InterSchool Orchestras of New York
Presents Its Gala Celebration:

A TRIBUTE TO HOWARD JOHNSON
Featuring
Taj Mahal, Gravity, The Levon Helm horns,
the Beartones, and
Students of InterSchool Orchestras of New York

shem.gif
InterSchool Orchestras of New York (ISO) is proud to announce its 2019-2020 gala celebration, A Tribute to Howard Johnson, at Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall, September 18, 2019 at 7:30 pm. The special event will honor the musical legend, who, in his five-decade career, has played alongside luminaries in multiple genres and pioneered the voice of the tuba in jazz. The event will also feature the talents of two-time Grammy-winning musician Taj Mahal and students of ISO. All proceeds from the event will support financial aid and scholarships for ISO students.

“ISO’s mission — to serve all young musicians who want to participate, regardless of ability to pay — is deeply rooted in a long-standing commitment to the children of New York City,” said Karen Geer, executive director of ISO. “We are thrilled to pay tribute to Howard Johnson as a distinguished member of the city’s vibrant musical legacy. His tremendous career and innovations in music are a testament to the creativity, passion, and perseverance our students find through playing in an orchestra and carry with them throughout their lives.”

Gala honoree and performer Howard Johnson stated, “I am honored to be recognized by ISO for my contributions to the music community. Being a musician has opened so many doors in my life, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make that possible for a new generation of players. Because of their time in the orchestra, the talented students of ISO will go on to be lifelong supporters of the arts, no matter their career path. The funds raised as part of this event will help make that vision possible.”

A Tribute to Howard Johnson will raise funds to support scholarships and financial aid for ISO students. As a critical element of ISO’s mission to nurture young musicians, no child has ever been turned away because of financial need; 80% of ISO students receive some form of financial assistance, and the organization awards nearly $250,000 in scholarships each year.

Sponsorships for the gala start at $2,500 and include dinner and an evening of performances by Taj Mahal, Gravity, the Levon Helm horns, the Beartones, and members of the ISO Symphony.  For more information, visit isorch.org or call (212) 410-0370.  Tickets will be sold closer to the date of the event.

Howard Johnson is a legendary performer and mentor to a generation of African-American musicians. Over the past half century, Johnson has appeared on hundreds of albums playing tuba, baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, electric bass and other instruments with the giants of many genres. New York Times critic Nate Chinen credits Johnson as “the figure most responsible for the tuba’s current status as a full-fledged jazz voice.” Arriving in New York in the early ’60s, Johnson quickly gained notoriety as a sideman, recording and performing with Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Buddy Rich, Chick Corea, John Lennon, Paul Simon, and eventually hundreds of others. As a tubist, Johnson was the first to demand prominent solo roles for the instrument in jazz and was heavily involved in the design and manufacture of a specialist tuba for jazz playing. In 1975, Johnson was appointed the inaugural bandleader of The Saturday Night Live Band. He was also a long-time muse to innovators such as Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, Carla Bley, and George Gruntz, who created music to showcase the multi-instrumentalist’s abilities, and inspired him in his life-long quest to expand the range and repertoire of the less familiar instruments in jazz and popular music.

Sparking interest in music, especially in young people, has always been of paramount importance to Howard Johnson. It’s his life’s mission, likely fueled by his own passion for the art that first flared in junior high school. As a youngster, he spent every free minute in the band room, investigating the contents of the mysterious and intriguingly shaped instrument cases. He eventually tried his hand at many of the instruments he first encountered there, an opportunity to explore not afforded to many 21stcentury students, as arts programs in schools dwindle.

Supporting this voyage to musical discovery—and the self-discovery inherent in musical expression—is a mission dear to the heart of this legendary musician. Howard Johnson notes that while many people in the world have knowledge and talent, each individual has something unique and important to contribute, if given a chance: “What you give of yourself, there’s nothing that can beat that,” he declares.

Founded in 1972, the InterSchool Orchestras of New York creates opportunities for school-aged children in New York City to make music together through a tiered system of four orchestras, serving beginners to pre-conservatory-level players. ISO provides a nurturing environment where all children can realize their personal best, achieve high artistic standards, and share their music with the community. Under the leadership of executive director Karen Geer, ISO serves nearly 300 students from diverse backgrounds living in each of the five boroughs and surrounding areas. Generous financial aid and scholarships ensure that every child can participate.

In its distinguished 47-year history, ISO has collaborated with artists and ensembles including James Earl Jones, David Amram, Raúl Jaurena, Canadian Brass, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, and on stages including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the United Nations. Additionally, ISO has been featured on WNET’s (PBS) NYC-ARTS; participated in the Unity Youth Symphony as part of the HBO documentary Landfill Harmonic; and is a League of American Orchestras award winner as well as a member of the Channel 13 Hall of Fame.

ISO is supported in part by funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts.

shem.gif
Jazz singer-composer Ellynne Rey follows up on her previous A Little Bit Of Moonlight CD with a set of tunes dedicated to birds, The Birdsongs Project.

Joined by an impressive sextet, Rey performs bird songs by such writers as Blossom Dearie, Joni Mitchell, Hoagy Carmichael, Abbey Lincoln, Franz Schubert, and the Beatles, as well as her own compositions.

A devoted birdwatcher and photographer, the creative jazz singer and songwriter pays musical tribute to birds on Ellynne Rey The Birdsongs Project. For this wide-ranging set, she is joined by her longtime associate, pianist-organist Bennett Paster, guitarist Freddie Bryant, bassist Marcus McLaurine, both Anthony Pinciotti and Joe Strasser alternately on drums, trumpeter Alex Norris, and tenor-saxophonist Joel Frahm, plus guest percussionist Jacquelene Acevedo.

Whether the song is an original, a well-known standard or an obscurity, the singer comes up with fresh interpretations that will delight both bird lovers and jazz fans alike.

The album begins with Ms. Rey’s “Conversation With A Snowy Owl,” a jazz waltz that includes insightful lyrics and some fine scat-singing. She also wrote English lyrics to “The Crow” (die Krahe) which is an inspired transformation of a classic melody by Schubert, and some clever vocalese (“Bluejay & Cat”) over the changes to “How High The Moon.” The latter follows Parker’s “Ornitholog” and also has the singer holding her own trading fours with tenor saxophonist Frahm.

Other highlights of the colorful set include Blossom Dearie’s “I Thought I Heard A Hummingbird” (which is given a samba groove), “Skylark,” Joni Mitchell’s “Song To A Seagull,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Baltimore Oriole,” Abbey Lincoln’s “Bird Alone,”  “Flamingo” (which also features some fine tenor playing from Frahm), and “Blackbird.” A particular high point is experiencing the top-notch ballad singing on “The Peacocks,” which includes effortless interval jumps and some glorious high notes from Ellynne Rey.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Ellynne Rey has performed throughout New England and New York City. Whether as a singer or a lyricist, she is a skilled storyteller, equally adept at interpreting ballads as she is scatting through complex chord changes. A Little Bit Of Moonlight, Rey’s last release (featuring guitar great Gene Bertoncini), is also a highly enjoyable listening experience.

With the release of The Birdsongs Project, Ellynne Rey is heard in top form and clearly on the verge of gaining greater recognition for her inventive talents

Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers, students and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the modernist flame alive and pure, with a low flame burning in every note… [He’s] a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Ben-Hur – born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, now based in Harlem, New York – has released 11 albums as leader or co-leader, with Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” The Star-Ledger of New Jersey summed him up this way: “A deep musician, a storyteller, Ben-Hur works with a warm, glowing sound and has an alluring way of combining engaging notes with supple rhythm.”

In the January Issue of Hot House Magazine Seton Hawkins wrote -“A beloved fixture in the city’s performing and education scene, guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has for decades charmed New York with his beautifully fluid playing, crisp melodic lines and gorgeously polished tone. Noted for his mastery in both straight ahead jazz as well as in Brazilian musical styles, Roni has also forged exceptional collaborative relationships with a number of similarly versatile artists. One such relationship that stands out—his pairing with bassist Harvie S—received thoroughly deserved accolades in 2018 for the duo’s delicate and thoughtful album Introspection (Jazzheads).”

GARY LUCAS NEWS AND UPCOMING APPEARANCES

shem.gif
Gary Lucas plays “The Goddess” at TIFF—the Transylvania International Film Festival 6/5/19   photo by Nicu Cherciu

GARY LUCAS recently sold-out two consecutive live film score appearances— the first on June 5th at the Transylvania International Film Festival in the old Basilica in Cluj Romania,  where Lucas’s live solo guitar score for Wu Yonggang’s classic 1934 Chinese silent film “The Goddess” was featured as part of the Focus China film series in the old Orthodox Basilica. Gary received a standing ovation for his live score, and much praise from the China Film Archive team behind the restoration of the original film print:

“Thank you very much Mr. Gary Lucas for playing the soundtrack to “The Goddess” at TIFF. Gary Lucas uses his guitar plus his understanding of the film to show the essence of “The Goddess” vividly. At the climax of the film, his guitar score drives the audience to tears. This is the best time I’ve seen famous diva actress Ruan Lingyu‘s show-stopping scene driven by music outside of China. Lucas’ score promotes the integration of Eastern and Western cultures, so that European audiences can better understand the film.”

–Jiao Xiang, head of the China Film Archive restoration team, Beijing 2019.6.18

Gary then returned to NYC to play his live film score for “The Golem” (1920, d. Paul Wegener ad Carl Boese) on June 15th at a sold-out screening with a newly restored print of the film courtesy Kino-Lorber– part of an ongoing retrospective of his live film scores at The Metrograph, NYC’s premier arthouse cinema,. curated by Jacob Perlin and Robert Melvin Rubin.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Lucas’ score which he debuted with his collaborator Walter Horn at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria in 1989, and has since gone on to perform in 20 plus countries.

Next up: a free concert on the Joe’s Pub Outdoors Stage with his longstanding Chinese pop project THE EDGE OF HEAVEN,

featuring Feifei Yang on vocals and erhu and Jason Candler on sax—part of the Make Music New York Festival.

“lyrical and joyful. This music will bring a smile to your face!” —David Sanborn

Trumpeter/Flugelhornist Mark Morganelli brings his Jazz Forum All-Stars to Zinc on Tuesday, June 25 to celebrate his new CD, Brasil!

Mark Morganelli began presenting concerts in his first Jazz Forum loft at 50 Cooper Square in June 1979. By the time the second Jazz Forum loft closed its doors in April 1983, recordings, videos, films and radio broadcasts had documented performances by Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Woody Shaw, Red Rodney, Carmen McRae, Barry Harris, Philly Joe Jones, and Max Roach. After residencies at the Village Gate and Entermedia Theater, thirty-four years ago, Morganelli established Jazz Forum Arts, not-for-profit arts presenting organization, and in 1985 started the Riverside Park Arts Festival, which concluded on its 13th anniversary in August 1997.

Morganelli has produced over sixty compact discs, most for Candid Records, twenty of which were recorded “Live” at NYC’s Birdland club, where he was the music coordinator for five years. Nearly thirty years ago, Morganelli and his family moved to Westchester, and shortly thereafter, he inaugurated the Jazz at the Music Hall series in Tarrytown. Performers included Ahmad Jamal, Billy Taylor, Harry “Sweets” Edison, James Moody, Betty Carter, Gerry Mulligan, Herbie Mann, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Maynard Ferguson, Dave Brubeck, Chuck Mangione, Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, Savion Glover, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Dr. John, Spyro Gyra, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Pat Metheny, Hugh Masekela and the Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Illinois Jacquet, Duke Ellington and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestras–150 shows in 22 years.

Morganelli produced the Sunnyside and Berkshire Jazz Festivals and was executive producer of “Reckson Jazz at Tilles” at C.W.Post College in Greenvale, Long Island for nine years. Other productions have included the Tarrytown Arts Festival, concerts at the Paramount Center in Peekskill, the Palace Theatre in Stamford, CT, NJPAC, The John Harms Center in Englewood, NJ, the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College, SUNY, The Beacon Theatre, Symphony Space, NYU Skirball Center and The Town Hall, NYC. Morganelli also produced the Dizzy Gillespie 75th Birthday concert at Carnegie Hall and co-produced “Jazz Beats Breast Cancer” at Avery Fisher Hall. In 2005, he began presenting a new concert series at Jazz at Lincoln Center, supported by grants from the NEA & NYSCA for NPR broadcasts of the events.

As a trumpeter and flugelhornist, Morganelli performed at the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, the 1992 & 1994 Syracuse Jazz Festivals, the Du Maurier Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival, JVC/NY and Saratoga Jazz Festivals, the White Plains Jazz Fest, several tours of Italy (including in 2018), many concerts and festivals in Europe, Japan, Brazil and the Caribbean, and hosted nightly jam sessions aboard the QE2 to the Newport Jazz Festival from 1996-99. He continues to perform with his Jazz Forum All-Stars around the region and has just released his fifth CD as leader, Brasil!. He and his wife, Ellen Prior opened their new Jazz Forum club in Tarrytown, NY in June 2017.

“Craig Haynes’ drumming reminds me of the great drummers of the past…and like you’ve never heard before” —Lionel Hampton

Acclaimed drummer Craig Holiday Haynes brings his formidable trio to Zinc featuring guitarist Paul Bollenback and bassist Sergio Brandão.

Craig Holiday Haynes, (named after Billie Holiday)  is quite blessed to be able to do what he loves most and that is to “make good music”, travel, and meet great people. His travels have enabled him to learn different cultures and be appreciated by people all over the world, while as he says making it a “groovier place”.

He started out his professional career playing tenor saxophone, at the age of 14 in and around NYC, when he played with the Fabulous Uniques and recording an R&B hit and backing up people like Brooke Benton (A Rainy Night in Georgia) and The Toys (Lovers Concerto). Craig later studied African percussion with Chief Bey and went on to study more. On his 20th birthday, he switched up, and started playing the drum set seriously and toured with R&B/ Disco artist “Gary Toms Empire”.  He later performed and/or recorded with Sun Ra (turning down an offer to join James Brown because he now wanted to play jazz), He has since played an assortment of great jazz, blues, R&B, and most recently gospel with folks such as Barry Harris, Clifford Jordan, Freddie Hubbard, Gloria Lynne, Lionel Hampton, Tony Bennett, The Boys Choir of Harlem, The Allman Brothers Band, Leslie West, Geri Allen, Marcus Miller, Gladys Knight, Eddie Palmeri, actor Danny Glover (to name a few) and many, many others!

Craig has toured North America, Brazil, Cuba, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North, and West Africa and is the son of legendary drummer and three-time Grammy Award winner, Roy Haynes!

Showtimes are at 7:30 pm and 9:00 pm. Tickets: $25 advance / $30 day of show. For more info call (212) 477-9462 or visit https://zincjazz.com.

The 2015 Thelonious Monk Jazz competition – the most recent year to to feature vocalists – was easily the greatest year in the history of the event, producing three winners, all of whom have become leading lights on the contemporary jazz scene: Vuyo Satoshe, Veronica Swift, and the first-place winner, Jazzmeia Horn.  In 2017 Ms. Horn released her first album, A Social Call,  and now her second, Love and Liberation, is about to “drop.”  The first was a significant statement from a 26-year-old, but the second is a major leap forward: much of A Social Call, especially the title cut, seemed like a direct recreation of the late Betty Carter – obviously Ms. Horn’s number one role model  – and where that influence is still heard through Love and Liberation, Carter’s ghost here lingers more in the form of a spiritual and musical inspiration rather than a direct template.

In the new album, Ms. Horn’s original compositions are viable vehicles for her (just as Ms. Carter’s were for her own work). At Jazz Standard Wednesday evening, her treatments of standards were like multi-headed hydras: her opening number starts as the 1929 “Do Something” (by Bud Green and Sam Stept, also famously sung by Betty Carter) but soon bebops its way into “Willow Weep For Me” and a ballad that starts as “Tenderly” quickly detours through “Misty” and “The Nearness of You.”  Ms. Horn would seem to concentrate on the surfaces, both visual and musical, of everything she does, going from the outside in, and that’s hardly a criticism, since Ms. Horn is luminously bright, even radiant, and full of infectious youthful energy.

PS: Ms. Horn’s band at the Jazz Standard this week, with pianist Keith Brown, bassist Ben Williams, drummer Ralph Peterson, and special guests, tenor saxophonist Stacy Dillard and trumpeter Josh Evans, is also singularly excellent.

Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights in Jazz presents
“Remembering Erroll & Randy”
Tribeca Performing Arts Center
199 Chambers Street – (212) 220-1460
Thursday, June 20, 2018- 8 P.M.

shem.gif

The final concert in the 47th season of Jack Kleinsinger’s “Highlights in Jazz” is an admirably piano-centric one, spotlighting two legendary keyboardists who were, at least from the outside, a study in contrasts: Erroll Garner (1923-1977) died young and was so short that he was nicknamed “The Elf,” while Randy Weston (1926-2018) lived to be one of the most elder – and the most venerated – of all elder statesmen, and was so tall that he could have been mistaken for one of the walking trees found in African folklore.  But both Garner and Weston had enough in common, a shared love of swing, the blues, and the notion of keyboard jazz as a narrative vehicle – that they can indeed be celebrated in a single concert.  The Erroll Garner Project features bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Ulysses Owens and stars the remarkable young pianist Christian Sands, and the Randy Weston Alumni Band stars the late leader’s longtime costars Alex Blake, drummer Neil Clarke, and special guest, trombone star Steve Turre, all under the direction of Weston’s capable lieutenant, saxophonist T. K. Blue.

Qabbala::Entanglement is a twelve movement suite inspired by Michael Moss’ long study of Eastern mythology, physics, and Jungian analytical psychology. Moss artistically and musically presents an ancient metaphysical oracle in present-day form using improvisation over an extended compositional structure to realize his aims. Each of the 12 movements expresses a sephira or “limb” of the Tree of Life. For the Accidental Orchestra Moss has adapted Ain Soph, a 1973 composition recorded by Free Energy on 4th Stream Records (Cross Current, 1978). Ain Soph explores archetypal themes in the Kabbalah and represents the creation myth as a substrate of the Jewish mythical tradition.

Multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Moss, a veteran of New York’s free jazz scene, has assembled a brand-new band, the Accidental Orchestra, consisting of string, reed, brass and rhythm sections and emulating what he refers to as a small renaissance jazz orchestra. Conducted by Michael Moss, the Accidental Orchestra is comprised of a pool of the most exciting improvising artists on the New York scene.

Performing in the June 21 concert:  Jason Hwang, Rosi Hertlein, Carol Buck, Lenny Mims, Tanja Hoehne, Waldron Mahdi Ricks, Brian Groder, Libby Schwartz, Steve Swell, Peter Zummo, Richard Keene, Elliot Levin, Michael Lytle, Ras Moshe, Michael Moss, Dave Sewelson, Steve Cohn, Dom Minasi, Chien Chien Lu, Larry Roland, Warren Smith, Bob Meyer, Chuck Fertal.

The Accidental Orchestra will perform Qabbala::Entanglement in a series of three concerts at Westbeth Home to the Arts and then go into the recording studio. Westbeth has agreed to be a partner to the project and is celebrating its 50th Anniversary next year.  Michael Moss recorded and  released HELIX in 2018 on 4th Stream records, a cd featuring his two extended compositions and has received enthusiastic reviews from around the world:  https://m2-theory.com/helix-reviews.

QABALLAH::ENTANGLEMENT is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). LMCC empowers artists by providing them with networks, resources, and support, to create vibrant, sustainable communities in Manhattan and beyond.

There are plenty of reasons that the annual Highlights In Jazz concert series has been a favorite among in-the-know jazz fans for almost a half century. For starters, producer Jack Kleinsinger can be counted on to deliver concerts that are certain to surprise and delight savvy listeners. The final event of the 2019 season is no exception, as it showcases the compositional genius and enduring legacy of two of the most beloved figures in modern jazz, pianists Erroll Garner and Randy Weston.

A multi-generational lineup brings together established jazz masters with the best of today’s musical up-and-comers to fete these kings of the keyboard at the June 20 concert. On hand will be pianist Christian Sands, saxophonist TK Bluetrombonist Steve Turrebassists Alex Blake and Luques Curtispercussionist Neil Clarke, and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. And, as  has been the tradition since the very first Highlights in Jazz event, listeners will be treated to a surprise appearance by a renowned special guest.

The evening is dedicated to the memory of pianists Erroll Garner and Randy Weston. During his lifetime, Garner, who died in 1977, was among the world’s most celebrated jazz musicians, making regular TV appearances, and receiving numerous Grammy nominations. Not only did he write the beloved standard “Misty,” Garner also released an album that remains among the top-selling jazz recordings of all time: Concert by the Sea. The Garner mojo continues to this day. Pianist Geri Allen co-produced a three-CD release The Complete Concert by the Sea, which was nominated for a Best Historical Album Grammy.

NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston was a giant in more ways than one. A tireless champion of African Rhythms-based music, he traveled extensively throughout the continent on State Department tours and later ran a nightclub in Tunisia. He made a practice of seeking out the eldest member of the communities he visited, learning about the musical and cultural traditions and sharing them with audiences around the globe. A remarkable player, composer and raconteur, Weston maintained his curiosity and musical sense of adventure beyond his 92nd birthday, until his passing in September 2018. Renowned as a mentor, he was deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, while always looking joyfully to the future. Harvard University acquired Randy’s extensive personal archive in 2016.

The Erroll Garner Project includes:
As the creative ambassador to the Erroll Garner Jazz Project and co-producer of archival Garner recordings, pianist Christian Sands is immersed in the maestro’s music. Counting Geri Allen among his mentors, Sands has performed with Oscar Peterson, Dr. Billy Taylor, Wynton Marsalis, and Jason Moran, plus scores of others. He has released six albums as a leader and appears on dozens more by the likes of Gregory Porter, Bobby Sanabria, Christian McBride, Ben Williams and Reggie Quinerly, receiving multiple Grammy nominations along the way. Sands is also the musical director of the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour group.

Bassist Luques Curtis is in demand for his amazing skills in straight-ahead jazz as well as the Afro-Caribbean genre, as evidenced by his performances on more than 75 albums, and his numerous Grammy nominations. Luques’ experience includes stints with Eddie Palmieri, Christian Scott, Orrin Evans, Gary Burton, Andy Gonzalez and others. The bassist has also released four well-received Curtis Brothers recordings as co-leader with his sib, pianist Zaccai Curtis.

Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.has made the Rising Star list in DownBeat’s Critics Poll for five straight years, thanks to his work with everyone from Christian McBride, Kurt Elling, Joey Alexander and others. With four albums under his own name, and another four as co-leader of the New Century Jazz Quintet, commissions from Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Museum of Modern Art and others, expect to be wowed by this gifted musician, composer, producer and educator for years to come.

The Randy Weston Alumni Band consists of:
Saxophonist TK Blue was a mainstay–and musical director–of Randy Weston’s African Rhythms ensemble for more than three decades. TK has well over a dozen releases as a leader, and scores of others with Weston, Sam Rivers, Abdullah Ibrahim, Benny Powell, Jayne Cortez and more. A celebrated composer, arranger and educator, TK has appeared with a pantheon of jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen, Chico Hamilton, Arturo O’Farrill, James Moody, Billy Harper, Paquito D’Rivera, Regina Carter, Jimmy Scott, Mal Waldron and countless others.

Once you’ve heard bassist Alex Blake, you’ll never mistake his sound for anyone else’s. His unique style combines strumming, slapping and singing. Often identified with Randy Weston, thanks to his long tenure with African Rhythms, Alex has also appeared with Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Carlos Santana, Stan Getz, McCoy Tyner, Yusef Lateef, Betty Carter, Jimmy Buffett, and a genre-spanning roster of musical masters.

In-demand percussionist Neil Clarke forms deep musical relationships that last for decades, including significant long-term collaborations with Randy Weston, Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba, Dianne Reeves, Dave Sanborn, Paul Winter, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and others. A lifelong advocate of preserving and sharing African cultural traditions, Neil has worked as a consultant and educator, serving as artist in residence and conducting master classes at Harvard, Duke University, the Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and other renowned cultural institutions.

Award-winning trombonist Steve Turre made his mark with Ray Charles, Woody Shaw, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Art Blakey, J.J. Johnson, Lester Bowie, Max Roach, Horace Silver, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders, and other legendary band leaders, as well as fronting his own ensembles. A mainstay of the Saturday Night Live Band, Turre is also accomplished at making music on seashells. It will be especially exciting to hear Turre apply his magic touch to charts written by long-time Weston collaborator Melba Liston; a respected trombonist herself, notably with Dizzy Gillespie’s big band, Liston’s known for simpatico arrangements for brass, and the bass clef in particular.

Don’t miss the exciting wrap up to 2019’s Highlights In Jazz season, featuring a surprise special guest!

Bennett Paster debuts ten originals on Indivisible
which explore a variety of grooves
that are both accessible and inventive.

The pianist-organist leads a trio augmented by guitar, tenor and percussion on catchy songs that are filled
with creative solos and colorful ensembles.

In his career thus far, keyboardist, producer and arranger-composer Bennett Paster has performed with many of the who’s who of jazz in a variety of contexts. He says of his latest recording, “Deep groove is the number one priority on Indivisible. Each song explores a different flavor of groove, from 5/4 swing to funky 70s samba, from New Orleans to Nordic open 8th, and onwards to funk, country waltz, fusion, surf and beyond. This collection draws connections between the contrasting rhythms through the constant focus on groove.”

With a core trio that includes bassist Jeff Hanley and drummer Tony Mason plus several guests (guitarist Al Street, tenor-saxophonist Kenny Brooks, and percussionists Samuel Torres and Todd Isler), Paster is heard in top form as a pianist, organist and keyboardist, performing ten of his compositions.

Among the highlights, “Blues For Youse” has a funky soul jazz groove that may remind some in spots of Ramsey Lewis and early Herbie Hancock. “(Givin’ The People) What We Want” has an infectious half-time funk feel  while “Belgrade Booty Call” takes one to a funky New Orleans parade. The medium-tempo ballad “Gratitude,” an assertive “Gritty Greens” (shuffling a bit like “Work Song”), the sweet country backbeat of “The Murfreesboro Waltz,” and the fusionish “Salamander” (which is worthy of the Brecker Brothers) add to the variety of the consistently colorful program. The blend of the instruments along with a singular purpose by the players give a unity to the varied program while keeping listeners guessing as to what will happen next.

As a keyboardist, arranger-composer, bandleader, producer, recording and mixing engineer and the owner of his own studio, Bennett Paster has had a busy career, and one that has been steadily building in momentum and accomplishments.

Raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bennett Paster began performing professionally at the age of 14. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music with such notables as Dave Holland, Cecil McBee, Geri Allen, Paul Bley and Stanley Cowell. Since moving to New York in 1996, he has worked with such talents as Wallace Roney, Keb’ Mo,’ Robben Ford, Kurt Elling, Bill Stewart, Billy Hart, Peter Erskine, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Yosvany Terry, Curtis Stigers, and Ann Hampton Callaway among others.

Always fluent in a variety of different styles and musical idioms and equally talented on piano, organ, and electric keyboards, Paster (who co-led the Latin jazz ensemble Grupo Yanqui with bassist Gregory Ryan) has appeared on a countless number of sessions as a studio musician including with many singer/songwriters. As a leader he headed a trio on Skyline (2004) and Invisible Horizon (2006), was featured in the group Organic! on The Undoing (2001) and Sweets (2006), and led an all-star septet on Relentless Pursuit Of The Beautiful (2011). He also has extensive experience as a producer and recording engineer.

Bennett Paster sums up his newest recording this way: “Music moves us all, from finger snapping to full-on dancing. The power of groove to unite and bring joy is undeniable. It transcends cultures, nations, races and religion. This gravity is the force that I’m tapping into on the collection of songs that form Indivisible.”

Saxophonist Scott Robinson celebrates his 60th birthday
and the first all-tenor album of his wide-ranging career:
Tenormore, with Helen Sung, Martin Wind and Dennis Mackrel. Appearing June 21-22 at Birdland, and
June 23 at Rochester Jazz Festival
Some early press on Tenormore:

The range of expression that Robinson is capable of eliciting from a single horn… is astounding. Scott Robinson may take instrumental variegation to a level unsurpassed in this music, but that shouldn’t diminish his position as a tenor saxophonist of note. In that most crowded of fields, he still stands out. (4 ½ stars) -Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

Introducing Scott in a festival a few years ago, I mentioned that his tenor playing had reached a level where he was overshadowing better-known players who were winning polls. Since then, his name comes up more and more frequently in the tenor sax division… -Doug Ramsey of Rifftides (liner notes)

Impassioned playing from Robinson, always in control and yet stretching his sound and tone towards the edge of what’s possible. -Mark McKergow, LondonJazz News

Robinson kicks it all off in daring fashion… he swings effortlessly and delivers a singing quality… while also incorporating some unconventional twists… A winning set (4 stars) -Bill Milkowski, DownBeat

A horn that old has a patina. So does Robinson’s sound… Robinson may tailor each note in a line, varying its thickness, tone, vibrato or volume. He knows the tenor’s emotional range too, wounded cry to soothing consolation, even in a single phrase. A student of its overtones, he may slide into a split-tone passage reminiscent of Tibetan throat singing. Or he’ll leap into the altissimo register… to play a single grace note, or whole high-wire passages (4 ½ stars) -Kevin Whitehead, The Audio Beat

Sometimes there seem to be two flavors of contemporary jazz orchestras; some exist to fulful the needs of specific composers, like Maria Schneider, who are creating a new kind of jazz-based concert music, which may be beautiful – in fact it is beautiful – but you can’t dance to it.  Then there are those like the City Rhythm Orchestra (the city being Philadelphia) who are at once up to date but firmly rooted in the music’s long heritage of social dancing.  Led by saxophonists Pete Spina and Nick Vallerio, the group has a bright, vibrant and exciting sound, full of fascinating orchestral colors (particularly on their “City Rhythm Cha Cha,” which to me has something of a middle eastern sound atop a rhumba beat).  While the group usually plays a combination of new arrangements of standards and their own originals, this special Father’s Day show, featuring vocalist Steve Ritrovato, honors the remarkable collaboration of Frank Sinatra and Count Basie, which produced two studio albums and one of the great live concert albums of all time.  (Here’s hoping they play “I’m Standing Pat,” a newer song which is Sinatra-Basie-esque in the extreme.)

Freddie Jacobs is a composer, educator and jazz trumpeter who has seen the music business from many sides. He has toured with jazz legends Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Eddie Palmieri and Jimmy McGriff, and performed around New York with the Sam Jones/Tom Harrell Band, Nina Sheldon, Judi Silvano, and Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers.

His style “sounds as bright and assured as Freddie Hubbard or Woody Shaw, but with verve and a smooth, fluent originality,” said Robert Spencer in “All About Jazz.” Jacobs has written and produced two records, “Time Change” and “Jacobs’ Ladder.”

7:00pm Jonathan Heagle’s Proto-Cosmos

8:15pm Matt Panayides’ Field Theory
featuring special guest Rich Perry

shem.gif
Proto-Cosmos, led by guitarist/composer Jonathan Heagle, seeks new worlds in sound. Featuring the powerful finesse of Tiago Michelin on drums, the lyrical funk of Lavondo Thomas on bass, and the elegant flash of Julia Chen on keyboards, Proto-Cosmos travels freely from the celestial harmony of the Pleaides, to the down-and-dirty funk of rush hour in New York. “Jazz,” “Funk,” and “Free” musics meet and hit it off famously. It’s a trip!

Formed in spring of 2018 by Matt Panayides Field Theory has been performing new music throughout NYC in venues such as the 55 bar, Cornelia Street Cafe, Nublu and ShapeShifter Lab. With Matt Vashlishan on wind synth, Matt Panayides on guitar, Bob Sabin on bass and Mark Ferber on drums the band explores the sonic textures of space in time mapping it onto the present moment. The compositions and electrified guitar tone blends with the mind-bending virtuosity of the EWI and is propelled forward by this rhythmic powerhouse: the music is alive. They are especially happy to be joined by the great tenor saxophonist Rich Perry, who has been a large part of Panayides’ previous projects and recording.

It’s something of a surprise that one of the most spectacular voices in all of musical theater belongs not to a name-above-the-title, scenery-chewing, headline-grabbing uber-diva, but to this sublime, resolutely down-to-earth soprano from Chicago.  More than most of her colleagues, Liz Callaway has essentially made it on pure chops and the stunning beauty of her pipes, which is one reason why she’s thrived in such mediums as the soundtracks of animated cartoons (most extensively in the original Anastasia) and recordings, both being formats where the majority of Broadway headliners are rarely presented at their best.  Still, she’s hardly underground (she is, after all, a Tony nominee and an Emmy winner), Broadway insiders know well who she is, which is why her runs at Feinstein’s / 54 Below almost always sell out.  This latest show promises a Metro-centric “set in the city” including songs by Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, Bacharach & David, Billy Joel, and Irving Berlin. Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, Bacharach & David, Billy Joel, and Irving Berlin.

Showtimes are at 7:30 pm & 9:00 pm. Tickets: $20. For more info call (212) 477-9462
