Barb Jungr is in a category all by herself – you might call it “contemporary cabaret,” if that isn’t a complete contradiction in terms. She has pioneered the art of taking popular songs from what, in cabaret or jazz terms, seems like the relatively recent past – songs from singer-songwriters like Leonard Cohen, and, most famously Bob Dylan – or even hardcore rockers like Bruce Springsteen or David Byrne – and does for them what traditional cabaret singers do for Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. She opens them up and interprets them, bringing a great deal of imagination to the task, which is often necessary since, unlike the Porter and Berlin songbooks, these pieces were not meant to have any life beyond the original composer-performer. Her many shows and albums focusing on the Dylan canon are modern classics, and this new project (created with pianist and collaborator John McDaniel), which offers on the songbook of Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner – better known as Sting – promises to be a revelation as well. (For a sample, there’s a video of Miss Jungr rehearsing “Until” – rendered as an old-school waltz ballad – on YouTube.) Count on Miss Jungr, working with gifted accompanist, co-vocalist and co-sar John McDaniel, to wrap these songs around her finger and find all the messages in every bottle.

About the album, “One Day Wonder:”

The Terraza Big Band, whose new debut album for Outside in Music is One Day Wonder, is striking from every angle, a marvelous exploration of the possibilities of the big-band format. There’s the composing-arranging of its co-founders and co-leaders, the alto saxophonist Michael Thomas and the bassist Edward Perez, full of resolutely modern jazz-orchestral harmony, inventive forms and a gamut of rhythms, from 21st-century swing to an encyclopedia of Latin-based styles. There’s the lineup, including many of the best young jazz-trained musicians in New York City, given ample opportunity to express their signature voices throughout the leaders’ generous charts. Then there are the X factors that might be a bit harder to define but are crucial nonetheless: an elastic, adaptable feel in the arrangements and performances that somehow gives this 18-piece outfit a small-group vibe; the sense that these high-caliber musicians are utterly engaged with and trusting of the leaders’ vision; a narrative approach to concert and album programming that gives a set of music the dimensions of an excellent film.

Of course, a project of this magnitude could only have developed in a very special place—in this case a venue special enough to give the group its moniker. Since its beginnings in the summer of 2015, Thomas and Perez’s band has held down a regular gig at Terraza 7, an extraordinary club in Queens, located between the neighborhoods of Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. Founded by Freddy Castiblanco, a Colombian-born former doctor and veteran community organizer, Terraza 7 features a wide range of global music and jazz—its schedule of various Latin-based ensembles is among the strongest in New York—and provides a place for artists and neighbors to coalesce around issues of social justice. “Terraza 7 is a mission for Freddy,” Perez says.

On the first Thursday of every month, the members of the Terraza Big Band become a part of that community, participating in an open rehearsal and then giving a full-length concert. To hear the band on its home turf is to receive an audiophile-worthy live-music experience. Seated directly across from the musicians, who are arranged on the venue’s transparent, loftlike stage that looms over the bar, every tricky form, every precision section part, every stout Cuban-influenced bassline, every heroic horn solo feels stunningly vibrant. The crowd—locals, jazz heads and curiosity-seekers alike—responds in kind. As the New York Timeswrote in a piece on the current renaissance of New York-based large ensembles, “the [Terraza Big Band’s] audience was fully on board, but the ideas were entirely new.”

One Day Wonder, gorgeously recorded at Systems Two studio and conducted by Miho Hazama, herself a brilliant large-ensemble composer and bandleader, is essentially a virtual-reality jaunt to that great-sounding wedge-shaped room in Queens. It opens with Thomas’ “Zed,” a pointedly modern—think Kurt Rosenwinkel and Mark Turner at their most invitingly melodic—but highly playable piece. Perez’s “A New Leaf” follows, a seamless meld of buoyant Colombian-informed rhythm, graceful melody and symphonic ideas applied to jazz orchestration. “One Day Wonder,” a challenging composition crafted by the band’s tenor saxophonist Troy Roberts, is another example of Thomas’ ability as an arranger to take thrilling small-group jazz and magnify it to big-band proportions—remarkably, with no loss in urgency or expressivity. “Without Doubt” takes its title from Thomas’ experience writing it—an easygoing, almost intuitive process where everything seemed to fall into place. Here the tune provides a showcase for Thomas’ kinetic yet serene composing and some elegant solo work by Roberts, pianist Luis Perdomo and trumpeter Dave Neves.

The next two pieces dig into Perez’s life experience. His “Pasar el Tiempo, Aunque Fugaz, Contigo,” propelled by danceable rhythms and splashed with vivid colors, is a big-band update of an older number, written to reflect the excitement and euphoria that accompanied a romance Perez traversed in his 20s. “I’m 40 now,” he says with a laugh. “I wanted to see if I could retell a story from earlier in my life, and maybe tell it with a little more nuance.” “Flights of Angels,” featuring at its core Perez’s breathtaking solo bass work, is a mediation on a surreal, out-of-body encounter in the street with some especially ghostlike fog. Thomas’ midtempo swinger “Longing” contrasts odd phrases and plenty of chord changes with wide-open harmonic space for expert blowing, including a master class of a solo from the legendary trombonist John Fedchock. Perez’s “Me Lo Dijo Mi Primo” also finds plenty of inspiration in fantastic extended blowing over simple harmony—this time it’s tenorman John Ellis out front—as well as an invaluable lesson in clave that Perez learned from his fellow bassist Alain Pérez. (It’s all about the downbeats.) “Think Tank” closes the record with Thomas’ au courantvision, a small-group postbop burner writ large. Throughout One Day Wonder, many other soloists step up, among them guitarist Alex Wintz, alto saxophonist Roman Filiú, percussionist Samuel Torres and Thomas, whose fiery composure as a player evokes everyone from beboppers like Phil Woods to such bold modernists as Miguel Zenón and David Binney. Other nonpareil players interpret the co-leaders’ charts with aplomb: Andy Gutauskas, on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet; trumpeters Sam Hoyt, Alex Norris and Josh Deutsch; trombonists Matt McDonald and Nick Vayenas and bass trombonist Jennifer Wharton and drummer Jimmy Macbride.

A graduate of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where he attended on a full scholarship, Thomas also earned a master’s in jazz performance from New England Conservatory, where he received the jazz department’s sole Presidential Scholarship. While at NEC, his composition “Refract” won a DownBeatStudent Music Award. Thomas’ debut album, The Long Way, was released in April of 2011. That same year, he moved to New York City to study at Juilliard and hit the ground running. Today he’s appeared as a sideman on more than 20 recordings, including Miguel Zenón’s Grammy-nominated 2014 big-band release, Identities Are Changeable, and is a member of Dafnis Prieto’s big band. While maintaining his work as a much sought-after educator and composer, he’s performed with such luminaries as Maria Schneider, Dave Liebman, Wayne Shorter, Nicholas Payton, Ryan Truesdell, Randy Brecker, John Hollenbeck, Jason Palmer, Brian Blade, Gunther Schuller, John Patitucci and Jason Moran.

Perez garnered bandstand experience in Boston as well, while studying math at Harvard University. He later spent two years in Lima, Peru, performing with and learning from Afro-Peruvian musical royalty including Grammy-winners Eva Ayllón and Juan Medrano “Cotito.” As a bassist he’s shared stages with Lee Konitz, Greg Osby, Seamus Blake, Lionel Loueke, Kenny Werner, Jason Palmer, Paquito D’Rivera, Ignacio Berroa and Arturo O’Farrill, in whose Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra he’s appeared often in recent years. His recording credits include the pianist Hector Martignon’s Grammy-nominated Latin-jazz album Second Chance, and his music has been performed by the likes of Berroa, the Silkroad Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma, Alan Gilbert, Cristina Pato and Jorge Pardo. A respected educator as well, he’s taught privately at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and has held ongoing teaching positions at other institutions.

Thomas and Perez connected in Boston, where they’d returned to play a mutual friend’s gig. They ended up becoming roommates in New York for a time—the perfect incubator in which to work rapidly and fruitfully on new music and fuse Thomas’ deep modern-jazz interests with Perez’s Latin-oriented mastery. “We first talked about just getting some friends together to read through some charts, but we were having some really strong espresso,” Perez recalls, chuckling. “Then we were like, well, if we do that, we should do a gig.”

“When the band started,” Thomas adds, “we wanted to play with our favorite players. We were living together, and we were cranking out new charts all the time. We were sharing these ideas with each other and then taking them to the monthly gig, learning from each other.”

Adrian Cox – ‘London’s most charismatic reeds man’
– Time Out

Dizzy’s New York – July 23rd 2019

shem.gif

Fans of Jazz at the Lincoln Center will know that Adrian first came to play in New York in 2018 to celebrate 30 years of Jazz at the Lincoln Centre, with host Glenn Close telling the crowd – “He blew the roof off London!” – The London show was a celebration of Benny Goodman, hosted by Wynton Marsalis, which earned Adrian rave reviews and his invitation to play in New York.

Adrian is now delighted to be bringing his quartet (feat. Joe Webb (piano); Gethin Jones (drums); Simon Read (bass)) to New York for his own show – Profoundly Blue, the music of Edmond Hall.

Having started playing clarinet aged six, by age 15 Adrian had left home to become a professional musician, playing hundreds of shows a year ever since.

Adrian has honed his talent with a whole range of musicians, playing jazz, blues, funk and ska, but jazz has always been his defining sound.

2017 saw Adrian drawing on the music of his favorite jazz clarinetist – Edmond Hall, to create the show ‘Profoundly Blue.’ Telling the story of his hero’s life and work. The band have been invited to record sessions on high profile BBC Radio shows with Cerys Matthews’ and Clare Teal earning them a loyal fan base.

With this high-profile support, “Adrian Cox presents ‘Profoundly Blue’” has now completed three extensive European tours. The band have produced two albums and sold over 2000 CDs. Both albums are now also available to stream on Spotify.

Being praised by Time Out as ‘London’s most charismatic reeds man’ – Cox is a warm and welcoming front man. Now taking more time to write and perform original music, 2020 will see the release of a new album of original music and a tour for Adrian Cox to finally present ‘Adrian Cox.’

The story continues…

Joined by a lush string section and a versatile rhythm section, Haas brings out the beauty and joy of the songs both instrumentally and vocally

Augie Haas is best known as a well-respected trumpeter, educator and composer. His most recent recording, Dream A Little Dream, is a change of pace. It balances jazz and doo-wop standards, featuring eight vocal tracks and three instrumentals. Haas displays an impressive range on trumpet as well as an effective voice that does justice to the lyrics that he interprets.

Joined by a 15-piece string section directed and arranged by Andrew Neesley, and a rhythm section that includes pianist Carmen Staaf, Augie Haas clearly had fun performing some of his favorite songs.

Among the set’s highlights are “Dream A Little Dream,” the swing era standard “Goody Goody,” a rich version of “Georgia On My Mind,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” and a sweetly sung “Earth Angel.” Also included is a mellow instrumental version of “Blackbird” (which has some prominent piano from Staaf), a soulful “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Stand By Me,” “Ooh Child,” “Stay,” and a surprising version of “Love Me Tender” that becomes a medium-tempo romp.

Augie Haas was born and raised in Milwaukee, earning degrees from Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of the Performing Arts and the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music Conservatory. Since settling in New York, he has been part of many big bands including those of Harry Connick Jr, Maria Schneider and Ryan Truesdell (the Gil Evans Project) plus the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Birdland Big Band. He has also worked with the orchestras of many Broadway shows. Haas has recorded with Schneider, Truesdell, the Frank Derrick orchestra, the South Nine Ensemble, the South Florida Jazz Orchestra in a trumpet summit in which he was joined by seven other trumpeters (including Wayne Bergeron, Brian Lynch and Greg Gisbert), and the John Vanore Orchestra.

In addition, Augie Haas has now led six albums for his Playtime Music label (The Llama, Doing It Augie Style, Baby Jazz, Endless, Have We Met plus Dream A Little Dream) and written the influential book Build Your Range for both trumpet and trombone.

The release of Dream A Little Dream casts new light on Augie Haas as an appealing singer in addition to his impressive trumpet playing and will appeal to a wide audience.

Every year, Jazz at Lincoln Center nominates four new members to their all-time Hall of Fame – which is not just an abstract concept, there literally is a hall of fame in JALC’s Rose Hall, christened in honor of the legendary  producer Nesuhi Ertegun.  As always, this year’s recipients are all highly worthy of the honor : Chick Webb, Dinah Washington, Cannonball Adderley, and Frank Trumbauer. All four will be inducted with a special musical celebration, rather than a formal ceremony, at Dizzy’s Club Coca cola.  The most surprising of the inductees, hands down, however, is Frank Trumbauer, the saxophone pioneer who in recent decades has, alas, earned the undesirable mantle of being one of the Great Forgotten Men of Jazz.  Trumbauer’s reputation is largely connected to two other giants, his longtime musical partner cornetist Bix Beiderbecke and Lester Young, the tenor saxophone colossus who consistently cited Trumbauer as his primary inspiration. (It doesn’t help that Trumbauer’s instrument of choice, a hybrid horn called the c-melody saxophone, has scarcely been taken seriously as a “real” jazz instrument for about 90 years now.)  Through his work with Beiderbecke, and his influence on Young, Trumbauer was one of the founding fathers of jazz lyricism and jazz narrative, the essential idea of telling a story in an improvised solo. It was Trumbauer’s particular innovation to make those stories incredibly personal and intimate – in a way that also suggests that he was also an influence on another colleague, the young Bing Crosby, and through him the legions of popular singers that Crosby inspired.  Listening to the classic recordings of “Bix and Tram” from the late 1920s is to hear the deep roots of modernism and cool jazz, not only Lester Young, but Miles Davis, Lee Konitz, Lennie Tristano, Stan Getz.  You don’t really understand Bix or Prez until you’ve listened to Tram, and doubtless the unique two-reed combination of veteran Ken Peplowski and feisty youngster Aaron Johnson will do justice to his considerable legacy.

Whether blowing bebop over a Mingus tune or freely improvising with Anthony Braxton, Michael Rabinowitz’s contributions have changed the conception of what the bassoon can do. Since graduating with a BFA in music performance from SUNY at Purchase in the late seventies Michael’s improvisatory skills opened the door for the bassoon to enter a variety of musical environments not traditionally associated with the instrument.

“Listening to a bassoon sing jazz is a distinctive pleasure. After hearing Bennie Maupin and Yusef Lateef tackle this instrument, I have a certain appreciation and expectation of the bassoon’s power and persuasion. Michael Rabinowitz appreciates and exploits the acoustic characteristics of the bassoon and this makes his “Uncharted Waters” CD a joy to my ears.”

MJ Featured In Hot House Magazine

Even in the diverse world of jazz vocalists, MJ Territo pops out as unique, difficult to categorize, and quite superb. Sporting a rich, slightly lower-pitched vocal range, MJ offers a phrasing that places her comfortably in the jazz, cabaret and Broadway worlds, and her singing recalls an uncommon set of vocalists from Frank Sinatra to Carol Sloane to even Mabel Mercer. Similarly, in her projects she consistently makes intelligent and unusual decisions in repertoire and approach, perhaps best encapsulated on her most recent album, Ladies Day (Jollie Mollie Music), by her gorgeous duet with harpist Brandee Younger on the Dave Grusin composition “True.” For fans of the entire map of the Great American Songbook and its many unusual side routes, MJ’s performance with the Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is not to be missed.
– Seton Hawkins

Critics love MJ’s CD “Ladies Day”
Downbeat 3-1/2 stars

MJ Territo is a veteran singer who is very much a storyteller. With a calm delivery and ear for poetry, she sticks to the lyrics of songs while giving them a gentle swing. As the set progresses, Territo’s versatility and subtle creativity grow. Her singing on “True” is beautiful, and she is properly fetching on Dearie’s “I’m Shadowing You.”
—Scott Yanow

All About Jazz:

Vocalist MJ Territo celebrates all things women on her ambitious and overdue Ladies Day. What this recording proves to be is one of the most attractive  standards sets imagined, because these standards… are not so standard. Territo… expertly guides this welcome romp through the  less known….This is a collection of finely composed songs expertly  delivered in a thoughtful and compelling production. Well done!

The Birdland Theater welcomes The Lew Tabackin Trio to the Stage!

Lew Tabackin, flutist and tenor saxophonist, is an artist of astonishing vision. His electrifying flute playing is at once virtuosic, primordial, cross-cultural, and passionate. His distinctive tenor sax style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt changes of mood and tempo, and purposeful fervor, all in the service of showing the full range of possibilities of his instrument – melodically, rhythmically, and dynamically. Without copying or emulating jazz greats of the past, Mr. Tabackin has absorbed elements into his style, ultimately creating his own sound and aura.

BRAZILIAN JAZZ LEGEND RETURNS!
Bossa Nova!  Samba!  Choro! Foro! Afro-Brazilian!

NILSON MATTA’S BRAZILIAN JAZZ VOYAGE
Jazz at the Maverick

Saturday, July 13   8pm

The mighty mighty NILSON MATTA,  bass/percussion
HARRY ALLEN, sax
HELIO ALVES, piano
ADRIANO SANTOS, drums

He’s the hottest Brazilian jazz bassist in the world and he will be exclusively ours this Saturday! Nilson Matta and his ensemble are returning to the Maverick to celebrate the music of the greatest Brazilian composers of all time – Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfá, Donato, Roberto Menescal, Mr. Matta himself, and we couldn’t be happier!

Widely celebrated as one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim internationalized Bossa Nova and, with the help of great American artists such as Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra, merged it with jazz in the 60s to create a new sound with remarkably popular success. As such he is lovingly known as the “Father of Bossa Nova”.

Considered one of the hottest bassists in the world, the Grammy-nominated Matta has also been a force in the evolution and popularity of Brazilian jazz. He has performed and recorded with renowned artists Paquito D’Rivera, Herbie Mann, Claudio Roditi, and many others. When Yo Yo Ma sought band members to fill his Brazilian project, Nilson was the obvious choice on bass. He recorded on “Obrigado Brazil”, “Live in Concert at Carnegie Hall” and “Yo Yo Ma & Friends”. All of these were Grammy winners.

A full house is expected so we highly recommend that patrons purchase reserved seats. We very much look forward to welcoming you to this marvelously Maverick evening!

shem.gif
Jazz singer-composer Ellynne Rey follows up on her previous A Little Bit Of Moonlight CD with a set of tunes dedicated to birds, The Birdsongs Project.

Joined by an impressive sextet, Rey performs bird songs by such writers as Blossom Dearie, Joni Mitchell, Hoagy Carmichael, Abbey Lincoln, Franz Schubert, and the Beatles, as well as her own compositions.

A devoted birdwatcher and photographer, the creative jazz singer and songwriter pays musical tribute to birds on Ellynne Rey The Birdsongs Project. For this wide-ranging set, she is joined by her longtime associate, pianist-organist Bennett Paster, guitarist Freddie Bryant, bassist Marcus McLaurine, both Anthony Pinciotti and Joe Strasser alternately on drums, trumpeter Alex Norris, and tenor-saxophonist Joel Frahm, plus guest percussionist Jacquelene Acevedo.

Whether the song is an original, a well-known standard or an obscurity, the singer comes up with fresh interpretations that will delight both bird lovers and jazz fans alike.

The album begins with Ms. Rey’s “Conversation With A Snowy Owl,” a jazz waltz that includes insightful lyrics and some fine scat-singing. She also wrote English lyrics to “The Crow” (die Krahe) which is an inspired transformation of a classic melody by Schubert, and some clever vocalese (“Bluejay & Cat”) over the changes to “How High The Moon.” The latter follows Parker’s “Ornitholog” and also has the singer holding her own trading fours with tenor saxophonist Frahm.

Other highlights of the colorful set include Blossom Dearie’s “I Thought I Heard A Hummingbird” (which is given a samba groove), “Skylark,” Joni Mitchell’s “Song To A Seagull,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Baltimore Oriole,” Abbey Lincoln’s “Bird Alone,”  “Flamingo” (which also features some fine tenor playing from Frahm), and “Blackbird.” A particular high point is experiencing the top-notch ballad singing on “The Peacocks,” which includes effortless interval jumps and some glorious high notes from Ellynne Rey.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Ellynne Rey has performed throughout New England and New York City. Whether as a singer or a lyricist, she is a skilled storyteller, equally adept at interpreting ballads as she is scatting through complex chord changes. A Little Bit Of Moonlight, Rey’s last release (featuring guitar great Gene Bertoncini), is also a highly enjoyable listening experience.

With the release of The Birdsongs Project, Ellynne Rey is heard in top form and clearly on the verge of gaining greater recognition for her inventive talents

“Duduka is a fantastic drummer, he has worked with me and I love the way he plays.”
 Antonio Carlos Jobim

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”
Billy Hart

“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira.  He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.”
