As a sideman and leader, Chambers has recorded more than 500 albums and CDs. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Andrew Hill and many more. Allyn Johnson
Native Washingtonian ALLYN JOHNSON is a multi-talented musician, composer, arranger and producer whose trademark sound gives brilliance and fortitude to the art of jazz improvisation. Allyn, a prodigy who began playing piano at the tender age of five, got his start playing piano for the youth choir in his uncle’s church. There he honed his inner musical gift. While a student at the University of the District of Columbia, Allyn was mentored by the late great jazz legend Calvin Jones, a venerable figure in the international jazz community. in 2005 Allyn started an ensemble combining Gospel, Jazz and Classical music called Divine Order. He also has a group called Sonic Sanctuary which may be heard as his trio or small ensemble which ranges from acoustic straight ahead jazz to jazz fusion and funk. No matter what configuration Allyn may be heard in, you can best believe it will be just “good music for the soul.”

Herman Burney
Herman Burney is a native of Washington, DC, but was raised in the arts-nurturing state of North Carolina where he grew up listening to Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and James Cleveland. During his early years Herman played clarinet, drums and tuba and later took up electric bass for a “hard-core funk group” in high school. After meeting jazz titan George Duvivier in 1987, Herman finally settled on his beloved double bass. Herman has traveled all over the world to establish an impressive list of performance credentials as bassist for Nneena Freelon, Marcus Roberts, Freddy Cole, Natalie Cole, Wynton Marsalis, Frank Wess and many others of equal renown. Herman’s first CD was was titled “First Fruits. ” His second is “Offering,” a collection of orginal tunes. When Herman is “at home” he is teaching at George Washington University and the Sitar Arts Center in D.C.

Dennis Chambers
Dennis Chambers (born May 9, 1959) is an American drummer who has recorded and performed with John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic, John McLaughlin, Niacin, Mike Stern, CAB, Greg Howe, and many others. Despite a lack of formal training, Chambers has become well known among drummers for his technique and speed. Chambers is particularly regarded for his ability to play “in the pocket” but can also stretch very far out of the pocket which is also a hallmark of his technique. Chambers exhibits a powerful style that is technically proficient, yet highly musical and groove-oriented. He can play in a wide variety of musical genres, but is perhaps most notable for his jazz-fusion, funk, and Latin music playing. He is mostly known for his fast hands and triplets on the bass drum. He has helped many young drummers, the most prominent being Tony Royster, Jr.

Landscapes (review)
SAVANT 2140

The reviewing equivalent of this publication’s Blindfold Test is to listen to an album knowing only the title and name of its leader. Taking that approach with veteran drummer Joe Chambers’ Landscapes, one is introduced to a vibraphone-driven four-piece unit à la the Modern Jazz Quartet. It’s a lush ambiance, full of complexity and color. A slinky version of Monk’s “Epistrophy” opens this dynamic album, and is followed by Horace Silver’s “The Outlaw,” which showcases a thoughtfully developed piano solo. Thee sustained vibraphone on “Never Let Me Go” emphasizes the lyrical themes of holding on and the potential pain of loss.Chambers’ strength as a composer is reinforced on “Samba De Maracatu,” which boasts standout solos by Chambers himself. Paul Arslanian’s lovely “Pas De Trois,” Sonny Rollins’ “Airegin,” another Silver number (“Ecaroh”) and Karl Ratzer’s “Underground System”—rechristened “Underground (Railroad) System”—follow. Chambers generously allows the pianist to conclude the album with a solo reading of the title track. Upon delving into the accompanying material, the big reveal is that this is actually a trio date with Chambers overdubbing the tuned percussion as well as all the other non-rhythm section instruments. And the nearly 10-minute solo piano number? That’s Chambers, too. Landscapes sounds like the fluid live studio recording of four or more musicians, so it’s impressive on multiple levels. —Yoshi Kat Landscapes: Epistrophy; The Outlaw; Never Let Me Go; Havana; Samba De Maracatu; Pas De Trois; Airegin; Ecaroh; Underground (Railroad) System;
Landscapes. (59:58) Personnel: Joe Chambers, drums, congas, bongos, vibraphone, marimba, synthasizer, piano (10); Rick Germanson, piano (1-9); Ira Coleman, bass (1-9),

Jazz Activist Ira Gitler
Celebrated in New Documentary

shem.gif
Jazz lost the best friend it ever had when Ira Gitler passed away on February 23, 2019.  Ira Gitler Lives! is a new thirty-minute documentary by filmmaker Bret Primack that showcases Gitler’s life in Jazz.  For over six decades, Ira wrote books, liner notes, and articles, produced recording sessions and concerts, as well as working as a broadcaster and teacher.  He was also a hockey enthusiast.

Ira Gitler’s story is told in his own words, from a 2009 video interview Primack produced, and more recent interviews with colleagues Todd Barkan, Randy Brecker, Michael Cuscuna, Jim Eigo, Terry Gibbs, Jeff Levenson, Howard Mandel, Dan Morgenstern and Loren Schoenberg.

As a witness and participant in the creation of Bebop, and Prestige Records, the film includes Ira discussing four classic sessions:  “Zoot Swings The Blues,” when Zoot Sims’ tenor solo broke the time limit on recordings; “Soultrane,” where Ira coined the phrase “sheets of sound,” to describe John Coltrane’s playing in the liner notes; Sonny Rollins debut recording session and Ira’s maiden voyage as a producer; and, the historic Miles Davis recording session that included Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins.

“I first learned about Jazz and Ira reading his DownBeat articles and liner notes,” Primack explains.  “When I starting writing myself I met Ira, who quickly became a mentor and inspiration.  I made this film to reveal who Ira was, as a man, in addition to his work.”

Ira Gitler Lives! can be seen on the Jazz Video Guy YouTube channel:

Mr. Primack plans on presenting the film at Jazz and film festivals later this year.

From Baroque to Bop and Beyond: An extended and detailed history of the intersection of classical music and jazz By Lynn René Bayley Quite possibly the best book you will ever read on the cross-influence of classical music and various forms of jazz from the ragtime era to the present. Lynn Bayley leave no stone…

Quite possibly the best book you will ever read on the cross-influence of classical music and various forms of jazz from the ragtime era to the present. Lynn Bayley leave no stone unturned in her pursuit of the best and most interesting cross-influences of each era. Here are some professional testimonials:

“What an epic tome! Very detailed and precise!”—Miles Osland, Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Saxophone at the University of Kentucky

“Hats off! to Lynn René Bayley for her history/study of the combining, conflicting, enhancing relations between the music called Classical and the music called Jazz. Eminently informative, interesting, and enjoyable reading.”—Alonzo Levister, composer of Manhattan Monodrama, Slow Dance, Blues on the Subway and The Happy Hypocrite

“I think the book is great! You should be very proud of it.”—Byron Olsen, composer of Sketches of Miles and Sketches of Coltrane

“I can’t get enough of your book! Most of the chapters have so much interesting information, are so well written, and are coupled with such astute observations and interesting opinions that I want to read them more than once!”—Charles Ruggiero, classical-jazz composer, Professor of Composition and Music at the Michigan State University College of Music

“There is so much here that I don’t know but that I should know, and want to know more about.”—David Balakrishnan, violinist-composer, founder of the Turtle Island String Quartet

“There are things in the book that I can relate to, both artistically and historically, it’s an interesting read!  As I am a big fan of Ragtime, New Orleans jazz, Mingus, Monk, Latin jazz, Cuban jazz etc. but I am ALSO a fan of dissonant modern classical music at the same time and I am AS WELL indeed very crazy about flamenco and world & folk music.”—Sophie Dunér, jazz composer and singer

“As for your glorious book, I am still reading segments – they are dense with fascinating information – I’m amazed at your scope of research, intriguing details and enjoy your occasional wry comments!”—Bunny Beck, jazz pianist and composer

“It is an encyclopedic labor of love. You have a unique perspective on this material based on your wide listening experience, and you are quite outspoken in your opinions.”—Bruce Wolosoff, jazz-classical composer and pianist

Listening to Prestige

Tad Richards’ odyssey through the catalog of Prestige Records:
an unofficial and idiosyncratic history of jazz in the 50s and 60s. With occasional digressions.

A one-of-a-kind reference book, that will surely take its place in the history of this music.
                  –Dave Grusin

shem.gif
The 1950s and 1960s were a vital era in the history of jazz, and the music was nourished and advanced by the independent labels which gave a platform to established artists and nourished and developed new artists. Dial and Savoy led the way by recording Charlie Parker in the 1940s. These would give way (Dial folding, Savoy switching its focus to rhythm and blues) to the labels of the 1950s: Pacific Jazz and Contemporary on the West Coast, Argo/Cadet in the Midwest. But New York was the epicenter, and it was a breeding ground for young entrepreneurs who wanted to record jazz: Riverside, Bethlehem, Atlantic, the Norman Granz labels (Verve, Clef, Norgran). Blue Note, which had begun operation in the 1930s. And Prestige, founded in 1949 by 19-year-old Bob Weinstock, in operation until 1972.

The history of Prestige is a history in microcosm of the jazz of this legendary era, and its story has never been told. In my multivolume Listening to Prestige, I take a look at every recording session from beginning (Lennie Tristano) to end, with critical appreciation of the music, biographical information on the artists, historical context, and personal reminiscences.

The most interesting book of its kind that I have ever seen. If any of you real jazz lovers want to know about some of the classic records made by some of the legends of jazz, get this book. LOVED IT.
– Terry Gibbs

‘Tom McDermott Meets Scott Joplin’ Review: Reviving Rags

New Orleans pianist Tom McDermott offers an ode to ragtime on a new album, both revering and reinventing standards.

by Larry Blumenfeld

Like so many musicians, pianist Tom McDermott came to New Orleans to play a gig, fell in love with the place and never left. Since relocating in 1984, he has become a fixture on that city’s musical landscape and within its long lineage of pianists, some homegrown and some from afar, each lending distinctive flair to a rich legacy that blends scholarship, humor, funkiness and a range of jazz, blues and R&B influences.

The relaxed feel of Mr. McDermott’s playing sometimes conceals the boldness of his harmonic decisions and the rigor of his approach, which leans on diligent musicology. His playing and his original compositions draw from deep repertoire (he can play Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s mid-19th-century works with aplomb) and flash the same offbeat wit as the limericks and pencil drawings he publishes in small volumes.

“Tom McDermott Meets Scott Joplin” (Arbors), out Friday, reveals a love of ragtime, and of Joplin’s rags in particular, that began long before Mr. McDermott moved to New Orleans. Now 61 years old, he grew up in St. Louis at a time when a young musician could still attend annual ragtime festivals and hear the form (steady beat in the left hand, syncopation in the right, clearly defined thematic sections) played correctly by devotees such as Butch Thompson and James Dapogny. Even before this country got hooked anew on Joplin’s “The Entertainer,” as played by Marvin Hamlisch for the 1973 film “The Sting,” Mr. McDermott had dug into pianist Joshua Rifkin’s Nonesuch recordings of that and other Joplin works.

Joplin’s rags were an anachronism in “The Sting”—the film was set in the 1930s, well after ragtime’s heyday—but ragtime did beget early jazz. It’s the proper precursor for all of the music that Mr. McDermott has embraced. In a liner note, he recalls how, at age 14, “Joplin hit like thunder, opening my door into classic rag, and eventually early jazz, Brazilian music, Cuban grooves and New Orleans R&B.” All these influences figure into his approach to these 17 tracks.

Mr. McDermott is both reverent and not. He plays it mostly straight on “The Easy Winners” and “Magnetic Rag,” both of which benefit from his graceful light touch. He accentuates the tenderness and somber tone of “Gladiolus Rag.” On “Fig Leaf Rag,” he appropriates some of the variations Mr. Rifkin used on his Nonesuch versions. With “The Strenuous Life,” he places Joplin in a New Orleans jazz context, via what Jelly Roll Morton called “the Spanish tinge” (and redolent of the sound of a New Orleans piano pioneer, Professor Longhair). Mr. McDermott erases the march from “Rosebud March,” loosening its joints gradually to achieve a sped-up midsection that sounds like an overt homage to another New Orleans piano legend, James Booker.

“Maple Leaf Rag,” one of Joplin’s best-known and most demanding rags, was also, upon its publication in 1899, the earliest of sheet-music best sellers. It forms a centerpiece here, full of unorthodox key changes in the opening section and sly shifts of tempo and style before ending, in unusual fashion, back on the opening “A” section. In lesser hands, such an approach would seem mere pastiche. Mr. McDermott is hardly the first to toy with this rag (New Orleans pianist Henry Butler, among others, had his own radical interpretation), but his version is notable for both its daring and its cohesion. “The Entertainer,” another highlight, is the furthest flung and hardest swung of Mr. McDermott’s takes on Joplin.

New Orleans isn’t the only place that seduced Mr. McDermott. Brazil has long been a muse as well, particularly for its choro style, which predated ragtime in origin and outlasted it in popularity. Mr. McDermott ends this Joplin album with three tracks originally issued on his 2005 release, “Choro do Norte,” which featured Brazilian and New Orleans-based musicians. The combination of choro and ragtime makes musicological sense, in terms of both form and shared roots; as expressed here by Mr. McDermott, it’s a sublime blend, lending fresh propulsion to ragtime’s inherent bounce on “Swipesy Cakewalk.” On “Heliotrope Bouquet,” arranged by Mr. McDermott for a piano-less quintet, the melody is introduced by Henry Lentino’s bandolim (a Brazilian mandolin) and passed along to clarinetist Evan Christopher and trombonist Rick Trolsen. They capture both the lilt and sway of Brazilian music, and the bluesy directness of early New Orleans jazz.

Scott Joplin’s rags have long fascinated musicians for their structural elegance, their magnificent melodies and their invitation to invent. With his own immersion, Mr. McDermott has broadened the possibilities and rekindled a spark.

Mr. Blumenfeld writes about jazz and Afro-Latin music for the Wall Street Journal.

SAVANT 2140

The reviewing equivalent of this publication’s Blindfold Test is to listen to an album knowing only the title and name of its leader. Taking that approach with veteran drummer Joe Chambers’ Landscapes, one is introduced to a vibraphone-driven four-piece unit à la the Modern Jazz Quartet. It’s a lush ambiance, full of complexity and color. A slinky version of Monk’s “Epistrophy” opens this dynamic album, and is followed by Horace Silver’s “The Outlaw,” which showcases a thoughtfully developed piano solo. Thee sustained vibraphone on “Never Let Me Go” emphasizes the lyrical themes of holding on and the potential pain of loss.Chambers’ strength as a composer is reinforced on “Samba De Maracatu,” which boasts standout solos by Chambers himself. Paul Arslanian’s lovely “Pas De Trois,” Sonny Rollins’ “Airegin,” another Silver number (“Ecaroh”) and Karl Ratzer’s “Underground System”—rechristened “Underground (Railroad) System”—follow. Chambers generously allows the pianist to conclude the album with a solo reading of the title track. Upon delving into the accompanying material, the big reveal is that this is actually a trio date with Chambers overdubbing the tuned percussion as well as all the other non-rhythm section instruments. And the nearly 10-minute solo piano number? That’s Chambers, too. Landscapes sounds like the fluid live studio recording of four or more musicians, so it’s impressive on multiple levels. —Yoshi Kat Landscapes: Epistrophy; The Outlaw; Never Let Me Go; Havana; Samba De Maracatu; Pas De Trois; Airegin; Ecaroh; Underground (Railroad) System;
Landscapes. (59:58) Personnel: Joe Chambers, drums, congas, bongos, vibraphone, marimba, synthasizer, piano (10); Rick Germanson, piano (1-9); Ira Coleman, bass (1-9),

Critical Acclaim:

SOLO:

“…he is an improvisational artist whose skills are so expansive that he can integrate everything he hears into the fabric of his soloing. In the best sense, in the manner that has always been true of jazz’s finest improvisers, Zeitlin constantly stretches the creative envelope, measuring himself only against the infinite demands of his music.”
        Don Heckman, Los Angeles Time

“…Zeitlin delivered a riveting solo performance.”
        George Goodman, New York Times

“In supreme command of the keyboard…he employs striking dissonances, he constructs extraordinary edifices of harmonics, he can be marvelously pianistic, with a velvet subtlety of touch. He is an original…Denny Zeitlin stretches jazz piano beyond any hitherto defined limits.”
        Don Freeman, San Diego Union

“…He didn’t show his brilliance through his technique (which he has), but through subtle improvisation, advanced and finely-tuned harmonic development, and a stupendous internal sense of meter…Denny Zeitlin’s solo piano was the unpretentious highpoint of the festival.”
       Munchner Merkur (Munich)

TRIO (reviews of latest CD with Buster Williams & Matt Wilson, “Wishing On The Moon”):

Denny Zeitlin is not simply a very good pianist.  He is a great one…one of the most highly accomplished musicians writing for and performing on the instrument today…throughout this magnificent record (superbly engineered at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, at Jazz At Lincoln Center) one is continuously impressed at how Mr. Zeitlin is alive to the complex pleasure of contemporary music…and how blessed he is to have two of the most magical players on their instruments…”
       Raul da Gama, Jazzdagama

“…Williams creates giant ripples, Wilson is like unto a force of nature, and Zeitlin storms and swirls without leaving the listener behind, maintaining a (restless) lyricism throughout…Zeitlin is up there in the pantheon with Corea, Tyner, and Herbie Hancock.”
       Mark Keresman, ICONDV

“…Wishing On The Moon represents the Denny Zeitlin Trio at the peak of its powers, on one of those nights when all the gears meshed, and all the stars aligned around that shining moon.”
       Dan McClenaghan, allaboutjazz

“…this newly released album features Denny at his explorative best, taking standards apart and reassembling them with curiosity and daring…”
       Marc Myers, jazzwax

New Scott Robinson Quartet
Album is Released Today!

shem.gif

Today is the official release day for my new CD, “Tenormore.”

It is my first all-tenor album – something that’s been a long time coming – featuring the same 1924 Conn tenor I’ve been playing all these years, that came out of an antique shop in 1975. This is also the first album by my longstanding group with Helen Sung, Martin Wind and Dennis Mackrel.

Watch our little promo video:

Please help me celebrate my 60th birthday month by checking out this very special project, which has already been rated 4 stars in DownBeat and 4 1/2 stars in All About Jazz.

This is from Arbors Records.

You can pick it up HERE (trust me, you will be pleasantly surprised at the price!).

Thank you for your interest and support,

Scott

SAVANT 2140

The reviewing equivalent of this publication’s Blindfold Test is to listen to an album knowing only the title and name of its leader. Taking that approach with veteran drummer Joe Chambers’ Landscapes, one is introduced to a vibraphone-driven four-piece unit à la the Modern Jazz Quartet. It’s a lush ambiance, full of complexity and color. A slinky version of Monk’s “Epistrophy” opens this dynamic album, and is followed by Horace Silver’s “The Outlaw,” which showcases a thoughtfully developed piano solo. Thee sustained vibraphone on “Never Let Me Go” emphasizes the lyrical themes of holding on and the potential pain of loss.Chambers’ strength as a composer is reinforced on “Samba De Maracatu,” which boasts standout solos by Chambers himself. Paul Arslanian’s lovely “Pas De Trois,” Sonny Rollins’ “Airegin,” another Silver number (“Ecaroh”) and Karl Ratzer’s “Underground System”—rechristened “Underground (Railroad) System”—follow. Chambers generously allows the pianist to conclude the album with a solo reading of the title track. Upon delving into the accompanying material, the big reveal is that this is actually a trio date with Chambers overdubbing the tuned percussion as well as all the other non-rhythm section instruments. And the nearly 10-minute solo piano number? That’s Chambers, too. Landscapes sounds like the fluid live studio recording of four or more musicians, so it’s impressive on multiple levels. —Yoshi Kat Landscapes: Epistrophy; The Outlaw; Never Let Me Go; Havana; Samba De Maracatu; Pas De Trois; Airegin; Ecaroh; Underground (Railroad) System;
Landscapes. (59:58) Personnel: Joe Chambers, drums, congas, bongos, vibraphone, marimba, synthasizer, piano (10); Rick Germanson, piano (1-9); Ira Coleman, bass (1-9),

Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture announces
complete schedule, artistic personnel and activities for

Machito & the Impact of the Afro-Cubans at 80

May 2 – 4, 2019

(Bronx, NY) – Modeled after the highly acclaimed retrospective of Tito Puente in 2017, the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture will honor the late iconic singer and bandleader Francisco “Machito” Grillo (1908-1984) and his Orchestra (the Afro-Cubans) in a 3-day celebration May 2-4 on the campus of Hostos Community College, 450 Grand Concourse (at 149th Street), in the Bronx. “Machito & the Impact of the Afro-Cubans at 80” examines the Orchestra’s influence on a variety of Latin musical styles, including Latin jazz that affected the music of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Stan Kenton and others.

The festival’s ten events, many free, also delve into the careers and impact of Machito’s family members and musical partners in the Afro-Cubans – Mario Bauzá (1911- 1993) and vocalist Graciela (1915-2010), known as the “First Lady of Latin Jazz.” Bauzá, was a talented multi-instrumentalist who served as musical director of his brother-in-law’s orchestra and encouraged Machito to embrace American jazz with Cuban rhythms. After Machito was drafted in the Army, Bauzá brought Machito’s sister Graciela (Peréz-Gutiérrez) from Cuba to join the band as lead singer. After Machito’s return from service, the three shared the stage for 32 years, topping the charts and reigning supreme at New York’s Palladium Ballroom in its heyday.  Machito was the eldest of “The Three Kings” – the moniker given to the celebrated band leaders that performed at the Palladium  – the others being Tito Puente, who was a timbalist in Machito’s Afro-Cubans in 1941, and the singer Tito Rodríguez who made his last public appearance with Machito in 1973.

Under the artistic direction of Machito’s son, Mario Grillo, as well as Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist and composer Carlos Henríquez and Latin music historian Joe Conzo, Sr., the festival is designed for both Machito enthusiasts and those less familiar with his music.  Henríquez leads “Machito and Beyond” on Thursday, May 2, at 7:30 PM, in a concert that includes acclaimed vocalist Cita Rodríguez, a host of New York’s top young jazz musicians, plus some legendary percussion veterans, for a youthful take on some Machito classics. Bobby Sanabria & Ascensión will take to the stage in a free family concert on Saturday, May 4, at 11 AM, with an informative performance demonstrating how Machito & the Afro-Cubans brought Cuban forms to Latin jazz. The final concert on Saturday, May 4 at 7:30 PM features The Machito Orchestra in its 80th Anniversary concert under the direction of Mario Grillo, who carries on his father’s legacy, and featuring guest vocalist and two-time Grammy winner Herman Olivera. In addition to these concerts, the three-day celebration includes listening sessions, a panel discussion, a film presentation, a museum exhibit with tour, a Latin rhythm workshop, and a closing Mambo Dance Party in the Hostos Café.

Tickets, including 3-day passes for $45, and a schedule of events are available at www.hostoscenter.org or by calling (718) 518-4455.

Francisco “Machito” Grillo (1908-1984) played a huge role in the history of Latin jazz, for his bands of the 1940s were probably the first to achieve a fusion of powerful Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz improvisation. At its roaring best, the band had a hard-charging sound, loaded with jostling, hyperactive bongos and congas and razor-edged riffing brass. Machito was the front man, singing, conducting, shaking maracas, while his brother-in-law  Mario Bauza was the innovator behind the scenes, getting Machito to hire jazz-oriented arrangers. The son of a cigar manufacturer, Machito became a professional musician in Cuba in his teens before he immigrated to America in 1937 as a vocalist with La Estrella Habanera. He worked with several Latin artists and orchestras in the late ’30s, recording with the then-dominant Latin bandleader Xavier Cugat.  After an earlier aborted attempt to launch a band with Bauza, Machito founded the Afro-Cubans in 1940, taking on Bauza the following year as music director where he remained for 35 years. After making some early 78s for Decca, the Afro-Cubans really began to catch on after the end of World War II, appearing with — and no doubt influencing — Stan Kenton’s orchestra (Machito played maracas on Kenton’s recordings of “The Peanut Vendor” and “Cuban Carnival”) and recording some exciting sides for Mercury and Clef. Upon Bauza’s urging, Machito’s band featured a galaxy of American jazz soloists on its recordings from 1948 to 1960, including Charlie Parker (heard memorably on “No Noise”), Dizzy Gillespie, Flip Phillips, Howard McGhee, Buddy Rich, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Mann, Curtis Fuller and Johnny Griffin. Playing regularly at New York’s Palladium, Machito’s band reached its peak of popularity during the mambo craze of the 1950s, survived the upheavals of the ’60s and despite the loss of Bauza in 1976, continued to work frequently in the ’60s, ’70s, and early ’80s when the term “salsa” came into use. The band recorded for Pablo (in tandem with Gillespie) and Timeless in its later years, and was playing Ronnie Scott’s club in London in 1984 when Machito suffered a fatal stroke. A documentary film by Carlo Ortiz, Machito: A Latin Jazz Legacy, was released in 1987. – Richard Ginnell All Music

Mario Bauzá (1911 – 1993) was an Afro-Cuban jazz musician. He was one of the first to introduce Cuban music to the United States by bringing Cuban musical styles to the New York City jazz scene. While Cuban bands had popular jazz tunes in their repertoire for years,  Bauzá’s composition “Tangá” was the first piece to blend jazz with clave, and is considered the first true Afro-Cuban jazz or Latin jazz tune. Bauzá had been hired as lead trumpeter and musical director for Chick Webb‘s Orchestra by 1933, and it was during his time with Webb that Bauzá both met fellow trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and discovered and brought into the band singer Ella Fitzgerald. Importantly, Bauzá introduced the young Havana virtuoso Chano Pozo to Dizzy, when the latter wanted to add a Cuban percussionist to his band; though Pozo was killed in a Harlem bar fight just a year later, he left an indelible and long-lasting mark on Dizzy’s playing and compositions, co-writing several legendary compositions such as “Manteca” and “Tin Tin Deo”. In 1938 Bauzá joined Cab Calloway‘s band, later convincing Calloway to hire Dizzy Gillespie as well. Bauzá continued to work with Gillespie for several years after he left Calloway’s band in 1940. The fusion of Bauzá’s Cuban musical heritage and Gillespie’s bebop culminated in the development of cubop, one of the first forms of Latin jazz. In 1941, Bauzá became musical director of Machito and his Afro-Cubans, a band led by his brother-in-law Machito. The band produced its first recording for Decca in 1941, and in 1942 Bauzá brought in a young timbalero named Tito Puente. “Cubop City” and “Mambo Inn” followed the success of “Tanga.” Machito and his Afro-Cubans often played straight-ahead big band mambo music. Many of the numbers were covers of recordings which had proved popular in Cuba. The band played mambo-style dance numbers at venues such as Manhattan’s Palladium Ballroom. Bauzá kept his post as director of the Afro-Cubans until 1976. After this he worked sparingly, but was always highly respected. – Wikipedia.

Graciela Pérez Gutiérrez (1915-2010) was born in Havana, Cuba and raised in the Afro-Cuban Jesús María neighborhood. A pioneer in music, as a black Cuban woman, in a so-called man’s world, she opened doors for all those who followed her. She performed around the world, recording and sharing the stage with her adoptive older brother, Frank “Machito” Grillo, who encouraged her to sing. They played alongside Mario Bauzá (originator of the genre of Afro-Cuban Jazz) in the world-renowned orchestra Machito and the Afro-Cubans. Graciela was primarily known for her tremendous voice, risque and sassy stage presence and sexy double entendre lyrics. She could sing a jazzy guaracha as easily as handling the most romantic boleros. Though her last names were Pérez Gutiérrez, she was only known by her first name, “Graciela”, long before doing so became widely fashionable among musicians. She was summoned to New York City in 1943 by Mario Bauzá, when Machito was drafted into the army. She joined the orchestra as lead singer until Machito returned in 1944 and from then on the three shared the stage together until their untimely split in 1975. For thirty-two years they were on top of the charts and were the orchestra not only to beat, but to emulate. Not only did they travel the United States and the rest of the world, but they were leaders and reigned supreme during the heyday of the Palladium Ballroom (where blacks, Jews, Italians and Hispanics, and celebrities would converge to dance), from 1946 until it’s closing in 1966. Besides the Palladium, they would perform at the Royal Roost, Birdland, the Park Palace, the Corso and the Apollo Theater on a yearly week-long gig—and many other clubs and theaters in New York. Graciela and the orchestra also performed on a yearly basis in Hollywood—specifically at the Crescendo nightclub.. They were also the summer headliners in the Concord Resort Hotel, in the Catskills Mountains, for more than twenty years. They recorded albums in which her best-known songs include “Esta es Graciela”, “Íntimo y Sentimental” and “Esa Soy Yo, Yo Soy Así.” – Wikipedia

About Mario Grillo
Mario Grillo is old enough to have caught the tail end of the Mambo craze, and to have played with his father, yet young enough to have absorbed the groundbreaking trends that influenced Latin jazz. Grillo played timbales, congas and bongos when he made a debut with his father’s band, The Machito Orchestra, at the age of five. In 1975, he joined the band for its Grammy-nominated recording Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods with Dizzy Gillespie and featured arrangements by Chico O’Farrill. Grillo, often known as “Machito, Jr.,” toured Europe with Machito and took over the duties of musical director in the band in 1977, the year that they earned another Grammy nomination for Fireworks—when Lalo Rodríguez changed the tone as co-lead singer. Committed to keeping his father’s legacy alive, the renowned percussionist has since returned to venues around the world with The Machito Orchestra. A native New Yorker, he has led the orchestra for more than 40 years at home and abroad. In 2015, he donated Machito’s handwritten scores and arrangements to the Library of Congress. Most recently, Grillo has been performing and recording with the Dizzy Gillespie Afro Cuban Experience under the direction of bassist John Lee.

About Carlos Henríquez
Carlos Henríquez was born in 1979 in the Bronx. He studied music at a young age, played guitar through junior high school and took up the bass while enrolled in The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program. He entered LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts and was a member of the LaGuardia Concert Jazz Ensemble, which went on to win first place in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival in 1996. In 1998, swiftly after high school, Henríquez joined the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, touring the world and being featured on more than 25 albums. Henríquez has performed with Chucho Valdés, Tito Puente, the Marsalis Family, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Marc Anthony, and many others. He has been a member of the music faculty at Northwestern University School of Music since 2008, and was music director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s cultural exchange with the Cuban Institute of Music with Chucho Valdés in 2010. He has led many concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center including programs on Tito Puente, Machito, Dizzy Gillespie and, most recently, for a program of his own compositions under the title “The South Bronx Story.”

About Cita Rodríguez
Cita Rodríguez, the daughter of the famed salsa singer Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez, was born in the Bronx and attended Boys and Girls Harbor School in Spanish Harlem, where she studied flute and sang in the chorus. She moved with her family to Puerto Rico in 1979, and soon after she appeared frequently with her father’s band. While a student at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, Rodríguez became part of the salsa group Los Hijos de Salsa, which involved recording and touring. In 1991, after the family returned to New York, Rodríguez and her brother, Pete became part of the group Generaciónes with her father. Since her father’s passing in 2000, she has performed and recorded with her own group as well as being a featured vocalist (often performing Graciela tunes) with the Mambo Legends and other groups.

He then went on to form recording and performance collaborations with Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto, The Machito Orchestra, and Israel ‘Cachao’ Lopez, among many others. In the late 1990s, Olivera assumed the prestigious role of lead vocalist for the Eddie Palmieri Orchestra. To date Herman has recorded on over 45 albums, received four Grammy nominations and is the recipient of two Grammy awards. In 2014, he recorded his debut album titled La Voz del Caribe.

NEW YORK CITY – Twenty-two “activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz” in 20 U.S. cities were announced by the Jazz Journalists Association today as the organization’s 2019 slate of Jazz Heroes. This year’s Heroes, from Amherst, Massachusetts to Los Angeles, California, Seattle to South Florida, are all presenters, educators, non-profit administrators, public faces of grassroots organizations and in several cases active players sustaining and developing America’s native-born music in their local communities and beyond. The complete list of honorees, with photo portraits and biographies, is posted at http://www.jjajazzawards.org/p/2019-jazz-heroes.html.

Tenor saxophonist Paul Carr, founder of Washington D.C.’s Jazz Academy of Music; singer Suzanne Cloud, former executive director of Philadelphia’s Jazz Bridge; Tallahassee-based pianist Bob Dogan, mentoring young players; flutist Holly Hofmann, founder of the UC San Diego Jazz Camp; trumpeter Steve Kenny, who’s established series at St. Paul’s Black Dog café and Minneapolis’ Jazz Central Studio, and New Orleans brass band drummer Derrick Tabb, who established the Roots of Music after-school program, are among the musicians doing something extra that has resulted in their being feted by fans and friends in events co-hosted by the JJA at which they’ll receive engraved statuettes.

Harlem salon hostess Marjorie Eliot, Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and Indy Jazz Fest producer David Allee, executive director of Portland’s Biamp PDX Jazz Festival Don Lucoff, and drummers John Bishop and Matt Jorgensen, who run Origin Records and launched the Ballard Jazz Festival are also named as Jazz Heroes. As JJA president Howard Mandel writes about South Florida Jazz Hero Dr. Joan Cartwright, Jazz Heroes are models for “anyone whose ambitions extend to being creative, innovative, expressive, self-realized, in the moment while communing with others, sharing experience, telling truth, and seeking beauty.”

The Jazz Journalists Association, a 501 (c) (3) professional organization of writers, photographers, videographers and broadcasters covering jazz, established its Jazz Heroes campaign in 2010, having since 2001 called the honorees members of the JJA “A Team.” The JJA presents annual Jazz Awards for excellence in music and music journalism; nominees for 2019 Jazz Awards will be announced mid-April, with winners of those Awards revealed on or about May 1.

Entities collaborating on 2019 Jazz Heroes presentations include B Sharps Jazz Club, the Biamp PDX Jazz Festival and Jack London Revue, the Carr Center, the Hyde Park Jazz Society, the Los Angeles Jazz Foundation, MCGJazz, JazzPolice.com and Westminster Presbyterian Church. North Coast Brewing Company is beverage sponsor of the JJA Jazz Heroes campaign. For more information on the JJA Jazz Heroes, Jazz Awards or the Jazz Journalists Association itself, contact Howard Mandel, President@JazzJournalists.org

ABOUT the JAZZ FOUNDATION
Now celebrating 30 years, the Jazz Foundation has been keeping jazz, blues, roots, R&B, and soul alive by helping the musicians who have played with everyone from Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday to Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. Our social work services provide housing assistance, pro bono medical care, disaster relief, and emergency financial support to musicians and their families in times of crisis. Through our Jazz and Blues in the Schools and other performance programs, we create dignified employment for musicians who are too old or too ill to tour, and reach thousands of public school children every year. Whatever the need is, we don’t just fix the problem, we heal it with creative solutions and love. Your support to the Jazz Foundation helped provide assistance in over 9,000 cases last year alone, throughout the United States, including our ongoing efforts in Puerto Rico.

Alvin Queen Trio OP A Tribute To Oscar Peterson (Stunt Records)

More Info

Alvin Queen Trio – OP  a tribute to Oscar Peterson

Stunt  STUCD 18157

Available February 22, 2019

Beyond their professional relationship as bandmates, Oscar Peterson and Alvin Queen were also good friends. Thus, this tribute to the great pianist is a heartbeat for the drummer who played with bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen in Oscar Peterson’s famous trio during the coda of Peterson’s life. That Alvin Queen has chosen to record in collaboration with two Danish musicians speaks volumes about the musical level of pianist Zier Romme and bassist Ida Hvid.

After a long and active life in jazz service, Queen, the 67-year-old drummer who has played with an impressive list of jazz giants, knows what he’s doing. Romme, the 26-year-old Peterson-inspired virtuoso, has already gained great recognition on the Nordic jazz scene with his undeniable talent and impressively mature playing, despite his young age. 38-year-old Ida Hvid (known from Niels Jørgen Steen’s Monday Night Big Band, among other projects) is now a pioneer on the frontiers of contemporary European jazz. This trio constellation is a unique meeting between the seasoned and young, where all three play with the same goal and purpose: creating classical chamber jazz as the master himself cultivated it – outgoing, sparkling, groovy, dynamic, swinging, soulful, and melodic music taken from OP’s extensive repertoire.

The word “tribute” is defined as “an act, statement, or gift that is intended to show gratitude, respect, or admiration.” Alvin Queen created this powerful musical statement as a gift to my Dad showing his deep gratitude for the time they were able to spend together performing all over the world. His admiration for Dad was always shown during the time they spent together, not just on the bandstand, but backstage, at restaurants, in hotel rooms, and airports, where they would share cherished moments of conversation and laughter. The respect that Alvin had for Dad as a man and, of course, for the music they performed is shown not only in this project, but in how he has taken the lessons he learned while they were on the road together and applied them to his own career.

Alvin has worked with the best of the best in terms of musicians considered to be “jazz legends” and as a result has earned his spot as one of the most in-demand players in the industry. This is something that Alvin does not take lightly, and he has worked for years to maintain the dignity and respect in this music that those before him worked so hard for. To me, Alvin is a friend, an Uncle, and a cherished confidant with whom I have nothing but fondness for. Alvin came into Dad’s group during what would end up being our last years of touring, and while there were many challenges and difficulties, we always maintained that we were a family and the band did much more than support Dad on stage. They supported both my parents and I in whatever ways we needed, both on and off the road.

My love for Alvin is never-ending and I am grateful to him for bringing this project to life and for sharing with us music from a formative piece of his musical journey. This CD is one that I will cherish for the rest of my life, as I will my relationship with Alvin. Dear Alvin, thank you for this beautiful physical presentation of the true definition of the word “tribute.”

All my love,

Céline Peterson

BOLO for Jazz Perpetrator
Gabriel Mark Hasselbach

shem.gif
Gabriel Mark Hasselbach is an anomaly in the jazz world, an award winning mad skills artist who walks a tightrope over the great jazz divide. He is a well seasoned trumpet/flugelhorn player, who also performs and records on flute, vocals and valve trombone. He’s a true jazzer at heart, nailing down the trifecta of Mainstream, Contemporary, and NOLA styles, all the while knocking on the clubhouse door of the oh-so-rare crossover giants such as Bob James, Chuck Loeb, Randy Brecker, George Benson, Marcus Miller, etc.

He has several straight-ahead albums that have impacted the JazzWeek charts, but is best known in the Smooth Jazz world with
14 critically acclaimed releases, nine Billboard hitsAlbum of the Year Award,  Instrumentalist of the Year Award, several JUNO awards (Canadian equiv of a Grammy), and a plethora of other awards including West Coast Music Award and gold album awards.

Gabriel has two recent projects mining both ends of the spectrum and causing quite a stir.

Last April he debuted MidCentury Modern Vol 1 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, at the 2018 New Orleans Jazz Festival. MCM Vol 1 is a straight ahead old school romp that features jazz titans such as Ernie Watts, Cory Weeds, and Miles Black, and seasons it with some
NOLA style hotsauce.

On the other side of the coin, Gabriel recently released Radio Gold, which has already started up the Billboard chart arc with ‘Most Added’ status the first day it dropped. It is a 19 track retrospective of his best contemporary works, including his Billboard hits, plus a brand new radio single Way After 8. This track features the iconic Brit guitarist
Ronny Jordan, and is Ronny’s last recording before and after his untimely death in 2014. Gabriel’s soaring flugelhorn and Ronny’s fluid guitar is a match made in heaven.

Gabriel is no stranger to the festival circuit and has a
long history of festivals (Montreux, JVC, North Sea, Maui, Tokyo, San Pancho, Chandler Jazz, etc) and rocks a great show. He also goes deep into the straight-ahead jazz lexicon, too. Gabriel works out of Vancouver, Phoenix, and New Orleans, and has performed in a plethora of countries, and has even performed for Presidents, Royalty and Bill Gates.

He has recorded and/or performed with well known names like
George Benson, Bob James , Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb, Brian Bromberg, Bob Mintzer, Warren Hill, Paul Brown, Jeremy Monteiro, Larry Coryell, Marc Antoine, Bob Baldwin, and a host of others.

Gabriel’s recognizable sound and innate lyrical style are key components in his ability to create succinct and inviting jazz content, without dumbing it down, regardless of which side of the jazz fence it falls.

TRIO (reviews of latest CD with Buster Williams & Matt Wilson, “Wishing On The Moon):

       Mark Keresman, INCONDV

“…Wishing On The Moon represents the Denny Zeitlin Trio at the peak of its powers, on one of those nights when all the gears meshed, and all the stars aligned around that shining moon.”
       Dan McClenaghan, allaboutjazz

“…this newly released album features Denny at his explorative best, taking standards apart and reassembling them with curiosity and daring…”
       Marc Myers, jazzwax

Jazz vocalist Lyn Stanley keeps it real with her brand-new direct-to-disc vinyl release:
London with a Twist—Live at Bernie’s

Revisiting London: Internationally acclaimed song stylist Lyn Stanley delivers a double-disc audiophile recording, part 2 of her Julie London tribute project

With her new release, sultry jazz singer Lyn Stanley follows up on her well-received 2018 album
London Calling—A Toast to Julie London

shem.gif
How does a musical artist define perfection? And what lengths will one go to in order to achieve it?
The answer to the first question may be in the ear of the beholder. The response to the second part could include recording take after take, into double digits; extensive editing, overdubbing, looping, and an electronic helping hand from a spectrum of software and apps.

Internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Lyn Stanley’s view of perfection includes none of that post-production studio wizardry. For her, perfection is the true sound of a stellar live performance, recorded direct to disc through vintage equipment, in a studio where’s she surrounded by musicians and techs who share her wavelength. The result of such a dream session can be heard on her brand-new vinyl album London with a Twist—Live at Bernie’s, set for release on May 10. 2019.

“There’s a stigma about achieving ‘perfection.’ It takes the art out of what you’re doing if you have to follow what someone else declared to be the rules of engagement,” Stanley declares. “You can run with your creativity if you don’t have to have perfection. What you hear on London with a Twistis what you’d get on stage for real.”

London with a Twistis song stylist Stanley’s seventh release. It’s her second project paying tribute to an earlier sultry Southern California-based singer, Julie London, following 2018’s London Calling—A Toast to Julie London
Recording direct to disc is a challenge for any musician, as evidenced by the very few albums made under these stringent conditions. Allen Sides, recording and mixing engineer on London with a Twist, compares direct-to-disc recording to “plugging microphones directly into a cutting lathe,” which records the results onto an analog disc. The advantage is the pristine sound resulting from eliminating multiple generations separating the performance from the finished album.

The drawback? So many things can go wrong. With no post-recording modifications possible, a flubbed note, the rustle of turning pages, or the sudden urge to cough either stays on the record or the entire take is scrapped, and the process starts over from scratch. For London with a Twist, each album side consists of a single take: three tunes, 12-14 minutes of music. The viability of each side hung in the balance down to its last note, ratcheting up the stress levels. Lyn found that the pressure worked for her, boosting her concentration and landing her deep in the zone. “I almost had to go into a trance,” she explains.

The high-stakes process of recording direct to disc can inhibit musicians and make them stick to the tried and true instead of breaking creative ground. However, the band–guitarist John Chiodini, pianists Otmaro Ruiz and Mike Lang, bassist Chuck Berghofer, drummer Aaron Serfaty, and percussionist Luis Conte–“didn’t hold back, they played as live as they could,” Stanley notes. She points out that she chose to release the takes based on their performances rather than her own: “I picked the one where I loved what they did.” There was a buzz of solidarity in the studio, with the vocalist and the musicians brainstorming and collaborating to develop arrangements on the spot. By the end of the session, the players had devised a new moniker for themselves: “The Jazz Mavericks.”

Another challenge of direct-to-disc recording is adjusting to the shifting moods of the tunes in the three- to five-second separations between songs. On just one album side, Lyn Stanley’s interpretations run the emotional gamut from the easy swing of “Route 66,” through the rollicking “Pink Cadillac,” to the heartfelt “Lover Man” But despite the pressure-cooker situation, Stanley and The Jazz Mavericks shift through all the feelings seemingly effortlessly, delivering a dozen tunes with a relaxed, creative, swinging sound.

Before the London with a Twistsession even began, Stanley and company encountered a dismaying range of glitches, starting with a lingering case of acute bronchitis that added a little rasp to her voice. Nevertheless, throughout the album she’s projecting with power and pride both vocally and emotionally. Listeners will notice that Lyn’s tone this time around is deeper and sultrier. Her sound is in keeping with her inspiration, Julie London, “But my voice isn’t as husky as hers. I’m not pretending to be Julie, I’m honoring her,” Stanley says.

And then there were mechanical difficulties. The day before the session, a dial broke on the custom-built totally discreet vintage API 16 input console that had been brought in for the session. According to Lyn, whose interest in sound has grown along with her professional career, the board had been “sitting in the bowels of Capitol Records since the 1970s,” so replacement parts aren’t readily available. Unless, of course, you’re working with a veteran mastering engineer such as Bernie Grundman: the Bernieof London with a Twist—Live at Bernie’s. Assistant engineer Beno May rummaged around in his back office at Bernie’s till he found the right part to swap in. “They worked on the repair till midnight,” Stanley recalls.

The next day, the session kicked off as scheduled, but by the end of the first tune one of the piano keys went south. They scuffled to find a piano tech on a Saturday, and came up with a dedicated pro who had recently undergone major heart surgery–“he still had all those things stuck to his skin,” Lyn notes. He was in and out quickly enough that there was still time to record a take of sides A and B, earning a hearty round of applause from all on hand.

The second day of the session also brought technical problems, in this case with Lyn’s venerable Neumann mic. Again, the solution was in Bernie’s deep stash of gear, where they unearthed a similar Neumann for her to use for the rest of the session.

The day yielded enough takes to complete the album, but there was still a wild card to contend with. Bruce Springsteen wouldn’t grant permission for Lyn to release his tune “Pink Cadillac” until he heard her finished version. Without his OK, the album couldn’t be released and all the work by Lyn, The Jazz Mavericks and their stellar tech team would have been in vain. It took more than two nail-biting weeks to get Bruce’s reply—Lyn points out that other license covers typically took about six hours—but the Boss eventually did give his seal of approval.

Throughout the process Lyn was pleased be in the company of such unflappable pros, each armed with deep stores of imagination, patience, and spare parts.

A lifelong audiophile, Stanley welcomed the challenge of recording direct to disc, and is justly proud of the results. She released her first album only six years ago, and believes that being a relative newbie may have given her an advantage over a more experienced singer. “They would know better than to try something like this,” Lyn notes with a laugh. “The direct-to-disc recording process leaves the artist totally exposed. It takes a lot of guts to be this exposed as an artist, saying ‘This is it, take it or leave it.’ Nobody has the guts to do that anymore. There’s no hiding.”

The singer is passionate about improving her art, constantly getting better at what she does and producing albums that are “as real sounding as possible. I want it to sound real versus cosmetically done,” Lyn says. “Whatever happened to real music, with this focus on perfection? Everything is massaged and manipulated, even live albums. There’s even an app to add disc hiss. The real raw is direct to disc!”

She finds the audiophile aspect of recording totally engaging and extremely satisfying. “I’d take a great audio system over a fancy car or a big diamond any day,” the vocalist muses.

In addition to London with a TwistLyn plans to release an addendum album [name here], a single disc with the same songs on each side from different recording sources. “One side was recorded direct to disc, the other was recorded on a souped-up Chevy of a tape machine that Bernie’s got,” Lyn explains. A limited edition pressing of 300 albums will be available May 10 2019 for audiophiles to discover and appreciate the difference in the sound.

The quality of this imaginative and bold recording project will have jazz fans, and audiophiles on the edge of their seats in anticipation of what gifted vocalist Lyn Stanley tries her hand at next.

New Release
Garden District Trio
Presents “Upward”

shem.gif
The new album “Upward” by the Garden District Trio features all original compositions by drummer and band-leader, David W. Hansen. Recorded at “Studio In The Country” featuring Jordan Baker on piano, Brian Quezergue on bass with engineer Benjamin Mumphrey.

Release Date: Friday, February 15th, 2019
Garden District Trio
Presents Upward with Jordan Baker, Brian Quezergue and David W. Hansen

Following nine albums of classic covers, funky New Orleans tunes, and Latin-jazz renditions, David W. Hansen has broken through a twenty-five-year writer’s block of attempts to compose original material. This writing journey has been long and frustrating, yet intriguing and the outcome has been worth the wait. “I wish it could have clicked a quarter-century ago, but it wasn’t the right time,” says the drummer, bandleader, writer, and composer. “And I didn’t understand how to transfer my inspirational moments onto paper. Partial written melodies, different composition methods and a few pinnacle events all lined up and then it happened for one song. A second attempt and it worked! Third time was lucky and then a few months later four more came along quite quickly with another written the day before going into the studio.”

The song styles meander through varying melody and harmony with an emphasis on rhythm, groove, and feel. These songs are new, refreshing, and feel-good works with the utmost attention to musicality. Hansen has featured many talented musicians during his nightly performances at Houston’s Restaurant in New Orleans since 2006 and each member performs these new songs uniquely and creatively. “It is such an amazing feeling to sit back and lay down a groove behind so many talented musicians performing my songs. Some say they are hard and with each performance they find and open new nuances that are pure enjoyment for everyone.”

Drummer David W. Hansen, pianist Jordan Baker and bassist Brian Quezergue are featured on this album and first came together several years ago on David’s nightly performance. This album of all originals by Hansen touch on personal themes with songs written about his family and life experiences. You might catch a hint from the song titles but also note that Hansen has written words with possible vocal renditions appearing on future albums.

Quezergue’s official musical studies began in early 1990’s at NOCCA, the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and the Jazz and Heritage School of Music with instruction from Clyde Kerr, Jr., Edward “Kidd” Jordan and Elton Heron. Unofficially, he began during home-life and attending gigs and studio sessions with his father, Dr. Wardell Quezergue, a legendary composer and arranger. In Hansen’s trio, Brian began performing on upright bass, but took leave to focus on electric bass for his own recording project. In a bind, Hansen brought in Quezergue with his six-string Smith electric bass and realized its overwhelmingly musical sound and feel. “Upright is still a first choice, but when you hear Brian perform, it’s a no-contest instant decision.” says Hansen.

Jordan has been performing with Hansen for more than a few years and is featured on the 2015 “Then and Now” Garden District Trio album. Alumni of the esteemed University of New Orleans Jazz program with a Master of Music in Jazz Studies, Baker is the ultimate contemporary jazz pianist. His performance, interpretation, and stylings are uniquely fresh, creative, and musical.

Upward was recorded at the esteemed “Studio in the Country” in Bogalusa, LA, which is an acoustically designed slab to completion studio built in 1972. An all-star roster of internationally famous talent has recorded and/or mixed multi-platinum records at this location. Ben Mumphrey, chief engineer, set the mics, mixed, recorded and mastered our album. Words can’t describe how it felt to set-up, perform and record in this studio. “… the experience was pure pleasure,” says Hansen.
David could talk praise on the band members, engineer and recording process all night long but it’s time to hit the play button, sit back, drive safely, work out, or find your music listening area and enjoy.

A cornerstone of the Smithsonian’s commitment to jazz, the SJMO, led by Conductor and Artistic Director Charlie Young, has performed for audiences across the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Its concerts, by the full orchestra and smaller groups, include transcribed works, as well as new arrangements, commissioned works and programs that illuminate the contributions of small ensembles and jazz masters who contributed to the development of American jazz and defined the music’s character. More information about the SJMO is available at http://americanhistory.si.edu/smithsonian-jazz.  And more information about Kurt Elling can be found at http://kurtelling.com/.

DAVE FRANK BEGINS A SERIES OF SOLO PIANO CONCERTS AND TEACHING TOURS TO CELEBRATE
LENNIE TRISTANO’S CENTENNIAL

The influential educator and virtuosic pianist will be paying tribute to his mentor and former teacher with a series of “Improve Your Improv” Seminars in 2019, kicking off in Boston in March

shem.gif
In his career, Dave Frank has recorded a series of stunning solo piano albums and, through his Dave Frank School Of Jazz, has inspired a countless number of aspiring musicians throughout the world.

Born and raised in Long Island, New York, at four Frank had his first piano lessons from his mother. He learned about jazz from John Larosa, his teacher for three years starting when he was 12. The turning point in his life came when he was 15 and met the legendary Lennie Tristano, starting a lengthy series of significant lessons.

An innovative pianist who matured during the mid-to-late 1940s, Lennie Tristano was also one of jazz’s great teachers. Dave remembers, “From him I gained a complete jazz foundation on piano. We went through a comprehensive curriculum that he developed that included technique, ear training, singing recorded solos, and all of the major concepts of improvisation from playing on tunes to improvising freely. I studied with Lennie for seven years and it was phenomenal. I basically learned everything about playing music in Lennie’s living room.”

While Dave performed at clubs on the jazz circuit in Long Island and Manhattan, he also began teaching when he was only 16 with Tristano as his model. He co-founded the New York School of Jazz with a few other musicians in 1983. For three years at the school (which had a recording studio), he taught jazz piano and improvisation on all instruments. Dave next served as an Associate Professor at Berklee College Of Music in the piano department from 1987-2006. “Being at Berklee was a great experience. I enjoyed teaching people from all over the world and during that period I studied with the great Charlie Banacos.  When I left Berklee in 2006, I moved to New York City and started the Dave Frank School Of Jazz.”

At first his school was run at the Yamaha dealership in Manhattan for three years. But by 2009, the landscape for teachers had changed due to the advancement of modern technology. “The Skype technology is fantastic for teaching jazz, particularly piano because of the visual nature of the instrument. While I will always give in person private lessons, these days I am working around 80% of the time with people all over the world via Skype, including students from the Philippines, China, Japan, Argentina and many other countries.”

Over time, Dave Frank has developed his own fresh, logical and innovative way of teaching jazz. “Many students have the creative impulse but they might have holes in their playing foundation that may prevent them from realizing their creative ideas. The first thing that everyone needs in order to play jazz is a complete foundation which consists of technique, theory and ear training. I set goals with my students and then give them a practical step-to-step way to achieve those goals. One needs a strong technique in order to transmit their creative ideas along with a complete working knowledge of jazz theory, harmony, chord scales, and other areas so as to be able to internalize the language of jazz. For six months to a year, I have students work on a gradual curriculum including a technical exercise, a theoretical exercise, and ear training exercises. Once the basic foundation is mastered, students can enjoy a lifetime of creativity and the ability to create their own music in the moment infinately. It’s a GROOVE!”

Dave has a long list of accomplishments. He wrote (with John Amaral) the best-selling jazz instruction book, Joy Of Improv (Hal Leonard). Its two volumes are a curriculum for aspiring jazz players. The follow-up project Breakthrough To Improv is a blues video that takes students through 15 different steps that introduce the elements and concepts of blues improvisation.

His brilliant solo piano playing is well showcased on six CDs: Solo Piano (Breeze), Power Of The Piano, Ballads and Burners, Turning It Loose!, Portrait Of New York (the latter four recorded for Jazzheads), and his most recent recording, Cookin’ In Concert  also on Jazzheads. As a Jazz Ambassador for the State Department for ten years, Dave had the opportunity to travel to many countries where he conducted workshops and performed at concerts including Spain, England, Holland, Belgium, Brazil, South Africa, Switzerland, Argentina, Nicaragua, Peru, Costa Rica, France, Canada and throughout the US. Along the way he has performed at the Winnipeg, Montreux, North Sea, Jazz Alive and Jazzheads Jazz Festivals.

Dave Frank has now been teaching jazz full time for over 47 years. His website, www.davefrankjazz.com, includes 44 free master classes that will be of great interest to musicians, each one being an in-depth class that deals with specific musical issues or the music of a particular musician. “I teach a lot of Lennie’s and Charlie Banacos’ concepts along with the ones that I have developed through the years.” His website has thus far had over 2.5 million views with an average of 1,000 views a day.

With Lennie Tristano’s birthday being March 19, Dave Frank looks forward to continuing his musical legacy in the best way possible. Included in his upcoming tours will be a week of master classes and concerts in Boston at Berklee, performing with tenor great Jerry Bergonzi, participating in a panel discussion about Lennie Tristano with altoist Lee Konitz (the most famous of Tristano’s students), and playing at an evening concert with Lee Konitz and Jimmy Halperin. After that Dave will be touring the United States with stops in Long Island, Dallas, Seattle, central Massachusetts, Wash DC and other areas of the country to be named soon, teaching and playing the music he loves. The fall will see Dave as guest teacher at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and doing a solo concert at the Opus Jazz club in Budapest, Hungary.

Dave Frank, who in addition to his solo concerts co-leads a quartet with tenor-saxophonist Richard Tabnik, looks forward to the future. “I love devoting time to helping students play jazz and develop their creative journey. The joy of teaching jazz is that a simple improv concept can often turn someone around right on the spot, immediately fixing many of their musical faults. It is a powerful feeling seeing other people’s abilities and music open up right on the spot! I’d like to continue doing what I’m doing now into the future, reaching as many people as possible through my playing and teaching. Playing jazz is a natural human ability for everybody!

To arrange an Improve Your Improv Seminar in your area, or to inquire about worldwide private skype lessons you can reach Dave directly at www.davefrankjazz.com. All 44 of his free master classes are available for anytime viewing at the Master Class archive on the website. The Dave Frank/Richard Tabnik Quartet plays live every month at Hari NYC in NYC. Check Dave’s website for details.

MULTIPLE-TIME GRAMMY NOMINEE

BOBBY SANABRIA JOINS WBGO

AS NEW HOST OF LATIN JAZZ CRUISE

shem.gif
Newark, February 28, 2019 – WBGO, the world’s premiere NPR jazz station, is excited to announce the new host of its longtime Latin jazz program, the Latin Jazz Cruise: multiple time Grammy nominee Bobby Sanabria. A drummer-bandleader, composer-arranger-conductor, documentary film producer, educator and activist, Sanabria will first appear as co-host of the program on Friday, March 1 at 9 p.m., alongside outgoing host, Awilda Rivera. He takes the reins as host the following Friday, March 8.

Latin Jazz Cruise, which airs Fridays from 9-11 p.m. on WBGO 88.3FM and WBGO.org, covers a wide spectrum of jazz, influenced by Latin America. Tomorrow night, Sanabria joins the program’s longest-running host, Awilda Rivera, as she signs off after 26 years. Rivera, who began at WBGO in 1982 as a volunteer and grew to be the voice of Latin jazz on the station, announced her retirement in 2018, with a live jam session broadcast.

A native son of the South Bronx, born to Puerto Rican parents, Sanabria has a track record as a leader spanning more than 25 years; his most recent album, West Side Story Reimagined, was widely acclaimed. He has also performed and recorded with many legends of Latin jazz , including Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Dizzy Gillespie, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Cándido, Larry Harlow, and the Godfather of Afro-Cuban jazz, Mario Bauzá. This vital firsthand experience promises an exciting new perspective for Latin Jazz Cruise.

“My relationship with WBGO goes back to when the station first started broadcasting jazz way back in 1979. I remember that I had just graduated from the Berklee College of Music and jazz radio in NYC had just suffered a major blow with the loss of another jazz radio station. WBGO was our savior and took on the task of being the voice of our music,” Sanabria remembered. “Since those early days I’ve seen WBGO grow into a force of nature as it has become the gold standard in jazz radio, broadcasting America’s greatest art form in all of its multi-cultural diversity. The station has also championed mightily the work of musicians by not only playing our recordings but also producing concerts, special events and also, in conjunction with NPR, taping many historic concerts which they have broadcast.” Thinking about the impact WBGO has had on his own career, Sanabria stated, “WBGO was the first to play my recordings and bring me to the public’s attention as a leader.”

Sanabria is no stranger to hosting media, as he has been an associate producer and on-screen personality for  documentaries including The Palladium: Where Mambo Was King (2003), PBS’ From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale, (2006), Latin Music USA (2009) for PBS and, I Like It Like That – The Story of Latin Boogaloo (2017).

Reflecting on becoming the new host of Latin Jazz Cruise, Sanabria said, “I have been a longtime member, but now I have the privilege and honor of being able to give back in an even more important way by becoming the new host of the Latin Jazz Cruise. I have big shoes to fill. From its original host Chico Mendoza, to Alfredo Cruz, to the legendary Awilda Rivera, I hope to continue the incredible standard they have set for the show and more importantly, the music.”

About WBGO
WBGO is the global leader in jazz radio, broadcasting from the jazz capital of the world. Founded in 1979, WBGO is a publicly-supported cultural institution that preserves and elevates America’s music: jazz and blues. WBGO reaches a weekly audience of more than 400,000 in the New York/New Jersey metro area via 88.3FM. Through programs such as Jazz Night in America, produced in partnership with NPR and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and WBGO’s position as content provider to NPR, its reach extends to millions more across the country. From its home base of Newark, New Jersey, Public Radio station WBGO has long been an anchor institution in community engagement through its partnerships, concerts, education and news programming.
