Coleman to Bobby McFerrin, Kinhan decided it was finally time to create an album more in line with the jazz tradition of interpreting

a book of standards. Of course, Kinhan has never been one to follow an obvious route, so the results quickly became something wholly her own. “I approached this project similarly to the way I write songs, except that in this case that creativity was expressed in the arranging and approach to the lyrics,” she explains. “I wanted to make an album that was inspired by Nancy Wilson but still conveys my point of view in the way that I think about, interpret and reimagine music.”

The starting point for the project quickly became Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley, the 1961 album on which the 24-year-old singer was backed by Adderley’s incredible quintet with his brother Nat, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes. Kinhan had fallen in love with the album as a young girl searching through her parents’ record collection, enamored with both Wilson’s soulful voice and her elegant image. “I remember being 7 or 8, staring at the cover of this beautiful woman in a yellow dress and connecting with the songs, the arrangements and the bite of her tone. I know those songs like I know the songs of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. So revisiting them, they feel like a favorite cashmere sweater.”

The 12 tracks on Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley were evenly split between vocal and instrumental pieces, and Kinhan interprets all but one of the vocal tunes on A Sleepin’ Bee. To fill out the repertoire, she began delving into Wilson’s catalogue – only reaching 1964 before she had more than enough to work with. The remaining repertoire is carefully cultivated from Wilson’s early-60s releases, the bulk of it coming from The Swingin’s Mutual!, Wilson’s 1960 collaboration with pianist George Shearing.

“In a way,” Kinhan says, “A Sleepin’ Bee is also a tribute to Cannonball and George Shearing and the fine musicians that played on the original recordings. The pairing of the voice and great players is what it’s all about. It’s never just about singing for me; it’s the whole creative spectrum of arranging notes and form, and connecting with the musicians.”

Those elements are combined and rearranged in disparate and intriguing ways throughout A Sleepin’ Bee, from the laid-back swing of “Let’s Live Again” to the haunted melancholy of “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” whether stretching the melody like taffy on “Never Will I Marry” (parried by Berklee classmate Jensen’s darting trumpet) or finding a playfully bold character at the heart of the title tune. She effectively melds Nat Adderley’s “The Old Country” with Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower,” and fully imbues “Born To Be Blue” with the remorseful mood inherent in its title. Kinhan’s vulnerable, stripped-down version of “Save Your Love For Me” completely reimagines Wilson’s iconic take – which Kinhan previously performed both with and for Wilson herself, first on a recording with the New York Voices and later with the Voices as part of Wilson’s 2004 induction as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master.

Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is Wilson’s debut single, “Guess Who I Saw Today,” whose lyrics haven’t exactly aged well. Kinhan puts a new twist on the tune not only with her sly vocal performance – which acidly comments on a song that frames its tale of infidelity with some decidedly Eisenhower-era social mores – but with an updated arrangement that makes the song her own, apart from Wilson’s quintessential version.

“You better have a perspective on this song, especially as a woman who’s been an outspoken feminist my whole life,” Kinhan says. “It’s not that cheating is old-fashioned; it’s the way that the story is pitched from the beginning, drawing an outmoded picture of marriage where the woman stays home, does the shopping and dotes on her husband, who spends his day at work. To chew on those words was so strange – but it was also fun to hold that mirror up to society and look at its absurdity.”

“(You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am” was a fresh discovery for Kinhan in her research for the project. Despite Wilson’s recording having won a Grammy in 1964, it was not that version but a less ornate live rendition that grabbed Kinhan’s ear, and she takes a similar approach, powerfully singing with gospel-inflected soul accompanied only by Ezrin’s lyrical piano and Penman’s subtle bass. The at times inane lyrics of “Happy Talk” are sent up in a slapstick carnival atmosphere to close the album on a particularly offbeat note.

Recording the album with multiple Grammy-winner Elliot Scheiner at Berklee’s state-of-the-art Shames Family Scoring Stage meant turning the studio into a classroom, a prospect that at first seemed daunting but that Kinhan quickly embraced. “The students brought a performance atmosphere to the session that was beautiful,” she says. “Normally recording sessions can make you incredibly self-conscious, often putting yourself under the microscope, but knowing there was an audience was really liberating. The students witnessed great players laying it down right in front of their eyes, and that made for an inspired environment. The added bonus of sharing Nancy Wilson’s legacy with them was a Sleepin’ Bee we hope to have reawakened for generations to come.”

Multi-Grammy nominated
BOBBY SANABRIA MULTIVERSE BIG BAND
WEST SIDE STORY REVISITED
A 60th Anniversary Tribute

A NEW Latin jazz treatment of this timeless masterwork!!!
Live recording for new CD!

DIZZY’S CLUB COCA-COLA
November 17, 18, 19
Tickets & Info

On November 17,18,19, history will be made as the mutli-Grammy nominated BOBBY SANABRIA MULTIVERSE BIG BAND pays tribute to the Broadway show that redefined the American musical, West Side Story, reimagined with an all new instrumental Latin jazz score.

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but re-set to the turbulent gang culture of 1950s New York City, West Side Story broke every rule in the book.

“They said there’s nothing in it anybody can sing. It’s too depressing, it’s too advanced, it’s too crazy, there are too many tritones, there are too many words in the lyrics—nobody can remember them. It’s too rangy.” –Leonard Bernstein

But after initial setbacks, like the producer pulling out just before the start of rehearsals, the show that almost never came to the stage premiered on September 26, 1957 at New York’s Winter Garden Theater to tumultuous applause and critical acclaim. Its amazing combination of progressive jazz oriented music, lyricism, emotional impact, and amazing choreography, showcasing dance movement that had never been seen before on the Broadway stage, gave birth to the triple threat in musical theatre—performers who could sing, dance and act.

Now virtuoso drummer, percussionist composer, arranger, bandleader, Bobby Sanabria brings his critically acclaimed 21 piece Multiverse Big band to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola November 17, 18. 19 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this masterwork with an all new Latin jazz treatment of Maestro Bernstein’s original score. This exciting reimagining showcases the internal kinetic energy of the music with exciting arrangements featuring various rhythms from Latin America.

Bobby Sanabria states, “Maestro Bernstein’s genius of utilizing the tritone (the opening whistle), the interval of modern jazz harmony, set the stage for something that had never been heard on the Broadway stage. Several Latin music genres were also used in the show. But in this new updated version, the full palette of jazz and Latin American styles will be featured—from Venezuelan joropo, Puerto Rican bomba and plena, Dominican merengue, Brazilian samba and samba cansao, Cuban mambo, cha-cha-cha, bolero, son montuno, West African rooted bembé, and American funk and swing—providing the musicians an explosive platform as jazz soloists.”

In addition the closing evening of November 19 will be live streamed and recorded for Bobby’s upcoming CD release on the Jazzheads label.

The program will feature…

Grammy nominations followed for his Big Band Urban Folktales (2008) and, with the MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Kenya Revisited Live!!! (2009), a tribute and re-working of the Machito Afro-Cubans’ legendary Kenya album, and Tito Puente: Masterworks Live!!! (2011). He has worked as a producer, advisor, and on-air personality on the award-winning documentaries The Palladium Where Mambo Was King (Bravo, 2003), From Mambo to Hip Hop (PBS, 2007), Latin Music U.S.A. (PBS, 2009), and I Like It Like That: The Story of Latin Boogaloo (2015).

In a diverse music career spanning several decades, keyboardist-arranger-composer Pete Levin has performed and recorded with numerous jazz and pop artists, including Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, David Sanborn, Jaco Pastorius, Robbie Robertson, Joe Louis Walker, Lenny White, Vanessa Williams, Chuck Mangione and John Scofield, receiving critical accolades for his work during a 15-year association with Gil Evans, and his eight-year stint with jazz icon Jimmy Giuffre.

Pete’s ninth solo release, Möbius, was recorded live in the studio in two days, capturing the “no boundaries” spirit of Pete’s tenure with the dynamic Gil Evans Orchestra of the ‘70s and ‘80s. The music explores textural grooves ranging from straight-ahead bop to funk, world-beat, and the experimental.

The disc features 10 tracks including eight originals, and unique treatments of “I Mean You” by Thelonious Monk & Coleman Hawkins, and “There Comes A Time” by Tony Williams. Anchored by Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel’s original bassist) and Lenny White (Chick Corea’s original drummer) the high-energy band and the compositions have the spontaneity and dynamics of a ‘live’ performance.

Levin currently tours with the seven-piece Möbius Band and The Levin Brothers Quartet.

MöBIUS – Currently getting International airplay from SiriusXM to the Netherlands and across the U.S.

Fostina Dixon headlines at new Tribeca club with
Winds of Change, featuring Ronnie Burrage,
Lonnie Plaxico, and Donald Smith

Big Apple jazz fans are in for a treat when the acclaimed Delaware-based saxophonist/singer Fostina Dixon appears at the historic Bogardus Mansion with her all-star band, Winds of Change.

A shining star of the New York jazz scene of the ’80s and ’90s, Fostina made a name for herself fronting her own bands on baritone, alto and soprano saxophones, as well as on flute and clarinet. The talented and versatile Saxophone Queen also demonstrated her prodigious skills backing masters such as Abbey Lincoln, Gerald Wilson, Melba Liston, Frank Foster, and Gil Evans.

Equally at home with jazz, R&B, pop, funk, and gospel, Fostina toured with Marvin Gaye for four years. She hired the youthful Ricky Minor to play bass in her band Collage, long before he became bandleader of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2010. And she played and raised her voice in song with James Blood Ulmer, Roy Ayers, and funky trumpeter Tom Browne. Prince was so impressed with a video of Fostina performing “Purple Rain” on alto sax at the famous Apollo Theater that he brought her to Minneapolis to play with him.

With the exposure came acclaim. In the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award-winning book American Women in Jazz: 1900 to the Present, author Sally Placksin described Fostina as “a player of impeccable control and skills with…highly independent ideas.” The saxophonist was judged “a true original” by D. Antoinette Hardy in her book Black Women in American Bands and Orchestras. Fostina received an Excellence in Jazz Performance award from Berklee College of Music, and a Eubie Blake “Emerging Artist” award presented by Dr. Billy Taylor, among other honors.

While maintaining a busy playing and touring schedule, Fostina earned a Fine Arts degree from California Institute of the Arts, and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Wilmington University. She switched her focus from the stage to the classroom when she returned to her Delaware roots.

Just as she garne red critical acclaim and numerous honors for her composing and playing, the kudos didn’t stop when Fostina made the move to teaching. To cite just a few examples of the recognition she’s earned, Fostina has received a Christi Award for her contributions to promoting the arts in the community, an Outstanding Arts Educator award from the Board of Education, and an Outstanding Contributor award from the Council of Jazz Advocates.

Fostina also received grants for a student ensemble, the Wilmington Youth Jazz Band, which she founded to provide instruction and performing experience to students in grades 4 through 12, who are interested in jazz.

After almost two decades as an educator and advocate, Fostina is back in the spotlight. “I am now devoting most of my time to playing and performing, and am celebrating that part of my life with this special event at the Bogardus Mansion,” she says.

At the upcoming gig, listeners can look forward to hearing Fostina present a mix of jazz standards, her own brilliant arrangements of tunes by Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, and songs by her friend Abbey Lincoln. Count on Fostina to add in some of her originals, such as a tune or two from her recently released CD, Here We Go Again, which includes a tribute she penned honoring Marvin Gaye, “Prayer of Jabez.”

Fostina Dixon’s Winds of Change includes:

Drummer Ronnie Burrage is among the most recorded drummers in the history of jazz. He has performed with Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Frank Morgan, Wallace Roney, and a host of other jazz icons. Besides being an in-demand drummer, Ronnie is also an acclaimed composer, producer,  educator, and filmmaker.

Bassist Lonnie Plaxico has shared the stage and recording studio with countless giants of jazz such as Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Alice Coltrane, Cassandra Wilson, Jack DeJohnette, Woody Shaw, and others. Lonnie has also released several CDs as a leader, appeared on movie soundtracks, and TV shows.

Pianist Donald Smith, a veteran of the New York jazz scene, has played with legends including Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Leon Thomas, Pharoah Sanders, and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band. He also established a reputation as a singer and flautist during five years of touring with organist Lonnie Liston Smith. Donald displays his versatility on the keyboards as a regular at St. Nick’s Jazz Pub in Harlem.

Fostina shares a long history with each of the players and is looking forward to the musical magic they’re sure to cook up together during this all-too-rare NYC gig.

Critics love MJ’s new CD “Ladies Day”
Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a

calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while

giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful,
and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.” —Scott Yanow

All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and

overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be
is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, because these standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the

less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly

delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!
–C. Michael Bailey
