An accomplished musician, Monk has charted his own course as a composer, arranger and melodic drummer. In 1986, he established the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. His work with the Institute inspired the drummer to return to jazz. He played in Clifford Jordan’s big band and with Walter Davis before creating his own sextet, which has had stable personnel since the late ’80s. The T.S. Monk Sextet will feature Willie Williams, tenor, Patience Higgins, alto, Chris Berger, bass, Theo Hill, piano, April May Webb, vocals and Randall Haywood, trumpet at Jazz Forum Aug. 3 & 4 at 7 & 9:30pm.

FROM HAITI WITH LOVE
Pop Soul-Folk Artist HERVÉ live at Joe’s Pub

NEW YORK, AUGUST 1, 2018 — “My work is a celebration of the spirit of the Haitian people, and a reflection of our strength in the face of incredible odds” said pop soul-folkartistHERVÉ.

Rooted in the land of his birth, Hervé connects his listeners to his past while also integrating the influences of the United States, France and India, all places he now calls home. His music is vibrant, engaging and ultimately uplifting, allowing the audience to transcend their differences and feel the heartbeat of humanity.

Hervé’s voice is warm, deep and ethereal and his lyrics akin to poetry. He blends musical genres — the French Chanson, 90’s Alternative American Rock and 60’s Motown and Soul — to create his unique style. He has connected and made lasting impressions on audiences in the U.S., the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations, and throughout Europe, most notably in France, where he has performed at the legendary L’Olympia, La Villette, LaCigale and Le Trianon in Paris.

Haiti’s pop soul-folk singer-songwriter will be spreading his infectious energy of love and tolerance once againat Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater in New York City on Wednesday, August 29th at 7 p.m. Under the theme “Rasanblé”which means “to gather together” in the Créole language.  Hervéwill be performing songs he has written mostly in English, and also in French and Creole.  Exploring the story of Haiti through songs that are at once distant but yet familiar and unifying. It is definitely an annual performance at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater that is not to be missed.

Hervé: Rasanblé live at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, 425 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10009 on Wednesday, August 29. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., show at 7:00 p.m. Tickets: $30; 212-967-7555 or visit:https://joespub.publictheater.org/reserve/index.aspx?performanceNumber=37794

The LESZEK “HEFI” WISNIOWSKI Quartet is the Polish group playing modern jazz music which is the result of an original concept by the leader Leszek Hefi Wisniowski as well as freedom and continuously changing alchemy between team members during their concerts and recordings. The music brings together elements of jazz and contemporary music. Wisniowski often uses the flute’s extended techniques in virtuoso manner, moreover he uses the glissando headjoint® – an innovative mouthpiece that allows him to explore new forms of musical expression. Wisniowski started a collaboration with outstanding American jazz flutist Jamie Baum in 2016. Very quickly both artists noticed that they had a similar improvisation approach and flute comprehension in jazz which has inspired them to continue this joint project. They first worked together in Poland and now, for the first time in NYC!

“Uncompromising, very personal, excellently arranged standard themes and not least, interesting explosive improvisations. It thrills you, as first-class thrillers do, since the very first sounds…Perfect intonation, articulation and phrasing.”

-Jazz ForumMagazine

“Leszek Wiśniowski is, I think, the most interesting (and still developing) flutist in Polish jazz. His “Kinetyka” is an astonishing musical concept which we will be returning to for years.” – www.slojazz.net

Pianist and composer David Haney and legendary drummer Bernard Purdie will bring another performance of New York Stories to Joe’s Pub.

New York Jazz Stories combines swinging, electrifying music, featuring Bernard Purdie and company along with some highly entertaining stories retold by David Haney. These are real stories told directly to Haney, transcribed and brought to life with a sound track by “Pretty” Purdie, bassist Adam Lane, and others.

Featured Stories including live audio and video archives
Annie Ross and Sarah Vaughan
Roswell Rudd recalls Herbie Nichols
Lorraine Gordon on Max Gordon, Monk and Blue Note Records
Sonny Rollins on the Bridge
Bernard Purdie and the Purdie Shuffle

“Haney and Purdie fit together like interlocking parts of a jigsaw puzzle. The drums gives a center to the piano’s drifting improvisations and the piano creates fantastic shapes about the drum foundation. These two makes a really strong and fascinating team.” Cadence Magazine

BERNARD PURDIE the world’s most recorded drummer, was born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the eleventh of fifteen children. Purdie moved to New York in 1960 and soon after recorded his first hit, with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970, which marked the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has worked with a vast array of artists, such as Paul Butterfield, Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums.

DAVID HANEY studied composition with Czech American composer Tomas Svoboda and piano with jazz pianist Eddie Wied. As music editor for Cadence Magazine, David interviewed over 60 jazz artists for the Jazz Stories project. The following artists have worked and recorded with David: Roswell Rudd, Julian Priester, John Tchicai, Steve Swell, Roy Campbell, Bud Shank, Wolter Weirbos, Han Bennink, Andrew Cyrille, Bernard Purdie, Marvin Bugulu Smith, Gerry Hemingway, Dylan Van de Schiff, Buell Neidlinger, Dominic Duval, Adam Lane, Michael Bisio, Paul Blaney, Perry Robinson, Johannes Bauer. As a leader, Haney has over 20 albums on CIMP-USA, Cadence-USA, SLAM-UK, NoSe-So-Argentina, La Gorda-Argentina, Canada Jazz Studio-Canada.

As always, there will be the 5 fresh-made sangrias, local food options, and tarot card readings. This year there is also LIVE JAZZ with Patricia Dalton and the Jazz Colleagues.

The Jazz Colleagues will be playing throughout the day. The six musicians who’ll be sharing the stage – including vocalist Patricia Dalton – are internationally recognized performers who will have festival goers grooving to their great jazz music. Their instruments include keyboard, bass, sax, clarinet, and trumpet. Their sound is amazing.

The food this year will be from The Taste Box and Yummy Kitchen, both from Chatham, NY. Chef Chris Morales of The Taste Box puts together some of the best Mexican food in the upper Hudson Valley, and Yummy Kitchen’s Asian fusion dishes get rave reviews wherever they’re serving. Grandma Apple’s mini cheesecakes will be here, too.

And there’s the sangria, of course! We make 5 different sangrias with our wines and fresh fruit, including our signature strawberry-lemonade sangria made with the Ghent Blush – a crowd favorite.

Admission to the festival is free! Costs are depending on what you want: $15 to try the sangrias; $8/glass of sangria; wine-tasting fee in the tasting room; and other prices are by individual vendors. The winery is also selling its book, Seasonal Sangria: 100 Recipes to Enjoy All Year Long. Festival hours are 11 am to 6 pm. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. Absolutely no outside food or beverages are permitted

The winery is located at 1900 State Route 66 in Ghent, NY. For more information, visit the website at www.hudsonchathamwinery.com, or call 518-392-WINE.

The Hudson-Chatham Winery is Columbia County’s first winery and one of the county’s first craft beverage venues. It was voted Columbia County’s andthe Capital Region’s Best Local Winery in 2018. The winery is also a founding member of the Hudson Berkshire Beverage Trail and a member of the Capital Craft Beverage Trail.

All compositions and lyrics: SPNoonan (ASCAP)

Rhythmic storyteller Sean Noonan composes and conducts original multi-stylistic music with a pair of drumsticks. His “wandering folk” theory captures the elusiveness of ever-evolving world music traditions and reorients them through his own distinctive lens, fusing his discoveries from harmolodic jazz-rock to avant-garde classical music. The far-ranging sounds of Noonan’s wide-spectrum music combines the loquacity of an Irish bard, the narrative rhythms of Samuel Beckett, and the raw physicality of a street-smart boxer. The treasures that he finds along the way are filtered through his distinctive vision to become the unpredictable.

Noonan has produced an explosion of more than 20 unclassifiable releases, featuring Malcolm Mooney, the original singer of the German rock band Can; composer/violinist/violist Mat Maneri, composer/guitarist Marc Ribot, bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and the Malian griot Abdoulaye Diabaté, featured on Noonan’s Afro-Celtic album Boxing Dreams.

Bassist Peter Bitenc and Alex Marcelo—jazz legend Yusef Lateef’s pianist of choice—who were featured on the 2016 release Memorable Sticks, once again join Noonan on his new release The Aqua Diva, which is rooted in a wide spectrum of American musical, cultural, and lyrical themes. Noonan recasts a tune named for the iconic TV personality “Don Knotts”with experimentalist composer Conlon Nancarrow, in a 12-tone additive rhythm composition. “Where Would I Go” is a folk song adaptation of “Wayfaring Stranger,” and “Elijah Rocks” is a traditional spiritual.

Noonan, an Irish-American drummer with a theatrical bent, scripts tracks 1, 4, 8, and 10 like the plot of a soap opera series. T.A.D. (The Aqua Diva) is stalked by Butterflies, who is jealous of Bubbles for having an affair with T.A.D. The saga ends with Butterflies murdering them in a swingers club’s swimming pool. Noonan’s original story has a direct correlation with his Zappanation Rock Opera, which was inspired by Frank Zappa and Edgard Varèse; it recently premiered in Germany. Read about it here: https://seannoonanmusic.com/zappanation-rock-opera; read The Aqua Diva lyrics here: https://seannoonanmusic.com/the-aqua-diva-album-lyrics.

“Independence might be the ruling concept of this drummer/leader’s career. It defines a common relationship not only among his hands, feet, and voice, but between his art and almost everything else in drumland.”
 —Modern Drummer Magazine

“The drummer and composer Sean Noonan approaches postmodern jazz and world music from the same angle of self-discovery. … He manages to make his pieces speak coherently, and in a unified voice.” —The New York Times

Reviews for Noonan’s 2017 record, Man No Longer Me:

“…prime time Sean Noonan. The sound of an artist in his imperial phase. Intense, daft, tricksy, virtuoso, addictive: an absolute trip from a ‘modern-day sonic griot.’ ” —The Quietus

“As if the early Pink Floyd had a free jazz session with The Mars Volta in Africa.” — Intro Magazine

Dear New York Friends,
I am thrilled to let you know that after three and a half years absence from New York I’ll be singing at Birdland on Sunday, August 26th at 6 PM.  The show is celebration of the 30th anniversary of my first record in 1988, a reunion with Mike Renzi and Jay Leonhart, and a tribute to Grady Tate, who passed away last year.  Vito Lesczak will be playing drums.  Lots of great songs — and great musicians.  I hope you’ll come hear us.  Birdland requests that you order tickets through them.  Looking forward to seeing you all and making up for lost time.  Come celebrate with us!
xxxooo

Glenn Crytzer is a New York City based bandleader, arranger, composer, guitarist, and vocalist who is in love with the music of the Jazz Age and Swing Era.

While completing his formal training in classical composition and cello at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Florida State University, Glenn took up dancing the Lindy Hop as a hobby. Through the Lindy his love of early jazz grew, but he lamented that there were so few musical groups that specialized authentic performance of his favorite kind of music. Glenn decided to put his musical training to use, taught himself guitar, banjo, and jazz arranging, and set about bringing to life the music he loved.

Now in his mid 30s, Glenn has become a staple in New York City’s jazz scene as a guitarist and bandleader. He has released 8 albums with his big band and combos and dozens of his recordings have been featured in films and TV shows seeking to evoke the sound of the golden age of radio. In 2017 his big band was named Best Group in New York in the NYC Jazz Awards.

Jazz Woman to the rescue, at Bickford Theatre

By Bill Nutt

Morris County Tourism Bureau hosted The Seeing Eye Walking Tour Morristown Daily Record

Periodically, musician and activist Antoinette Montague will throw on a cape and assume the persona of costumed super-hero: Jazz Woman.

“I was doing a concert with an all-woman band,” recalled Montague.  “I grabbed a cape and started calling myself that.”  She has used the sobriquet in the title of her 2015 album, “Jazz Woman to the Rescue.”

Newark-born Montague is a woman on a mission – several, actually.  She does not shy away from political and social causes, and she embraces the role of activist.  “I don’t see myself as having to take a stand,” she said.  “It just comes out.”

At the same time, she embraces the diverse spectrum of music that includes swing, jazz, and R&B.  “When I perform, I’m always fraught,” Montague said.  “What am I going to give the audience that is great and that is authentic?”

All those facets will be on display when the Antoinette Montague Experience, as she calls her ensemble, performs at the Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum on Thursday, July 26.

The concert is part of the theater’s Summer JazzFest.  As is the case with all shows in the series, food trucks will be selling wares two hours before the performance.

Montague said that her Bickford concert will draw from the sounds of traditional New Orleans.  “We’ll do some second-line and party music, with some blues,” she said.   Besides singing, she will also play kazoo on numbers from the 1920s and 1930s.”

DANGEROUS RHYTHMS: Q&A with David Virelles

Chucho Valdes, the legendary, 76-year-old Cuban pianist whose late father, Bebo, was one of the architects of Latin Jazz, has referred to the young musician David Virelles as a “genius.” For the 35-year-old Virelles, with a long career still ahead of him, this is a formidable compliment to live up to. Still, few jazz aficionados would argue with Chucho’s assessment. Since arriving in NYC in 2009, through a handful of records and live performance, Virelles has established himself as the new face of Latin Jazz in the 21st Century. His music is challenging, virtuosic and boldly original. The highly sought-after performer chooses his gigs sparingly, so the Dangerous Rhythms Latin Jazz Explosion is thrilled to be able to showcase this remarkably talented composer and pianist. T.J. English, curator, and host of the series, recently caught up with Virelles to ask some questions about, among other things, his upcoming show at Zinc.

This is the fourth album of original music from The Richard Shulman Group and I’m honored to be working with such skilled and intuitive musicians. Turned into Lemonade is melodic, harmonically inventive jazz influenced by Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Paul Winter, Oregon, Bill Evans, and Jay Beckenstein. This collection of compositions/performances is a blend of melody, fire, water, groove, mutual exploration and beauty which I hope will uplift you the listener as much as creating it has uplifted me.” —Richard Shulman

“Richard Shulman is a gifted pianist/composer with a distinctive goal: creating music that’s joyful to the ear and uplifting to the spirit. Bothsophisticated and accessible, his work has the harmonic sense of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans and is designed to inspire and soothe, even when it swings.” —All Music Guide Biography by Dr. Judith Schlesinger.

Hugh Wyatt of the New York Daily News calls Shulman “most enticing.. a new find… in the Keith Jarrett tradition who cleverly and interestingly weaves a number of different cultures into his music.”

“The playing throughout is consistently superb. The music is worth repeated listening and offers different dividends each time. Richard Shulman is a major composer and performer who deserves and will attain wider recognition.”

Frank Salamone, in reviewing Shulman’s recording “A Simple Gift.”

No murder of crows, no parliament of owls, no flamboyance of flamingos.
Just a whole bunch of bird songs: because they’re great tunes, and also an homage to my heroine, Carmen McRae, and her album “Birds of A Feather.”

Phil Robson’s music, on a first hearing, always gives me that feeling I haven’t yet heard right the way through it to the other side. What critics say of Jed Levy – from the All About Jazz review of “Evans Explorations”Jed Levy has set for himself in his explorations of a piece of the Evans digest using his tenor trio is a daunting one.

Saxophonist Jed Levy has been a mainstay on the New York jazz scene for over 20 years. In addition to performing and recording as a leader, he has had long standing working relationships with such jazz luminaries as Jaki Byard (a musical mentor, 3 recordings and countless performances), Don Patterson, Jack McDuff (valuable road experience), Ron McClure (2 CDs and ongoing performances), and Headhunters drummer Mike Clark (2 CD’s and new projects in the works.)

shem.gif
You And The Night And The Music is the debut of Lucia Jackson, a promising young jazz singer who displays a fetching voice on a set of standards along with a few surprises.

With her father, jazz guitar great Ron Jackson, contributing arrangements and leading an impressive rhythm section joined by guests, Lucia Jackson creates fresh variations of timeless material.

Lucia Jackson has had busy careers as both a dancer and a model. However her love of singing, her obvious talents as a vocalist, the encouragement of her father, and very favorable receptions at many venues in the New York area have led her to release her debut recording. Her many fans raised $15,000 through Indiegogo for the project. With the vocal coaching of the world renowned bassist-vocalist Nicki Parrott and an inspired repertoire, Lucia is heard at her very best throughout the program.

For the memorable effort, Lucia Jackson is joined by her father Ron Jackson on guitars, pianist Yago Vazquez, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Corey Rawls, with guest appearances by Daniel Garcia on flamenco guitar, violinist Frederika Krier, Javier Sanchez on bandoneon and percussionist Samuel Torres playing cajon and congas.

The music on You And The Night And The Music features new twists on classics from the Great American Songbook, many of which are arranged in tango, bossa-nova or bolero styles by Ron Jackson, who is also the set’s producer. The song choices, which include not only vintage tunes that have special meanings for the singer such as “Beautiful Love,” “Sophisticated Lady” and “Never Let Me Go,” but Julia Michael’s recent “Issues,” the Beatles’ “And I Love Him,” and Ms. Jackson’s original “Feel The Love,” give the set both variety and consistent high quality. While the supporting cast is strong and Ron Jackson’s solos are colorful and tasteful, the main focus is on the young singer, who comes through in winning fashion.

Some of the highlights on You And The Night And The Music include:

“Just One Of Those Things”:  – The 1930s standard is taken uptempo, includes some superior and straightforward jazz singing, and has a hot guitar-drums tradeoff.

“And I Love Him”; – The Beatles classic is transformed into a vocal-guitar duet and sung with great tenderness.

“I’m A Fool To Want You”: – Lucia Jackson’s interpretation is full of quiet longing, accentuated by Frederika Krier’s passionate violin.

“Feel The Love”: – An original by the singer and Daniel Garcia, this piece gives her an opportunity to sing over a funky rhythm that, with Garcia’s acoustic guitar, also has the feel of flamenco.

“No Regrets” and “When You’re Smiling”: – The pair of joyful swingers are each given exhilarating treatments with Ms. Jackson also scatting quite effectively on the latter.

You And The Night And The Music is a significant recording debut for it introduces Lucia Jackson as a subtle and lightly swinging jazz singer, one with a very attractive and often-fetching voice who displays a quiet intensity and a real feeling for the lyrics that she interprets.

Lucia Jackson, who was born in New York, grew up in Madrid, Spain where she started singing when she was ten. She studied voice and piano at the prestigious Escuela de Musica Creativa when she was 13 and also ballet and flamenco at the Professional Dance Conservatory. Returning to New York when she was 18, she has since danced with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre as a guest student, at the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival and, as a member of FJK Dance, toured China for two months. As a jazz singer, she has performed with many groups including the Bud Maltin Orchestra, Marty Schwartz, and the Art Lillard Big Band.

At age 26, Lucia Jackson is set to make a major splash in the jazz and music worlds with the release of You And The Night And The Music from the Roni Music label.  Her large fan base, which through the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign made the recording possible, will be pleased.

As a jazz singer, she has performed with many groups including the Bud Maltin Orchestra, Marty Schwartz, and the Art Lillard Big Band.

An accomplished musician, Monk has charted his own course as a composer, arranger and melodic drummer. In 1986, he established the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. His work with the institute inspired the drummer to return to jazz. Roni Ben-Hur/Harvie S Trio
CD Release Event!
Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers, students and listeners alike. While living in Israel, he began playing in wedding bands and in Tel Aviv clubs as a teenager enraptured by the recordings of Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell. The young musician also came to love the classical Spanish repertoire via Segovia, hearing a Moorish sound that resonated with his family’s North African roots. Later, after moving to New York in 1985, he would fall for Brazilian music, particularly through the work of guitarist-composer Baden Powell. When Roni came onto the New York jazz scene, he was fortunate to be taken under the wing of veteran jazz pianist Barry Harris, a Monk disciple and Grammy Award-winner who led the influential Jazz Cultural Theater during the mid-’80s in Manhattan. The up-and-coming guitarist played in Harris’s band, absorbing musical wisdom and life lessons. Roni regularly performs in the top jazz venues and in major festivals across the country and around the world.

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO OUR WORLD?
by Anne Phillips
Will the songbirds fly?
Will the butterflies light upon the flow’rs in the fields of tomorrow?
Will the beasts of the jungles live only in books?
Oh, what are we doing to our world?
What are we doing to our world?

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO OUR WORLD? is a musical performance that takes us on a journey beginning with the Creation, through the myth of Genesis, on to Civilization, and continuing beyond to… what we are doing to our world.

It is performed by a child and a diverse group of singers, dancers and actors woven together through various genres of exciting music that touches everyone: Opera, Gospel, Latin, Jazz, and Choral. Intertwined throughout are historic gems of wisdom by writers and historians such as Hildegard of Bingen, Mark Twain, John Muir, Chief Seattle and Madeliene L’Engle.
