A world artist, a jazz vocalist, a creative interpreter, a heavenly sound, a woman with a unique view of music, the world, and of singing.  This is just a small description of songbird Gabriele Tranchina.  She brings to her music a worldview — using music as a force for wholeness, a source of unity and energy for all.

Setting sail into oceans of music, drawing from the world’s beauty and versatility.

A sailing ship is sure to encounter various adventures in its travels — sunshine, storms, calm waters, and high waves. Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in Your Eyes is a varietal musical adventure that sparkles with shining vocals by a respected world vocalist of broad tastes and distinctive experiences, the amazing Gabriele Tranchina.

Each cut found on Of Sailing Ships and The Stars in Your Eyes (Rainchant Eclectic Records, RER1001, Oct 2017) is a side trip to a new destination. Bossa, Latin, swing, ballads, a 7/4, improv…. sadness, hope, joy, relationships, the future… all are there. We are again reminded of how much music is a true and accurate reflection of life itself. Gabriele sets foot on many shores, singing in 5 languages and a vocalese on the 7/4  “A Song for India”. This CD is a progression of her desire to explore music and rhythms from different cultures.

Gabriele Tranchina, vocalist, is joined on this album by her husband pianist, composer and arranger, Joe Vincent Tranchina, who fills the tunes with unusual textures and shapes, guiding the high-level musicians in the band. His tastes, too, are complex and unexpected and the arrangements add an enormous richness to the overall impact of the individual tunes and the entire album.

The other musicians in the band Carlo De Rosa (bass), Grammy award winning Vince Cherico (drums) and Renato Thoms (percussion) each give a distinctive flavor with their individual specialties, contributing unique aspects to each melody and rhythm. Whenever a group of musicians of this highest level gathers, the music they spontaneously create is impossible to categorize or even capture in words. Only listening will truly reveal what has been sculpted as it arose in each moment.

“Person Place Thing” is an interview show recorded around New York and based on this idea: People are particularly engaging when they speak not about themselves, but about something they care about. Guests talk about one person, one place and one thing that is important to them. The result? Surprising stories from great talkers. Randy Cohen, creator and host of “Person Place Thing” began his career writing humor pieces, essays and stories for newspapers and magazines such as The New Yorker, Harpers and The Atlantic. He won three Emmys for his writing on “Late Night With David Letterman” and a fourth Emmy for his work on Michael Moore’s TV Nation. For 12 years he wrote “The Ethicist,” a weekly column for the New York Times Magazine. In 2010, his first play, “The Punishing Blow,” ran at New York’s Clurman Theater. His most recent book, “Be Good: How to Navigate the Ethics of Everything,” was published by Chronicle.

Kleinsinger started producing “Highlights in Jazz” — the longest-running, continuous jazz series in the history of New York City — 45 years ago. He has produced many concerts in New York City schools, colleges and prisons, and co-produced programs for the Newport and New York Jazz festivals as well as for the Jazz Festival in Nice, France. His honors and awards include the 1997 JVC Jazz Festival concert, “Thanks to Jack Kleinsinger for 25 Years of Highlights in Jazz,” the Charlie Parker Memorial Award presented at the 52nd Street Americana Festival, and a proclamation by Manhattan Borough President C. Viginia Fields designating February 5 as Jack Kleinsinger Day in the borough.

Three-time NYFA Fellow, James Emery, will play in concert with the ensemble that he co-founded, the String Trio of New York on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 7:30pm. The performance will take place in the Grand Hall of Morrison Hall Mansion on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. This event is another in the series on both campuses recognizing New York Foundation of the Arts thirty years of honoring artists.
The Mid-Hudson is the first region of SUNY colleges and universities to schedule events.

The String Trio of New York is the main vehicle through which Emery plays his compositions for which he was awarded New York Foundation of the Arts grants and fellowships. James Emery plays his handcrafted guitar eloquently and with “staggering technical virtuosity,” as quoted in All About Jazz.  He has been acclaimed as “one of the world’s finest guitarists as [he] possesses an encyclopedic jazz vocabulary as a technician and composer.” In addition, Emery has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Cary Trust. As a composer, he writes pieces for chamber groups, jazz ensembles, solo guitar, chamber orchestra, and symphony orchestra. In addition to working with many private students, Emery is an adjunct who teaches the jazz ensemble at SUNY Orange.

Violinist Rob Thomas, who is a Berklee College of Music (Boston) professor, is a highly regarded jazz multi-instrumentalist, fluent on violin, cello, and bass. He has held the violin chair of the String Trio of New York since 2001. JazzTimes calls him “a violinist of exceptional creative resources… riveting as a solo voice with a rich complex tone.”

Bassist Tony Marino tours internationally with the Dave Liebman Big Band. His versatility and wide range of musicality has afforded him opportunities to accompany and record with numerous artists from folk to pop. He is a gifted player who plays both acoustic and electric bass.

In addition, the three musicians will give a master class — The String’s the Thing
the same day, October 20 at 11am in Orange Hall Room 23. This session is free and open to the public, and gives attendees time to ask questions and listen to each musician explain and demonstrate his instrument. Orange Hall is located at 24 Grandview Avenue, Middletown.

Tickets to the concert will be available at the door only the evening of the performance.  The Box Office table and exterior doors open at 6:45 PM. Admission: $15 adults;
$10 senior citizens, faculty, staff, alumni; free for all students.

Morrison Hall Mansion is located at 115 South St on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. Free parking is available across the street.

Dear friends,

The Art of Elvin:

The group is a tribute to Art Blakey and Elvin Jones who were both personal and musical mentors of mine. The music is a collection of tunes that were performed by both Art Blakey and/or Elvin Jones as well as some original music. In the tradition of both Art and Elvin the music is hard bop, gospel infused, hard swinging music that is designed to make one feel good. It’s  high energy as well as toe tapping.

Virtuosos LUDOVIC BEIER /Accordion

Special Guests:  GRACE KELLY/Saxophone
KEN PEPLOWSKI/Clarinet…& more
NOV 7 – 12, 2017

Produced by Pat Philips Stratta

The Django Reinhardt NY Festival launched in 2000 at Birdland is in it’s 18th year.  Out of the Festival came the top players, The Django Festival Allstars, who tour 2X a year and always spend a week at their home in the US, BIRDLAND.  On the road, to standing ovations, they play top venues –Hollywood Bowl, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Kennedy Center, Montreal Jazz Festival and much more with original music in the style and Django favorites.  This past summer at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Bowl, critic Scott Yanow wrote “highpoint of the entire festival”!

Dad, DORADO SCHMITT, started performing in NY in 2002  when SAMSON was 21 and  AMATI  5, all grown up now and  together on the Birdland stage for the first time. It’s a family dynasty of enormous  talent that comes from the soul of gypsy life where music is God, joined by virtuoso accordionist LUDOVIC BEIER and Grappelli protégé, PIERRE BLANCHARD, on Violin.  They will put you on the edge of your seats with joy,  smiles, shock you with their hot #’s and break your heart with a ballad, joined by gypsy cousin, Francko Mehrstein, on rhythm guitar and Gino Roman on Bass.

The Special guests include the young great saxist Grace Kelly Nov. 7,8, and 11 and top swinging clarinetist Ken Peploski on Nov. 9 and 10 , For a change of pace,  newcomer Chris Smith will be on drums on Nov. 12th

The music harkens back to the 30’s and 40’s in France to the Hot Club Quintette of Django and Grappelli, romantic days in ‘ol Paris with swing music in the dance halls and streets while campfires lit up the sky on the outskirts of Paris with gypsy life.  Music and family  was and still  is King !  Hot Jazz has more than survived, is vibrant and causing a sensation all over the country.

The musicians  will again be  on tour as well (see schedule below) and at their NY home, Birdland Nov. 7-12 before returning home to  Paris and gypsy community Forbach, France,  near Germany.  It’s real, it’s romantic, it’s exciting…let your heart lead the way.  The Festival was co-founded by Maestro Ettore Stratta.

“….Overall, the album casts a warm, clear glow, with plenty of cohesive interplay between Stryker, organist Jared Gold, drummer McClenty Hunter, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. While influenced by many guitarists, Stryker remains true to his own vision. Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell may be touchstones, but Stryker forges his own sound throughout.” – Martin Kasdan

“A mainstream record of undeniable beauty”
Vittorio Lo Conte /  Music Zoom Italy

If you have chops like Dave’s; his musical sensibilities; his uncanny ability to put together interesting instrumentations; his skill at selecting just the right band mates to make Jazz with; wouldn’t you want to work all the time, too?

It becomes like anything you’re good at; you want to do it as often as possible but occasionally vary the context to keep it from getting stale.
Steven Cerra Jazz Profiles

A real burner of a set, it feels like an artifact from the past, unreleased from Bluenote/Verve, but it’s modern, contemporary touches are well evident showing how a cat that’s been hitting all the right notes for all these years can’t make a false step now.
CHRIS SPECTOR, Midwest Record Editor and Publisher

I give Dave and his talented crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this one… and keep in mind that you heard it here first… this one is BOUND for the awards.

The notion of moving forward by triangulating a space between creative and pragmatic imperatives is a consistent thread throughout Dave Stryker’s four decades in the jazz business, not least on Strykin’ Ahead, his 28th CD as a leader. Stryker augments his working trio of Jared Gold on organ and McClenty Hunter on drums with vibraphone player Steve Nelson, all on-board for a second go-round after their stellar contri- butions to last year’s Eight-Track II. Like the leader, Nelson is a preternaturally flexible and in-the-moment improviser with deep roots in the tradition who knows how to push the envelope without damaging the contents. Stryker internalized those imperatives on a 1984-1986 run with Brother Jack McDuff, and he received further invaluable training in the art of musical communication during a decade on the road with Stanley Turrentine, to whom he paid homage on the 2015 release Don’t Mess With Mister T.

In contrast to his Eight Track II conception of putting his spin on pop hits of his formative years, Stryker returns to his long-standing practice of presenting originals and reharmonized standards from the jazz and show music songbooks. “Shadowboxing” is a burning 14-bar minor blues; his well-considered chordal variations on Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints” proceed to a simmering 5/4 figure. Next is “New You” (a stimulating Stryker contrafact of the oft-played “There Will Never Be Another You”). He personalizes Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower,” set to Hunter’s insinuating bossa-funk groove. The title track “Strykin’ Ahead” has a Cadillac-racing-down-the-freeway-feel; he imbues the lovely melody of “Who Can I Turn To” with the full measure of his plush, inviting tone.

That Stryker knows his Albert King is evident on the slow-drag “Blues Down Deep,” which evokes wee-hours third sets in the inner city grills and lounges of Stryker’s apprentice years. He knows his bebop, too. On Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring,” the solo flights over Stryker’s “modernized” progressions transpire over Hunter’s drum-bass beats and crisp, medium-up four-on-the cymbal; on the chopbusting “Donna Lee,” all members springboard off a churchy vamp and Hunter’s funk-infused swing.

“I’ve always wanted to write vehicles that are fun and interesting to blow over,” Stryker says. “Trying to come up with a beautiful melody that lasts is very fulfilling. Writing is a big part of my voice in this music.” Stryker is too modest to say that his voice is also a big part of jazz, to which he’s devoted a career marked by consistent application of the values that he espouses. But that’s all right—I’ll say it for him.

DJANGO REINHARDT NY FESTIVAL NOV. 7 – 12 @ Birdland

AIR FRANCE Presents
DJANGO REINHARDT NY FESTIVAL
GYPSY GUITAR  DYNASTY
The SCHMITT FAMILY
DORADO, SAMSON, & AMATI

‘Together for the first time in New York
Virtuosos LUDOVIC BEIER /Accordion
PIERRE BLANCHARD /Violin

UPCOMING JAZZ
NEW, INNOVATIVE JAZZ PROGRAMMING
As you might have seen in our 2017-18 ARTS BROCHURE, we are developing a new take on Jazz Vespers this year. For the first time we are working with artists across multiple weeks — we’re calling them Jazz Residencies — helping us to highlight the different seasons of the church year, while working the musical performances more deeply into the fabric of the service.

Our first Jazz Residency started this past Sunday, with percussionist Rogério Boccato leading the group. Check out the lineups for each date below.

Another piece of big news is that we are not hosting All Nite Soul this year because we are diverting all of our energies into the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation weekend.

On October 28, the Gala Concert features a jazz performance by Chanda Rule among other stellar offerings. And then the next day, October 29, Ike Sturm presents his full, uncut Jazz Mass, which has actually rarely been performed in its entirety here at Saint Peter’s even though it originated here. Featuring Ike, his band Evergreen, soloists Ingrid Jensen and Loren Stillman, a string orchestra, and the Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz Ensemble from LIU Post under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Miceli. We hope you can make this very special event. DETAILS HERE

“Pianist Richard Sussman is among the most ambitious composers on the jazz scene today. His latest project, the epic Evolution Suite, exemplifies this creative outlook with dignity and self-assurance.”
– Brian Zimmerman, Downbeat Four Stars! ✮✮✮✮

“A cohesive work displaying his mastery of composition and improvisation.  Filled with diverse rhythms and themes, a palpable excitement, fascinating electronics, and very beautiful moments – the effect of all of this is thrilling.”
– Laurel Gross, NYC Jazz Record

“It was an amazing and very impressive work!
BRAVO & CONGRATULATIONS! “

– Rufus Reid

“Beautiful piece, Richard.  Congratulations!”
– Kenny Werner

“I checked out your “The Evolution Suite”. WOW!! Great! What an ambitious project. Bravo!!”
– Ed Neumeister

“a flair for well-wrought melody and firmly structured solos… with an interest in dark, deep, and even mysterious themes.”   – Neal Tesser, Downbeat

“Sussman’s excellent composing and playing is the driving force at the center of Continuum. Whether weaving a tender meditation like “The Wayfarer” or building a solo whose intricacy seems to reflect his kinetic energy, Sussman mines countless riches from the keyboard.”

Tickets & Info

“One of the most lyrical and romantic pianists around.” – Jazz Weekly’s George Harris

The quartet will feature Hendrik Meurkens.

Commonly termed a classical artist, Roger Davidson has developed a fearlessly eclectic reach, both as a composer and pianist. Roger’s acclaimed catalog ranges from chamber, symphonic, and choral pieces to jazz, tango, Klezmer, children’s music, a wide span of Latin and Brazilian projects. International co-mingling is in Roger’s blood. He was born in Paris in 1952 to a French mother and an American father and grew up in New York. He started playing piano at four, and taking violin lessons at eight. He has studied at St. Olaf College, earning a B.A. in German Language and Asian Studies in 1974, at Boston University where he earned a master’s degree in composition in 1980. Roger then, at the suggestion of early baroque music scholar Sidney Beck, went to Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where he began writing choral music and earned a master’s degree in choral conducting in 1985. Roger then began a professional jazz career when he attended the Stanford Jazz Workshop at Stanford University in California, studying under visiting teachers Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, and James Moody. As a jazz pianist, Roger went on to be mentored by Helen Keane, who later produced his first jazz album.

The Rippingtons: Featuring Russ Freeman
Fri. September 29 at 8pm

“When I started the Rippingtons, I never imagined it would last more than the release of one album, let alone thirty years!” said Russ Freeman, leader and founder of the pioneering, GRAMMY® nominated group The Rippingtons, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary with the release of True Stories, the band’s 22nd CD.

True Stories, which released in June 2016, is a refreshing elixir that will delight devout fans and attract new ones. Joined by original Rippington, alto and soprano saxophonist Brandon Fields, drummer Dave Karasony, bassist and rhodes player Rico Belled and special guest Grammy-winning Jeffrey Osborne, Freeman orchestrates ten compelling original song such as “Wild Tales,” “My Promise,” and “Wonderland.”

True Stories is a testament to the unwavering artistry of Russ Freeman and The Rippingtons and confirmation that there are still many more tales to be told. “I’m trying to reach for a place I have not been. I’m looking for inspiration. I never look back. ”It is this forward momentum that propels the notes on True Stories and keeps the listeners yearning for the next chapter. And the cover features the spunky and funk jazz cat that devoted Rippingtons fans are well acquainted with.

New Jersey Jazz Musician Awarded
Major Grant from Chamber Music America

Chamber Music America (CMA), the national network for ensemble music professionals, has awarded the prestigious New Jazz Works grant to jazz flutist Andrea Brachfeld for the creation and performance of a new jazz composition. The funding, made possible with the support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, is designed to provide financial and administrative support for new ensemble works and to underwrite performances and the recording of the new composition. Fifteen jazz composers and their ensembles were chosen from a pool of hundreds of applications.

“I am honored to have been recognized by Chamber Music America with this major commission,” said Andrea Brachfeld, “and I am thrilled to have the support of this acclaimed organization. My quartet and I look forward to our upcoming performances.”

Named Jazz Flutist of the Year for 2015 by Hot House Jazz Awards, Andrea Brachfeld has been acclaimed by critics and audiences for her music. Her latest CD “Lotus Blossom”
on the Jazzheads label received 4-stars from Downbeat and was played on jazz stations around the country. Featuring Bill O’Connell, Winard Harper and Rufus Reid, the release stayed in the top 20 on the JazzWeek charts for several weeks. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Brachfeld started her career at All Nite Soul at the age of 16. She has performed with great musicians such as Charles Eubanks, Adam Nussbaum Tito Puente, Wallace Roney, Hubert Laws, Paquito D’Rivera, Hilton Ruiz and many others. Her first straight ahead jazz CD, “Lady of the Island,” featured Wallace Roney, Wycliffe Gordon, and Bill O’Connell and received great reviews. She has earned accolades throughout her career including recognition for her musical achievements as a jazz student with a Louis Armstrong Award, and then later with the Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Pionero Award for her contributions to Latin music.

Her current group, Insight, includes pianist Bill O’Connell, bassist Harvie S, and drummer Jason Tiemann.

Bill O’Connell is well-known as a band leader, soloist, arranger, musical director and sideman who is equally at home playing both the Latin and straight-ahead jazz. Breaking in with the legendary Mongo Santamaria, O’Connell quickly established himself as an in-demand keyboardist and arranger in the world of Latin music. But he also worked with some of the greatest straight ahead jazz musicians in the world including Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins and Dave Valentin. He has released 13 albums as a leader along with scores of recordings as a sideman, earning well-deserved praise from critics and audiences.

Bassist Harvie S has recorded and performed with a who’s who of jazz: Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Tony Bennett, Michael Brecker, Paquito D’Rivera, Gil Evans, Art Farmer, Yusef Lateef, Joe Lovano, Zoot Sims, Toots Theilmans and countless others. He toured throughout Europe as a Jazz Ambassador for the United States and has been featured in stories in many different publications from Downbeat to The New York Times.  In addition to playing all over the world, Harvie S is Professor of Jazz Bass at the Manhattan School of Music.

New York City-based drummer Jason Tiemann maintains a busy schedule of recording and performing. Influenced by legendary drummers such as Tony Williams, Billy Higgins and Elvin Jones, Tiemann has recorded and played with many of the top NYC artists including Benny Golson, Dave Liebman, Eric Alexander and Slide Hampton.

Insight is currently putting together a tour to premiere the new work before going into the recording studio. For more information about Andrea Brachfeld and her work, visi

From subtle to sexy to swinging, Chris Pasin and friends’
shine a brilliant light on the best yuletide favorites

Nothing gets music lovers in a celebrating mood like listening to their favorite carols, and this brand-new CD, Baby, It’s Cold Outside, delivers a whopping dose of holiday cheer. On 11 of the most-beloved sounds of the season, trumpeter Chris Pasin and friends show they have a real gift for making such familiar material their own, while maintaining the spirit and warmth that’s such a major part of the yuletide celebrations.

Equally comfortable on both trumpet and flugelhorn, leader Chris Pasin has proved himself among the most versatile of musicians. Besides fronting his own bands, he’s been a mainstay of ensembles led by the likes of Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin, George Russell, and Brother Jack McDu . Pasin has also appeared with legendary gures including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Ray Charles, to name a few.

For Baby, It’s Cold Outside, Pasin has assembled a stellar ensemble of some of the most in-demand musicians on the New York jazz scene. Among them: pianist Armen Donelian (Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Paquito D’Rivera); bassists Ira Coleman (Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Herbie Hancock) and Rich Syracuse (Mose Allison, Bernard Purdy, Kurt Elling); drummer Je Siegel (Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Sheila Jordan); singer Patricia Dalton Fennell (Dave Holland, Giacomo Gates, Pete Levin); and guitarist Peter Einhorn (Joe Lovano, Placido Domingo, Jim Hall).

Highlights from Baby, It’s Cold Outside include:
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”: Here’s a subtle, sensitive and understated version of a classic that steers clear of the overly sentimental, right from Donelian’s heart-felt piano opener. “We Three Kings”: Uptempo and bursting with energy, the band brings great drive and brilliant feeling to this beloved carol, which features an excellent solo from leader Pasin. “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”: Check out the sexy and playful collaboration between Pasin and vocalist Patricia Dalton Fennell. The twosome demonstrate their wit and camaraderie as they work their seductive skills on the lyrics. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”: A very welcome new take on a traditional tune turns it into a cooker; the great rhythmic drive makes it downright danceable. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”: Pasin and Einhorn shine on solos in this unique treatment of a 1940s-vintage hit.

Pasin and friends’ fresh take on the greatest songs of the season celebrate the beloved classics in an original and vastly appealing style. Listeners will enjoy old favorites in a new way this holiday season, thanks to the great renditions performed by this talented and creative ensemble.
