FOR YOUR GRAMMY® CONSIDERATION
  Gabriel Mark Hasselbach

shem.gif
Note: Voting ends Oct 10!

GRAMMY Awards® Voters, find and vote for Gabriel in the BEST INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ ALBUM category for his explosive juggernaut MidCentury Modern Vol. 2 (which features icons Ernie Watts, Cory Weeds, and Miles Black), as well as two entries in the BEST IMPROVISED JAZZ SOLO category for the kinetic romp on Freddie Hubbard’s SuperBlue, and the ebullient homage to Blue Mitchell ‘Mamacita’. (Click to listen). This album is an imaginative and powerful new spin on the classic soul-jazz sound of the ‘60s.

Gabriel Mark Hasselbach is an anomaly in the jazz world, an award winning mad skills artist who walks a tightrope over the great jazz divide. Gabriel is a prodigious
well seasoned trumpet/flugelhorn player, who also performs and records on flute, vocals and valve trombone. He’s a true jazzer at heart, with several straight-ahead albums that have impacted the JazzWeek charts, but is best known in Contemporary Jazz circles with 14 critically acclaimed releasesten Billboard hitsAlbum of the Year Award, Instrumentalist of the Year Award, several JUNO awards (Canadian equiv of a Grammy), and a plethora of other awards including West Coast Music Award and gold album awards.

He is now heading to Europe to support this stellar release
MidCentury Modern Vol 2 which follows in the footsteps of MidCentury Modern Vol 1, which he debuted during the 2018 New Orleans Jazz Festival at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. MCM Vol 2, like Vol 1, is a straight-ahead yet funky soul-jazz romp that features titans such as Ernie Watts, Cory Weeds, and Miles Black, and it is seasoned with some NOLA style hotsauce. This album truly amalgamates the best of all Gabriel’s skills into a cohesive jazz juggernaut. See what Jazz Quarterly Magazine has to say.

Gabriel is no stranger to the festival circuit and has a long history of festivals under his belt (Montreux, JVC, North Sea, Maui, Tokyo, San Pancho, Chandler Jazz, etc) and has toured in a plethora of countries, even performing for Presidents, Royalty and Bill Gates. He has recorded and/or performed with well known names like, George Benson, Larry Coryell, Bob James, Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb, Brian Bromberg, Bob Mintzer, and a host of others. Gabriel always puts on a great show, and besides getting funky, goes deep into the straight-ahead jazz lexicon.

Gabriel’s recognizable sound and innate lyrical style are key components in his ability to create engaging, succinct and inviting jazz, regardless of which side of the jazz fence it falls.

Chicago’s Award Winning Western Swing band Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas releases an Authentic Western Swing single in honor of Chicago’s WLS Barndance and the PBS documentary “Country Music” by Ken Burns

“I Hear You Knockin'”

shem.gif
For their long awaited second album, the band is preparing to release a new collection of  Western Swing and Retro Country songs from the 1940’s & 50’s  this Winter.    Listen to  a sneak preview  with their new single  “I Hear You Knockin'” – a Western Swing standard  originally recorded in 1942 by the renown Milwaukee Western Swing band Pee Wee King and his Golden West Cowboys

Most people think of the Grand Old Opry when they think of old time Country and Western Music, but Chicago’s radio station WLS  and their National Barn Dance was one of the first major radio stations to feature Country and Western Music going live over the airways  during the late 1920’s, long before the Opry came into being.  WLS syndicated their shows on dozens of smaller radio stations across the Mid and Northwest regions, spreading Country Music all over the US, bringing it into people’s homes.  The new album by Susie Blue will feature tunes from the bands that performed on the Barn Dance,  played by a stellar group of musicians heralding not only from the Chicago area but from Austin, TX and Los Angeles as well.

The new single headlines some fast and frisky fiddle starring one of Austin’s best violinists Javier Chaparro who keeps this lively tune capering all the way through.  Los Angeles Jazz Writer and Critic Scott Yanow, who was an early supporter of the band’s Western Swing,  performs a romping Melodica solo between verses,  and there is a real Cowboy vocal duet which joins Austin singer Keith Weber from the band Cadillac Drive  with vocalist Solitaire Miles.  They trade disparaging verses in a waggery quarrel of a Cowboy and his Ladylove that seems to come right  out of a script from a Silver Screen Hollywood Cowboy romance.  There is also an bonafide retro country guitar solo by the band’s musical director Neal Alger.

Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas is one of the few current Western Swing bands who genuinely presents America’s musical history, recording and arranging classic songs in an authentic manner, re-creating the past with highly enjoyable and entertaining tributes to the bands and songwriters of the genre.   Their new single has already been put into rotation by BBC Radio and is getting airplay internationally as many await the release of the new album this fall.   –  JM Reid

ARBORS RECORDS

LAUNCHES A JAZZ CELEBRATION OF

LERNER & LOEWE

WITH TWO NEW ALL-STAR ALBUMS

AVAILABLE ONLINE AND IN STORES

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11

www.arborsrecords.com

distributed by MVD

shem.gif

ARBORS RECORDS will celebrate the music of iconic composer Frederick Loewe this fall with two new

albums of songs from the legendary musicals of Lerner & Loewe performed by an astonishing array of jazz heavyweights. Counterpoint Lerner & Loewe features Dick Hyman on piano and Ken Peplowski on

clarinet and tenor sax. Adrian Cunningham & His Friends Play Lerner & Loewe features bandleader

and saxophonist/clarinetist/flautist Adrian Cunningham with Fred Hersch on piano, John Hébert on

bass and Eric McPherson on drums, with guest stars Randy Brecker on trumpet and Wycliffe Gordon

on trombone. Both albums will be available on streaming platforms, download and CD wherever music is sold on Friday, October 11.

When My Fair Lady was enjoying its hit run on Broadway after opening in 1956, Shelley Manne & His Friends’ seminal album, Modern Jazz Performances of My Fair Lady, became a cultural touchstone as the then bestselling jazz album of all time. Since then, such jazz luminaries as Quincy Jones, Nat King Cole, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Billy Taylor, among many others, have presented their unique takes on the Lerner & Loewe catalogue – all the way through Dick Hyman and Ruby Braff’s collection in 1989.

Thirty years later, in that same grand tradition, these two new collections present pioneering interpretations of songs not only from household-name shows like My Fair Lady, Camelot and Brigadoon, but also from less frequently heard Lerner & Loewe properties like The Day Before Spring.

Hyman and Peplowski’s Counterpoint Lerner & Loewe displays the incomparable improvisational

connection between these two world-renowned artists in addition to a ground-breaking contrapuntal style – presenting well-loved melodies in unexpected and exhilarating ways. For instance, according to Ken, by giving “a classical kind of setting with these ominous chords underneath the melody” to My Fair Lady’s famously ardent “On the Street Where You Live,” the song takes on an almost solemn sound instead of its customary love-at-first-sight ebullience. Camelot’s usually haunting “Follow Me” gets a rhythmic bounce. Its lush romantic ballad “If Ever I Would Leave You” becomes stunningly simple. And the sweet, gentle melody of “Waitin’ for My Dearie” from Brigadoon is, instead, jaunty with a modern syncopation.

Hyman says of his musical relationship with Peplowski: “We’ve been working on contrapuntal playing for

some years now. Getting to unexpected territory is one of the pleasures of our collaboration: we listen to each other and we trust each other. Loewe’s music is very melodic, but it is our jazzman’s tradition to fill up the harmony, and to make the whole thing a little more adventurous. Sometimes we go off on strange tangents and kind of dare the other fellow to understand what we’re doing or create something in contrast, just to make something come out in ways we didn’t expect.”

Adrian Cunningham & His Friends Play Lerner & Loewe boasts the best possible mixture of written

charts and improvisation, demonstrating a variety of approaches to harmony, tempo and time signature.

Cunningham started the process with research. He explained: “I watched all the movies, My Fair Lady,

Camelot, Brigadoon and Paint Your Wagon. It was helpful to put the numbers in context, having the music come from a real story, more than just notes on paper. I loved trawling through the characters, asking ‘What do they mean when they’re singing this melody?’ I knew the songs in the basic repertoire, but I wanted to go deeper, do some detective work, present songs that perhaps hadn’t been widely known. I am happy to create something fresh with vintage material. So much great American music can continue to be reborn and reshaped into something new.”

Cunningham embraced the idea of many of his versions would be significantly different from the originals, while preserving the essence of each selection. Thus, the meditative intention and connection to nature can still be heard in “I Talk to the Trees.” In “They Call the Wind Maria,” the chaotic nature of the wind is maintained through the fast tempo choices, the driving rhythm section ostinato, and the open, angular harmony. And “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” finds a context that is appropriately cheeky and playful, as Adrian creates a specific new groove for the melody section to play over.

On “The Heather on the Hill,” Fred Hersch comments: “I’ve played it for years, it’s just such a lovely sentiment. Loewe captured that little Scottish essence in that tune. You can visualize a place when you play it, the lyric is very descriptive, and it’s got a very nice form to it.” Cunningham, in turn, says, “I don’t think anybody can convey a ballad like Fred; it’s amazing the way he delivers harmony and supports you. That level of professionalism is just heavenly.”

“Loewe’s music brings something very special to the jazz world,” continues Hersch, “because of its roots in classical operetta. The modulations were a little more daring, going to farther key centers, different forms.” Hersch chooses “Just You Wait” as a favorite – beloved from My Fair Lady but rarely heard in a jazz context. “It’s such a great character song,” he says, “and often what enters the repertoire are not specific character songs. But ones like this, with a sentiment that speaks to everybody, can work as standalone pieces.”

These two albums together celebrate the reinvention of a catalogue of glorious songs – in some cases almost 75 years after they were first played – introducing a new generation to the music and magic of Lerner & Loewe. DICK HYMAN, who was born in 1927 and graduated from Columbia University in 1948, has worked as a pianist, organist, arranger, music director and composer throughout a long and busy musical career that got underway in the early 1950s. His versatility in all of these areas has resulted in film scores, orchestral compositions, concert appearances and well over 100 albums recorded under his own name. While developing a masterful facility for improvisation in his own piano style, Hyman has also investigated ragtime and the earliest periods of jazz and researched and recorded the piano music of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Eubie Blake and Fats Waller. Other solo recordings include the music of Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Duke Ellington.

Hyman’s early club engagements in New York included Café Society, playing with Tony Scott’s Quartet; Bop City with the Red Norvo Sextet; and various 52nd Street clubs with Sol Yaged and others. He began his recording and broadcasting career with Alvy West’s Little Band. He joined the NBC staff orchestra for five years in the 1950s, performed with Eddie Safranski’s morning radio show in addition to Milt DeLugg’s orchestra on the Morey Amsterdam Show, and was an organist on soap operas and game shows.

He became a freelance pianist, organist, arranger, composer, music director for many radio, television, and Broadway shows, for example, acting as music director for Arthur Godfrey for three years, as organist on the TV program “Beat the Clock” for five years and as arranger and orchestrator of the Broadway musical Sugar Babies. He served as music director for such television programs as Benny Goodman’s final appearance (on PBS) and for “In Performance at the White House.” Under contract to MGM Records, his hit recording of “Mack the Knife” from The Threepenny Opera was followed by many albums. He moved to Command Records, where his recording of “The Minotaur” on the Moog synthesizer landed on the Billboard charts in 1969.

Hyman’s original movie scores include Moonstruck starring Cher as well as many films for Woody Allen, including The Purple Rose of Cairo, Bullets Over Broadway and Stardust Memories. He also composed many commercials for Edel Music, and dance scores for Twyla Tharp, the Cleveland Ballet and others.

He has also been the arranger/music director/soloist for, among others, Count Basie, the Mills Brothers, Kay Starr, Margaret Whiting, Tony Bennett, Cozy Cole, Enoch Light, Ethel Ennis, Leonard Feather, Gail Garnett, Urbie Green, Roy Hamilton, Al Hirt, Bill Hayes, Jonah Jones, J.J. Johnson, Jessye Norman, Maxine Sullivan, Flip Phillips, Robert White, Doc Severinsen, Sandy Stewart, the Kirby Stone Four, Sam “The Man” Taylor and Barry Manilow. He was a frequent

guest with Jim Cullum’s Riverwalk Band in San Antonio and a soloist on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and accompanied Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie during their unique television appearance in 1951.

He served as pianist and organist for recordings by The Drifters, Ivory Joe Hunter, LaVern Baker, Pearl Bailey, Al Caiola, Tony Mottola, The Ray Charles Singers, Perry Como, The Four Lads, Georgia Gibbs, The Harmonicats, Neal Hefti, Billie Holiday, Quincy Jones, Joni James, Andre Kostelanetz, Johnny Mathis, Mitch Miller, Jane Morgan, Louis Prima, Perez Prado, Kate Smith, Joe Venuti, Bill Watrous and others. In 1975, he led the New York Jazz Repertory Company in a concert of the music of Louis Armstrong at Carnegie Hall, produced by George Wein. Recordings on Atlantic Records followed, as well as tours of Europe and numerous U.S. concerts. Duets and collaborations include recent work with, among others, Derek Smith, Ruby Braff and John Sheridan.

He is a frequent soloist for concerts with conductor Yaacov Bergman. Mr. Hyman’s concert compositions include two piano concerti, a clarinet concerto for Ken Peplowski, various chamber music pieces and many pieces for piano. He has been heard in “Three-Piano Crossover” with the late Marian McPartland and Ruth Laredo and in numerous pops concerts. He served as artistic director of the acclaimed Jazz in July series at New York’s 92nd Street Y for twenty years.

Hyman’s box set Century of Jazz Piano is a historical survey comprising 121 audio performances plus a disc of DVD instruction. Mr. Hyman has also had a prolific career in New York as a studio musician and has won seven “Most Valuable Player” awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He received an Emmy for his original score for the daytime drama “Sunshine’s on the Way” and another for musical direction of a PBS special on Eubie Blake. He is

a member of the Jazz Hall of Fame of the Rutgers Institute and the New Jersey Jazz Society. In 2017, Mr. Hyman received the Jazz Master Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as an honorary doctorate from the Julliard School of Music.

KEN PEPLOWSKI played his first professional engagement while still in elementary school in Cleveland, Ohio. He and his trumpet-playing brother Ted made many local radio and TV appearances and played for Polish dances and weddings virtually every weekend all through high-school. By the time Ken was in his early teens, he was experimenting with jazz by playing in the school “stage” bands and also jamming with many of the local jazz musicians.

After a year of college, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow. Peplowski met Sonny Stitt while on the road with the Dorsey band and studied with him. In 1980, Ken moved to New York City and was soon playing in all kinds of settings, from traditional to avant-garde jazz. In 1984, Benny Goodman came out of retirement and put together a new band, hiring Ken on tenor saxophone. Peplowski signed with Concord Records and recorded close to 20 albums as a leader, including The Natural Touch in 1992 which won “Best Jazz Record of the Year” from the Prises Deutschen Schallplatten Kritiken, and The Other Portrait, recorded in Sofia, Bulgaria with the Bulgarian National Symphony, and highlighting Ken’s classical side. He also recorded two records on the Nagel Heyer label, Lost in the Stars and Easy To Remember, the latter featuring Bobby Short on his last recording. He has performed in venues from small clubs to the Hollywood Bowl, headlined in Las Vegas, the Newport Jazz Festival, pops concerts, European festivals and clubs, played at home in New York, and has done everything from playing on the soundtracks to Woody Allen movies to guest soloing on records including for Marianne Faithfull and Cuban vocalist Isaac Delgado to acting as music director for interactive French and Italian cookbooks (“Menus And Music”). The list of musicians with whom Ken has collaborated includes Mel Tormé, Leon Redbone, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Madonna, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, Steve Allen, Bill Charlap and Erich Kunzel. Ken is currently artistic director of the Sarasota Jazz Festival, the Newport Beach Jazz Party and the Newport, Oregon Jazz Festival. His latest album is Amizade, a duo recording with Brazilian guitarist Diego Figuereido, also on Arbors Records.

ADRIAN CUNNINGHAM is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and world traveler. Originally from Sydney, Australia and now based in New York, Adrian is proving to be one of his country’s top exports. With fluent command of the saxophones, clarinet, and flute, he is one of the finest multi-instrumentalists in jazz today. Adrian is the recipient of the Hot House Saxophone Award for 2017. Adrian’s band, Professor Cunningham and His Old School, is the winner of international band competition World Jam (Madrid: 2016, 2017) and Best Band Award at 2017 Harlem Festival (Vilnius, Lithuania). When he is not busy performing in New York with some of its finest players, he is touring the world playing jazz festivals and swing events.

Since relocating to New York City in 2008, Adrian has performed at some of the Big Apple’s finest clubs, including The Blue Note, Smalls, Birdland, 55 Bar, Apollo Theatre, Fat Cat, Dizzy’s at Jazz at Lincoln Center and even an event at the hallowed Village Vanguard. He has played with such jazz stars as Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Jon Batiste, George Coleman Jr., Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, Ted Rosenthal, Chris Potter and René Marie. Adrian is currently performing with world-class trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, including a performance at the London Jazz Festival and a recording in Abbey Road Studios alongside Wess Anderson, Reginald Veal and Herlin Riley. Adrian’s travels with the Wycliffe Gordon quintet have also included appearances at the Johannesburg Jazz Festival, Bern Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Newport Jazz Festival and regular performances in New York at Dizzy’s at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Adrian has also appeared on two of Wycliffe’s albums to rave reviews (“One of the unexpected joys [of the album] is the rich, woody clarinet of Cunningham,” Hot House NYC).

In 2013 Cunningham formed a traditional New Orleans-style outfit called Professor Cunningham and His Old School, deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. They have become one of the top bands on the international Swing scene, performing at the Blue Note Jazz Festival (NYC), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (Australia), Sopot Molo Jazz Festival (Poland), Snowball (Stockholm), SLOX (California), CPH:LX (Copenhagen) and Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Cunningham also has a busy individual jazz festival schedule, including repeat appearances at the North Carolina Jazz Festival, Central Illinois Jazz Festival, Newport and also concerts at the famous Gennett studios (Richmond, Indiana). Additional international festival credits include Montreux Jazz Festival (3 times), Johannesburg, Japan, London, Tokyo and Sopot Molo (Poland). From 2014 to 2017, Adrian was the leader of the saxophone section of the Grammy-winning Vince Giordano and the

Nighthawks, a NYC-based 1920s swing orchestra responsible for the soundtracks for “Boardwalk Empire” and movies including The Aviator. As a leader, he has recorded ten CDs and two DVDs both in Australia with his quartet and also in New York through Arbors Records. His 2017 release Jazz Speak, recorded with jazz stars Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton and Ted Rosenthal, broke the top 20 in the U.S. national JazzWeek charts.

FREDERICK LOEWE (1901—1988) composed the scores for some of the American theater’s most memorable musicals, including My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon and Gigi, all written with his lyricist-partner Alan Jay Lerner. A musical prodigy by age four, Fritz Loewe was born in Berlin to Austrian parents. His father was a renowned tenor who originated the role of Prince Danilo in The Merry Widow in 1906. Raised in the Viennese operetta tradition, Loewe studied in Berlin with famous pianist-composers Ferruccio Busoni and Eugen d’Albert and composer Emil von Rezniek. At 13, he was the youngest piano soloist ever to play with the Berlin Philharmonic and the sheet music for “Katrina,” a popular song Loewe wrote when he was 15, eventually sold over one million copies. In 1924, after touring the United States with his father, Loewe chose to stay in America intending to become a concert pianist and write for Broadway.

Instead, for the next decade, Loewe worked at a variety of odd jobs, including cattle punching, gold prospecting and prize fighting, as well as playing piano in clubs and in movie theaters accompanying silent films. During the 1930s, he contributed music to a number of Broadway revues and shows, none of which met with much success. In 1942, Loewe approached Lerner at the Lambs Club in New York to talk about collaborating on a show, and thus began one of Broadway’s most extraordinary and productive partnerships. Their first Broadway venture, What’s Up?, opened on Broadway in 1943 and ran for only 63 performances. It was followed two years later by The Day Before Spring, a moderate success which ran for 167 performances. In 1947, Lerner and Loewe had their first Broadway hit, Brigadoon, followed in 1951 by a second hit with Paint Your Wagon, which included such songs as “They Call the Wind Maria,” “I Talk to the Trees,” “Another Autumn” and “Wand’rin’ Star.” Both featured choreography by the legendary Agnes DeMille.

In 1956, My Fair Lady, starring Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews, opened on Broadway to universal acclaim. Often called “the perfect musical,” the show ran for 2,717 performances and the cast album sold more than five million copies. Their 1958 film musical, Gigi, won nine Academy Awards and in 1960 came their last great success, Camelot, with Richard Burton and Julie Andrews. In 1974, Lerner lured Loewe out of retirement to work on their last venture together: the film version of Antoine de St Exupéry’s The Little Prince. Brigadoon was presented in an all-star concert production at New York’s City Center in 2017 and an acclaimed Broadway revival of My Fair Lady just concluded a triumphant run at Lincoln Center Theater and is headed for a national tour.

ARBORS RECORDS was founded in 1989 by Rachel and Mat Domber (1928–2012) with the goal of recording and preserving classic styles of jazz. Though by profession a lawyer in New York with real estate interests in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Florida, Mat was, at heart, an ardent jazz fan, record collector and listener, beginning with his visits to Nick’s in Greenwich Village as a pre-teen. Arbors has, since the time of its first release, issued almost 450 CDs, featuring such artists as Bucky Pizzarelli, Dave Frishberg, Nicki Parrott, Ruby Braff, Bob Wilber, Harry Allen, Dan Barrett, Warren Vache, Bob Haggart, Rebecca Kilgore, Johnny Varro, George Masso, Bobby Gordon and Jacob Fischer, to name only a few. And while the label may have started with Dixieland, Arbors — now run by Mat’s widow and fellow jazz enthusiast and advocate Rachel Domber — currently embraces traditional, contemporary and classic jazz and the swing styles of the 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. And, regardless of the era, all of its recordings have in common a reverence for talent and a love of melody, improvisation and swing. Arbors sponsors the Suncoas Jazz Classic in Clearwater Beach, FL.

Pablo Ziegler Chamber Quartet  Radiotango
(Zoho ZM 201905) Street Date: Date: May 24, 2019

PABLO ZIEGLER – piano,  HECTOR DEL CURTO – bandoneon,
JISOO OK – cello,  PEDRO GIRAUDO – bass
UPC Code: 880956190525

http://www.zohomusic.com/cds/ziegler_radiotango.html

Radiotango is the latest terrific release by pianist/composer, and GRAMMY and LATIN GRAMMY winner Pablo Ziegler, an artist who been synonymous with the very best of tango music for decades. Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ziegler is celebrated for pushing the musical boundaries of Nuevo Tango. And for good reason: He has helped to shape this very genre, beginning his career as Astor Piazzolla’s pianist, and later, composing and arranging his own works that have become standout classics. Ziegler has breathed fresh ideas into tango, adding influences of classical music and contemporary jazz to the genre, to the delight of audiences around the world. Radiotango continues Ziegler’s intrepid and ceaseless march toward adding a fresh and vibrant spirit to the music.

The title track Radiotango comes from the introduction of the radio program “FM Tango” that aired in Buenos Aires in 1988 and 1989. There is no doubt that this arrangement will catch the antennas of porteños (those from Buenos Aires), with rolling lines performed by Ziegler on piano and Hector del Curto on bandoneon who joined again following Ziegler’s previous 2018 Grammy-winning album “Jazz Tango”. Maria Ciudad is a deliberate milonga that was dedicated to Ziegler’s daughter Maria, whose namesake is also the original name of the beloved city: Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires. Imagine Ziegler’s music taking you to and from the obelisk at the city center, with stops in Plaza de Mayo and Teatro Colon. Asfalto establishes a propulsive ostinato that carries forth through the piece, to evoke the pitter-patter of those walking through the Bueno Aires streets.

El Empedrado harkens to vintage tangos from the 1920s and 1930s. Ziegler infuses the piece with bright lines and incandescent virtuosity that we’ve come to expect from the master musician. Milonga Del Adios is akin to a farewell tribute that Ziegler composed for his late mentor and friend Astor Piazzolla who passed away on July 4, 1992. Desde Ostros Tiempos showcases Ziegler’s prowess as a composer, fusing a classic tango style with contemporary harmony and tonalities. La Conexion Porteña is also familiar number, the soundtrack of an Argentinean film that was based on the US film “The French Connection.” You’ll sense the frenetic feel of the thrilling film. Paradoxically, the movie wasn’t released because of a government ban, but the music became widely known.

La Rayuela evokes a brisk milonga rhythm that has become a favorite for tango dancers. It was initially popularized in the early twentieth century. Ziegler re-arranged the cello in a more melodic way, which is performed by the incredible Jisoo Ok, over the rock-solid bass foundation provided by one of the premier bassists in tango music, Pedro Giraudo, a 2018 Latin Grammy winner in his own right. Muchacha de Boedo is Ziegler’s stirring tribute to Boedo, the iconic neighborhood in Buenos Aires, which is referenced in the lyrics of several tango songs. Upon hearing this tune, you may start to think of the bustling city life in this remarkable, urbane metropolis. Lastly, Fuga Y Misterio is an elegant fuga style which Piazzolla composed in 1960. It’s from the opera “Maria de Buenos Aires” and alludes to the time in which he studied counterpoint in Paris with Nadia Boulanger.

To encounter Ziegler’s music is to experience genius. And to encounter the man himself, is to know a gentleman. It has been a high privilege to collaborate on Radiotango with one of the greatest tango masters of them all. – Kabir Sehgal

“The Jazz Journalists Association grew out of meetings of writers, broadcasters and photographers in Chicago in 1986,” Mandel says of the non-profit international professional organization, “and the media landscape has gone through enormous changes, worldwide, since then. We try to keep up, hoping to be as creative as the music that inspires us. Chicago’s got a vibrant and diverse scene that’s it’s a joy to explore, but the speakers at the Summit are those who observe it professionally. They’ll talk about the inner workings, current issues and potentials of music journalism – highlighting current realities, for those who might want to pursue it, and those already in the mix.”

The Jazz Institute of Chicago, which curates the Chicago Jazz Festival, operates from a mission to nurture and perpetuate jazz in all its forms. Writers, broadcasters and photographers including Harriet Choice and Don DeMichael (both founders), J. B. Figi, Bill King, Terry Martin, Kent Richmond and Neil Tesser have served on its board; broadcasters Richard Steele, Leslie Keros, and writer John McDonough have been among panelists on the JIC’s 2019 “Digging Our Roots” listening sessions. The Institute endorses the Creative Music Media Summit as an opportunity to convene current and potential communicators-on-contemporary music.

What do you get when you mix two different musicians from totally different backgrounds who are nearly 70 years apart in age? The result is “Your Wish Is My Command” – a high energy album that connects the dots between swing and punk rock. This unexpected pair consists of Sol Yaged: a 95-year old NYC jazz legend teaming up with Tino Valpa: a 28-year old punk rocker from New Hampshire, vocalist of The Cryptics. Sol Yaged was a Manhattan-based clarinetist whose legendary career included performing with every 1940’s & 50’s big band great you can think of. He started playing clarinet in 1935 and played up until his death at 96 years old in May 2019. Tino Valpa had befriended Sol in recent years which led to the Pine Hill Records reissue of Sol’s debut album “It Might As Well Be Swing” from 1956. It was then that Tino approached Sol about recording some new material, to which Sol immediately accepted and even came up with the title “Your Wish Is My Command.” Within days Tino wrote the songs, recorded the basic tracks then headed down to NYC to record Sol’s parts. The first four tracks are the new recordings followed by a live set from 1972 that was sitting around on a reel-to-reel in Sol’s apartment. They decided to get it converted and it came out great. You get to hear Sol in his prime with a top notch backing band, ripping through tracks like “The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise” at blazing punk rock speeds. This album also features Harry Sheppard, Sol’s vibraphonist that played with him in the 1950’s who gladly partook in this recording. At 90 years old Harry is still performing regularly to this day. This album is the ONLY other Sol Yaged studio recording besides his 1956 debut album “It Might As Well Be Swing” – making it 63 yearsbetween albums! What?! How?! Sol Yaged will always be remembered for his true passion for music. A man that played clarinet 7 nights a week and earned his entire living doing what he loves. What Sol, Harry & Tino did together represents total unity, friendship, and similarity between musicians – regardless of background. The album is here… enjoy it! The pressing is very limited: 200 LPs (100 white, 100 blue) and 300 CDs.

This song was Sol’s #1 most requested song by fans live that he never had the chance to record on any of his previous records. The modern take of this classic song features all the standard rhythm sections, guitar, a horn section, topped off with vibraphone by fellow old school NYC jazz legend Harry Sheppard. ALBUM RELEASE
Jazz, swing, big band, and punk rock enthusiasts… here’s something you don’t see every day: It’s called “Your Wish Is My Command” by Sol Yaged And Tino Valpa. Tino & Sol became friends in recent years which led to the creation and record of Sol’s final album. This is the first studio album Sol Yaged has been involved with since 1956, making it 63 years between albums…….. don’t ever say it’s too late! On a couple weekend afternoons in 2018 Sol recorded his parts in his Manhattan apartment with Tino. The album contains 4 studio tracks and 6 live tracks from 1972, all previously unreleased. Sol Yaged left this world on May 11th, 2019 but he left us with his talent and his spirit even in the final stages of life. It goes to show you can always create something positive and worthwhile no matter how old you are, no matter what the situation. In his honor the band will celebrate with a Sol Yaged memorial show on September 7th, 2019 in Kittery, Maine. It will be a record release show led by Tino Valpa and backed up by the additional musicians that played on this album.

Pianist Kerry Politzer
Releases Her Sixth Jazz Album
“Diagonal: A Tribute to Durval Ferreira”

shem.gif

Pianist Kerry Politzer releases her sixth jazz album, a modern tribute to the late Brazilian jazz guitarist/composer Durval Ferreira. She has assembled a fine cast of sidemen in this endeavor: John Nastos (Dianne Schuur, Esperanza Spalding) on saxophone, flute, and clarinet; noted pianist George Colligan, here on drums; Seattle bassist Tim Carey (Jovino Santos Neto); Ben Graves on acoustic and electric guitars; and Simon Lucas on Brazilian percussion. The album features eight arrangements of Ferreira’s compositions and three originals inspired by his bebop-meets-bossa style.

This year, Politzer received a Regional Arts and Culture Council grant from the City of Portland to explore Ferreira’s music. After transcribing 30 of his compositions from the bossa nova era, the pianist chose eight beloved melodies made famous by Sarah Vaughan, Sergio Mendes, Leny Andrade, and others. “Batida Diferente” is transformed into an uptempo 7/8 whirlwind, while a reharmonized “The Day It Rained” adds a lovely flute part as well as Politzer’s hushed vocals. “Chorinho No. 2,” a contrafact written to Ferreira’s original “Chorinho No. 1,” features Nastos’ tuneful clarinet playing. Politzer’s “O Gato” is a beboppy tour-de-force that references Ferreira’s nickname (he performed with the group Os Gatos and had piercing “cat eyes”). The album closes with one of Ferreira’s most popular Brazilian jazz compositions, “Estamos Aí.”

Politzer has been enamored of Brazilian music ever since studying with Luciana Souza at the New England Conservatory of Music in the mid-1990’s. The pianist went on to continue her rhythmic studies with New York percussionist Vanderlei Pereira. She currently heads Bossa PDX, a Portland-based band that pays tribute to the masters of the bossa nova era.

ALBUM RELEASE
Jazz, swing, big band, and punk rock enthusiasts… here’s something you don’t see every day: It’s called “Your Wish Is My Command” by Sol Yaged And Tino Valpa.

IN CONCERT, DENNY ZEITLIN
RE-IMAGINES COMPOSITIONS
MILES DAVIS WROTE,

MAY HAVE APPROPRIATED, OR WAS ASSOCIATED WITH
OVER HIS LONG CAREER

shem.gif
Sunnyside Records SSC 1553

for Denny Zeitlin Solo Piano: Remembering Miles
CRITICAL ACCLAIM

“On Remembering Miles Denny Zeitlin takes all the measures of what makes pianism great and relocates them to another rarefied realm… There is nothing contrived or attention-seeking about his approach… His traversal of this music is instantly spellbinding for all the right reasons… Everywhere Mr. Zeitlin strikes a compelling balance between volatility and elegance, while maintaining the intuitive sensibility of a jazz artist.” Raul da Gama, JazzdaGama

“…Remembering Miles represents the culmination of six decades of recorded jazz by Denny Zeitlin and you have to listen to it to truly understand how special it is in terms of the gift of the experience and genius that Denny brings to his music. Few pianists could have rendered the music of Miles Davis in a solo piano setting with such discrimination and heartfelt sincerity.”  Steven Cerra, Jazzprofiles.blogspot

“… An extraordinary recording career that began in 1963…with [this 2019 CD] Zeitlin taking these selected tunes on–and interpreting liberally–with just his piano and his own idiosyncratic reimaginings, you get an essence of two souls… Zeitlin is always startlingly virtuosic, and he is blessed with freewheeling improvisational elasticity… One of the most compelling and beautiful albums of Denny Zeitlin’s career.”
Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz

“… Denny’s solo piano approach here is more to use the songs almost like loose backdrops for sonic poetry–these incredibly complex lines on the piano that are at once free and melodic, modern and meaningful… The album is as revolutionary as anything the pianist recorded decades back…” DustyGroove

“… By the end of Zeitlin’s recital, it is fair to marvel at the range of Davis’s music, of course, but also at the versatility of this pianist, a master of so many styles and approaches… Denny Zeitlin is a musician who never got stuck in one way of approaching the art…” Will Layman, PopMatters

“… Doing more with a solo piano than anyone else can, Zeitlin serves as an explosive and revelatory meeting of the minds that finds the octogenarian playing with the verve and smarts of a 20-year-old with an old soul. Another in a series of penultimate dates from the master.” Chris Spector, MidwestRecord

“… By reaping the best of both worlds and respecting Miles’ original portrayals of his songs and moving them forward with imaginative, dynamically fresh takes, Denny Zeitlin pays ultimate homage to Miles Davis. The Prince of Darkness was a master at recognizing other people’s good ideas and making them great; Zeitlin does the same while he’s Remembering Miles.”  S. Victor Aaron, SomethingElseReviews

“… Denny Zeitlin is a master. His love for this music comes shining through the notes he plays and how he rearranges the song so you hear them  anew… Splendid recording, sweet sound, and great music…”  Richard B. Kamins, StepTempest.blogspot

“Arriving on the jazz scene in the mid-60s while simultaneously practicing and teaching psychiatry, pianist Denny Zeitlin has consistently conducted his musical career on multiple tracks. He has played postbop as well as free improv, veered between electric and acoustic settings, drawn from classical composition and fusion, and played solo when he wasn’t leading duos, trios, or larger ensembles…all those influences resonate through the music heard on Remembering Miles…it all adds up to an intriguing collection of Miles’ musical stories, familiar but given refreshing new spins.”
Philip Booth, JazzTimes

“one of our most lyrical pianists, Denny Zeitlin delivers a tour de force solo performance, interpreting songs from the wide ranging Miles Davis songbook… Like his previous interpretation of Wayne Shorter material, this one’s a real treat and a moving tribute to an artist that bridged wide gaps…”  George W. Harris, JazzWeekly

“… Zeitlin’s a master at reconstructing melody, mood, and movement, making a meal out of nuance in the great artists of the times– himself included… Denny Zeitlin puts a lot of his own adventurous, thought-provoking spirit into each and every weird and wonderful note for quite a show, and quite an album.” Carol Banks Weber, FestivalPeak

“…[Remembering Miles] is one of Zeitlin’s finest and best solo piano releases and is a must-listen… Pianist Denny Zeitlin is a master of solo performance. His solo piano concerts are always memorable and not to be missed…”
Doug Simpson, Audiophile Audition (AudAud)

Deana Martin is a world-class entertainer who is equally comfortable with a celebrated symphony, at a legendary concert hall or on an intimate cabaret stage with a swinging jazz quintet. She’s a New York Times best-selling author, a gifted actor, a vocalist of incredible depth and passion and a licensed pilot. When talent is part of the family pedigree it can sometimes be difficult for an artist to forge an individual path, Deana Martin has successfully navigated that tricky terrain.

Deana’s latest album, Swing Street is a collection of songs which capture the essence of this consummate entertainer who is equally at ease performing Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia On My Mind,” as she is singing Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” Swing Street was recorded at Capitol Records Studio A in Hollywood and features a cast of preeminent LA musicians under the batons of legendary arranger and conductor Patrick Williams and Chris Walden. On this, her fifth album release, Deana also pays tribute to three men who helped guide and encourage her performing career: Uncles Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra and, most certainly, her Dad, Dean Martin. The album is an elegant mix of jazz and blues inspired songs.

Deana’s smash 2013 release, Destination Moon, offers her distinctive take on jazz and pop classics, including the song “True Love,” a duet with her father. “To record that song with my Dad,” says Deana, “was an incredible highlight in my life and another dream come true.  When we listened to the playback I was thrilled to hear how beautifully our voices blended together. It’s an unbelievable memory that I’ll carry with me forever.”

Destination Moon followed Deana’s 2006 top ten hit CD Memories Are Made Of This, her acclaimed holiday collection, White Christmas, and Volare, which entered Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums chart at No. 22 and Billboard’s Heatseeker chart at No. 7.

In concert, Deana brings her best-selling recorded repertoire to life with an engaging stage show that keeps the busy entertainer on the road 280 days a year, performing in a variety of venues from major Las Vegas showrooms to intimate jazz clubs to symphony halls, accompanied by some of the country’s most prestigious orchestras.

Among the projects she is most passionate about these days, is seeing her best-selling book, Memories Are Made of This: Dean Martin Through His Daughters Eyes, become a movie. Joe Mantegna is slated to direct the film with Jennifer Love Hewitt set to star as Deana. Actress/writer Bonnie Hunt is writing the screenplay. Speaking of her Dad, Deana says, “My dad would always say ‘Deana, when you dream, dream big, because dreams do come true. There’s nothing you can’t do, honey, if you really set your mind to it and work hard.’ And that’s exactly what I do, because knowing that he believed in me has always given me the strength and determination to shoot for the moon!”

Armed with an abundance of talent, a dedicated work ethic and a buoyant personality, Deana was determined to step out from her famous father’s shadow and launch her own successful entertainment career. Deana received her formal education from Dartington College of Arts in the United Kingdom.  She has amassed a wealth of stage experience including roles in Romeo & Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Six Rms Riv Vu and The Tunnel of Love. Her first major break was in the National Touring Company of Neil Simon’s play, The Star Spangled Girl with Jimmy Boyd and George Hamilton.

Deana’s acting career expanded into film with the 1968 western “Young Billy Young” co-starring Robert Mitchum and Angie Dickinson.  Her movie career continued with staring roles in “Strangers at Sunrise” with George Montgomery and “A Voice in the Night” with Vitto Scotti.  In addition to her work as an actress, Deana also signed a contract with Reprise Records and scored hits singles with the “Girl of the Month Club” and “When He Remembers Me” produced by Lee Hazelwood.

Deana has a beautiful, evocative voice that brings out the best in a song and she puts that amazing set of pipes to good use on her new album, Swing Street. “We recorded in Studio A at Capitol Records, the same room my Dad and so many other music legends recorded. You can feel the electricity in the air the moment you walk into that room.”

Returning to the famed Studio A as an artist in her own right is special to Deana. “When I was a very young girl, I remember sitting in Studio A with my mom, watching my dad record “Memories Are Made of This,” which became his very first #1 hit. Those are memories indeed that I will never forget.”

Swing Street was produced by Deana’s husband John Griffeth. The orchestra is a who’s who of the best Hollywood musicians. Among them are: Gene Cipriano, Bob Sheppard, Don Shelton, Tre Henry, Sal Lozano, Wayne Bergeron, Bob McChesney, Andy Martin, Ray Brinker, Jason Lee and Deana’s pianist and music director, Rick Krive.

Whether writing a bestselling memoir, touring the world or working on a new record, Deana Martin approaches every endeavor with the same commitment to excellence and passion. She could easily rest on her laurels, but that’s not something she ever plans to do. “I love entertaining people,” she says. “It’s what I was born to do.”

Deana and her husband John Griffeth divide their time between Beverly Hills, CA and Branson, MO.

M’Boom was the brainchild of Max Roach, the late percussionist, visionary, and one of the seminal innovators of modern jazz. In 1970, Roach gathered six notable drummers – percussionists to explore and compose for the myriad instruments in the percussion family and named the group “M’Boom.” M’Boom or (Bwoom), comes from the mythology of the people of Kuba (now the Democratic Republic of Congo, and can also be found in regions of eastern Nigeria). The deity of M’Boom is symbolized by “Royal Masks”, known as M’Boom, or Bwoom masks.

The M’Boom was also a governing council of elders existing in the various provincial tribes and regions of that part of Africa.

The concept of drummer collectives is not new; various percussion troupes exist all over the world; i.e. Dou, Dou Mtu-Senegal; Koto Drummers of Japan; French Six of Europe, etc. M’Boom Re-Percussion grew out of “Rise and Fly”. “Rise and Fly” probably existed during the very beginnings of professional Jazz bands and orchestras; four to five notable drummers would perform first individually with a four to five piece “back-up” band; then they would collectively take the stage with the “back-up” band in a kind of “drum battle” finale; an absolute “killing”, crowd pleasing show. I personally witnessed several Gretsch Drum Nites at Birdland in the late 1950’s, and early 1960’s.

When Max Roach called me in the summer of 1970, I initially thought that we were going to pursue the “Rise and Fly” concept; but Max said, “No, I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to explore percussion.”

Percussion has the widest range of timbre (tone color) than any family of instruments associated with ensembles in western culture, i.e. wider than (reeds) in a jazz orchestra, wood winds, brass or strings in a modern Symphonic Orchestra.

Percussion directly connects to “world music” as it embodies instruments, musical forms and elements from Africa, Caribbean, Asia, South America, and Europe.

Beginning in September 1970 and continuing through September 1971, M’Boom rehearsed every Saturday discovering and learning all categories and combinations of percussion. In the summer of 1972, M’Boom embarked on its first European tour. Subsequent tours followed; France, Belgium, Netherlands in 1973; Germany in 1974; Italy, Spain and France in 1977 and 1978. The 1980’s was particularly productive period with tours continuing to Europe and college campuses and beginning of recording activity; the first album entitled M’Boom Re-Percussion, RVC-RVJ6001, in 1980; M’Boom, Columbia Records-1981; College Soul Note 1984; M’Boom live at S.O.B.s Mesa Blue Moon-1992; After Max Roach’s death in 2007, and the death of three other members, Joe Chambers, Warren Smith and Ray Mantilla vowed to fulfill the vision originally planned for M’Boom.

Joe Chambers has worked with some of the most influential jazz figures of the last several decades and is a recognized performer and composer whose works have been performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. As a sideman and leader, Chambers has recorded more than 500 albums and CDs. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Andrew Hill and many more. Chamber’s credits include Hubbard’s “Breaking Point,” Hutcherson’s “Components,” Shorter’s “Schizophrenia.” and “Etcetera,” Hill’s “Compulsion,” and Tyner’s “Tender Moments,” as well as Archie Shepp’s “New Thing at Newport,” Charles Mingus’ “Like a Bird,” Chick Corea’s “Tones for Joan’s Bones,” and many others. Chambers’ compositions have been covered by Hutcherson, Hubbard and M’Boom; he has also contributed to soundtracks for several Spike Lee films, including “Mo’ Better Blues.” Chambers is the first Thomas S. Kenan Distinguished

Professor of Jazz in Department of Music at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. His most recent recording is “Joe Chambers moving pictures orchestra live” of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York City, Savant 2120, released May 2012 and was nominated for a Grammy in 2013.

Ray Mantilla entered the international spotlight in 1960 with flutist Herbie Mann, and later embarked on a series of national tours with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in Europe and Japan. In 1977, Mantilla became the first North American Latin musician to play in Cuba since the Cuban Revolution. Mantilla has recorded on more than 200 albums. Some of his credits include Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Ray Barretto, Gato Barbieri, Sonny Stitt, Bobby Watson, Herbie Mann, Tito Puente, Cedar Walton, and Freddie Hubbard. In 2003, Mantilla signed with Savant Records and released his first record for the label, “Man-TiYa.”

Warren I. Smith has performed extensively in the studio and on Broadway. As the 1960’s and 70’s progressed, Smith found himself working amid a flourishing mass of creative personalities in the Motown music scene, empowering his already articulate voice within the jazz community; live performances, recordings, and tours with figures like Dionne Warwick, Nat King Cole, Harry Belfonte, and Aretha Franklin all became part of Smith’s credits through 1978. Concurrently, Smith began teaching at Adelphi University in 1969 and alter at the State University of New York in Old Westbury from 1971-1996. He has also recorded with Quincy Jones, Barbara McNair, Barbra Streisand, Sammy Davis Jr., Gil Evans, Johnny Richards, and Nancy Wilson. He has performed on Broadway in “Lena Horne, the Lady and her Music,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “Guys and Dolls.” He has remained a prominent percussionist and drummer within the jazz world.

Bobby Sanabria is an American drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, educator of Puerto Rican descent who specializes in jazz and Latin jazz. An 8X Grammy nominee as a leader, he is the musical director of Quarteto Aché, Sexteto Ibiano, Ascensión, and his Multiverse Big Band. Sanabria is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. Seven of Sanabria’s albums have been nominated for a Grammy Award: Afro-Cuban Dream: Live & In Clave!!! (2000), 50 Years of Mambo – A Tribute To Damaso Prado (2003), Big Band Urban Folktales (2007) Kenya Revisited Live!!! (2009), Tito Puente Masterworks Live!!! (2011), Multiverse – nominated for two Grammys (2012), West Side Story Reimagined (2018).

This presentation attempts to expand upon M’Boom’s initial concept of a single instrument family to collaboration with strings (string quartet, bassist), reeds (saxophone and flute player), and vocalist.

Mavis Swan Poole

Crowned “Little Ella” by legendary tromobonist Curtis Fuller, award winning vocalist/composer/lyricist Mavis “SWAN” Poole is generating quite a buzz on the music scene. Swan is graced with an unrivaled brilliance of shattering barriers with her rich and smoky sound, and effortlessly amalgamates jazz, R&B, soul, funk and hip-hop. This sassy, soulful, fiery SongBird is often compared to vocalists like Erykah Badu, Ella Fitzgerald, Jill Scott, Dinah Washington, and Abbey Lincoln.

Moving Pictures Orchestra Under the Directorship of Brad Linde

The members are past and current members of the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra (organized by Brad Linde), as well as some of the best of musicians in Washington, D.C – including Allyn Johnson (piano), Herman Burney (bass), and Brian Settles (tenor saxophone).

Yimba Rudo is the self-titled recording debut by a trio consisting of vibraphonist-percussionist Kevin Norton, bassist Steve LaSpina and drummer-percussionist Jim Pugliese. “Yimba Rudo” (which means “Sing Love” in Zimbabwe’s Shona language) is an adventurous yet accessible avant-garde jazz group that displays the influence of African rhythms and World Music. During the thought-provoking set by the chamber jazz trio, Yimba Rudo explores seven originals by Norton, four from Pugliese and a pair by LaSpina. Each of the musicians has their opportunities to be in the lead in the democratic group.

Among the highlights are “Reconcile The Classical View” (which has a sly bass pattern behind the vibes solo), the percussive theme and variety of sounds of “Toronto,” the stormy interplay by bass and drums on “Moonstruck,” several introspective ballads (including “Winter Retreat,” a gloomy “The Faustian Bargain,” and “Tearing Down Walls”), and the catchy “Walking The Dogma.” Utilizing both improvised and worked-out ensembles, the trio thinks as one, following each other’s ideas spontaneously and creating their own style of music.

Each of the members of Yimba Rudo has a long and impressive resume. Kevin Norton has performed with everyone from Anthony Braxton to Milt Hinton including Fred Frith, Scott Robinson, John Zorn, Connie Crothers and Paul Dunmall. He founded the Barking Hoop label (which is releasing Yimba Rudo) in 1999.

James Pugliese has ranged from adventurous jazz and rock to experimental music in his career, appearing on over 90 CDs. He has performed with the New York City Ballet and in the New York Philharmonic Horizon Series, recorded the music of Edgar Varese and Charles Wuorinen when he was 18, and among his diverse associations have been John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Bobby Previte, John Cage, and Philip Glass.

Steve LaSpina has been an important bassist on the New York jazz scene for over three decades. Along the way he has worked with such greats as Benny Carter, Chet Baker, Marian McPartland, the Mel Lewis Orchestra, Stan Getz, Phil Woods, Jim Hall, Carmen McRae, Randy Brecker and countless others in the who’s who of jazz.

All three of the musicians have also worked and recorded as leaders. Now, as they combine their skills as Yimba Rudo, they are creating fresh new music that deserves a close listen.

Jazz singer Rebecca DuMaine releases Chez Nous, a program with 14 superior standards that are given swinging and infectious treatments.

Rebecca DuMaine has a beautiful tone, impeccable articulation, swinging phrasing that finds her placing every note in the perfect spot, and an inviting musical personality. On her newest Summit release, Chez Nous, the jazz singer is joined by pianist Dave Miller (her father), bassist Chuck Bennett, drummer Bill Belasco and, on eight of the 14 selections, guitarist Brad Buethe.  With Miller contributing colorful solos sometimes reminiscent of George Shearing, Buethe adding fire, versatility and creative ideas on guitar, and Bennett and Belasco offering a solid foundation, Rebecca DuMaine has the perfect group for her warm vocalizing.

The wide-ranging program is filled with highlights. The playful “When In Rome” (inspired by Blossom Dearie) begins the set on a joyful note. Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “So Danco Samba,” which has Ms. DuMaine singing in Portuguese, is followed by a surprising medium-tempo version of “I’ve Never Been In Love Before” (normally performed as a ballad), a cooking rendition of the ironic “Everything I’ve Got Belongs To You,” Rebecca singing “ChezMoi” is French, and “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was” which includes the rarely-heard verse. A Latinized version of “Tangerine, ” an emotional rendition of “Yesterday” (featuring a father-daughter duet) and the happy 1930s swing tune “You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me” precede a soulful revival of Grover Washington’s “Just The Two Of Us,” the optimistic “Give Me The Simple Life,” a transformation of the waltz “Alice In Wonderland” into a swinger in 4/4 time, and the obscure Rodgers & Hart song “Do It The Hard Way.” The memorable program concludes with Rebecca singing in both French and English on “Que Reste-t-il/I Wish You Love.”

Rebecca DuMaine was raised in the San Francisco Bay area where her father Dave Miller has led his trio since the 1970s. Although she always loved to sing, her first career was as an actress on stage in New York City and regionally, as well as in commercials and voice-overs. Over time she found that she preferred singing jazz over musical theater. Since moving back to Northern California in 2010, Rebecca has worked regularly with her father’s trio, recording four CDs (Deed I Do, Better Than Anything, The Consequence Of You and Happy Madness) prior to Chez Nous.

Rebecca DuMaine, who consistently digs into the meanings behind the lyrics, has the ability to make even the most familiar song her own. Chez Nous is a major step forward in her career.

INKY DoT MEDIA
Announces the 45-rpm Red Vinyl EP release—

Steve Tintweiss Spacelight Band
“Whistle Stop Tour” b/w “Ash Dung Blues”

IDM 2018 EP001

shem.gif

This record inaugurates the INKY DoT MEDIA imprint, launched to share the contents of Tintweiss’s voluminous recording archive; moreover, IDM 001 is the first officially published recording of bassist Steve Tintweiss as composer or bandleader.

The Steve Tintweiss Spacelight Band: guest artist Byard Lancaster (alto saxophone);
Ric Frank (tenor saxophone); Steve Tintweiss (double bass, composer, leader);
Lou Grassi (drums);

On side A: Rowan Storm (vocals and doumbek drums); whistling by Tintweiss and ensemble.

Recorded Labor Day, September 7, 1992 at Forest Park Bandshell, Queens NY City.

Tintweiss founded the Spacelight Band in 1976 as a flagship ensemble for showcasing his music. Like all of his efforts, this ensemble was dedicated to performing his unique compositions—both newly composed works and the durable staples of his catalog of original music and lyrics, in the tradition of modern jazz with modern poetic lyrics. The name, band, and concept continued with minor personnel changes into the 21st Century. These 1992 tracks are among the best versions of two standout originals, as selected by composer Tintweiss, who produced the performance and this release.

Best known internationally as bassist on the final Albert Ayler live recordings in France at the Maeght Foundation, and numerous pioneering ESP-Disk’ albums including the Patty Waters Sings rendition of “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair”, Steve Tintweiss now introduces on this recording his activities as iconic free-form jazz artist, composer, bandleader and producer of avant-garde music concerts in the greater New York City area over the past 55 years.

Since the mid-1960s, Steve Tintweiss has played bass with Albert Ayler, Sam Rivers, Gato Barbieri, Patty Waters, Perry Robinson, Byard Lancaster, Burton Greene, and many other legendary jazz artists. In the very active musical ferment of the Sixties, he appeared throughout the northeast with the Burton Greene Quartet, Ms. Waters, the Uni Trio, and in the panoply of loft sessions, rehearsals, radio broadcasts, jams, benefits—from Tompkins Square Park to Woodstock, New York arts venues. He played bass with Van Morrison in multiple rehearsals for a pending Bert Berns produced Bang recording session to establish Van’s solo career in the US.

A graduate of Queens College, Steve studied with bassists Steve Swallow, Gary Peacock, and David Izenzon. Formal studies in electronic music composition with Hubert Howe and John Watts, as well as jazz arranging with John Carisi, enhanced his musical style.

Tintweiss’s own bands began with the Purple Why in 1966, delivering his tunes as played and sung with the free flow of Jazz improvisation and the raw energy of psychedelic rock. Forthcoming releases in 2019 will illuminate the whole breadth of that group: They haunted Town Hall, St. Mark’s Church, Studio We, the Village, Lincoln Center Bandshell, Peace Ship, public radio, libraries and Forest Park Bandshell in Queens, helping to stake out the turf that was later declared Loft Jazz by the New York Musicians Organization in 1972. By the mid-Seventies, those early groups gave way to the Spacelight Band as the major vehicle for his music.

He founded the New York Free Music non-profit association in 1969 and has received grants from New York State Council on the Arts, Poets & Writers, Meet the Composer, AT&T, and Queens Council on the Arts.

As Chairman/Founder, Steve produced concerts that presented a wide range of styles, including jazz, blues, rock, punk (featuring early Blondie performances in Forest Park), classical, dance, and poetry, in public programs emphasizing cutting-edge avant-garde styles.

Mr. Tintweiss was selected to be String Coordinator and Arts Administrator for Queens Symphony Orchestra CETA Artists Program in 1979 (he managed a string quartet, a brass quintet and a woodwind quintet), which presented 540 concerts, workshops and open rehearsals in 53 weeks of existence. Steve was the bass player for Albert Ayler’s final tour at Maeght Foundation which resulted in a 1970 French Grand Prix du Disque for best album, In/Memoriam, Swing Journal Silver Award 1971 in Japan, and a documentary movie of the event by Jean-Michel Meurice titled Albert Ayler, Le Dernier Concert (France 1970). He continues to expand his music production activities as an entrepreneur and archivist—exploring the realm of new media technology including virtual reality high-definition audio, video, and multimedia.

RE-IMAGINES COMPOSITIONS
MILES DAVIS WROTE,

OVER HIS LONG CAREER

Back in Baby’s Arms – A Chicago Tribute to Patsy Cline featuring Harmonica Maestro Howard Levy
with Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas

Chicago’s Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas has a new single out for summer, a tribute to the great Patsy Cline with an updated, feisty cover of  “Back in Baby’s Arms”.   The band has been making history as Chicago’s most notorious and innovative Western Swing Group, but over the past year they have been busting genres  with a unique Chicago-styled Rockabilly and Retro Country sound, releasing singles that have hit the airwaves on radio stations like BBC Radio, NPR, Dublin FM, WFUV and thousands of other Alternative  based radio stations across the US and Internationally.   Their recent single, a vocal version of the Peter Gunn Theme that was written by Henry Mancini for Sarah Vaughan, crossed over from Alternative to Jazz and Blues radio stations featuring a boisterous horn section with Chicago sax maestro Eric Schneider and trombonist Jack Gallagher.   And now the band frolics back to their Retro Country roots with sui generis update of the classic Patsy Cline favorite.

The song opens at a rollicking pace with harmonica maestro Howard Levy of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones  flirting through the first few bars, inviting the listener into the familiar tune but at a faster and more boisterous pace than we are accustomed to.  Neal Alger plays a distorted rockabilly guitar  while drummer Phil Gratteau lays out a combustable tempo that even Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols would be proud of.  Vocalist Solitaire Miles holds the original song down with her Cline-esque  vocal,  keeping the sound nostalgic,  while Levy cavorts around her swing-styled back phrasing,  transforming the song into a romping melee of genres.   Neal Alger has a rockabilly style solo, but remains arioso since Alger is also a jazz guitarist.   In fact  all of the band are veterans of the Chicago Jazz scene, but they have been transforming their styles and sounds over the past year, to create a rockabilly/jazz amalgamation to the delight of many listeners across the globe.

So if you’re looking for a fun and frisky song to play at a party or just jam to in your car,  this single will hit your nostalgic meter at 10 and also get you singing along with the classic  lyrics for an entertaining and lively 3 minutes, and maybe make you want to play it all over again.     – Jean M Reid, Chicago Music Guide.

You can find the song at itunes, Amazon, CD Baby and at their
Bandcamp page

Over 50 years ago, through a freak accident, Slide Hampton lost all of his original hand-written scores for his octet music. This recording features nine tracks of Slide’s octet music transcribed by Frank Basile

“I first had the privilege of working with and getting to know Slide Hampton in 2006 as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. At that time, Slide was the band’s conductor and front-man. I had always known Slide’s place as a member of jazz royalty had been cemented long ago, but being there with him first-hand brought into sharp focus what a true genius he is. His conducting, his trombone playing, and his arranging set the standard for countless musicians to strive for, however futile a task that may be.(Thank you, Slide!)”

VIC JURIS Needs Our Help

shem.gif
On June 14th, 2019, after a week of unexplained fatigue on his gigs, the great jazz guitarist VIC JURIS, one of kindest and most talented musicians in the world, was diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer. He is currently at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ, receiving treatment.

Due to complications, we don’t yet know when Vic will be able to go home, to continue treatment, and work towards recovery, but we’re praying it will be soon.

Kate Baker, Vic’s wife, has informed us that while Vic does have some medical insurance, it only covers part of his needed treatment. It will be a long recovery before he’ll be able to work again so he needs help with his living expenses.

We are reaching out to our great musical community and friends for donations to help Vic through this terrible ordeal.

Most of all…Vic needs our positive loving thoughts and prayers as he travels the difficult road ahead.

Thank you in advance for any words you want to share with Vic and any financial help you would like to offer. Please spread the word.

Vic really needs us…

(Monday, Jun 24th, 2019 – New York City, NY) Following the success of Shapes Of Music, Vol. 1, Statik Link brings us the second installment of his Shapes Of Music series, “Shapes Of Music” Volume 2. Shapes Of Music is an instrumental Soul and Jazz EP series produced by Statik Link. Going back to the basics, the album consists of 10, instrumental tracks featuring live horns, piano, bass, guitars, and vintage synths all played by Statik Link. Recorded through the same equipment used by some of Jazz’s greatest musicians, Statik captures the sound of Soul and Jazz that was popular in the 1970s with a modern twist. Tracks like “Summertime Magic”, and “No Where” feature a $90,000, hand built, Steinway Grand Piano. The trumpet, saxophones, and Drums were recorded with vintage microphones for a tone like no other. Tap play, close your eyes, and visualize the Shapes Of Music.

“I had so much fun creating this album! I hope you enjoy listening to it as much asI did making it.This is the first instrumental project I went into a live studio to record. The goal was to capture the sound of an era of music that has shaped the musical landscape we have today. I studied the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, BadBadNotGood, and Adrian Younge before writing a single note. I think I captured THE sound. What is THE sound? “Shapes Of Music, Vol. 2” fuses together Hip-Hop, Jazz, RnB and Soul to deliver, what I believe, is a modern album with a classic sound like no other. ” - Statik Link

About Statik Link

Hailing from the Midwest, Statik Link, crashed onto the scene in 2014 creating his own lane for his unique sound. A live instrumentalist and producer, Statik Link intricately blurs the line of Jazz, Funk, and Soul while remaining true to his own raw, uncut, gritty sound. Statik Link’s style has been compared to a mixture of artists such as Robert Glasper, J Dilla, Miles Davis, BadBadNotGood, and Kanye West.
