TRULY A JAZZ RECORD FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Native Soul’s new CD Soul Step is a powerful combination of memorable melodies, deep grooves, and inspired solos. Soul Step is the second release from the New York-based collective quartet Native Soul, and the CD shows them on their musical “home turf”: Hard-swinging NewYork Jazz, as well as funk, brazilian, and gospel music. Their repertoire includes original compositions by all four members with a few “covers” thrown in: Jimi Hendrix’ Castles Made of Sand and the old standard The End of A Love Affair are both given unique interpretations. Native Soul is made up of four gifted and unique players: The dynamic drummer Steve Johns has performed and recorded with artists such as Sonny Fortune, Jimmy Heath, Randy Brecker, StanleyTurrentine, Gary Bartz, Gary Smulyan and Dr. Billy Taylor. Bass virtuoso Marcus McLaurine has shared the stage with Kenny Burell, James Moody, Lou Donaldson, Clark Terry, Cleo Laine, Abbey Lincoln, Hank Jones, and the Count Basie Orchestra. Equally at home in the jazz and afro-carribbean jazz worlds, the brilliant saxophonist Peter Brainin has performed and recorded with Hilton Ruiz, Bobby Watson, Randy Weston, Chico O’Farrill, Joey Calderazzo, as well as the Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. One of New York’s leading young pianists, Noah Haidu has played with Winard Harper, Duane Eubanks, Jon Irabagon, Essiet Essiet, Ken Fowser and Behn Gellice.
