Considered one of the greatest bassists in the world and a force in the evolution and popularity of Brazilian jazz, the Grammy-nominated Matta makes his Maverick debut the last Saturday of the season in a show that just may have you dancing in the woods. When Yo-Yo Ma sought band members to fill his new Brazilian project, Nilson was the obvious choice on bass. He recorded on “Obrigado Brazil”, “Live in Concert at Carnegie Hall” and “Yo-Yo Ma & Friends”. All of these were Grammy winners. So it’s no wonder our phones are ringing off the hook about this one!

Whether blowing bebop over a Mingus tune or freely improvising with Anthony Braxton, Michael Rabinowitz’s contributions have changed the conception of what the bassoon can do. Since graduating with a BFA in music performance from SUNY at Purchase in the late seventies Michael’s improvisatory skills opened the door for the bassoon to enter a variety of musical environments not traditionally associated with the instrument.
|
“Listening to a bassoon sing jazz is a distinctive pleasure. After hearing Bennie Maupin and Yusef Lateef tackle this instrument, I have a certain appreciation and expectation of the bassoon’s power and persuasion. Michael Rabinowitz appreciates and exploits the acoustic characteristics of the bassoon and this makes his “Uncharted Waters” CD a joy to my ears.”

NEWBURGH (July 9, 2018) —– Jazz at Atlas (JAA) will present life-long Hudson Valley resident and celebrated trumpeter, cornetist and composer Ted Daniel and his ensemble, the International Brass & Membrane Corps (IBMC), at Atlas Studios, 11 Spring St. in Newburgh on Saturday, July 21 at 8 PM. General admission is $20 at the door. No advance tickets will be available.
The group brings a contemporary reading to the early New Orleans jazz of Joseph “King” Oliver and features leader Daniel on cornet, Marvin Sewell on guitar, Joseph Daley on tuba and Newman Taylor Baker on drums. The concert will celebrate the release of IBMC’s new CD, Zulu’s Ball — Ted Daniel Plays the Music of King Oliver, on Altura Records.
Daniel has lived most of his life in Ossining. A leading figure in the NYC loft jazz scene in the 1970s, he has recorded and performed with such major artists as Sam Rivers, Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Andrew Cyrille, Billy Bang, Henry Threadgill, and Defunkt while also leading groups of his own. His IBMC is a powerful quartet with equally long histories in jazz and demonstrates how even the oldest forms of this music can be approached with both respect and freshness.
Daniel began his professional career playing trumpet with his childhood friend, legendary guitarist Sonny Sharrock. Daniel attended Berklee School of Music and Southern Illinois University before a tour of duty with U.S. Army Bands. He later attended Central State College, Ohio, where he studied with Dr. Makanda Ken McIntyre. He earned a bachelor of music degree in theory and composition from the City College of New York. He played on Sharrock’s first album, Black Woman. His second recording was with a band he co-led (Brute Force) with his brother, Richard Daniel, produced by Herbie Mann. Since then, Ted Daniel has participated in more than 30 published recordings.
Daniel has led workshops at Amherst College, Bennington College, Williams College and the University of Hosei in Japan, as well as summer music workshops for high-school students. He has also conducted a seminar in Madrid. He has produced three albums under his own name: The Ted Daniel Sextet on Ujamaa Records, Tapestry on Sun Records, and In The Beginning on Altura.
Daniel won an NEA compositional grant and also a “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” award from DownbeatMagazine. On May 20, 2008, Porter Records reissued Tapestry, with a bonus track from the original performance of 1974 recorded at Ornette Coleman’s Artist House. Daniel also formed a duo with Michael Marcus on B-flat clarinet and Daniel on trumpet and assorted brass. Their first release, Duology, on Boxholder Records, received excellent reviews. Duology’s second CD, Golden Atoms, was released in June 2008. In May 2009, Ujamaa Records released the Ted Daniel Trio CD The Loft Years, Volume One.
JAA is a collaboration of musician, writer and multimedia artist James Keepnews and music researcher, radio host and producer Ben Young. Along with presenting performances by world-renowned creative musicians, JAA also offers listening sessions, dialogues with artists and classes covering the entire spectrum of creative music.

The Hudson Valley Jazz Festival 2018
Is Ready To Launch

|
 |
Aug 9-12 will be the 9th season for The Hudson Valley Jazz Festival. Initiated in Warwick, this yearly 4 day series quickly transitioned into the greater Hudson Valley and Westchester.
Covered by The NY Times, DownBeat, JazzTimes and other local media it has earned it’s place amongst the valley’s summer offerings.
Dave Liebman, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Wallace Roney, Arturo O’farrill and John Abercrombie has all performed but the mission of this festival is to highlight the region’s deep resource of local jazz talent and the supporting venues.
From local restaurants to the founder’s home base in Warwick, you can enjoy a concert series on the Green, a park in Pine Island, in cafes, a conference center chapel in Warwick, spots in Goshen to breweries in Florida and Walden, libraries in Washingtonville and Warwick and then some……
The focus are shows taking place in varied environments presenting everything from big band to gypsy jazz, fusion, bop, cool jazz and an array of vocalists.
Each season the festival brings in new artists who haven’t appeared in the past while the public also gets to hear some of their returning favorites. What distinguished this festival from many other music festivals is that the goal is to raise the profile of the participating musicians from the valley and help to define the community as a destination for live jazz.
Each season the festival brings artists in who haven’t appeared while the public gets to hear some of their returning favorites. To date since it’s inception, The Hudson Valley Jazz Festival has presented 131 performances from Kingston to Montgomery, Greenwood Lake, Peekskill, Pine Island, Croton on Hudson, Warwick to Chester and SugarLoaf.
As of this writing 17 shows are scheduled, Thurs – Sun. Aug 9 -12 with the full schedule, artist and venue information at www.hudsonvalleyjazzfest.org

at The Loft at City Winery
Wed. July 25th at 7:30pm

 |
The Loft, the intimate new venue upstairs from NYC’s City Winery, will host a performance by the new trio version of Gary Lucas’s
THE EDGE OF HEAVEN LIVE 30’s Chinese pop project on Wed. July 25th at 7:30pm. The trio features renowned guitar wizard Gary Lucas (Jeff Buckley, Captain Beefheart) and 2017 Global Music Award Winner Feifei Yang on vocals and erhu (the two-stringed Chinese violin), with multi-instrumentalist Jason Candler (Gods and Monsters) on reeds and percussion. They’ll be performing repertoire inspired by Gary’s celebrated album salute to 30’s Chinese Pop The Edge of Heaven, mingled with new Mandarin versions of classics by Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, and others. The music will be accompanied by stunning projections of scenes from Old Shanghai during the Art Deco era by lighting designer Kristopher Anton. I’m hoping you’ll consider advancing this show with a feature or advance blurb.
The Edge of Heaven: Gary Lucas Plays Mid-Century Chinese Pop originally appeared in 2001 on the French Label Bleu, and sold significantly in the U.S. as an import. The recording acted as a tribute to two of the great Shanghai divas, Zhou Xuan and Bai Guang, who were counted among “the Seven Great Singing Stars” of the Golden Age of Shanghai Pop circa the 1930’s and 40’s. The unique music they sang is known in Mandarin as “shidaiqu”, which translates as “songs of the era”. This strange and beautiful sound originated in Shanghai, the “Paris of the East,” and was performed in nightclubs and dance halls and featured in film musicals of the early Chinese cinema. It’s a fascinating fusion of Eastern melodies and scales and Western pop, jazz, Broadway and Tin Pan Alley styles, sung in Mandarin Chinese. On the album, Lucas transformed these evergreen Chinese pop tunes anew via his visionary style of avant-roots guitar fingerpicking.
Some back-story: Shanghai, historically the most cosmopolitan city in China, was a true melting-pot, especially for music. Many Westerners fleeing the Nazis, Fascism and Communism during the two World Wars found a haven in Shanghai, then a free port which didn’t require a passport for entry or departure. And there was always plenty of work for expatriate European, American and Russian musicians in this jazz-crazy city’s nightclubs and recording studios. Eventually the black American jazz trumpeter Buck Clayton, who had a residency in Shanghai with his band in the mid 30’s, joined forces with Dr. Li Jinhui, “the father of Chinese song”, to create this unique fusion of Eastern and Western pop music beloved by Chinese people world over.
The Edge of Heaven: Gary Lucas Plays Mid-Century Chinese Pop reinvigorated this lovely and romantic music anew, and topped the World Music charts upon release as an import in 2002, and received glowing reviews from Rolling Stone, NPR, and the Wall St Journal, and from the Chinese press in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. The album was re-released in 2008 on Knitting Factory Records with bonus tracks. Over the years, Gary has given numerous concerts of this repertoire around the world with various singers, including two sold-out nights at BAM in 2013, at the 2012 Holland Festival in Amsterdam, and numerous times in Shanghai including during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
Gary Lucas’ new EDGE OF HEAVEN LIVE trio with Feifei Yang and Jason Candler has just finished recording Volume Two of “The Edge of Heaven”, featuring more classic 30’s Chinese pop, and are currently working an album of well-known songs by Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Fred Neil, Jefferson Airplane, Leonard Cohen and others sung by Feifei in Mandarin Chinese –some of which they’ll perform at The Loft at City Winery on Wed. July 25th at 7:30pm.

Kenny Barron Trio Honored by The National Endowment for the Arts as a 2010 Jazz Master, pianist Kenny Barron has an unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms. As a teenager, he started playing professionally with Mel Melvin’s orchestra. While still in high school. Kenny worked with drummer Philly Joe Jones and at age 19, he moved to New York City and freelanced with Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan and James Moody, after the tenor saxophonist heard him play at the Five Spot. Upon Moody’s recommendation Dizzy Gillespie hired Barron in 1962 without even hearing him play a note. It was in Dizzy’s band where Kenny developed an appreciation for Latin and Caribbean rhythms. After five years with Dizzy, Barron played with Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, and Buddy Rich. The early seventies found Kenny working with Yusef Lateef who Kenny credits as a key influence in his art for improvisation. In 1974, Kenny recorded his first album as a leader; this was to be the first in over 40 recordings (and still counting!) as a leader. Come see the Kenny Barron Trio with David Wong on bass and Savannah Harris on drums at the Jazz Forum!

At 92, a full 64 years after he released his first record, Weston is still performing at full force. He has been called a “griot of jazz and its African roots” and “one of the world’s great visionary pianists and composers.” A pioneer of multicultural expression on piano, his style draws from Ellington and Monk but is highly distinctive: percussive, rhythmic, capable of producing a wide range of moods. A true jazz great and one of its most important ambassadors. His life work has been in advocacy for connecting worlds of traditions in music. He has impacted jazz composition by pioneering multicultural expression with the piano since the 1950’s.
Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) and Seed Artists are honored to co-present the legendary Randy Weston on July 7, 2018, at 7:00PM, as part of JCAL’s International Music Festival.

“On the rhythmically and harmonically diverse, improvisation-rich, spiritual minded A Burgeoning Consciousness, he whirlwinds together the best of all styles as the leader of a powerhouse sextet.”
Jonathan Widran, JWVibe
“Your mind will flicker back and forth between the sum and its parts, and then you’ll relax and hear the whole sound wash over you complete, especially as each of these epic tunes reach a thrilling climax.”
Marc Phillips, The Vinyl Anachronist
“The guitarist puts together a tight, unfussy melody, and rolls it out like it had a bank of spotlights covering its movement.”
Dave Sumner, Jazz Recommendations – 2018
“When playing this I often find myself closing my eyes and just getting into the feel, the rhythm and soul of the album, as it truly is a beautiful piece of work.”
Kev Rowland, FRaME Music
“Noshir’s involvement and dedication to producing music with true power is total, and his players are all cut from that same cloth; this is music that will stand the test of time – and survive.”
Dick Metcalf, Contemporary Fusion Reviews
“Noshir Mody’s newest album expands minds; musical horizons”
Dodie Miller-Gould, Lemonwire
“He finds the sweet spot where real muso ears will appreciate his guitar excursions. A tasty outing throughout, it certainly sates the need for something out of the ordinary but not too way out.”
Chris Spector, Midwest Record
“Mody is a very skilled composer whose colorful originals develop as they evolve, taking listeners to unexpected places. His music often features dense grooves behind the soloists, along with a purposeful forward momentum.”
Scott Yanow, Jazz journalist/historian and author of 11 books including The Great Jazz Guitarists, The Jazz Singers and Jazz On Record 1917-76
