When I came to The Times in 2008, I arrived with my own idiosyncratic taste profile, fearful that it might not be right for the job, or the place. I fretted that I’d have to become something other than myself in order to make things work.

Ben Ratliff discusses his tenure as a music critic at The New York Times. The New York Times

Then I met Ben Ratliff.

Ben — a deeply patient thinker and writer, a model of pensive and ethical criticism — has been a music critic at the Times since 1996. Today is his last day. In those two decades, he’s been a singular voice on music: jazz, of course, but also heavy metal, hardcore, samba, fado, hip-hop, pure pop and so much more. He has carved out a path through music that’s unique and fluid, and one that reassured me that mine (completely different, and established on different terms) could be acceptable, too.
He has also been a game co-host and foil on the Popcast for the past few years, and so when it came time for a valedictory, it was only right that we sit for one final bull session. Cheers to Ben on a spectacular run, and for defending deeply dubious sound art to the very end.
