In his career thus far, keyboardist, producer and arranger-composer Bennett Paster has performed with many of the who’s who of jazz in a variety of contexts. He says of his latest recording, “Deep groove is the number one priority on Indivisible. Each song explores a different flavor of groove, from 5/4 swing to funky 70s samba, from New Orleans to Nordic open 8th, and onwards to funk, country waltz, fusion, surf and beyond. This collection draws connections between the contrasting rhythms through the constant focus on groove.”
 
With a core trio that includes bassist Jeff Hanley and drummer Tony Mason plus several guests (guitarist Al Street, tenor-saxophonist Kenny Brooks, and percussionists Samuel Torres and Todd Isler), Paster is heard in top form as a pianist, organist and keyboardist, performing ten of his compositions.
 
Among the highlights, “Blues For Youse” has a funky soul jazz groove that may remind some in spots of Ramsey Lewis and early Herbie Hancock. “(Givin’ The People) What We Want” has an infectious half-time funk feel  while “Belgrade Booty Call” takes one to a funky New Orleans parade. The medium-tempo ballad “Gratitude,” an assertive “Gritty Greens” (shuffling a bit like “Work Song”), the sweet country backbeat of “The Murfreesboro Waltz,” and the fusionish “Salamander” (which is worthy of the Brecker Brothers) add to the variety of the consistently colorful program. The blend of the instruments along with a singular purpose by the players give a unity to the varied program while keeping listeners guessing as to what will happen next.
 
As a keyboardist, arranger-composer, bandleader, producer, recording and mixing engineer and the owner of his own studio, Bennett Paster has had a busy career, and one that has been steadily building in momentum and accomplishments.
 
Raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bennett Paster began performing professionally at the age of 14. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music with such notables as Dave Holland, Cecil McBee, Geri Allen, Paul Bley and Stanley Cowell. Since moving to New York in 1996, he has worked with such talents as Wallace Roney, Keb’ Mo,’ Robben Ford, Kurt Elling, Bill Stewart, Billy Hart, Peter Erskine, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Yosvany Terry, Curtis Stigers, and Ann Hampton Callaway among others.
 
Always fluent in a variety of different styles and musical idioms and equally talented on piano, organ, and electric keyboards, Paster (who co-led the Latin jazz ensemble Grupo Yanqui with bassist Gregory Ryan) has appeared on a countless number of sessions as a studio musician including with many singer/songwriters. As a leader he headed a trio on Skyline (2004) and Invisible Horizon (2006), was featured in the group Organic! on The Undoing (2001) and Sweets (2006), and led an all-star septet on Relentless Pursuit Of The Beautiful (2011). He also has extensive experience as a producer and recording engineer.

New York Jazz Stories were created by the artists themselves, recorded and transcribed, and then retold by Haney. 

JULIAN PRIESTER
Born in Chicago on June 29 1935, Julian Priester spent his teenage years performing in Chicago’s vibrant RnB scene with artists such as Muddy Waters, Dinah Washington and Bo Diddley. In the mid-50s he joined Sun Ra’s groundbreaking avant-garde big band. In 1958 Julian split for New York where he joined Max Roach while Roach was involved in recordings such as Freedom Now Suite, an album that combines jazz improvisation with concert hall composition.

In 1960 Priester made his first recordings as a band leader and then joined the Blue Note label as an in-demand session trombonist. While with Blue Note he recorded with Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers, John Coltrane and others. In the early 70s Julian joined Herbie Hancock’s legendary Sextet which combined spacey avant jazz with electronics and psychedic studio production. Splitting from Hancock in 73, Priester continued this style of progressive jazz fusion with two recordings of his own on the ECM label.

In the 80s and 90s Priester worked with Sun Ra’s band again, as well as Dave Holland, Charlie Haden and others. In the late 90s he began to record under his own name again, and continues to do so to this day.
 
 ANDREW CYRILLE  – 2019 Recipient of the Vision Fest Lifetime Achievement Honors
(n.Brooklyn, NY) studied at Julliard and. Hartnett schools of music emerging to professional gigs. with such noted legends as Mary Lou Williams, and. Coleman Hawkins.
He joined the Cecil Taylor unit in 1964, and stayed for about 10 years, eventually performing drum duos with Milford Graves. In addition to recording as a bandleader, he has recorded and/or performed with musicians such as David Murray, Irène Schweizer, Marilyn Crispell, Carla Bley, Butch Morris and Reggie Workman among others. Cyrille is currently a member of the group, Trio 3, with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman.

DAVID HANEY
Haney studied composition for six years with Czech composer, Tomas Svoboda and presented works with the Society of Oregon Composers, Haney has worked with such featured artists as Andrew Cyrille, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Bud Shank, Bernard Purdie, Buell Neidlinger, Julian Priester, Han Bennink, Obo Addy, Wilbert de Joode, Gerry Hemingway, Wolter Weirbos, Perry Robinson, and Johannes Bauer. Haney has recorded 14 albums for C.I.M.P. Records and Cadence Jazz Records . David has also collaborated on 14 albums on other labels worldwide. He has received grants and commissions for his creative work from the U.S. State Department; Alberta Film Works; and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Haney was awarded a travel grant from the U.S. State Department to present the music of composer Herbie Nichols in concerts throughout Argentina and Chile. Haney’s piano/trombone work Ota Benga of the Batwa was included in the critics pick for best Jazz Album of 2007 (Coda Magazine). “Conspiracy a go go” and “Clandestine” were both selected Top Ten Jazz Albums of 2009 (Cadence Magazine). David’s current release “Solo” received top ten honors in 2014 (Cadence Magazine). The Penguin Guide to Jazz has a half page entry on several David Haney albums.

Qabbala::Entanglement is a twelve movement suite inspired by Michael Moss’ long study of Eastern mythology, physics, and Jungian analytical psychology. Moss artistically and musically presents an ancient metaphysical oracle in present-day form using improvisation over an extended compositional structure to realize his aims. Each of the 12 movements expresses a sephira or “limb” of the Tree of Life. For the Accidental Orchestra Moss has adapted Ain Soph, a 1973 composition recorded by Free Energy on 4th Stream Records (Cross Current, 1978). Ain Soph explores archetypal themes in the Kabbalah and represents the creation myth as a substrate of the Jewish mythical tradition.

Multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Moss, a veteran of New York’s free jazz scene, has assembled a brand-new band, the Accidental Orchestra, consisting of string, reed, brass and rhythm sections and emulating what he refers to as a small renaissance jazz orchestra. Conducted by Michael Moss, the Accidental Orchestra is comprised of a pool of the most exciting improvising artists on the New York scene.

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”

In 1991, Beauty and the Beast was the second film in the Disney animated musical renaissance, and then only three years later it became the first Disney property to become a Broadway musical. Of all the incarnations of said property, the Broadway version is the strongest musically, mainly because composer Howard Menken keenly appreciated the differences between the various mediums, and, accordingly wrote a dozen or so extra songs specifically for the stage version, all of which are as good as the four classic numbers in the animated original. If the 2017 live action adaptation is a disappointment, it’s because they missed a great bit in ignoring all those wonderful Broadway songs just crying out to be included. (In fact, when I watch either of the movie versions, they both seem strangely incomplete – the Beast doesn’t even get so much as a single solo number. Make your blood boil, well I should say!) As everyone knows, the piece itself is a familiar fairy tale set in a magic castle with enchanted silverware (which somehow seems very French) and is often classified with the long line of Disney “Princess” stories, but enlivened, in all of its incarnations, with a considerable amount of Broadway pizazz, vaudeville shtick, and color and spectacle galore. Yet underneath, it’s a very moving tale of transformation, redemption, and salvation, a tale in which both love and humanity itself are not qualities to be taken for granted, but which must be earned and bestowed upon the worthy.
