something to enjoy, folks

Richard Tabnik, whom critic Vittorio LoConte called “one of the most original exponents of his instrument in  contemporary jazz”, first heard Lennie Tristano’s music when  he was 7 years old. He studied with Lee Konitz, Hall Overton, Joe Allard and was associated with Connie Crothers for almost 40 years as her student, band member, and associate on New Artists Records.

The legendary jazz pianist Harvey Diamond has graced the Boston area for decades with his music which is at once both deeply intricate and deeply emotional to even the most casual listener. Over the years he has performed across the U.S. and in Europe. A student of Lennie Tristano, he has done concert appearances with NEA Jazz Masters Sheila JordanDave Liebman, and Art Farmer, and also with Charles Neville, Herb Pomeroy, Harvie SJay Clayton, Joe Hunt, Don Alias, Jason PalmerCameron Brown, Marc Johnson, Marcus McLaurine, and many others. He has released his second CD as a leader, Fair Weather, with Cameron Brown. This follows is first CD, The Harvey Diamond Trio. Cameron Brown says of Harvey, Harvey Diamond is a unique and brilliant musician: a pianist’s pianist with a remarkable touch, unimpeachable technique and enormous dynamic range. A creative and unpredictable improvisor, Harvey’s roots go back to Lennie Tristano and Bill Evans, spiced with just a touch of Cecil Taylor. He draws the audience into his world and holds it spellbound.

Saxophonist Richard Tabnik studied with the jazz alto saxophonist Lee Konitz from 1970 to 1972. During the years from 1975 through 1979, he lived in Buffalo, N.Y. and played lead alto sax in Frank Foster’s Big Band at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. He has written for and performed in many capacities in Houston, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, and Providence, Rhode Island. He studied and performed with Connie Crothers from 1980 until her death in 2016, including her quartet CCQt, featuring Connie Crothers on piano, Roger Mancuso on drums, and Sean Smith on bass. His recordings include Duo Dimension with Connie Crothers, Solo JourneyIn the Moment with Carol Tristano and Cameron Brown, and Life at the Core with Andy Fite, Calvin Hill, and Roger Mancuso.

Throughout a career that spans nearly three decades, trumpeter Phil Grenadier has emerged as one of jazz’s most imaginative and innovative players. His two albums as leader, 2000’s Sweet Transients and 2003’s Playful Intentions, have won him copious international acclaim, while his collaborations with a broad array of notable musicians demonstrate the raw talent and adventurousness that led the San Jose Mercury News to call him “a trumpeter of rare fluency and depth.” He has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, George Shearing, Tony Bennett, Carlos Santana, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr., Dionne Warwick, Bob Belden, Richie Beirach, Ethan Iverson, Bill Stewart, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Jeff Ballard, Steve Swallow, Kenny Barron and countless other greats.

Bassist Jon Dreyer is one of Harvey Diamond’s closest collaborators. He also performs regularly with James Merenda, both as a member of his high-energy, jazz-ish band TickleJuice and also in more mainstream jazz settings. He has performed with NEA jazz master Sheila Jordan as well as most of the Boston jazz community, including Jerry Bergonzi, George GarzoneJason PalmerAdam JanjigianYoko Miwa, Frank Wilkins, Dominique Eade, Bob Gullotti, Joe Hunt, Steve Langone, and Austin McMahon.

Drummer Bob Gullotti, leader of the Bob Gullotti Project, is a founding member of the Fringe, with George Garzone and John Lockwood. He has toured worldwide with the Fringe, Eddie Henderson, J.J. Johnson, Joe Lovano, John Patitucci and many others. He appears on over 60 recordings. He has published Modern Drummer and Downbeat. He is a clinician for Zildjian and endorses Eames Drum Co., Zildjian, and Remo Drum Heads.

“Dave we need to complete the Trilogy!” said Stefan Harris as we drove to a gig last summer. We had recorded Eight Track with my working trio of Jared Gold and McClenty Hunter back in 2013 and Eight Track II followed three years later with the great Steve Nelson on vibraphone.  A Trilogy? I didn’t have to be asked twice!

The Eight Track projects have been not only fun, but musically rewarding. Playing these classic melodies from the ’70s has been a great way to connect with people and bring more people to the music, whether they remember the songs or are just discovering them. I enjoy the challenge of finding my way into these tunes by putting my own stamp on them through the arrangements and playing. (Besides, I had an Eight Track player in my van in high school and spent many hours listening to everything from Miles and Coltrane to Santana and Marvin Gaye!)

This time out we tackle Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up”, The Temptations’ “Papa was a Rollin’ Stone”, Steely Dan’s “Pretzel Logic”, and two tunes by Stevie Wonder: “Too High” and Joy Inside My Tears”. The Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun” and Burt Bacharach’s “This Guys In Love” show that a great melody is a great melody no matter the decade. And Stefon does Roy Ayer’s classic “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” proud before we start to wind down with Marvin Gaye’s “After the Dance.” Throughout I have to tip my hat to these outstanding musicians and friends who brought this music to life: Stefan Harris, Jared Gold, McClenty Hunter and Mayra Casales.

In these crazy times, I hope our takes on these classic songs can bring some joy and positivity into the world. The Trilogy is complete – Viva Eight Track!

Dave Stryker

Here’s what people are saying so far:

“Stryker Strikes Again!!” William Johnson KPOV

“Stryker remains as ruggedly stylish and direct as ever… one thing remains true and constant: the strength of the song itself remains paramount. Stryker doesn’t bend the originals into unrecognizable shapes or use the art of the cover as a means for intellectual exercise. He plays the songs in relatively straightforward manners, leaves space for solos, and lets the magic take shape on its own. And that, in a nutshell, is his formula for success when dealing with this terrain. While this may mark the end of Stryker’s Eight Track projects, it’s doubtful that (m)any would complain if a fourth happened to find its way to the marketplace. As fun dates go, these are hard to beat. “ Dan Bilawsky / All About Jazz

“When it comes to ultracool & hip jazz, guitarist Dave Stryker is at the very TOP of the list… what an absolutely fun album. The album opener, “Move on Up“, alone, makes it well worth purchasing the full album. Jared’s organ just KICKS IT OUT on this superb tune!  Stevie Wonder’s “Too High” is one of the best performances of the tune I’ve ever heard. The recording is just flawless.  I give Dave & his superb players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.99 out of 5.” Dick Metcalf, editor, Contemporary Fusion Reviews

“Dave Stryker’s third Baby Boomer covers album is, quite frankly, a can’t-lose proposition. That’s ‘cos the melodies are rich with timeless soul and everyone in the band are veteran masters who can effortlessly kick back and take an easygoing approach that these songs need to make them as engaging in these interpretations as they are with the originals.” S.Victor Aarons / Something Else Reviews

“It’s all in the special sauce.  In which we find guitar man Stryker paying tribute to his youth by hitting it on everything that was playing in your car 45 years ago when we were young and eclectic.  A gift shop record in lesser hands, the set list in impeccable again and the on board jazzbos are enjoying  being there for the trip—all of whom are no slouches either.  Tasty fun that means so much more as Stryker and company dig beneath the commercial veneer for the real deal.“  CHRIS SPECTOR, Editor and Publisher

Doris Day: a great entertainer, not a symbol of repression

Joan Merrill remembers a singer and actress whose work will chime with many jazz fans

By Jazz Journal-June 1, 2019

She never won an Oscar, never won a Grammy. But, except for perhaps Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, no other American entertainer left such an impressive legacy as Doris Day.

She did 39 movies, 600 recordings, which include 18 albums, and five seasons of the sitcom The Doris Day Show, plus television specials. According to Ultimate Movie Rankings, nearly 60% of Day’s movies topped $100 million in domestic gross box office sales. In the 1960s she was the No. 1 box office female star for four years, a record matched only by Shirley Temple. Two of Day’s songs won Oscars: Secret Love from Calamity Jane(1953) and Que Será, Será from The Man Who Knew Too Much(1956).

Day was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, five Golden Globe awards – including the Cecil B. DeMille Award – as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the LA Critics’ Career Achievement Award. She might have been honoured by the Kennedy Center or received an
honorary Oscar if she had wanted them, but she shunned the spotlight and never sought fame.

Her fans, however, thought differently. They thought she deserved these honours and were disappointed she didn’t get them. Will Friedwald, author of A Popular Guide To The Great Jazz And Pop Singers(Pantheon, 2010), said of Day’s singing: “At her very best, she’s worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald, yet she’s never gotten a fraction of their respect”. And renowned film critic Molly Haskell said, “I think Doris Day is the most underrated, underappreciated actress that has ever come out of Hollywood”.

But now, in death, Day is still underappreciated. Obituaries mention how, due to the roles she sometimes played – a virtuous woman resisting the advances of playboys – she symbolized the sexual repression of the 1950s. As if she chose those roles, as if she declared that image for herself. It was a great entertainer who died, not a symbol.

‘Day was perfectly aware that the material given her was often bad,  but she had no control over the matter’
Critics also seem to blame her for the inferiority of some of her songs and movies, as if she had chosen them. Day was perfectly aware that the material given her was often bad, but she had no control over the matter. She gave each project her best effort and should be lauded for that.

Let’s take a closer look at her legacy. Doris Day had parallel careers as movie star and recording artist. Her film career lasted from 1948 to 1968 and her recording contract with Columbia Records from 1947 to 1967. From 1968 to 1973, she appeared in a TV sitcom, The Doris Day Show, which was among the Top 20 in the Nielsen ratings for two straight years. (Her husband and manager Marty Melcher, who died suddenly in 1968, had signed a contract for this show without her knowledge.) And she excelled in each field: recording, movies, and television.

When CBS offered to renew the sitcom, Day declined and moved to Northern California in 1973, spending the rest of her life concentrating on her animal welfare foundation, The Doris Day Animal Foundation. In her animal activism, Day also helped launch World Spay Day, opened a pet-friendly hotel and encouraged people to adopt pets from shelters.

When Day died on 13 May 2019, she hadn’t made a record or a film for almost 50 years. Does her work have lasting value? What exactly is her legacy?

After decades of performing—from her early forays as a blues/folk singer-songwriter in her native Arkansas and Houston during the ‘70s to her deep dive into the music of Brazil and Uruguay to her various excursions into jazz as both pianist and vocalist—Elizabeth Tomboulian has finally stepped forward with her debut as a leader. A wide-ranging collection of tunes reflecting her eclectic tastes in music, Love’s In Need Of Love Today represents Tomboulian’s bluesy roots, her love of bossa nova and jazz along with her enduring belief in the power of music to heal.

“This is my first one as Elizabeth,” she said of her long-overdue debut. “I had recorded with my Latin group, Circo, with wordless vocals, horn unisons and Portuguese. I felt it was time for me to grab the reigns of my creativity and be the decider on a project where I sing songs in English that tell a story.”

Originally conceived as a reaction to the horrific shootings at the Pulse disco in Orlando, Florida in 2016, Love’s In Need Of Love Today is a healing balm for these turbulent times. “I heard that song on the radio after the shooting and immediately thought, ‘This is exactly what we need right now.’” recalled Tomboulian, who cites vocal artists Bobby McFerrin, Rhiannon, Classical soprano Patrice Michaels, Barbara Maier Gustern, and Billy Harper among her many teachers over the years. Her gospel-tinged rendering of that Stevie Wonder classic, replete with strings and uplifting choir, brings home the point in stirring fashion.

Elizabeth’s love of New Orleans music, reflecting her brief stay in the Crescent City in 1980, is evident on a second line re-imagining of the jazzstandard “Exactly Like You,” which features her husband Lee channeling his inner Professor Longhair on piano. Elizabeth adds lyrics to the affecting McCoy Tyner waltz, “For Tomorrow,” which features a potent solo from guest trumpeter Ingrid Jensen. Husband and wife team up on a clever Jackie & Roy-styled mashup of Thelonious Monk’s “Nutty” and the 1933 Broadway musical number “If I Love Again,” a tune later covered by such great singers as Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Dakota Staton and Anita O’Day.

Accompanying herself on piano, Elizabeth delivers an intimate reading of “The Ballad of the Snow Leopard and the Tanqueray Cowboy,” an epic ballad written by Texas poet laureate David R. Rodriguez and later recorded by Lyle Lovett. “That was from my roots,” she explained. “I spent a lot of time in Texas in my youth doing the blues and folk singer-songwriter thing in the vein of Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow.”

More of her roots are represented on a laid back reading of the Bessie Smith blues number “Good Old Wagon,” which has her playing fingerstyle guitar and scatting with earthy abandon. A rapturous solo reading of the jazz standard “I Get Along Without You Very Well” features her penchant for reharmonization as a pianist while showcasing her flawless intonation, clear articulation, natural vibrato and warm, soaring vocal delivery. Her lone original here, the playful “Cheesy,” addresses Elizabeth’s heart for being choosy about relationships. Two other masterful mashups complete this winning debut. “Re: Person I Knew/Time After Time” is a gorgeous marriage of Bill Evans and Cyndi Lauper while the closer adeptly merges Buffalo Springfield’s anthemic “For What It’s Worth” with Joe Zawinul’s 1966 classic for the Cannonball Adderley quintet, “Mercy Mercy Mercy.” Says Elizabeth, “It was really fun to put those two together. And The lyric I wrote to ‘Mercy Mercy Mercy’ kind of crowns the album: ‘We can make a way for every soul to live in peace/hungry children got to eat/everybody’s got to be free/and there is no fear in this whole sphere that love cannot defeat.’ That’s really my purpose for the whole album—to sing and proclaim that love wins.” That kind of affirming statement is one that Elizabeth felt an urgency to make at this point in her career. Her message on Love’s In Need Of Love Today is just what the doctor ordered. — Bill Milkowski

it would be easy to mistakenly assume that parts of improvisations like “Moon” and “Jasmine” were written out. The title track actually was (it’s one of Flick’s), yet the playing is so in character with the composition that the dividing line between reading and improvising all but disappears. . . .There also are some standards in the mix, two of which are sung by Liebowitz. She does a lovely job with the Harry Warren/Al Dubin chestnut “September In the Rain” (which is introduced by a playful rendition of Billy Bauer’s “Marionette”). But it’s her powerfully emotional rendering of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” that really makes the album.
—J.D. Considine, Editor’s Pick, November 2018, Downbeat

A glorious album, exceptionally fascinating, pensive and reflectively poetic . . .
—Ken Cheetham, jazzviews.net

The clarity of the sound, the intelligence of the proposals, the balance between the instruments are the proven qualities of this meeting and the poetry that emanates from this pure line creates an authentic world of sound.
Nicolas Dourlhès, citizenjazz.com

Here’s a very unusual jazz CD. . . . And they are BRILLIANT. . . . It is both a sensual and an intellectual experience. In a strange way, they almost make you feel as if you were looking into their souls or psyches as they play. . . . Their sense of unity is so complete that you’d think they had been playing together for years rather than sporadically. . . . Overall, this is a marvelous recording, and I urge you to listen to it.
—Lynn René Bailey, artmusiclounge.wordpress.com

Flick’s warm and woody sound contains something wild at its heart. . . . A storyteller of expressive power, she maps stories from the heart in elegant lines buzzing with imagination. . . . Liebowitz’s touch—now delicate, now blunt, now muscular, now pensive—captures every nuance of feeling.
—Mel Minter, musically speaking

Full of dark, offbeat, frenetic angles and brighter, lyrical moments of uncommon, melodic grace – sometimes within the same piece — “Malita-Malika” is the fruit of their extraordinary chemistry.
—Jonathan Widran, theJWvibe

There are also two standards (sung with finesse by the pianist) including one paired with a theme of guitarist Billy Bauer, and a composition by Birgitta Flick that gives its title to this beautiful achievement. “Malita-Malika.”

—Jean Buzelin, culturejazz.fr

MALITA-MALIKA was included in Hrayr Attarian’s Top Ten Jazz Recordings in the 2018 NPR JAZZ CRITICS POLL.

Monday Nights” is not only the first studio recording of the Gil Evans Orchestra in over forty years, it’s also offers some of the most audacious and electrifying music of the new millennium. The late Gil Evans was one of the most respected orchestrators in jazz history and his fabled collaborations with Miles Davis, including “Birth of the Cool,” “Sketches of Spain” and “Porgy and Bess,” set the gold standard for modern jazz arranging. Accordingly, Evans played a key role in the development of cool jazz, modal jazz, free jazz and jazz fusion. All of these influences are strikingly present on “Monday Nights,” a particularly contemporary incarnation of Evans’ music. After a string of gigs that started in the late 70s, the Gil Evans Orchestra began a run of Monday night engagements in 1983 at the Greenwich Village club, Sweet Basil, which resulted in a number of successful live recordings by Gil Evans and the Monday Night Orchestra. The gig continued sporadically until 1994. Mr. Evans had a knack for bringing out the best in his groups comprised of first-call New York players including David Sanborn, Alan Rubin and Tom “Bones Malone,” and such musicians as George Adams, Hannibal Marvin Peterson and Howard Johnson. Gil’s sons, trumpeter Miles Evans and his brother Noah are keeping the flame alive with “Hidden Treasures,” a trilogy of recordings of which “Monday Nights” is the first. The concept here, is to feature compositions that the Orchestra played live in the late 70s and early 80s. Forthcoming are “The Classics,” featuring modern renderings of Evans’ original arrangements, including “My Ship,” and “The Meaning of the Blues,” and, the final release in the series, “Gil & Anita,” named for the late jazz icon and his wife. “Subway,” written and arranged by keyboardist Pete Levin opens the album and introduces the imperial command of the ensemble, anchored by drummer Kenwood Dennard. With dynamic twists and turns, and subtle musical shadings, this is one hell of a subway ride. Commanding solos by trombonist Dave Bargeron and tenor saxist Alex Foster, offering some respect for Wayne Shorter, add to the excitement. Trumpeter Miles Evans wrote and arranged “LL Funk” and once again Kenwood Dennard drives the music with a powerful funk beat good for both listening and dancing. With Darryl Jones on bass, special guests’ solos abound: keyboardist Paul Shaffer, even more laid back than usual; the criminally underrated Matthew Garrison and his highly original bass: and Vernon Reid bringing a thick almost heavy metal guitar tip to the track. The icing on the cake is David Mann, who weaves his bluesy, potent alto sax throughout the track. “I Surrender,” written by Delmar Brown and Alex Foster, and arranged by Alex and Charles Blenzig is a musical requiem for a heavyweight. Mr. Brown, a superb keyboardist who played with the Gil Evans Orchestra as well as Pat Martino, passed away in 2017 and “I Surrender” is his tribute. He is also present on several tracks recorded before his passing. A true musical heavyweight, Alex Foster offers another side of his soulful, highly expressive tenor. A very popular composition from the Sweet Basil days, “Groove from the Louvre,” written and arranged by John Clark, features the composer on french horn, trumpeters Shunzo Ohno and then Alex Sipiagin, percussionist Mino Cinelu, who came to prominence with Miles Davis and Weather Report, bass trombonist Dave Taylor. Deft and determined, drummer Dennard anchors the band through the gentle opening, and then the hard edged groove that follows. There’s a regal, totally swinging feel to the track, with superb ensemble work that shows this is more than just a group of soloists, but a real orchestra. “Lunar Eclipse” written by Masabumi Kiuchi and arranged by the master himself, Gil Evans, is evocative and cinematic. An Evans protégé, Gil Goldstein solos here, memorably, amidst a dreamy synthesizer background which follows him through his two solos on the track, the first of which gives away to Mino Cinelu on bongos and then drummer Dennard, raising the musical stakes once again. It’s a heady musical mixture. More of the master on “Moonstruck,” which is short, whimsical and very tasty. Tracking at 1:49, it’s an ensemble feature that’s both intriguing and attention grabbing. The recording closes with “Eleven,” also straight from the source, a Gil Evans composition and arrangement, which originally appeared as “Petits Machins (Little Stuff)on the 1968 Miles Davis recording, Filles de Kilimanjaro. The set closer is a bristling swinger, a fitting capper to this powerful set of absolutely stunning music. The groove is infectious, a potent platform for solos by alto saxophonist Chris Hunter, Charles Blenzig on electric piano and Alex Foster, who returns on tenor and continues to amaze. Gil Evans Lives!

When describing vocalist and arranger Paul Jost, two words come to mind … “passionate” and “storyteller”. To Paul, each lyric offers a story, a message, and a vehicle to convey his own interpretation and message. While Paul is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger, it’s his vocal style that makes him standout. With his reputation as a vocalist growing, Paul has been filling rooms on the New York club scene as well as captivating audiences on festival stages both in the US and Europe.

“Simple Life” is Jost’s follow-up to his successful debut release “Breaking Through” and features his quartet with Jim Ridl-piano, Dean Johnson-bass and Tim Horner on drums. The album also features Joe Locke as special guest on a number of tracks. Paul said, “I was blessed to experience the joy of having these extraordinary musicians and dear friends share both their boundless talent and love in realizing this album”.

Paul went on to say that the album title, “Simple life”, is not just a tune on the album but a thread that is woven throughout. He recalls his father saying, “This whole thing (life) is about common sense. Sometimes the hardest thing about living is just to live – don’t always complicate things. Sometimes you just have to let life come to you”.

The songs included on “Simple Life” not only look back, paying tribute to the tradition, they also look forward reaching outside the traditional boundaries of the genre. However, this album is even more as it documents a part of Paul’s philosophy and vision. On the album Paul takes his hand to a number of standards from the jazz repertoire bringing a fresh approach while at the same time respecting their history and place in the American Songbook. He weaves his way artfully through the verse of “Give Me the Simple Life”,brings his rhythmic skills to Ellington’s “Caravan”and provides us with a heartfelt rendition of “Folks Who Live on the Hill”.

Not one to be limited by genre, Paul also takes two Lennon and McCartney classics “Blackbird”and “With a Little Help from My Friends”to task. “Blackbird” is given an up-tempo swing treatment and forms a perfect opener for the album while “With a Little Help from My Friends” is given a soulful twist with some vocal help from his friends. Paul’s instrumental approach is shown on Sonny Rollins “No Moe”as he scats his way through this bop tune based on rhythm changes. Contrasting this is Paul’s rendition of the traditional folk song “Shenandoah”that shows him doing what he does best, telling a story.

One of Paul’s signature songs at his live gigs is the Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg song “If I Only Had A Brain”from the film “The Wizard of Oz”. This lilting ballad showcases Paul’s lyrical sensibilities and, once again, his art of storytelling.

One track that truly grabs your attention is “Everybody’s Talkin'”by Fred Neil. The song, best known from the classic film “Midnight Cowboy”, becomes a canvas for Paul to paint a picture of a subject close to his heart. Paul’s inspiration came from the news a number of years back of Mark Murphy’s misdiagnosis with Alzheimer’s Disease and the lasting impact this had on him. Paul’s rendition takes a look at the anguish one can only imagine when first realizing they’re losing themselves to this terrible disease.
Bob Dylan fans will enjoy his version of “Girl from the North Country”. With every listening the layers of the onion are pealed back each time displaying a deeper level of understanding of the pathos contained in Dylan’s lyrics.

Paul adds two original compositions to the mix with the waltz “Bela Tristeza”and rounding out the album the poignant commentary on the current state of the world “Livin’ in the Wrong Time”. A perfect track to close on, leaving the listener with food for thought.

With “Simple Life”, Paul has created an album that not only documents this current period in his career but also sets the tone for all that will come. It’s clear when listening to this album that Paul Jost has staked his claim as one of the most innovative vocalists on the scene today.

NEW BOOK:
‘The Musical World of Paul Winter’
by Bob Gluck

shem.gif

Paul Winter has traveled a fascinating path, from a small central Pennsylvania railroad town to an unexpected career as a college jazz musician in Chicago to touring South America at the invitation of the U.S. State Department and playing at the Kennedy White House. He played in Russia, recorded in the Grand Canyon, discovered the music of Brazil, organized a town party for Charles Ives’ birthday, and has made decades of wonderful genre-bending Consort music with his evolving groups of collaborative, talented, and expressive musicians.

In telling the story, Bob Gluck draws upon personal observations of Winter’s concerts and workshops given by band members David Darling and Susan Osborn, and personal interviews with Darling, Osborn, and Jim Scott, who provide deeper insight to supplement the many published interviews given by Winter, Ralph Towner, Glen Moore, Paul McCandless, and Collin Walcott.

Paul Winter also addresses issues about endangered species and environments from a place of love and empathy and his music is aesthetically beautiful and enchanting. He has a gift for melody and he speaks with infectious optimism. Listening to his lilting melodies based on the songs of the humpback whale or the howls of the timber wolf brings tears to the ears of his listeners. It is something one can experience by attending one of his concerts. Winter is able to guide audience members to let go of their inhibitions and howl en masse like a pack of wolves.

This book blends academic scholarship, musical reflection, and captivating narrative. In Gluck’s words, Paul Winter addresses issues about endangered species and environments from a place of love and empathy and his music is aesthetically beautiful and enchanting.

Bob Gluck, pianist, composer, writer, traces Paul Winter’s early career as a jazz musician, his discovery of Brazilian music, his concept of a musical “Consort,” and his engagement with whales and wolves as endangered species. He explores Winter’s ancestral roots in musical spectacle and the evolution of the Winter Solstice Celebration in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

Gluck is the author of two books about the experimental periods of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, both published by the University of Chicago Press. He is professor of music at the University of Albany, New York.

GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN

 May 10, 2019

The Jazz Foundation has received many inquiries over the past 24 hours regarding the legitimacy of the GoFundMe campaign for Kenny Burrell.

We would like to assure anyone concerned about Kenny that this campaign was indeed created by Katherine on his behalf.

Musicians close to Kenny have been in touch with him directly to confirm his situation, and the Jazz Foundation has been in contact with Katherine for months.

We operate with the utmost respect for client privacy and confidentiality, but given the questions that have come up, Katherine has kindly given us permission to share this information.

Kenny and Katherine had been dealing with this situation alone for several years, because, as always, musicians are proud and self-reliant and do things on their own. They did not even contact us to ask for help but were referred by friends.

The Jazz Foundation assessed the case, conferred with other helping organizations, and reviewed documents attesting to the financial need described in the GoFundMe post.

We couldn’t possibly cover the full scope of the need, and other sources of funding were explored, including a GoFundMe campaign, given how successful and lifesaving they have proven for fellow musicians.

As we can see in this outpouring of love for Kenny and Katherine, it has worked.

This is a painful but inspiring example of what we see every day at the Jazz Foundation.

Many of our legends do not have a partner at home to help them. As we see here, even when they do, the Jazz Foundation is needed to give emotional and financial support. This is why the organization exists, and we handle 30 emergency cases every day.

Katherine wished to share these words with everyone who has giventheir kindness and support over the last day:

“Thank you to everyone at the Jazz Foundation and those who have responded with loving thoughts, prayers, and generosity. Kenny and I are overwhelmed by the compassion, support, and love of both friends and people whom we do not know, but revere his music. Even simple acts of caring and prayer are deeply appreciated during this difficult time, but the generosity in others’ hearts is far beyond anything we could have imagined. The outpouring of love and support, as well as the words of admiration and respect he has received through the campaign have tremendously lifted his spirit and touched his heart. It is my greatest joy to see his expressions, including tears, as he realizes he is respected, cherished, and loved beyond his comprehension. It is a deeply moving and humbling experience, challenging though it may be to expose ourselves and ask for help. Our deepest and heartfelt gratitude for your support, love, and light.”

We applaud Kenny and Katherine for the courage it took to share the details of their crisis. It has opened up a world of such goodness and generosity, which they so richly deserve.

My name is Katherine Burrell. I am raising funds for my husband, Kenny Burrell. He is a legendary jazz guitarist who has contributed much to the world of music. Following his 85th birthday concert at Royce Hall, he suffered an accident that led to a two year medical leave. He is still in recovery, on sabbatical, and writing his autobiography, as well as two other books. I am taking care of Kenny at home. His medical expenses exceed our monthly income. Additionally, we were both victims of identity theft and bank fraud, and the bank has refused to return the stolen funds, which totaled more than $60,000. In the process of mismanaging our claim, the bank returned payments I made to creditors, seriously impacting our credit scores. We no longer qualify to rent an apartment or open lines of credit and/or loans. We are also currently in litigation with our HOA which has been costly, such that I have spent almost all of our savings and life insurance policy. We are facing foreclosure and consequent homelessness. I am fearful of homelessness for Kenny’s sake, and terrified of how I will care for him if left without a home. We will have to move out of our apartment in the next 1-2 weeks for demolition, which will include mold remediation, lead abatement, and major construction. None of this will be covered by insurance, and the HOA will pass all of the costs to us. I can’t maintain Kenny’s health and safety in that kind of environment, and have no place to relocate nor the funds to do so. It is my fervent, heartfelt desire to continue to care for Kenny as he deserves given who he is and all that he has given to the world through his music, and the beautiful spirit from which it emanated. It saddens and embarrasses me to desperately need and request help, but it is necessary at this point. If anyone is willing to help us at this time, I would deeply appreciate it, and I will do my best to pay you back in the future. Thank you, and God bless you.

2019 Geneva Music Festival
Features Ann Hampton Callaway, Syndee Winters, Sounds of A&R and More

shem.gif
Geneva, N.Y. – The 2019 Season of the Geneva Music Festival (GMF), to be held May 24 through June 16, will celebrate “Women in Music: Key Players.” Much of the Festival’s programming will represent women’s contributions to music through featured composers or performers, including several jazz artists.

A full schedule including concert details and locations, artist biographies and tickets are available on the festival’s website, www.genevamusicfestival.com.

Broadway star Syndee Winters returns to GMF, this time with songwriter and actress Ann Hampton Callaway for “Bessie, Billie, Ella and Friends,” at the Smith Center for the Arts on Saturday, June 8. They’ll pay tribute to groundbreaking women in jazz, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Jazz and blues singer Melissa Kate will open.

A graduate and recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Five Towns College, Winter’s theatrical accomplishments include Disney’s “The Lion King,” where she made her Broadway debut as “Nala” (a role she recently reprised), “Motown: the Musical” (Mary Wells, Diana Ross), “Pippin” (Leading Player u/s) and “Hamilton: An American Musical” (Angelica, Eliza & Peggy Schuyler). Winters also appeared last year as an “Apostle” in the NBC Live Broadcast of “Jesus Christ Superstar” starring John Legend.

Callaway is one of the leading champions of the Great American Songbook, having made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Voted recently by Broadwayworld.com as “Performer of the Year,” her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television, and in film. Callaway is best known for a Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical “Swing!” and for writing and singing the theme song to the hit TV series “The Nanny.” She is a Platinum Award-winning writer whose songs are featured on seven of Barbra Streisand’s recent CDs. The only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter, she has also written songs with Carole King, Rolf Lovland and Barbara Carroll, to name a few.

Born in New York State, Melissa Kate is a powerful and entertaining singer who now travels the globe with her music and arts. She is a classically trained stage actress who uses the craft of theater to create memorable music concerts in jazz, soul and blues.

Sounds of A&R (April Webb and Randall Haywood) also return with their unique brand of jazz in a concert on June 7, at Geneva’s historic Club 86. The next evening, Sounds of A&R also will make a guest appearance at the “Bessie, Billie, Ella and Friends” concert.

Partners in music and life, Webb and Haywood Randall have come together on their album “Horizon” for a distinct sound that fuses aspects of Contemporary Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Gospel influences. May, the sister of Contemporary Jazz keyboardist Jacob Webb of The JT Project, hails from Newton, Kansas. Her unique vocal approach draws from a wide range of influences from Sarah Vaughan to Ledisi. She sings with a rustic warm tone and strong articulation.

Haywood, a Juilliard graduate, utilizes the trumpet with great emotional expression. His sound continues to look towards the future, while continuously paying homage to the greats that have come before him such as Herb Albert, Miles Davis, Chris Botti, and Chuck Mangione.

On Ancestral Spirits, veteran percussionist Art “Turk” Burton performs colorful Afro-Centric versions of such jazz standards as “Killer Joe,” “A Night In Tunisia” and “Listen Here.”

Burton leads a powerful group that includes saxophonists Ari Brown and Edwin Daugherty, a six-piece rhythm section with drums, congas, timbales and bongos, and singer Maggie Brown.

An adventurous conga and bongo player who has performed in a wide variety of settings during his career (from Dizzy Gillespie to MuhalRichard Abrams), Art “Turk” Burton builds upon the success of his previous CD Spirits: Then & Now with a new set featuring his Afro-Centric jazz versions of beloved jazz songs.

For his exploration of six standards and two originals, Burton is joined by Ari Brown on tenor and soprano-sax (which he sometimes plays at the same time), Edwin Daugherty on alto and soprano, pianist Eddie Beard, bassist Yosef Ben Israel, drummer DushunMosley, Sammie “Cha Cha” Torres on congas, and Luis “Preito” Rosario on timbales. Maggie Brown, the daughter of the late great Oscar Brown Jr., has been developing her own original singing style which can be heard on “A Night In Tunisia” and “Freedom Jazz Dance.”

The opening “Soul Drummers,” one of two originals by Burton, has lyrics by PeresinaBurton and has the percussionists paying tribute (both musical and verbal) to many of the great drummers and percussionist who have been inspiring forces. The other new piece, “Ancestral Spirits,” features fiery interplay between the percussionists and the saxophonists. Burton and his group also reinvigorate such classics as “A Night In Tunisia” (which has some fine scatting by Brown), “Killer Joe,” “Summertime,” “All Blues” and two Eddie Harris songs: “Freedom Jazz Dance” and a particularly exciting version of “Listen Here.”

Art “Turk” Burton, who was originally self-taught on congas and bongos, has worked in his career not only with jazz artists but on pop, r&b, and Latin sessions. A member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (A.A.C.M.) since 1973, Burton has performed with such giants as Dizzy Gillespie, MuhalRichard Abrams, Lester Bowie, Henry Threadgill, Randy Weston, Sonny Stitt, Lou Donaldson, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarmanand Elvin Jones, and has recorded with Nicole Mitchell, VandyHarris, Ari Brown, and the AACM’s Great Black Music Ensemble. Among the groups that he has led are the Congo Square Artistic Ensemble and Conjunto Bembe Percussion Ensemble.

In addition to his teaching, Burton is the author of three books about the little-known role of African Americans in the Old West: Black Gun, Silver Star (The Life and Legend of Frontier Marshall Bass Reeves), Black, Buckskin, and Blue (African American Scouts and Soldiers on the Western Front), and Black, Red and Deadly (Black and Indian Gunfighters of the Indian Territories 1870-1907).

The release of Spirits: Then & Now made listeners aware of Art “Turk” Burton’s importance as a bandleader. The memorable Ancestral Spirits is his latest accomplishment.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Teodross Avery – After the Rain : A Night for Coltrane out May 10th on Tompkins Square Gatefold LP (Ltd Ed 500) / CD/ digital)
Liner Notes by Ben Ratliff

WBGO Premiere by Nate Chinen

In the beginning there was John Coltrane. Growing up in a family that listened to a vast and global array of music, Teodross Avery experienced an epiphany at 13 when he first heard Trane’s epochal harmonic steeplechase “Giant Steps.” Taking up the tenor saxophone, he emerged in the mid-1990s as one of the most powerful young voices on the scene, with two critically hailed releases for GRP/Impulse! Avery’s long and productive journey has taken him down many musical paths, from gigs with jazz legends and hip hop stars to sessions with NEA Jazz Masters and platinum pop albums. With his Tompkins Square label debut After The Rain: A Night for Coltrane, Avery has found his way back home, reasserting himself as a supremely eloquent exponent of the post-Trane jazz continuum. Recorded live at Oakland’s Sound Room, the album is slated for release on May 10, 2019.

“It is a return to my roots,” says Avery, 45, who possesses a huge, brawny tone and a capacious harmonic imagination. “Listening to Trane’s music was my foundation, and this album is definitely a reintroduction to this area of my career. I’ve been busy with a lot of other stuff, but I was always playing acoustic jazz with top level cats. I wasn’t putting out albums. I was on record dates, but not my own albums. This was the perfect opportunity to make my own statement.”

He found an ideal outlet with Tompkins Square. Over its 13 years, the label has released new and reissued recordings by renowned jazz masters such as Calvin Keys, Charles Gayle, Ran Blake, Terry Waldo, Bern Nix, and Giuseppi Logan. The label recently releasedThe 1960 Time Sessions by the Sonny Clark Trio featuring George Duvivier and Max Roach (2LP/2CD set), which received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Album Notes (Ben Ratliff). It was Tompkins Square’s eighth Grammy nomination, and the first for Mr. Ratliff, who also wrote the liner notes for After The Rain.

For the Sound Room concert Avery reconnected with some of the Bay Area’s most formidable improvisers, joining forces with pianist Adam Shulman, Oakland-reared, New York-based drummer Darrell Green, and bassist Jeff Chambers, who played on the Yoshi’s album release gig for his seminal 1996 hip-hop inflected album My Generation.

“I grew up hearing Jeff with Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Ahmad Jamal and other heavyweight players,” Avery says. “He’s one of the greatest bassists around, but after he made the date at Yoshi’s we didn’t play together until about 2014. He was the logical choice, and so was Darrell, who I played with in the Bay Area and New York. I always love his feel. And I’ve played with Adam since the early 2000s when I did gigs with Marcus Shelby.”

With the highly cohesive band Avery delves deeply into Coltrane’s songbook, opening with a brightly burning run through “Blues Minor.” Maintaining a steady level of energy throughout the nine-minute sojourn, the quartet offers a master class in the power of a briskly swinging mid-tempo groove. The set’s longest piece, “Africa,” is also drawn from the classic 1961 album Africa/Brass, Coltrane’s debut release on Impulse! orchestrated by Eric Dolphy and McCoy Tyner. It’s an epic performance that builds to ecstatic heights and then simmers back down with Chambers’ eerie arco bass solo backed by Green’s clackety trap work.

Cal Massey’s Latin-tinged “Bakai” is a piece introduced on the 1957 Prestige album Coltrane, the saxophonist’s first session as a leader (an underrated composer, Massey is due for rediscovery). Opening unaccompanied, Avery hints at the sing-song theme with a series of smeary ascending figures. As the band joins, he’s off, pushing against Green’s deft cymbal work with some extra grit in his tone. Shulman, a sought after arranger and first-call Bay Area accompanist, takes a particularly graceful, soul-steeped solo.

“Coltrane was one of the first records I bought myself, and I’ve been listening to that album ever since,” Avery says. “I liked that 12/8 rhythm. It relates to my mom, with an Ethiopian rhythmic feel. It’s a song that almost no one’s recorded. I felt like it was time.”

Of all the music that Avery explores, Mongo Santamaria’s “Afro Blue” is the piece that Coltrane played most frequently. First released on 1964’s Live at Birdland (Impulse!), the tune also appears on several posthumously released live Trane albums (but interestingly a studio version has never surfaced). Like Coltrane, Avery trades his tenor sax for a soprano and also lays out quickly after stating the theme. The rhythm section steadily ramps up the momentum and when Avery rejoins he’s at full sprint. It’s a cathartic, impassioned performance that leaves no doubt about his prowess on the wily horn.

He follows the thunderous “Afro Blue” with a gorgeous rendition of Coltrane’s ballad “After the Rain.” Back on tenor, he caresses the melody, which unspools over Chambers rumbling bowed bass and Green’s shimmering cymbals. Quietly majestic, it practically begs for another ballad or two, but Avery gets back to burning. He closes the set with a blast of spiritual sustenance, offering an extended take on “Pursuance,” the third movement of Trane’s devotional masterwork A Love Supreme.

“I’ve studied all areas of his music,” Avery says. “I was just trying to take songs that were important to him and important to the real connoisseurs of his music. Africa/Brass was a really important album for him. ‘After the Rain’ isn’t his most popular ballad, but it’s a very beautiful piece and a brilliant composition.”

As Ben Ratliff writes in the album’s liner notes, the band approaches Coltrane’s music with reverence and freedom, revealing themselves in the act of interpreting iconic compositions. “The synthesis achieved here is the result of scholarship…But it is also the result of relaxing an academic mind-set, something that comes later in life—a little bit of forgetting what you’ve learned, or of finding meaning beyond the limited binary thinking of structure/no structure.”

Born July 2, 1973 in Fairfield, California, Avery grew up in Oakland and Vacaville, where he spent most of high school. Looking for more rigorous musical training he attended Berkeley High his senior year played in the school’s award-winning jazz band under director Charles Hamilton (a mentor for future jazz stars such as Joshua Redman, Dayna Stephens and Justin Brown). Wynton Marsalis recognized his oversized talent and purchased him a saxophone. Berklee College of Music made a similar judgment, giving him a full scholarship. At 19, he found another champion in eminent A&R executive Carl Griffin, who signed him to GRP/Impulse Records. His 1994 debut album In Other Words focused on his original compositions, and earned widespread critical praise. Sought out by stars like Aretha Franklin, Betty Carter and Ramsey Lewis, he soaked up head-turning bandstand experiences and still managed to finish college while on the road in 1995.

It’s hard to overstate the impression Avery made when he hit New York. Within a week of moving to the city in 1995 he was playing at the Blue Note with piano legend Cedar Walton’s sextet featuring trumpet great Art Farmer. Over the next few years, he performed and recorded with veteran jazz masters such as Hank Jones, Ben Riley, Harold Mabern, Bobby Watson and Dee Dee Bridgewater, while also working with rising stars like Cyrus Chestnut, Lewis Nash, Donald Harrison, and Roy Hargrove. With the manifesto-like My Generation, a guitar-centric session featuring John Scofield, Peter Bernstein, and Mark Whitfield on alternating tracks, Avery embraced his Ethiopian heritage and the protean power of hip hop (with Black Thought of The Roots rapping on the title track).

While Avery has kept a relatively low profile on the jazz scene over the past two decades, he’s never put down his horn. After touring internationally with Lauryn Hill in the late 1990s, he started recording prolifically as a session musician in New York City, contributing to hit albums by Amy Winehouse, G-Unit All Stars, Joss Stone, and Talib Kweli. Returning to academia, he completed a PhD in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California in 2016, and is now assistant professor of Jazz Studies and Commercial Music at California State University Dominguez Hills in Los Angeles.

Avery started gaining attention again in straight ahead circles as part of a powerhouse tenor sax tandem with Howard Wiley on Hammond B-3 great Doug Carn’s 2015 album My Spirit (Doodlin’ Records). He revealed a different side of his musical personality on 2017’s Post Modern Trap Music (Katalyst Entertainment), a duo collaboration with drum master Marvin “Bugalu” Smith, who has played with the likes of Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, and Chet Baker. In many ways, the project was a primal scream of freedom after years battened down in grad school.

“I had this sense I need to record an album and not be guided by piano and bass,” he says. “I needed to be in the driver’s seat as to where the harmony was going. It was like a release. When I was at USC, everything was very regimented. That’s part of the point of pursuing a doctorate. I needed to clear my intellectual palette.”

The saxophone/drums duo was pioneered of course by John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, and Post Modern Trap Music paved the way for After The Rain. A major addition to his slim but growing discography, the album catapults Avery back into jazz’s top ranks as a fierce and captivating improviser ready to reclaim his vaunted reputation.

Critical Acclaim:

SOLO:

“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.”
        Don Heckman, Los Angeles Time

“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.”
        George Goodman, New York Times

“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.”
        Don Freeman, San Diego Union

“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.”
       Munchner Merkur (Munich)

TRIO (reviews of latest CD with Buster Williams & Matt Wilson, “Wishing On The Moon”):

Denny Zeitlin is not simply a very good pianist.  He is a great one…one of the most highly accomplished musicians writing for and performing on the instrument today…throughout this magnificent record (superbly engineered at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, at Jazz At Lincoln Center) one is continuously impressed at how Mr. Zeitlin is alive to the complex pleasure of contemporary music…and how blessed he is to have two of the most magical players on their instruments…”
       Raul da Gama, Jazzdagama

“…Williams creates giant ripples, Wilson is like unto a force of nature, and Zeitlin storms and swirls without leaving the listener behind, maintaining a (restless) lyricism throughout…Zeitlin is up there in the pantheon with Corea, Tyner, and Herbie Hancock.”
       Mark Keresman, ICONDV

“…Wishing On The Moon represents the Denny Zeitlin Trio at the peak of its powers, on one of those nights when all the gears meshed, and all the stars aligned around that shining moon.”
       Dan McClenaghan, allaboutjazz

“…this newly released album features Denny at his explorative best, taking standards apart and reassembling them with curiosity and daring…”
       Marc Myers, jazzwax

JAZZ JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES 2019 AWARDS NOMINEES

shem.gif
NEW YORK CITY — Finalists for the 24th annual Jazz Awards presented by the Jazz Journalists Association have been announced at www.JJAJazzAwards.org, showing the generational continuity and diversity of talent making music and creating media about today. Elder and younger musicians, first-time nominees and veterans with career-capping works, women in the vanguard as composers, bandleaders and instrumentalists —  some 400 nominees in 39 categories of excellence in jazz music and jazz journalism demonstrate the strength of a creative community.

See the entire list of nominees here: https://www.jjajazzawards.org/p/2019-nominees.htmlThe JJA also has announced 22 Jazz Heroes, being celebrated by local jazz fans in 20 US cities. See Jazz heroes here: https://www.jjajazzawards.org/p/2019-jazz-heroes.html

Nominees are chosen by the votes of the professional journalist members of the Jazz Journalists Association, based on work done in calendar year 2018 (with the exception of Lifetime Achievement Awards categories).

Among Jazz Award ballot highlights: Three unique pianists — Chick Corea (77), Ahmad Jamal (88) and Harold Mabern (83) — as well as bassist Ron Carter (81) and saxophonist Pharoah Sanders (78) — are the Lifetime Achievement in Jazz nominees. All are highly acclaimed, much recorded, widely traveled innovators, composers, improvisers and  ensemble leaders, whose accomplishments define six decades’ of jazz-in-development and fruition.

Jazz Musician of the Year nominees represent a different demographic. Although 85-year-old saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter is nominated, so are electric guitarist Mary Halvorson (39),bassist-bandleader-broadcaster Christian McBride (46) and vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant (29), requiring JJA’s member voters to compare apples to oranges in determining the single most representative musician of calendar year 2018.

That same challenge confronts the JJA’s professional members as they vote in journalism categories, with nominees for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism including Nate Chinen, WBGO director of editorial content and former New York Times critic; Eugene Holley, Jr., a much-published freelancer; Dan Ouellette, an author, columnist and contributor to DownBeat, among other publications; Ben Ratliffe, author and former New York Times critic, and John Szwed, biographer of Sun Ra, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday and Alan Lomax as well as contributor to the Village Voice and emeritus professor at Columbia and Yale universities.

Winners of the 2019 JJA Jazz Awards in all categories, determined by second-round voting by the JJA’s professional journalist members, will be announced at jjajazzawards.orgon May 1, with Awards presentations to be made at recipients’ performances throughout the summer.  For further information about the JJA Jazz Awards or the JJA itself, email jazzawards@jazzjournalists.org If you are a 2019 Nominee, and would like a “badge” to display on your website, click here

What happens when you combine the singular sound of award winning soprano saxophonist & NASA artist Jane Ira Bloom with the technical artistry of legendary audio engineer Jim Anderson and tonmeister Ulrike Schwarz? The surround sound Grammy winning team has upped their game to showcase excerpts from their latest project which features Bloom’s albums “Sixteen Sunsets” “Early Americans” & “Wild Lines” in ground breaking Dolby Atmos at the High End Audio Conference in Munich Germany May 9-12.  The project “Above and Beyond” showcases Bloom’s music the way you’ve never heard it before with the surround sound recording extended into full 360-degree space. The team will preview, perform, and discuss their work of combining the highest standards of artistic and technical collaboration, live and up close as guests of PMC Speakers and Dolby Atmos at the High End audio show.

In early 2019 Jim Anderson & Ulrike Schwarz went into both Skywalker Sound in Northern California to mix in 3D audio and the famous Capitol Studios in Los Angeles to mix Bloom’s recordings in Dolby Atmos. The results are like no other recording you’ve ever heard before.

“We feel that Dolby Atmos and Jane Ira Bloom’s music are a perfect match and when heard with PMC speakers the results are magical. The emotion and beauty of Jane Ira Bloom’s performances gain a new dimention with Dolby Atmos’ immersive sound and PMC.”
-Ulrike Schwarz and Jim Anderson, Anderson Audio New York

“I’ve always been interested in the way sound changes when it moves, whether in inner or outer space. This is technology that I’ve dreamt about but never heard before. How do you describe a sound that feels like it embraces your mind in 360?”
                                                                                                -Jane Ira Bloom

Revealing the resolution and detail of these brand new and priceless releases will be PMC’s flagship model, the fact fenestria, complemented by an array of its Wafer on-wall speakers for the surround and height channels and a selection of its professional subwoofers, mimicking the system at Capitol Studios. Plus, PMC will be presenting selected tracks from trumpeter Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” album.

Jane Ira Bloom’s immersive music will premiere in room F123
at High End Munich 2019, May 9-12.

THE MANY MUSICAL WORLDS
OF RANDY KLEIN

shem.gif
As a pianist/keyboardist, songwriter, educator, author and founder of the Jazzheads Music Group, Randy Klein not only has a long list of accomplishments in several overlapping worlds but is constantly adding new innovations to each area of his musical life.

It is not an understatement to say that Randy Klein keeps busy. Whether composing ambitious new works, playing piano, teaching and lecturing about songwriting, or running the Jazzheads Music Group, his life is a whirlwind of activity.

Born in Jersey City, hometown Fort Lee, New Jersey, he says, “I always played piano, I don’t remember ever not playing music.” I played in many types of ensembles starting at the age of 14, from rock to jazz groups. “When I was 17 or 18, I heard the Ramsey Lewis Trio’s The In Crowd recording and immediately knew that I wanted to be a jazz improviser. The groove and jazz of that recording hooked me. Amazing how one recording turned into a musical life changer, inspiring me to go to study at the Berklee College of Music.” After graduating from Berklee, he taught in John LaPorta’s improvisation program for a couple of years and gained experience working as a sideman, playing keyboards and synthesizers in a variety of groups in addition to accompanying singers on piano. Klein also began writing songs while working with RCA recording artist Ralph Graham. “He was a really wonderful songwriter and I learned a great deal from him about composing songs. I came to songwriting relatively late, in my late twenties, and became obsessed with the process of writing songs. In the first year, I think I wrote 70 or 80 poorly written songs, but I began to learn that songwriting was a cumulatively learned art form. I simply worked it and got to the point where now I am teaching the craft.’

Randy Klein moved to New York City in 1977 and joined R&B Hall of Famer Millie Jackson’s group as a keyboardist and composer. “That was a period when she had many gold records. We performed all over the world including Japan, Kenya, Germany, France, and throughout the Deep South.” He contributed songs to her hit albums and has since written songs for a variety of performers including Sarah Dash, Candi Staton, IRT, Memphis Bleek, JX, Black Sheep, and Lil Kim, Dr. Ticktock, not to mention Sesame Street.

As an award-winning (Emmys and Gold Records) composer, Klein has written in a wide assortment of styles for musical theater, film, television and individual performers. Just to name a few notable assignments, he wrote the score for the documentaries Richard Wright – Black BoyFree To Dance (PBS Great Performances), and Beyond Tara – The Extraordinary Life Of Hattie McDaniels. His work in musical theater includes such shows as Move! (commissioned by Amsterdam’s Royal Theatre Carre’), I Don’t Do Club Dates, Capture The Moon, Falling ApartBucky And His FriendsFlambe DreamsEver Happily After and the music for the children’s musicals Fancy Nancy ‘Splendiferous’ Christmas and Twinkle Tames A Dragon.

Randy Klein’s more current works include the choral work,  For My People (a song cycle based on the poetry of Margaret Walker) which has been performed numerous times utilizing chorales with up to 120 voices. His compositions Facing It and Dear John, Dear Coltrane are based on the poetry of Pulitzer Award winning poet, Yusef Komunyakaa and Michael Harper. His Fanfare For Jerusalem was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera and sung by 400 voice Hazamir Chorale, while his concert work Brockton had its premiere in 2018. Upcoming is a new musical The Black Swan, inspired by the ballet “Swan Lake” with a blues-infused score. It is a love story set in the magical world of voodoo in New Orleans, and explores racism in the South in the early 1960’s and Speak, a musical about communicating with spirits. He is proud to be playing with his old keyboard friend Kenny Keys on his new single releases Don’t Go and Sleep Walk.

In 1992, Klein founded the Jazzheads label. “The CD format was starting to take off and it seemed like the right time to start my own label. I recorded the album Randy Klein’s Jazzheads and, when WBGO’s Michael Bourne played it on the radio, I knew I had made the right decision. I was fortunate because I knew about the record business, distribution and publicity due to my songwriting background. My goal at Jazzheads has always been to make sure each of our recordings is of the highest musical value. I felt that if one built a catalog of worthy recordings, they would continue to live on for years, and that has come true.” Jazzheads has thus far released over 125 CDs. The Jazzheads catalog includes albums by many of the who’s who of modern jazz including Roni Ben-Hur, Harvie S, Mayra Valdes, Andrea Brachfeld, Diane Schuur, Susie Arioli, Dave Liebman, Claudia Villela, Ray Blue, Bobby Sanabria, Ole Mathisen, Chris Washburne, not to mention Randy Klein himself. One of the label’s recent successes was Bobby Sanabria’s West Side Story Reimagined which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Recording. Jazzheads Music Group also has subsidiary labels: King Kozmo Music (compilations from the catalog along with recordings in other genres) and 8910 (contemporary and pop-oriented music) with a new classical division, Espressivo, coming this spring.

An educator since his days at Berklee, Randy Klein specializes in teaching and conducting seminars and workshops on songwriting, piano, and the business of music. He has been teaching at SongU.com since 2006, been a member of the BMI Musical Theater Workshop since 1982, has written numerous articles, and conducted many presentations. His workshop The Power Of The Song will be presented at the APME (Association of Popular Music Educators) conference at NYU this June.

“After listening to 10-15,000 songs, I had an idea for a book about a guide to songwriting. The idea turned into a four-year writing period which produced a rather large work titled, You Can Write A Song. I was advised that publishers would rather put out a flow of smaller books from the same author so out of the larger work came a smaller book, The Quickstart Guide to Songwriting, which was published in 2017. It teaches anyone (even those with limited musical and English language skills) the basics about how to write a verse, a chorus and a hook line of a song. Currently I am finishing two new books, Songwriting Tips and Listening To Songs.” When asked what he enjoys most about teaching songwriting, he enthusiastically replies, “I have students from all over the world. I love it when students keep on improving and getting better at their craft. It feels so good to share my knowledge with them and help push their music forward.”

Even with all of this activity as a composer, educator, author, and record company president, Randy Klein never neglects his piano playing. “I take lessons from William Daghlian, love to play and practice every day.”  He can be heard on nine recordings as a leader for the Jazzheads label: Randy Klein’s JazzheadsLove Notes From The BassUnderground RomanticInvitation InPiano ChristmasThe FlowingSunday MorningWhat’s Next and Kleinway@Steinway.

Looking towards the future, Randy Klein is particularly enthusiastic about Ambient Spaces. “It is a new improvising project with Robert Appleton, a leading multi-media visual improviser. It includes my improvised jazz piano and Robert Appleton’s improvised projected images. It is beautiful and joyful to experience. It is an exciting marriage of sound, light and improvisation that is influenced by the audience. And lots of fun to perform!!!

“With me, there are always many projects in different degrees of completion going on. I’m living my dream. I am very thankful that I am a musician!”

by Scott Yanow
