MJ Featured In Hot House Magazine

Even in the diverse world of jazz vocalists, MJ Territo pops out as unique, difficult to categorize, and quite superb. Sporting a rich, slightly lower-pitched vocal range, MJ offers a phrasing that places her comfortably in the jazz, cabaret and Broadway worlds, and her singing recalls an uncommon set of vocalists from Frank Sinatra to Carol Sloane to even Mabel Mercer. Similarly, in her projects she consistently makes intelligent and unusual decisions in repertoire and approach, perhaps best encapsulated on her most recent album, Ladies Day (Jollie Mollie Music), by her gorgeous duet with harpist Brandee Younger on the Dave Grusin composition “True.” For fans of the entire map of the Great American Songbook and its many unusual side routes, MJ’s performance with the Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is not to be missed.
– Seton Hawkins

Critics love MJ’s CD “Ladies Day”
Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful, and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.”
—Scott Yanow

All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, because these standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the  less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly  delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!
–C. Michael Bailey

A 40-plus year institution in Manhattan, Vince Giordano has been playing the music of the 1920s and ‘30s – jazz and the Great American Songbook – now for twice as long as those decades actually lasted. Since 2013, he and his eleven-piece band, the Nighthawks, have been playing twice weekly upstairs at this midtown Mexican restaurante. (And yes, in deference to their host, they occasionally essay a Pan American-style number, like Benny Moten’s “Rhumba Negro,”  Ben Selvin’s “Mama Inez” or “The Peanut Vendor” by Don Azpiazú.)  But Wherever the Nighthawks play, it’s invariably the greatest hang in town: for three hours, you get to listen (or dance, if you dare) to the music of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Bix Beiderbecke – as well as Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, and George Gershwin (their foxtrot arrangement of the “Rhapsody in Blue” is a solid sender) – played with dynamic energy and unflagging inspiration. The band’s key soloists – trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist Jim Fryer, clarinetist and saxophonist Dan Levinson, hot violinist Andy Stein – all capture the spirit of the era while subjugating it to their own personalities, taking their cue from the relentless drive of their indefatigable leader, who often seems to be playing all three of his bass instruments (bass saxophone, tuba, and acoustic string bass) at once while simultaneously singing and spieling about the music’s history. You can see and hear the Nighthawks in over a dozen movies, including all the recent period-set films of Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen, as well as all five seasons of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (which yielded a Grammy-winning soundtrack album for Mr. Giordano) and Amber Edwards’s sparkling new documentary, Vince Giordano: There’s a Future in the Past. But the real experience is to catch them in person on a Monday or Tuesday evening, where you never know who (from Elvis Costello & Diana Krall to Michael Feinstein to Mel Brooks) will drop in, apart from the ghosts of Gershwin and Ellington, who are already in regular attendance.

Dee Dee Bridgewater & Nicki Parrott: Double Bill @ Birdland

Dee Dee Bridgewater & the Memphis Soulphony
Nicki Parrott Trio
Birdland

through Saturday, August 10

shem.gif

Back in what we now call “the golden age of jazz,” from the 1930s to the 1960s, you never went to a jazz club, like Birdland, the Village Vanguard or the Village Gate, just to see one band: usually there were at least two acts on the bill. (ie, the famous combination of the Miles Davis Quintet and the Shirley Horn Trio at the Vanguard.) Now that Birdland has a downstairs – the lovely Birdland Theater opened a year ago, the equivalent of the double feature is back – especially since major domo and host Gianni Valenti often invites patrons to stay for the next show at no additional cover charge.  It makes for a really satisfying evening of music, and the combination of Dee Dee Bridgewater, the Michigan born musical polymath, and Nicki Parrott, the Australian-born bassist who now doubles as a superlative singer, is a particularly welcome one.

You might think it was with some degree of archness that in the very same year (2017) that Ms. Bridgewater was named as an NEA Jazz Master – and very deservedly so – she released what some might perceive as her least jazzy album yet, Memphis…Yes, I’m Ready (Okeh Records, the current jazz division of Sony).  This is a set of hardcore soul songs from the 1960s, centered around artists, bands, songwriters and musicians from Memphis, such as “I Can’t Get Next to You,” associated with Al Green (as well as the Temptations), “Goin’ Down Slow,” “B.A.B.Y.” and two early Elvis Presley classics, “Hound Dog” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”  Yet though the material comes from the soul songbook, the very notion of interpretations (as opposed to “covers”) is still a fundamental precept of jazz, and so is the way Ms. Bridgewater interacts with the audience and creates something new in the moment.  There’s a Gospel influence in there, no doubt, but these are all part of what jazz is – not any other kind of music.  Even in her soul music project, Ms. Bridgewater is still fundamentally a jazz artist.

Ms. Bridgewater has an ambitious band, with four rhythm, two horns, and two back-up singers (whose ranks she joins for some choreography that’s both erotic and genuinely hysterical).  Contrastingly, Ms. Parrott works with just a trio, but this is the perfect forum for her, with the heroically musical and entertaining drumming of Alvin Atkinson and the inspired harmonies of pianist John DiMartino.  Her singing has evolved to the point where she could be described as something like an Australian Blossom Dearie, and as a bandleader she knows well how to partition the melodic responsibility between her bass and her voice, not to mention Mr. DiMartino and Mr. Atkinson.  I liked her Trio so much that I stayed for both shows on Thursday night, which were largely different; however, she did play her reinterpretation of the Brill Building classic “On Broadway” (which she associates with George Benson rather than the Drifters) on both sets, and I was glad to hear it both times. No lyrics were necessary here, Ms. Parrott did her singing with her bass, and Mr. DiMartino played his piano part mostly en clave, as if to remind us that Broadway hardly stops at Times Square, but rather it goes way up above Spanish Harlem clear to the Heights.

“Dave we need to complete the Trilogy!” said Stefan Harris as we drove to a gig last summer. We had recorded Eight Track with my working trio of Jared Gold and McClenty Hunter back in 2013 and Eight Track II followed three years later with the great Steve Nelson on vibraphone.  A Trilogy? I didn’t have to be asked twice!

The Eight Track projects have been not only fun, but musically rewarding. Playing these classic melodies from the ’70s has been a great way to connect with people and bring more people to the music, whether they remember the songs or are just discovering them. I enjoy the challenge of finding my way into these tunes by putting my own stamp on them through the arrangements and playing. (Besides, I had an Eight Track player in my van in high school and spent many hours listening to everything from Miles and Coltrane to Santana and Marvin Gaye!)

This time out we tackle Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up”, The Temptations’ “Papa was a Rollin’ Stone”, Steely Dan’s “Pretzel Logic”, and two tunes by Stevie Wonder: “Too High” and Joy Inside My Tears”. The Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun” and Burt Bacharach’s “This Guys In Love” show that a great melody is a great melody no matter the decade. And Stefon does Roy Ayer’s classic “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” proud before we start to wind down with Marvin Gaye’s “After the Dance.” Throughout I have to tip my hat to these outstanding musicians and friends who brought this music to life: Stefan Harris, Jared Gold, McClenty Hunter and Mayra Casales.

In these crazy times, I hope our takes on these classic songs can bring some joy and positivity into the world. The Trilogy is complete – Viva Eight Track!

Dave Stryker

Here’s what people are saying so far:

“Stryker Strikes Again!!” William Johnson KPOV

“Stryker remains as ruggedly stylish and direct as ever… one thing remains true and constant: the strength of the song itself remains paramount. Stryker doesn’t bend the originals into unrecognizable shapes or use the art of the cover as a means for intellectual exercise. He plays the songs in relatively straightforward manners, leaves space for solos, and lets the magic take shape on its own. And that, in a nutshell, is his formula for success when dealing with this terrain. While this may mark the end of Stryker’s Eight Track projects, it’s doubtful that (m)any would complain if a fourth happened to find its way to the marketplace. As fun dates go, these are hard to beat. “ Dan Bilawsky / All About Jazz

“When it comes to ultracool & hip jazz, guitarist Dave Stryker is at the very TOP of the list… what an absolutely fun album. The album opener, “Move on Up“, alone, makes it well worth purchasing the full album. Jared’s organ just KICKS IT OUT on this superb tune!  Stevie Wonder’s “Too High” is one of the best performances of the tune I’ve ever heard. The recording is just flawless.  I give Dave & his superb players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.99 out of 5.” Dick Metcalf, editor, Contemporary Fusion Reviews

“Dave Stryker’s third Baby Boomer covers album is, quite frankly, a can’t-lose proposition. That’s ‘cos the melodies are rich with timeless soul and everyone in the band are veteran masters who can effortlessly kick back and take an easygoing approach that these songs need to make them as engaging in these interpretations as they are with the originals.” S.Victor Aarons / Something Else Reviews

“It’s all in the special sauce.  In which we find guitar man Stryker paying tribute to his youth by hitting it on everything that was playing in your car 45 years ago when we were young and eclectic.  A gift shop record in lesser hands, the set list in impeccable again and the on board jazzbos are enjoying  being there for the trip—all of whom are no slouches either.  Tasty fun that means so much more as Stryker and company dig beneath the commercial veneer for the real deal.“  CHRIS SPECTOR, Editor and Publisher

What The Press Is Saying About One Night at Chris’:

“DAVE WILSON QUARTET/One Night at Chris’:  A protean sax man that can lead his crew through anything, he smokes on originals and covers that you wouldn’t think fit the format—but they do.  Lively and crackling, they are turned on by the live Philly audience and make sure they heat up the night properly.  Tasty stuff that makes you wish you were there.”
CHRIS SPECTOR, Editor and Publisher, Midwestrecord.com

The Dave Wilson Quartet mixes things up on “One Night at Chris’”
“…What is noteworthy is the choice of songs that The Dave Wilson Quartet have covered. All of the cover songs are unexpected. Each offers listeners a bit of insight into the style and perhaps the inspiration of the quartet members…The songs included on “One Night at Chris’” have been captured in one take – – no overdubs, no retakes. The result is a recording that crackles with liveliness and a verve that resonates with the traditions of jazz, even when the group is taking on songs that are from rock and pop traditions….
“Biggest Part of Me” is sublimely beautiful.“Biggest Part of Me” is a masterful re-working of a classic and fun to listen to…”
Dodie Miller-Gould, lemonwire.com

“…This is a great fusion of straight-ahead and exploratory jazz, highly accessible, and packed full of the energy one expects in a live recording.”
-Jim Hynes Makingascene

“Bands occasionally have a terrible night or encounter the dreaded “gig from hell.” On the other hand, well-rehearsed groups also have exceptional nights when everything clicks. The Dave Wilson Quartet experienced the latter when they played Chris’ Jazz Café in Philadelphia in March 2018…While the quartet really spotlights Dave Wilson’s sax, he and Kirk Reese (piano) trade lyrical improvised expressions, with colorful shading and distinctive twists, in this quartet’s very pleasant set of jazz.
-Joe Ross, Roots Music Report

*****Live from Chris’ Jazz Café in Philadelphia!
“Dave Wilson, a prominent jazz saxophonist/band leader/composer/educator in the Pennsylvania area, brings his quartet’s recording a sense of immediacy…
Fine sound from fine musicians with the added excitement of a live performance!”
Grady Harp, Amazon

“…Smooth but still crackling with energy, at ease but still ‘on’ the occasion, Wilson’s mob offers patterns of complexity that dance around the central themes. Playful too –…Clever stuff.” – Paul Rigby The Audiophile Man

“”It was a good night” and for this simple reason the recording of the concert has now been published on disc. Dave Wilson’s quartet is in a state of grace, full of energy, a continuous flow of ideas from one piece to another. Dave Wilson’s quartet is in a state of grace, full of energy, a continuous flow of ideas from one piece to another….The disc works to perfection showing how jazz, made by inspired musicians, can engulf material that comes from the world of pop and current rock without giving up the swing.”
Vittorio Lo Conte Musicboom

The recording is a document of one evening of music recorded live, no overdubs, no second takes and with all the nuances, surprises and magic known as Jazz. We wanted to take some our best work, including own compositions and original, creative interpretations of others work, most but not all featured on previous recordings (dating back to the early 2000’s), and present this in a live context. Utilized a long-standing working band with a rhythm section composed of East Coast and nationally known all-stars, we succeeded at capturing the virtuosity and magic of “One Night At Chris’”.

Dave Wilson is a leading jazz saxophonist, recording artist, band leader, composer, and educator in the Central PA/ Delaware Valley area, with a very active venue and festival schedule as both a leader of his own groups and as a sideman. He is very active playing at restaurants and establishments in South Central Pennsylvania, and play or have played in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and New York City. The Dave Wilson Trio or Quartet offers high caliber, compelling, contemporary Jazz music with top notch, nationally and internationally known personnel known for their exciting improvisations, creative individualistic compositions, and unique arrangements of standards. Wilson has worked with the likes of pianists Mark Soskin, Jim Ridl, Phil Markowitz, Bobby Avey, Kirk Reese, bassists Tony Marino, Steve Varner, drummers Adam Nussbaum, Bill Goodwin, Dan Monaghan, and Marko Marcinko,. He has also shared the stage with the likes of Tim Warfield, Steve Giordano, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Lou Soloff (BS & T), the late Steve Marcus, Conrad Herwig, Gary Smulyan, Steve Smith (from Journey), among others The Dave Wilson Quartet has four great CDs out under their own name. The latest, “There Was Never” (ZOHO), featuring an all-star lineup of Bobby Avey-Piano, Tony Marino-Bass, Alex Ritz-Drums (members of the Dave Liebman Group), for 6 weeks in 2016 was in the top 50 of the nation-wide Jazz Weekly Jazz Radio Countdown, reaching a high of #18 in the nation! It was in the Top 11 in Philadelphia’s WRTI New Releases, for several weeks, reaching a high of number 5. The track “Cassidy” was #13 in WRTI’S countdown for the top 100 in 2016. There was also a great review in the February 2016 issue of famed Downbeat Magazine.  His latest recording “One Night At Chris”, recorded live at the famed Chris’ Jazz Café in Philadelphia and released in May of 2019, features PA all stars in Dave’s working ensemble including Kirk Reese-Piano (East Coast All-Star, educator), Tony Marino (from the Dave Liebman Quartet), and Dan Monaghan (Top Philadelphia drummer), and promises to be another top hit, capturing all the intensity of a live performance on an exceptionally good night!

In their latest CD, Introspection (Jazzheads), guitarist Roni Ben-Hur and bassist Harvie S present a captivating album of classic material presented in rare versions for guitar trio. The album features great, often underplayed pieces by iconic jazz composers: Thelonious Monk (“Introspection”), Billy Strayhorn (“Blood Count”), Joe Henderson (“Serenity”), Tadd Dameron (“Focus”), Kenny Dorham (“Asiatic Raes”), George Shearing (“Conception”) and Neal Hefti (“Repetition”). With Roni having such a distinctive way in Brazilian music, the guitarist also added to the mix a pair of lilting pieces by Baden Powell (“Deixa”) and Ary Barroso (“Pra Machucar Meu Coração”). Rounding out the selection is an unsung number from the Jerome Kern songbook, “Nobody Else But Me.” Introspection brims with subtly insistent swing and insinuating melodies, the rapport between the players intimate and conversational.

You can see a video preview for the album on

“The chemistry found on the album is a unique, uncompromising force to behold.  4 Stars.”   Hilary Brown  Downbeat Magazine

“Introspection is a record to play on repeat, it’s warm, glowing allure like candlelight in a room. The players reach into themselves as per the album title of Introspection, but there’s also the sense of communion that the best records often have.  Together, all three musicians make this record one to die for.”  Jazz Da Gama

The fluid nature of their rapport, honed together over the years, sharpens this album’s appeal.  WBGO, Jazz 88.3

The strength on this album is the gorgeous and melodic tones delivered by the two leaders.  Doug Ramsey Jazz Weekly

It’s just a matter of tradition that in “musical comedy” the word “musical” comes before the word “comedy” – when, as with anything Rita Rudner is involved in, you can expect the emphasis to be on the comedy.  This is a very funny story about a slightly-later-than usual midlife marital crisis in which the songs serve to delineate character and move the story along whereas, in contrast to many shows, the spoken scenes are mainly there to deliver the jokes.  Many numbers are performed by an off-stage singer-guitarist (Jason Feddy, who wrote the words and music) which give the scenes the feeling of a contemporary Hollywood rom com in which the feels of the characters are paralleled by the use of some familiar song on the soundtrack.   Although some aspects of the plot feel familiar, the story itself is ultimately unpredictable – especially the second act – and, most importantly, we never see the jokes coming.  Humor is the main ingredient here, but it’s very tuneful and even touching along the way.  Ms. Rudner and her husband, Martin Bergman, wrote the book, and Mr. Bergman also directs; Ms. Rudner co-stars with Robert Yacko, Kelly Holden Bashar, and Brian Lohmann.

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
 Antonio Carlos Jobim

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”
Billy Hart

“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira.  He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.”

Grassroots Homegrown Jazz Festival Raises Hudson Valley’s Profile

August 8 – 11 is the 10thseason for The Hudson Valley Jazz Festival.   Arturo O’Farrill, Wallace Roney, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Dave Liebman, Buster Williams and Lenny White have appeared over the years. But the mission for this series is to raise the profile of the region’s deep resource of talent deserving wider recognition.

Jazz reminds us that there are dedicated musicians whose names may not have graced the marquis and limelight, yet offer high quality art.  Some have worked with Dave Holland, Miles Davis or Joe Lovano and others are your neighbor, shop owner or local venue performer.  What they all have in common is a lifelong study and proficiency of this great music.    The Hudson Valley Jazz Festival offers a majority of free performance in cafes, restaurants, parks, performing arts centers, libraries, farms and galleries. From a jazz brunch to a late-night show to an emerging young artist at a local winery.

21 shows in 14 towns in 4 days featuring 100+ musicians. From traditional to fusion, bop, improv, original music, latin jazz and several ensembles led by women vocalists.  The festival is true to jazz and offers a high-level sampling of Hudson Valley’s working talent.

About the album, “One Day Wonder:”

The Terraza Big Band, whose new debut album for Outside in Music is One Day Wonder, is striking from every angle, a marvelous exploration of the possibilities of the big-band format. There’s the composing-arranging of its co-founders and co-leaders, the alto saxophonist Michael Thomas and the bassist Edward Perez, full of resolutely modern jazz-orchestral harmony, inventive forms and a gamut of rhythms, from 21st-century swing to an encyclopedia of Latin-based styles. There’s the lineup, including many of the best young jazz-trained musicians in New York City, given ample opportunity to express their signature voices throughout the leaders’ generous charts. Then there are the X factors that might be a bit harder to define but are crucial nonetheless: an elastic, adaptable feel in the arrangements and performances that somehow gives this 18-piece outfit a small-group vibe; the sense that these high-caliber musicians are utterly engaged with and trusting of the leaders’ vision; a narrative approach to concert and album programming that gives a set of music the dimensions of an excellent film.

Of course, a project of this magnitude could only have developed in a very special place—in this case a venue special enough to give the group its moniker. Since its beginnings in the summer of 2015, Thomas and Perez’s band has held down a regular gig at Terraza 7, an extraordinary club in Queens, located between the neighborhoods of Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. Founded by Freddy Castiblanco, a Colombian-born former doctor and veteran community organizer, Terraza 7 features a wide range of global music and jazz—its schedule of various Latin-based ensembles is among the strongest in New York—and provides a place for artists and neighbors to coalesce around issues of social justice. “Terraza 7 is a mission for Freddy,” Perez says.

On the first Thursday of every month, the members of the Terraza Big Band become a part of that community, participating in an open rehearsal and then giving a full-length concert. To hear the band on its home turf is to receive an audiophile-worthy live-music experience. Seated directly across from the musicians, who are arranged on the venue’s transparent, loftlike stage that looms over the bar, every tricky form, every precision section part, every stout Cuban-influenced bassline, every heroic horn solo feels stunningly vibrant. The crowd—locals, jazz heads and curiosity-seekers alike—responds in kind. As the New York Timeswrote in a piece on the current renaissance of New York-based large ensembles, “the [Terraza Big Band’s] audience was fully on board, but the ideas were entirely new.”

One Day Wonder, gorgeously recorded at Systems Two studio and conducted by Miho Hazama, herself a brilliant large-ensemble composer and bandleader, is essentially a virtual-reality jaunt to that great-sounding wedge-shaped room in Queens. It opens with Thomas’ “Zed,” a pointedly modern—think Kurt Rosenwinkel and Mark Turner at their most invitingly melodic—but highly playable piece. Perez’s “A New Leaf” follows, a seamless meld of buoyant Colombian-informed rhythm, graceful melody and symphonic ideas applied to jazz orchestration. “One Day Wonder,” a challenging composition crafted by the band’s tenor saxophonist Troy Roberts, is another example of Thomas’ ability as an arranger to take thrilling small-group jazz and magnify it to big-band proportions—remarkably, with no loss in urgency or expressivity. “Without Doubt” takes its title from Thomas’ experience writing it—an easygoing, almost intuitive process where everything seemed to fall into place. Here the tune provides a showcase for Thomas’ kinetic yet serene composing and some elegant solo work by Roberts, pianist Luis Perdomo and trumpeter Dave Neves.

The next two pieces dig into Perez’s life experience. His “Pasar el Tiempo, Aunque Fugaz, Contigo,” propelled by danceable rhythms and splashed with vivid colors, is a big-band update of an older number, written to reflect the excitement and euphoria that accompanied a romance Perez traversed in his 20s. “I’m 40 now,” he says with a laugh. “I wanted to see if I could retell a story from earlier in my life, and maybe tell it with a little more nuance.” “Flights of Angels,” featuring at its core Perez’s breathtaking solo bass work, is a mediation on a surreal, out-of-body encounter in the street with some especially ghostlike fog. Thomas’ midtempo swinger “Longing” contrasts odd phrases and plenty of chord changes with wide-open harmonic space for expert blowing, including a master class of a solo from the legendary trombonist John Fedchock. Perez’s “Me Lo Dijo Mi Primo” also finds plenty of inspiration in fantastic extended blowing over simple harmony—this time it’s tenorman John Ellis out front—as well as an invaluable lesson in clave that Perez learned from his fellow bassist Alain Pérez. (It’s all about the downbeats.) “Think Tank” closes the record with Thomas’ au courantvision, a small-group postbop burner writ large. Throughout One Day Wonder, many other soloists step up, among them guitarist Alex Wintz, alto saxophonist Roman Filiú, percussionist Samuel Torres and Thomas, whose fiery composure as a player evokes everyone from beboppers like Phil Woods to such bold modernists as Miguel Zenón and David Binney. Other nonpareil players interpret the co-leaders’ charts with aplomb: Andy Gutauskas, on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet; trumpeters Sam Hoyt, Alex Norris and Josh Deutsch; trombonists Matt McDonald and Nick Vayenas and bass trombonist Jennifer Wharton and drummer Jimmy Macbride.

A graduate of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where he attended on a full scholarship, Thomas also earned a master’s in jazz performance from New England Conservatory, where he received the jazz department’s sole Presidential Scholarship. While at NEC, his composition “Refract” won a DownBeatStudent Music Award. Thomas’ debut album, The Long Way, was released in April of 2011. That same year, he moved to New York City to study at Juilliard and hit the ground running. Today he’s appeared as a sideman on more than 20 recordings, including Miguel Zenón’s Grammy-nominated 2014 big-band release, Identities Are Changeable, and is a member of Dafnis Prieto’s big band. While maintaining his work as a much sought-after educator and composer, he’s performed with such luminaries as Maria Schneider, Dave Liebman, Wayne Shorter, Nicholas Payton, Ryan Truesdell, Randy Brecker, John Hollenbeck, Jason Palmer, Brian Blade, Gunther Schuller, John Patitucci and Jason Moran.

Perez garnered bandstand experience in Boston as well, while studying math at Harvard University. He later spent two years in Lima, Peru, performing with and learning from Afro-Peruvian musical royalty including Grammy-winners Eva Ayllón and Juan Medrano “Cotito.” As a bassist he’s shared stages with Lee Konitz, Greg Osby, Seamus Blake, Lionel Loueke, Kenny Werner, Jason Palmer, Paquito D’Rivera, Ignacio Berroa and Arturo O’Farrill, in whose Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra he’s appeared often in recent years. His recording credits include the pianist Hector Martignon’s Grammy-nominated Latin-jazz album Second Chance, and his music has been performed by the likes of Berroa, the Silkroad Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma, Alan Gilbert, Cristina Pato and Jorge Pardo. A respected educator as well, he’s taught privately at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and has held ongoing teaching positions at other institutions.

Thomas and Perez connected in Boston, where they’d returned to play a mutual friend’s gig. They ended up becoming roommates in New York for a time—the perfect incubator in which to work rapidly and fruitfully on new music and fuse Thomas’ deep modern-jazz interests with Perez’s Latin-oriented mastery. “We first talked about just getting some friends together to read through some charts, but we were having some really strong espresso,” Perez recalls, chuckling. “Then we were like, well, if we do that, we should do a gig.”

“When the band started,” Thomas adds, “we wanted to play with our favorite players. We were living together, and we were cranking out new charts all the time. We were sharing these ideas with each other and then taking them to the monthly gig, learning from each other.”

It’s hard to believe that the longtime jazz wunderkind is turning 80 next year, but it’s a source of great joy to realize that one of the all time great jazz composer-bandleaders (much like his fellow Miles Davis vet and frequent collaborator, Wayne Shorter) is still very much with us, and active as ever.  Seventy years ago, Hancock was already making waves as a classical piano prodigy in his native Chicago, and quickly graduated to the big time when he joined the legendary Miles Davis “’60s” quintet (alongside Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and Mr. Shorter). Both working with Davis and in a concurrent series of his own albums for Blue Note Records, Mr. Hancock stretched the musical boundaries of jazz, experimenting with modal style (jazz improvisation based on modes rather than traditional western chords), sometimes pushing it to the brink of free jazz, and other avant-garde notions.  Next, and again, both with Davis and on his own, Hancock was then part of the movement to incorporate electronic instruments and elements of rock music into jazz, which he achieved with both characteristic creativity and considerable popular success.  Since the early ’60s, Herbie Hancock has been a transcendent beacon for all contemporary American music, and it’s only fitting for him to share the bill with the contemporary multi-instrumentalist and singer Thundercat, who also draws on a wide range of genres, including jazz and funk.

Mr. Hancock’s band features Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, James Genus on bass, Lionel Loueke on guitar and multi-instrumentalist Terrace Martin.
