The Institute of Jazz Studies Presents a Research Roundtable entitled:
Loren Schoenberg: The Bill Savory Collection
Bill Savory, who recorded commercials off the air for a transcription service by day, compiled his own musical treasure chest at night, recording directly from the radio networks on professional equipment. The extended nightclub and ballroom performances captured were longer, free-flowing, and creatively daring as the artists were freed from the constraints of a conventional studio.
Although the Benny Goodman Savory air checks were known to exist, the collection had been packed away for decades and only rumored to exist. It was acquired by the National Jazz Museum of Harlem in 2010, the culmination of a 36-year quest. The discovery made headlines around the world, including the front page of the New York Times. With two album of material already issued on iTunes, Schoenberg will talk about future releases and play samples from the collection.
Loren Schoenberg is the Founding Director and Senior Scholar at the National Jazz Museum of Harlem. He's also a Grammy Award winning writer, tenor saxophonist and band leader.
The roundtable is scheduled to run on Thursday March 2nd, 7-9 PM at Clement's, 15 Washington, Newark, NJ 07102.
