Jazz and pop music critic for The New York Times, shares his new book, “Every Song Ever: Twenty Ways To Listen in An Age of Musical Plenty.”

Ben Ratliff, a jazz a pop critic for The New York Times since 1996, has just released his fourth book, "Every Song Ever: Twenty Ways To Listen in an Age of Musical Plenty," a field guide to listening in an age of overwhelming musical abundance. By revealing the essential similarities between wildly different kinds of music, Ratliff breaks from traditional music criticism focusing on the musician’s intent and instead illustrates the listener’s experience. His previous books include, “The Jazz Ear: Conversations Over Music”(2008);  “Coltrane: The Story of a Sound,” a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award (2007); and “Jazz: A Critic’s Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings"(2002).
