LENY ANDRADE RETURNS TO BIRDLAND
“From Rio with Love”
July 26 – 30
Stephen Holden of The New York Times writes …
“To describe Ms. Andrade as both the Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald of bossa nova only goes so far in evoking a performer whose voice
seems to contain the body and soul of Brazil. You may think you know ‘The Girl From Ipanema’……..but you haven’t really absorbed it
until you’ve heard Ms. Andrade sing it in Portuguese; disgorge might be a better word than sing, since, like everything else she performs,
it seem to well up from the center of the earth.”
LENY ANDRADE, a queen of Bossa Nova in Rio de Janeiro has been fascinating audiences in the New York area as well in past several years
since Producers Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta started bringing her to Birdland. “There are few artists with her talent as a singer/musician
and also endearing personality and charm. She can captivate any audience as they fall in love with her” say the Producers.
Born in Rio in 1943, Leny is a ‘grammy’ winning artist, perhaps the greatest singer of Brazilian jazz and samba. Tony Bennett says…”She
is the Ella Fitzgerald of Brazil as her voice contains the body and soul of Brazil.”
She has performed alongside greats Paquito D’Rivera, Joao Donato, Eumir Deodate and Francis Hune, amongst many other top artists. Leny
approaches music as an instrumentalist and arranges her harmonies, rhythm changes, and melodies with the same care and inventiveness as a
horn player and then… she breathes life into a lyric.
