Dennis Lichtman Hottet
with Tamar Korn
The Iridium
1650 Broadway
Tuesday March 12
shem.gif

Calling all jazz fans who like to go to bed at a reasonable hour. Clarinetist (not to mention bandleader and occasional violinist) Dennis Lichtman is the factotum behind the remarkable late night jam sessions that have been transpiring at Mona’s, way down on the Lower East Side, for over a decade now. While those wee-small-hours sessions are a must catch event (at least once in the lifetime of every jazz lover), this primetime gig at the Iridium is a must for those who prefer to stay in midtown and make it home in time for Stephen Colbert. Mr. Lichtman is a distinctive and expressive player, on all of his instruments, and always puts together first-rate bands; his taste in musicians and tunes is superb, ditto for vocalists. Tamar Korn most often aligns herself with the nascent Hot Jazz movement, but as a singer she blurs boundaries and confuses all categories; let’s just say she’s one of the most compelling voices singing today, with a sound like no one else’s – at least, not in the human race.

Vocalist Vanessa Rubin was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, to parents from Trinidad and Louisiana, and grew up in a musical household. She achieved her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Ohio State University. She received a standing ovation for her performance of “God Bless the Child” while competing in the Miss Black Central Ohio Contest, which convinced her that her true calling was to sing in the jazz tradition. This Billie Holiday masterpiece has since become her “official” theme song.

Rubin returned to Cleveland, where she began singing in many of the city’s clubs and hotels and performing with the best of the city’s musicians. She also formed and managed her first group, consisting of organ, guitar, vibes and drums. Soon after she moved to New York City in 1982, she performed at Sweet Basil and the Village Vanguard with the Pharoah Sanders Quartet. She then began to study with pianist Barry Harris at his Jazz Cultural Theatre.[1]

Since that time she has worked with Kenny Barron, Lionel Hampton, the Mercer Ellington Orchestra, Cecil Bridgewater, Etta Jones, Toots Thielemans, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, and Grover Washington, Jr. More recently she has completed international tours with Herbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.

What The Critics Are Saying About “A Good Thing”

“A 12-song collection of terrific, but not overdone tunes. Bhaneja has a nice feel for lyrics, and an approach that is at times reminiscent of Chet Baker, but somewhat more assertive. Whitley provides wonderful support, and makes the most of his solo opportunities. The program is replete with good tunes that are mostly familiar, but not ones that are the kind of same old, same old selections that too many vocalists settle for. “
–  Jersey Jazz, Joe Lang

“Blue Standard’s selection and delivery of 12 standard and timeless vocal classics is nothing short of sophisticated, polished and highly entertaining. The emotionally-rich voice of Raoul Bhaneja combined with the masterful piano licks of Jesse Whitely come across as tender yet effervescent and more than do justice to these tunes that will be familiar to most jazz vocal aficionados. A stylish and accomplished collaboration that is solid and finely-calibrated.”
The Jazz Music Blog

“Between the expressive and authentic emotions coming through Raoul on songs like “When Did You Leave Heaven,” here on this song, and throughout, Jesse is right there on piano beside him, alongside him, behind him, and even sometimes ahead of him…This album is a great saunter down the sidewalk, a fleeting kiss, a memory in the city lights aglow, rhythm alight with love and excitement for the music, itself.”
– Spokane Public Radio, Zan Agzigian

“BLUE STANDARD/A Good Thing: Top shelf jazz/cabaret male vocal that takes a nice walk down memory lane adding all it’s own special sauce rather than try to recreate what was. Powered by a pair of pros that wanted to shake it up a touch, vocal fans will get a nice kick out of these proceedings as it’s helmed by no mere manques singing Sinatra into their hair brushes in the mirror. Check it out.”  – Midwest Record

“This is the new project for Raoul Bhaneja, entertainer, vocalist, actor, harmonica player & bandleader. He’s joined by Jesse Whiteley of the famous Whiteley clan and a keyboard wiz formerly with bands like JW-Jones and the 24th Street Wailers. The duo’s name derives from ‘jazz standard’ and they chose songs from well-known jazz singers such as Nat King Cole, Chet Baker and Jimmy Scott. The album title comes from a Joe Williams song, which gets a lovely vocal from Raoul… You’ ll also marvel at the voice/piano reduction – as has been written in another context, these songs are not so much covered as ‘uncovered’. Jaymz Bee writes in his liner notes that ‘open minded jazz aficionados should be impressed’. I would add that open minded blues lovers would enjoy this as well. Categories and labels are handy to organize information but when it comes to musicians it often does them a great disservice, ignoring the fact that many of them have far wider interests and abilities. You should check out this album wherever you get your music.”

After a two-month hiatus, guitarist-turned-composer/arranger Peter Leitch brings his 14-piece New Life Orchestra back to Club 75 at Bogardus Mansion in New York City’s TriBeCa neighborhood. Peter’s five nights of successful performances November-January were especially gratifying because they were the first time these arrangements and compositions had been performed by this hand-picked group in public.

As Peter Leitch’s fans already know, this orchestra is named “New Life” in homage to the artist’s near-miraculous recovery from stage 4 lung cancer. Emerging from his treatments unable to use his left arm but full of musical ideas, Peter turned to writing and orchestrating, and now feels freed from the tyranny of the guitar-of daily practice-able to realize his musical ideas in a larger context. Of course, the guitar is featured prominently in his writing-one of the unusual features of this very untraditional big band!

The Peter Leitch New Life Orchestra

Bill Mobley & Duane Eubanks, trumpets
Tim Harrison, flute
Dave Pietro, alto/soprano saxophone
Jed Levy, tenor saxophone, flute, alto flute
Carl Maraghi, baritone saxophone, bass clarinet
Matt Haviland, trombone
Brandon Moodie, bass trombone
Phil Robson, guitar
Peter Zak, piano
Sam Bevan, bass
Joe Strasser, drums

ScoBar Entertainment Presents Dennis Lichtman’s Hottet with vocalist Tamar Korn at Iridium, Tuesday, March 12th

Clarinetist/bandleader Dennis Lichtman and the inimitable vocalist Tamar Korn present an evening of hot 1920’s and ’30’s jazz celebrating New York City and its rich musical heritage at The Iridium, Tuesday, March 12th at 8:30pm, with Jessie Gelber on piano and Tal Ronen on bass. Lichtman and Korn are central figures in the current revival of early jazz that has taken New York by storm for the past decade.

Dennis Lichtman is a multi-instrumentalist (mainly clarinet, fiddle and mandolin) who is deeply entrenched in early- to mid-1900’s American music, from traditional jazz and swing to bluegrass and western swing. Originally from Boston, MA and currently living in New York City, Lichtman has performed at Carnegie Hall, major festivals throughout the United States and on stages in Europe, Brazil and China. He is on the faculty of the Welbourne Traditional Jazz Music Camp in Middleburg, VA and has led college master classes and public school workshops through the Midori Foundation, Lincoln Center’s “Meet he Artist Series” and Beijing’s Ping-Pong Productions.

Tamar Korn has been a New York-based vocalist for the last decade, playing a repertoire steeped in traditional New Orleans and early jazz, western swing and American roots music. Her formative years were with one of the pioneers of New York hot jazz revival, The Cangelosi Cards. She now leads her own band, A Kornucopia. Tamar is a founding member of both The Brain Cloud and The Grand St. Stompers and she often appears with Baby Soda jazz band, Terry Waldo and on occasion, joins the violinist Mark O’Connor as well as Irish folklorist and tenor banjo and bouzouki player Mick Moloney. Her love is of singing songs both lyrically as well as playing her voice “instrumentally,” Tamar has toured throughout North America, as well as Scandinavia, France, Lithuania, China and the Caribbean. She has also appeared at venues all over New York ranging from establishments such as Cafe Carlyle and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to retro-nouveau speakeasyish affairs such as Shanghai Mermaid, as well as NYC Winter Jazzfest.

The Iridium is located at 1650 Broadway, New York, NY 10019 Phone: (212) 582-2121

DELTA AIR LINES PRESENTS
BOSSABRASIL Starring
SINGER/COMPOSER/ GUITARIST
JOAO BOSCO “LEGEND OF BRAZIL”
@ BIRDLAND APRIL 16 – 20

Produced by Pat Philips-Stratta

shem.gif
JOAO BOSCO and his very talented band of Guto Wirtti on Bass, Kiko Freitas on Drums, and Ricardo Silveira  on Guitar, arrive from Rio and bring  the exciting rhythms of Samba and Bossa Nova to the  Birdland  stage with influences of Rock and Roll, Jazz, and other ethnic cultures such as, Arabic and African.  The basic ingredient of  his music is Samba, Brazil’s cultural own.  While singing in Portuguese, Bosco makes you feel that the sound of his words are as important as their meaning.

The New York Times said of BOSCO …”On acoustic guitar, he was masterly picking out the subtle syncopation of ‘Samba’ rhythms..a musician complete within himself..a ferocious performer with a kind of trans-state of precision and energy!”

He grew up in a musical family, his mother a concert Pianist and his brother a Composer.  Bosco concentrated on American Jazz, influenced by Miles Davis, Charlie Parker,  Duke Ellington and the great Brasilian musicians Dorival Caymmi and Antonio Carlos Jobim.  He worked with Vinicius de Morais and later Aldir Blanc who wrote his lyrics.  Joao Bosco  made many recordings, especially with the amazing vocalist Elis Regina, one of the greatest Brasilian vocalists of all time.

Bosco is revered for writing the protest song “O Bebaido e a Equilibrista” which became the theme song for Amnesty International.  He has made many recordings and has collaborated with greats  Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, and  Dorival Caymmi  among so many others such as American guitarist Lee Ritinour.     Bosco tours  the world and carries on  the legacy of this important music of his country with his extraordinary  talent.

JOAO BOSCO says, “Music is everything to me.  I am alive because I am singing and playing .” ..

CORNELIUS “SONNY” FORTUNE
Saxophonist
May 19, 1939 – Oct. 25, 2018
shem.gif
“One For Sonny” is the working title of our concert, with the “Sonny” in question being the late saxophonist Cornelius “Sonny Fortune. Sonny died unexpectedly late last year and I, for one, feel his absence deeply. He was my closest musical associate from the time I joined his then new band about 45 years ago. I don’t believe anyone would say that we played alike. Rather, our individual styles seemed to compliment each other. More importantly, we seemed to think about music in similar ways, both in long talks off the bandstand as well as in musical conversation on the bandstand.

Often times, we’d sit in his car after a late night gig and talk until well after sunup. Over and over again in those rap sessions we’d endeavor to solve the world’s problems regarding politics, race, the business of jazz, you name it. Sonny’s passing brings an end to our marathon chats. What remains, however, is the style of music that we shared. And, on the evening of March 22nd, we’ll be playing that music, with Sonny’s fiery spirit and unrelenting passion in our mind and in our hearts. We hope you’ll decide to share the evening with us.

Each year for almost a half century, the annual Highlights In Jazz series has produced shows guaranteed to surprise and delight savvy jazz fans. The second concert of the 2019 lineup continues that tradition with Satchmo and Sidney Revisited, an homage to trumpeter Louis Armstrong and clarinetist/soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet.

To celebrate the music of two of the most influential, inspirational, and beloved forebears in jazz, producer Jack Kleinsinger brings together David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band; Bechet’s leading disciple, Olivier Franc; stride-piano master Jean-Baptiste Franc; and Sidney Bechet’s son, percussionist/drummer Daniel Bechet, along with a host of other jazz greats, including a surprise special guest.

The New Orleans-born trumpeter, composer and singer Louis Armstrong was among the most recognizable entertainers of the 20th century. Armstrong, aka Pops or Satchmo, was mentored by hometown cornet hero King Oliver. Raised in an orphanage, he went on to perform for presidents and royalty, traveling the world on State Department tours, and attaining mainstream success with hits spanning “Stardust” to “Hello, Dolly.”

Clarinetist, saxophonist and composer Sidney Bechet was another child of New Orleans with roots reaching directly to the source of jazz. In the words of Duke Ellington, “Of all the musicians, Bechet was to me the very epitome of jazz. He represented and executed everything that had to do with the beauty of it all, and everything he played in his entire life was original.” A skilled improviser, by his mid-teens Bechet had established a strong reputation through his work with popular regional bands, and went on to greater recognition playing with King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Noble Sissle and Ellington. He achieved global acclaim, and was especially beloved in France.

The March 28 lineup of musicians for the Highlights In Jazz presentation Satchmo and Sidney Revisited includes David Ostwald’s Louis Armstrong Eternity Band, featuring:

Tuba player David Ostwald hadn’t yet reached his teens when he bought his first jazz LP, which featured the iconic jazz pioneer trumpeter Louis Armstrong. It was an appropriate start for a boy who grew up to found and lead the Louis Armstrong Eternity Band. A vital presence on the NYC jazz scene for almost four decades, Ostwald counts Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, and Jelly Roll Morton among his early inspirations. Wynton Marsalis, Dick Hyman, Nicholas Payton, Clark Terry, Benny Waters, Woody Allen, Jon Hendricks, and Leon Redbone are just a few of the legendary artists with whom Ostwald has performed. He’s also taken part in jazz education programs for children at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and at the Louis Armstrong House in Corona, Queens, where he also serves on the board.

Trumpeter Alphonso Horne hasn’t wasted any time in making a positive impression on jazz listeners. The Juilliard grad is a regular at prominent venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, and has played with Marcus Roberts, Ted Nash, Michael Dease, Catherine Russell, Joey Alexander and other current jazz luminaries. A Grammy nominee, Horne was also a Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Trumpet Competition semifinalist.

Multi-instrumentalist Adrian Cunningham has proved his expertise and creativity on saxophone, flute, clarinet and vocals. Since moving to the Big Apple about a decade ago, the Australia-born Cunningham has appeared and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Jon Batiste, Vince Giordano, Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, Ted Rosenthal, Chris Potter and René Marie.

Trombonist Dion Tucker has played for a pope (Benedict) and a president (Barack), appeared on Broadway and at Kennedy Center, on TV (The Oprah Winfrey Show, Harry, and others), and with musical royalty including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, and Clark Terry. A composer and educator as well as an in-demand sideman, Tucker demonstrated his versatility through stints with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Charles Tolliver Big Band, David Berger and The Sultans of Swing, and many more.

Banjoist, Guitarist, Vocalist and Songwriter Arnt Arntzen fell into playing jazz when his grandfather Lloyd bought him a banjo. Learning from his older brother Evan Arntzen, as well as his mother, father and grandfather, he has since begun leading his own band, A Pluckin’ Good Time, and various trios and quartets playing everything from Jazz to pop and rock covers in a jazzed up fashion. After obtaining his degree in music performance from Vancouver Community College, Arnt is now co-leading the Arntzen Rhythm Review, the Brothers Arntzen, and Three Generations of Jazz. Arnt has also produced his own album of original material, called Banjo Hymn.

Philadelphia-born drummer David F. Gibson has performed with the Count Basie Orchestra, Joe Williams, Clark Terry, the Sun Ra Arkestra, the Odean Pope Saxophone Choir, the Diane Schuur Trio, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Woody Herman Orchestra and others.

The concert’s Bechet contingent includes:

Soprano saxophonist and composer Olivier Franc aka Bechet’s leading disciple, who plays Bechet’s saxophone as well as music from this classic repertoire along with originals. A favorite at festivals and international venues, Olivier has performed with Wynton Marsalis and other greats.

Stride-piano master Jean-Baptiste Franc is a second-generation Bechet expert who frequently performs with his father, Olivier. In addition to the great saxophonist and clarinetist, the pianist’s influences include James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. Jean-Baptiste has also released several well-reviewed albums as a leader.

Percussionist/drummer Daniel Bechet is the son of the early jazz icon Sidney Bechet. A master of his father’s repertoire, as well as funk, fusion and straight-ahead jazz, Daniel is also the author of Sidney Bechet: My Father.
This concert is produced in association with the Sidney Bechet Society.

With the Highlights In Jazz series nudging the half-century mark, Kleinsinger is justly proud of his ongoing legacy as a producer. Since the very first Highlights in Jazz event, “Every concert in the series has been integrated, has included a variety of younger artists and veterans, and has featured a renowned surprise guest. And every year we honor a living jazz great—let’s honor them while they can smell the roses,” he declares. This year’s honoree, Randy Brecker, will be feted at the May 16th concert.

The HIJ series is a favorite destination for New York jazz fans and in-the-know out-of-towners. Besides the lineup of jazz icons onstage, there are often stars to be found in the audience as well—sports greats Venus Williams and Willie Randolph, actors Bette Midler and Alan Alda, and author Kurt Vonnegut, to name just a few.

The secret to the longevity of the beloved Highlights In Jazz series? “We’re doing the concerts other producers don’t do,” Kleinsinger says, “and in the process we’ve outlasted everyone who’s ever done jazz concerts in the history of New York.”

You won’t want to miss a single event in this new season of Highlights In Jazz!

Bereft of CGI or special effects, you will believe that two men can fly. At the height of the movie musical, in the age of such great dancers as Bojangles Robinson, Fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly, there was one dance team that literally flew above all the others: Fayard (1914-2006) and Harold (1921-2000) Nicholas. They were the flashiest, the liveliest, the most exciting and even astonishing pair of dancers to ever strut their stuff on a Broadway stage or Hollywood screen. Where other dancers merely suspended disbelief, the Nicholas Brothers repealed the law of gravity, with leaps and splits, that left other hoofers staring gape-jawed. Bruce Goldstein, who knew both brothers well, has spent decades assembling all the complex pieces of their remarkable story, and this once-in-a-lifetime presentation features not only classic clips from their famous films but ultra-rare behind-the-scenes footage, often shot by members of the Nicholas Family, and unseen interviews with colleagues such as Gregory Hines, Maurice Hines, Leonard Reed, Cab Calloway, Max Roach, and Bobby Short, not to mention Harold and Fayard themselves. You don’t want to miss this evening, I know that I’ll be there. (Look for the bald guy.)

About Bobby Lavell

Born in Memphis, Tennessee Bobby LaVell gained an interest in music while in high school. He became proficient on the Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet and Piano while pursuing formal musical studies at Memphis State (now the University of Memphis), and Shelby State College. Bobby also studied and became proficient as an arranger and composer during that time. Bobby’ s formal education continued with composition studies with Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Albam at the B.M.I. Jazz Composers Workshop.

Bobby studied improvisation with Fred Ford of Memphis, Tennessee, and he credits Ford with shaping his musical philosophy. . . “He was the best teacher anyone could have, because he taught me to teach myself. However, his first and foremost influence was his father, the late Bob (Honeymoon) Garner, a pianist and organist in the Memphis area.

During Bobby’s early professional career, he performed, arranged and conducted for Memphis singer Lee Stone.

He continued to develop his performing career by serving long stints as a regular with the phenomenal BB King and Ray Charles. Bobby has also performed with such fixtures as The Temptations, The Four Tops, and The Nicholas Brothers. Additionally, there have been performances with Harold Mabern and George Coleman. Mr. Coleman once said of LaVell, “He’ s an excellent musician and an exceptional saxophonist”.

In Ohio and New York Bobby performed as leader of The Bobby LaVell Octet and Quartet. He spent ten years with the late Cab Calloway. And performed with the late Pete (Laroca) Sims Swing Time All Stars,

He is regular member of The Jimmy Heath Big Band. For a while he performed with The Chico O’Farrill Big Band. He performed with Slide Hampton’s Jazz Masters for three years until the band was shut down. Bobby still maintains a close working relationship with Mr. Hampton. He is also a member of The Manhattan Symphony Jazz Orchestra conducted by Dennis Mackrel. He was a member of The Duke Ellington Orchestra for almost 20 years. With his own intuition Bobby founded and leads “The Bobby LaVell Jazz Orchestra”, formally “The Hudson River Jazz Orchestra”.

He worked with a Big Band conducted by Benny GoIson. And for the last four years he has been a member of Ron Carter’s Great Big Band.

Bobby is continuously busy throughout each year, performing venues all over the United States, Canada, South America, Europe and the Caribbean.

Bobby’ s talents are to say the least, a man who is full of inspiration and enormous talent, as a saxophonist, Bobby LaVell’s sound, technique and articulation are second to none. As a composer his works are poignant and inspiring.  As a person, he is solid, and as an artist he is phenomenal.

“Duduka Da Fonseca had the flowing beat doing his bidding, making one dance while sitting down. A master of “Brasilient” rhythms, he is equally capable of grooving a jazz 4/4 with his great, loosey-goosey swing.”
Ira Gitler, American jazz historian and journalist

“Duduka Da Fonseca is one of the very few drummers, or perhaps the only drummer, who has found his own unique voice by combining the two traditions. His command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.
With music in mind,
Sincerely,”
Billy Hart

“The Brazilian percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca,a key member of Trio Da Paz, may be the most impressive jazz-besotted Brazilian percussionist since Airto Moreira.  He balances tropical rhythms and swing with uncommon ease.”
THE NEW YORKER

“[Alves has] subtlety, musicianship and extraordinary improvisational facility…” “…outstanding capabilities as a melodic improviser…”
Robert L. Doerschuk, DownBeat Magazine

“Alves plays with a gravity and a stylistic flair that’s truly impressive.”
Phillip Van Vleck, Billboard Magazine

“Alves executes his feats with unhurried grace, even at very fast tempos. There is an aptitude that, if not exclusive of Brazil, has reached its highest expression there: the communication of a subtle energy embodying a life- affirming message that life is transitory.”
Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times Magazine

“Adnet’s voice is an emotionally powerful instrument capable of firmness or fragility, depending on the situation. When the tempo slows down and the lights are low, she reveals an attractive vocal wave—more a quiver than out-and-out vibrato—that heightens the intensity in her delivery; this level of directness and honesty transcends mere language when it appears.”
Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“Maucha and I have travelled the world with the Banda Nova since 1984. She is a marvelous singer. Her voice is deep, rich, mysterious. It makes me long for the Brazilian forest. Maucha is intelligent and comes from a very musical family. She is a good girl, wonderful woman, a great artist”
Kiss from your fan,
Antonio Carlos Jobim

Steve Blum, guitar,

Swing into spring as they open
The Spring Jazz Series 2019 Jazz at the Poli Club

On Friday March 29th, the brilliant guitarist Steve Blum and his Molecular Organ Trio will open the Jazz at the Poli Spring Series at the Palace Theater Poli Club (100 E. Main St, Waterbury, CT). A pioneering fusion guitarist, a lifelong admirer of Wes Montgomery, and a very versatile player who has been a major asset on a countless number of sessions since the early 1970s, Blum heads a group that also features organist Akiko and drummer McClenty Hunter.

“– His taste and chops are impeccable, -Clifford Allen, The Austinist

“He is right on, emphasizing his astute understanding of the evolution of jazz music and his own personal vision…Stephen Blum is a remarkable musician.” – Joe Ross, Roots Music Report, CD Insight

“Steve Blum’s playing is jaw dropping!!  – Saulmon Addison, Time Out NY

The program in the Poli Spring Series will include special Wes Montgomery arrangements, a special nod to the veteran guitarist (and Waterbury resident) Joe Diorio, classic gems, and many musical surprises. The guitarist will draw upon a lifetime of rewarding musical experiences while stretching himself, always swinging, and coming up with consistently creative solos in his own voice.

Steve Blum was born to play the guitar. He discovered and fell in love with jazz at an early age after hearing the work of Herb Ellis and Bill Harris. At age fifteen, after he heard Wes Montgomery both on record and live, he was so moved by his playing that he decided to pursue jazz full time. He studied with guitarist Lawrence Lucie while attending the New York School of Jazz- one of New Yorks first jazz education programs for talented high school students started by Mercer Ellington.  As a teenager he had rare opportunities to play at several of New York’s finest jazz clubs; The Village Vanguard, and Birdland. At age 18, while attending The University of Miami, he was called to play for Ms. Peggy Lee -this turned into a five-year association with Ms. Lee, playing guitar on the road as well as concerts, such as her famous Central Park Concert in NYC. `Blum recorded a pioneering fusion album with Tom Hensley’s Electric Jazz Band & Synthetic Symphonette, worked with such notables as Louie Bellson, Joe Williams, Morgana King, Ira Sullivan, Cecil McBee, Jack McDuff and Dr. Lonnie Smith, and uplifted a countless number of record sessions. He has played everything from straight ahead jazz to reggae, blues, and Latin and has appeared at most of New York’s top jazz venues. Some of the guitarist’s most rewarding playing on records can be heard on his album Gottschalk’s Last Dance and Ms. Peggy Lee’s Two Shows Nightly Live at the Copa.

Steve Blum has led the Molecular Organ Trio for several years. Akiko, who is from Osaka, Japan, has been playing the organ since she was three and has been part of the New York jazz scene since 2001, most recently leading the album So Cute, So Bad. Akiko has played with legendary drummer Grady Tate, saxophonist, Lou Donaldson and Jeff Hamilton.  McClenty Hunter has worked with such greats as Kenny Garrett, Lou Donaldson, Eric Reed, and Dave Stryker, recently heading an album whose name could describe the drummer: The Groove Hunter.

Steve Blum, a living legend who now lives in Connecticut, sounds at his best with the Molecular Organ Trio, displaying energy, dexterity, his vast harmonic knowledge, swing, creativity, and honesty on the guitar. It promises to be a night to remember at the Palace Theater Poli Jazz Club.

For more information about the Steve Blum concert (show times are 7 & 9 p.m.), contact the box office (203-346-2000) or visit www.palacetheaterct.org. More information on the guitarist can be found at http://artistecard.com/stephenblum.

Lyrics & Lyricists:
“Yes I Can! – The Sammy Davis Jr. Songbook”
92nd Street Y (92Y)
1395 Lexington Avenue, (212) 415-5500
Saturday through Monday (February 23-25)

Just in time to dovetail with the new American Masters documentary, Sammy Davis, Jr.: I Gotta Be Me (check your local PBS listing), comes what promises to be a superlative celebration of one of the all-time most iconic American entertainers, the diminutive dynamo, that “sun-tanned superman,” Sammy Davis, Jr., the world’s most remarkable dancer, singer, comedian, actor, Ratpacker, impressionist, civil rights crusader, Nixon-hugger, and persistent autobiographer.  Written and curated by Laurence Maslon, who served the same role in the PBS show, this new L&L lineup costars the exuberant dancer Jared Grimes along with a versatile cast of singer-actors in Harriett D. Foy, Max Kumangai, Betsy Wolfe, and the highly-redoubtable, always-welcome Matthew Saldivar. If it’s anything like the late Sammy himself, this show should be fast paced and highly exciting, but also full of emotion and extremely moving.

Described by Jazz Times as “a talent to be heard, admired and anticipated”, Chiara Izzi has developed a unique sonic interpretation of a fusion of different genres, including jazz, pop and Mediterranean sounds. Following her international debut performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition in 2011, at which Quincy Jones awarded her first prize, the vocalist recorded her debut album Motifs (Dot Time Records). “Sister you are very, very talented. You should go to the U.S., Jones encouraged Izzi at this early point in her career. Izzi moved to New York and has since performed at The Blue Note NY, The Iridium, Apollo Theater, Aspen Jazz Festival, Jazzahead, Smalls, as well as the Italian Embassy in Washington DC. She has graced the stage with some of the finest musicians, including Leon Parker, Aaron Goldberg, Bruce Barth, Eliot Zigmund, Warren Wolf, Anthony Wonsey, among many others. The Italian singer has received remarkable appraisals from Quincy Jones, Bobby Watson, Benny Golson, Kevin Hays, Eliot Zigmund, Joel Frahm, Aaron Goldberg, David Kikosky, Greg Hutchinson, Jonathan Kreisberg and Dado Moroni.

Having released 15 recordings as a leader, Kevin Hays has received critical acclaim from publications such as The New York Times, Downbeat Magazine and Jazz Times, as well as a “Coup de Coeur” from the Académie Charles Cros (France). A prolific sideman appearing on over 60 records, Kevin’s long list of notable musical associations include records with Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton, and Al Foster. The New Day Trio is Kevin’s latest project with bassist Rob Jost (Bjork, Tony Scherr) and drummer Greg Joseph (Steve Kuhn, Art Garfunkel). Developing over a 2 year residency at New York’s 55 Bar alongside tours across the US and Europe, the trio emphasizes lyricism with a musical scope bridging Hays’ love of jazz, classical, blues, soul, folk and rock music.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IN TOUCH ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCED TODAY ITS SPRING JAZZ SERIES LINEUP

Top artists will perform throughout the spring months

2db03b9e-435c-4ece-af0e-55575d968f2c.jpg

NEW YORK, NY – February 23, 2019 – In Touch Entertainment is announcing the spring lineup of its highly successful jazz series produced by New York-based concert promoter, Charles Carlini of In Touch Entertainment.

The programs consist of Piano Jazz, Guitar Masters, Trumpet Masters, Percussion Masters, Boss Tenors, and Vocal Mania. The latter is also running concurrently on the West Coast, with performances held at Vitello’s Jazz and Supper Club in Studio City, CA.

In addition to instrument- and voice-centric programs started last year, In Touch also continues its popular Latin jazz series curated by bestselling author and Latin jazz enthusiast T.J. English.

All these performances will continue to be a regular feature at Zinc throughout the spring months.

“These programs have met with such enthusiastic response from our audiences because each one features world-class musicians,” said In Touch’s CEO, Charles Carlini.

“Given the rich repertoire of our spring series, we are confident they will continue to be very successful,” he added.

Some of the artists featured in these series include:

  • Piano Jazz: Lynne Arriale will perform on March 22 and Ethan Iverson on May 3-4.
  • Trumpet Masters: Alex Sipiagin on March 27, Eddie Henderson on April 26 and Josh Evans on May 30.
  • Guitar Masters: Freddy Bryant on April 15 and Mark Elf on May 6.
  • Boss Tenors: Gary Thomas on April 12, Craig Handy on May 17 and Lew Tabackin on May 31.
  • Percussion Masters: Ralph Peterson Jr. on March 30 and Cyro Baptista on April 13.
  • Dangerous Rhythms: Cesar Orozco on March 14.
  • Voice Mania NYC: Raul Midón on March 13 and Nellie McKay on April 24.
  • Voice Mania West Coast: Paulette McWilliams, April 26.

The choice of Zinc Bar, an iconic club located at 82 W 3rd St in Greenwich Village, was not coincidental. “I’ve had a long association with the Zinc jazz club since its inception in the early 90s. I felt it would be a great venue to launch and test many of these ideas that I’ve been incubating for some time. Plus, its present location was once a place called Club Cinderella, where Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk used to perform and attracted such celebrities as Mae West and Frank Sinatra.”

Other performances are listed here https://intouchent.com/events.

Vitello’s is at 4349 Tujunga Avenue in Studio City.

Baritone saxophonist and flutist Carol Sudhalter
releases Live At Saint Peter’s Church, a set filled with superior compositions, inventive playing and swinging music.

Her quartet performs fresh renditions of songs by Jobim, Sonny Rollins,
Benny Golson,  Tadd Dameron, Bill Evans, Hank Mobley, Don Redman
and two originals.

“A by-product of the current redressing of discrimination against women in government, the military, education, the professions, the arts, and elsewhere has been the realization throughout the jazz world that there are within its ranks countless and too-long-ignored female instrumentalist who are every bit as talented as their male counterparts. Saxophonist, flutist, big band and combo leader, producer, and educator Carol Sudhalterhas since the early 1970s been a leader, a pioneer really, in advancing the cause of women in jazz with her efforts to bring them to front and center in the performance arena. That she is uniquely equipped as a model in terms of her extraordinary artistry is made abundantly clear by her new CD Carol Sudhalter at St. Peter’s (Alfa Music), an especially welcome release as a display of her world-class distinction on baritone saxophone and flute.

—W. Royal Stokes, author of Growing Up With Jazz: Twenty-Four Musicians Talk About Their Lives and CareersSwing Era New York: The Jazz Photographs of Charles Peterson, and other books on jazz plus the trilogy Backwards Over

In her career, Carol Sudhalter has proven herself to be one of jazz’s top baritone saxophonists, a fine flutist and an original tenor soloist, leading over ten albums of her own. Live At Saint Peter’s Church features her at the head of a tight and complementary quartet that includes pianist Patrick Poladian, bassist Kevin Hailey and drummer Mike Campenni.

The music is straight ahead modern jazz with a few surprising twists. One of Tadd Dameron’s finest songs, “On A Misty Night,” serves as an excellent introduction to the quartet with Ms. Sudhalter displaying her deep tone on baritone and each of the musicians having an opportunity to be featured. The lesser-known Benny Golson piece “Park Avenue Petite” is a haunting ballad that is well deserving of a revival; Sudhalter and bassist Hailey take melodic solos that build on the atmosphere. The leader switches to flute for Bill Evans’ moody “Time Remembered” and swings hard on Hank Mobley’s “Funk In Deep Freeze” with the latter also including an excellent solo by pianist Poladian and a fine drum chorus from Campenni.

“Colin Blues” has a special surprise, Carol Sudhalter’s debut vocal on record. Her singing is quite effective during her medium-tempo ballad, paying tribute to one of her students. Sonny Rollins’ charming jazz waltz “Valse Hot” follows and has particularly appealing solos from each of the musicians. Patrick Poladian contributes the lively swinger “Fun In The Alley,” bassist Hailey is showcased on “Gee Baby Ain’t I Good To You” and the colorful program closes with a brief melody statement on Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Luiza.”

Growing up in a musical family that had a father who played alto sax in the New England area and two musical brothers (including trumpeter and author Richard Sudhalter), Carol Sudhalter started on the flute while in college. She studied with Ran Blake and Phil Wilson at the New England Conservatory Of Music, took up the baritone sax, and in 1978 moved to New York. She played with the first all-female Latin band (Latin Fever), founded the Astoria Big Band (which has now been active for 33 years) and has worked with such notables as Etta Jones, Chico Freeman, Jimmy McGriff, Sarah McLawler, Henry Butler, Jimmy Cobb and Jason Marsalis in addition to leading her own groups.

Carol Sudhalter has performed in nearly every significant New York jazz club, at quite a few festivals, and regularly tours Italy, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. She has led over ten albums of her own, primarily for the AlfaMusic and Carolina labels.

Live At Saint Peter’s Church features Carol Sudhalter in top form with her quartet, and it is a significant addition to her musical legacy.
