Passings: Terry Fischer Siegel of the Murmaids (1946 – 2017)

Terry Fischer Siegel, one-third of the vocal group The Murmaids, died on Tuesday, March 28 after battling Parkinson's disease.

Terry and her sister Carol, who was also in the group, were the daughters of Carl T. Fischer, a Native American jazz pianist and composer who worked with Frankie Laine and wrote his 1945 hit We'll Be Together Again along with Billie Holiday's You've Changed. Carl died in 1956.

In 1963, when the sisters were 15 and 17, they joined with their friend and neighbor Sally Gordon (17) to form a singing group. The trio cut their first recordings with Mike Post, doing demos and singing backup at Gold Star Studios. Kim Fowley, the man who would eventually be behind the Runaways, offered to help the girls record a number of songs. Among the five they recorded was a David Gates (Bread) song called Popsicles and Icicles which had vocal arrangements by Skip Battin (Skip and Flip, the Byrds, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Flying Burito Brothers).

Released on Chattahoochee Records, the song went to number 3 in early 1964 on the Hot 100 and 2 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Their second and third singles, Heartbreak Ahead (also by Gates) and Wild and Wonderful, failed to make the top 100 and it was soon over. Chattahoochee released a few more songs under the Murmaids name, but they did not include the original three members.

Terry ended up going to college and, in 1969, once again entered the music field recording for a group called The Carnival. She went on to become a background vocalist in both TV and recording. In 1977, she was hired as lead vocalist of Sid Butera and the Witnesses who opened for Frank Sinatra during his Ol' Blues Eyes is Back Tour.

Terry is survive by her sister Carol.
